A

persistent stench hanging over Richmond has now prompted some residents into more organized action against Harvest Power, the compost company responsible for the sour, gag-inducing odour.

Local realtor Arnold Shuchat has created an online petition and Facebook group (Stop the Stink in Richmond) calling on residents to share their concerns, appeal a recent permit to Harvest Power and ask the composting company to give immediate assurances that its foul odours will cease.

Shuchat is concerned people have few reasonable avenues to file complaints and

be informed about the progress of a fouryear air quality permit issued Sept. 30 to Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics Ltd. by the Metro Vancouver regional government.

“It sounds like people are lodging complaints and no one cares. There’s a lot of skepticism that nothing is being done,” said Shuchat.

The Richmond resident of 23 years believes the odours may be grounds for a class-action lawsuit by residents, under nuisance laws. And if the stink persists, it could have long-term consequences on health and property values, he said.

His Change.org petition, titled ‘Stop the Stink in Richmond,’ reads: “We are concerned for our health and personal safety, our diminished enjoyment of our ‘Island by the Sea’ environment, and the value of our

properties, which are likely to be diminished over time by the disgusting smell in the air as a result of the operation of Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics Ltd., which to date has failed to operate in a way so as to prevent nuisance damages to its neighbours.”

Speaking to the Richmond News, Schuchat put his concerns more plainly: “If someone took a turd on your lawn every day and the wind blew your way, it’s a nuisance,” said Shuchat.

Resident John Bradford said he is particularly concerned about the health implications of the new permit that allows for a seven-fold increase in the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be emitted from the facility, compared to the previous permit.

Walmart not on everyone's shopping list Local enviro stewards likely steering clear of new stores ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

hile crowds of people are expected to flock to the new Central at Garden City shopping centre when it opens on Thursday, at least three Richmondites are highly unlikely to darken the doorstep of Walmart, the mall’s anchor tenant.

The retail giant — along with Marshalls and several other stores at the 372,000-square-feet outdoor mall on Garden City Road and Alderbridge Way — will open its doors on Thursday morning to the delight of many local shoppers.

However, now that the paint is about to dry on the shopping centre, a trio of Richmond environmentalists who, for years, vehemently opposed the West Cambie development for varying reasons, won’t be caught in the crush for any doorcrashers on opening day.

And, at least two of the three — school teacher Michael Wolfe, Coun. Harold Steves and long-time community activist Jim Wright — aren’t laying all of the blame for the “blot on the landscape” at the feet of the developer (SmartCentres) or Walmart.

“SmartCentres told everyone they wanted to be a good neighbour and all that stuff, but not once did my parents (who live in the same block) receive any kind of information or notification,” said Wolfe, who will stage his own one-man protest outside the new shopping centre on Thursday afternoon, urging everyone to “shop local” and steer clear of Walmart.

“The neighbourhood was sold down the river; it’s gone, completely eroded. Now there are fires in vacant properties and squatters; people sold to developers and speculators and moved away, no one wanted to live near a Walmart.”

Wolfe said, after spending more than three decades living in the West Cambie neighbourhood, he watched SmartCentres “bullying my community to death.”

In reference to the loss of designated environmentally sensitive land to the development, Wolfe said the area used to be full of mature trees and is now covered by a shopping centre or townhouses.

“There has been no environmental compensation whatsoever (from the development),” he added.

Before planning permission for the centre was given by the City of Richmond in 2013, hundreds of people packed city hall for a public hearing, mostly to voice their opposition.

city’s West Cambie Area Plan. Now, he questions, among other things, the absence of promised plantations along the buffer to Garden City Lands.

“I ain’t goin’; Walmart isn’t my cup of tea,” quipped Steves of Central at Garden City’s unofficial opening day.

“I asked for native plants and trees (such as crab apple) along Alderbridge; apparently they couldn’t find them. And there was supposed to be a trail system running through there, but I don’t think that’s there.

“So, it’s just as I expected; it’s just as bad as what was planned.”

Steves said Richmond’s newest shopping centre and the “monstrosity down at Tsawwassen” — in reference to the recently-opened Tsawwassen Mills — have sent the region “back to the ‘50s.” “(Central at Garden City) is about a kilometre from the Canada Line, it’s not exactly progress.”

One of the many bones of contention back in the day for Wright, past president of the Garden City Lands Conservation Society, was the visual impact of the development on the viewscape looking north from the adjacent Garden City Lands.

“I think the impact is what I expected. Obviously, I didn’t know exactly what to expect or what it was going to look like,” said Wright.

“But it wasn’t just about Walmart, it was the whole development, a combination of everything in there.

“People living in the city centre should be able to see the northbound viewscape. The greenspace on Garden City Lands, the (former) mixed urban forest and the mountains, all in the one view, was unique in the world. Now it’s gone.”

Wright said he was never opposed to Walmart, as such, or the rest of the tenants. “I don’t even think it was their fault or that of the developer, I think it was the City of Richmond (for allowing the development to take place in the first place).”

A number of the mall’s 53 tenants are expected to open for business on Thursday, including Marshalls and Walmart, although SmartCentres was unable to say how many.

The rest of the stores are expected to open gradually as the weeks and months roll on, with an official mall grand opening not anticipated until next year, when all the tenants are open.

Marshalls grand opening is at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.

An estimated 975 jobs — about 240 at Walmart alone, which accounts for half the centre’s retail space — will be created as a result of the development.

In the lead up to the mall’s opening, the intersection of Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road has been upgraded to include larger, designated left-turn lanes to help move traffic in and around the area more efficiently.

Passengers sought after pedestrian, 21, is killed by bus Graeme Wood

A

21-year-old man has died in hospital after being hit by a bus on Westminster Highway, in the Hamilton neighbourhood.

Police in Richmond are now looking for passengers on the “2003 Ford bus” who may have witnessed the accident, which occurred Saturday at 6:40 a.m.

The News understands the bus was pri-

vately operated for business purposes.

“The driver of the bus has been cooperative with our investigation. We are still trying to interview some of the passengers on the bus, many of whom, left abruptly before our investigators arrived,” says Cpl. Dennis Hwang, via a news release.

He said the bus was travelling westbound in the 21000-block of Westminster Highway when it hit two pedestrians, the victim and a 22-year-old female.

Both were taken to hospital, but the man

died on Sunday.

“The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) is investigating this fatal collision and has enlisted the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), as well as inspectors from the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch. Much of the area was closed off during the initial investigation.

“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this collision,” said Hwang.

“Our Victim Services Unit has been instrumental in matters pertaining to the family of the deceased and as a vital support network for the surviving pedestrian.”

aywalkers in Richmond will now be subject to a $50 fine, if caught by police. ichmond city council unanimously agreed with a transportation department recommendation to impose the fine on those who don’t use dedicated crosswalks in the city, or anyone who crosses a street when not permitted to (ignoring the ‘Don’t Walk’ sign).

The definition of jaywalking had been removed from the provincial Motor Vehicle Act, meaning municipalities were required to impose their own bylaws. Richmond’s transportation department proposed the fines in a new bylaw that is now set for a public hearing next month.

“I think it’s a serious problem. We’ve had four fatalities in a few years due to people not using crosswalks,” said Coun. Ken Johnston.

According to the RCMP Traffic Section,

as noted in a report to council, there have been 14 pedestrian fatalities in Richmond over the last five years. Four of those occurred outside of a crosswalk.

The proposed fine is said to be designed to act as a deterrent without being overly punitive.

There are 13 police officers in the Traffic Section.

Additionally, to complement the new jaywalking fine for pedestrians, is an increased fine for motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The fine will jump from $109 to $150.

“This amendment will also be enforced by the RCMP, particularly in the City Centre where there is a higher level of pedestrian activity,” noted the staff report.

suffice, as the loft is intended to be a walkthrough museum and not a banquet hall, as it is often presently utilized as.

“This is not being planned properly,” said Steves of the washrooms that will be tucked into the corner of the building.

He also took exception to the fact the money is coming out of a $4.4 million arts and heritage reserve fund.

Senior parks manager Mike Redpath contended demand for washrooms exceeded present service levels.

Earlier in the month, city council approved one-time funding of $341,000 to increase hours of operation and staff for Britannia and the Steveston Interurban Tram in 2017, as part of the city’s multi-million dollar Canada 150 celebrations.

Bradford wants a dedicated “stench hotline” and website for residents.

Ray Robb, Metro Vancouver’s district director, said the government is looking into better ways to communicate enforcement action on Harvest Power, as well as easier methods to communicate complaints (presently complaints can be made by calling Metro Vancouver at 604-436-6777).

Shuchat said concerned residents should file an appeal with the Environmental Appeal Board at EAB.gov.bc.ca (the last day to file is this Friday).

The appeal costs $25 and Robb said that is “one of the best deals going,” considering it will set in motion a lengthy review of Harvest Power’s new permit.

Robb said, a few years back his department received hundreds of air quality complaints over a liquid waste permit in Surrey, but no one appealed it.

Shuchat also wants the City of Richmond to take action. The city indicated in its report that it will not appeal the permit, citing legal costs and a lack of assurances in the outcome. Instead, it has called on Metro Vancouver’s board of directors to review the permit.

“The city should become a plaintiff in this,” but “they’re fearful of having public unrest about issues,” said Shuchat.

However, contended Coun. Bill McNulty, “We are doing everything we can within our legal power to deal with Harvest Power.”

McNulty said he wanted the public to know the odours are not a result of city council and he also called on Metro Vancouver to improve communications with the public.

“I suggest that will be very disturbing when, 20 years from now, epidemiological studies of Richmond residents begin to document the effects of breathing in these chemicals over a prolonged period,” Bradford said.

The News asked Vancouver Coastal Health to comment on health concerns being raised by residents. It stated that Richmond’s public health officer will review the permit.

The City of Richmond, in a recent report to council, indicated VCH has not done a thorough examination of the odours, but that VCH stated the chemicals “can be cause for discomfort and are cause for public concern.”

The city called on VCH for a formal response.

The odours are a result of increased organic materials being sent to the facility, especially since Metro Vancouver started collecting kitchen scraps, said Coun. Harold Steves.

Unlike a new compost facility in Surrey, Harvest Power operates outdoors and has no odour tower to disperse the VOCs. Christian Kasper, Harvest Power’s CEO, said there will be immediate improvements to the facility, such as: replacing the majority of the piping system, reducing food waste by 30 per cent, treating the compost, reducing compost pile heights and increases in staff to process materials.

He pledged to “aggressively move forward” on more modern equipment by 2018. He said there will be a noticeable reduction in odours

tephanie Tong couldn’t understand the silence. So, she gave it a voice with her words.

Tong’s new book, Chasing Light, deals with the subject of miscarriage, an experience she discovered many women endure but rarely talk about.

Tong, who experienced a pair of miscarriages, said she was surprised to learn that about one in four pregnancies in Canada end in miscarriage.

But with such a high incidence, why were women electing to not discuss it? “(Miscarriage) definitely was a shock to me and I felt the taboo about the whole situation. I wondered who I could talk to about this?” she said. “My husband and I didn’t know anybody who’d been through this. So, we didn’t talk to anybody. That was devastating because we felt so alone and isolated.”

The first time, Tong said she had no idea there was a problem with her pregnancy.

“Everything was going fine.” she said. “I was getting morning sickness, I was super tired, so I thought it was going well.

“And ignorance is bliss, I guess. Our first pregnancy a couple of years before went really well. And when we got pregnant again, I thought it would be so easy...”

But when she and her husband went for an ultrasound at the 10-week mark, the technician advised them to immediately book an appointment with their doctor.

“We were expecting the worst and when I was leaving the ultrasound, I said to my husband that I don’t think they could find a heartbeat.”

Just seven months later, she had a second miscarriage.

“I just started spotting and knew,” she said. “I was thinking, please God, don’t let it happen again.

“It started in the early evening and by the next morning, I knew something was really wrong and had to get to the hospital.”

She was at seven weeks.

That was two years ago. Today, they have two daughters, one who is four and other just eight months old.

When Tong finally decided to share what they were enduring, she was amazed to learn that many of her friends had gone through a similar experience.

“So many of them said, ‘me, too,’” she said. “That’s

when it really hits you you. First of all you realize you you’re now a statistic, and secondly, it happens so often that, when a person knows more than three other women, you wonder why no one talks about it?”

Tong said she feels some women don’t reach out for fear of being misunderstood. She also feels society, in some sectors, doesn’t adequately provide openness.

“When you lose someone who is living, you get bereavement leave,” she said. “When you miscarry, you have to use your sick time.

“For me, it was hard to come and say what I was going through, so I didn’t tell my employer and didn’t take any time off.”

The second time, she did take some sick time and told her supervisor what had happened. “I had no emotional capacity anymore to hold it in,” she said.

That expanded to writing about the subject.

“I was already a mommy blogger, sharing ideas about the fun things we did at home,” Tong said. “But when the miscarriages happened, it was hard to keep up that fun vibe.”

She began writing about her experience in a journal, mostly to document it for herself.

LETTERSto the Editor Tunnel twin Why I’ll boycot Wal-Mart more expensive, less safe: Stone The Editor Re: “Massey Tunnel: Who will save the day?” Voices, Oct. 12, Richmond News Mr. Wright refers, in his Digging Deep column, to the Gateway Program Definition Report, released in 2006, which discussed a longer-term plan to twin the George Massey Tunnel. “Twinning the tunnel” in this context was not an endorsement of the construction of a new tunnel, but rather the report promoted the need to increase the capacity of this vital crossing.

There is no doubt amongst anyone who must pass through the current tunnel that a change is necessary. The George Massey Tunnel represents the single worst bottleneck in the province. Over the last 10 years, the ministry has engaged in detailed technical analysis and broad consultation on a number of options that will ensure the smoother movements of people and goods along this important corridor.

Contrary to the belief of Mr. Wright, a new tunnel would be more expensive than a bridge. It would also carry significantly more construction risks and would have a greater impact on the environment, private property, agricultural land, and the Fraser River. The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is subject to British Columbia’s world class environmental assessment process that incorporates the feedback from several federal agencies, including the Canadian Environment Assessment Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, into their final decision. And let me be clear — there are no plans to dredge the Fraser River.

The new bridge will be 10 lanes wide, benefitting both drivers and transit users with increased reliability and reduced transit travel time. The new bridge design includes dedicated transit/HOV lanes to ensure reliable transit service, and will be built to accommodate future rapid transit service. It will also have added access for cyclists and pedestrians. This free-flowing bridge is expected to reduce GHGs by about 13,000 tonnes a year, a 70 per cent reduction from current conditions at the tunnel, and save most commuters 30 minutes a day.

Perhaps, however, it is most important that Mr. Wright understands the seismic benefits of a new bridge. Although seismic improvements were completed in 2008 so that the bridge could withstand a 1-in-275 year earthquake, the new bridge will be built to today’s standard of withstanding a 1-in-2,475 year seismic event. Simply put, we need to address this very real concern to ensure that people crossing this section of the Fraser are safe in the event of an earthquake.

Public feedback on this project has been instrumental. To date, Ministry staff have met with the City of Richmond 111 times and approximately 5,000 people have visited the project office since 2014.

Let me assure Mr. Wright and all residents of Richmond that as this project progresses, we will continue to incorporate local advice.

Dear Editor, This is the tale of my journey as an active citizen, trying to save a community by boycotting a bad neighbour: Wal-Mart.

Congratulations SmartCentres and City of Richmond Council.

You won! You now have your Wal-Mart, the first of its kind within our city limits.

This development has been very personal for me, as I’ve spent more than three decades living in the West Cambie neighbourhood. From its infancy, SmartCentres succeeded by bullying my community to death. How does a community die? The people move away, abandoned houses go up in flames, trees are uprooted, the environment gets bulldozed, and sand becomes king of this once arable land.

The city even provided early compensation to the community by allocating 12 acres for an adjacent natural park. Shockingly, after

the Wal-Mart approval, the park was completely rezoned for housing.

I’ve attended more than 60 city council meetings, and made many presentations on this issue. Numerous times the SmartCentres staff (albeit not under oath) misrepresented their social responsibility commitments. They had no intent to protect any of the existing natural qualities of the designated environmentally sensitive area they have now built upon.

Wal-Mart has done nothing to benefit our society, or improve the lives of our residents, and its arrival has detrimental implications for our local businesses and overall health as a community.

Wal-Mart is the largest global corporation.

They have a devastating impact on the cultural landscape of communities all over the world. We are conscious social beings that have a choice. Ask yourself: does shopping at Wal-Mart support my community? You can choose to feed this billionaire beast of a bad neighbour, or you can support your local retailers, your family and friends, and your neighbourhood.

Visitors turned off by smell Dear Editor, I have had the pleasure of visiting friends in Richmond frequently over the past 20 years.

My husband and I drive or fly in from Portland, Oregon to visit friends, walk the dyke along the Fraser River, explore your growing international community and wild places of this beautiful Island by Nature.

This visit, I was dismayed to encounter a stench in the

air that was impossible to escape.

My friends tell me a Metro Vancouver contract with the alleged creator of this vile perfume, Harvest Power, may be in effect for four more years.

Clearly, the members of Metro Vancouver do not live in this community and do not care about the quality of life here. Nor do they care about the tourism industry in Richmond or the village

of Steveston.

How sad that this wonderful community has to endure this, day after day.

As a visitor, I can go back home and wash the garbage smell out of my clothing.

How sad that I can no longer recommend this area as a vacation destination to family and friends south of the border as long as that smell is in your air.

Trees make good neighbours Open letter to mayor and city council.

Many residents, including myself, are very concerned at the loss of mature trees in our neighbourhoods due to development.

Construction of lot-filling, new houses has led to the removal of healthy mature trees.

Residents continue to protest this trend, which is happening despite the city’s Tree Protection ByLaws.

Council can act now to

mitigate some of this tree destruction.

Richmond has some beautiful, boulevard-style streets with trees on each side. There are also streets with adequate room for trees on the side of the roadways, but sadly no trees have been planted.

I suggest council mandate the planting of trees on these streets.

This action would follow the city’s official community plan, which states that the preservation of the

neighbourhoods’ ecological network is a priority.

Residents could be involved in identifying those streets where such planting should occur.

Completion of a tree canopy study in Richmond, which I have previously suggested, would also be a helpful step to addressing this priority.

Without such actions, the livability of our neighbourhoods is threatened.

By comparison, Richmond Public Library costs $126.04 per square foot to operate, Hamilton Community Centre is $69.14/sq.ft., Minoru Seniors Centre is $63.49/sq.ft. and Watermania is $60.02/sq.ft.

12. The City makes a financial contribution towards the

operating costs of all City owned facilities. All City owned facilities are exempt from paying property taxes or rent because they are the property of the City. From the City’s perspective, upon consolidation of the City’s and Oval’s financial statements the net cost to the City in 2015 for the Oval was $1 million ($2.3 million Oval profit minus the $3.3 million City contribution). Therefore, the true cost to the City for the Oval’s 2015 annual operations was $1 million, not the $3.3 million contributed, because the City is the owner and the Oval Corporation reinvested the $2.3 million in the facility.

13. The City is the sole owner of the Oval. The Oval

Corporation operates the Oval on behalf of the City, but receives no payment for doing so. The Oval pays for its own maintenance, operating and capital costs.

Collectively, Richmond’s other City owned facilities receive millions of dollars each year from the City for the same costs.

14. As an Olympic legacy venue, the Oval generates

additional long-term revenues through enhanced sponsorship programs. The Oval has attracted over $8 million in sponsorship funding to date.

17. The cost of our Olympic relationships is modest. These

costs are paid from funds generated from sponsorship.

No property tax dollars are used for this purpose. The average cost of the Oval’s Olympic-related obligations is between $50,000 and $70,000 annually.

18. The community benefits from our external funding.

Over the past 10 fiscal years, the Oval has received more than $27 million from the Games Operating Trust (GOT) to support the Oval’s role as a high performance sport centre. The Oval continues to receive roughly $2.5-$2.8 million annually from GOT. The ability to receive this external funding in perpetuity was a key reason the City decided to build the Oval and to participate in the 2010 Olympic Games.

Time to tow away traffic chaos Dear Editor, Something must be done about afternoon rush hour traffic around Sea Island Way and the Arthur Lang Bridge.

On Friday, there was a stalled car in a northbound lane on the bridge that tied up traffic for at least half an hour.

It’s about time that emer-

gency tow trucks were stationed at both ends of the bridge to clear such obstructions as soon as possible.

What made matters worse were the impatient and inconsiderate drivers who blocked busy intersections in that area because they tried to turn into a lane already full of cars.

Such actions only serve to further slow traffic and potentially block the path of emergency vehicles.

The City of Richmond should work with YVR (Vancouver Airport Authority) and the RCMP to come up with a plan to counter these critical traffic issues.

W

hat if you could enjoy dishes prepared by the region’s most renowned chefs, all in place, in one stunning evening?

This is the question that Matt Pitcairn, president and CEO of the Richmond Chamber, and Rob Akimow, chair of the Chamber, were pondering in 2015. And, what if those immensely successful chefs shared their stories – of business, food and passion?

That question was answered in January 2016 with From the Kitchen to the Boardroom. Chefs Vikram Vij, Quang Dang, Brett Turner and Jackie Kai Ellis turned the River Rock show theatre into Richmond’s best restaurant for one night and shared their stories with more than 325 guests.

The answer was pure culinary alchemy.

In 2017, the Richmond Chamber in partnership with the Richmond News is bringing this culinary evening back with From the Kitchen

to the Boardroom 2.0. Moderated by the city’s own Mijune Pak (@followmefoodie), this event will feature courses and discourse from chefs David Hawksworth (Hawksworth, Nightingale, Bel Cafe), Angus An, (Maenam, Longtail Kitchen, Fat Mao Noodles), Lucais Syme (Cinara), and Franck Point (Faubourg).

“It’s unheard of to have so many outstanding chefs share a stage, and their cuisine,” said Akimow. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring this outstanding event back to Richmond, which is truly a great dining city.”

“I had heard one that involved a display in the cannery that features a plaster cast made from the hand of a cannery worker who had lost a finger, as many cannery workers often had,” Horita said. “It’s on a stand that we rotate to surprise visitors and reveal the missing finger.”

High flying Bantam Ravens win Rep Classic Mark Booth

ony Lindsay might feel like a kid in a candy store when it comes to guiding the Richmond Bantam “A” Ravens.

The veteran coach has led a number of outstanding boys and girls teams in Richmond over the years — long enough to know he has something special with this group that put on a show this past weekend at their own 4th annual Pacific Coast Female Rep Hockey Classic.

The high-flying Ravens capped an unbeaten run with a 4-2 victory over rival Tri-City Predators in Sunday’s championship game at the Olympic Oval.

It’s not even November and this team is already in outstanding form with several notable wins.

In exhibition play, they defeated Seafair’s Pee Wee A1 boys team (4-1), blasted the Okanagan Hockey Academy (10-0) and even

knocked off the Fraser Valley Rush of the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

It’s no wonder Lindsay is going outside of the province to find more challenges for his girls. The Ravens are headed to Toronto in early December for the prestigious 2 Nations Cup College Prep Series where they will see top teams from both sides of the border in the U14 Division.

The highlight of the Rep Classic was Sunday morning’s encounter with the St. Albert Raiders — one of the top ranked teams in Alberta.

The hosts entered their final roundrobin game with a spot in the final looking likely but took no chances.

They skated to a well-earned 3-2 victory — knocking the Raiders out of championship contention in the process.

he Hugh Boyd Trojans’ defensive game plan was to be aggressive and they didn’t let up until they had their biggest win in recent years.

The Trojans smothered the No. 1 Seaquam Seahawks to produce a 14-7 victory on Friday night, in a showdown of unbeaten teams, to control their own destiny for a first place finish in the Western AA Conference. Boyd can now nail down top spot when the Ballenas Whalers visit the West Richmond school on Friday at 5 p.m.

“The game plan was simple. We were not going to lay back,” said Haddow. “We were going to play our game and make them match our intensity. Man them up and press them. We were not going to play scared.

“All the credit to the kids. That’s as good of a defensive effort that I can remember. (Linebacker) Tariq Lopez was a real man for us today. We trust him and he came up with a number of big plays.”

Lopez also produced the game-winning points when he broke loose for a 45-yard major on the opening possession of the second half. Boyd’s other score came on its initial drive as quarterback Tyler Moxin connected with speedster Zach Jackson for a 40-yard major.

Leading rusher Reace Mok had another productive evening and was complimented by the work of Lopez and Moxin, who ran the ball more Friday than any other time this season. It’s a further sign of his growing confidence after a major knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2015 season.

“It was a big injury and, week-by-week, he is getting more confident and willing to take

off,” said head coach Bill Haddow. “That is what we expected from him and it’s taken him some time to get the feel of it again.”

The big win was dedicated to the memory of 2014 Boyd grad Simon Johal who tragically lost his life in a single vehicle accide.

Johal, 20, was working as a cab driver on Oct. 14 when he lost control of his car on the Barnet Highway. He played football at the West Richmond school for all five years.

“We lost one of our kids. Simon was a happy go lucky kid,” said Trojans head coach Bill Haddow. “We called him ‘Smiles’ because he had a smile on his face all the time. The last couple of years, all he talked about was getting his cab license.”

Sadly missed by her sons Larry (Judy) and Gary and grandchildren Danny, Zackary and Iris. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Bert, in January 2002. Alice and Bert were married in March 1945 and moved on to Richmond in 1958. Alice taught elementary school in Richmond from 1964 until retirement in 1984. In retirement, Alice served as a trustee for a number of years with the South Arm Community Association and was president of the South Arm Seniors for five years. Alice enjoyed bridge and golf, was active with the Mylora Ladies Golf Club and enjoyed Palm Springs winter golf vacations with Bert. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Courtyard Gardens for the care and comfort they provided to Alice. A memorial service will be held at a future date; contact hawkins8642@gmail.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alice may be made to the Richmond Hospital Foundation.
