John Watson

John F. Watson is a retired professional engineer with project management experience primarily in the resource sector. He directed projects of up to one billion dollars capital cost in today’s dollars in Canada and South America. He served as president of Engineers and Geoscientists of BC, the Association of Canadian Engineering Companies of BC (ACECBC). John was a founding director of the Vancouver International Airport Authority and served 21 years during the establishment of the authority and the building of the original international terminal building and the new north runway. He served as chair of the BC Safety Authority, now named Technical Safety BC, in its transition from a provincial government department to a not-for-profit organization. He was recognized for his career achievements by ACECBC. Since moving from Marpole to Richmond in 1969, John has been active in a number of volunteer activities in the community including chairing the Richmond Public Library Board, chairing the Richmond Citizens Cycling Committee, participating in citizens’ building committee for the Gateway Theatre, and chairing the Library/Cultural Centre building committee. He is currently the chair of the Richmond Gateway Theatre Society. A member of the Sigma Chi international fraternity while at UBC, John now serves on the international executive of the fraternity, responsible for chapters in the Pacific Northwest. He has received recognition by Sigma Chi both for service to the fraternity and for career achievements. John was named a “Star of Richmond” at this year’s annual Volunteers are Stars event. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? For many years I cycled daily to stay in shape. Since my knees have started showing my age, I try to have a brisk one-hour walk every day. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? A walk on Richmond’s many dikes or wooded areas. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? I don’t really have a bucket list — I just try to get involved in activities that interest me. 4. What’s your favourite food? I like most food — too much

for my own good — but do appreciate our access to Richmond’s seafood and Asian restaurants. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? Richmond is now pretty much in the centre of the Greater Vancouver area with access to the Canada Line. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? It would be someone who moves about quietly taking part in the community without attracting too much attention to themselves. 7. What song best describes Richmond?

Newport on the Oregon coast has some common features of Richmond.
