Dianne Woodhouse

Dianne has probably handed out more sandwiches and clean towels to Richmond’s homeless and marginalized population than anyone. As chair of St. Alban’s Outreach and Advocacy, her committee founded the first-ever drop-in centre in Richmond. The committee also launched the Saturday Morning Shower Program, the Friday Lunch in the Park Program and the Sandwich and Food Delivery Program on Sundays. Dianne grew up on a farm in the Fraser Valley. After graduation, she became a dental assistant before leaving for five years abroad, living and travelling in Europe, Scandinavia and Africa. Upon return, she graduated from BCIT as a registered nurse and practical nurse. She married and moved to Richmond 40 years ago to raise two children. She has always been inspired by her grandfather, who did an amazing amount of unrecognized charity work and refused any accolades. With both children in school, she enrolled at UBC and graduated with a BSc in nursing. Over her long career, she worked maximum security forensics, psychiatry, critical care and emergency. She retired from Vancouver Coastal Health in 2013 as a patient services manager in emergency psychiatry. She has recently been a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award by the Rotary Foundation. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I work out at a gym at least three times a week and I power walk with a group every Saturday morning (8-10 km in 1.5 hours) 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? Watching the “working river,” especially the north arm; the log booms, the tugs, the mills, the fishing boats — such a vibrant part of B.C. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? I finished my bucket list — the last item was hiking the Patagonia in South America. It was spectacular! Photo by Rob Kruyt

4. What’s your favou-

rite food?

of-town guests?

Sushi. But Dave’s Fish ‘n’ Chips is right up there.

The temples on our Highway to Heaven — people can’t believe what they see.

5. What do you like best about Richmond? The unsung commitment of our citizens who give back to the community. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Justin Timberlake. 7. What song best describes Richmond? “Change” by John Lennon. 8. If you could write Richmond’s motto, what would it be? Join Hands. 9. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-

10. What other city compares to Richmond and why? I don’t think there is a city that compares specifically with Richmond unless you compare it to other small towns that are changing and growing up to join the big leagues. For example, Burnaby is changing, Richmond is changing, Haney is changing. So many more are in the same transition of growing up. 11. Who’s your favourite sports team? I don’t have one.

Network & Play with Richmond's Best June 17th!

Congratulations To All Finalists!

Esther Ho

At the age of 12, Esther Ho began her life of volunteerism which has culminated in everything from a seven-day, 250-kilometre race through the Sahara to a 73-day bike ride across Canada — all in the name of charity. Ho was born in Hong Kong and studied social work at the City University of Hong Kong. In 1995, she immigrated to Vancouver where she embraced a variety of good causes that helped her connect with her community. Good causes, however, don’t always pay the bills. In 1999, she founded a network marketing company, Billion Venture International with the goal of making enough money support her charity work. The plan has worked and now Esther is a successful entrepreneur with the means to support a variety of not-for-profit organizations, including the Vancouver Sowers Society of Education, The Integration Youth Service Society, Mustard Seed Children’s Theatre, E&E Global Foundation, Dare BC Society, Gateway Theatre Pacific Festival and more. In addition, Esther has worked as a columnist and radio commentator for local Chinese media.

Steward Siy

Steward Siy’s longtime passion for high school basketball is making a difference at MacNeill secondary. The volunteer coach guided the Ravens senior boys team to their best season ever, a fourth place finish at the provincial “AAA” championships. He has teamed up with Peter Thackwray and Landon Dy to build MacNeill into a formidable program that also includes Machoops spring and summer ball. Siy (pictured far left) looks back fondly at his days as a student at Churchill secondary, playing for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams. He caught the coaching bug soon after, working with a talented Churchill Grade 8 team that included future national team standout Levon Kendall. Twenty years later he is going strong with his roots now established in Richmond, volunteering for the past decade with the MacNeill basketball program. He also organizes the Ravens’ annual home opener Stronger than Cancer night as a fundraiser event for the BC Cancer Foundation. Siy was recently honoured among the Nova Star Awards at the Volunteers Are Stars event for the Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives organization. Photo by Sean Hitrec 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Not easy with all the food and restaurants our city has to offer. I try and get to the gym every morning and do some cardio stuff. My son really enjoys playing in the parks and playgrounds, be it the monkey bars, the slide, tossing a football, soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? The different parks and greenspace all around us: Terra Nova, King George, Minoru, Garry Point, Steveston, South Arm. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Attending a game 7 NBA Finals game with my son featuring another Vancouver team (we need to get our team back). A Stanley Cup game 7 finals with

the Canucks will do as well. 4. What’s your favourite food? Japanese food and Chinese food. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? The diversity and variety in our community, the people, the food/restaurants, the recreational facilities and programs. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Maybe the cast from Crazy Rich Asians. 7. What song best describes Richmond? Simply the Best by Tina Turner. 8. If you could write Richmond’s motto, what would it be? Beautiful City….Good Food…..Great People….

Bad Drivers. 9. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Steveston Village, Night Market, Richmond Olympic Oval, MacArthur Glen Outlet. 10. What other city compares to Richmond and why? We haven’t really been to too many places but every time we come back from a trip we sure are glad to be home. Richmond truly is beautiful. 11. Who’s your favourite sports team? Currently it has to be my son`s U7/U8 ball hockey team the Dragons. They are looking to repeat as Richmond champions. Also a big fan of our Ravens basketball teams at MacNeill as well as the Canucks and the BC Lions.

1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Playing soccer with the Richmond Old Blacks, occasionally chasing alongside the younger All Blacks and spinning at Russel Sean Fitness. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? I remember riding my bike exploring various parts of the perimeter dikes as a young boy, from there when I got my license I remember discovering Triangle Beach, and over the years have discovered many more little nooks and crannies off the beaten path. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Buying a piece of Ronnie Wood artwork. 4. What’s your favourite food? Too many to list but Danny’s Wun Tun, Steveston Pizza Co., Ember Indian Kitchen, Mega Sushi to name a few. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? The ever-changing nature of our community. I use Steveston Village as an example: growing up this was not a place you often took out-of-town visitors unless you were buying fish or showing them the fishing fleet — and visitors weren’t always fond of those aromas. Today it is one of the gems of our community. The transformation and recreational use of our dikes should also be noted. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Photo by Ken Lam

Kyle Shury

Kyle is a proud “Richmond Boy” having grown up and lived in this great community for most of his life. He now calls Steveston home where he lives with his beautiful wife, Megan, and their three kids Lexy, 14, Bella, 12, and Damon, 10. Kyle made the headlines in the Richmond News earlier this year after handing back $8,000 to an elderly woman who’d lost the cash. He can often be found out on the soccer pitch coaching his up-and-coming U14 Metro Girls — Richmond Red Bulls or his beloved Richmond All Blacks, while still getting the opportunity to kick the ball around with his fellow Old Blacks. Kyle considered it a great honour to serve for eight years on the board of the Richmond Hospital Foundation, the last three as chair. He continues as an honorary director for this incredible organization. In his spare time, he runs a real estate development company, Platform Properties, and is pleased to be doing business in his backyard with the redevelopment of the former Rod’s Building Supplies site which has been named The Roderick, to recognize its historical past.

This one’s a little corny but, to use a current pop star, Lady Gaga — like her hairstyles, we’re always changing and evolving. 7. What song best describes Richmond? I am not sure of its title but it would be a medley of various songs in many different languages. 8. If you could write Richmond’s motto, what would it be? Don’t have a motto per se but can’t help to think a reference to our melting pot of cultures, or extensive cuisine options would be included. 9. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? The Village, always proud to show it off to guests. 10. What other city compares to Richmond and why? I can’t say I have an answer for this one, truthfully, I have never visited any place quite like it (which is a good thing). 11. Who’s your favourite sports team? U14 Red Bulls, Richmond All/Old Blacks and abroad, Liverpool FC.

Fan Chun

Fan Chun was awestruck by the vastness of Canada and fell in love with the cultural mosaic of the country the moment he stepped off the plane. Canada has been his home ever since. He travelled to Canada in 1989, beginning his journey in St. John’s, Nfld. His study, work and CPA training brought him coast to coast. From Nova Scotia to British Columbia, he has seen it all. He even worked at an oil field for Imperial Oil (Esso) in a remote town in Alberta. Eventually, his interest in IT and accounting brought him to UBC for his master’s degree. Fan believes he owes his entire career development to the Richmond community. His work experience include software support and development, consulting and finance. For the last 10 years, he has been the CFO of Dr. Power, an international company headquartered in Richmond that exports a variety of mobile power solutions, including power-assisted pedelec ebikes to over 50 countries in the world. Fan started to get involved with Richmond Chamber of Commerce in 2012 as a director. As the current chair of the Chamber, Fan finds this an excellent opportunity for Dr. Power and him to give back to Richmond’s business community. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

I try to walk everywhere. I also try to go swimming at least twice a week.

5. What do you like best about Richmond?

2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? Although the entire city of Richmond is beautiful, Richmond Nature Park (No. 5 and Westminster) has a special place in my heart. 3. What’s top of your bucket list?

I treasure Richmond’s strategic importance to the greater Vancouver region, and the vital role it plays in the regional infrastructure development. Richmond also retains her small community charm, with our food choices, access to nature and cultural mosaic.

would it be? Inclusivity, Environment, Vibrant, a born-again fishing community. 9. Where in Richmond do you like to take outof-town guests?

6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be?

A morning walk along the dike, Asian cuisine on Alexandra for brunch, and then shopping at the malls in the afternoon. Afterwards, wine tasting in East Richmond, finishing the day with dinner and a sunset in Steveston.

Businesses that Thank-you Richmond For Your Best Dance Instructor Votes!

StandOut-Richmond Academy of Dance Training young dancers to professionalism is at the centre of the dance academy’s philosophy After 32 years of providing dancers with the environment for their skills to flourish, Richmond Academy of Dance hasn’t changed its philosophy for every student – making each dancer be the best they can be and training serious young dancers who want to become professionals! It’s a long hard-earned path to make every person the best they can be which includes all the graduates that are working professionally today, says Heather Joosten-Fair and Annette Jakubowski, the academy’s artistic

directors. “We owe our longevity to staying true to our philosophy of instilling the joy of dance and exploring the potential in every student that enters the academy,” Jakubowski said. “We give everyone personal service and genuine care.” That depth of commitment, along with an accomplished faculty, is what makes the academy unique. “Our faculty is made up of true professionals, some of whom are still performing, and provide the highest standard possible to our students,” Jakubowski said. “Our well-rounded training allows our future dancers and performers to be as prepared as possible,” Joosten-Fair added. “We have award-wining departments in all genres of dance, acting and voice and are the only school in the Lower Mainland to have had provincial winners in all levels of Classical Ballet, Jazz, Stage, Contemporary, Classical Voice and Musical Theatre Voice.” Keeping the academy fresh and contemporary over its long history has been key as new dance forms have emerged and evolved. “Over the years we have expanded by offering Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Hip hop, Voice, Acting, Experimental Anatomy classes, Stage, Body Conditioning, and Injury Prevention Awareness that gives a more scientific approach to understanding the body,” Jakubowski said. “When we began back in 1987 we had Classical Ballet, Tap and Jazz classes.” Over the years there have been numerous successes as students have earned recognition on many levels and gone on to professional careers. Plus, many graduates have returned to the academy as instructors to pass along their experience. That connection is part of why the academy’s future is bright as it remains committed to instilling the joy of dance, singing and acting in all students, and producing more graduates who go on to professional careers. “We are also developing international student-exchanges and will continue to grow as an integral and respected part of the social fabric of the community,” Joosten-Fair said. Elizabeth Bodnarik

Born in a small town in Saskatchewan, Elizabeth, at the age of 18, applied to Vancouver General Hospital’s (VGH) nursing school in 1948.

She spent three years living in residence there before graduating as a nurse in 1951, spending her entire 42year career at VGH until retiring in 1993. Elizabeth had two children during her career, returning to work within a month each time, as there was no maternity leave in those days. In fact, her daughter is carrying on the family tradition and now works as a nurse at VGH. After getting married in 1951 and initially living in Vancouver, Elizabeth moved to Richmond in 1955, living near the now Oak Street Bridge site, where she still lives to this day. And it was in Richmond where she made her mark in the world of volunteering, giving her time at the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary, where she had been even while working at VGH. In retirement itself, on top of the auxiliary (where she recently received a 55-year pin), Elizabeth started volunteering at the Minoru Residence. And she is still giving her time every week to both organizations. As if volunteering most days at two places wasn’t enough, a friend suggested in 2005 she help at the Regional Animal Protection Society’s cat sanctuary on No. 6 Road.

Photo by Alan Campbell 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I have an elliptical machine and do exercise videos and I’ve never smoked or drank. I do my own housework and all the volunteering. 2. If I had to choose a celebrity, I believe Richmond would be like Princess Diana. Her humanitarian efforts to support those in need is the most important reason for my choice. Other similarities include the dedication to serving others through charitable work and believing that volunteering for the good of others is a continuous focal point.

1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? I play tennis, use the treadmill at the Richmond Country Club, and, weather permitting, ride my bike on the greenway. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? It’s a tie between Garry Point Park and the West Dyke Trail. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? I’m embarrassed to say that I have yet to visit the Richmond Night Market. But this summer…I promise! 4. What’s your favourite food? A tie between roast chicken and slow-cooked brisket of beef. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? Being from Southern California, where there aren’t really seasons to speak of, I absolutely love the fact that there’s a real springtime in Richmond – the leaves return to the trees and the blossoms come out in all of their glory. When my young children and I walk to synagogue on Shabbat (Sabbath) mornings, we compete to see who can find the most spectacular flowers. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? Frank Sinatra – confident, self-assured, classic. Doesn’t need to show off (Vancouver, I’m thinking of you). Not afraid to cross a bridge or two.

Adam Rubin

7. What song best describes Richmond?

The River by Bruce Springsteen…about the healing power of endlessly flowing water (though I doubt he had the Fraser in mind when he wrote it).

Adam Rubin has been the rabbi at Beth Tikvah Congregation for almost two years. Before that, he was the assistant rabbi at Congregation Beth Shalom in Seattle for three years. Rabbi Rubin was born and raised in Southern California and, after graduating from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in American and European history, he spent two years studying classical Jewish texts at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. He received his doctorate in modern Jewish history from UCLA, and was a member of the faculty at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles for over 10 years, publishing a number of articles on Hebrew culture in pre-State Palestine and on the history of Zionism. Rubin’s passion for Jewish religious and community life played a key role in his decision to leave academia to become a rabbi. He is married to Judith Schleyer, a teacher at the Richmond Jewish Day School. They have two children, Elior, 9, and Na’amah , 5. His hobbies include tennis, cooking, reading and watching televised versions of whodunnits, and he has an unhealthy obsession with baseball, especially the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adam is also a recovering political junkie.

8. If you could write Richmond’s motto, what would it be? “Richmond – Where River, Sea, Land and People Come Together.” 9. Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests? Sorry to be so obvious…but Steveston, of course! 10. What other city compares to Richmond and why? Forgive the American focus but either Denver, Colo. (much bigger, but at the base of the Rocky Mountains) or Portland, Ore. (also surrounded by mountains and right on a river). 11. Who’s your favourite sports team? Not close…the Los Angeles Dodgers, since I was seven-years-old and my dad took me to my first game. Have been hooked ever since.

Liang Liu

B29

Thank You Richmond

Liang Liu, a grade 12 student at R.C. Palmer secondary, recently came to our attention when he won a $10,000 Horatio Alger Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes students for their “courage, grit and steely determination” in the face of adversity.

for all of your votes!

2OI9

Liu had a “very rough” childhood, growing up in poverty in the U.S. with his single mother who struggled with mental illness. Regardless, Liu remained optimistic and determined to make a better life for himself and his mother. While other kids were out playing, he was in the library teaching himself computer coding, something for which he continues to have a passion. Next fall, he will use his scholarship to study computer science and engineering at UBC. He has already launched his own web development business and plans to create software solutions for businesses in the future. As an inquisitive individual, Liang has taken up hobbies such as swimming and playing the piano as well as ultimate Frisbee. Having dealt with his own challenges, Liang knows the importance of giving others a leg up so looks for opportunities to give back. He coaches his school’s coding club and math club, which place in the top three at regional and provincial competitions year after year. He is the voice of his peers as the grade representative for student council and wants to make sure everyone has a fun and worry-free time at high school. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

4. What’s your favourite food?

“Authentic Asian food and diverse, tight-knit culture.”

I love biking wherever I go, as well as playing ultimate Frisbee. Can’t forget a healthy diet, with a big breakfast to fuel your day.

Spaghetti and hands down

9. Where in Richmond do you like to take outof-town guests?

2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? Walking/biking along the west dike in Richmond is one of the most beautiful scenes you can get of greenery and the water. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Backpacking around Europe.

Natalie Korenic

Natalie Korenic has been busy making a difference on and off the ice for girl ice hockey in her hometown. Born in Vancouver and, aside from spending six months in Australia during university, Korenic has lived in Richmond her entire life. She grew up playing many community-based sports including field hockey, floor hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and, most prominently, ice hockey. Natalie began playing ice hockey when she was five and hasn’t stopped, suiting today for the Richmond Devils Senior AA Women’s team. When she was just 13, Korenic also took on a coaching role with Richmond Ravens Female Hockey and has been a key volunteer with the association since. This past season she was head coach of the pee wee AA team and will have the same role with the Ravens’ Bantam AA team next fall. She is also involved on the board of the Richmond Ravens, last year as tournament director of the Pacific Coast Female Rep Classic and this year as marketing coordinator.

2OI9

Korenic attended Steveston-London secondary, where she captained the tennis team and was heavily involved in the theatre program. She graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce and is currently the marketing and communications manager with a Vancouver biotech company. 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? In the winter, playing hockey. When the weather improves, a leisurely bike ride on the west dike or rollerblading Railway Greenway. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? Garry Point Park and the west dike. On a sunny day, there is nothing better than watching the kites fly in the park, listening to the birds in the reeds along the dike. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? For a long time I had the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu at the top of my list, so I was happy to check

those off last year. Now I want to take a trip through Atlantic Canada, and in particular, visit Newfoundland. 4. What’s your favourite food? Flying Beaver, Gami Sushi, and brunch at Davood’s. 5. What do you like best about Richmond? Our immense diversity, collective interest in healthy living, and the ease of access to both city and nature. 6. What song best describes Richmond? (Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding. 8. Where in Richmond do you like to take outof-town guests?

W

Always to Steveston. The perfect Steveston day with a visitor includes eating some fish & chips and frozen yogurt, poking around the shops (Village Books is one of my favourites), and taking a stroll along the pier and around Garry Point Park. 9. What other city compares to Richmond and why? I can’t think of any that harmonizes all the qualities that make Richmond so unique. 10. Who’s your favourite sports team? I’m a loyal fan of the Canucks. I’m also a fan of the Australian Rules Football League’s North Melbourne Kangaroos.

Michelle Li

THANK YOU RICHMOND FOR VOTING FOR US IN THE CATEGORY V OF BEST INSURANCE AGENCY

Michelle is committed to making Richmond a better place to live now and in the future. She splits her time between being a mom of three, an elementary school librarian, an avid food/ edible flower gardener, a letter writer/petition-starter and a volunteer. She believes in the power of using your voice for change and first spoke at city council nearly 10 years ago when the city was spraying pesticides at the park her children were playing at, resulting in a ban on cosmetic pesticides. Her passion for local food has driven her to advocate for farmland preservation with Richmond FarmWatch. She serves on the executive of her children’s elementary school Parent Advisory Council and enjoys working on yearly Neighbourhood Small Grants to build more connections between people in Richmond.

B43

For over 91 years, Richmond families have trusted Ben Jones Insurance to take care of their insurance needs

Michelle heard the word “community actionist” and now thinks that she might belong to that club and is excited that she has found a host of other community actionists in Richmond. You can often find her talking about kids’ books that adults should read (We Are All Dots: A Big Plan for A Better World and Front Desk), electric cars or growing garlic.
