Family wisdom the foundation of Lansdowne Chinese eatery “I have made sure everything stays consistent, in the morning, afternoon and late night,” Wai explains. “The same flavours, the same textures.” He notes he has 30-plus chefs on staff, but has had the same head chef at the helm for more than 20 years. In addition, Wai says the menu features “a traditional dish for people of my generation” with No. 9’s most popular dish: Congee. The rice porridge dish is a staple comfort food for Hong Kong families, he says, providing nourishment for fussy children and low-appetite seniors alike. No. 9 Restaurant serves its congee with century egg (preserved duck egg) and pulled pork, adding protein and even more nutritional benefits to the basic meal. It’s so popular, in fact, the dish is one of the top three finalists in the Richmond News’ 2018 Best of Richmond readers’ choice awards for Best Congee. Also up for top honours for No. 9 Restaurant is Best Chinese Food and Best Chinese BBQ.

O

ne of Richmond’s most popular Chinese restaurants has a simple recipe for success, according to its founder.

“I thought of food that made me happy as a child and I wanted to share those same feelings through great food,” says Wai, who has owned and operated No. 9 Restaurant in Lansdowne since 1998. “Because that’s what comfort food does — reminds you of your youth.” The result is an extensive menu of 300-400 items — Chinese and Western — that is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Some of the customer favourites include the “basic, go-to, standard dishes” such as fried rice, barbecue and congee. And there are numerous Late-Night and Tea Time specials. Wai prides himself on quality and consistency. No matter what time of day or night people come in, the meals will be what they expect and have come to crave.

The eatery has a casual and busy atmosphere, which is great for weekend family groups and late-night foodies alike. It’s a great place to have lunch, dinner, snacks after the game and late night food… because they’re always open! And the huge parking lot helps too. No. 9 Restaurant is usually a first stop for many people who have just returned on a trip, as they have missed the comforts of home, Wai says. “We love serving people,” he says. “I’d like to thank the community for its support for over 20 years.” No. 9 Restaurant is located at #812-5300 No. 3 Rd., Richmond. Reach them at 604-278-7700. For a full menu, visit Richmond9.com
