The Forever Young Club’s recommendations for walking routes in Richmond

The Forever Young Club has chosen the best five walking routes – all five kilometres in length – for our Best of Richmond readers. We hope you enjoy walking these routes: McDonald Beach

To find McDonald Beach take the exit to McArthur Glen Mall then stay on the road, which then becomes Ferguson Road. When you reach the Canada Post Office terminal, McDonald Road takes you right to the beach. There is plenty of parking and a convenient public washroom here. This little-known dyke pathway follows the North Arm of the Fraser River from McDonald Beach to McArthurGlen Outlet Mall.

An alternative path is along the sandy beach by the river then back up to the dyke pathway.

At one point on the route, you will enter an awe-inspiring over-canopy of trees sheltering the path.

After your walk, you can have a welldeserved coffee at McArthurGlen.

No. 3 Road to No. 4 Road on the South Dyke

The Forever Young Club was warming up recently at the Minoru track.

Follow No. 3 Road south to the dyke.

Start at the parking lot and head east on this beautiful river’s-edge pathway where you can see Mount Baker in the distance.

Often you will see huge freighters hauling cars to be unloaded near No. 6 Road.

The highlight of this route is walking through the picturesque wood-cladded cabins along historic Finn Slough. When you reach No. 4 Road, turn around and re-trace your steps.

Steveston Village to London Farm

This is one of the most popular walkways in Richmond and deservedly so.

In the early morning mist, you will see dozens of fishermen along the pier hoping for a bite. ➡

Once across the wooden bridge, you are on a true boardwalk leading to Britannia Shipyards.

At the Chinese Bunkhouse you turn left, then turn right on Westwater Drive. At Trites Road stay on the pathway (not the road) where, just before No. 2 Road, you will find a beautifully kept pet cemetery.

Following the pathway across No. 2 Road, you will find another pathway on the north side of the apartments. Looking north on a clear day you will see the North Shore Mountains.

Follow this pathway and road back to the dyke. Within minutes you will be at historic and quaint London Farm where you turn around and head back. Instead of taking the same route back, follow Dyke Road to look at the variety of boats in the harbour, to Trites Road, then home to Steveston.

on the West Dyke to Steveston Highway and follow the map through the unique Steveston neighbourhood back to Bayview and First Avenue.

Terra Nova to Blundell Road

Steveston to Garry Point, through the neighbourhood and return

For this route, the Forever Young Club starts at the parking lot on First Avenue and Bayview Street. Walk west toward the Steveston Harbour Dock and take a stroll out and back to look at the interesting boats and the river.

Go around the Cannery Museum and head west where you will pass the best wall mural (in our opinion) in Richmond, showing huge red salmon swimming in a green stream.

Enter Garry Point Park at the Japanese Garden and walk by the memorial of Richmond fishermen who have lost their lives at sea. At this point you often see fish boats heading out for a day’s catch. After rounding the Point, carry on north

To find the start/finish, follow River Road west to Terra Nova. The large parking lot is across the road from the public washroom.

At the south-west end of the parking lot a path will take you over a bridge to the large playground – a challenge for kids of any age. Stay on the treed path going south and parallel to the dyke until you get to Westminster Highway where you will join the dyke south to the washroom at Blundell Road.

Turn around here and head back to the parking lot.

But, instead of taking the same route back, turn east on Westminster Highway to the entrance of Terra Nova Gardens. The gardens are a spectacular sign of success and cooperation between the city and its citizens as part-time “farmers” grow vegetables to distribute to local food banks. ■

Good Morning, Richmond!

The Richmond News has been publishing amazing photos sent in by our readers over the past four years as part of our daily online Good Morning, Richmond! feature at Richmond-News. com. On Mondays, we publish a full gallery of photos.

The News is grateful to all our regular contributors - so grateful, in fact, that we are holding a photo exhibit at the Richmond Cultural Centre during the month of June featuring 15 of these photos. The News asked the Richmond Photo Club to judge the best ones out of 67 that we submitted to them. Please pop by the Upper Rotunda Gallery at the Richmond Cultural Centre – next to Minoru Park – from May 31 to June 28 to see the great photos taken by local photographers.

All the photos are for sale for $150 a piece and proceeds will go to the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition, a charity that advocates for low-income Richmond residents.

Western Sandpipers were patrolling the mudflats at low tide along Steveston Channel at the London Landing pier in mid-May as the spring migration wound down.

Waterfront parks offer fabulous views

Richmond’s waterfronts offer a plethora of walking trails, many along the 49 kilometres of dykes that surround the city.

Dotted along the waterfront are many parks, some small and some large.

Better known to Richmondites are Garry Point Park and Terra Nova Rural Park. But some more hidden ones offer peaceful settings for a picnic or just a place to admire the water that surrounds Richmond.

Tait Waterfront Park is located at the north end of No. 4 Road and is surrounded by residential development. The view from the lookout platform over the North Arm of the Fraser River is stunning with the Canada Line Bridge seen in the distance.

No. 7 Road Waterfront Pier Park, along River Road, is a popular pit stop for cyclists. The park features a former barge-loading pier as a lookout point.

Summer festivals bring community together

There are festivals big and small in Richmond throughout the year including a children’s arts festival, the Cherry Blossom Festival and Doors Open Richmond.

Steveston Salmon Festival

From a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Steveston Community Centre parking lot to the parade at 10 a.m. and the salmon bake starting at 11 a.m. and activities throughout the day, the Steveston Salmon Festival on Canada Day is one of the highlights of the summer. The biggest ones, however, the Steveston Salmon Festival and the Maritime Festival, have long traditions in Richmond.

The Steveston Salmon Festival takes place on Canada Day with the parade starting at 10 a.m.

The Maritime Festival will be at the Britannia Shipyards on Aug. 24 and 25.

Maritime Festival

Richmond and the Village of Steveston have a long history of fishing. The Maritime Festival will run for the 21st year on Aug. 24 and 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. Details will be published in July at RichmondMaritimeFestival.ca.
