Experts in MonaLisa Touch News Update: The MonaLisa Touch has now been FDA approved in the U.S. for over 2 years and at Arizona Women’s Care more than 1000 procedures have brought amazing results to women across the Southwest region. This amazing NON HORMONAL treatment for vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, frequent bladder or vaginal infections and other symptoms that result from a lack of estrogen has revolutionized our success in treating these disheartening issues. In a recent Stanford University study, reductions in dryness and painful intercourse were especially marked, dropping an average of 75% and 66% respectively. As Lindsay (age 56) states, “I was skeptical, but I needed to try something. After the 3 treatments, intercourse was so much better I could not believe it. I actually asked my husband if we could do it again, and he was shocked! It has made such a difference in our relationship.” The MonaLisa Touch uses fractional CO2 laser therapy
to regenerate collagen and rid the vaginal mucosa of the dry atrophic cells. Three simple treatments in the office 6 weeks apart have shown incredible improvements in vaginal atrophy. These treatments take about 5 minutes and are virtually painfree, no anesthesia is needed. As women caring for women, our expertise and customer service are unsurpassed in the valley. Our staff of all-female physicians were the 1st board certified OB/GYNS in the state of Arizona to perform the MonaLisa Touch procedure. We welcome you to any of our open house seminars to learn more about the MonaLisa Touch! You will have the opportunity to meet with the doctors and talk with the patients who have had this life changing procedure. One last testimonial from Rhonda (age 61) sums up why we do what we do, “Thank you Arizona Women’s Care for offering me the MonaLisa Touch! It is an amazing treatment. I am 100% back to feeling like I did 20 years ago!”

MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon
Between regularly sending emails and text messages on your smart phone, spending hours gripping the steering wheel in rush hour traffic, and playing hours of tennis on the weekends, your hands are locked in an endless cycle of repetitive motions that typically go unnoticed until pain sets in. Soreness at the base of the thumb, pain, or a clicking, snapping, or locking sensation while the thumb is in motion could be a sign of trigger thumb. Trigger thumb can result from tendon inflammation due to repetitive gripping motions, or from an underlying medical condition like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has pioneered a minimally invasive procedure to treat trigger thumb in Arizona without the need for complicated and invasive traditional surgery. The EndoTech® Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release system was designed by Dr. Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute. EndoTech® uses a small incision and an endoscopic technique to fix the injured tendon in an outpatient procedure. With EndoTech® , you’ll be back in motion, firm grip in tact, in no time!

all officially begins this month. While not much will change in regards to the weather (although it’s still nice to dream of changing leaves, cooler temperatures and chunky sweaters), the Valley does get a lot more exciting. Event season kicks off with more and more happening in Phoenix each weekend. Pretty soon, your calendar will be overbooked and your favorite restaurants will be packed with a wait. We, too, are gearing up for the fall with some exciting features. One of my favorites is the fall preview pages, where we are highlighting some of the top fashion trends (page 62) for the season – think must-wear colors, unique prints and unexpected textures and silhouettes. We’re also talking beauty trends … berry lips to be exact, on page 62. Another big happening this month is the first NFL game of the season (go Cards!). Fans will flock to local bars in hopes of seeing their team end up victorious, so we are rounding some of the best local dips (page 80) to chow down on when you’re cheering. If you want to be surrounded by fellow fans, we’re spotlighting a few Valley bars that choose sides ... find your home on page 56. We’re also presenting pretty impressive pairs – or we like to call them power couples, on page 30. These dynamic duos are sharing their success secrets, both in business and in marriage! And, speaking of successful, we then shift gears to our cover feature, MaddieRose Holler (page 26). You might recognize her best with her Miss Arizona crown and sash on. We caught up with her prior to the Miss America pageant, talking all things competition, philanthropy and her future as a Sun Devil. We wish her all the luck at the upcoming televised event – she truly sparkles both inside and out! Best, Gabby Richman Editor-in-Chief gabby@richmanmediagroup.com Find our magazine on Facebook!

VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS Stacey Richman
My friend suggested that my spouse and I attend mediation to finalize our divorce. Is this a good idea? Does my attorney go with me? Yes, I always encourage my clients to attend mediation. It is far better to be the co-author of your own settlement than have a stranger (your assigned judge) make decisions about your life for you. At a trial, you will have a very limited time to make your case before the judge issues a final, binding decision. Unlike a judge, a mediator does not have the power to make these types of decisions for you. Mediation can help you both address and resolve all of the issues you are faced with, and take into consideration what is most important to each party without a time limit.

I do advise that you attend mediation with an attorney. Mediators often do not give legal advice, and will therefore allow you to enter into an agreement that may not be in your best interest. Traditionally, I am able to help my clients finalize their entire case at mediation, and have each party sign their agreement before leaving the mediator’s office. Once an agreement is signed, it is binding and final, thereby concluding your case and helping you close this chapter of your life. I wish you the very best of luck.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND
Rhette Baughman gathers young professionals to help furry friends in need BY EMILY GLYNN PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN
Rhette Baughman has never been much of a people-person. “When my parents would take us to their friends’ houses for dinner, I’d always find my way onto the floor, playing with the house pet,” he laughs, recalling his younger animal-loving self. “Actually, not much has changed. If you can’t find me at a dinner party, I’m probably on the floor in another room hanging out with the dogs.” continued… SEPTEMBER 2017 |

up close Baughman’s affection for all things four-legged and furry used to be a loveable quirk, but in recent years, the former marketing strategist has channeled his passion into a full-fledged career. In 2016, he left corporate America and joined the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL), Arizona’s largest and oldest nokill animal shelter. “Unlike most people who end up working at shelters, I was new to understanding a lot about animal welfare and the rescue world,” he says. “[But] I knew I could help [make an] impact. It excited me to be part of a group of passionate, caring individuals who are dedicated to serving a cause bigger than them.” AAWL (www.aawl.org) may look like your typical shelter from the outside, but behind the well-kept kennel doors is an extensive network of educational programs, first-class veterinary services and endless volunteer opportunities, all aimed at making the world a more compassionate place for homeless dogs and cats. The organization’s education department, which employs more than 50 “exotic animal ambassadors,” is particularly focused on impacting Arizona’s youth. By teaching kids and teens about the importance of proper care, safety and advocacy, AAWL is molding a generation of future pet owners who will possess the knowledge and humanity needed to transform the current landscape of animal welfare. AAWL also maintains a regular schedule of dog training courses for overwhelmed adoptees and a low-cost animal care clinic, MDPetCare, offering affordable, non-emergency care to families across the community. Relationships with other rescue groups doing similar work throughout the state help to keep the shelter full and spirits high. “When you adopt, you are saving two lives,” Baughman explains. “The animal you take home and the animal who can [now] come into the shelter and be saved.” As AAWL’s director of development, Baughman works to make such miracles an everyday occurrence. Day in and day out, he oversees the forming and maintenance of donor relationships, spreading AAWL’s mission (rescue, rehabilitate and
rehome) in order to secure corporate sponsorships and new streams of revenue. Since its founding in 1971, AAWL — which has no national affiliation — has relied solely on grants and donations. Not too long ago, however, Baughman and Executive Director Judith Gardner noticed an absence in AAWL’s framework: a group of young, animal-loving professionals motivated to sustain the organization’s life-saving mission through strategic fundraising. Baughman and Gardner saw this missing link as an opportunity to funnel the general goodwill of the surrounding community into a new project, and several discussions later, The League was born. “So many young professionals aren’t happy just talking about change. They want to roll up their sleeves and do something meaningful,” Baughman says. “The League is a space for selected applicants to go beyond donating and volunteering [to] help AAWL expand its reach and sustainability while advocating for animal welfare.” The League, also recognized as AAWL’s Young Professionals Council, is comprised of 25 socially and professionally

connected millennials who will promote the organization’s mission, initiatives and events throughout the upcoming year. All members, each of whom endured an intensive application process, are required to raise a minimum of $500 per year to help The League collect (and hopefully exceed) $15,000 by the end of its debut year. Things officially kicked off this past August, where The League’s newly inducted members gathered to discuss the agenda for the coming year. Up first? On November 4, AAWL will host its annual pet-friendly Walk to Save Animals at Tempe Beach Park, a 2K and 5K walk benefitting the 4,000-plus animals that move through the shelter each year. Baughman will be there, accompanied by his trio of Chihuahuas: Gadget, Blanco and Bella. After all, it’s these little canines, and the deserving animals at AAWL, that keep him on his toes. “Every day, I get to witness the power of the bond between human and animal,” he explains. “As a donor-supported, community shelter, helping ensure the sustainability of the organization is the driving factor for me.”

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER Andrea J. Zakrzewski brings wildflowers into the next generation BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
A
ndrea J. Zakrzewski has been surrounded by art since childhood. Her mother, Andrea de Kerpely-Zak — a Hungarian artist with a flair for painting wildflowers — is her inspiration. Just before Kerpely-Zak left Hungary, she picked a bouquet of wildflowers and painted them, symbolizing freedom and healing. Zakrzewski has based her career as an artist off of her mother’s creation. “My mother has mentored and shaped me as a fine artist, and I hope to leave a legacy of her art in my works,” Zakrzewski says. In 2004, the duo opened Gallery Andrea in the heart of the Arts District. Their artwork is available on canvas and, more recently, on clothes. Last year, Zakrzewski launched her wearable art line, Floral Fashion (www.andreazfloralfashion. com). The collection allows patrons to don Zakrzewski and her mother’s vibrant wildflowers on skirts, leggings, dresses, purses and scarves. “I wanted people to be able to wear our ‘healing flowers’ and spread joy to others they encounter,” she explains.
Etc.
In addition to your mother, what other artists inspire you? I am also a huge fan of all the impressionists, including [Claude] Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Have you always been passionate about fashion? I have been interested in fashion since I was exposed to it as a model and pageant contestant. My love of painting goes hand-in-hand with fashion. What do you love most about living in the Valley of the Sun? The beautiful scenery, including the sunsets and gorgeous mountains that I love to hike. We have such beautiful wildflowers, which I love to paint plein air (outdoors). UPTOWN |

SEPARATING THE BEST FROM “THE REST” – HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR AUTO SHOP IS HONEST SHAHE KOULLOUKIAN, OWNER OF MAZVO AUTO CAR CARE CENTER, GIVES US A FEW VALUABLE TIPS ON AUTO-REPAIR INTEGRITY.
It could happen to any driver: you hear squeaking or grinding coming from your brakes. You’re in dire need of service to keep you safe on the road, and desperation sends you to the closest repair shop. But they’re dishonest, and questionable business practices and unnecessary repairs end up costing you way more than you bargained for. Unfortunately, this occurs all too often – and it’s exactly why Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, has dedicated more than two decades to raising the bar on vehicle maintenance and repair. Mazvo is widely regarded as the gold standard of auto shops, offering unparalleled expertise and trustworthiness. We asked Shahe what sets his business apart, and he told us that there are four key components of a quality service center. CUSTOMER SERVICE. The way your auto repair facility treats you says a lot. Quality of work is important, but their attitude toward customers is equally so. “You should never feel like you’re bothering or burdening your auto shop with questions,” says Shahe. You also shouldn’t be made to feel bad for what you know (or don’t know) about how cars work. You don’t need to – their job is to explain and empower. Also, someone should greet you upon arrival; an auto shop that leaves you wandering on your own for five minutes before even saying hello may not be too eager to gain your business. Mazvo technicians, office staff, and Shahe himself greet customers promptly with complimentary soft drink, popcorn, hot teas, and coffee. “We don’t just want the job,” he asserts. “We aim to build relationships with our customers.” Shahe’s desire to make his customers feel at home and not pressured is evident in Mazvo’s attention to their every need: a relaxing atmosphere with a beautiful outdoor patio that features a water fountain, for example, and complimentary beach cruiser bikes if you’d like to get out and explore while your vehicle is being repaired. DETAILS. Of course you want to hear that someone can fix your engine problem, but don’t you also want to know why? A good auto repair
facility will make you feel comfortable by explaining the “why” in every situation. “We encourage you to ask as many questions as you can; this is your time, there’s no reason to feel rushed,” says Shahe. “We’ll educate you when we provide our suggestions and quotes so you can feel confident that you’re making the right choices for your vehicle.” HONESTY. Mechanics are often portrayed as dishonest with estimates – but there are always bad apples that metaphorically “spoil the bunch.” An honest auto repair shop will listen, allow you to engage, and address your concerns, only suggesting other services if their professional opinion deems it necessary for safety in your vehicle. “A shop that’s in the business of up-selling will stand out as feeling pushy and aggressive,” Shahe advises. Additionally, an honest mechanic will offer a fair price. Sure, the competition is big, but a good repair shop should provide you with solutions, not sell you additional problems. Open, direct communication is the best foundation for an honest service relationship. TRUST. The only way an auto repair shop can be trusted is to prove themselves trustworthy, which is exactly what Mazvo has worked hard to do every day, for every customer. They do this by standing behind what they say and believe in. At the end of the day it’s not what they say or what they do, but how they make you feel that matters the most. Mazvo Auto Car Care Center possesses all these qualities and more, serving the community with a caring team of certified, licensed professionals. Mazvo aims to provide the best service for any domestic or foreign vehicle in the Metro Phoenix area. Loyal customers from Paradise Valley, Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, and surrounding cities choose Mazvo for their unmatched service and integrity. Distinguishing the good from the bad can be tricky, but Shahe has a parting tidbit of wisdom for any consumer: “Service excellence can be truly defined by what a business chooses not to do well.”

ARTISTIC AMBITION
Robbie Pfeffer’s talent takes center stage BY BRITTANY MARONEY PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN
J
ust like his drawings, Robbie Pfeffer is an artful blend of introvert and extrovert. As the lead vocalist of the up-and-coming band Playboy Manbaby, Pfeffer commands the stage, whipping his fans into a feverish frenzy. Post-show, the artist can typically be found sitting in solitude, carefully crafting his illustrations for his animated series that blends his love of music and sketching. “Being both a musician and a visual artist allows me to experience creativity in a variety of ways,” Pfeffer says. “I truly get something unique out of both art forms and together they make me who I am.” The local band recently performed at the Phoenix stop on Vans Warped Tour, with upcoming appearances at Vans Warped Tour in Los Angeles and the inaugural Lost Lake Festival (with the likes of The Killers) on the band’s docket. Pfeffer claims he “lucked” into being a musician, but critically acclaimed Playboy Manbaby seems to have more than luck to its credit. “The name we have made for ourselves has been from hundreds of shows at coffee shops and dive bars,” he explains. “It’s about late nights, hard work and persistence.”
Etc.
You are inspired by: Anyone who isn't afraid to say what they think or do something different. As a songwriter, I love the work of Tom Waits, Yoni Wolf and Sean from AJJ. Any new albums on the horizon? This year we've put out a full-length album called Don't Let It Be and an EP called Eldfell. Both releases show growth in our abilities as a band and I think it's my best work as a songwriter. What motivates your songwriting? I'm inspired by weirdos. That really means people who have a distinctive voice. I write about what I think about, what I worry about, my experiences and my hopes. I write about my problems and the problems of those around me. UPTOWN |

ou can take the girl out of the East Coast, but you can’t take the East Coast out of the girl. Despite relocating from Connecticut over 14 years ago, Stryker Marketing Specialist Katie Clearwater hasn’t strayed far from the nautical color palette and polished threads she was raised on. “My friends and I constantly joke about the amount of white stripes and navy blue I wear,” she laughs. “I definitely keep to my roots with preppy East Coast vibes.” A peek into the University of Arizona alumna’s closet would make Wilbur Wildcat proud, but beneath the paraphernalia is a sea of white jeans, floaty shift dresses and well-worn pieces from J. Crew. “I feel like I stay on style, but I’m never the first to adapt to the latest trends,” confesses Clearwater, who describes her look as fashion-forward with a classic twist. “Some are just too out there for me!” All for the better. With a wardrobe void of crop tops and chokers, she’s free to focus on the things that truly turn heads: timeless, high-quality pieces and that striking all-American smile.
What’s one style “rule” women should break? White after Labor Day. We don’t have too much of a fall in the Desert so I think it’s acceptable to wear white after summer’s end. If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be? Reese Witherspoon’s. I love her classy, preppy vibes, and clothing line, Draper James! Favorite Uptown-area brunch: Chelsea’s Kitchen. You can never go wrong with $12 bottomless mimosas. Empty your bag. What’s inside? Beyond the standard purse items like my wallet and sunglasses (a must!), I’m always prepared with BandAids, a hairbrush, L’Occitane chapstick, and hand sanitizer. I also have a crazy amount of gift cards. I always seem to forget to use them, thus the ridiculous amount I carry with me every day!

n an industry teeming with suit-wearing gentlemen, Joe Conner, branch manager at Homeowners Financial Group, sets himself apart with bright colors and an even brighter personality. “I’ve never shied away from wearing fun colors and patterns – even pink,” he says of his conspicuous style. “In business, I make the same type of lasting impression by being honest, ethical and myself.” The risk-taker has been known to push the limits with turquoise cuff links, eccentric socks and patterned ties, though not without a helping hand. “The folks over at The Clotherie are masters at thinking outside the box when it comes to different styles,” he discloses. Conner’s preferred accessories, however, don’t fit the office dress code. He and his wife are the proud owners of two pomsky puppies, Cedar and Nanook Bear (of Instagram fame, @nanookbear). The fluffy canines provide the couple with a creative outlet, but their purpose runs much deeper than likes and followers. “We are both passionate about the belief that the unconditional love of a dog can heal just about anything,” says Conner. “They bring us so much joy.”
SUITED AND BOOTED
Where can we find you on your day off and what are you wearing? I’m usually at The Henry every morning, but on the weekends, I’m in workout gear with [my wife] Caroline, and Nanook and Cedar. Which style “rule” should every man try breaking at least once? Mix a pattern tie with a different pattern shirt. I used to think you couldn’t mix patterns, but it’s definitely a style rule that can be broken. What goes into coordinating the perfect outfit? Having an organized closet where everything is visible, easily accessible and freshly dry-cleaned. What would we be surprised to find in your closet? A bunch of obstacle course gear. My buddies and I did the 24-hour World’s Toughest Mudder in Lake Las Vegas last year.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH MISS ARIZONA 2017, MADDIEROSE HOLLER: THE SCHOLARSHIP, THE PHILANTHROPY AND THE HARD WORK
iss America is an advocate for women’s education, a leader in her community and a role model for girls and women everywhere. She is steadfast in her commitment to charity and a spokeswoman on various issues facing society. On September 10 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Miss America 2018 will be crowned by her predecessor, Savvy Shields. Representing Arizona this year is Valley native MaddieRose Holler — an inspiring young leader making her mark in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Catching up with her before the big day, Holler shares her insights on the upcoming competition, the hard work it took to get here and her future plans. “I’m so ecstatic that the stage I once watched as a little girl on television, I actually get to compete on!” Holler exclaims. “However, I feel calm because I am trusting in my preparations." Holler, who grew up watching the Miss America competition on TV, began competing in pageants at the age of 13. By 15, she competed in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen – a little sister program to Miss America – under the guidance of a former Miss Arizona. Holler took home the title that year. “[Winning Miss America’s Outstanding Teen of 2013] changed everything for me. It marked the start of my journey in the Miss America Organization (MAO) and propelled me to compete again when eligible at the Miss level,” she explains. SEPTEMBER 2017 |

Two years later, Holler was eligible to play in the big leagues. She competed this June and was crowned the official Miss Arizona 2017. For Holler, the experience of winning was equal parts surreal and humbling. “[When they announced my name], I knew that I did it,” she recalls. “I couldn’t stop bawling my eyes out from sheer gratitude. It took a village to get me where I am today and in that moment, I felt like I not only achieved my goals, but also made my supporters proud.” Her biggest supporter is her mother, a Filipina immigrant. Having grown up in the Philippines with very little opportunity, Holler’s mother urged her early in life to be resilient, hardworking and unapologetic when chasing after her dreams. Winning Miss Arizona represented everything Holler’s mother had instilled in her as a young girl. “My mother has been an instrumental part in not only shaping me into the woman that I am today, but also preparing me for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. When I won, I vividly remember her coming up on stage where we hugged and cried for a good five minutes,” Holler fondly remembers. Prior to holding the title of Miss Arizona, Holler was not your average high school student. Not-so-average in the sense that she completed a year’s worth of college credits during her senior year of high school, which allowed her to begin college as a sophomore. She also participated in a multitude of extracurricular activities, including student council, national honor society, yearbook and varsity cheer. Dedicated to serving others, Holler also increased her volunteer hours with organizations around the Valley, specifically Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) and Military Family Support Group (www.militaryfamilysupportgroup.org). She successfully did all of this before earning her high school diploma. “I was a very ambitious high school student — sometimes it felt like I was running 24/8,” she laughs. With dreams of becoming a nationally syndicated anchor for live news – Gretchen Carlson, TV journalist and Miss America 1989 is one of her many idols – Holler knew she needed to be resourceful to attain her dream career. “Affording college was once a scary thought for me coming from a low-income family and being a first-generation college student,” she says. Since competing in Miss Arizona and Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen, Holler has accumulated nearly $14,000 in MAO scholarships and is funding her education at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Barrett, The Honors College. Holler is excited to be senior Sun Devil this fall – debt free, no less. “The organization has also given me the opportunity to enroll in the integrated master’s program after I complete my undergraduate studies,” she continues, “It’s been life changing for my education.” Holler’s to-do list has exponentially grown since being crowned Miss Arizona. Her discipline, hard work and perseverance make her well-equipped for the job and all of its responsibilities. Whether she is working out five to six times a week with the Miss Arizona official trainer, maintaining healthy eating habits, rehearsing her vocal talent piece, participating in media events UPTOWN |

and interviews, or being an active volunteer and advocating her platform issue – Holler seizes each busy day as an opportunity to grow. “There is never a usual day for me, but that’s what makes the job and this lifestyle exciting – it is practically the best internship of my life,” she explains. Her heart is as big as her ambitions. For years, Holler has been an active volunteer at PCH. She is also an ambassador with MAO’s official partner and national platform, Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). CMN is committed to raising funds and awareness for 170 children’s hospitals across North America. During her year of service as Miss Arizona, Holler will create incentives that benefit the Valley’s CMN hospitals, PCH and Tucson Medical Center for Children. She will also headline Miss Arizona’s service project, Bucks and Bears, on Miss America Serves Day. The project benefits the children of PCH by raising funds and donating teddy bears to the hospital. “This work is important to me because I have a major passion for kids and families,” she explains. “I want to do that much more as Miss Arizona by being at the hospitals every week and committing to a set number of hours. In doing so, my hope is to help ease children and their family’s day in some capacity.” Her platform issue – supporting our military and their families – was inspired by her father’s 20-year service as a U.S. Navy corpsman. Holler’s passion was solidified when her brother enlisted and was deployed overseas on two separate tours. “It is our civic duty to give thanks to our service members, active or retired, and their families for their sacrifice and dedication to the well-being of our nation,” she declares. Utilizing her desire to serve those who serve us, Holler assumed the role of president for the Valley nonprofit organization, Military Family Support Group. Prior to her newfound role, Holler had been a faithful volunteer for four years. The organization welcomes volunteers from all over the Phoenix-metro area – including school and church groups, active duty service members, Girl and Boy Scouts, veterans and military families – to support the nation’s troops by creating and shipping care packages overseas. Holler has been learning the ropes of leading a nonprofit organization, which entails wearing many hats. “It’s been a whirlwind of a ride, to say the least!” she exclaims. “Since stepping in as president, the organization gained memberships with the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, National Council of Nonprofits and Society for Nonprofits, which has been a wealth of knowledge in addition to learning from longtime volunteers and leadership.” Academic superstar: check. Exemplary leader: check. Patriot and humanitarian: check and check. Through her consistent vie to be a better leader, philanthropist, student and overall human, Holler shows that it’s just as important to the MAO organization to be beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. “Miss America isn’t about the crown and sash (although those are perks), it’s about the opportunity and scholarship,” Holler says. “I try to use social media as a tool to highlight my story of coming from a low-income, culturally diverse family and how MAO gave me the opportunity to fund my education and raise awareness for a platform close to my heart.” For more information about MAO, visit www.missamerica.org. | SEPTEMBER 2017

Not only is a power couple comprised of two people who are unified in love, they are unified in life. Either individually or together, they are forces within their industry. Both of them are go-getters, entrepreneurs, trailblazers, innovators and share a common vision. No matter their profession, it’s clear that power couples seek to make a contribution bigger than themselves for the greater good of humanity. For that – and so many more reasons – we present five driven duos.

Acts of Love:
MATTHEW AND LEEANN DEARING
In acting, the scene in which a future romantic couple meets for the first time is called a meet cute – and Matthew and Leeann Dearing certainly have a fitting real-life meet cute. In 2007, the actors met starring opposite each other in a play, both sensing almost right away that this was “it.” They got married in 2008, at just 24 and 26 years old, so in many ways they grew up together, both personally and professionally. Since 2007, The Dearings have owned Dearing Studio, an actors’ training facility where they have coached thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to roles in TV and film. Beyond that, they are both working actors who stay busy in Arizona’s commercial market, with credits that include ads such as GoDaddy for the Super Bowl, Discount Patio and Grand Canyon University. Even their two young children have followed in their footsteps. But it wasn’t bright lights from the start. The Dearings began their business by teaching acting classes out of a doctor’s office lobby during off-hours. The tiny (but free) space allowed them to save money to lay a foundation for a dream much bigger than the two of them – inspiring others to pursue their own dreams. It’s a dream rooted in The Dearings’ belief that there is work to be done in the Valley’s acting industry, and they intend to leave it better than they found it. With a vision of never-ending growth, The Dearings say that love is at the core of what they do. The couple’s mission is to spread light and love into the acting industry and the world, while always remaining curious and open to innovation. Throughout their journey, a few constants have remained: sharing the same
passions and dreams, working as a team, and pushing each other to be better while still loving each other exactly where they are, their definition of a power couple. “There are no limitations to where we may end up and what we are capable of doing, but wherever we are – mentally, SEPTEMBER 2017 |

physically, emotionally and spiritually – we choose to be grateful,” The Dearings say. “We both still enjoy our marriage, 10 years in. That takes attention and effort, but the payoff is incredible. You are the playwright of your life – manifest success, joy and get creative!”
Leading the Way:
LUKE AND NAJLA KAYYEM What’s meant to be will be – so is the love story between Luke and Najla Kayyem, who met in seventh grade, dated throughout high school, and went their separate ways during and shortly after college, before reconnecting and marrying in 2006. Though The Kayyems are in different fields, both have made it their lifeworks to connect with, support and help others. They seek to inspire those around them to be better as they move forward toward a common goal. Truly, they are leaders of their respective packs. As the owner of management consulting firm Kayyem Marketing, Najla connects people through networking, sales and marketing, and is responsible for launching and marketing some of the country’s most notable mixed-use developments. And with more than 17 years in the fitness industry, Luke transforms lives as a master lifestyle coach, vlogger and inspirational speaker, as well as through his virtual fitness program, The Fittest Tribe Alive. He’s especially passionate about empowering men to find their sense of purpose, and hosts mastermind groups to help men become better fathers, husbands and leaders. Together, The Kayyems are fiercely committed to health living, with a focus on longevity and a higher quality of life – and making that possible for others. They have raised nearly $200,000 for local charities and organizations, including Arizona Baseball Charities, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Playworks, and Pat Tillman Foundation. The parents of two also launched a Health and Wellness Week at Desert Canyon Elementary School, which focused on the importance of exercise, wholesome food choices, and a healthcentered lifestyle. The Kayyems, who are regularly featured health and wellness experts on TV
and in national lifestyle publications, say their “glass half-full” outlook has led them to live a life full of purpose, passion and positivity while deliberately making time for their family and each other. “To us, a power couple means that we show up every day and support each UPTOWN |

other’s individual goals, life goals and family goals. We both do work that will create more opportunities and achievements, individually and collectively. We maintain consistency day in and day out with our beliefs, goals and follow through on our commitments.”
Empowering Couples:
AARON AND JOCELYN FREEMAN Aaron and Jocelyn Freeman are dedicated to being a new kind of power couple. Focused on creating a life and relationship of ease, alignment and being purpose-driven, they have made it their mission – and have even written a book – to redefine what “power couple” means. Having met four years ago, The Freemans each left successful careers (Aaron as a corporate engineer, Jocelyn as a nurse) to fulfill on their joint vision: to experience financial freedom and contribution through speaking, investing and mentorship, while empowering couples to fulfill their dreams together and, ultimately, lowering the divorce rate. Describing themselves as empowered, bold and purposeful, The Freemans, who have shared the stage with Tony Robbins and were nominated for Phoenix Business Journal’s 2017 “40 Under 40,” are an undeniable example of these qualities. As trained leadership coaches and even ordained ministers who officiate wedding ceremonies, The Freemans recall that as they began mentoring others, they saw their lives transform – and a business, brand and belief was built. Now, they lead speaking events, host a relationship podcast on iTunes called EmPowered Couples, host a monthly couples brunch at JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn, coach and mentor people worldwide, and are angel investors in a socially conscious business. Fittingly, their published book is titled The New Power Couple. So, how do The Freemans define the new power couple? Rather than categorized by status, influence or wealth – which are based on the perception of comparison, judgement and the idea of perfection – the new power couple is where each person is aligned with their individual desires and purpose first before joining
together to form a collaborative vision. It’s this collaboration that is so central to The Freemans’ marriage, business and service to others. “Our No. 1 value in being a power couple is our commitment to growing as individuals – physically, financially and spiritually – so that our SEPTEMBER 2017 |

relationship is an example and invitation for others to live and love full out,” they say. “As Jim Rohn has stated, ‘service to many leads to greatness’ and couples creating strong relationships, leading to a declining divorce rate, is the legacy we hope to leave.”
Tech for the World:
HAMID AND LAWDAN SHOJAEE
Changing the world through the technology space is the commitment of Hamid and Lawdan Shojaee. The couple, who met nearly 20 years ago and got married eight months later, now run two local software companies in addition to being parents of two. In 2002, Hamid founded Axosoft, a project management software used by more than 11,000 teams worldwide. During this time, Lawdan received her doctorate in physical therapy, practiced for a year, and then became the director of development for Mission Montessori School before taking over as CEO of Axosoft so Hamid could focus on running his new creation, Pure Chat, a live chat software. At the heart of their work, The Shojaees seek to create technological advancements that will outlive and outperform their life expectancy, and, ultimately, make a positive contribution. And their vision is one rooted in humanity: “We want to leave this earth better than we found it, so we build software tools that help companies like NASA, Apple, IBM and many others be better at what they do. We provide them with the hammer that allows them to build what they need.” And The Shojaees are steadfast in their mission and stand firm in their beliefs, such as advocating for greater diversity in the tech space. They launched a female empowerment campaign, #ItWasNeverADress, which went viral – appearing on BuzzFeed, The New York Times, CNN and The Huffington Post – and, subsequently, started a scholarship for females in tech at Arizona State University. The ideals of improving the tech industry and shaping future generations transfer into the collaborative, contributive
culture of their companies. The dynamic duo preaches teamwork, communication and persistence in overcoming roadblocks, especially in the ever-changing tech landscape, walking the talk of their family motto: Never give up! You get up and you work as hard as you can and that UPTOWN |

is all that is asked of you. “We don’t give up. When we fail, we just get back up and do it again,” The Shojaees say. “The end game is the privilege of getting up and working alongside brilliant minds and helping change the world.”
Community First:
The power of community and service to others is at the heart of Rodney Riley and Jill Krigsten Riley’s partnership. The newlyweds – they were married at Sanctuary Resort in February – are passionate about helping those in need. Though they each have busy, successful careers, they prioritize giving back and continuing to grow, individually and as a couple. Jill, an avid yogi and hiker, is a media consultant for Cox Media and a former director of sales for 12 News and 12news.com, while Rodney is the regional sales director of investor services for CBRE’s Southwest region, in addition to being selected to this year’s Valley Leadership Class and a competitive Masters cyclist. Above all, though, The Rileys are deeply devoted to bettering the community. They are wish granters for Make-AWish Arizona and also serve on the board for Florence Crittenton. Jill devotes her time to a plethora of other causes; she is a board member for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Leadership Circle and Make-AWish Arizona (and co-chair for the 2018 Wish Ball), on the Heart Ball committee, and has chaired the Dream Bags fundraiser for the Teaming Up for Girls Luncheon for the past four years. The Rileys stand as a unified team living by a shared personal truth: True power means having the ability to help the lives of others. “Our vision is to care and then care more – about anyone and anything we do in life. That means never giving up on trying to be better in every aspect of life.” Central to these ideals, The Rileys credit surrounding themselves with a

Every Body is a Work of Art Dr. Marc Malek, MD of Marc Malek Plastic Surgery
IN EVERYBODY IS a work of art. This simple yet powerful phrase is the first thing that greets visitors to the Marc Malek Plastic Surgery website. It’s placement and emphasis on ‘work of art’ is 100% intentional. “I am simply recognizing that everyone is innately beautiful. I just help patients visualize the potential that is within each of them, both figuratively and anatomically,” explains Dr. Marc Malek. Plastic surgery combines Malek’s two passions: art and science. By age 9, he already knew that plastic surgery was the right path to pursue. He received his plastic surgery and reconstructive training at the prestigious Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine. With 17 years of experience in private practice as a board certified plastic surgeon, Malek is highly sought-after by Scottsdale patients. His artisan hands focus on reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries, sculpting his patients’ ideal figures and restoring their youthful faces. His areas of specialty include body, breast and facial procedures. Malek also offers patients noninvasive treatments such as Botox, Restylane, Juvederm and numerous other injectables. Since opening his practice in 2001, Malek has continued to adhere to a very personalized and meticulous approach. From a patient’s first consultation to their final postoperative visit, Malek gives every single patient his undivided attention and support throughout the entirety of their cosmetic journey. “I truly care for my patients like my own family. I have always wanted to help people, and I feel that this profession has given me the best opportunity to utilize my skills and compassion for the interest and safety of my patients,” he says. Marc Malek Plastic Surgery’s promise is to deliver the absolute best care in terms of safety and results. Malek is a man of his word. Because of this, his practice has grown exponentially by an influx of satisfied patient referrals. You cannot find his name online without five-out-of-five stars sitting beside it. Malek was featured in the 2016 edition of Doctors of the Desert, and since then he has opened a new and advanced center
for aesthetics and skin care. The center is all inclusive, offering both surgical and noninvasive rejuvenation procedures. Malek also launched his own laboratory formulated, probiotic-based skin care line, NutriPlex Beauty, which combats aging skin. The probiotic active base is the ‘latest science’ in skin rejuvenation. This powerful ingredient is the best discovery since vitamin C. “I’m extremely excited to have just opened our new practice as it has been my long standing personal and professional dream to provide a diversity of options all in one modern, spacious and very elegantly designed setting,” Malek elaborates. As one of the leading plastic surgeons in the Valley, Malek utilizes his personal approach and mastery of sculpting to give patients the results they are looking for. Saving Skin
Dr. Anne Walter, MD, FAAD of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists
IT’S A FACT that the skin is our largest organ, so taking care of it – especially in sunny Arizona – is a major responsibility. And one that Dr. Anne Walter, founder and medical director of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists, welcomes with joy. A Board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, the Harvard graduate attended medical school at the University of Southern California. She subsequently completed an internship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and a residency at Northwestern University, and an accredited Mohs surgery and cosmetic fellowship. Walter’s path was a dream realized from a young age. “I have wanted to be a physician since I was a toddler. My grandfather was a general surgeon, and I grew up wanting to ‘be like Poppie,’” she says. “Medicine offers a unique fulfillment that other professions cannot compete with. There is no other field where people share their lives with you in the same way.” In 2015, Walter and her husband, Keith, founded Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists. The Scottsdale practice provides expert medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological care in a highly personalized, boutique setting. “Seeing the practice grow and getting positive feedback from patients has been very rewarding,” Walter says. “Of course, the ultimate compliment is when patients trust us with the care of their family and friends.” Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists offers a comprehensive range of services to treat any condition of the skin, hair, and nails as well as providing the latest cosmetic treatments to help patients look and feel their best. Not surprisingly, the most common reason patients visit Walter is for a skin cancer screening. “I am very passionate about all aspects of dermatology but have a special interest in skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “I pride myself on trying to make what could otherwise be a very stressful diagnosis into a positive experience for my patients. It is very rewarding to have a patient start his/her day with a cancer but leave our office knowing that they are cancer-free!” Not only is Walter passionate about skin cancer treatment,
she is highly skilled in it. “While many dermatologists may perform Mohs surgery, a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon dedicated an additional year after their dermatology residency to refining their Mohs micrographic surgery and surgical reconstruction skills,” Walter says. Patients will find that Walter offers a wealth of skin cancer prevention advice, and they’ll also find an expert who walks her talk. Though she admits she rarely used sunscreen as a collegiate water polo player, the fair-skinned physician now shields her skin with sunscreen, sun protective clothing, and a large floppy sun hat. So what keeps Walter going? “The constantly evolving science behind the skin keeps me interested and learning, and I love that each day presents a different mix of patients and challenges,” Walter says. “Equally important, it is a privilege to interact and develop relationships with patients based on mutual trust to enhance their health and well-being.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DERMATOLOGY & SKIN SURGERY SPECIALISTS, CALL 480.418.1087 OR VISIT WWW.SKINSPECIALISTSOFAZ.COM.

A Leading Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Sumer L. Daiza, MD of Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale
THE NUMBER OF women in the medical field is rising; yet, women continue to be underrepresented in the field of surgery. Dr. Sumer L. Daiza, a double board certified plastic surgeon, is a leading lady in the operating room with over 15 years of experience. Daiza believes there are good female and male plastic surgeons just like any other profession, but that being a female has some advantages. Her patients, male and female alike, will often tell her that they feel more comfortable with a female surgeon because they sense a better connection. Daiza has a keen eye and ear for attention. Her practice, Plastic Surgery of Scottsdale, is a boutique style practice. This allows her to be 100 percent dedicated to her patients 100 percent of the time. She even gives patients her personal number. “I am very hands-on and give my patients a lot of one-on-one time. Every patient has my cell phone number so as to feel comfortable that he or she may reach me anytime,” she explains. Being present throughout every patient’s procedure — from first consultation to postoperative visit — is this surgeon’s top priority. Bonds quickly forge between Daiza and her patients since it takes a collaborative effort between them to reach a final goal. In fact, some of her relationships span through lineages! “What I do is very personal and patients become like family to me. I have seen generations of the same family — the grandparents, parents and children,” she smiles. Her practice is one in which patients find comfort due to the philosophy set in place: treat patients like family. Daiza believes it is a privilege to be chosen to perform a life changing procedure for a patient. For entrusting her, she provides the safest and highest quality of medical care that delivers the most natural appearing results. From her outstanding patient reviews to accolades in the media — she has been voted as a Phoenix “Top Doc” by
her peers for 10 years and was featured in the 2016 edition of Doctors of the Desert — Daiza is a surgeon patients trust for optimal results. “We are very excited for our new offerings this year. We are expanding our staff, adding an aesthetician, and will offer new services like vaginal rejuvenation, hair restoration and laser services,” Daiza comments. Daiza performs all aspects of cosmetic surgery like breast, body and face procedures. She is known for the mommy makeover, which involves operating on the areas most affected by pregnancy. She also offers a range of cosmetic injectables done personally by her, including Botox, Dysport, Restylane, Juvéderm, Voluma and Volbella as well as chemical peels. Daiza is an aficionado of cosmetic surgery. She shows up for her patients, both in office and over the phone, and acts as role model for women aspiring to pursue this speciality. Making Miracles
Dr. Millie Behera, MD, FACOG, FRCSC of Bloom Reproductive Institute MOST PEOPLE DREAM of having children, and for those who find it doesn’t come as easy, Dr. Millie Behera, the medical director and founder of Bloom Reproductive Institute, helps makes those dreams a reality. Given this, you could say Behera, who has been practicing reproductive medicine for more than 10 years and is also an adjunct faculty member at University of Arizona and Duke University, is a miracle maker of sorts – and it’s a task the compassionate, kind-hearted physician doesn’t take lightly. Having completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and fertility at Duke University followed by practicing academic medicine there, Behera founded Bloom Reproductive Institute in 2015 to address the unique needs of fertility patients and their health care challenges on a more personalized level. “We wanted patients to have a place where they feel comfortable and supported in every aspect of their fertility treatment, with a team of providers who are not only experts but have genuine compassion,” says Behera, who is board-certified in both OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinology and fertility. Behera specializes in all aspects of these vocations, including in vitro fertilization, genetic testing, egg freezing/fertility preservation, and fertility enhancing surgery. The practice’s success rates are among the highest nationwide, even higher than the national average, and still rising. Behera attributes this to the practice’s state-ofthe-art IVF laboratory technology and expertise. The personalized approach to fertility is also a major factor in patients’ success rates and feeling at ease throughout their journey. “Each couple or person is different, and they deserve a unique treatment plan. We aim to create a unique bond with each patient where they feel supported, have their questions answered, and can speak with us about anything. We are all dedicated to our patients and their dream of becoming parents.” Behera and her practice’s philosophy is summarized by the four Es: Expertise, Experience, Ethics and Empathy, all of which are evident in the way Behera – a mother of four herself – handles the delicate situation faced by patients trying to conceive.
Like any career in medicine, fertility can be rife with challenges, yet these trying challenges also present the greatest reward for Behera. “I love taking on each challenge as it comes, as difficult as it may be, as the reward is even greater when we are able to overcome complex health issues to achieve a successful pregnancy with a healthy baby.” It’s clear that the evolution of Bloom Reproductive Institute and Behera’s patients continues to, well, bloom. “My favorite part of the journey is the moment I get to meet babies after they are born,” Behera says. “It feels like we are always connected and we are able to watch that baby grow from a tiny egg to the first little heartbeat to the precious little child in front of me. “The most rewarding aspect is helping bring new life into this world as we help patients achieve their dream of parenthood.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BLOOM REPRODUCTIVE INSTITUTE, CALL 480.434.6565 OR VISIT WWW.FERTILITYBLOOM.COM.

A Strong Foundation
Ali and Tamir Mosharrafa, MDs of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery
A STRUCTURE CANNOT endure without a good, solid foundation. The surgeons of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery built their practice upon three tenets: integrity, relationships and results. This foundation — known as The Mosharrafa Experience — is the reason their practice thrives. Since 1997, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery has been serving patients in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. The practice’s board certified surgeons, Dr. Ali Mosharrafa and Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa, have 35 years of combined experience in the field and a lifetime of experience as brothers. “[Working with my brother] is a unique experience that allows for a trusted business partner each and every day,” Ali says. “[Ali] has always been the person that I look most up to,” Tamir adds, “Getting to work with him every day is an amazing blessing,” The surgeons offer all aspects of cosmetic procedures, including body contouring and breast and facial surgeries. They also do breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients or women with an increased genetic risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Within the doctors’ practice is Mosharrafa Skin Rejuvenation Center, offering patients medical grade skin care products and aesthetic treatments to help turn back the hands of time. When it comes to their patients, the doctors go above and beyond. Their concierge style service grants patients 24/7 access to the doctors directly. The surgeons get to know their patients by fostering relationships built on trust and understanding their personal struggles and goals. At every preoperative, operative and postoperative visit, patients receive the doctors’ full time and attention. “It is impossible to operate on a stranger, which is why we take the time to get to know each of our patients,” Tamir explains. With modern plastic surgical techniques, performed with precision and expertise, both doctors help patients look as good as they feel. There is no better feeling in the world to either of them than helping improve the overall quality of a patient’s life.
Why improve the quality of life for one person when you can impact the lives of many? In an effort to be more effective giving back to the Valley community, the surgeons co-founded Beauty for Good, a 501c(3) non-profit organization. The practice donates a portion of proceeds from every cosmetic surgery they perform to Beauty for Good. Through Beauty for Good, the surgeons provide monetary support to and create awareness for organizations like The Phoenix Dream Center, Prevent Child Abuse Arizona and Singleton Moms. “Cosmetic surgery is a beautiful thing when it improves the life of one person. What an even greater experience it is when it improves the lives of many,” Tamir shares. Since moving to the Valley — Ali in 1996 and Tamir in 2004 — the Mosharrafa surgeons and brothers have left an imprint on the lives of their patients and on the Phoenix-metro community. Their foundation is one that can endure. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MOSHARRAFA PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 602.513.8133 OR VISIT WWW.MOSHARRAFA.COM.

Veteran Turned Holistic Dentist Dr. Jason A. Jones, DMD of Pure Smiles
“I LIKE TO SAY, ‘Be kind to your dentist. He has fillings too.’” Dr. Jason A. Jones is no stranger to dental work. He understands the hesitation often associated with visiting the dentist. “I have had some painful experiences as a child and didn’t like almost all of my dentists growing up, so I know what patients are going through,” he recalls. His mission as a holistic dentist is to create healthful smiles by minimizing any discomfort. “I spend quality time giving my full attention and it shows in the results,” Jones says. Jones served in the US Navy for six years and was deployed overseas three times. After leaving the military, he attended Penn State for his Bachelor of Science degree in premedicine and received his doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He migrated to Santa Monica where he worked in a hospital treating compromised patients, including those with oral cancers. “Working in a hospital made me want to help patients gain overall health beyond the oral cavity,” he explains. Four years ago, he relocated to Phoenix to be closer to his in-laws and benefit from the sunshine as an outdoor enthusiast. In his spare time he enjoys rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking the Valley’s scenic trails. “The outdoors here is quite amazing, especially coming from the Pacific Northwest, [which is where I am originally from]. I plan to be in Arizona for a long time,” he states. Jones opened Pure Smiles — a center for advanced and holistic dentistry — in Scottsdale this past January. He works alongside his dental hygienist wife, Jenna Jones. Their mini goldendoodle, Penelope Von Doodle, is currently being trained to be a certified therapy dog for the practice’s patients. “[Opening my own practice] has been an exciting and stressful process, but we love every moment of it!” Pure Smiles offers exceptional service with a dedication to comfort and compassion. Jones and his team carefully assess each procedure and select high-quality products to help
preserve and protect each patient’s overall well being. “I look at the body as a whole and relate it to the dentition and vice versa.” He continues, “I strive in making sure the patient is receiving the best treatment in their best interest.” In additional to general care, Jones’s expertise ranges from safe amalgam removal to ozone therapy and dental implants. Admittedly, smile rehabilitation and surgical cases are his favorite. He uses Platelet Rich Plasma/Fibrinogen, a concentrated source of blood plasma with different growth factors, and cutting edge technologies, including a 3D cone beam imaging and intra-oral scanner, to perform minimally invasive and painless procedures. “I love helping others in route to health and watching patients see a new side of themselves. I work closely with other specialists locally and, as a team, we can help get patients on track to a healthy smile and body.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT PURE SMILES, CALL 480.585.1612 OR VISIT WWW.PURESMILESAZ.COM.

Road to Recovery
Dr. Reyes Topete, MD of Fountain Hills Recovery
THE TREATMENT TEAM of Fountain Hills Recovery (FHR) is dedicated to helping clients achieve long term sobriety. They do this by building recovery plans unique to the needs of every person and providing them with the tools necessary to succeed. “It is such a profound and rewarding feeling to see an individual progress and discover their new, sober life. This is exactly why I became an addictionologist and why I love working with FHR,” explains Dr. Reyes Topete. Native of Arizona, Topete stayed in his beloved home state for his studies and residency. He attended Arizona State University for undergrad, University of Arizona for medical school and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. During his residency, Topete developed a passion for working with those affected by addiction and a curiosity about the science of addiction. He specialized in addiction medicine in 2008, is a full time addictionologist and an integral part of the FHR’s team. As FHR’s Medical Director, Topete helps clients with the medical aspect of their substance use disorders. By providing leadership and guidance to the center’s medical personnel, Topete ensures that every client’s road to recovery is safe and effective. “We always strive to assure our clients receive the highest standard of care both medically and clinically,” he says. Collaborative communication between client and treatment team is central to FHR’s approach. Topete is joined by the center’s clinical director, primary therapists and experienced staff. Together, they conduct an initial assessment of every client’s current situation before formulating a workable plan for recovery. “After our initial assessment, a variety of therapeutic approaches are available to maximize the probability of a positive long term outcome for the client,” Topete comments. FHR offers 30, 60 and 90 day programs with two living facilities. The facilities are fully stocked with luxury amenities — including an infinity pool, dry sauna, onsite chiropractic services
and more — to promote healing and wellness during recovery. Clients receive a ‘continuum of care,’ as Topete calls it. This continuum of care involves daily interactions with other clients and the center’s team. From a patient’s first day, FHR It is a community of support and encouragement. While working with addiction clients has its challenges, Topete cannot imagine doing anything else but this kind of work. “It is difficult seeing a patient relapse and the destructive effects of the disease, but the most rewarding thing about my job is seeing a former patient in sobriety years later,” he says. Ask any one of Topete’s patients, and they will tell you that he is professional, caring and competent. He understands his patient’s individual needs and dedicates himself to helping them become sober and stay sober. 20/20 Care
Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch, MD of Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center
THEY SAY THE EYES are the window to the soul, and for Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch of Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center, the statement couldn’t be truer. A native Arizonan, McCulloch has been practicing in the Valley since 1988. After graduating from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, he completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in corneal and external disease at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. But McCulloch says coming home to Arizona was an easy choice – and a career in eye care seemed to always be a natural fit. As a kid, McCulloch loved working with his hands and was fascinated by science. “My passion for good eyesight started in the fifth grade when the teacher noticed I was ‘squinting.’ An eye test let my parents know I was nearsighted,” he says. “With my first pair of glasses, suddenly I could see the leaves on the trees. But even more important – as an aspiring baseball player – I could now see a fast ball and my batting average soared! My love affair with vision took off from there.” As the senior cataract surgeon at Horizon Eye Specialists, McCulloch is responsible for mentoring other doctors. Together, McCulloch and his team have seen more than 300,000 patients for comprehensive eye care, from annual exams to LASIK, corneal transplant and glaucoma surgeries. McCulloch himself has performed more than 10,000 LASIK and refractive treatments, as well as 30,000 cataract or corneal transplant procedures. “This amount of experience helps with understanding challenging situations and how to improve patients’ lives,” he says. “Often, using cataract, LASIK or a corneal surgery, patients can have their sight corrected despite being told in the past that nothing could be done.” As a specialist in refractive surgery, he also serves as medical director for the practice’s LASIK center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. Beyond these credentials, Horizon Eye Specialists and McCulloch believe in “Eye Care Like No Other,” practicing a
patient-first philosophy while striving to be at the forefront of technology and surgical skills. He notes that it’s this dedication to cutting-edge technology that differentiates him from others in his field. In fact, he is the first MD in Arizona to perform the newest cataract lens exchange procedure, the Symfony intraocular lens, which is the only extended depth-of-focus lens for cataract sufferers. Truly, McCulloch’s passion and purpose is being able to give the gift of sight. “I have always felt so passionate about giving people good eyesight. Repairing damaged eyes is tremendously rewarding to me. A patient’s smile after having LASIK or after removing a cataract is beyond fulfilling. A corneal transplant changes a life forever!” And in return, he feels the effects of this gift. “I am so fortunate to have the most wonderful job any person could have,” McCulloch says. “Every day I can bring delight and happiness to people. How extraordinary is that?” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HORIZON EYE SPECIALISTS & LASIK CENTER, CALL 602.467.4966 OR VISIT WWW.HORIZONLASERVISION.COM.

HOLY GUACAMOLE!
Valley chefs are pitted against one another in the ultimate battle of avocado dips BY GABBY RICHMAN

he founders of the Arizona Taco Festival present the second annual Rock The Guac. The event serves as a final countdown to the taco- and tequila-filled fest (taking place in October at Salt River Fields) that the city has come to know and love over the past eight years. “Basically, with the explosive growth of the Arizona Taco Festival, we wanted to throw a more intimate lead-up event that raises money for charity, so we created Rock The Guac,” explains David Tyda, cofounder of Rock The Guac and Arizona Taco Festival. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona, a nonprofit organization which heals homeless and abused children through artistic expression. at Hotel Valley Ho, but the festival is moving to The Camby this year, with attendance capped at 300 people. “We’re excited to work with this new property on some unique entertainment, like flamenco dancing performances and lucha libre wrestling – one of the most popular elements of the Taco Fest,” Tyda says. But, perhaps the most exciting draw is the heated battle for Top Guac, in which the event will pit more than 12 of the Valley’s top chefs against each other for a friendly culinary battle. Guests will taste varieties of the Mexican food staple to see who will reign supreme, winning the ultimate guacamole title. “Last year, we saw some really gourmet versions of this classic dish – some chefs used bacon, lobster, chocolate, rare spices, and even peanut butter,” Tyda recalls. “Expect more of the unexpected this year.” Forest Jamrik of La Hacienda took home the coveted prize of Rock The SEPTEMBER 2017 |

Some additional participating chefs this year include: Dushyant Singh of Artizen, Crafted American Kitchen & Bar at The Camby Hotel; Richard Hinojosa of CRUjiente Tacos; Aaron Pool of Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soup; Alex Stratta of Match at The Found:RE; Doug Robson of Otro Café and Gallo Blanco; Aaron May of Goodwood Tavern and Malibu Burger Co.; Jennifer Russo of The Market by Jennifer’s; Laura Gonzalez of Taqueria Centro; Chops Smith of Chico Malo; Sergio Gaona of Creations by Sergio; and George Alatriste of The Mission. Tickets to Rock The Guac come with access to a gourmet taco station provided by The Camby, and two drink tickets that are good for Casa Noble margaritas or Dos Equis cervezas. Most importantly, the entry includes unlimited guacamole samples. “You know how people always ask, ‘is it extra for guacamole?’ On National Guacamole Day, you can eat all the guac you want, and it’s not extra!” Tyda exclaims.

re you ready for some football? How about some of fanfare for your hometown team? While, rightfully so, many local bars and restaurants bleed Arizona Cardinals red this time of year, there is no denying the Valley is still very much an area of transplants from across the U.S., many of which bring their hometown allegiances with them. As such, many local venues cater to specific fan bases during football season. With that, follow your team to its loyal watering hole!

Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row: DENVER BRONCOS Going into its fourth season as the only officially sanctioned Broncos bar in Arizona, Dierk’s sees hundreds of the 2,500 Arizona Broncos fan club members each week during the season. On game day, they offer drink specials on beer and specialty cocktails as well as seasonal Denver-inspired menu items including the “Mile High Buger” and an orange queso dip complete with blue corn chips to reflect the team colors. The bar also raffles off Broncos memorabilia during the games, and whenever the Broncos score, the in-house DJ spins the team fight song. www.dierkswhiskeyrow.com. Harold’s Cave Creek Corral: PITTSBURG STEELERS This popular Western bar and restaurant is affectionately known as “Heinz Field West” during football season. On any given Sunday, expect 700 Steelers fans – towels and all – cheering on their team on one of the 25 flat-screen TVs while a team-themed DJ plays more than 40 Steelers songs throughout the day. Not only does the bar transform into all things black and gold, their menu does too, boasting “Primanti Brothers” sandwiches, “Ben Roethlis(burger)s,” Iron City beer and other fan favorites. And, they give back while cheering as well; Harold’s estimates they’ve raised more than $100,000 for local nonprofits as a result of raffles, silent auctions and other fundraisers held during games. www.haroldscorral.com. Sandbar Mexican Grill: GREEN BAY PACKERS Cheeseheads, rejoice! Sandbar Desert Ridge has been an official Green Bay Packers bar since opening six years ago. Like Harold’s, their menu transforms (the cheese curds are a must) each Sunday to reflect Packer fans’ favorite game day comfort foods. And, in further homage to Green Bay’s home state of Wisconsin, Sandbar is also the go-to destination in the North Valley for Wisconsin Badger fans on Saturday. www.sandbaraz.com.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? I started out as a dishwasher at Coup Des Tartes and would observe the chef with great interest. That's when my love for cooking began. I began dedicating more time to help him with the preparation of food and enjoyed it so much that I found myself spending more and more time in the kitchen, learning the craft, and knew that by doing so, it would get me to become a chef one day. And here I am, cooking, creating, and loving what I do. THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU PROBABLY USE MOST IS… Basil. It's a very versatile ingredient and easy to make many wonderful and tasty dishes with. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… A soccer player. I grew up in Mexico, playing and watching everyone around me play soccer. Most of our social gatherings were [centered] around the game. It is also a very good way to make lots of money! WHEN YOU’RE NOT COOKING, WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU? On my days off you will always find me surrounded by my huge family, enjoying great Mexican food and music. We have weekly family gatherings. I am one of 14 brothers and sisters, so you can get a picture of the amount of activity going on with lots of kids everywhere. WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Hamburgers for sure! Once in a while on my drive home from work I stop at Jack in the Box and get a double bacon burger. Since I'm always trying out new dishes at the restaurant, when I get out of this kitchen, I treat myself to simple junk food like a delicious and calorie-loaded burger.
CHEF CONVERSATIONS
FAVORITE FOOD MEMORY: I have great food memories from childhood. Birria has been a tradition in my family. It is a Mexican dish from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It consists of a spicy stew made from goat meat, and uses traditional Mexican exotic chiles and spices. Because our family is so large, we get a whole goat and cook it. This tradition in Mexico always turns into a huge feast with music and dancing.

SAKE SWAP OUT Original Gravity’s take on a bloody mary BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
R
ecently opened restaurant, Original Gravity only serves beer, wine and sake. But, don’t think that stops the spot from mixing up some exciting, unique takes on classic cocktails. One of the highlights? The Sake Bloody Mary ($10), made with – you guessed it – sake instead of vodka. “We wanted a traditional brunch cocktail. We took our limitations with only serving beer and wine and made it an opportunity to be creative,” explains Original Gravity Co-owner Natasha Turra. You might be a little apprehensive to try this concoction, but take all preconceived notions and throw them out the window until you taste the smooth sipper. “Don’t judge it until you have tried it,” Turra cautions. Aside from the spirit switch, the libation is made up of the No. 1 customary ingredient – a house bloody mary mix. The drink is served in a pint glass with crushed ice, rim salt, lemon, and garnished with an olive and an IPA-glazed slice of bacon. The bloody mary was created by coowner Michelle Bocchino to pair with the restaurant’s upcoming brunch menu, which launches this fall. Additionally, Original Gravity (which contains two patios!) has 20 rotating beers, four wines on tap, and a constantly evolving tapas menu. s you pull up to this particular Camelback Canyon Estates cul-de-sac, all eyes will be on this newly constructed home. The custom property is striking, and likely unlike anything you have seen from the outside in the neighborhood. The contrast of the gray hues of paint on the majority of the home exterior with the natural shade of the wooden beams and porch overhang give a unique look that you might not find with many Phoenix dwellings — one that says simplistic yet comfortable at the same time. The minimalistic vibe is apparent at first glance, from the industrial looking fixtures to the square-shaped concept of the architecture to the glass panel inserts that cover the huge metal front door and the space above it. The distinctive style continues inside the 4,250-square-foot abode right away in the great room, adorned with wooden beams, large plank European Oak wood floors, and a one-of-a-kind gas fireplace that acts as a statement piece for the entire room. ast year for 2017, Audi introduced its fifth generation A4 sport sedan, which first appeared in 1995, replacing the aging Audi A80. Unless you park it side-by-side with the outgoing A4, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to discern a difference. Though don’t let the similar looks deceive you – the A4 is thoroughly redesigned, rides on a completely new platform, and has a slightly larger body. For 2018, the A4 is almost exclusively a carryover model from last year with the addition of now-standard heated front seats, which were optional last year. The A4 slots below Audi’s midsize A6 sedan and above the subcompact A3, sharing family resemblance and visual styling cues. Like all Audi products, the look UPTOWN |

inside and out is that of tailored perfection; like an Armani suit, it’s never out of style. The A4 is one of the smaller four-door sedans in its class, but it is highly refined. Build quality is superb, and it comes loaded with the latest in advanced active safety technology. It doesn’t take much time behind the wheel of the all-aluminum A4 to appreciate the significant improvements. But let’s be up front here – you’re going to pay for all this goodness. Powered by what I believe is the best 2.0-liter, turbo, four-cylinder engine in the industry, performance is 252 horsepower. While it’s not the most in its class, it’s still capable, well-intentioned, athletic and pleasingly adequate. It connects to a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. I didn’t like the high-tech shifter, finding it awkward to shift forward for reverse and push a button for park. Slightly wider and longer than the previous generation A4, interior space remains compromised in terms of leg, head and shoulder room. But that doesn’t detract from Audi’s traditional spectacular decor. Every shape is purposely and elegantly sculptured, while the switchgear is gorgeous and machined to operate with surgical precision. Add in perfectly contoured leather seats, the Bang & Olufsen surround sound system, an LED interior lighting package, and the state-of-the-art Audi virtual cockpit (a full glass digital display that replaces traditional analog gauges) and you’re seated in one of the most magnificent driving environments. On the road, the ride was noticeably improved; it was quieter and supple, yet controlled. Handling also felt secure; even when driving aggressively on twisty Arizona roads, body roll was held in check. Overall, the new fifth generation A4 emerges as an excellent execution of a luxury compact sedan, thoroughly delivering the goods when compared to the Mercedes-Benz C Class, BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS competitors.
THEin BESTthe Biz Why so many women, including celebrities in the entertainment and fitness industries, are becoming National Hair Loss devotees.
I
t’s an indisputable fact: women want beautiful hair. Throughout history, we’ve been obsessed with making it that way. Unfortunately, another fact is that the majority of women will face some sort of hair loss in their lifetime, and that presents a definite challenge in our quest for a lush, gorgeous ‘do. Female hair loss occurs for an astonishing variety of very common reasons. We can shed our strands post-pregnancy, when we’re stressed out or eating an unbalanced diet, or after surgery or weight loss – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hormones, medications, illnesses, and genetics can all play a role in diminishing our “crowning glory.” It’s a problem that doesn’t escape many women, even those in the high-profile entertainment and fitness industries. And when you live your life under the sharp gaze of the public eye, always expected to look your best, having less-than-luscious locks can hit especially hard. Enter National Hair Loss, a company that is fast becoming a favorite of its clientele – women and men, celebs and non-celebs alike – because of the unprecedented results people are achieving. The name pops up more and more frequently in outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter and Women’s Health Magazine, as those whose hair is a professional asset entrust National Hair Loss to preserve and maintain it. One such celebrity is Letitia Frye – a renowned motivational speaker and “Auctiontainer” who has helped raise over $200 million for charity alongside A-list stars. Her lifelong commitment to helping others, along with her endurance of two unspeakable tragedies, gave way to her unique and engaging speaking career. An avid runner all her life, Letitia was struck by a car while jogging, which left her with a severe concussion and traumatic brain
injury. Previous thyroid-related hair loss issues had led Letitia to seek help from National Hair Loss, and she sought them out within ten days of her accident to help with the trauma to her scalp. Within a few months, her hair was back and healthier than ever thanks to the interventions of the National Hair Loss team. When you demand a crowd’s attention and all eyes are on you, you want to feel your best … and now, Letitia does. National Hair Loss’s popularity is due to a combination of factors – for starters, it’s staffed by people who have firsthand experience with hair loss, either their own or a loved one’s. This lends to the supportive and understanding atmosphere so crucial for client success. They understand, perhaps better than most, that there are nearlyinnumerable reasons for hair loss, and that it requires much more than a one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why each client receives a comprehensive workup using cutting-edge technologies, and a program is specifically tailored to target their unique issues. “Through a hair analysis, we can learn about a lot of things, including nutritional deficiencies, concentrations of certain metals, and food intolerances,” says Carly Klein, founder of National Hair Loss, who makes it her personal mission to stay on top of the latest in hair therapies. When we start noticing thin patches or a drain full of clumps, it’s alarming at best, especially since we’re rarely sure why it’s happening. “Women don’t realize that some of the normal things they do can harm their hair,” Carly states. For example, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – a common treatment that, ironically, helps women feel and look younger and rejuvenated – can lead to

hair loss. But according to Carly, National Hair Loss can stabilize the hair so that there isn’t an issue, letting women reap the benefits of their HRT worry-free. “Lots of women, even those in the spotlight, struggle with hair loss,” she says. “But we’re masters at what we do.” And whether it’s genetics or medication or diet or another reason altogether, National Hair Loss has the perfect solution
to preserve and protect each precious strand. Watch for our upcoming series highlighting the personal hair loss challenges of several of your favorite local celebs!

ROSÉ REVOLUTION Drinking pink has never been so cool BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Kim Crawford Rosé – New Zealand Known worldwide as an industry leader in sauvignon blanc, this award-winning South African vineyard is starting to make similar waves in the rosé market thanks to this bottle, which is made from merlot grapes sourced across select vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The resulting flavor is soft and luscious with hints of watermelon and strawberry. $17.99 at Total Wine & More.
Josh Cellars Rosé – Central Coast, California In 2007, Joseph Carr launched Josh Cellars (named for his father), focused on developing wines that represent the best of California: bold, rich, approachable and balanced. Sourced from across many great California wine-growing regions, every vintage represents a labor of love. Released in recent months is this special rosé, a perfect blend of barbera, moscato and syrah with aromas of strawberries, white flowers and stone fruit. $14.99 at BevMo!

orget what you think you know about pink wine – especially the oft-maligned white zinfandels of your youth. All too commonly mistaken for a sugary sweet blend of red and white wines, rosés are actually made from a wide variety of grapes and can be found all around the globe in flavors from extra dry to quite sweet. Here is a look at some of our favorites from near and far, all with different blends of wine-grape varietals.
Julia’s Dazzle Pinot Gris Rosé – Walla Walla, Washington Developed by famed Long Shadows Vintners founder Allen Shoup and named after his granddaughter, this unique rosé of white pinot gris is sourced from a special block from The Benches Vineyard at Wallula in Horse Heaven Hills. Winemaker Gilles Nicault was chosen to craft this limited-production rosé for the skills he developed making wine in Provence, France. The use of pinot gris results in vibrant notes of strawberries, spice and cherry blossom. $19.99 at Total Wine & More.
Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé – South Africa At a time when most rosés were a byproduct of red wine fermentation, Mulderbosch launched a varietal of Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé from specially farmed vineyards specifically to produce rosé fruit. On arrival at the cellar, these early picked, specially selected grapes are vinified in the same manner in which an aromatic white wine would be, with the aim of producing a fresh, aromatic product. $11.99 at Total Wine & More.
Klinker Brick Grenache Rosé – Lodi, California
The Drop – Lodi, California
Made by the fifth-generation growersturned-vintners of Klinker Brick Winery, this mild yet slightly fruit-infused option is a satisfying blend of grenache, carignane, syrah, and mourvedre grapes. Neither too dry nor too sweet, there are definite hints of strawberry, grapefruit and melon, which work together on both nose and palate. $15 at Total Wine & More.
The Drop wine’s canned rosé is light and crisp with a hint of minerality – and available in trendy, convenient cans for easy transport. It is a blend of chenin blanc, zinfandel and syrah and sourced from a family-owned winery. Available in packs of four; $19.99 per pack at Arcadia Premium and DeFalco’s Italian Grocery. UPTOWN |

GET TWISTED Common Ground Culinary continues its Phoenix expansion BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
F
ourth generation restaurateur Christopher Collins, whose father is Wally Collins of the popular Wally’s Pub ‘n Grill in Arcadia, has come back to his roots with Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar, which he opened in August in the Biltmore Plaza Shopping Center on 32nd Street and Camelback in the space formerly occupied by Stella restaurant and – more famously – by Central Bistro and Zen 32 for years before that. “I was actually raised in the Biltmore – it’s home,” Collins says. “Ever since I first opened my first Twisted Grove in
Scottsdale two years ago, I’ve been looking to bring my take on modern American cuisine and cocktails to the neighborhood where I grew up.” According to Collins, in order to maintain Twisted Grove’s distinctively laid-back, “sip, snack and linger” vibe, big changes have been made to the familiar space. The restaurant’s main entrance, for example, is now split into two distinct options: the front door that longtime patrons of the space will be familiar with, but also a back door entrance complete with dedicated restaurant parking, and a valet (a first for the oft-crowded center). “We also did a complete overhaul on the dining room, installing comfortable, oversized tufted booths and community UPTOWN |

tables,” explains Collins, who also serves as chef-owner of the popular Grassroots Kitchen + Tap restaurants in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Wally’s American Gastropub and Sweet Provisions in Scottsdale – all which fall under the hood of Common Ground Culinary restaurant group. “Family artwork and a ‘leave-one, take-one’ cookbook library will round out the experience.” And then there is the food and drink. Twisted Grove’s new location also features the same compact, yet comprehensive, menu as the Scottsdale original, starting with perfect-for-sharing small plates including creamy, rich housemade burrata and tomatoes, Twisted oysters, and of course, the signature charred Brussels sprouts with candied bacon. There is also a variety of hearty bruschetta boards, farm fresh salads and bold sandwiches such as crispy grouper and the classic French dip piled high with shaved prime rib and topped with horseradish aioli. “Go big with lunch or dinner entrees such as house made pappardelle or cavatelli pastas, or skip straight to the dessert menu featuring Sweet Provisions,” says Collins, noting he will also offer weekend brunch with both a bloody mary bar and Champagne station as well as weekday happy hour deals from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Twisted boasts more than a dozen beers on draft and by the bottle as well as a mini menu of shandy options. There are also two dozen wines by the glass, and an expansive cocktail list with everything from strawberry Bellinis to mules for just $10 each. The restaurant even has its own play on the Tom Collins – of course simply called Collins in homage to their family. Twisted Grove is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The restaurant is located at 3160 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.730.3533; www.twistedgrove.com.
