We are in the final stretch of summer heat (sort of) and boy am I ready for the temperatures to get a bit cooler around here. With the exception of a road trip to Flagstaff, I’ll be enduring the remaining heat in Phoenix all month long.

Some things, however, give me solace – apart from the AC. There’s so many great hotel pools to lounge at this time of year, and they’re all offering refreshing drinks to sip (page 54). There’s also a huge amount of restaurants specializing in superfood-filled delights – think smoothies, acai bowls and juices – that are perfect to cool you off during summertime (page 58). Also, who doesn’t love a good summer soiree? Page 34 has all the necessities, from frozen treats to rentable games, for a backyard bash.

If you’re hating the heat, why not plan a getaway? Vienna, Austria (page 52) isn’t the closest, but it sure made its way to my bucket list after reading about all of the culture and history (and shopping!) it has to offer.

Lastly, we get to know renowned architect Wendell Burnette on page 26. The natural elements-influenced artist is based right here in uptown and is likely behind the design some of your favorite restaurants and hotels, including the famous Amangiri luxury desert resort and St. Francis restaurant. Pretty soon you’ll be recognizing his work everywhere you go!

Susan Schmitz saves homeless pets while capturing the natural world from behind her lens

What do technology management, mortgage loan origination, and nature and animal photography have in common? Not much, but that’s exactly the path that photographer and digital artist, Susan Schmitz took to get to where she is today.

While Schmitz now has a successful photography business

working with animals and travel groups, she spent more than two decades at a large mortgage company in the Detroit metropolitan area. There, she worked in front-end loan origination and backend operations, including IT management and quality control.

One day, Schmitz decided it was time for a new path.

Pulse UP CLOSE Creative Calling Schmitz’s secure career treated her well but it eventually became too stifling. She grew restless, which affected the rest of her life, and she realized a change had to be made “The technical nature of my job was not feeding the growing desires I had to do more with my time and to make a difference in the world,” she says.

With a constant sense of wanderlust, the self-described creative soul packed up and moved to Sedona to “find herself.”

“The beauty and serenity of the area definitely helped me to connect with my creative side,” she says.

It wasn’t long before the breathtaking landscape surrounding her new home quickly inspired Schmitz to start painting. There was just one problem with that: she had neither the talent nor the patience needed to paint the kind of masterpieces that she imagined. However, she was drawn to the photos she was taking to use as reference points for painting. From there she went all in on learning how to use her camera beyond pointing and shooting.

“In my spare time, I taught myself the art of photography. I scoured the web for tutorials and read every instruction manual I could get my hands on,” Schmitz recalls.

As she continued to learn more about photography, Schmitz knew she wanted to make a living from it.

“I started photographing families. I’m pretty introverted and was very uncomfortable with working with people, but I loved photographing their pets. I’ve always had a deep love and respect for animals,” she explains.

The photographer built her portfolio by volunteering to take photos of homeless pets for local rescue organizations. Her photos were used in animal adoption ads and for fundraising.

The more photos she took, the more demand there was for them, and she created a rescue program that provides complimentary images of adoptable animals.

During her time of working with rescue animals, Schmitz discovered stock photography. Earning ongoing royalties simply by uploading her photos to an agency sounded like a perfect fit to make a living while continuing to save lives.

It took more than eight years of hard work, dedication and the encouragement of her husband to turn her love of photography into a full-time career, and she did it while making a difference.

“I have photographed thousands of rescue animals in the past 10-plus years; almost all of which have been adopted into their fur-ever homes,” Schmitz says.

Shifting Focus The animal lover recently shifted her focus to travel and wildlife photography. She has visited Africa three times where she captures the people, animals and landscapes with her camera.

Schmitz’s latest venture is a tag-team effort with her friend, wildlife painter April Howland. Together they co-founded Adventure Artists International. The mission of the organization is to provide creative spirits with unique art and philanthropic-centered travel experiences that inspire global impact through creativity, connection and conservation.

The group has a trip to Kenya in September 2020 to witness the great wildebeest and zebra migration, spend time with a Maasai tribe, and learn about community outreach projects through the Africa Foundation.

The duo will provide ongoing support after the trip for anyone who wants to use their artwork to support the communities and wildlife they met. Up next will be exploring options for additional trips to Yellowstone National Park and Costa Rica.

In the meantime, Schmitz mentors photographers in person and through online classes, and she will be exhibiting her artwork at the Art on the Wild Side exhibit at the Phoenix Zoo and Arizona Center for Nature Conservation. Her collection, titled In The Dust consists of images of endangered wildlife emerging from clouds of dust meant to symbolize and spotlight the efforts that are being made by conservation organizations to prevent these species from dying off and being left in the dust. It will be displayed from Sept. 15 to Jan. 15.

Boho Camper Vans offers thoughtful, handcrafted spaces for adventurists

David Sodemann and Brett Ellenson are the gurus behind the ultimate all-in-one vehicles available from Boho Camper Vans. The business partners convert commercial vehicles into camper vans for both the weekend explorer and the full-time van lifer.

The duo creates beautiful, fully functional living spaces available to buy or rent with components such as beds, running water, kitchenettes, outdoor showers, and cooking stations that run off solar energy and grid use.

“Giving someone an affordable option to live without a mortgage and with immense flexibility is what motivates me every day. I feel we’re on the cusp of an important movement, both socially and environmentally,” Ellenson says.

Sodemann and Ellenson were born on the same day in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and became friends once they found their way to Arizona despite their diverse backgrounds. Ellenson grew up working in machinery and fabrication and has always been a hands-on guy.

He moved to Phoenix to work in machinery sales, giving him the experience to run Boho’s shop. Sodemann has a degree in design from Arizona State University, and has since worked on the marketing side of many startups in Phoenix. He has built brands in a variety of industries and his penchant for design and hospitality has helped in the branding of Boho.

Both Sodemann and Ellenson are avid hikers and campers, so the idea of starting a business in this industry came naturally. In the age of rideshare platforms, Boho exists to focus on the destination rather than the journey.

“I’m inspired by the life-changing experiences Boho creates by disconnecting people from their daily routine and giving them a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Sodemann says.

The team even each other out, with Ellenson as the creative visionary. “[Ellenson is] Extremely detail-oriented and meticulous when it comes to building vans. He’s a true creative when it comes to new layouts and features. Give the man a drill and amazing things happen,” Sodemann says.

Sodemann, on the other hand, has the entrepreneurial spirit. “[Sodemann] loves working with people and enjoys engaging with renters and prospective clients looking to purchase. He has no shortage of business goals, some crazier than others, but they keep pushing the company forward. We feed off each other, it’s a blast,” Ellenson explains.

Local author Talia Renzo helps readers find healing through her writings

Talia Renzo lost her father when she was a teenager and was tasked with writing his memorial service. It was during that extremely tragic time in her life when she discovered her vocation for the written word.

“I will never forget the nervous knot I had in my belly before I went up on stage to honor my father,” she reminisces. “I took a step into the warmth of the spotlight and looked into a sea of hundreds of faces that wanted to hear what I had to say. I spoke true from my heart and felt [empowered]. I realized in that moment that I had a voice that needed to be heard.”

Now 22 and a published author, Renzo’s voice projects loud and clear in her chapter called Recovering the Grieving Heart, included in Life Coach — a collaborative, Amazon-exclusive book that helps readers navigate life’s most difficult issues. Her intimate, eight-page chapter depicts her grief and healing process surrounding her father’s death.

Renzo wrote her chapter for the community of grief victims and her 15-year-old self. In addition to losing a parent when she was a teen, Renzo was relentlessly bullied in high school.

“I wanted to write to this girl that lacked ambition, confidence and self-esteem. I wanted to tell her to stand taller in life because [her] story of grief at the time was not going to define who [she] was, but it was going to define [her] legacy in giving to others.”

Tackling topics of vulnerability that most people shy away from, Renzo is just scratching the surface of her career as an author. The Arizona native has two forthcoming books. The first is Kindness Crusader — another collaborative book that features stories of kindness from authors around the world being released at the end of this year. The second is her first solo book, slated to drop in 2020, that will give a more expansive overview on her grieving and healing journey.

Renzo is currently working on her college degree in creative writing. Apart from writing, other creative outlets of hers include cooking, doing makeup and listening to anything by Lady Gaga.

“I absolutely adore Lady Gaga and attribute a lot of my overcomings to the messages in her music.

Her song Marry the Night is about marrying all of your obstacles and becoming one with your destiny.” Renzo continues, “This song always resonates with me and my life.”

DRESSING WITH PURPOSE Jesse James Ferrell embraces mindfulness in his style and career

Jesse James Ferrell knows how to keep his personal brand comfortable without sacrificing style. The founder of Focus Four Me, a personalized meditation, goal setting and journal app, prefers well-fitting jeans and motivational statement T- shirts.

“With spirituality and mindfulness being such a huge part of my journey, I’ve definitely found myself gravitating toward more spiritually focused apparel,” he says.

Ferrell’s style is both eclectic and energetic. Inspired by Johnny Depp, his wardrobe showcases his confidence and whimsical nature thanks to brands such as Spiritual Gangster and John Varvatos.

The mental health advocate keeps an organized closet by implementing color coordination and evenly spaced hangers with plenty of room for his fashionable hat and boot collections.

Known for his variety of headwear, the hat lover is rarely spotted without his signature fedora.

“I have fond memories of buying my first brown Livity fedora while traveling to a yoga festival in Joshua Tree called Bhakti Fest,” he recalls.

What are your favorite colors and styles to wear? Since I have green eyes I lean to green as being my favorite color to wear. Then baby blue, teal, burgundy and some black. I prefer solid colors with some accents from stitching or buttons. I'm always drawn to nice accent stitching and creative buttons.

What is your No. 1 style tip? Wear quality socks and comfortable shoes that make a statement. I feel these things can make a huge impact on how you feel energetically throughout the day. Say no to baggy butt, high-waisted, pleated, and “Hammer time” pants!

Where do you like to shop? When I need something fast I go to Nordstrom. I tend to be influenced by Italian style and shop in Italy or Greece when possible. I’ve found almost my entire collection of boots in other cities, like Seattle and San Francisco.

SUNNY DISPOSITION Lizy Hoeffer brightens any room with her classic sense of style

Balancing family and a successful career in the mortgage industry is what Lizy Hoeffer does best. Luckily, her classic and sophisticated style lends itself to her daily routine.

The chic loan officer takes cues from Reese Witherspoon, Olivia Polermo and Victoria Beckham thanks to their passion for timeless fashion while juggling family and business with grace.

“I always stick to the classics rather than follow the latest fad. Classics are simple and will always be trendy,” Hoeffer says.

The mom of three has a sunny personality that matches her favorite color to wear: yellow. She’s not afraid of prints and can’t turn down a great polka dot motif from J.Crew, Kate Spade or Tory Burch.

“I am [also] very much a Nordstrom girl because they carry all of my favorite brands in one place. I also love Anthropologie.”

In the evening, Hoeffer counts on a bold red lip to take her look from day to night.

One thing you won’t find Hoeffer in?

Athleisure wear outside of the gym. She believes that simplicity is the key to great style and takes pride in her professional appearance.

What is your must-have item when it comes to style? My must-have item is my nude pumps. They are practical and make my legs look longer. They also go with everything and you will always see me in heels at work!

What is your most prized possession in your closet? My black Prada bag. It is the one item I told myself I would buy once I reached a certain level of achievement. The motto I live by is “Passion changes everything.”

I truly believe that as long as you are willing to work hard, be the best in your position, and come from a place of gratitude, you will be successful.

How does living in Arizona influence your wardrobe? Over the summer in Arizona, I wear more lightweight clothing and less layers. I am indoors most days during the week, so the heat doesn’t affect my wardrobe drastically.

The internationally recognized architect finds inspiration in the natural surroundings for his innovative designs

Wendell Burnette’s journey with architecture began at age 13 when he would visit his local library to read books about the topic. Since then, his love for the craft has taken him to some of the most picturesque destinations around the world.

“I'm always searching for the next project and the opportunity to craft the next experience, the next moment, the next memory that is in some way resonant across time,” he explains.

A Resume of Note The Tennessee native attributes his global success to hard work and passion – not a college degree. Self-taught and known for his eye-catching structures, Burnette has called Phoenix home for 39 years. During his time as an apprentice at Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture at Taliesin West, Burnette solidified his love for the desert while living in a 8-by-8 sheepherders canvas tent, drawing inspiration from the landscape that surrounded him.

The architect, who has projects throughout the world that resonate with their natural surroundings, works in a studio located on Central Avenue that he designed to reflect the community he lives and works in. Burnette’s uptown workspace is an impressive adaptive reuse of a 1950’s uptown furniture store, with walls that are lined with blueprints, awards, glossy photos of completed projects, and more than 200 publications that feature the artist’s work.

The building also houses For The People and Kream Coffee.

After being a student himself once upon a time – Burnette completed an 11-year association with the studio of Will Bruder culminating in a six-year design collaboration on the Phoenix Central Library – he then shifted from student to teacher as a Professor of Practice at The Design School at Arizona State University. He continues to lecture internationally and hosts community events at his studio for the public to collaborate and learn about the future of Valley architecture, often joined by guest speakers.

In 2009, he received the Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, which recognizes an American architect whose work is characterized by a strong personal direction. This award was accompanied by an exhibition at the Academy in

the same year. Most recently, his first fulllength monograph titled Dialogues in Space was released.

Engaging Creations The prominent architect strives to create spaces that engage people and his eye for detail infuses every corner of his designs.

His projects include adaptive reuse spaces, historic remodels, residential remodels, public work, and luxury resorts. “[My design philosophy is] grounded in listening and distilling the essence of a project to create highly specific architecture that is at once functional and poetic,” Burnette says.

Some of his notable Arizona-based projects include St. Francis restaurant, SOI 4 Bangkok Eatery, the Palo Verde Library and Maryvale Community Center.

“The urban design approach of the Maryvale Community Center first brokered key parking variances to preserve the large ball field and other recreational amenities, insuring Maryvale Park would remain the ‘green heart’ of this 54-year-old community,” he explains.

In the middle of the southern Utah desert lies Burnette’s “dream project” – Amangiri, which he designed in collaboration with fellow established architects, Marwan Al-Sayed and Rick Joy. The luxury resort is a celebrity destination for guests including Brad Pitt and Kanye West thanks to its remote location, remarkable landscape and dramatic design set in the midst of awe-inspiring cliffs and dramatic rock formations.

The idea evolved from many late night conversations between Burnette and his colleagues at the site and resulted in a property

where the guest rooms provide a solitary experience centered around a piazza, in this case a giant rock formation smack dab in the middle of the swimming pool. Burnette incorporated local sand, aggregates, and fly ash to create the bold yet responsive resort that both honors and celebrates the magic and mystery of the area.

“The big idea is that Amangiri is conceived as a ruin that is akin to the landscape,” he says. “It’s always been about doing work that is resonant about people, program, and place.”

Currently, Burnette is designing the new Christopher’s at the Wrigley Mansion for chef Christopher Gross. The faceted glass garden pavilion will feature 30 seats, each with a stunning view of the Valley.

“Elegant dark finishes will allow the food, who you are with, the Wrigley Mansion and its panoramic view to be the stars,” he explains.

Soon Burnette will travel to Sardinia to develop a large parcel of land complete with a river and estuary into a sustainable farm, restaurant, and upscale accommodations while restoring a 300-year-old villa on site, which will serve as the DNA for the project.

For Burnette, one of the biggest rewards is knowing his designs will contribute to people’s lives in a positive way.

“From a personal residence to a luxury resort, we always look at local traditions and culture,” he says. “We slow down and look at what exists in the area and do work that makes sense so you feel the connection to the space.”

Arizona Good Food Expo, formerly known as Arizona Farmer + Chef Connection, caters to culinary professionals and wholesale buyers – as well as those with an interest in or connection to the local food industry – looking to source more local ingredients and products. The expo welcomes more than 75 Arizona purveyors into a marketplace setting at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, where attendees will learn more about local sourcing and foster relationships with Valley-based suppliers.

Local First Arizona, a nonprofit that celebrates independent, locally owned businesses, has hosted the event for 10 years. And throughout the years, chefs weren’t the only ones in attendance.

Grocery purchasers, culinary students and food distributors were on the roster, too. In

an effort to incorporate all of the attendees, and to usher in the event’s 10th year, Local First Arizona rebranded the event.

“Changing the name to Arizona Good Food Expo better reflects the mission behind the event – to showcase Arizona’s best local food and build lasting relationships between food producers and wholesale buyers – but is more inclusive of the state’s broad range of food buyers who aren’t necessarily chefs,” says Emily Bell, Good Food programs manager at Local First Arizona Foundation.

So, what exactly can you expect from the 10th annual Arizona Good Food Expo?

Besides meeting face to face with farmers, food artisans and specialty beverage producers, attendees will enjoy seasonal samples, interactive displays and wholesale

discounts. After the expo, Charleen Badman, a recent James Beard Award winner and co-owner of Scottsdale’s FnB restaurant, will impart her food wisdom as the featured speaker during a reception at the resort’s Different Pointe of View restaurant. There, attendees will nosh on menu items crafted by executive chef Anthony DeMuro that utilize ingredients from this year’s vendors.

Beyond eating delicious foods, the industry-focused event is built upon lasting connections that help local businesses thrive.

“Sourcing Arizona's homegrown foods is essential to building a healthier Arizona, and the relationships made at the expo will leverage our agricultural bounty for the benefit of all,” says Kimber Lanning, founder of Local First Arizona and Local First Arizona Foundation.

Kia just introduced the all-new Telluride, a three-row midsize SUV with seating for up to eight people. It is the largest Kia ever offered, much larger than the hugely popular Sorento.

The newcomer is 8 inches longer and 4 inches wider, with a wheelbase that stretches nearly 5 inches farther.

The Telluride joins the market at a time when the public is begging for more SUV choices, especially those with room for eight. The Telluride is a few inches bigger than the Honda Pilot and the new Toyota Highlander, creeping up on the size of a Chevy Tahoe.

Austria brings to mind visions of Mozart, Alpine villages, imperial palaces, and the opera. The Central European country has all of that and so much more to offer visitors. Its capital city of Vienna – Wien in German – sits almost exactly at the center of Europe.

Perched along the Danube River and filled with exquisite architecture, history and expansive green parks, it is the ideal place to begin exploring Austria.

Vienna is a magical city, with architecture from the imperial time of the Habsburgs and traditional coffeehouses on every corner, both offset by the vibrancy of a modern city. The juxtaposition of old and new is everywhere. When you arrive, stop by the Tourist Information Office at the Main Station or the airport to pick up the Vienna City Card (www.viennacitycard.at), which gives you free travel on public transportation for up to 72 hours as well as discounts at various museums.

One of the best ways to see Vienna is to book a tour with a certified tour guide (www.wien.info). There’s more to do than you can experience in a single visit, so this is a great opportunity to see the highlights before exploring on your own. Several tours are offered by the city, and it is also popular to take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the old city center – a UNESCO World Heritage Centre – with the guides offering fun commentary during the ride.

Exploring Classical Vienna Vienna’s Ringstrasse is a boulevard running more than 3 miles through the city’s center. A walk or drive around the Ringstrasse gives you a chance to see the Vienna State Opera, the Austrian Parliament Building, the Imperial Palace, the City Hall and more.

One of the best ways to get a glimpse of everything along the Ringstrasse is to hop on the Vienna Ring Tram. The yellow tram follows the famed boulevard and takes about 25 minutes. Narration is available in English, and the ride is free with a Vienna City Card.

With the tallest tower reaching nearly 450 feet, one of the most visible landmarks in Vienna is St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Built in the 12th century, visitors can tour inside the magnificent Gothic cathedral and even climb the 343 steps to the top of the tower.

Another destination of near-overwhelming size is The Hofburg, the former imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty and now the residence and offices for Austria’s president. You can tour the Imperial Apartments, wander the gardens, and visit the Austrian National Library – Europe’s largest Baroque library – in one wing.

You don’t want to miss the MuseumsQuartier, or MQ, near the Imperial Palace. This complex includes the Leopold Museum, Kunsthalle Wien and the MUMOK – a museum of modern and contemporary art. These museums creatively show the old and new sides of Vienna. For some fuel while you’re in MQ, stop by Glacis Beisl and order a traditional schnitzel with beer.

While the Habsburgs called Hofburg home, they spent their summers at Schonbrunn Palace, now easily accessible by tram (www.schoenbrunn.at). This magnificent Baroque estate has more than 1,400 rooms, many of which you can tour. Make sure to allow time to explore the beautiful, groomed gardens outside the palace.

Luxury Shopping Vienna offers bountiful shopping, especially in the area around Kohlmarkt, which is home to both Viennese luxury brands and international shops. Jewelry shops are especially popular, and you will see all that glitters as you amble along the pedestrian zone.

Step into the marble and wood entrance of high-end jewelry store Schullin on Kohlmarkt to take a peek at some luxurious accessories.

The Goldenes Quartier (www.goldenesquartier.com) is Old Vienna’s newest luxury shopping area. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Armani and Prada are just a few of the shops you can find here.

Famed Coffee Vienna’s coffeehouses have been an institution since the 19th century. Once the meeting place for artists, writers and intellects, they remain the hot spots in town to relax and sip coffee. While the most famous include Cafe Central and Cafe Sperl, it can often be impossible to get a seat. You might want to try one of the smaller coffeehouses so you can soak up the atmosphere. For a coffee with cream similar to what you have in the U.S., order a grosser brauner.

For something typically Viennese, try the melange with foamed milk or an einspanner with whipped cream and sugar icing.

Where to Stay For a luxury hotel option, try Hotel Altstadt, an easy walk to both MQ and Ringstrasse (www.altstadt.at). BERRIES AND CREAM Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour’s Tickled Pink tickles all the senses

Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour recently released its highly anticipated sixth annual Book o’ Cocktails. The 18-page menu and commemorative book features 60 different cocktails from the brain trust at the world-renowned bar.

“Recent years’ concepts have tended toward fairy tale-inspired cocktails – some inspired by heroes, some by darker characters,” says founder Ross Simon.

This year, the menu is all about going big…as in the Big Top. “Our new offering is inspired by the circus as well as carnival folk. It is divided into four main sections: divergent, cocktails that push boundaries; play it safe, tried-andtrue classics; to the point, spirit forward options; and refreshing, so a bit of fruit, a bit of zest and complete approachability,” Simon explains.

One cocktail clearly made with summer in mind is Tickled Pink ($12).

“It starts by adding Zubrowka Bison Grass Polish Vodka, which is sourced from Bialowieza forest in Poland and boasts an herbaceous aroma with hints of vanilla, to a pilsner glass with crushed artisan ice,” says Simon.

Next, a three-berry puree made from strawberries, raspberries and blackberries and French fruit-infused liqueurs are stirred into the glass.

“The liqueurs supercharge the fruit flavors without adding too much sweetness,” says Simon, who completes the cocktail with cream to add a rich lushness to the texture as a top layer of fresh ice.

It’s garnished with a strawberry and mint as well as a skewer of blackberries and raspberries that have been sprayed with edible silver paint for an added wow factor.

Light yet creamy, Tickled Pink almost tastes more like adult ice cream than an adult beverage.

Did you always intend on becoming a chef?

I actually started golfing and spent most of my childhood dreaming of going pro. Come high school, I excelled at math and science, so I started looking into architecture as my career path.

What changed?

Senior year I took a class that asked us to research our passions, and education or training required to follow those passions. I always cooked with my stepmother, and a family friend was a retired chef, so I started asking them questions. That led me to researching – and then visiting – the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in 2001. I walked in and never wanted to leave.

Tell us about your journey to Doughbird.

My first big break was at then-hotspot Thaifoon in Scottsdale in 2002. I’ve also served as a chef at Roy’s, Different Pointe of View and Heirloom (now closed). I joined Fox Restaurant Concepts in 2010. Over the past near-decade, I’ve worked as the executive chef at Arrogant Butcher, Modern Steak and North Italia in Kierland. I also worked as the director of culinary services for True Food Kitchen.

What is your favorite thing to cook, at Doughbird or otherwise?

I love dough! And I am not just saying that given the restaurant’s name. From stretching pizza dough to pressing agnolotti dough to shaping ravioli and cutting dough, I have a legitimate love affair with dough.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

For sure, it would be sandwiches, especially veggie-stuffed ones with eggplant and cucumbers and loads of greens. I also love Italian grinder sandwiches and turkey melts.

Any foods you don’t like?

Be them raw or cooked, I hate turnips. Yuck!

What would readers be surprised to know about you?

I love singing, so much so I serenaded my wife with a live performance at our wedding.

When conjuring up notions of Thai street food your initial thought might be pad Thai, and while it is on the menu there is so much more to explore. Glai Baan’s larb salad is a solid introductory dish made up of minced pork, shallots and mint with a dynamic lime dressing. HASH, HASH BABY! Hash Kitchen opens in Arcadia

Bloody mary bar? Check. Mimosa flights?

Check. Cereal shooters? Check.

At Hash Kitchen, creativity is on the menu along with all of your breakfast and brunch favorites.

The 3,900-square-foot eatery that boasts the largest build-your-own bloody mary bar in Arizona and offers cocktail flights inspired by and featuring actual cereals opened earlier this summer on the corner of 44th Street and Indian School to much fanfare. While the fourth location in Arizona, the opening marked the first in the uptown area.

The brainchild of chef Joey Maggiore and the family-owned Maggiore Group – the founders of Tomaso’s, Tommy V’s, Tomaso’s When in Rome, The Sicilian Butcher and the Sicilian Baker – Hash Kitchen is housed in its own stand-alone brick building and screams “party” from the moment one walks in.

“Our design is modern and airy with lots of light,” Maggiore says. “Our whitewashed walls have quirky brunch-themed sayings throughout to encourage photos and selfies. We also have a similarly photo-friendly wall made entirely of greenery, which is a signature in all of our Hash locations.”

Blue wraparound booths dot the seating area, which has space for more than 100, and there is a large DJ booth in one corner of the restaurant, giving it a bit of a club vibe.

“We bring in rotating guest DJs every weekend. They play everything from house music to mashups to country. There is something for everyone,” Maggiore says.

The menu, crafted by Maggiore, himself features a variety of hash entree options, decadent French toast, frittatas, eggs Benedict with beer cheese-infused hollandaise, waffles, several types of pancakes and even cannoli doughnuts. There is also a kid’s menu and gluten-free options available.

Like the food menu, the bar program is similarly a combination of tradition, modern interpretations and out-of-the-box options.

“Our brunch cocktail program is spearheaded by cocktail master Sheldon Wiley, who recently earned a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Negroni,” Maggiore says. “He’s dreamt up everything from slushies with spiced rum presented in disco balls and topped with hand-spun cotton candy to mimosas with strawberry boba to coffee cocktails to make even the most discerning java aficionado smile.”

As noted prior, the bloody mary bar is truly outrageous.

“Guests are able to choose their own house-infused vodka flavors, salt rims, and made-from-scratch bloody mary mixes such as classic and habanero. Then, we have more than 60 toppings that run the gamut from beer jerky, bacon and pickles to fried ravioli,” Maggiore explains.

And then there are the cereal cocktails.

Available on their own or in a flight of shooters, these adult takes on nostalgic children’s cereals are available in four flavors.

Hash Kitchen is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
