Some say that the city gets empty in the summer months but this season is pretty busy and it seems like Phoenix isn’t the ghost town it once was in triple-digits.

COMING FULL CIRCLE A tragedy in Ellen Schilling’s life inspired her to give hope to others

After relocating to Arizona from Maine two years ago, Ellen Schilling made some major adjustments. Her husband was transferred here to the Valley and her brother, John Esty had recently passed from his battle with cancer. What followed was a series of experiences that resulted in a new career for Schilling and the

creation of Unveil Your Legacy, her company that gives back to the cancer community through The Joy Bus. After seeing his dream job in the Valley posted online, Schilling’s husband applied for it, but she hadn’t given it much thought. While that was happening, her brother received a cancer diagnosis.

“He was my hero,” says Schilling of her brother. “He was a businessman in New York City in the arts and owned a custom frame shop in Greenwich Village.”

Schilling was soon stunned to learn her husband landed the job in Arizona and they would be moving. The devoted sister would spend her time flying back-and-forth to New York as she was needed to care for her brother. She flew from Phoenix to New York from July to November 2016.

“My brother was being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and his husband put him on the 19th floor – the same floor where the prince of Saudi Arabia was,” Schilling recalls. “It was the most amazing experience to be in the transition process with him because everything was ideal. It was a beautiful time of learning for all of us.”

One of her fondest memories was having a group picnic outside of Sloan Kettering and her brother holding his face peacefully toward the sun. It was the last time he was outside and Esty passed November 14, 2016.

“When I returned to Phoenix, I thought, ‘I need to create some kind of legacy for my brother,’” Schilling explains.

She put much thought into what it meant to create a legacy.

She read many books about transitioning, life after death, and near-death experiences.

“I read a memoir by Anita Moorjani called Dying to be Me and it was incredible,” Schilling recalls. “I looked her up online and it turns out she was appearing here at the International Women’s Summit.”

Schilling started emailing Moorjani’s people and she was invited to attend the event as a guest of Moorjani’s. During the event, there was a raffle by the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts for a scholarship to become a life coach. Schilling thinks that her brother provided a little heavenly shove from above in making sure she won that scholarship.

She then attended night school, became a life coach and began orchestrating workshops on how to reveal one’s own greatness and finding a legacy before the end of life.

“In creating a legacy for my brother, I’ve also created a legacy for me,” she says.

Schilling creates a touchstone for her workshop participants with a trigger word that possesses deep meaning. This was the idea behind Unveil Your Legacy.

In addition to life coaching through Unveil Your Legacy, Schilling also makes custom bracelets. Each bracelet identifies someone’s unique legacy and she hand forges each letter into the circle design. The piece is designed with the intention to remind people to live their greatness every day.

“The trigger word on these pieces ranges from one end of the spectrum to the other. I have some people using Gaelic words, some people using a word for something they want to be, but it really varies,” Schilling explains. “Some people need coaching and some people don’t. But, what I love to hear are the stories behind the word they choose.”

Ten percent of proceeds from the circular bracelet with a message go to The Joy Bus, a Valley service that delivers nutritious food to those that are homebound and living with cancer.

Schilling’s brother was friends with someone at God’s Love We Deliver, a nonprofit organization that offers a similar service in New York.

“It’s like a bigger version of The Joy Bus,” Schilling says.

“God’s Love We Deliver offered to have my brother’s memorial there on the top floor and it was beautiful.”

Schilling learned of The Joy Bus through social media and visited The Joy Bus Diner in North Phoenix to have breakfast.

“I said, ‘I have to be part of this,’” she recalls. “So, I started volunteering – pouring coffee and filling syrup bottles. I think The Joy Bus founder Jennifer Caraway is a complete rock star.”

Schilling is also on the fundraising committee. In a full circle twist, The Joy Bus became involved with the Food is Medicine Coalition, which is connected to God’s Food We Deliver in New York.

“I am completely a messenger in all of this,” she finishes. “I am a conduit for other people’s goodness. This is about people bringing out their own goodness, starting today and not waiting for it.”

Allison Murray invites her clients to create uniquely unforgettable events

Decaffeinated Design is a business focused just the way owner Allison Murray likes. Her customized invitation and event announcements reflect an event as seen through her design lens.

Murray always loved doodling and drawing, but didn’t have schooling in design. After working in corporate sales for seven years, she left her career with no idea where she might work.

“I started doing graphic design and practicing,” Murray says. “I became obsessed with it.”

When a former co-worker asked her to create an invitation, her creative lightbulb was illuminated and she began designing invitations as her full-time business.

“I have some social anxiety and I’d go to events and be really nervous, and it prevented me from doing a lot,” she explains. “I was also a coffee addict.”

After reading that coffee can cause anxiety, she gave it up, ultimately naming her business Decaffeinated Design to encourage her creative direction.

“As much fun as parties and events are, they can be stressful. I want to alleviate stress, at least in invitation form,” she says.

Decaffeinated Design recently came upon good press. Murray created whimsical invitations for a royal wedding watch party and the design was showcased in her Etsy shop. The design was picked up by Good Housekeeping, People and Town & Country.

“I was freaking out about being in Good Housekeeping, and my royal wedding invitation was being featured on People.com that whole time,” Murray says. “Then The Today Show contacted me and my invitation was on that show!”

She’s definitely seen an uptick in her business, but she loves working closely with her clients to create one-of-a-kind invitations.

During an initial meeting, Murray asks many questions and gets to know her client, takes a couple of days to think about everything, sketches and then goes to her computer.

“My goal is to get their personality that I got from their consultation and convey that into an invitation that also fits the event they’re throwing,” she says.

Jewelry designer and silversmith Amber Reed is in her element

Creating jewelry with natural materials has been a passion for jewelry designer Amber Reed for the past six years. In her business By Amber Reed, her earthy jewelry incorporates shells, coral, minerals and stones in a naturally inspired way.

“A lot of this stems from when I was a little girl and I would always collect stones,” Reed says. “The older I got, I the more I became interested in gemstones and collecting minerals. I was literally in a beach or craft store twice a week since I was a little kid.”

Her niche skill in silversmithing was honed here in Phoenix.

“I have always wanted to work with metal,” Reed explains. “When I went to school in Michigan, they didn’t have a silversmithing program at the college I attended. I moved here and took classes at Phoenix Center for the Arts.”

Creating from scratch interested Reed from the start.

“Instead of buying pieces and putting them together, I wanted to make something from its raw form,” Reed says. “I chose jewelry design because there are so many facets to it.”

Some of Reed’s favorite work is designing custom pieces for her clients. She has produced jewelry for weddings and recreated pieces from family heirlooms that are maybe out-of-date.

Reed’s choice of design materials has meaning to it, also.

“Since we are always in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, anything we can do to connect ourselves to nature is really important,” she says. “I use a lot of natural gemstones that are mined in this area, too” When she uses gemstones that need to be cut, she has that work done locally. The sterling silver she uses in her jewelry design is recycled, further reducing impact on the environment.

Her natural approach to creating jewelry also spills over into her work as a boutique manager and art coordinator at Urban Yoga in Downtown Phoenix. Darryl Reynolds Sr. combines his love of Philadelphia and Phoenix for a perfectly balanced style

Well-coiffed hair is essential for any great sense of style and Darryl Reynolds Sr., hair stylist and business owner, knows a thing or two about putting together a well-fitting ensemble finished off with the perfect haircut. With an affinity for pinstripes and enhancing personal styles, there’s no denying the preppy-meets-urban owner of Ellsworth Street Social Club is at the top of the style and grooming game in the Valley.

When he’s not teaching advanced techniques or mentoring graduates at Paul Mitchell The School Phoenix, you can find the trendy stylist dressing up his wardrobe with custom J.Hilburn shirts and vintage T-shirts from classic American designers like Ralph Lauren and Hugo Boss. For Reynolds, comfort is equally important as style.

“You will always perform better when your clothes are hip and comfortable,” he says.

Combining loud and pastel colors inspired by Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the Philadelphia native embraces the desert heat and stocks his closet with lightweight sweaters and a shoe collection that would make Kanye West jealous.

How does your style influence your career? There has always been a need to express myself freely. Dealing with hair gives me a fresh canvas each and every time.

How did you start your business? I started cutting hair on my porch on Ellsworth Street in Philadelphia when I was 12 years old. Through education and experience I was able to come up with the concept for Ellsworth Street Social Club.

How has your style changed since moving here from Philly? I don’t wear rugby or gortex. I’ve had to get rid of all my baggy jeans.

My overall dress has become more causal, more fitted. The orange hues from the mountains [here] make the perfect canvas for a neon tee on a Saturday afternoon or a seersucker for Sunday brunch (at Wrigley Mansion).

ECLECTIC IN THE CITY Katherine Pappas’ unique accessories add a fun flair to every outfit

Katherine Pappas describes her style as a mix of glamorous and boho. She’s dressed that way since she was a kid when others would call her Punky Brewster, an 80s child TV star with whimsical fashion sense.

Though her looks tend to be eclectic, Pappas also likes high fashion and stilettos, a la Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. As director of workforce strategy at Pipeline Arizona, Pappas manages community stakeholder groups and aligns marketplace demands to ensure technology connects people and jobs.

“I’m in front of groups that include the mayor, governor or CEOs,” says Pappas.

“For work, I like some classic brands like Tahari or high-end brands like Dior.”

No matter the occasion, she turns to her unique collection of accessories to put a personalized touch on each ensemble.

“Nothing ever really goes out of fashion,” Pappas explains. “In college, I started exploring fashion and going to vintage stores. I bought a slew of belts, shelves of hats and tons of scarves. I’ve been collecting for years and everything has different styles and periods to them.”

If someone were to peek into your closet, what brands would they find?

I have a lot of Zara in my closet. That brand fits my body well and it’s unique. I also love clothing from Free People and Lululemon, and I’ll combine those brands together. I wear yoga clothes as part of my staple wardrobe.

Is there a signature element in your personal style? I mix metals. For decades, and before it became cool, I’ve worn rose gold.

That’s been one of my signature elements.

Rose gold and copper are always on my person and in my home.

What accessories do you typically incorporate into your daily looks? I go a little crazy with bracelets. Right now, I’m at a work conference and I’m only wearing five bracelets. My friends will call me Liberace. The only time I don’t “do Liberace” is if I’m going to workout or practicing yoga.

Money talk isn’t fun talk. There are so many other things people would rather strike up a conversation about than money.

That’s because as soon as you put numbers out in the airwaves, ego and judgement tend to follow. Some even “keep up with the Joneses” as a means to safeguard themselves, economically and socially, from ridicule. To make a long story short, money is stressful. Daphne Munro, one of the Valley’s most frugal (and proud of it!) shoppers, wanted to change that.

“I was lucky that I had parents who were always mindful of money and taught my brother and I how to live within our means and use our money to make money,” she reflects. “Not everyone has that history, so I try to share what I know and people can take what works for them and leave the rest.”

For 12 years, Munro appeared on the screens of Valley residents with her popular ABC15 segment, The Smart Shopper. She offered financial tips, life hacks and DIYs that didn’t break the bank. Her soft-spoken tone combined with her thrill for finding smokin’ hot deals made money talk, believe it or not, fun talk.

“I love to share ideas and things that work for me. It doesn’t mean it will work for everyone, but I am still going to share as long as people are interested in engaging with me.” Munro adds, “I am grateful that folks enjoy either watching or listening to the things I am passionate about.”

Camera-Ready Before The Smart Shopper, Munro owned a computer hardware store called Computers Exclusively in the early 1900s. The store began as a hobby, but transitioned into a fulltime gig as a means to support her family.

In effort to get her business more exposure, she and a friend who worked for PBS taped a segment on how computers could make life easier within the store. Munro took her tape to Channel 3, hoping to earn her business some airtime on Good Morning Arizona. She succeeded in this, plus some.

“I did regular technology segments for them, which were well-received and my business grew, so it turned out to be a true win-win scenario. Unbeknownst to me, that was the start of my career on local TV,” she recalls.

Channel 3 KTVK liked her tech-savvy segments so much so that they offered

Munro a contracting job to be a regular on Good Morning Arizona. She sold Computers Exclusively and became known as the Valley’s “Data Diva.”

This Data Diva had always been a smart shopper, though. Ever since she can remember, Munro was always the one turning to clearance racks, clipping coupons and, well, shopping smart. When she heard about ABC15’s new consumer segment dedicated to this topic matter, she jumped at the chance.

“The full concept had not yet been fully developed; however, they did not want a traditional reporter and instead hoped to find someone with an energetic personality who could speak credibly to this topic,” she explains. “Little did they know that's right up my alley — talking for a living and helping people to save money!”

After auditioning for the position, ABC15 knew that Munro’s effervescent yet relatable approach, in addition to her background as a business owner, would win over the hearts of Phoenicians. In September 2004, her new on-air identity was born as she opened and closed her first segment with…”I’m Daphne Munro, yoooooour Smart Shopper.”

Munro and her dream team of producers (Quita Jackson and Brooks Blanton) and photographer (Filip Kaspa) were given the creative freedom to build the brand from the ground up. Together, they created too many segments to count, including “Deals of the Day,” “How-to’s” and “Let Daphne Try It.”

“Because the four of us really were smart shoppers, we simply shared all the things from our lives that would benefit others,” Munro says.

For more than a decade, Munro wrote, produced, filmed and edited her own unique content from which the Arizona community benefited. Over the course of those years, the local TV audience dwindled with the emergence of other social mediums. Munro recognized that the digital world was calling and decided to pick up the phone. She bid her final on-air adieu in June 2016.

“There were so many things [I enjoyed about being a part of the ABC15 family]. I enjoyed the people in our community most. The energy of engaging live was collaborative, inspiring and a ton of fun,” she explains.

Just Daphne Although she is no longer a part of the ABC15 family, Munro considers the Arizona community her true family. After all, the Valley is her home. In order to better serve her frugal following, she decided to turn her on-air identity to an online presence. Today, she is “Just Daphne.”

“The good news was that showing people how to save money and simplify their lives could easily be done on social media. Thus, I began sharing stories, tips, hacks and ideas on my blog and my social sites (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram),” she says.

The beauty of being online is that Munro gets 100 percent total control of her brand. No one day looks like the last – especially since October 2017 when she became a flight attendant in order to see the world while adhering to her thrifty M.O. As an empty nester, she enjoys the freedom and flexibility that her schedule with both of her passions permit. However, she is adamant about seeing three core things through every day: post information for her followers, research money saving ideas and go running.

“I’ve always been a self-motivated person so I get my work done no matter what challenges arise,” she explains. “I travel a ton now and since I can blog, research, and run wherever I am in the world, I can still engage with my followers.”

According to the Valley’s smartest shopper, some of the best places to score a good deal include Final Clearance Outlet Store for clothes for the entire family, WinCo Foods for their bulk food section and Costco for a 3-pound rotisserie chicken that’ll set you back only $5. When it comes to splurging, she only doles out extra dough if quality is in the equation.

“I splurge on workout clothes and running shoes,” she admits. “Some brands have proven their value, so spending money on items that hold up over time is important even if the cost is higher than comparative brands. Finally, I spend money on eating healthy because organic, seasonal foods are essential.”

Munro will always be the Valley’s “Smart Shopper,” but branching out online gave her the ability to showcase her other passions and interests, like cooking. She even shares cheap (without compromising deliciousness) recipes on her blog, including a barbecue pork meal that feeds the entire family for $4.25. That’s cheaper than a cup of coffee.

“I hope my social platforms give people permission not to judge their money mistakes, but rather acknowledge them and genuinely learn a new approach,” she says.

“Whether they engage in dialogue about it or simply watch from afar, the goal is to provide information on how to make life simpler, a little bit better and much more affordable all while having a good laugh.”

Last year, Arizona Opera hosted the inaugural summer Opera and Gelato Film Festival. The event, held at Arizona Opera’s building in Downtown Phoenix, gave residents a cool haven away from the scorching heat. Attendees were invited to indulge in the culture of the opera shows as well as enjoy a helping of gelato.

Back for its second year after rave reviews, this year’s Opera and Gelato Film Festival kicked off June 17 with the presentation of Die Walküre, the second installment of Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle.

Theater. Direct from San Francisco Opera, this hour-long adaptation of the classic fairytale is perfect for first-time opera goers.

The family, kid-friendly presentation is a story of “happily ever after,” beginning in the run-down castle of Don Magnifico, while his daughters Clorinda and Tisbe are in the middle of one of an argument. Their stepsister Angelina, called Cinderella, serves as the family maid. Attendees will follow along during this classic story as Cinderella finds her prince. Pre-show activities will be presented in part by the Children’s Museum of Phoenix and begin at 1 p.m., and the film screening will begin at 2 p.m.

The final screening of the event takes

place August 19 with Puccini’s classic opera La bohème. Set in the Romantic world of Paris, La bohème tells the tale of young friends as they learn about life, death and love. In addition to the almost-three-hour show, Paste PHX will be on site to reinforce the artistic spirit of La bohème with a fun afternoon of collage activities.

Both of the upcoming shows are free to attend, but tickets must be reserved online in advance. Both screenings are expected to sell out so it is suggested that attendees only reserve the number of seats they will be able to fill. BITTER & TWISTED’S I DON’T CARROT ALL After one taste, oh yes you will

Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour recently released its new mixology program (and accompanying book) featuring 32 pages of often-cheeky and always inspired craft cocktail creations.

“While the new menu isn’t directly based on any one particular villain, it is a clearly darker, more twisted rendition than last year’s concept, which was all fairy tale focused,” says Ross Simon, Bitter & Twisted founder, noting there are more than 60 cocktails in total in the book. “We wanted to reflect this idea in the cocktails by using mischievous ingredients and dreaming up combinations that you might not expect together.”

An early favorite both for its distinctive color and creative combination of flavors is the I Don’t Carrot All ($12), which is inspired by the Lemongrass Collins, a citrusy cocktail made popular in London, England.

“The base spirit is Zubrówka [Bison Grass] Vodka, which has grassy tones coming through on the nose, and great creamy and vanilla notes on the palate,” Simon explains.

The vodka is combined with carrot and lime juices, ginger syrup and Coco Reál, which is a blend of cane, coconut meat and coconut milk in a spindle mixer (adding the perfect coconut cream flavor). The mixture is blended and then poured into a Catalina glass filled with crushed ice.

“The garnish is as playful to the eye as the cocktail is to the palate as we shave carrots and shape them into a flower with mint sprigs acting as the leaves,” Simon says.

The result is an herbaceous yet semisweet drink with a ginger pop, lime zing and surprisingly subtle finish thanks to the carrot.

The bright and light cocktail fits right in with the season.

After getting his start with St. Francis in 2011, Josh Duncan is back – this time as executive chef of the modern, neighborhood haunt focused on all things local, fresh and flavor-forward.

What inspired you to become a chef?

I remember being a young kid in Phoenix (I’m a native and a Sandra Day O’Connor High grad, by the way) walking through the grocery store produce section realizing I had no idea where any of it actually came from. I wanted to spend my life finding out.

But, you went to college for law?

I studied criminology at Arizona State University thinking I would go into law, make my fortune and then live my dream of buying a restaurant.

But, once I started interning for attorneys, I realized that it was not my path. Thankfully, I worked at a small restaurant (now shuttered) at night to fuel my passion, exchanging labor for the chef’s time and teachings.

How did you come to work at St. Francis the first time around?

St. Francis was my favorite restaurant. In 2011, I applied for a prep cook position with thenowner Aaron Chamberlin. He would mentor me to a sous chef, eventually encouraging me to spread my wings and move to San Francisco.

Tell us about your San Francisco Experience: I moved in 2013, and was living out of my truck before scoring some amazing gigs with Michelin-starred, award-winning restaurants.

I would also travel the entire Western United States working in kitchens and living in my truck or camping while soaking up all the food education I could.

What brought you back to Arizona – and St. Francis?

I visited Phoenix in 2015 for a cousin’s wedding and fell in love with my now-wife that night. I worked for some amazing local spots and even opened my own high-end catering company – Arizona Provisions – upon my return, and was in the process of purchasing St. Francis earlier before I got an opportunity to partner with a similarly interested group and come back as executive chef in March.

A COWORKING COMMUNITY The Grid.Works brings the shared office experience to Uptown

Cowork spaces, or shared workspaces, are a growing trend, providing flexibility and connection to entrepreneurs, freelancers, remote workers, and startup companies.

Larger companies are giving their employees specific “work from home” days, and smaller companies are forgoing renting, or buying, office space and instead asking employees to fend for themselves.

Those looking for an alternative to the solitude of working from home or the distractions of working from a coffee shop are flocking to the collaborative environment of cowork spaces. In big cities, these cowork spaces are popping up everywhere.

The Grid.Works opened in June as Uptown’s first cowork space. The modern 8,000-square-foot space is owned by John Kobierowski, founder of The Grid.Works cowork space and managing partner of ABI Multifamily.

“I had been eyeing a building at 7th Street north of Camelback for a while, with the idea of a cowork space in mind,” Kobierowski explains. “So, when we found

ourselves looking for a new office space, I knew it would be the perfect location for ABI Multifamily on the second floor, and a new, modern, flexible cowork space on the first floor.”

Kobierowski enlisted Corgan architecture and design firm to renovate the building for his new project in January of this year. Completed in May, the space has a modern, industrial feel with exposed ductwork, sandblasted brick walls and an open concept design featuring glass walled offices and conference rooms. Local artists and metal fabricators were brought in to create unique elements including a rebar staircase, steam punk kitchen and meeting tables.

The space features smart technology throughout, embracing IoT elements like lighting that adjusts based on usage, a custom member’s app (available on Apple and Android), lockers for members’ storage and advanced WiFi systems.

“We’ve created a place that allows like-minded, smaller groups and companies to work in a fun, focused and collaborative environment,” Kobierowski says. “I’m really looking forward to building a creative community in a very cool space.”

The Grid.Works memberships range from $180 to $1,200. Options include private offices, reserved and open workstations, and “hotseats” at collaborative tables.

Memberships include free high-speed internet, printing and scanning, and use of the open kitchen (including unlimited coffee).

Members also have the option to use five themed conference rooms, a fully equipped audio and video production studio, a 1,600-square-foot multipurpose room/yoga space that accommodates over 50 people and features glass rollup garage doors, offering a semi-private indoor/outdoor event space.
