Here’s what some of our patients who have declared their Independence from Symptoms of Hormone Deficiency are saying: SottoPelle has really changed my life. I have so much more physical energy and mental clarity and don’t even have a headache anymore. The difference in just a few months has been truly amazing and I feel so much better every day.

I am 80 years old, struggling with fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, arthritis and heart disease, which have all improved since your hormone replacement therapy. I am able to do things I hadn’t been able to do in several years. Thanks, again and may God bless you as you help other people like me.

Joe DeLamielleure Rosemary D.

WOW! I’M LIVING WITH A NEW MAN!! (My husband’s) depression, which had been there for most of our marriage, was gone in a month within starting hormone therapy. His color improved, he looks rested. His whole outlook on life has improved, and he is soooo kind to me, I sometimes think to myself, What was your NAME again?

I am 52 years old and was used to the way I was feeling due to perimenopause and the gradual change it was giving me. I didn’t realize how long I had not been feeling like I used to when I was in my twenties and thirties until I started your (bio-identical) hormone therapy. It was almost, literally, an overnight change!

Pam O

Cheryl J

Thank you so much for taking the time so see me. I really started feeling much better in just a couple of days and I have got to tell you that I have energy that I never had before. Feeling so much more alert and active. For the first time in years I am chasing my husband around the house. Thank you so much for what you do. These hormones were exactly what I needed. Feeling so much younger and active. A true blessing for my life.

I live an active lifestyle and I am amazed at the increase (in energy). I no longer need ‘afternoon naps.’ I wake up refreshed and ready to go. The biggest surprise has been the mental and emotional change first noticed by my wife after natural hormone replacement therapy in Scottsdale. I am up and positive. Small problems no longer knock me down and create depression. Anxieties seem to have disappeared.

Between regularly sending emails and text messages on your smart phone, spending hours gripping the steering wheel in rush hour traffic, and playing hours of tennis on the weekends, your hands are locked in an endless cycle of repetitive motions that typically go unnoticed until pain sets in. Soreness at the base of the thumb, pain, or a clicking, snapping, or locking sensation while the thumb is in motion could be a sign of trigger thumb. Trigger thumb can result from tendon inflammation due to repetitive gripping motions, or from an underlying medical condition like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice has pioneered a minimally invasive procedure to treat trigger thumb in Arizona without the need for complicated and invasive traditional surgery. The EndoTech® Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release system was designed by Dr. Fitzmaurice and is available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute. EndoTech® uses a small incision and an endoscopic technique to fix the injured tendon in an outpatient procedure. With EndoTech®, you’ll be back in motion, firm grip intact, in no time!

W

ow, it’s hot outside. Whew! To help you deal with the heat, we’ve got a super cool issue. Are you all-in for braving the outdoor temps? If so, check out our picks for local resort pool fun (pg. 34). Want to know which have water slides? Which have lazy rivers? Or perhaps which have adult-only pools? We’ve got the low-down. We also share the fun swimsuits we picked to keep you fashionable while you’re lounging poolside (pg. 48). And, if you need a tote to carry your things in for your day at the pool, we’re loving the cute Kate Spade fish straw tote on pg. 41. If you find you need a break from the heat for a bit, head out of town for a short day trip for some of the fun summer festivals featured on page 35. Now, if you think the temps outside really aren’t so bad, and you’re ready to really spice up your day, embrace the heat with one of the five fiery food dishes we profile in our food section on page 62. We guarantee it—you’ll be sweating. Speaking of on fire, read our cover story on radio personality Robyn Moore, the new co-host of The Ben & Matt Show on KNIX 102.5 (pg. 26). She’s a huge country music fan who dreamed of being a part of the broadcasting world. We share her story and journey, plus talk to her about her learning curve and future hopes. She’s a rising star, and we can’t wait to watch (and listen to!) her future success. Stay cool during this heat and enjoy your summer!

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

TAKING PARTIES OUT OF POLITICS

Phoenix’s former mayor takes a stand for voters’ rights BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

“At age 9, most kids are still into action figures. But, as my mother will tell you, my hobby was a bit unusual compared to the other boys in the neighborhood,” says Paul Johnson. “I not only made scrapbooks with photos of presidents and senators, but could tell you about their platforms and politics before I mastered long division.” continued… JULY 2015 |

up close While it might seem an odd hobby for a young boy, it would be one that would serve Johnson well. When he was just 25, Johnson was elected to the Phoenix City Council. During his second city council term in 1990, he was selected by the council to fill the vacancy left by then-Mayor Terry Goddard, who had resigned his office in order to run for governor. “At the time, I was the youngest mayor of a major American city,” says Johnson, who ran for re-election in 1993 and was elected with 99.7 percent of the vote. Though he started leading the Valley during one of the worst economic downturns in the state’s history, Johnson brought a new age of prosperity to Phoenix. He is known for his work on education, the environment, crime and children’s issues. Under his leadership, Phoenix was voted the Best Run City in the World. “I am especially proud of helping steward the nation’s first child gun laws during my time in office. And, of course, the building of the then-America West Arena, Arizona Natural History Museum, and Arizona Science Center,” says Johnson, who also served as a representative for the State Department in the Middle East and was selected by President George Bush to help Poland during its first local elections in 40 years. By the mid-1990s, Johnson was ready for the next step—a run for governor. “All my life, I ran and won elections by knocking on doors and talking to people, whether they were Republicans or Democrats,” says Johnson. “And you know what? Most people on either side of the aisle wanted a lot of the same things— good schools, safe neighborhoods, vibrant arts, and job opportunities.” But everything changed during that run for governor. “All of the sudden, my political party mattered, and it became really clear the excessive power of the special interest groups,” says Johnson, who ran on the Democratic ticket. “Within a day of choosing an affiliation, my life changed dramatically.” The idea of focusing on such narrow—often extreme—groups just to get

on the ballot for a general election never sat right with Johnson, who would lose the Democratic nomination to Eddie Basha, and the 1998 general election to Jane Hull. Disillusioned with both political parties, corruption and the system itself, he chose to become an Independent soon after. And he is not the only one. “When I ran for governor in 1998, Independents made up about 10 percent of the Arizona electorate,” says Johnson. “Today, Independents make up 35 percent of Arizona voters—they are now the largest group of voters in our state.” And, according to Johnson, the voter suppression of Independents is denying them their basic voter rights. “While Independents were given the opportunity to vote in primary elections by the late ’90s, in order to get a ballot they had to choose either Democrat or Republican,” says Johnson. “This, unfortunately, still happens today, and discourages participation.” Inspired to action, Johnson is fighting to restore equal voting rights to all citizens of Arizona.

Open Primaries “The majority of Arizonans, nearly 90 percent, believe elected officials do not represent their concerns—and they are right,” says Johnson. “Elected officials

UPTOWN |

18

| JULY 2015

focus on the concerns of not just their party, but only the members of their party who vote in primaries, who are often extreme in nature, not representing all of the citizens.” Johnson’s solution? Open primaries. “This movement is already set for the 2016 ballot,” says Johnson. “Our initiative would eliminate partisan primaries in favor of a single nonpartisan primary open to all voters, with the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, moving forward to the general election. In every election, every candidate would face every voter.” According to Johnson, California and Washington now use this model with success, and Nebraska’s state legislature is effective with nonpartisan elections. “It’s a system that actually already works,” notes Johnson, as Arizona already uses it with great success in most of its municipal elections. “We have to take away unfairly created barriers to voters, and stop trying to force people to join a political party if they want to exercise their right to vote.” The work of Johnson and his team in Arizona has captured the attention of award-winning filmmaker Jeff Reichert, who is working to document their campaign, with the goal of developing a full-length film and distributing it worldwide. Q:

I hate the varicose and spider veins on my legs – they look so unflattering in shorts and swimsuits. How can I get rid of them?

A:

Try sclerotherapy! It’s low-cost, typically painless, highly effective, and scars or adverse effects are very rare. A small needle is used to inject the vein with a concentrated solution, collapsing it and turning it into scar tissue, which is reabsorbed by the body. (This can actually improve circulation, too!) For larger veins, we offer laser ablation – another minimally-invasive, relatively painless, inoffice procedure – which is often covered by insurance. We’d be happy to help make those embarrassing veins history – it’s time to show some leg! Have a question you’d like to ask? MUSICAL REMEDIES

Suzanne Oliver uses the healing power of music to help others WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

M

usic elicits much more than a head bob or foot tap; it also has the power to evoke emotions, memories, and provide healing. Suzanne Oliver, executive director of Neurologic Music Therapy Services of Arizona (NMTSA), brings life-changing results to people with a range of neurologic disabilities via mankind’s universal language—music. Oliver, an Arizona native, combined her love of psychology, people, and passion for music by earning a bachelor’s of music in music therapy from Arizona State University. In 1982, she founded NMTSA, the first organization of its kind in the United States. “NMTSA was created to provide something unique to those in need who could not access services, and it continues to do that today.” NMTSA (2702 N. 3rd St., Ste. 1000, Phoenix; 602.840.6410; www. nmtsa.org) now serves more than 200 individuals a week in its clinical programs, and runs a school dedicated to autistic students. Oliver and her extraordinary team of experts utilizes a cutting-edge neuroscience model of music perception and production to unlock the potential for academic and other achievements that is being hindered by an individual’s disability.

Etc.

Why music? Music is able to create pathways in the brain where there are none, and to strengthen weak connections, optimizing overall brain function. Do you have any future plans for NMTSA? We will continue to keep our pulse on the community and on current research/brain science. We will continue to develop programs and provide treatment that is cutting-edge and allows people to reach their full potential. What is your favorite genre of music? I have played piano since kindergarten and the cello since fourth grade. My classical training through college still leads me to love classical music, both for listening and playing. UPTOWN |

WHO IS GYM? What one local sports official wants you to know BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

A

fter more than 30 years officiating high school sports, Arizona native Scott Hanson has been questioned (putting it mildly) by coaches, overzealous parents, and student athletes from Scottsdale to Sierra Vista. But it was actually questions Hanson had himself that led him to write his first book, Who is Gym, which shares and preserves the stories behind Arizona’s high school sports venues. “The idea for the book started three years ago during a Cactus High football game. The field was named M.L. Huber Stadium, so I asked around regarding who he was. To my surprise, no one knew,” says Hanson. “A week later, it happened again at another school—and I was motivated to action.” His first action—a conversation with state historian Marshall Trimble. “Marshall was quick to point out that there was no one place where all of this history lived,” says Hanson. “He told me I should take it upon myself to create a record and collection for our state. Those were powerful words.” Who is Gym? is available now at www.whoisgym.com.

Etc.

How did you research each story? I tracked down every athletic director, administrator, alumnus, librarian, local historian and longtime school employee that would talk to me, one by one! Any surprising stories? There is a field in Bisbee named for Arizona female softball players who helped inspire A League of their Own with Tom Hanks. What’s your day job? While I was once a sportscaster, I’ve owned a local PR agency since 1991. JULY 2015 |

lex Evjen's passion for fashion blossomed at an early age. “I used to sketch dresses on the floor of my bedroom in elementary school, and I never stopped,” she says. Evjen turned that passion into a career when she created A.V.E. Styles, a small content creation company that cultivates brand awareness for brands through artful communication. This artful communication can be seen via Evjen's ever-present engagement with her one million (and counting) followers on Pinterest, earning her the title of Pinterest Pinbassador. With Pinteresters following her fashion boards for inspiration, and high-end retailers knocking on A.V.E. Styles' door for her innovative expertise, Evjen's personal style is always on-point... or should we say always on-pin. “I like to describe my style as tomboy-meets-Palm Springs-glam,” she says. Evjen keeps her go-to outfits simple but stylish with a sharp blazer and a pair of jeans. “It’s not too glamorous, but I always make sure I feel like myself. There is a part of me that appreciates unusual color combinations, bohemian flair, and the laidback style of the West Coast,” she adds.

What are a few of the big name brands you have worked with? [A.V.E. Styles ran] campaigns for Glamour, Revlon, American Express, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Coca-Cola, etc. You believe that well-styled imagery not only influences culture, but creates it. What do you mean by this? I believe that everyone in this world is attracted to beauty. We seek it out even though what is beautiful may be defined differently by the person sitting next to you. I think we have the power to say what is beautiful and desirable by sharing what we personally desire. That’s what I have done with my Pinterest feed, and I believe that over time, the social influence that I currently have will create a new culture.

SELF-MADE STYLE Dr. Nicolas Porter rocks his trademark look BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

D

r. Nicolas Porter, the CEO and founder of Risas Dental and Braces (www.risasdental.com), has come a long way since growing up in Heber. As the Arcadia resident’s business booms (he no longer practices dentistry, instead focusing on expanding his network of dental businesses along with establishing and nurturing his charitable works), he certainly looks the part of a successful entrepreneur. But that wasn’t always the case. “Three years ago, my style was horrible and it took my friend, Rory Doucette, to teach me a few things about fashion,” says Porter. “The thing I learned first was the importance of buying the right fit. I never cared and often had clothing that was too large. When I fixed this, I started seeing a whole new person.” That new person even has a trademark style. “I call it the Dr. Nico look,” he says. “It is never overly casual and it’s not suitand-tie. I would say the Dr. Nico look I shoot for is about not making anyone I interact with uncomfortable, whether that person is someone from my childhood or a private equity CEO.”

Does where you grew up influence your look? In a way it does. I grew up with very with humble beginnings and with a very simple mindset, so to me, the simpler and cleaner, the better. What one piece should all men own to be in style? A vest. I truly believe that the vest is what allows for my versatility for a wide range of events. It dresses up casual and dresses down formal–when, in both situations, it’s worn without a jacket. Did you inherit your fashion sense? I love my dad, but his style is the worst, and it hasn’t changed for years! Polyester pants with whatever style shirt. The pants were an everyday and every occasion; the shirt is what changed based on the event. Little League game: polyester pants and white baseball tee. Church: polyester pants and white shirt and tie. JULY 2015 |

Sometimes, an occupation is a passion. Robyn Moore has had a passion for broadcasting since junior high school. As the new co-host of The Ben & Matt Show on KNIX 102.5, she’s living her dream— and is somewhat surprised at the fun turn of events that landed her in the Phoenix radio scene. Moore became interested in broadcast journalism in seventh grade when she wanted to get involved with her middle school production of homeroom news and be a news anchor. “In high school, I was involved in journalism all four years, writing for the school newspaper and being the news anchor for our school broadcast. It was my life,” Moore says. She shadowed reporters at local stations and was voted “Most Likely to be the Next Katie Couric” in high school. “You can say I was a little anxious to get started in the business!” she adds. The journalism bug had bitten Moore and she headed off to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University. “I studied broadcast journalism for the first two years, and believe it or not, I was burned out. To try something new, I did a public relations internship and really enjoyed it, so I switched majors to public relations my sophomore year. Everyone was pretty surprised by my decision because broadcasting had been my dream for years,” Moore explains. After graduation, Moore landed her first PR job at a local firm where she worked for nearly three years before moving to Los Angeles. She says, “I worked for an amazing agency out there working in travel PR. I loved living by the beach and I met so many amazing people. But overall, L.A. wasn’t for me. I was ready to come home, back to Arizona, and try something new in regards to my career—whether that meant a job outside of PR or doing freelance work. I was considering medical sales, but then KNIX came along. “I had never really considered radio before, but I was approached for the gig through my friend Joe, who is now my producer. After a few auditions, I was offered the opportunity to join Ben and Matt on KNIX in the mornings. I feel so UPTOWN |

blessed to have found my dream job with iHeartMedia in a city that I adore. Not sure I’ll ever get used to the 3 a.m. alarm though,” she says, laughing. “Being the sole woman on the show, it’s a huge honor to represent our female listeners throughout the Valley. I also get to bring my younger perspective to the show, and you truly cannot find a bigger country music fan than me. I live for country music and to be able to talk about it every day for a living is surreal,” Moore says. “My job entails talking about country music, which I am so passionate about. It doesn’t feel like a job—and that’s the best type of job to have. I get to meet and talk to the greatest artists in the genre, and our listeners, who are the best! I get to share my life with others, and the support is overwhelming. I truly have the best team to work with,” Moore explains. She continues, “Everyone at iHeartMedia is fantastic to work with. There is so much talent under our roof and it’s motivating. Everyone is supportive and patient, especially with me being new to the industry. It’s a great environment and the company has an exceptional reputation.” Moore is still in the learning curve of broadcast radio. She explains, “I have had no radio experience in my past and everything is so new to me, but I have great mentors and I'm learning so much. As simple as ‘being yourself’ sounds, it can be hard to do with a microphone in your face and talking with two professionals who have been doing it for 20-plus years. There is a lot more to it than it looks, but trust me, it’s worth every ounce of effort.” When Moore is not on air she is probably listening to country music, at a concert, or practicing her two-step. “My favorite country artist is Jason Aldean. I don’t know what it is about his songs but they get me every time. My two favorite country songs are “Just to See You Smile” by Tim McGraw and “Check Yes or No” by George Strait,” Moore says. “If you asked me six months ago where I’d be today, I wouldn’t have said being on the radio in Phoenix. It’s crazy how life works out, and I am fortunate to have my dream job,” Moore finishes. “Our goal is to continue to be the best country station in Arizona, and eventually in other markets. I look forward to many more years with KNIX and iHeartMedia.” JULY 2015 |

culture each child’s story through two different perspectives is an incredibly empowering experience—for both the kids and the professional artists,” says Hurni. “I‘ve also heard from staff and guests alike how emotional the exhibit is and how engaged they are with each child’s story and art.” Kelzey Hinton just graduated sixth grade at Kerr Elementary in Mesa. She teamed with professional artist Todd McQueen, and together they created a beautiful pair of paintings. “My painting is about the Eiffel Tower,” says Hinton. “I did that because I’ve always wanted to go to Paris. I love the culture.” She says that she would like to continue to explore art in the future. “It’s been great. I love the hopes and dreams of Kelzey, who has her whole future in front of her. It was fun to take what she told me and transcribe it to my vision,” states McQueen, who is a graphic designer and a children’s book author and illustrator. Hurni finishes, “What I personally love about this exhibit is how art can be a device that provides kids with a new direction. Exposure to art and artists can make all the difference in their lives and be a positive influence on their future.” Off Madison Ave is located at 5555 E. s an advertising agency, Off Madison Ave relies on the creative and artistic expertise and intuition of its staff to orchestrate compelling stories for its wide variety of clients. But Off Madison Ave’s corporate culture also embraces and incorporates art in a unique way by having new art installed at its office four times each year. Recently, the agency teamed up with Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona to bring in a unique display of visual art to The Agency Gallery at Off Madison Ave’s Phoenix office. “The Agency Gallery exists to celebrate creativity. We use the gallery to expose our clients, staff and guests to new and interesting perspectives through art,” explains Roger Hurni, managing partner and chief creative officer at Off Madison Ave. “We’re a non-profit organization that works with more than 38 homeless shelters, facilities and group homes,” says Kim Willey, program manager at Free Arts. “We provide a variety of programs for kids in those environments.” The Off Madison Ave art project came about as a result of Free Arts contracting with professional artists to work one-on-one with its large community of children. In this specific art installation, each artist created a work of art that relayed something unique about the individual child, and in return, the child made their own work of art under the mentoring and friendship of the senior artist. “The current exhibition with Free Arts of Arizona is different from our usual showings in several ways. O

ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession

Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. During your Complimentary Consult, they can educate you on this amazing procedure and how they can help correct your receding gums without sutures and with mild post operative pain.

Best Pool Slides Perhaps you are looking for more than a relaxing river ride. Why not head on over to the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale (www.scottsdale.hyatt. com), where they have a water playground? Here you can enjoy 10 swimming pools; 20 fountains; 45 waterfalls; and a cool 30-foot, threestory, high-speed waterslide. Another great location to catch a ride on a great big waterslide this summer is the Arizona Grand Resort (www.arizonagrandresort. com). Its Oasis Water Park offers an eight-story tower with three water slides and a huge wave pool. At the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess (www.fairmont.com/scottsdale), you’ll enjoy two water slides that are part of a 6,000-square-foot water oasis–which is just one of the resort’s pools.

If you’re looking for a possible celebrity sighting or to be seen yourself, check out the Hotel Valley Ho (www.hotelvalleyho. com), which is known for people- and celeb-watching. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LITTLE CLEO’S SEAFOOD LEGEND?

My staff. One hundred percent. They all come in every day with a smile on, and then proceed to execute my food at such a high level. All of the fresh seafood dishes and oysters we offer are amazing, but if it weren’t for my staff, none of this would be possible. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU?

All of our oysters. I get to work with some of the coolest oysters from around the country, here in the desert. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE A CHEF?

Not what, but who—my parents! Watching and helping my Mom in the kitchen and hanging with my Pop at the restaurants he used to run influenced me greatly. It runs in my blood.

WHAT IS ONE COOKING TIP FOR SEAFOOD THAT YOU CAN SHARE?

DRINK LIKE A VIP

Marinated for two weeks, the VIP Cocktail is a must-try BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

“W

e were looking to embody the richness of the drink; it's a drink that anyone and everyone can enjoy, and it really makes one feel like a VIP,” explains Mark Morey, the lead bartender at Del Frisco’s Grille, of the restaurant’s VIP Cocktail. Made with sweet, tropical pineapple, Svedka Clementine, and garnished with an orange twist, the drink “tastes like a tropical vacation—refreshing and sweet, but not overly,” explains Morey. To make the VIP Cocktail, the bartenders at Del Frisco’s cut approximately 14 pineapples into cubes, then pour the clementine vodka over them. After letting the mixture soak and marinate for two weeks, they then hand-squeeze the pineapple. The drink ($10.50 or $6 during Happy Hour) is then served chilled in a martini glass. “We wanted something that both men and women would love to drink,” Morey says of the creation. We recommend trying the VIP Cocktail while sitting on Del Frisco’s amazing upstairs patio and taking in views of the Valley. If you need some nibbles, the drink pairs perfectly with the Cheesesteak Eggrolls or Ahi Tuna Tacos. 2425 E. Camelback Road, Ste. 110, Phoenix; 602.466.2890; www.delfriscosgrille.com/phoenix.

KEEP IT SHADY

Hear that? It’s the sound of diving board springs, the splash of a mighty cannonball, and the hum of a boat engine. Yes, summertime has officially sprung, and the lure of anything involving large bodies of water is at its peak—and so are the sun’s rays. Go ahead, dive in–but don’t go uncovered. Stay protected from head to toe and in the glow with these summertime must-haves.

Summer’s best fun-in-the-sun product finds BY LISA KASANICKY

Face Off If you prefer to go au naturel to avoid the thick, ghostly white cast of some facial sunblocks, you can stop that right now. Seriously. HydroPeptide Solar Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 fends off sun damage while self-adjusting to the color of your skin tone for natural, non-chalky coverage. A powerful punch of anti-aging ingredients like acai and green tea pair up with moisture-binding peptides to accelerate long-lasting hydration and clarity. $44 at www.hydropeptide.com.

Body Glove Even when you’re slathered in sunscreen, the sun can still sap your skin of nutrients and natural moisture. La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid for your body combats skin-sapping with its exclusive “Cell-OX Shield technology,” which combines UVA and UVB filters for broad spectrum protection with a powerful antioxidant complex to help protect skin from free radicals caused by UV rays. Ultra-light and fast-absorbing, the formula is safe for sensitive skin and water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. $36.99 at www.laroche-posay.us.

Lip-Lock Does your icy cold daiquiri taste a bit… off? It could be that lip balm you’re using. Coola Liplux SPF 30 keeps your pucker protected, minus that funky flavor of some lip protectants. The unscented lip balm contains a subtle blend of food-grade fruit butters to keep your lips hydrated while providing broad-spectrum sunscreen protection. Liplux is 70 percent certified organic, and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Cannonball! $12 at www.coolasuncare.com.

Scalp Safe Avoid hat head while keeping your scalp protected with NIOS Shield Leave-in Conditioner SPF 15. The lightweight, spray-on conditioner protects the scalp from a sunburn, while nourishing hair with vitamins E and B5. The Moroccan argan oil tames frizz and gives a healthy, natural luster. $26 at www.niosshield.com.

Glow On Self-tanner fans, listen up! Keep your faux glow aglow with Endurance Color Boosting Skin Perfector from the Norvell Dancing with the Stars Sunless Collection. Offering the skincare benefits of a colorcorrecting cream, Endurance also moisturizes, brightens and firms—all while evening out skin tone and extending your self-tanning color results. t was in Santa Monica, Calif., where we first met. We fell in love, had a torrid affair, and two days later it was over. Volvo wanted their all-new 2016 XC90 back. Just last month, Volvo unveiled the production version of the completely new 2016 XC90 in celebrity-laden Southern California where, I think you can surmise, the plush, coastal urban environs are gallingly, freakishly flush with must-have status vehicles. The XC90 has a gorgeous, flowing shape, like an Eva Hild sculpture. It’s an enormously comfortable, commanding vehicle with a world-class interior replete with more leather and wood than a Renaissance festival. For maximum comfort, opt for the optional contour seats, which are the most comfortable I’ve experienced in any vehicle. Additionally, I would be remiss if I JULY 2015 |

didn’t mention Volvo’s driver-assistance technology. Called Sensus, the smartphone-like display screen that dominates the center stack is Volvo’s infotainment system, and controls almost all of the vehicle’s functions. I found it easy to use, intuitive and responsive—the best I’ve found in any luxury vehicle. The optional $2,650 1400-wattt Bowers & Wilkins audio system is worth mentioning. Volvo claims to have benchmarked the acoustics of the Gothenburg Concert Hall in Sweden for speaker placement. For audiophiles, it’s worth every penny. The XC90 is offered in two models: the T6 and T8. Identical in appearance, they are completely different vehicles under the hood, even though the same supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter engine powers both. On the T8, the engine is paired with an 82-horsepower electric motor to deliver a total of 400 horsepower. This model occupies an unusual spot in the luxury segment as the world’s first sevenpassenger plug-in hybrid vehicle, and can be driven up to 20 miles in all-electric mode. The T6 delivers 318 horsepower to all four wheels and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. As with all Volvo product offerings, there’s an impressive roster of safety features, including autonomous braking with day or night pedestrian and cyclist detection, collapsible seat mounts to reduce vertical impacts, lane departure warnings and convenience telematics. Optional features include rear collision alerts, blind-spot warnings, crosstraffic alerts, a surround-view camera system, lane-keeping assist, and automated parallel and perpendicular parking. The 2016 Volvo XC90 checks all the boxes. It’s class-leading comfortable, roomy, safe, with killer good looks—an absolute necessity to be successful.

FREDERICKSBURG A luxury escape in the Texas Hill Country BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

F

Shop ’Til You Drop

redericksburg, founded by German immigrants in the 1840s, is about an hour north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. The town is now filled with historic limestone buildings, some of the sweetest peaches in the world, luxurious B&Bs, world-class shopping, art galleries, restaurants, wineries, museums, and plenty of outdoor fun.

The quaint shops lining Main Street are filled with unexpected treasures. Art galleries line the street, and you can find everything from contemporary art to Americana to European antiques. Be sure to stop by Vaudeville (www.vaudeville-living.com), one of the most unique shops anywhere. It features a gallery with rotating exhibits, a boutique with treasures for your home, a supper club, a gourmet market, and a chic bistro with tasty bites. Wander off Main Street to find Carol Hicks Bolton Antiqüités (www.carolhicksbolton.com) for the most unusual treasures. The massive warehouse is filled with French cabinets, antique books, European curiosities, old farm tables, and intriguing industrial objects.

Get Outdoors The Texas Hill Country is renowned for the wildflowers that blanket the area from spring through fall. One of the best places to check out the wildflowers—and even pick up seeds to plant at your own home—is at Wildseed Farms (www.wildseedfarms.com). This family-owned business is the country’s largest producer of wildseed, and the fields of flowers that stretch across more than 200 acres, along with the associated birds and butterflies, are breathtaking. About 18 miles north of town is Enchanted Rock, the country’s second largest granite dome, which reaches 500 feet high. The Summit Trail to the top is fairly strenuous, but an easier four-mile Loop Trail is popular with hikers and bikers. Rock climbers prefer the park’s many climbs, including the 1,000-foot-long Enchanted Rock Fissure.

Wine, Dine and Unwind You won’t go hungry or thirsty during your visit. Fredericksburg Herb Farm (www.fredericksburgherbfarm.com) is a fantasy garden filled with walking paths, as well as luxurious Sunday Haus Cottages, the indulgent Nature’s Spa, farm-fresh dishes at The Farm Haus Bistro, and a selection of homemade soaps and lotions in the gift shop. Cabernet Grill (www.cottonginlodging.com) serves up only Texas wines with its delicious steaks, and portions out the best peach cobbler in the state. Peaches are a specialty in Fredericksburg, so if they’re in season, pick up a few at one of the roadside stands. One of the best ways to experience Fredericksburg is to head out on Wine Road 290 (www.wineroad290.com). Now the country’s second most-visited wine region, you can visit 15 local wineries. For more about Fredericksburg, visit www.fredericksburgtexasonline.com.

A Touch of History Fredericksburg is home to several museums, including the Pioneer Museum, which details the town’s history. The National Museum of the Pacific War (www.pacificwarmuseum.org), which also includes the Admiral Nimitz Museum, George H.W. Bush Gallery and Japanese Garden of Peace, is a spectacular interactive experience that chronicles U.S. life during the Pacific War years, and is ideal for visitors of all ages. UPTOWN |

ONE SMART GRILL This grill takes cooking to the next level BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

I

t’s a fact—life, for most of us, is extremely busy. Home and work obligations make for a lack of time, as well as necessitate the art of multitasking. It can be tiring and overwhelming. Enter Lynx Grills. One day, those at the company decided to ask a simple question—could today’s “smart technology” make a meaningful difference in the grilling experience for people with busy lives? The answer was yes—and the result is this SmartGrill. The Lynx SmartGrill is the first voiceactivated smart grill that automatically cooks foods based on user commands, explains the company. The operation of the grill is driven by a fly-by-wire system that drives the primary functions, such as the ignition and burners, via an automated system that cooks recipes that have been preprogrammed by Lynx's master grillers for “a perfect meal, every time.”

Essentially, you can use your smart device or voice commands to grill the perfect meal. Each time you use the grill, you’ll be asked what you’ll be cooking. The grill will then connect to an online database to determine the optimal grilling time and technique for the food. It will also tell you where to place each item on the grill to ensure the best result, and so that all the items of your meal are done at the same time. And yes, you can set the gas grill to cook to your own preferences. In fact, a learning module updates recipes based on user input. JULY 2015 |

47

| UPTOWN

In addition to cooking a perfect meal, the SmartGrill offers another great option—you don’t need to be tied to standing over the grill so that you don’t overcook the food. Rather, the SmartGrill will notify you when it is ready for the next step via your smart device. Worried about getting busy and forgetting that the grill is on? The company thought about that, as well—the SmartGrill shuts off if it doesn’t hear instructions for 30 minutes. $6,000-$9,500, depending on options. http://smart.lynxgrills.com.

It’s been a Valley staple for 66 years, and now it has a new home. The locally and family-owned Miracle Mile Deli recently moved from the Camelback Colonnade to its first-ever stand-alone venue, a 6,600-square-foot space at 4433 N. 16th St., Phoenix (just two blocks south of Camelback Road). In addition to its famous deli sandwiches (fun fact: the restaurant has sold more than 48,000 pounds of pastrami since it opened!), burgers, and signature entrées, at the new spot there will also be microbrews on tap, seasonal wines, homemade pies, and real ice cream milkshakes. The restaurant will also now be open for breakfast. 602.776.0992; www.miraclemiledeli.com. JULY 2015 |

EMBRACE THE HEAT

Fight fire with the fire of these 5 fiery feasts BY TARYN JEFFRIES

W

hile we may have had an easy breezy spring, summer has definitely arrived and we are going to be paying for those 70- and 80-degree days in the form of high-100s for a good long time. Your first response might be to head to the pool or to your local froyo spot, and no one would blame you. But why not switch things up a bit and fight fire with fire? Embrace the heat of the day by pairing the temperature of your dinner with that of the thermometer outside. Be sure to have a chilled drink at the ready to pair with this selection of the area’s hottest dishes. Be warned though, most of these dishes come with warnings, which means

you order it, it’s yours. No refunds or exchanges, so make sure you can handle the heat! WINGS WITH NUCLEAR SAUCE Half Moon Windy City Sports Grill, 2121 E. Highland Ave., Phoenix; 602.977.2700; www.halfmoonsportsgrill.com This Chicago bar is a favorite of many Midwestern transplants in the area, and what is the typical go-to dish at a sports bar? Wings, of course! The wings here have won some serious local awards, and these meaty finger foods are well deserving of them. There are seven different sauces available, most of which you’ve certainly come across and tried many times. The by-far winner in the battle of the heat is their Nuclear Sauce, made up of six different chiles. The wings themselves are hearty in portion, and sold UPTOWN |

by the pound or half-pound. Unlike some of their other sauces, there is no slow burn here—this is some serious melt-yourface-off heat. Too hot for you? Too bad, once you order it there are no refunds or exchanges, so order wisely. TACOS WITH CHARRED HABANERO SALSA Joyride Taco House, 5202 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.274.8226; www.joyridetacohouse.com Looking for a place to really spice up your Taco Tuesday? With over 10 different kinds of tacos and the ability to mix and match, the possibilities for a truly memorable meal are seemingly endless. If you want to spice up any of their taco options, their Charred Habanero salsa will have you sweating in no time. This salsa combines the expected flavors of roasted roma tomatoes, red pepper,

food files garlic and onions with the unique citruslike flavor of the habanero pepper. Need some reference? The habanero pepper is about 140 times hotter than the mildest jalapeño. When you pair this salsa with their spicy Chicken Tinga taco, you’ll find that the White Magic sauce on the taco (their house lime aioli) with the citrus flavors really pops, and while you’ve got a substantial amount of heat, you’ve also got some really great flavors dancing in your mouth. Having easy access to any one of their Agua Frescas won’t hurt your cause, either. ADOVADA RIBS Los Dos Molinos, 1044 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.528.3535; www.losdosmolinosphoenix.com Those with a love for all things spicy are well aware of Los Dos Molinos and its intense New Mexican menu. You’ll find the word chili peppered throughout the menu, but don’t be fooled into thinking that these chilis are mild. The chilis used in the dishes here are chilis from New Mexico— and they are hot. Chef Victoria will be the first to tell you that she doesn’t know how to do mild, so if you hear that a dish is hot, trust that it is seriously hot. If you are looking for a challenge, shoot for the Adovada Ribs. At its simplest definition, Adovada means marinated, and here you will find the country-style pork ribs marinated in a red chili sauce. While the heat is blatantly present, you’ll also be able to taste the intense combination of flavors, as they have married with the tender meat. While you sweat through the heat of your dish, order up a margarita to cool off your taste buds—they’ll definitely appreciate it! MOTO WINGS, EXIT WOUND BOWL, CLASSIFIED BOWL Moto Sushi, 6845 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.263.5444; www.mrmotorising.com Moto creator Vince Heppler has created a unique concept of combining Asian influences in this hip and modern environment. When you settle in with your menu at Moto, you’ll find a rating system of pitchforks, which will be your first indication that they take their heat

considering it? Did you count the pitchforks?” For the record, there are six pitchforks!

seriously. Now, not all of the dishes have pitchforks of course, but there are quite a few that do. There are Moto Wings that boast five pitchforks when tossed in their Mustard Gas sauce. The name pretty much says it all. Imagine a heat so hot that your eyes water to the point where you just can’t open them up again. Another intriguing dish on the menu is the four-pitchfork Exit Wound Bowl, created with crispy shrimp, grilled chicken and veggies, along with their Hell Fire Sauce, all on top of white or brown rice. The heat is heavenly, despite the sauce’s moniker. It burns, in the best possible way, but it’s not the hottest they’ve got. Which is? The Classified Bowl. I can’t vouch for how many people have ordered it, especially with the description they provide. “Do not order. You’re still JULY 2015 |

PASTA HEIDI Rokerij, 6335 N. 16th St., Phoenix; 602.287.8900; www.richardsonsnm. com/rokerij The stone casing of Rokerij, paired with the dim lighting in the interior, creates a romantic and almost storybook atmosphere. With a Dutch moniker (Rokerij means smokehouse in Dutch), you wouldn’t immediately conjure up thoughts of spicy dishes, but trust that they are here. One beautifully spicy dish is the Pasta Heidi. The dish is made of a base of fresh-made green chile linguine, combined with grilled chicken, and then tossed in a deceptive chipotle cream sauce. You might think that the cream would cut the heat slightly, and it might, but there is still fire there. Like all the spicy selections you’ll find on the menu, the heat does not overpower the dish. While there is a lot of heat, it doesn’t mask the rich flavors of the cream and the nice charred flavor of the chicken. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the heat (I warned you), your server can have a tall Prickly Pear Margarita to you in no time to help cut the blaze.

cultivate community inside and outside the building.” The list of businesses includes Uber’s Arizona headquarters, Mornin’ Moonshine (a boutique “grab-and-go” coffee concept), Hidden Track Bottle Shop (wine), Esoteric Audio, Black Cat Vintage (clothing, shoes and accessories sold exclusively online and by private appointment) and Inspire Data Solutions (one of the top cloud consulting companies in the United States). While some might have built something new to house everything, the team behind 111 West Monroe had another idea in mind. “Thoughtful treatment of ‘older’ buildings, and respect for their place in our built environment, makes meaningful contributions to our shared story—past and present,” says O’Neil. “Literally speaking, older buildings tend to have excellent locations, offering greater surrounding amenities for users. Monroe is a great example. For relatively young cities like Phoenix, we are just now undergoing a renaissance of sorts. Repurposing buildings and spaces is equally important to both ‘generational locals’ and diverse new residents and organizations.” The owners have a specific vision of not only who will open shop within their space, but who will frequent the businesses within. “The building is a classic mid-century modern structure,” says O’Neil. “Our renovations are intended to bring it up to current design standards without losing the original ’60s ‘feel.’ People seem to appreciate elements like our hand-laid, brasslined terrazzo floors and custom planters, and the building is attracting downtown leaders and business owners who want to be part of a unique project. It is rewarding to bring vintage real estate forward into today’s dynamic market, and it is particularly exciting to see it embraced and appreciated by the millennial generation of entrepreneurs.” For more information about 111 West Monroe or to inquire about leasing space, contact Danny Plapp or Charles Miscio at 602.222.5071.

It’s been a busy year at the 111 West Monroe building. With an eclectic mix of businesses now open or opening soon, the building is teeming with new life. Deciding which businesses to bring in was a team effort. “Developing the ground floor experience is a selective and collaborative process,” says Tim O’Neil, part of the ownership group of 111 West Monroe. “Fortunately, with active local ownership and connectivity within the community, local businesses are creating an authentic, boutique experience.
