MEN’S HEALTH

Gino Tutera MD FACOG, SottoPelle Medical Director answers your questions.

Do men need hormone replacement therapy too?

Yes. It’s a common misconception that women are the only ones who need hormone replacement therapy as they age. Many men often believe that feeling constantly tired, having the inability to gain muscle mass as a part of aging can negatively impact your ability to perform at work, relationships with friends and in your body and life. Every man experiences a gradual decline in hormone production as he gets older, finds himself having less sexual desire, gaining weight, and losing muscle mass and feeling unmotivated, depressed and moody. Most men who don’t have hormone replacement therapy believe they have to live with these symptoms as part of normal aging. Nothing could be further from the truth! SottoPelle® hormone replacement therapy can help bring back vitality and quality of life.

Do you have a question for Dr. Tutera? Visit our website www.sottopelletherapy.com and contact us or submit all questions to response@sphrt.com It has been a bonus to notice a real increase in my sexual desire and interest. This hormone replacement therapy treatment has made a significant increase in the quality of my life. I am sure I will continue these hormone therapy treatments for the rest of my life.

Stanly P

SottoPelle has really changed my life. I have so much more physical energy and mental clarity and don’t even have a headache anymore. The difference in just a few months has been truly amazing and I feel so much better every day.

Joe DeLamielleure

I live an active lifestyle and I am amazed at the increase (in energy). I no longer need ‘afternoon naps.’ I wake up refreshed and ready to go. The biggest surprise has been the mental and emotional change first noticed by my wife after natural hormone replacement therapy in Scottsdale. I am up and positive. Small problems no longer knock me down and create depression. Anxieties seem to have disappeared.

H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

NON-PARTISAN LAGER Mayor Greg Stanton and Councilman Bill Gates collaborate to create a brew BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

In today’s political climate, only one thing is certain—there is much disagreement. But one thing that Democratic Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Republican District 3 Councilman Bill Gates continued… JUNE 2015 |

no t iced

up close discovered is that beer is one of the few issues both parties agree on. On the Summer Solstice, June 21, the mayor and the councilman, along with Phoenix’s locally owned North Mountain Brewing, will launch NonPartisan Lager. Phoenix native Rob Berkner and his wife, Candy, opened the local brewpub at 5th Street and Dunlap in 2012. Located in the historic Sunnyslope neighborhood, North Mountain saw this as a great chance to bring together local politicians and bring attention to the revitalization efforts in Sunnyslope. Originally asked to participate in a ribbon-cutting event, the mayor and the councilman saw this as a perfect opportunity to bring more recognition to an area of Phoenix that seems to elicit a lot of passion—Sunnyslope is one of Phoenix’s oldest and closest communities, and today is one of the most diverse socio-economic communities in Phoenix. Many of its residents have been in the area for a long time, and many more people throughout Phoenix have their roots in Sunnyslope. The one constant in the community that is dominated by the famous “S” Mountain is the sense of pride. Sunnyslope is in the process of area revitalization and renovation, and many see the addition of North Mountain Brewing as a clear indication of Sunnyslope’s improvement. Gates, who learned to appreciate good beer during his years as a Harvard Law School student, says the creation of the signature suds “has been a great way for us to connect with members of the Sunnyslope community.” The Non-Partisan Lager is a Munich Helles-style beer, chosen because it is a fairly approachable style, with a crisp clean taste for summer. The strawcolored lager offers a taste somewhat like a pilsner, although smoother and maltier. However, the beer is also a more difficult style to brew. Because it has such a clean flavor, any flaws in the brew are obvious. Owner and head brewer Berkner thought it was the perfect style for the signature across-the-aisle brew. “After

the challenges of opening a brewery and getting the councilman and mayor together, it seemed appropriate to brew a challenging beer.” It’s also perfect for Berkner, who spent time in beer school in Munich. North Mountain chose to tap the special blend during the Summer Solstice on Sunday, June 21, because that is the longest day of the year and the official kick-off of the summer season here in Phoenix.

UPTOWN |

20

| JUNE 2015

The brew will only be initially available at North Mountain Brewery, but will be available in a limited run at some local restaurants. Gates hopes that the public will enjoy the new lager. “We can’t wait for everyone to stop by and try something all parties can enjoy—political preferences aside.” For more details about North Mountain Brewing and Non-Partisan Lager, visit www.northmountainbrewing.com.

THE COURTROOM VS. THE CANVAS Leon Silver creates a balanced life BY MIKE SAUCIER PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

S

ome lawyers paint defendants as bad people—it’s part of the job. But few lawyers actually paint in the sense of using a brush and canvas to create art. Leon Silver, a Phoenix lawyer by day and artist by night, is the rare guy who can exit work mode for a little and retreat into his own world by pursuing a passion—painting. Painting has been with him every step of the way through his career—a consistent pattern of legal mediation at work followed by artistic meditation at home. Prior to attending law school, he worked as an art teacher and working artist. As co-managing partner of the Phoenix office of Gordon & Rees LLP, Silver has 25-plus years of experience in handling business and real estate trials, arbitrations and mediations. He also co-founded the Liberty Project, a think tank made up of law students and young lawyers, medical students, and others who have committed to the protection and advancement of reproductive rights. Through it all, he has always made time to paint. He has awards to show for his work in both legal and artistic realms, but it’s his art that can be seen in offices, homes and public spaces across the country.

Etc.

Does your painting allow for an escape from your legal work or does it serve to help it? For me, painting is not just an escape from law, it’s an escape from everything. When I paint, I typically become completely absorbed in the painting and the process. Recently I did a painting in my garage studio. My daughter told me after I was done that she had been in the garage watching me paint for a while. I had no idea she was ever there. What typically serves as inspiration for your paintings? Whether I’m painting or writing songs, my ideas usually come from one of three places: those I love, observing art or nature, or simply finding inspiration from within. UPTOWN |

Sounds like you’re dealing with a benign (and common!) genetic

REACHING FOR THE CLOUDS

Paper Clouds Apparel is a T-shirt company with a heart BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

R

obert Thornton transformed one drawing on a refrigerator into a T-shirt company that has raised nearly $100,000 for special needs charities. It began when Thornton visited his mother, a bus driver for children with special needs, and saw a picture hanging in her home that had been created by one of her passengers. The picture sparked a fire in him, and he immediately imagined the design on a T-shirt. He launched Paper Clouds Apparel (PCA) soon after, selling T-shirts, hats and totes featuring artwork designed by individuals with special needs. For each of its campaigns (87 and counting!) PCA (www.papercloudsapparel.com) donates 50 percent of its net proceeds from each sale to the charity that it is featuring at the time. The company also hires adults with special needs to help fold and package the apparel. PCA’s ultimate goal is to be able to help any special needs cause it wants, and change the way the world sees and treats people with special needs.

Etc.

What are a few of your favorite designs thus far? Logan's Skull design is one that I wear often. Another favorite is this Dinosaur Ballerina that was created by a 12-year-old girl named Julia who has autism. I mean, who doesn't love a dinosaur in a tutu? You’re a selfproclaimed T-shirt junkie. How vast is your T-shirt collection? I was just telling a friend that my closet is about 75 percent PCA shirts. The other 25 percent of my closet has shirts from bands that I love. Where did the name Paper Clouds Apparel come from? As a kid, the first piece of art I remember creating was with cotton balls—gluing them to construction paper and making clouds in the sky. UPTOWN |

ertified private yoga instructor Samantha Conlin describes her personal style as edgy, classic, and seemingly effortless chic. “Being that my profession is a yoga teacher, I get to wear comfortable clothing from great brands such as lululemon and Spiritual Gangster,” she says. Conlin enjoys a variety of designers, not limiting her personal style to yoga wear. “My favorite designers I have in my closet currently include Gucci, Valentino, Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, and of course, Burberry.” When it comes to enjoying a casual night out with friends, Conlin says her go-to look is a pair of dark blue Rag & Bone jeans with a cute top and a pair of amazing heels. However, for a fancy night out on the town, she is inclined to turn to something really fun such as a Valentino Red dress, and of course, some amazing heels! One thing that friends and family may be surprised to learn about an item hanging in Conlin’s closet? “I have an amazing black corset from Agent Provocateur that I wear with slim black leggings sometimes out on the town.”

SAMANTHA CONLIN

What is your favorite thing to do when enjoying a night out with friends? A nice long dinner at a great restaurant with an extensive wine list. Who are your style inspirations? POLYVORE APP. If you don't have it, get it! Also, Rachel Zoe's weekly email and my personal shopper at Nordstrom. If someone wanted to give yoga a try for the first time, what would you tell them? ugatchi shirts, jeans and Birkenstocks? This may not sound like your typical technology investor and venture capitalist style combination, but then again, Andrew Bart may not be your typical tech head. Bart is an influential entrepreneur, a top-level businessman who likes to keep his personal and professional style conservative yet fun. “I try to keep my wardrobe comfortable and casual, but also be able to transition when needed,” says Bart. “I go to about 40 conferences a year, and depending on what type of conference, I dress to fit within the spectrum of the community.” Bart shows his style love most consistently for designers like Bugatchi, saying the colorful and comfortable shirts go with any pair of jeans and slacks. During an evening with friends, you will likely find Bart wearing his Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans, a T-shirt and signature Birkenstocks, but when going out to an event, such as the Symphony, Bart finds it necessary to shine in his best. “If everyone is dressed one way, this is a time where I feel it is best to be dressed one notch above where everyone else should be. This is the peak of where I present myself.” Is there an actor whose style you think you emulate, from any era? I am an easygoing guy who goes with the flow and doesn't really follow a lead or emulate anyone. However, if I had to emulate a celebrity, it would certainly be one who rocks the Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans and a classic white T-shirt. Feel the inner peace.

RESHAPE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WITH HOT YOGA. A stronger, toned and more flexible body and an improved state of mind encouraging relaxation, selfacceptance and awareness. “In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body.

Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing that extra protection from the very first poses. Your body burns fat more effectively and you lose inches of shape in a relatively short time”.

Newcomers and experienced students welcome.

Hollywood writer—and rejection expert extraordinaire BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

J

ustin Trevor Winters is a really funny man. The Hollywood storyteller— known in the industry for his dramedy, and by his wife as an “expert bullshitter”—had dreams of starring on the silver screen. “But I quickly learned I was maybe the world’s worst actor,” explains Winters over a late night Sazerac. That realization led him to screenwriting. Today, the writer continues his love-hate relationship with words from both Los Angeles and Phoenix.

A PRODUCT OF THE ’80S Winters was born in December 1980 just outside of Chicago. Even though the family of four, plus their trusty golden retriever, only remained in Illinois until Winters was 3, he grew up with a family that “loved Da Bears, Da Bulls, Da Cubs and Da Blackhawks.” Winters says his life was idyllic after the family moved to Moraga in Northern California in 1984. “It was a small town,” he explains. “As a kid, I of course wanted to get the hell out of Dodge, but looking back I now realize how good I had it.” Following high school, Winters headed for University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) to study film. Although he says the Film & Media program at UCSB is extremely competitive and he is honored to be an alum, he was sold on UCSB “when I found out I could watch movies for four years—in my board shorts—with sand in between my toes.” The four years at UCSB helped Winters fall in love with the film industry. “I was enraptured by the entirety of the industry,” he explains. But during that quest for how to spend the rest of his life in the film industry, he discovered writing. “I’m not sure if I found writing or writing found me,” says Winters, laughing. “We’re in it now, a love-hate relationship to end all love-hate relationships. I love standing upon the wonderfully high peaks of my megalomania, but spend most of my time in the deepest of deep valleys of self-loathing. I love writing, but it’s a very, very, very, very difficult profession where

you deal with rejection on a daily basis… more rejection in a day than most people will experience in a lifetime.”

IN THE BEGINNING As with most people who want to succeed in the film industry, Winters graduated and moved to Los Angeles. His primary goal at that time was to become a screenwriter. “Upon finishing my first featurelength screenplay, I felt I achieved that goal… well, creatively speaking, at least. I soon realized, however, that writing a screenplay was only half the battle and if I wanted to be a working writer, I needed to learn the business side of the industry, as well.” Just about the time he came to that realization, he was hired as an assistant at Innovative Artists Agency, and later also worked for Creative Artists Agency. There, he worked alongside agents, managers, lawyers, investors, producers and studio execs. He also collaborated with actors, directors, screenwriters and authors. The list reads like an Oscar After-Party— Kathryn Bigelow, Stuart Beattie, Peter Bogdanovich, John Cameron Mitchell, Tim Robbins, Brad Pitt, Jon Heder, Joel David Moore. Winters spent his time learning what he calls “the industry as a whole.” At both agencies, “I read scripts, wrote coverage, and recommended potential clients. I gained a vast understanding of the interworkings of the screenwriting trade and the industry as a whole. I also made oatmeal with exactly three banana slices, a dash of raw organic agave, and just the right amount of flaxseed. I ducked out of the way of flying staplers. I worked 16-hours days and weekends. I picked up laundry and babysat latchkey kids. I worked in and survived the physically and emotionally draining trenches with countless other assistants, and made invaluable connections and relationships that I still utilize today.” Winters says this was the most crucial part of getting into the industry. For

someone who wants to be involved in the film industry in any way, they must work within the industry, whether at an agency, production company or studio, because you have to get your foot in the door.

CRAFTING A SCREENWRITING CAREER With more knowledge of the industry under his belt, Winters set out to concentrate full-time on his writing love affair. He says the one thing that his time at the agencies showed him is that, “as a writer, you should never sacrifice the integrity of the story you want to tell, but you sure as hell better be conscious of the fact that at the end of the day, this is a business. And in my case, I believe it was this knowledge that helped me get my very first script optioned and produced.” In fact, Winters now has a variety of products in a variety of stages. Currently, he has three feature dark comedies, four one-hour dramas, two half-hour singlecamera comedies, a comedy panel quiz show, a feature adaptation of a short story, a biopic, a web series, and an animated short in the works. KILLING WINSTON JONES is a feature-length film currently in the final stages of post-production. The film, directed by Joel David Moore, has been Winters’ passion since he came up with the idea in 2005 while reading the Hollywood trades. He read about the death of an actress from the 1950s, but had no idea who she was despite having been a film student his entire adult life. Winters wondered, “How do you leave a legacy that will withstand time?” The movie stars Richard Dreyfuss as Winston Jones (the retired Boys’ PE teacher) who desperately wants to leave a legacy at his once-beloved junior high school. The perfect opportunity comes when the school sets out to build a new gymnasium. The only problem is that the current principle (Tyler Labine) was one of Jones’ former chubby students and hates his former PE teacher. He decides

“I’m optimistic that I’ll be a successful working writer throughout my career.” the gym will be named in memorium. So, the competition is once again on between Jones and his old rival Washington Carver, the Girls’ PE teacher, played by Danny Glover. The two men compete this time, however, to see who can kill himself first, and it turns both men’s families upside down. The movie also stars Danny Masterson, Jon Heder, Aly Michalka, Lesley Ann Brandt, Joely Fisher and Lin Shayne. Winters thought at times the film would never become reality. He says he almost gave up hope when they lost financing for the third time. Little did he know that just 48 hours after that last loss, however, they would get financing. The film is now almost ready for the public. They have had several advanced screenings, and the production company is in talks with distribution companies. The movie should be in theaters later this year.

LIFE IN ARIZONA Winters is married to Dr. Brittany Nicole Winters, a clinical psychologist who works in the psychology department at Federal Correctional Institute Phoenix. When she took the job in Phoenix six months ago, Winters began his commute between sunny Southern California and, in his words, even sunnier Phoenix. Winters and his wife plan to put roots in Arizona and call the Valley of the Sun home. Right now, Winters and his wife share their home with a Cavalier King Charles named Hamilton Van Pelt (think Linus and Lucy Van Pelt), love taking long walks, cooking, and whipping up cocktails with the fresh Arizona citrus that grows in their neighbors’ yards. This fall, Winters—who teaches at the UCLA Extension Writers Program—will begin teaching Story Analysis and Writing for TV at Arizona State University. “Teaching is one of the most rewarding endeavors I’ve ever experienced,” says Winters. He also works as a writing consultant for such websites as www.creativescreenwriting.com, www.screencraft. org and www.filmcourage.com, plus consults with personal clients. “I’m a script consultant, a hired gun,” he explains.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Winters encourages those who want careers in film to pursue their dreams. “Never give up. Figure out where your passion lies and develop your craft. You wouldn’t just decide you want to be an Olympic swimmer and win a gold the next day.” But Winters doesn’t discount that it’s a difficult field. “Know what you are getting into. It may be hard to believe, but there are very few things glamorous about this profession. Think about this stat: 60,000 new scripts are registered with the WGA every year. Six hundred of those get made. That’s one percent. If

SOME OF JUSTIN TREVOR WINTERS’ OTHER PROJECTS:

you are going to succeed, you have to be the best of the best, and even better than the best of those best. But get out there, do the work, pursue your passion, follow your dreams. Someone’s gotta do it.” Despite the fact that writing is a “terribly challenging profession,” Winters explains that optimism is what keeps writers going. “I’m optimistic that I’ll be a successful working writer throughout my career.” While his big goal is to work with actors who share his passion for storytelling, Winters does have some lofty screenwriting dreams—because someone’s gotta do it. “I would love to work with Bill Murray. Would love to have Wes Anderson (Royal Tenenbaums) direct one of my films. Would love to co-write a concept with

Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and create a show with Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad).” But his ideal gig? “My dream job would be to cramp Papa Hemingway’s style, buy a typewriter, move to a finca in Cuba, and write on the beach all day while sipping daiquiris. Isn’t that what every writer wants?” Until then, he would be happy to create, write and showrun an original onehour drama or half-hour single-camera comedy. “I’d like to have that show be a wild success and run for a dozen seasons. That would mean working 24/7 for the next decade or so, but it would also be a retirement plan, and once it was over, then I could go buy the typewriter, finca and daiquiris.” JUNE 2015 |

Kenn Francis CHILDREN: Alex, 26, Dane, 25, and Dylan, 19

OCCUPATION: President, Pacific Realty Advisors WHAT DO YOU DO DURING THE DAY? I feel very fortunate to now be in a position that allows me to do the things I WANT to do, instead of things I HAVE to do. I usually start my day at 5:30 or 6 a.m., jump in the hot tub, swim, grab a coffee, and workout. I get done what needs to get done work-wise, and then plot my next adventure with my wife and people I care about. THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A DAD: I learned that kids are on lease to us. We may think they’re our kids, but they’re really not. They are their own individuals. After a brief 18 years or so, the lease is up and you no longer control them. You can’t force them to have a relationship with you, once they’re out on their own. If they don’t want to hang with you anymore, there’s nothing you can do. They now control the relationship. I learned I better not screw it up because I want to spend time with them for years to come. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Fashion style? My kids laughed when I told them I’d be in this issue. If I have any fashion style at all, it only goes to support my LIFESTYLE. Years ago, I moved to buying clothes that reflect whatever activities I’m doing. FAVORITE BRANDS? You may not find them on the fashion runway, but Arc’teryx jackets and pants are hard to beat. Mountain Hardware, Patagonia and Marmot are also great brands. For regular everyday clothing that’s durable and super comfortable, Prana is a great choice. They used to make only rock climbing clothing but now they do all kinds. THE ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN LEARN FROM YOU IS: I hope they learn to find balance, by learning what to hang on to and what to let go of. I hope they learned life is about doing and not having. Their time is best spent with people they really care about, creating amazing memories. I hope they’ve learned to just say “yes” to new opportunities and experiences.

Spa Tips for Men

W

hile some men remain doubtful about a day at the spa, many are discovering the benefits of a day of pampering. Not only does spa time help you relax, but it is an essential part of helping keep your skin healthy and your body in tune. For each of these spas, with your treatment you are entitled to a full day at the spa to use such facilities as the fitness center, resort pools, a sauna, steam rooms and whirlpools. Complete details of the spa facilities are listed on each website. These are a sampling of treatments in Phoenix designed for men—but remember, you can book any of the treatments on the spa menu and your technician will customize it to fit your needs.

Spa Biltmore at the Arizona Biltmore

Spa Biltmore uses a variety of organic and vegan ingredients in its spa products. Two favorite treatments for men are the Magnesium Muscle Ease (45 min.) with body exfoliation, focused massage, and the application of magnesium for relaxation, and the Gentleman’s Facial (60 or 90 min.), which utilizes botanicals and vitamins to treat men’s common skin concerns. 855.689.2878; www.arizonabiltmore.com.

1. Arrive early. Allow at least 20-30 minutes before your appointment time. 2. Turn off your cell phone. Calls—and texts—are taboo at the spa. 3. Shower before your massage. If there is a steam room or whirlpool at the facility, they can be essential in helping you relax. 4. It’s good to be clean-shaven before your facial, but you should not shave within about four hours of your facial. 5. Talk to your therapist when you arrive in the treatment room and explain any pain issues, sensitivities or other concerns. 6. Underwear is optional. Your technician is an expert at draping your body for modesty. Most people find they are much more comfortable without underwear. 7. Don’t forget to tip 15-20 percent, but do be aware that some spas automatically add this amount to your bill.

WHAT LED YOU TO BE A CHEF?

Growing up and cooking Sunday dinners with the family. This was always a time of happiness and great food. I wanted to continue to make people happy, and I found I could do that through food. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COOKING PHILOSOPHY AND STYLE?

My philosophy is cooking with fresh ingredients, exploring innovative techniques, and creating dishes with a regional and modern twist. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MENU AT BISTRO 24?

The menu at Bistro 24 is French with a Southwest flair. Bistro 24 incorporates Southwest ingredients into classic French dishes. DO YOU HAVE ANY MENU FAVORITES?

Two of my favorite dishes are the Steak Au Poivre, a 12 oz. ribeye served with truffle fries and butter poached asparagus. The second is Spaghetti Squash “pasta” with English peas, crispy kale, and shaved Parmesan. ANY COOKING TIP YOU CAN SHARE?

Use fresh ingredients and always have fun cooking. If you aren’t having fun, you aren’t doing it right. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE…

A park ranger. I love to spend time outdoors and go for hikes, exploring new territories. Bistro 24 is located at The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix, 2401 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; 602.468.0700; www.ritzcarlton.com/en/properties/phoenix/default.htm. The restaurant is open through late July.

A WHISKEY LOVER’S DELIGHT

La Chocolat Sazerac is a complex, yet simple cocktail BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

R

eady for a whiskey drink with a twist? Meet Bitter & Twisted’s La Chocolat Sazerac ($11). Made with a generous pour of rye whiskey with a touch of crème de cacao and the addition of Peychaud and Aztec bitters, the mixture is stirred to a crisp chill and then slipped into an Absinthe-rinsed frozen rocks glass, creating a whiskey lover’s delight. “We wanted a drink for the whiskey lovers out there that had the strength they were looking for, but had an interesting twist on it that worked,” explains Ross Simon, the owner of Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour. “This drink has a Mexican mole-inspired chocolate flavor that's dry, not sweet on the finish. It's wonderfully complex for being such a simple cocktail.” Housed inside Phoenix’s historic Luhrs Building (which was the site of the former prohibition headquarters of Arizona!), Bitter & Twisted is a hip, yet unpretentious drinking den and eatery. If this drink doesn’t strike your fancy, flip through the locale’s prolific “book o’ cocktails” to find what does. And in addition to cocktails, there’s a large selection of spirits, craft beers and wines. Hungry? There’s everything from the Green Chili “Mac” to the Ramen “Momo” Burger and Seoul Fried Chicken. 1 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix; 602.340.1924; www.bitterandtwistedaz. com.

he R8 is a beautiful, sculptural, harmonious, enlightened badass feast to the eyes. This is a serious piece of machinery, a masterpiece of computer-enhanced handling and sophisticated all-wheel-drive the engineers in Neckarsulm, Germany call Quattro. If your testosterone levels are running low, any amount of time behind the wheel of Audi’s luscious Lamborghinisourced midengine 525 horsepower V10 engine displacement that rips 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph should restore you to normal levels without intervention of medical supplementals. Yet, with all that power, there’s nothing overly dramatic here, no whiteknuckle moments. The R8 is settled,

sorted, safe and predictable as the tachometer needle revs towards the 8,500-rpm redline, and then BAM!–the S tronic 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission explodes into second gear via paddle shifters in a nano second as you’re rewarded with a shove in the back as the road in the rearview mirror quickly becomes a thing of the past. As I gently back the R8 down through the lower gears, the crackling static of exhaust overrun the V10 barks like the very dogs of hell. Dynamically, the best thing about the R8 is the interplay of the steering and the rear-biased explosive thrust. Kicking it out of a corner you can stand on the loud pedal to kick the tail out and the steering is so quick you have to be asleep to not to catch it. If, however, you’re in some way not paying attention, the stability system will eventually intervene to save your arsch. The R8 looks spectacular—wickedly low and wide with huge side air scoops in back feeding the V10 and rear brakes. There’s massive fender flares overflowing the 19-inch 10 spoke “Y” design alloy wheels surrounded by extremely sticky Continentals (235/35 ZR19’s in front, 235/30 ZR19’s in the rear). Buy tires in bulk. And, it’s also a Spyder, exotic car talk for convertible. The canvas buttress top is a fantastic piece of work that scissors, swinging lever arms, and gyrates kinematic transformer like in and out of place in about 20 seconds, while driving at speeds of up to 30 mph. It stores neatly beneath the phantasmagorical rear deck lid with finned aluminum strakes I swear is lifted right off Iron Man’s protective breastplate. Since the Audi R8 V10 Spyder Quattro was the choice for both Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) and Christian Grey, the sexy drop top has the power to open men’s wallets at will. And so sexy, alluring and fast is this car that it should almost be illegal… Quick, somebody call a cop. Oh wait, one’s already behind you. n 1804 France, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin was left a widow—or veuve in French—at the tender age of 27. Although this was the 19th Century, a time when women were relegated to living in the shadow of their husbands, and off of the fortunes of them, Monsieur Clicquot’s death left Madame Clicquot in control of a company with holdings in banking, wool trading and the Bouzy Vineyards. The daughter of a politician and wildly brilliant in her own right, rather than sell the business and live off of the resulting fortune, the often audacious (for that time) Madame Clicquot secured funding and invested in the research and development of champagne. By 1810, Madame Clicquot created the first-ever recorded vintage of champagne in the region. She is also named as the first-ever creator of Rosè Champagne. In addition, she pioneered riddling, a technique that removes the cloudiness present in champagne, effectively moving champagne itself— not to mention her now-named Veuve Clicquot brand—to the mainstream. Today, Veuve Clicquot still lives by the motto that Madame Clicquot instilled in her winemakers 200 years ago from her own predecessors: “Only one quality, the finest.” In homage to this “Grand Dame of Champagne,” the Veuve Clicquot house developed two unique champagne blends in her honor, both as complex and fresh as Madame Clicquot herself. Among the most beloved and sought-after champagnes in the world, both varietals are strong and full-bodied enough to stand up to a man’s palate, but subtle, seductive and smart enough for a woman’s, as well.

La Grande Dame Brut Awarded 94 points by Wine Spectator magazine and the Silver Medal in the Decanter World Wine Awards, this is Veuve’s prestige cuveè. The incomparable finesse of this champagne is the result of blending eight of the of brand’s traditional Grand Crus: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy,

Verzenay, Avize, Oger, and Le Mesnil sur Oger. Once combined, each barrel is aged for an extended period of time in ancient chalk cellars. It is a blend of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% of Chardonnay, all directly from Champagne, France. Smooth and silky, offering a hint of ripe banana on the nose and bubbly grapefruit on the palate, the full-bodied effervescence is meant as a direct tribute to the Grande Dame herself. La Grande Dame Brut ranges from $179.99-$210 per bottle. It can be found at the Wine Store, AJ’s, BevMo and Total Wine.

La Grande Dame Rosè Noted as the rarest of Veuve Clicquot’s varietals, La Grande Dame Rosè was created by adding 15% Pinot Noir from Madame Clicquot’s Clos Colin vineyard in Bouzy, France to the La Grande Dame 2004 blend. The result—a luminous, coppery pink champagne whose first nose reveals a solid mineral structure with hints of white peach, red currant, and even blueberry. On the palate, the champagne is crisp yet silky, with notes of brioche and cinnamon. La Grande Dame Rosè ranges from $310-$389.99 per bottle. It can be found at the Wine Store, AJ’s, BevMo and Total Wine upon request, as availability is limited.

e’ve all been there before… headed to the airport in a rush to make sure you get there in time for that one- to two-hour window before your flight leaves. You may have left home in a rush, almost certain that you forgot something. Was it your cell phone charger? Toothpaste? You may have left in such a rush that you didn’t have time to get a meal in before you headed out. Before you cringe at the idea of having to stop at some overpriced fast food joint or eat the dreaded sticky sweet cinnamon bun (so bad, but so good!), take a deep breath—Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has recently gotten an intense culinary makeover. Some of your favorite restaurants in town have carved out a delicious spot in the terminal dining arena. So, if you find your stomach rumbling while you ponder if you remembered enough socks, and if you have just a little time before your flight, we’ve got the low-down on the latest and greatest terminal restaurants and their can’t-miss dishes. UPTOWN |

Best Breakfasts—Terminal 4

Barrio Café Best breakfast choice: Chef Silvana has created an empire one delightful dish at a time. Her interpretations of classic Mexican dishes created with French technique are causing a revolution of sorts that is garnering a great deal of attention. One such dish that may confuse the brain (but tantalize your taste buds) at first look is the Crepa de Chorizo. Your crepe is fill with a Longaniza chorizo, sautéed spinach, onion, shallots and garlic. As if that weren’t enough, it’s also topped off with a slightly spicy hollandaise sauce and avocado.

| JUNE 2015

food files portion is as hearty as it gets, and the combination of the chicken and waffles, whether you top them with gravy or syrup, is something you have to experience at least once—though you’re sure to want it again and again.

Chelsea’s Kitchen Best breakfast choice: Eggs Benedict are always a hit, but when you add in a rich buttery crab cake, it takes breakfast to a whole new level. The jumbo lump crab to filler ratio is perfect, and the addition of spinach makes you feel a little better about that buttery velvet hollandaise sauce. Pair it with a mimosa, and it’s the perfect way to start your day. This hometown favorite restaurant is so good and feels so much like a stand-alone restaurant that you just might forget you’re at an airport–so don’t forget to catch your flight!

Blanco Tacos & Tequila Best breakfast choice: You’re in Arizona, and what’s better for a quick breakfast in Arizona than the versatile Breakfast Burrito? It’s perfect, really. It looks good on a dish and is also easily transformed into tasty traveling food. Here, you’ll find five enticing varieties: Machaca & Eggs, Steak & Eggs, Eggs & Mexican Cheese, Bacon & Eggs and Chorizo & Eggs, though I am sure if you are especially nice there may be some room for mixing and matching. All of the burritos come with breakfast potatoes and house salsa. La Grande Orange Best breakfast choice: While yes, they’re known more for their pizza pies, this airport location also serves up satisfying breakfast options. Be warned that the Zuni Burrito might be messy, but it’s worth it. It’s a whole wheat tortilla with tofu “chorizo,“ mushrooms, corn, spinach, potatoes, egg whites and charred tomato salsa. There are also egg dishes, pancakes, and oatmeal. Of course, the restaurant’s cheery bright green chairs offer a visually pleasing way to start your day, as well!

Matt’s Big Breakfast

Olive & Ivy Best breakfast choice: Olive & Ivy creates an atmosphere of ease and convenience in a marketplace setting, as well as a comfortable place to grab a table while you enjoy your meal and peruse the paper before your flight. If you’re looking for something light but filling, try the Yogurt Partait, which is a medley of fresh berries including plump blackberries, blueberries and strawberries with almond granola served over yogurt.

Matt’s Big Breakfast Best breakfast choice: Matt’s Big Breakfast entrée is calling your name. Three cage fresh eggs, thick cut bacon sourced out of Queen Creek, sausage patties, sweet and salty home fries, and a griddle cake are just what you need to get you going. Your eggs will be cooked to order, and your bacon will be thick and perfectly peppery. The griddle cakes arrive massive in size and dotted with sweet cream and a side of real maple syrup. The best part? There are no true price spikes just because you are at the airport—the prices are on par with the restaurant’s Downtown Phoenix location.

Zinc Brasserie Best breakfast choice: Decadent French cuisine at the airport? Yes, it’s true. For breakfast here, try the Zinc Omelet, made with French ham, gruyère, crème fraîche and straw potatoes. Or if you need more carbs to get you through your flight, go for the Zinc Croissant, which is made with a fried egg and gruyère. Why not take a minute and pretend that flight you’re about to take is to Paris instead of Des Moines?

Cowboy Ciao Best breakfast choice: Corned beef hash is a breakfast staple, and Cowboy Ciao has spiced up this traditional dish with its Hardy Hatch Hash & Eggs. The dish comes with red country-style potatoes with Hatch chiles and pastrami spiced shredded short ribs all topped with two over easy eggs. The introduction of the Hatch chiles will really open your eyes and give you a whole new perspective on your day.

Best Breakfasts—Terminal 2

Barrio Avion Best breakfast choice: The breakfast options offered at Chef Silvana’s most recent venture provide that perfect extra kick in the pants you need for an early flight. The most popular option is definitely the Build Your Own Burrito. Opt for items in it such as scrambled eggs, cheese, chorizo, spinach, guacamole, and more. There are also chilaquiles or an eye-opening quesadilla. You’ll find fresh ingredients and perfectly seasoned meats of varying heat levels. With generous portions and great flavors, this is a perfect start to your day of travel.

Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles Best breakfast choice: While Lo-Lo’s has some stellar breakfast options, it’s Lo-Lo’s and you know what you want. Go for the KK’s Special, which has three pieces of Southern-style chicken, two waffles, grits, and two eggs with cheese and onions. The JUNE 2015 |

new in town

I

t’s the oldest new business in town. Coup Des Tartes, the beloved French restaurant forced from its N. 16th Street home in August 2014, has emerged from that upheaval with its cozy charm intact. It’s been almost a year since Phoenix native Ron Pacioni, the owner of Coup Des Tartes, received the harrowing news that the land on which sat his thriving, award-winning restaurant was on a fast path to becoming a car dealership parking lot. All its fun and flirty charm, bistro ambience reminiscent of Roaring ’20s Paris, laughter, warm memories, and the home-away-from-home feel was to be flattened by new landowners. It was doomsday. Fast-forward to May 2015: Pacioni just finished hosting a successful grand re-opening at a new location for Coup Des Tartes—1725 E. Osborn Road, Phoenix; 602.212.1082; www.nicetartes.com—two miles south of the original. In between time, shock and sadness congealed into a fierce determination for Pacioni and his supporters to soldier on. Pacioni’s father, Ray, recommended an in-house crowdfunding campaign that raised almost $500,000 to help fund the new Coup—a gutsy effort that makes the “coup” in Coup Des Tartes ring true.

NEW DIGS A COUP FOR COUP DES TARTES Once closed, the restaurant now has a new location BY MIKE SAUCIER

Now, Pacioni and the 12 employees he brought over from the original Coup will get to reincarnate the ambience which Coup customers loved on 16th Street. The new Coup is a historic 1920s Tudor Revival bungalow duplex—an adaptive reuse project of a 1922 single family home conjoined in the 1970s and turned into a doctor’s office. The symbolism cannot be missed: a place that was once used to heal people is reincarnated as a place for a brief healing of the soul (wine, fine French dining, and a charming setting can do that). The new Coup boasts intimate dining rooms, a brick dining patio, and a garden space that will play host to wine tastings, UPTOWN |

fine spirits-tasting parties, happy hours with music, and starlit concerts. It was critical to connect back to the original Coup, Pacioni says. The new Coup has the old Coup service and sensibilities, of course, but Pacioni also decided to bring some of the old Coup to incorporate into the E. Osborn locale, including a few rescued fixtures and salvaged flooring (which he installed as a bar top). “For the people who joined us before, it’s like they never left,” Pacioni says. For the executive chef, Jose Hernandez, the new environs are a drastic change. Pacioni said the kitchen where Hernandez creates his French-inspired, fresh, farm-to-table cuisine has gone from 250 square feet at the old Coup to 800 at the new Coup. Pacioni says he believes in intimate dining and acknowledging the choice diners have made. “I believe in honoring your time,” he says. “I think that the most precious gift we have in our lives is time. Each one of us has only so much time on this planet… so when you go to a restaurant and a client gives you two hours of their time, we need to respect that. And we take that very seriously here, to make that an awesome experience for our clients on all levels.”
