Though I’m not a mom myself, it seems from the outside looking in that balancing motherhood and fashion can be tough. Many moms are juggling full-time careers, multiple children, philanthropy commitments and more – not to mention spending time with their children, getting them ready and taking them to school and afternoon activities. We spoke to eight women (including our cover model, Good Morning Arizona’s April Warnecke) about their style as moms and they shared some of their favorite stores, must-have items and secrets to staying chic on page 29. Speaking of Mom, it’s our family tradition to go to Postino on Mother’s Day – it’s my mom’s favorite (who can resist that bruschetta?). Sexual Harassment and Discrimination in the Workplace: The Benefits of Employers Hiring a Neutral Investigator When employees complain of misconduct, such as sexual harassment or discrimination, these claims must be investigated and taken seriously. Federal law and Arizona law creates high expectations for employers to investigate claims of misconduct against protected classes in the workplace in a thorough, efficient and impartial manner. Hiring a neutral investigator is one of the best ways an Arizona employer can make sure that these high standards are met.

Credibility Is Bolstered and Trust Is Earned

Part of how employers earn trust from the public and employees alike is by showing that problems are taken seriously. Employers who need to investigate workplace misconduct can show they value truth over self-protection by choosing a neutral investigator. This earns the trust of employees as well because third-party investigators have a clear goal from the outset of the investigation to its conclusion. Specifically, the investigator will collect facts and evidence to get to the truth of any and all complaints. This process includes conducting witness interviews, collecting documents and recordings, and following up on specific details and allegations. If an internal investigator or Human Resources conducts an investigation and interviews witnesses, these witnesses may have concerns about disclosing specifics or may feel they have already complained internally and nothing was resolved or they faced retaliation.

Internal Conflicts Can Be Avoided If Litigation Becomes Necessary

Suppose an employer is facing allegations of workplace retaliation against an employee who came forward with a workplace discrimination claim. These types of complaints regularly include claims against Human Resources. Naturally, the employer will want to defend themselves against this accusation. If the organization relied on an internal investigation, the integrity of the investigation could be called into doubt.

A Neutral Investigator Is a Necessary Safeguard When Accusations Are Publicized

It is wise for employers to keep workplace misconduct investigations and the evidence confidential, whenever possible. Accusations can, however, eventually become public for a wide array of reasons. If an investigation or accusations of misconduct are publicized or are known throughout company departments, confidentiality is no longer an option. Employers will improve public perceptions and show that they value the honest pursuit of investigative truth by utilizing a third-party investigator for misconduct claims that have become widely known. Pulse UP CLOSE Ibaline was born in Morocco where women experience oppression and abuse. Her mother was put into an arranged marriage at the age of 14. “She didn’t know anything about independence or empowerment,” Ibaline says. “She thought she should be happy to have a husband, not question him, stay home and cook, clean and raise children, and that was that.” After more than a decade, the marriage ended. With no money, schooling or hope, Ibaline’s mother returned to her own father with her four children and became suicidal and depressed. “It’s a Muslim country. If your husband says you’re getting divorced and kicks you out, you have no say,” Ibaline adds. Her mother’s sister became a beacon of hope and Ibaline’s mother took the family to live with her sister in France. Soon after, Ibaline’s father took all of her siblings, leaving Ibaline as an infant in France with her mother. Although not an ideal family situation, Ibaline looks at the positive side, saying it gave her an opportunity to grow up in Europe and get an education. She admires her mother for being strong and continuing to fight to get her children back. Together, they eventually moved to Belgium. “In Belgium my mom got remarried, went to school, learned to speak French and got her driver’s license,” she explains. “I saw a woman who had found her power and was fighting… and she came from nothing in the mountains of Morocco.” Ibaline never wanted to be in the position of her mother, yet admired her tenacity in learning and making a better life for herself, and ultimately getting her children back. Ibaline moved to Brussels and away from her family at the age of 17. “I studied communications at the university,” she explains. “I got my first job, apartment and car, but I had ambition and wanted to move to New York.” At 20, Ibaline moved to Connecticut to work as an au pair where she had a terrible experience. She was fired, but not wanting to return to Europe, she moved to New York. She learned English and eventually gained U.S. citizenship. “I was never afraid and I was very excited,” she adds. “I realized I was copying everything my mom had done – moving to a new country, struggling and learning a new language.” She earned certifications in event management, life coaching and business coaching and a degree in business management in New York and moved to Arizona in 2016 with a man she was seeing. “That relationship didn’t work out,” she explains. “But I think if it wasn’t for that relationship, I would not be here in Arizona making a difference. I realize that I’m making an impact in women’s lives.” As a life coach, Ibaline shares her life’s trials and tribulations transparently so others can learn from her experiences. She understands firsthand that once someone embraces and uses their power, they can bring forth a new set of circumstances. She offers a complimentary 30-minute coaching session to those interested in working with her, or she has 90-minute empowerment, and three-month personal or business coaching sessions. Ibaline founded S.M.A.R.T. Women, INC. to educate and

But, there is still one lesson Lisa Davey is set on teaching kids before next school year or college – financial literacy. “Talking to kids about money is about as comfortable as talking to them about the birds and bees,” Davey says. “But, without basic lessons in school and at home about finances, we are putting them out there in the world at a great disadvantage.” As such, when she was promoted in 2017 to vice president at Washington Federal Arizona, Davey took on the bank’s statewide financial literacy initiatives, both for younger children and high school kids. “For kids as young as kindergarten and then up through eighth grade, we have a program free to every elementary and middle school across Arizona called Save at School,” she explains. “Through it, we come in and actually take over their classes on regular ‘bank days’ to teach them basics about money and savings.” The twice-monthly program helps children understand where money actually comes from – aka, it does not grow on trees – as well as how to make a budget. Her team even works with kids (with parents’ permission, of course) to start their first savings accounts, matching their first $5. “Then, once they hit high school, we take a deeper dive with our formal Washington Federal Financial Scholars program, an online curriculum available at no cost to parents or schools using simulations, avatars and gaming to bring complex financial concepts to life,” Davey says. This program tackles everything from credit cards and student loans to 401(k)s and taxes. “We track the progress of every student and provide those who complete the course with a Certification in Financial Literacy diploma, which can be use on college applications and resumes,” Davey explains. The program – which launched in the greater-Uptown area in 2013 and is currently at eight schools across Arizona – has graduated more than 1,500 students. Davey hopes to double this number and expand to at least a dozen more schools in the near future.

Local flight attendant debuts an unforgettable book following her return to the world of dating

Faking the O is the funny and honest debut book by flight attendant Jenna Leigh that incorporates stories of divorce, heartbreak and the crazy world of dating in the 21st century. As salaciously suggestive as the title might be, the book (www.fakingtheo.com) is more of a compilation of insightful stories. It chronicles some of Leigh’s dating challenges as she reentered the world of dating as a single mom after having been married for 17 years. Now on the singles scene for four years, Leigh shares her experiences in returning to the dating pool in an era of texting, sexting and social networking. “After I got divorced and tried to get back into the dating world after not dating for 20 years, I discovered it’s not the same at all,” Leigh explains. The flight attendant of 22 years unearthed a kind of pattern while dating. “It seems like as I got back into dating, there were different stereotypical kinds of people I was meeting along the way,” Leigh says. “You might meet ‘the player,’ ‘the rebound’ or ‘the friend who wants to be more.’ Each of those is a blurb or a story in the book.” The book also explores how her job presents unique scheduling challenges. Juggling single motherhood and dating on top of constantly flying, and finding time to date becomes a three-ring circus. “They didn’t understand the schedule,” says Leigh of some past dates. “I’d say, ‘I might be available Tuesday between 2 and 5 p.m.,’ or next Wednesday will work. They’d say, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’” She also encountered trust issues as her job takes her elsewhere, constantly. “But that does give me opportunity to meet different people,” she says of her career. Leigh says she hopes her humorous book serves as a navigation tool for the dating world. “Everyone wants to know, ‘How do I find Mr. Right?,’” she finishes. “There’s not one clear cut answer, but enjoy the process as it is happening. You’re going to meet some duds. But, you’ll meet some nice people that might not be for you, but you’ll be glad they came into your life.”

Clients of Salon Red’s owner, Anthony Kyhn, don’t come to him because he’s a hair stylist, they come to him because he can make all their wildest hair dreams come true. Indeed, if 2018 is the year of the stylist (as Vogue claims), it’s men like Kyhn that truly stand out. “From a young age, I loved the way that changing a person’s hair could change their look, their confidence, and ultimately their outlook on life,” Kyhn says. “The pure delight on a customer’s face when I make their hair hopes and dreams come true is priceless.” The self-proclaimed “hair chameleon” has been a hairstylist for the past decade and loves changing up his own style as much as his clients’ – he may be rocking a man bun one day and a short crew cut the next. “My guilty fashion pleasure is a pastel pink hat that I wear when I’m rushing into a full day of appointments,” he says. “Which is ironic because one of my favorite sayings is, ‘hair is the one accessory you can never take off.’ It’s always there and it’s so important for it to be a window into who you are.” Kyhn’s fun personal style flows from his head to his toes, and you can often find him wearing bold bright patterns or fun pastels.

What fashion brand can you not live without? Ben Sherman shoes are my go-to with every outfit and an amazing accessory for my profession. The shoes are fashionable, have built-in padding, are incredibly comfortable and have amazing style. It’s almost embarrassing how many pairs are currently sitting in my closet. What hair product is hot right now? L’Anza is the only hair care line we currently carry at Salon Red. Sarah Quinn is the owner and medical director of Arcadia Wellness Center, which just celebrated its four-year anniversary. Though she balances her boutique medical practice with a casual, yet sophisticated look, Quinn’s style remains flexible to her daily tasks at hand. “I definitely want to portray what I’m selling,” Quinn says. “Some days I have networking meetings or I have days where I need to portray a professional look.” Other days, when Quinn is conducting trainings and doing injections, you’ll find the professional wearing scrubs. At home, her closet fits her busy lifestyle. With two little kids in tow, she must seamlessly switch gears from her work wardrobe to flow with the remainder of her day. Thought she may never be “off duty,” balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, Quinn finds solace in date nights with her husband, where she slips on a simple black dress. When she wants an extra punch in her wardrobe, she’ll spice her ensemble up with accessories. “With a good luxury accessory, you can get away with anything. I like Gucci for sunglasses and Chanel for handbags. I am also loving AD and Daughters brand shoes right now,” she explains.

Celebrity style icons: I love Kate Middleton’s style because it is classic and sophisticated. I also admire Amal Clooney. She is a fashionable, and she is a mom, wife and successful businesswoman. Where do you shop? I shop anywhere from Target to Ann Taylor. How do you help your patients uncover their beauty? We find someone’s inner beauty by listening to them! I had been working in a big practice seeing 40 to 50 patients a day, almost a cattle call situation. That’s not the way I wanted to practice medicine. I opened Arcadia Wellness Center and see patients the way I need to see them, so I can provide the best care. We focus on aesthetics and bioidentical hormones.

What’s a typical day like for you? I wake up at 2:30 a.m. and drink lots of coffee, work on the forecast for the day, do my own hair and makeup, present my weather forecast for Good Morning Arizona (GMAZ) from 5 to 10 a.m., then meet with our team to plan the next day’s show. I leave work around lunchtime and try to squeeze in a workout before picking up the kids from school. Then we have homework time, go to Little League games, have dinner, then fall over (and asleep) around 8 p.m. Best thing about being a mom: Watching my boys become each other’s best friends. They get along so well and their relationship with each other blows me away. It’s so amazing and sweet to watch. Favorite family activities: Hiking, riding bikes and taking road trips. Describe your style: Classic and relaxed. Go-to look: For work, a bright-colored, solid sheath dress. You don’t want any patterns or prints that look too busy in front of the maps and weather graphics. Outside of work, jeans and a T-shirt. Must-have item: My planner and my watch. I feel lost without them. Top fashion indulgences: I probably spend more money on shoes than anything else. Cole Haan has become my favorite for being on my feet for five hours straight for GMAZ. I’ve had four foot surgeries, so if I want to wear heels – and I do – they need to be especially comfy. Favorite brands: For work, I like Eliza J, Antonio Melani and Kendra Scott. After work, it’s Madewell and Lululemon. Celebrity mom fashion icon: Reese Witherspoon. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? Staying organized. I also love getting some help from services like Trunk Club. I have a stylist through the service that sends me work dresses and clothes for outside of work, too. It’s very convenient for busy moms! Style advice for your children: Be yourself and don’t worry about what other people are wearing or thinking too much. And always accessorize with sunscreen!

What’s a typical day like for you? My days are anything but typical. My day starts at 6 a.m. and usually ends around 10 or 11 p.m. In those hours of the day, I drop the kids off at school, manage to hit the gym, plan out dinner, meet a few clients for my fashion design company (Nazila Couture), work on my collections and custom orders, and help the kids with homework and after-school activities. After dinner, I work for another two or three hours before bed. Best thing about being a mom: There is a sudden harmony between the mom and child, a feeling of fulfillment and purpose. There is this connection and exchange of unconditional love that is hard to explain. Favorite family activities: Having openended conversations at the end of the day about our day. I look forward to that the most! Describe your style: Modern tribal and boho chic. Go-to look: Day dresses with Oxford shoes. Must-have item: A slim belt that accentuates my waist and makes the outfit look more polished. Top fashion indulgences: Shoes by Stella McCartney. I have learned to declutter my closet on a regular basis; I keep what I know I will wear and that makes it easy to choose. A great pair of shoes can make any outfit look better. How does being a mom influence your style? I stick to silhouettes that work for my shape, and choose quality over quantity and easy-to-care-for fabrics. Any style tips for other moms? Opt for properly fitted clothes to conform to your shape and accentuate your focal points according to your shape. Style advice for your children: They are mostly in school uniforms so they have a minimalistic approach to clothes and I like that. Wear what you like as long as it’s clean.

What’s a typical day like for you? Since leaving my medical sales job three years ago, I’ve traded conference calls for play dates, volunteer work, and being CEO of our household. Now with both of my kids attending preschool, I get to play a little more tennis and invest in activities that keep me balanced. Best thing about being a mom: They’ve made me a better person by teaching me to slow down, appreciate the little joys in life, and be the best possible version of myself. I know that they’re watching me every day, and I don’t want to let them down. Favorite family activities: Swimming, playing games and going to movies. Describe your style: Casual with some edge. Go-to look: I loooove the athleisure trend. A fun pair of brightly colored leggings, sneakers, and a sexy T-shirt is what you’ll find me in most mornings. I also like looks that easily transfer from day to night such as sundresses, distressed denim and coated leggings. Must-have item: My Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. I am never without them! Top fashion indulgences: A great pair of stilettos. If I am heading out for the evening, I’ll often pair a casual tee with distressed denim and sky-high stilettos. I keep it simple. I try not to spend too much time in front of the mirror and instead wear what makes me feel good. I am always on the go, and, most days, my style reflects my active lifestyle. How does being a mom influence your style? I like to look my best without being overly consumed with my appearance. It’s something I have thought about a lot while raising a daughter. I definitely spend a lot less time getting ready these days! Any style tips for other moms? Dress in whatever makes you feel confident. Style advice for your children: If you feel good, you will look good.

What’s a typical day like for you? Busy! I work for Foundation Medicine, a biotech company with a mission of transforming cancer care. I travel quite a bit for work and am on calls and webinars constantly. Between that and juggling a home life, you can say each day is met with ruthless prioritization. Best thing about being a mom: Being told “you are my most favorite person in the WHOLE world!” I mean … how can you possibly top that? Favorite family activities: Camille is my little girly girl. We love doing mani-pedis, art projects and movie night. We are also a very active family, so when the weather is nice, we enjoy the park, going on bike rides, and dining alfresco. Describe your style: Equal parts classic, edgy and glam. Go-to look: Boyfriend jeans and a V-neck T-shirt tucked in the front with cute sandals or slip-on sneakers. If it’s chilly out, top that with a leather jacket or green army jacket. Must-have item: A “fits you like a glove” LBD. Favorite brands: My favorite bags are from Louis Vuitton in the classic monogram or Damier print. Primarily because it’s what I consider to be “utilitarian luxury.” I buy pieces to love and wear, so I want things that don’t need to be babied. Like many things in my life, it’s all about maximizing efficiencies. I work from home, so most days you can find me very casual with about 10 percent effort. However, I can pull it together for events or fun nights out with 90 percent effort. Also, I don’t have a lot of time to shop, so I tap into personal shopping services like Trunk Club to do the legwork. How does being a mom influence your style? I put a lot more emphasis on comfort, quality and versatility. Style advice for Camille: One, clothing is all about self-expression. Wear what you want, when you want, and how you want it. And two, a girl’s best accessory is a pretty smile, so show them pearly whites!

What’s a typical day like for you? An early wake-up call by my youngest, Adelynn, then off to school drop-off. And I always begin my day with a morning workout. I am then either in various philanthropy meetings or working on my current startup. Nights are always family time, movies or swimming! Best thing about being a mom: Every day helps me become a better person. It has allowed me to not sweat the small things, realizing each day brings new energy and light because of the joy my kids bring. Describe your style: Casual, sophisticated, dramatic and chic. Go-to look: You can usually find me in a Nordstrom-bought sundress with a pair of Marc Fisher or Michael Kors wedges and Kendra Scott earrings. Must-have item: My So Kate Christian Louboutin heels in nude. I can wear them casual with jeans and a T-shirt or dress them up with a cocktail dress for a night out. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Chrissy Teigen has been my inspiration for pregnancy outfits. But when I’m not pregnant, Jessica Alba, Miranda Kerr, Blake Lively and Heidi Klum. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? I think the balance is all about how you feel and being confident in yourself. I enjoy getting dolled up, but a messy bun, jean shorts and a V-neck make me feel just as put together and makes it easy to interact with my babies. How does being a mom influence your style? I have a 16-year-old who watches what I wear as an influence for her own wardrobe, and a 3-year-old who will soon do the same. I want them both to see me as a positive female influence for their fashion choices and find their own individuality in their style. Any style tips for other moms? Confidence is key. Be you, and wear what makes you feel happy. Style advice for your children: Don’t follow the crowd. Find the pieces that speak to you and wear them with confidence. I want my girls to know they are beautiful no matter what brand, designer or look they choose to wear. And advice for my son … always compliment your mother.

What’s a typical day like for you? I co-own a promotional products company, B2B Promotional Group, and, like any working mom, I try and get a jump-start on the day, so I get up before my kids (or at least try), check emails, pack lunch, and get dressed. Breakfast for kids, coffee for me, and I am off to get Hadleigh to school. My business is growing, so there’s a lot of juggling, just as there is with motherhood. Best thing about being a mom: I love watching them learn something new and how proud they are of themselves when they accomplish it. My children inspire me every day to do my best, to learn, to be more patient, and to be grateful for the many gifts this life has given me. Describe your style: Comfortable and casual. Go-to look: Jeans, a great pair of sneakers, and a nice fitting T-shirt is my go-to, but I enjoy changing it up when I have meetings or events where I get to be “fancy,” as my daughters say. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Jessica Alba, who has proven that a woman can be a great mom, fashionable and an entrepreneur. And I think Kristin Cavallari has a good mix of comfortable, sophisticated and sexy style. Favorite brands: Rag & Bone, Zara, Vince, Lululemon, Alo Yoga and Frame Denim. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? It’s so easy to lose your sense of style because looking after yourself is often last on the list. But it is important to make sure you feel good about what you’re wearing. I may not have an entire morning devoted to getting myself ready, but I know the key pieces that make me feel good and I stick to those. How does being a mom influence your style? I think motherhood and fashion in general have shifted my look to be more casual. Designers have made it easier for moms to be both comfortable and stylish. Overall, a lot of my favorite brands have geared their lines toward a more relaxed look, so you can feel good and be on-trend. It’s a great time to be a mom in the fashion world! Any style tips for other moms? Get your kids dressed first – they take the longest. Style advice for your children: You’re never fully dressed without a smile.

What’s a typical day like for you? I get up at 5:45 a.m. so I have time to get a few things accomplished before I wake up my kids. After dropping them off at school, I head to a workout. As the owner of a personal/wardrobe styling business, Celina Style, every day is different and might include a closet edit, personal shopping, or working on a client’s seasonal makeover. At 3:10 p.m., it’s time to pick up the kids and head to baseball, soccer or karate followed by homework, dinner, reading and bedtime. Once the kids are tucked in, I finish up some work. Best thing about being a mom: Watching these little reflections of you develop into their own vibrant personalities. Favorite family activities: We love outdoor activities. If we’re not at baseball or soccer, we’re probably riding our bikes, barbecuing, or spending time with friends. In the summertime, we’re out of town or in the pool! There are even those days when we wake up on a lazy Saturday and spend the day in our pajamas baking, playing board games, watching movies, and ordering take out. Those are the best! Describe your style: I love mixing it up! I’d describe my style as chic, classy, feminine and creative with a little edge. Go-to look: All-white or all-black with a pop of color, which is usually my favorite gold cuff or turquoise pieces. Must-have item: My turquoise from Santa Fe, New Mexico. I drop Theo off at kindergarten, work with my business (also named Elina Casell) as a clothing designer, take the kiddos to different activities, and I work with charities. Their dad plays hockey, so we also go to hockey games. No two days are the same. Best thing about being a mom: The unconditional love that you get from the kids and how honest and pure they are. Favorite family activities: With the oldest, I like to just watch movies, play mini golf or do puzzles. With the little one, it’s just being around him. Snuggle time is my favorite with both. Describe your style: I would describe it as sexy and sophisticated – it’s a fine mix of edgy and soft. I do like to keep it simple, and I think I have a little bit of a rocker chick in me. I also enjoy very feminine clothing, depending on my mood and where I’m going, but my everyday style is a little more edgy. Go-to look: A great pair of skinny jeans with a basic top, leather jacket and heels. Top fashion indulgences: Chanel purses and designer shoes. You come a long way with a great pair of fitted skinny jeans, a nice T-shirt, and a cool pair of sunglasses. Style advice for your children: Don’t overthink anything or over style. Especially when it comes to guys, I think that keeping it simple is the best way.

Ballet Arizona is gearing up for the performance of a lifetime as the company debuts the world premiere of Ib Andersen’s Eroica. Set in the beauty of the Arizona desert at Desert Botanical Gardens, the show will be performed alfresco from May 15 to June 2, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 8 p.m. nightly. Set to Beethoven’s Third Symphony, which ushered in a new era of music and changed perspectives with its technical and emotional complexity, the show will speak directly to the soul. The Nikon Small World Exhibit kicked off at Arizona Science Center for a limited time. Through July 20, take in the wonder of 20 prize-winning photomicrographs – photographs of microscopic objects. Mother’s Day weekend is the perfect time to celebrate women who are not only excelling at their roles as moms, but also as leaders in the Phoenix community, from all cultures and backgrounds. Valle del Sol does just that at their annual Mom of the Year Breakfast. Each year, Valle del Sol receives nominations by the public to award standout moms and then a selection committee looks at the nominations and makes recommendations based on a few key criteria. First, they look at whether the woman is demonstrating a positive role as a mom, and serving as a role model. Second, the committee considers her service to the community – she must show significant service to others in the nonprofit arena by way of service on a board, or through

philanthropic and volunteerism activities. “The nomination form asks for specific examples of a history of service. All of our honorees this year excelled in their bodies of work,” explains Angela Florez, chief development officer of Valle del Sol. Typically the organization gives out four awards each year, but 2018’s sixth annual event will honor six women with five awards for the first time ever. The fifth award will be shared by two moms and co-honorees, Karen Bailey of One Community and Nelda Majors. “They are a couple of more than 60 years and adopted their daughters,” Florez elaborates on the two women, best known as the first gay couple to receive their marriage license in Arizona following the legalization of same-sex marriage.

In addition to Bailey and Majors, the honorees for the year include Marisue Garganta of Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Heidi Jannenga of WebPT, Siman Qaasim of Children’s Action Alliance, and Alessandra Soler of ACLU of Arizona. The Navigator was the original large luxury SUV, first coming on the scene back in 1989. Over time, its glory faded as Land Rover, Lexus, Cadillac and others moved decidedly upscale. But with a complete redesign for 2018 – its first in more than a decade – Navigator leapfrogs competitors and reclaims its spot at the top of the segment with gorgeous new styling, advanced technology, and countless best-in-class notables. Navigator is a massive SUV with a spacious third row that even adults won’t complain about. It is available in both regular and extended wheelbase configurations (the extended version adds 12 additional inches behind the third row). The luxe interior is arguably the best I’ve seen in any vehicle at any price. It’s a complete knockout – upscale with a bit of a midcentury modern look. Build quality and materials are impeccable, with rich surfaces of leather, wood and suede. Even the knobs are trimmed in chrome as are the stylish metal audio speaker grilles. The seats are incredibly comfortable and the front seats are fully articulating, with second and third rows that recline. Perfect Position 30-way adjustable seats are also available.

The digital instrument panel is presented on a floating 12-inch LED screen. You can use it to configure the vehicle including seats, pedals, mirrors, steering wheel, audio presets, and climate. Settings can be linked to individual key fobs. In addition, there are physical dials and buttons for the most common functions, and the transmission is now push-button, residing just below the center air vents. The new Navigator was named the North American SUV of the Year, and it’s easy to see that it is well ahead of its closest competitors. Havasupai Falls: For a more up-close-and-personal Grand Canyon experience, Havasupai Falls is your prize after a rugged 10-mile hike into the canyon. But it’s worth it – at the end of the journey, for which reservations are required and camping is limited due to demand, enjoy the most gorgeous blue-green water (and waterfalls) and one of the most truly unique “pool days” on the planet. Tombstone: This (infamous) area in Southern Arizona is so iconic that the entire city itself is a Registered Historic National Landmark. It’s hard not to be transported back to the days of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday while walking the same streets they did at the height of the wildest days of the West, especially if you make a stop at the one and only O.K. Corral. Bisbee: Recently named one of Frommer’s’ Best Places to Go in 2018, this former mining town is now known for its thriving arts scene as well as its preservation of Arizona’s tenure as a territory and as the premiere mining destination in the U.S. Don’t miss the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, which is the first rural affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, or the Queen Mine Tour, a 75-minute journey 1,500 feet underground (hard hat, headlamp and all) with former miners to learn first-hand about mining days, techniques and dangers. Antelope Canyon: Just west of Page, Arizona, about four hours from the Valley, Antelope Canyon is the most photographed and visited slot canyon in the country. It has only been open to visitors for 20 years and features two options: Upper Antelope, known for the dramatic beams of light that shine through the rocks within the canyon, and Lower Antelope, which features smaller beams but is less frequented by throngs of tourists due to the climbing required to access it.

Sip Willcox Wine Country: The Willcox region, located just one hour east of Tucson, grows nearly 75 percent of the state’s wine grapes. It’s also the source of the most highly rated Arizona wines by Wine Spectator, with 45 wines rated a score of 88 to 90 over the past five years. There is no shortage of places to sip, with both a historic downtown filled with several tasting rooms within walking distance from one another, and a rustic vineyard loop where guests can visit the actual vineyards and see the winemakers in action. Flagstaff’s Brewery Scene: Flagstaff is home to a craft brewery boom so big that, earlier this year, Arizona Gov. Woody’s Macayo boasts marvelous margarita flights

In 1946, high school sweethearts Woody and Victoria Johnson founded a little Mexican joint in Phoenix called Woody’s El Nido. By 1952, the lovebirds opened their first Macayo’s in a massive 22,000-squarefoot building famously located on Central Avenue. Over the past 70-plus years, the Macayo’s brand became amongst the most popular family owned restaurant chains in the Valley. “In 2017, the original, massive Macayo’s closed its doors in order to move across the street and get back to its roots,” says Ashley Negron, director of marketing and brand management for the company. “Now open in a cozy spot in Central Phoenix just over 5,000-square-feet and named Woody’s Macayo in homage to its original founders, we are focused on serving up old favorites and offering some new twists to both our food and drink.” Among the brightest of Woody’s enhancements is its margarita flight ($9.99). Served on a custom-made wooden board, each flight features the choice of four signature margaritas, each served in a five-ounce glass that fits into the board. “On a research trip to Mexico, we came across several mimosa flights at local haunts and wanted to apply the concept to the margarita,” explains Negron, whose team came up with eight total flavor profiles once they put pen to paper. Each flavor mixture is made from fresh fruit and hand-crafted syrups then combined with a regularly revolving house tequila. “We offer apple, peach, mango, strawberry, raspberry, prickly pear margaritas as well as a wildberry option made from strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, and then – of course – our traditional,” Negron says. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? As soon as I started my first restaurant job I knew it was what I wanted to do for a long time. I wasn’t necessarily the best, but I was excited to be dicing potatoes. I think that says something. If you weren’t a chef, you’d probably be… I would most likely be an English teacher. I was studying to become one when I got my first part-time job in a restaurant. When you’re not cooking, where would we find you? Two places in Phoenix: My favorite bar, Shadys, or Houstons/Hillstone. What food is your guilty pleasure? Still crave packaged Maruchan Ramen chicken flavor all the time. Favorite food memory: I still think about this often. I was around 6 and my dad rented a cabin up north during the winter. One morning, I was still lying in bed and my dad started making breakfast, and I could smell every single aspect of what he was making as he cooked. The smell of bacon, eggs cooking in the fat, cheese crisping on the side of the pan, a flour tortilla being warmed. I just laid there and took it all in. To this day I can still smell and taste that morning. What is your approach in the kitchen? Respect the food, and respect each other. Don’t think your job is more important than anyone else’s. Any person in a kitchen is no one without their team. How did you wind up at Tratto? [Owner] Chris Bianco has been one of my family friends since I was very young. Once the flavor sinks in, it’s roasted in the restaurant’s specialty Josper charcoal oven, an elegant combination of a grill and oven that burns clean and only gives a light char to protein, locking in the juiciness and delicate flavors. Pomelo at the Orchard A fresh baguette is grilled and used as the base of this dish. The Salmon Hayek Salmon Poke

J’s Kaiyo Sushi + Bar Poke seems to be popping up everywhere around the Valley, but J’s Kaiyo gets the nod for their salmon poke given it’s delivered fresh each day. Served raw, the salmon is joined by sesame soy as well as avocado, scallions, cucumbers and red onions to add layers of texture, flavor and acidity. SAY HELLO TO TACO CHELO Roosevelt Row’s new Mexican eatery brings art, food and drinks to the area

Taco Chelo, the newest addition to Roosevelt Row’s food and arts scene, is now open. The concept comes from the dream team of chef Suny Satana of St. Francis; Aaron Chamberlin, who founded Phoenix Public Market as well as St. Francis; and Gennaro Garcia, an acclaimed artist who is also one of co-founders of the Calle 16 mural project in Phoenix. This is the group’s second project after the successful opening of Tempe Public Market Café in January. The cozy space is 1,000 square feet plus an additional 300-square-foot wraparound patio with great views of Downtown Phoenix. “Our lively, colorful restaurant and bar serves up flame-cooked tacos wrapped in hand-pressed tortillas, hearty sides, refreshing tequila and mezcal cocktails and more,” says Chamberlin, whose family history in the restaurant business dates back to the 1930s. “While tacos are the undeniable focus of Taco Chelo’s menu, chef Suny – a native of Mexico – will also serve up a revolving list of carefully crafted sides inspired from his own mother’s recipes.” According to Chamberlin, these delicacies include chicharrones, chips and

guacamole, and frijoles a la charra, which are pinto beans stewed with bacon and pico de gallo. The straightforward menu also boasts equally straightforward pricing with tacos under $5, salad for just $6 and most other items a la cart for less than $6. As for the cocktail side of the menu, standouts include the Mezcal Paloma ($8) featuring Agave de Cortez Mezcal, lime, ginger, Peychauds Bitters and grapefruit soda as well as Sangria ($7), which is red wine-based and has brandy, seasonal fruits and an infusion of fresh-squeezed fruit juices. There are also nearly a dozen Mexican, local and regional beers as well as red, white and rosé wines by the bottle and glass, including Arizona’s own Provisioner brand out of Camp Verde. Emphasizing art as well as fine Mexican food, the works adorning the space, including custom-made installations from Mexico as well as hand-designed tile and brick accents, come directly from Garcia. In addition to his work with Calle 16, he has participated in more than 60 exhibits in the last four years, including six solo shows. In 2015, Garcia was the Heard Museum’s Signature Artist at the annual El Mercado de las Artistes, and he was also named as a finalist in Martha Stewart’s Made in America contest for his Made by Hand ceramic collection. “What we worked to create here is an experience that caters to all senses,” Garcia explains. “I see this restaurant project as an ongoing art installation and a collaboration of the visual and culinary arts.” And for those wondering about the name, Taco Chelo is an homage Satana’s own mother Consuelo, whose nickname is “Chelo.” Taco Chelo is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Taco Chelo, 501 E.
