WOMEN’S HEALTH Gino Tutera MD FACOG, SottoPelle Medical Director answers your questions. What does Dr. Tutera offer to his other patients? He offers a scientific method of natural bioidentical hormone therapy that cannot be achieved with mass-produced synthetics. Dr. Tutera pioneered an innovative web-based BioCalc® system that provides each patient with a precisely dosed hormone pellet based on their individual needs and slipped under the skin for the maximum effectiveness. The SottoPelle® method eliminates the risks associated with most synthetic hormones. While often imitated but never duplicated, SottoPelle® remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its groundbreaking science and proprietary method that puts patients and their health first above everything else. Why would patients come to SottoPelle® over other places that offer similar treatments? SottoPelle® is the only precision-based hormone therapy with an individualized approach. Most doctors prescribe hormones in tablets, patches, creams, gels or generic pellets. Unlike other methods, SottoPelle® is based on science and works with the body in a way the body recognizes. Other doctors who do pellet therapy do not use this proprietary system and give patients a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone that is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Such imprecision may sometimes provide shortterm relief of symptoms but does nothing to achieve the level of hormonal balance. The SottoPelle method delivers on the long-term benefits everyone needs for healthy aging and to prevent disease.

I am 52 years old and was used to the way I was feeling due to perimenopause and the gradual change it was giving me. I didn’t realize how long I had not been feeling like I used to when I was in my twenties and thirties until I started your (bio-identical) hormone therapy. It was almost, literally, an overnight change! —Cheryl

Thank you for saving my life, my marriage and for giving me back my energy and self worth… I feel 500 percent better and you were wrong about me feeling 35. I feel 25! —Bonnie

Before seeing Dr. Tutera, I was asked to work with a sales team. I didn’t feel I was capable of taking on such responsibility. After seeing Dr. Tutera and having the hormone replacement pellet (procedure), I have agreed to take the sales consulting job and will be working with a sales team for three months. —Joy

MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board Certified Hand Surgeon

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb. De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System. Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons. Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

he stars must have been aligned the other day, and perhaps I should have played the lottery, because not only did both of my kids play together (and—gasp!—I actually heard them laughing together), but as I put each of them to bed that night, they were in loving moods and were cuddling and telling me how lucky they were that I was their Mom (yes, if I could have just replayed that day over and over, I would!). As anyone who is a parent knows, there are always ups and downs when you have kids. Some days are more trying than others, but overall, it’s the most rewarding thing you can do. In honor of Mother’s Day this month (men, if you’re reading this—head’s up—it’s May 10!), we profiled seven local women who not only manage to stay fashionable, but juggle motherhood and life with just as much style. You can read their fashion and mom tips on page 36. We also spoke with the Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner for this month’s cover. She shared not only her own childhood experiences, but how they have helped shape who she is today. Of course, she also talked basketball, life, and her upcoming wedding! Read her story on page 32. If you’re as excited about summer being right around the corner as I am (to go back to having kids—no homework! Phew!), we have lots of great products (flower-inspired home décor or sunglasses, anyone?) and styles (one-piece bathing suits are in this season!) throughout the issue to inspire you. Have a wonderful month—and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Yours, Michelle Glicksman Editor-in-Chief michelle@richmanmediagroup.com Twitter: @MGlicksman Find our magazines on Facebook!

CHANGING LIVES

Chad Barnett aims to help children both here and abroad BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

For many men, the prospect of being knee-deep in hundreds of kids is daunting. But for father-of-three Chad Barnett—a cofounder of the Arizona Children’s Business Fair and board member of Partners in Action who recently launched a partnership with Special Olympics Arizona—if there is a chance to help a child, he is in. “Of all things, I have sandwiches to thank for a lot of the good I am able to do these days,” laughs Barnett—and he is only half-joking. In 1993, at just 19, he worked in operation management for TCBY. Newly married, he and his wife, Jeana, moved from Texas to Arkansas to Indiana, and finally to Arizona, with the organization. continued… MAY 2015 |

up close In 2000, Barnett met Rick Ueable, who owned about a dozen Subway franchisees in Arizona. He and his partner were looking for someone to assist in operations management, and Barnett—who had fallen in love with the Valley—jumped at the opportunity. “Over the past 15 years, we’ve worked together to expand the business to 43 Subway locations and counting,” says Barnett, who today serves as president of Foods 2000, as well as chair of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust (SFAFT), which oversees marketing and advertising for the Subway brand statewide.

Partners in Action “In 2005, Rick started to talk to me about his project of passion, Partners in Action,” says Barnett. “The nonprofit is focused on developing and funding orphanages, soup kitchens and women’s shelters in more than 20 under-developed countries worldwide.” At the time, Ueable was visiting Africa twice a year to lend a hand, as well as to ensure that all programs and projects were moving along appropriately. Barnett eventually joined Ueable in East Africa, which included stops to provide aid to women and children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. “My life changed in an instant,” says Barnett, who just completed his 10th year of service to the organization and currently oversees the operations of one of Partners’ flagship orphanages in Uganda. “While I am certainly proud of the help we provide, I would be lying if I didn’t say that I needed Africa and those great kids more than they need me by a long shot.”

Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona Eager to also help kids right here in Arizona, Barnett also began volunteering with Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona in the mid-2000s. The organization has been focused on providing sports equipment, uniforms, registration fees, and access to major sporting events for kids who might not otherwise be able to participate. “We raise money in order to provide grants to local kids’ sports organizations each year. But in addition, we work with partners on a program called Cycle for Success, which goes into schools and

rewards children with new bikes, helmets, locks, and a Subway-catered party for doing random acts of kindness that might otherwise go unnoticed,” Barnett explains.

in with their own business ventures. “Our goal was to sign up 50 kids. We ended up with more than 150 kids, who sold products at 100 booths!”

AZ Children’s Business Fair

Special Olympics Arizona

Speaking of first-ever events, Barnett just managed to pull one off for—you guessed it—kids! “I belong to a men’s group of likeminded entrepreneurs, the Camelback Society. While we all had causes we personally supported, we wanted to do something collectively to inspire and impact local kids,” Barnett explains. “We’d heard of Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, which is the largest entrepreneurship event for kids in North America, and thought Phoenix would be a perfect place for a similar program.” So, the entrepreneurs got to work on the first-ever AZ Children’s Business Fair. The one-day event, which took place at the Arizona Center on March 28, gave kids the opportunity to spread their entrepreneurial wings by creating a product or service and eventually launching the business at the fair. “Through an application process, we worked with kids on product ideas, development, and even strategies to pitch their product to customers,” says Barnett, noting that his two daughters even joined

So, Barnett was ready for a breather, right? Wrong. In fact, since taking on the role of chairman of SFAFT in March, Barnett and Subway have put their heads together on a brand-wide strategy to help some of Arizona’s most talented and special children—the athletes of Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ). “Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 for SOAZ. Through the partnership, the more than 460 Subway restaurants in Arizona will donate a portion of proceeds from weekend sales now through Aug. 30 to the organization,” says Barnett. “We aren’t asking for donations at the counter. We aren’t encouraging customers to visit a website and make a pledge. We are simply inviting them to visit any of our locations in Arizona on a Saturday or Sunday for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Every visit will make a difference.” Subway also signed on to take an active role in SOAZ’s spring and summer events through food and raffle donations, as well as hands-on volunteering opportunities.

Passionate about Arizona and about Arizona’s kids BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

J

ennifer Hecker Duval is a social worker, wife, and mother. She is proud to be a native Arizonan, and spent her childhood traveling the state’s back roads. When her husband, Fred Duval, ran for governor in 2014, she says she realized it was a perfect chance to reacquaint herself with the best of Arizona. “It gave us the opportunity to fall in love with the state all over again,” she explains. She says that what became most obvious to them was the incredible potential here. As Arizona made headlines over the past few years with budget cuts and controversial bills, Duval says friends in other states asked why they stayed here, especially after the birth of their son Monte almost seven years ago. When her husband suggested she write a children’s book, she decided it was an ideal opportunity to share her passion for the state with others, especially children. Monte & the Magnificent Star, illustrated by Sara Ruhe, tells the story of Arizona through the eyes of a 5-year-old boy named Monte, and his companion, Dog-Dog.

Etc.

What are some of the things you cover about Arizona in Monte & the Magnificent Star? There are so many interesting things in Arizona: Sedona’s red rocks, Native American dancing, the border town of Nogales, the Grand Canyon, Sabino Canyon. We have countless treasures we take for granted, and these are what will sustain us as a state. Where can readers find a copy of the book? I’m sending it to schools that contact me via my website, www.heckyeswellness.com. It’s also available locally at Changing Hands or Write-Ons, Etc. on 7th Street, or online at www.amazon.com. Not even a banana looks good with brown spots, which is why this is one of our most frequently asked questions. There are two main types of brown spots. The first are freckles or sunspots, and we can prescribe a topical cream to lighten them – or go a little deeper with chemical peels or laser treatments. The second type is seborrheic keratosis, or age spots, which can be frozen off or diminished with lasers. Brown spots are a common occurrence, but Spectrum Dermatology can restore a brighter, more even-toned look to your skin. Spots? We think not! A more youthful appearance is just a phone call away. UPTOWN PLAZA RESTORATION Kylie and Ryan Durkin join the project’s dream team BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

I

n 1955, Del Webb Company developed Uptown Plaza as the Valley’s first retail center outside of Downtown Phoenix. Located on the northeast corner of Central Avenue and Camelback Road, the 1950s décor eventually gave way to strip mall redux. In 2014, Arizona-based commercial real estate development company Vintage Partners began renovating the plaza, peeling away decades of patchwork to uncover such details as red brick storefronts, decorative steel columns, and handpainted signage. Recently, Kylie and Ryan Durkin, owners of Modern Manor vintage furnishings, joined the team revamping Uptown Plaza. The Durkins, experts on mid-century modern, will help create a signature 1950’s style for the property, while still making it inviting for today’s shoppers. “This project is a rare find to midcentury fan boys like us,” says Ryan. In addition to incorporating some of the mid-century finds into the design, many of the most-beloved items are finding new uses. Wooden floors from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio have gone to historic home remodels, and the iconic windows from The Good Egg have been donated to a local church.

Etc.

What are some of the major finds made during the demolition process? The demolition process has uncovered many of the old decorative steel columns hidden away inside of the more recently added stucco canopy system. There are many more interior brick walls than we originally anticipated. What can people expect to find when Uptown Plaza reopens? When it reopens in fall 2015, we hope to have the right collection of local, regional and national tenants, coupled with shaded walkways and a central gathering courtyard. Our goal is to return much of Uptown Plaza to its original mid-’50s look, with the addition of modern tenant storefronts—the best of both generations. UPTOWN |

her style

W

hen Lisa Balzotti describes her personal style, it’s basically where comfort and casual collide. “I have a bit of a ’60s and ’70s boho look,” she says. “Basically, I’m a T-shirt and jeans gal with a little bit of flare.” Balzotti is the director of operations at EATERAZ, the successful operation behind many food festivals here in the Valley, and says her jeans and T-shirt look is what gets her through most days. “Honestly, I am fortunate to have the freedom to dress the way I want most days, and being comfortable is my number one priority,” she explains. Balzotti says that on most days you will likely find her wearing high-wasted jeans, flowing T-shirts, and flats, and during festival days, shorts, tank tops, and her well-known festival boots. “It’s all about function and being comfortable. I want to feel good about what I’m wearing,” says Balzotti. “Fancy for me would be putting on a pair of my Sam Edelman booties, a pair of black pants, and a blouse.”

PASSION FOR FOOD & FASHION

What do you do for fun when you aren't planning food festivals or working? Yoga at Sutra. Eat and drink at Welcome Diner, Otro Cafe, Clever Koi or Lux. Shows at Crescent Ballroom. Frisbee golf at Los Olivos Park. Other festivals. What would be one thing in your closet people might be surprised to hear you have, given your style focus? My bell bottoms! Super excited they’re back “on trend,” so I may get a little carried away… Wait, is that surprising? If you weren't planning food festivals and operating EATERAZ, what do you think you might be doing? Planning music festivals, and working (for my fiancé) at SmithField making custom furniture.

DR. MARK HONG

P

hoenix native Dr. Mark Hong, M.D. has a successful urology practice with three locations in Phoenix. Hong’s wardrobe is all about clean lines and classic styles, with just a bit of quirk thrown in for good measure. He believes that style is an outside reflection of what’s on the inside. He values substance over entertainment, and loves quality fabrics, clean lines and expert tailoring, which in turn translates into an effortless style for him. Hong says style starts from deep within oneself, and that includes having a healthy body, focused mind, and a mindful spirit. When those components come together, as Hong says, you can “rock whatever you’ve got.” His fashion has changed over time and he doesn’t dress how he did decades ago, but bow ties are a wardrobe staple and practical for his work as a physician and surgeon. Hong incorporates items into his wardrobe that reflect his travels, and he has everything from cool boots that he picked up in a back alley in Seoul, Korea, to cashmere from Milan.

Sports a “nerdy-classic” style BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

How do you best describe your own personal sense of style? I think of myself as nerdy-classic. It’s sort of like Mad Men meets Big Bang Theory. I think my passion tends to be more classic, but I like it with a twist. That twist is to stay true to my nerdy roots. Tell us about your bow ties. As a surgeon, I see a lot of patients, and it’s the cleanest neckwear I can wear. I started wearing bow ties when I was in residency in Boston. To me, bow ties will always connect me back to a very important time in my life—my training. Where are two or three of your favorite places to shop for clothing and accessories? I like Barneys New York in Union Square in San Francisco; Suitsupply in Scottsdale; and the company that makes repurposed, recycled and double-sided bow ties is called Dapper+Dash. UPTOWN |

Feel the inner peace.

RESHAPE YOUR MIND, BODY & SPIRIT WITH HOT YOGA. A stronger, toned and more flexible body and an improved state of mind encouraging relaxation, selfacceptance and awareness. “In a yoga class, you practice poses that require stretching and compression of the joints, muscles, ligaments and other supporting structures of the body.

Your body naturally protects itself from physical exertion by generating heat from the inside muscles outwards. We start with the heat up front…providing that extra protection from the very first poses. Your body burns fat more effectively and you lose inches of shape in a relatively short time”.

Newcomers and experienced students welcome.

T

hings are going pretty well for Brittney Griner. Already, she has made a name for herself in the WNBA and beyond—in addition to being a member of the 2014 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury, she’s also won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2014 FIBA World Championships for Women in Turkey, was named the 2014 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (the first player in Phoenix Mercury history to win the award!), was named All-WNBA First Team and AllWNBA Defensive First Team honors, set a WNBA single-season record for blocked shots in a season with 129 in 2014, owns the WNBA single-game record for blocked shots in a game with 11 on June 29, 2014 at Tulsa, and finished the season with more blocked shots than eight of the other 11 WNBA teams. Whew! She’s also marrying the love of her life this month (Tulsa Shock player Glory Johnson). On top of all that, Griner has a bestselling book, In My Skin. The book has helped countless kids and adults who struggle with being bullied. But, to speak with authority on how to overcome bullying, one must first be bullied, and that’s where Griner’s story begins—but certainly not where it ends.

THE EARLY YEARS

Her life as an athlete actually began away from nets and hoops. “I played volleyball and soccer,” she explains. “I was in seventh grade when I first started playing volleyball. I played both in seventh and eighth grade, and I was supposed to keep playing soccer, but I didn’t want to do it anymore. My last game I got kicked in the head with some cleats and we lost the game as well, and I was just done. I didn’t want to take any more cleats to the side of the head. But, I played volleyball in ninth grade, and then I gave it up. I hated the tights. That’s when I started playing basketball. I had played with friends before then, but I didn’t play organized basketball until the ninth grade. I always was a fan of basketball and I used to go see the Comets play in

Houston, and I would watch basketball on TV, but didn’t get into it until then. “And then I had a growth spurt, so that helped. I was 6 feet tall in ninth grade, and when I graduated I was 6 foot, 7 inches. I grew one more inch in college.” And, Griner had the skills to go along with her height, so it wasn’t long before people began to notice. “Sophomore year I started getting letters from a lot of schools,” she recalls. “I still have all of them. Pretty much every school wanted me. Basically every big school, the top 25, I’d guess. It felt really good. I wanted to go to Tennessee to MAY 2015 |

play for Pat [Summitt], but I wanted to stay close to my mom. If I had gone anywhere further than where I ended up, she wouldn’t have been able to see me play. My dad went to every one of my home games except for two when I was at Baylor. “It was super hard to be a student athlete. Just the demand and being dog tired at the end of every day. We had to do all of our classes in the morning because we had practice in the evening. I think student athletes should be paid. It’s basically like you’re at a job. It’s actually more hours than a full-time job. It was crazy.”

She’s certainly still busy, but the biggest concern in her life at the moment is something anyone has been married can empathize with. “Ugh, [wedding planning is] so stressful,” she sighs. “But we’re right at the end, so it’s coming along. I wish I could just sit at home and they’d be like, ‘Hey, the wedding’s tomorrow. Show up.’ We should have just run away.” She says that last bit with a laugh, but she’s clearly not a girl obsessing over whether or not the napkins match the centerpieces (although the couple was featured on the show Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta). And even though the planning may be draining, she’s eager to be married (the wedding is actually in town this month).

THE PROPOSAL

“I actually noticed Glory way before she noticed me,” says Griner. “We played against each other in college. I’ve told her this now, but she didn’t know back then that I had a crush on her. Later, we had mutual friends so we were always hanging out. I kinda set her up on a date,

but she didn’t know it was a date at first. I set her up on a second date that night and we went to Cirque du Soleil that night. After that we just kept talking and started dating and here we are now getting married. “The proposal was scary. I was so nervous. It wasn’t your traditional proposal, I guess. We had an event at this club in Atlanta. We had just played and they [Glory’s team] were about to play the next day. I was able to stay for their game. It worked out perfectly, because all of her old teammates from college were in town that day. I invited all of them and my sister was there. My sister and I had gone ring shopping that day. I didn’t know I was going to pop the question that same day, but we were shopping and I saw the ring and thought it was perfect. I just figured I’d keep it and hide it. Something told me to just do it. It just felt right. “At the club I sat her down in a chair and they put the spotlight on her and blindfolded her. They put on music, and then they cut the music and took the blindfold off and I was down on

one knee. I was sweatin’ bullets. At first it was quiet and I was like, ‘Oh God, somebody just take me now. Turn the lights off so I can run out.’ Then she started smiling and crying and she grabbed the ring. So I said, ‘I take that as a yes?’ And she said, ‘Yes, yes.’ It was amazing.”

SPEAK OUT AGAINST BULLYING

The happiness is well deserved for Griner, who endured years of bullying and homophobia throughout her youth, and even into her college career at the ultra-conservative Baylor University in Texas. She has advice for LGBT youth who are experiencing the kind of bullying that she did. “I would say to speak out,” says Griner. “I was one that was silent and I didn’t tell anybody and that was probably the worst decision I could have made. Holding all that in, bottling it up. I would say seek counseling. I’m the first one to say I went to counseling for it through college for just about three years. To the parents of LGBT youth, know the signs,

don’t overlook it. The worst thing you can do is say you’re not having it, you’re not raising that in your house. I dealt with that and it was probably one of the things that made me rebel. I felt like I wasn’t safe at school and I wasn’t even safe at home. Just be there for your child. Look for them being isolated, look for them pulling away. There are definitely signs. I know I showed signs.” Though most of her family was supportive when she finally did come out, she did meet resistance from one important person. “I’ve kinda always been out a little bit,” she says. “I feel like most people should have known. I officially came out to my mom ninth grade year, and the rest of my family just after. My mom was fine. I was a little nervous. At my school, it was

kinda known that a lot of the girls were lesbians, especially on the basketball team. So I said, ‘You know, Mom, at my school, what my team is kinda known for? I’m one of them.’ And she was like, ‘Ok, and?’ She told me she loved me and it didn’t matter. I told my brother and sisters and they said they already knew, they were just waiting for me to tell them. My dad had a little bit harder time with it. We butt heads a lot. We’re very much alike. He has older views on life and everything. It was tough. I left home my senior year for half of the year. I came back at the very end, right before graduation. That was tough. It was still bad in college. He did come to all of my games and I’d see him there, but then I’d go back to my dorms. We argued a lot. But he says he’s ok now.”

If you’re wondering how Griner feels about her former bullies, this quote from her book sums it up pretty well: “It seems so stupid when I look back on it now, how much I wanted to be part of the in-crowd. You know what? Screw the in-crowd. Trying so hard to be like everyone else, to talk and act like everyone else, to be something you’re not, is exhausting and selfdestructive… Every voice matters and being different is a good thing. Who wants to be the same as everybody else?” One thing’s for sure: Brittney Griner is one-of-a-kind and thank goodness she gave up trying to fit in, otherwise the world might have missed out on her wonderful self. I try to stay away from really trendy pieces… oh, and white pants, white shirts– forget about it. ONE PIECE OF STYLE ADVICE YOU’D PASS ON TO YOUR DAUGHTERS: Go against the grain. Be different. Don’t buy the pieces everyone else wears. Come up with your own super funky fresh style.

ANDREA VERES HILAND CHILDREN: Ava, 9, and Hawkins, 5 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: While the kids are at school, I am working hard at my “other job,” which is hosting the “asked and answered” program for The Arizona Republic and www.azcentral.com. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: The butterflies I feel every time one of them hugs me! THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: That I would constantly feel inadequate! HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I like to do any activity that gets them talking! I love hearing about what’s going on inside those little minds! It most likely occurs when I have one of them at a time…. playing air hockey, hiking, even just driving in the car. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? I usually gravitate toward simple clothes that I can personalize by adding really cool accessories. I aim for chic and classic, with a bit of whimsical thrown in there at times. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Right now I’d say a loose, fitting top, a skinny jean of some sort, heels, bangles, and a long necklace. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? It’s hard to pick one (I have a touch of “Fashion Attention Deficit Disorder”)… sometimes it’s shoes, sometimes it’s bags or sunglasses, but it usually tends to be in the accessory department. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? That’s kind of a tough question for someone like me, because I don’t ever spend on just one designer. But I do know that Carol Anderson (CAbi) clothes are made very well—and fit me beautifully. I can also always count on White House l Black Market, BCBG, and Calvin Klein to make me feel pretty. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? Ha! My husband and I laugh more over our daughter’s fashion choices than just about anything else. I will say that my mom has always had an incredible sense of style… and still turns heads to this day. She was a great example to look up to as I was growing up. ONE PIECE OF STYLE ADVICE YOU’D PASS ON TO YOUR DAUGHTER: Know your body type! There will be certain styles that look great on others—and not you—and that’s okay! Figure out what flatters your body and go with that! Also, I think you should always strive to present your “best self”—and that trickles into fashion, but it’s much more about who you are as a person. If you exude poise and confidence, half the fashion battle has been won.

LAURA STEWART, PSY.D. CHILDREN: Calli, 16; Emily, 12; and Max, 11 WHAT YOU DO DURING THE DAY: I am a clinical psychologist. I split time between my private practice in North Central Phoenix and Recovia, a new functional rehabilitation program in Scottsdale. BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM: The best thing is watching my kids grow and develop into the amazing individuals they are meant to be. Each one is uniquely different and I feel so blessed to be their mom. I try to stay present and mindful as much as possible. The moments I am able to accomplish this are the best—whether they are funny, sweet or crazy! THE ONE THING NO ONE TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT BEING A MOM: How much I learn from my kids. They make me want to be a better person, and watching them navigate life is a fascinating experience. Sometimes just observing how they handle a situation or talking with them about an issue ends up being a life lesson for me. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I love hanging out at home and cooking together. No matter what kind of day we all had, working together to cook a meal seems to make everything feel right again with the world. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? I would describe my fashion style as conservative, chic and sophisticated. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: My go-to outfits are any wrap-style dress for work, or a blazer paired with dark jeans for more casual days. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? Handbags, lots of them. HEELS OR NO HEELS? Heels. WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? BCBG, Muse Apparel and Nordstrom. FAVORITE DESIGNERS? Tory Burch, Vince Camuto, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein. DID YOUR KIDS INHERET YOUR SENSE OF FASHION? So far that’s a big no—but it could change. My kids take casual dressing to a whole new level. WHAT’S THE KEY TO JUGGLING FASHION AND MOTHERHOOD? I wish I had the key to juggling fashion and motherhood! I know for me, if I don’t plan my outfits ahead of time, I will end up throwing something together frantically in the morning.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN? I love playing “school,” board games, reading, basketball with a really short hoop, and oddly, I like driving them places as they can’t go anywhere so we end up having great discussions. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Couture funk. YOUR GO-TO TYPES OF OUTFITS ARE: Really high chunky heels (I have finally determined the risk/reward of wearing skinny heels is not worth taking), a short fun dress or a suit, and generally not much black. YOUR GUILTY FASHION INDULGENCE? Chanel suits. HEELS OR NO HEELS? Heels—my flipflops even have platforms—I like feeling tall! WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP? ver the past year, Dr Erik Svans and Dr Steven Chang have treated 100’s of teeth with a revolutionary procedure to correct Gingival Recession away from a procedure called Pinhole Surgical Technique™ or PST™. The results have been very impressive, without the need for suturing and cutting donor tissue from your palate, which was required for Traditional Gingival Grafting. Focusing on solving the original cause of the recession first (overzealous brushing, history of periodontal disease, bruxism), and treating the affected sites with PST™ second, Dr Svans and Dr Chang have been able to provide an alternative to Gingival Recession

Correction predictably and reliably with minimal pain—the number one reason why patients and dentists dislike the Traditional approach. Pinhole Surgical Technique was designed to help those who suffer from Gingival Recession procedure that is considered the most painful procedure in Dentistry. Dr. Svans and Dr. Chang were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. The artists in this exhibition explore neglected yet pressing histories, such as the violence against women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico; the marginalization of indigenous communities in Guatemala; and the fate of civilians “disappeared” by military and paramilitary groups in Colombia. Discover Hidden Histories from around the globe, from Mexico to Columbia, Argentina to Guatemala, and the United States. www.phxart.org. The professional production will feature top classical actors from both Arizona and around the United States, and will be performed against the majestic natural backdrop of the Garden. The production will also include bold visual elements, stunning costumes, lighting, and stage magic designed to highlight the surroundings of the Garden. "Audiences will thrill to the visual excitement of this world-premiere adaptation,” explains Ken Schutz, Desert Botanical Garden’s executive director. “This little-produced Shakespeare play, often referred to as 'Shakespeare's Fairy Tale', will find great popular appeal outdoors, under the stars, with live musicians, glorious costumes, original songs, and Shakespeare's magical language. WHAT DREW YOU TO BAKING?

I just kind of fell into it through my love of food. I saw a dessert that looked good and I recreated it, and the passion just grew from there. Also, my grandmother was a great baker, so it was a way to honor her. WHAT TYPES OF ITEMS DO YOU OFFER AT THE BAKERY PHX?

We offer traditional confections with a modern twist, such as our Kitchen Sink cookie (chocolate, caramel, marshmallow, and pretzel) and our Red Velvet “twinkies.” We also offer cakes, pies, croissants, cheesecake, cookies, scones, etc. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL ALL-TIME FAVORITE DESSERT?

I would have to say my grandmother’s chocolate cake. Her recipe always turns out so moist and chocolaty—it’s my favorite and a bestseller at the bakery! FINISH THIS SENTENCE: BAKING IS...

I know it sounds cliché, but baking is love to me. A good pastry just makes you happy! ANY BAKING TIPS YOU CAN SHARE?

Don’t be intimidated by baking. It is trial and error. You will make mistakes, but every mistake is also a learning experience. IF YOU WEREN’T A BAKER, YOU WOULD PROBABLY BE…

I would probably be a chef or a food critic! I love food and the entire culinary industry—couldn’t see myself in any other field. The Bakery PHX recently opened at 1528 E. Bethany Home Road, Phoenix; 480.499.0211; www.thebakeryphx.com. It’s open Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sat. from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

BE COOLER The Melrose Cooler is a light, crisp choice BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

“W

e’re located in the heart of the Melrose District and wanted to recognize the neighborhood and community where we are located,” explains John Strawn, general manager at The Refuge, of the Melrose Cooler drink served there. “We wanted something cool and unique just like the Melrose District. It’s a refreshing drink made with lemonade and our homemade lavender simple syrup.” In fact, the drink is made of Tito’s Vodka, homemade lemonade, homemade lavender simple syrup, and orange wedges. The cocktail itself is crisp and not too sweet, with a subtle floral hint that teases the palate. “It’s a light cocktail that will be perfect during the hot summer months,” Strawn says. The drink ($6.50) is one of the locale’s many specialties. A coffee shop by day and wine bar at night, there’s always something at The Refuge to sip, and of course, there are a variety of food options, as well, ranging from breakfast items and sandwiches to tapas, and more. If you order The Melrose Cooler drink, try pairing it with any of the bruschettas, a tuna sandwich or a Refuge salad, suggests Strawn. 4727 N 7th Ave., Phoenix; 602.265.1725; www.therefugeaz.com.

DELEÓN

A tequila that’s in a class all alone BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

D

eLeón Tequila boasts famous fans, including one famous fan so impressed with the high-end brand of 100% Pure Agave Tequila that he purchased a stake in the company itself. The fan? Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. In 2014, Combs—who has made a name for himself in the spirit world by helping increase Ciroc Vodka from 50,000 cases a year in sales to two million—purchased DeLeón in partnership with the world’s largest spirits company, Diageo. Since the purchase, the DeLeón family of tequilas has certainly gained attention—but is it worth all the hype? In a word—yes.

the precise guidance of the master distiller, contributes enriched depth and complexity to the agave’s natural sweetness, creating a remarkably nuanced character. DeLeón’s astonishing depth of flavor is also thanks to two distillations, which allows the tequila to retain the unique character acquired during the fermentation process. The master distiller purposefully and artfully cuts the beginning and end of the distillation, allowing only the absolute best portion, or Corazon, to find its way into every bottle, creating a subtle taste profile. Each varietal of the brand is displayed in a stunning bespoke-style bottle made from high-quality, fragrance-grade glass and boldly tattooed with the distinguishing mark of the DeLeón brand. Each expression in the ultra-premium and luxury collections is strikingly defined. Fine-line detailing accentuates the crowning, signature ornate metal closure, the master for which was meticulously hand carved by a jeweler from a one pound solid ball of sterling silver.

DeLeón at a Glance Produced in the highlands of Purisima del Rincon in Mexico, which literally translates to the “purest of the corner,” DeLeón boasts the only tequila-producing facility in the world with three natural spring wells dedicated to one source. The result? The distillery has the purest water levels in the entire country of Mexico. In addition, each of the brand’s signature tequilas are made from the finest 100% Highland Blue Weber agave sourced from the rich earth of the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. Hand-selected at harvest for high quality and peak ripeness, the brand’s plants yield perfectly sweet piñas, giving the tequila its abundant character and balance. Standout Sippers Since taking the reins in 2014, Combs has expanded the DeLeón line to include a very popular “Platinum” option, meant to go head-to-head with Patrón, according to Combs. But the true standout of the line is the DeLeón Extra Añejo—or DeLeón 51—which is the only tequila in the world to present a cask-strength 102-proof tequila. Rivaling the finest of world-class scotches, this is not a tequila for everyone. Only the very select, and the very selective. The Extra Añejo is aged for at least 36 months in American white oak barrels and then bottled at 108 proof. And while the higher alcohol content is noticeable, it is beautifully integrated with elegant notes of mature agave, vanilla, earth and oak. The smooth finish features hints of citrus, pepper, caramel and herbs. DeLeón Extra Añejo is available at fine grocery and spirit stores Valleywide, and retails between $325 and $340.

Spinato’s Pizzeria, a fixture in town since the first Valley location opened in 1971 (there are currently four locations), not only serves up fresh, authentic, homemade pizzas, but also is known for its specialty calzones, like this Baked Spaghetti Calzone. Not into spaghetti? There’s always the Chicago Steak Calzone, Buffalo Chicken Calzone, and Mamma’s Signature. This family-run restaurant also offers a variety of specialty pizzas, in addition to traditional and build-your-own options. And trust us, they’re all amazing. 5509 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.277.0088; www.spinatospizzeria.com.

one are the days of the “roach coach”—these days, food trucks are serving up creative fare by the hands of some of the most talented culinary artists in the Valley. The options go far beyond the once easy-to-come-by burger and fries; these days, you have a variety of cuisines to choose from and unexpected menu items. Thankfully, food trucks are becoming more and more prevalent, showing up at sporting events, farmers markets, and even businesses, giving everyone the opportunity to sample dynamic and mouthwatering dishes without restaurant prices. While there are a multitude of food trucks in the Valley, we’ve collected a sampling of some notable trucks where you’ll definitely want to test drive their food.

TRUCKING ALONG

Food trucks are here to stay (lucky for us!). Here are some tasty local options BY TARYN JEFFRIES

Burger serves the latter up in a number of creative varieties. You won’t find standard ketchup and mustard here, but a delightful array of aiolis that create a unique taste and a burger that you won’t find anywhere else. First off, the burgers are seared to perfection, keeping all of the flavorful juices inside, while imparting a slightly sweet caramelized char on the outside. The signature Aioli Burger is cooked to order and then dressed with aged sharp cheddar, Applewood bacon onion jam, lettuce, tomato, shaved red onion, and a roasted garlic aioli. Another UPTOWN |

creative selection would be the Falafel Burger, made with homemade falafel and topped with hummus, pickled onion, mango sauce, cucumber, and a special sumac aioli. The sour twang and heady fruity flavor of the sumac enhances the flavor of the cucumber and the falafel flavors, turning what you thought falafel tasted like on its head. www.aioliburger.com; look for them at Civic Space Park, First Friday, and Arizona Diamondbacks games.

Chef Wade’s Bistro on Wheels

Duck Confit Sliders, Fried Calamari, and Apple Beignets are certainly not dishes you’d expect to greet you from the window of a food truck, but those are just some

Green Chile Grill

You’ve come to expect big, bold flavors from living in the Southwest, but from a food truck? Why not? Green Chile Grill offers up delicious dishes with that great Arizona kick to the taste buds. The portions they serve are massive, and are an incredible value for the price. Their Green Chile Breakfast Burrito provides the perfect morning pick-me-up—it’s bursting at the seams with sausage, eggs, green chiles, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and a generous amount of mild cheddar. Looking for a way to liven up your lunch hour? Check out the Mini Green Chile Cheeseburgers, two small but mighty sliders packed with high quality beef, and topped with green chile, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato. And, your meal won’t be complete without their Truck Made Tortilla chips and salsa. (If you can’t handle quite so much heat, you can always ask to leave it off with no judgement.) www.greenchilegrill.com; look for them at the Democratic Offices and Phoenix Plaza.

The food is a delightful mix of Vietnamese and French cuisines mixed into rich and complex flavorful dishes. The idea of a grilled cheese sandwich alone takes you back to your childhood kitchen table, were you likely dipped the corners into a steaming bowl of tomato soup. That’s a warm and fuzzy memory, for sure, but 2 Fat Guys are not serving up the grilled cheese sandwiches your mom made (no one can top that, can they?). While they do offer a traditional grilled cheese along with their signature Roasted Red Pepper Tomato soup, they also have an eclectic collection of gooey delights on the menu. Their Hot in The City sandwich features cheddar, pepper jack and chicken with chiles and red pepper flakes on sourdough bread, creating a nice kick to the creamy blend of cheeses. www.2fatguysgrilledcheese.com; look for them at Food Truck Friday.

s a native Phoenician, attorney Matt Apfel always wanted to bring his legal work back to Arizona. Growing up in the Biltmore area, Apfel has a heartfelt love for the residents of Phoenix, so bringing his law practice back to his hometown in 2015 was no surprise to either himself or his family. “I moved back to Arizona from Washington, D.C., where I could give back to the community and work in a place where I have an intimate connection with people since I was born and raised here,” he says. Apfel and Associates, which originally began practice in Washington, D.C, relocated just recently to 2375 E. Camelback Road, Ste. #600, Phoenix (www.apfelandassociates.com). The practice focuses on international law—mostly transaction and business—from helping people with their small start-ups to working with multi-billion dollar corporations. The firm also works with federal legal issues, when applicable to transactional law, helping would-be business owners who want to move to Arizona from abroad to start a business here or invest in business growth in Arizona. “We want to work with people who want to invest in Arizona growth, and in the U.S. We want to work with them and help make that happen,” Apfel explains. Apfel adds that he has an affinity for international law due to his connections with Arizona and his childhood in the Grand Canyon State. “There was something innate in me to travel when I was younger, learn different languages, go beyond what was inside Arizona. However, I always wanted to bring what I learned outside the state and country and bring it back to Arizona and share it with the community here.” Apfel isn’t alone in his practice. Joining him is Angelo Torrealba, an MBAtrained law practice manager and human rights advocate. The two work together to help their clients. Torrealba provides any and all business support for Apfel, and he is also working to get his masters

law degree at Arizona State University. Once that happens, he will be an attorney with the firm, as well. The pair have worked on nearly every continent (except for Antarctica), and they speak several languages. “Together we give our clients a business prospective, a personal prospective, and more. We are a great team,” adds Apfel. Apfel and Associates works on a variety of transactional law including contract drafting and review, corporate retainers, legal business planning, practice management, U.S. immigration and citizenship, and more.
