Can I get an “expungement” of my criminal record in Arizona? How can I restore my civil rights? This is one of the most frequent questions I get from potential clients who are seeking to remove or hide a criminal conviction in order to get a job, get housing, get a professional license or face any type of background check. Arizona does not allow for an expungement of a criminal record except in very rare circumstances. Instead, we offer a “set aside” of the conviction. A set aside does not remove the conviction from your record, it would only show that the conviction was set aside, dismissed or the judgment was vacated. Under Arizona law, the set aside is designed to release a person from all the penalties and disabilities that resulted from the conviction. This can give a person a way to explain the conviction and avoid it as a major obstacle to housing, employment or professional licensing. A person must submit an application to the court to request the set aside. In order to pursue a set aside, the Court typically requires that all sentence requirements were fulfilled and that the person had remained law-abiding since the conviction. There are additional requirements for a person to meet if he/ she served a prison sentence as a result of their conviction. If a person is convicted of a felony, they may also ask the court to restore their civil rights and their right to possess a firearm, if they are eligible. A conviction does not need to be set aside to make a person eligible to request restoration of their civil rights, but it often makes sense to file these requests together if a person is eligible. Arizona state courts cannot set aside or restore civil rights for a federal conviction Some convictions are not eligible to be set aside. Sometimes a person must also wait a certain period of time to be eligible to apply. There are times where good representation and advocacy can help sway a court to grant a person a second chance with a set aside of a conviction. ALL FOR THE CHILDREN Kate Wells proudly ushers in the 10th year of a beloved museum

“I’ve always been a ‘glass half full’ kind of person,” says Kate Wells, co-founder and CEO of the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. “And my perception of the world as a child definitely influenced me as an adult to always find the good in every opportunity.”

When a special opportunity presented itself to her about two decades ago, Wells delved in with absolute fervor. It was a grassroots effort, conceived in the minds of a small group of friends in a living room one afternoon. Using their combined experiences and skills, dogged determination, and a shared vision, they would

create a children’s museum to serve the rapidly growing Phoenix population. By 1998, the friends had successfully laid the groundwork and raised enough money to open the Phoenix Family Museum, a place meant to enrich, educate and inspire the minds of children. Following great success, mass numbers of visitors, and the need and desire to evolve and expand, the museum morphed into today’s hugely popular and innovative Children’s Museum of Phoenix, which opened under the new moniker in 2008. “I am blown away every single day at the joy and learning that happens at the museum,” Wells says. “Seeing children try new things, master things they’ve tried before, make new friends, explore their creative side, conquer fears, engage with the bigger world – all of these things are building cognitive connections that will help them thrive in school and be lifelong learners.” Wells credits her own childhood learning and life experiences to giving her the courage to pursue the creation of the museum. “I spent most of my childhood in South Florida, splitting time between my mom and dad’s houses,” she explains. “I was given a lot of freedom as a child to explore and try things on my own – the beach and the edge of the Everglades were my

playgrounds.” And Wells, being an adventurous child, explored every inch. “I know those early experiences helped make me the fearless adult that I am.” Midway through high school, Wells’ mother secured a job in Phoenix, and they moved from the swarthy swamps of the Everglades to the scorching heat of the Sonoran Desert. “I spent my junior and senior years at Horizon High School in Scottsdale,” she says, adding an enthusiastic, “Go Huskies! After graduation, I attended Arizona State University for a year and a half, where I met my future husband, Jeff.” Wells transferred to San Diego State University to finish her schooling, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science. After graduation, she and Jeff moved back to Phoenix, opened coffee house and antique shop, Blue Bottle Cafe, and started a family. It was when Wells’ first daughter was 18 months old that she and her friends had that momentous living room conversation. “This year at the museum, we’ll celebrate not only our 10th birthday, but we’ll also welcome our 3 millionth visitor, which is astonishing to me, given our very humble roots. But what I’m most proud of,” she says, “is our Every Child Program. Through Every Child, the Museum annually provides over 50,000 free and deeply reduced admissions to at-risk children and their families. Some of the families are economically disadvantaged, others have children with special needs, and others might be socially isolated. Through our program, they have the opportunity to take part in the joy and learning that the museum provides. Pretty much all of the fundraising we do is to support the Every Child Program.” That includes, of course, the 10th anniversary celebration happening March 10. At the 10 Years of Magical Moments Gala, the museum promises a fun, interactive evening comprised of a glittering cocktail party, dinner under the stars, silent and live auctions (with the option to buy a “Magic Wand” and steal anyone else’s prize), a celebration of the annual Kids at Heart Award recipients, and drinks, desserts and dancing to cap things off. Tickets for this adults-only fête are available online for $275 per person. Ten years is truly something to celebrate, but according to Wells, the museum is just getting started. “Not many people know this, but the building we’re in – the historic Monroe School – is 70,000 square feet, and we currently only use 50,000 square feet of it. We have big plans for the empty spaces, and just completed the first phase this January. Our new Children’s Garden is in full bloom, and the ever-popular Art Studio re-opened in its new light and bright space, along with a great new Thing-a-ma-jig space. The KIDchen, the Rumpus Room, a new classroom, and The Monroe (a beautiful 3,000-square-foot multipurpose space) all opened this January.” In 2018 Wells looks forward to continuing the growth and mission of the Museum, and says that she and her team will be exploring, as she says, “Some very ambitious ideas.” For more information or to buy gala tickets, visit www.childrensmuseumofphoenix.org.

NAMASTE, EVERYDAY Real estate exec Mark McCloskey goes with the flow

By his mid-30s, then-uber competitive real estate professional Mark McCloskey had already conquered several goals in business, including sales and development for both Third Avenue Lofts in Scottsdale and Centerpoint Condominiums in Tempe. A similarly hyper-driven athlete, he’d also conquered most of the Valley’s trails on his mountain bike, when he wasn’t playing basketball, golfing or hitting the gym. “But, just as we began to feel the financial pain of the real estate market downturn around 2009, I began to feel the physical pain of sciatica radiating down every nerve in my lower back on a near-daily basis,” says McCloskey, who joined The Village in 2010, seeking an alternative means of exercise. On a whim, he signed up for yoga, determined to Downward Dog his way to the head of the class, and fast. “But here is the thing – in yoga, practice doesn’t make perfect. It isn’t about being the best, or besting those around you at all, in fact,” McCloskey explains. “True yogis learn to check their egos at the door, and eventually learn to check them altogether.” Once he did, he was surprised to find new opportunities coming to him both personally and professionally. His biggest opportunity to date: CONTOUR on Campbell. In 2017, McCloskey was named sales manager for the 111-home luxury condo project, which is just two blocks from 24th Street and Camelback Road and walking distance to all of the Biltmore area’s restaurants, shopping and other lifestyle-focused amenities. The condos, which McCloskey spent the past year helping to design, develop and sell, start in the high $200,000s, with residents moving in next month. “The developer, LivUrbn, and our team spent a lot of time digging deep into the character and heritage of the area to understand its history, pulse and presence so this community would immediately embed into the local fabric,” says McCloskey, who’s especially proud of their use of post-tension concrete to ensure optimal energy efficiency as well as the rooftop terrace and lounge, resort-style pool, and the two-story fitness studio. And, within said studio … space for yoga instruction, of course.

#LOVEBEINGEMPOWERED AND DEFY THE STEREOTYPE FIVE EXPERT TIPS FOR WOMEN TO AVOID RIP-OFFS IN THE MALE-DOMINATED AUTO REPAIR INDUSTRY.

I

t’s February, and love is in the air. But one thing nobody loves is getting their hearts (and bank accounts) broken by a hefty car repair bill. Now, imagine how much that would sting if your bill were higher based solely on your gender. For women, this is often the unfortunate reality – the stereotype that women know less about cars makes it easier for repair shop owners to take advantage. But we can change this unfair practice, and one area business owner is leading the charge. We spoke with Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, whose longtime mission has been empowerment of his clients, both female and male. He believes that no one should feel intimidated by car repairs, or pay an inflated price because they aren’t familiar with what they should actually be paying. “When the consumer has no idea how something works, they are dependent on the repair shop to inform them of the truth,” says Shahe. If your repair shop lacks integrity, you’re ripe for a rip-off. No matter your gender, familiarize yourself with your owner’s manual so you have an idea of what your car needs. “Never call a repair shop and say, ‘I have no idea about cars! What is this supposed to cost me?’” Shahe warns. “You’ve just set yourself up for a higher bill.” There are many reputable shops with professionals making an honest living, but a few bad apples will try to cheat drivers – mainly women – out of their money. To avoid being taken for a ride, Shahe recommends these five tips: Do your research. Have a solid idea of what to expect before you even set foot in the repair shop. Find out how long they have been in business and whether they offer a warranty. Get an idea of their reputation by asking around. You want value over price, so don’t be led by lowball pricing; the cheapest quote isn’t necessarily the best one.

Get it in writing. Before you agree to any service, make sure your estimate is in writing. Ask for the final price, including tax and shop fees. Know your car’s suggested services. Dig out that handy-dandy owner’s manual that you might have shoved into your glove compartment, buried under Target receipts and parking tickets. Check to see when your car will need certain services, like spark plug replacements or oil changes, so that you can have the mechanic perform those services only when necessary. If the mechanic attempts to perform an action prematurely, ask for a detailed explanation before deciding whether to allow it. Understand the difference between the types of repair. The first type is recommended repair work, or maintenance that could improve your car’s performance, such as acceleration or fuel efficiency. The second type, preventative, is work that isn’t urgent right now, but will likely need future attention. By agreeing to preventative work now, you could be saving beaucoup bucks on a more serious problem later. Finally, necessary repair work is absolutely vital for your car’s safe performance. Sometimes it’s just expensive. There’s really no way around the fact that repair costs can be expensive. Even required parts and labor can cost a pretty penny. You may not want to pay for 12 hours of labor, but a mechanic who takes the time to perform a thorough, quality service is worth the price. Shahe’s best advice for anyone, but especially women: “Ask and tell, don’t get pushed around.” Trust your instincts. Women who tell the repair shop they’ve done their research about the facility, who aren’t afraid to ask for explanations, and who understand the difference between a necessary repair and one that can wait are more likely to pull out ahead of being taken advantage of. And that’s definitely something to love.

PUPS AND PINOT Patty Gii and Keith Shanks of Rott n’ Grapes

Meet Patty Gii and Keith Shanks, the Rottweilerrescuin’, wine-lovin’ husband and wife team behind Rott n’ Grapes (www.rottngrapes.com). The wine and beer bar serves over 90 different grape varietals. The couple first played with the idea of opening their own bar over glasses of wine in Italy. Throughout both of their careers, they aided in startup business for other people. This time it was their turn. The couple traveled to wine meccas, including Napa Valley in California and San Gimignano in Italy, immersing themselves in both regions and cultivating an appreciation for wine and craft beer. “Italy is calling. They said we are overdue for a visit,” Shanks laughs. After extensive research that iinvolved a lot of sampling, they opened Rott n’ Grapes – a namesake for their two passions: Rottweilers and wine – in June 2016. Shanks is the numbers, handling growth strategies and investments. Gii, as the creative, is the brand and marketing manager. Their strengths come together to create a fun environment where picking out wine (and craft beer) is approachable and enjoyable. “We want our locations to feel warm, welcoming and comfortable. Thus explaining our slogan, ‘Make America Grape Again,’” Gii explains. The couple is slated to open a second location on Roosevelt Row this summer, which is four times bigger than the original spot on Central Avenue. Just last month, they launched a wine club for people who want to expand their vino knowledge. The couple anticipates more opportunities to come at the larger location with one being a potential beer club. “The American dream is doing something that you really enjoy. At Rott ‘n Grapes, we are being the man instead of working for the man. The best part is that we get to do it together!” Shanks explains. In addition to wine, the pair also advocates for dogs. They have rescued countless Rottweilers throughout the years. Their current fur babies are Onyx and Dolcetta. HALO Animal Rescue, a local non-kill facility, and Veterans of Foreign War – Shanks served as a Naval officer for 15 years – are a few of their favorite organizations. “Every year, we raise money and donate to these organizations either through raffling off items or in-house contests,” Gii says.

Hokey Begay shapes his sense of style around the two things he knows best: comfort and technology. The IT guru opts for simple apparel paired with cutting-edge technology – or shall we say accessories – that any geek squad would be jealous of. “My favorite pieces are my glasses and my Apple Watch,” he says “I like to change out the Apple Watch bands to match my outfit most times. And, I can never leave home without my iPhone!” Although he is very plugged in to the IT industry now, tech wasn’t always Begay’s plan. He majored in exercise and wellness at Arizona State University before working his way up to his current position at Food Services of America. While tech destination Silicon Valley isn’t known for high fashion, don’t expect that to stop Begay from taking pride in his everyday getup as there is a certain chic quality to his self-proclaimed “simple-comfortable” vibe. “I love darker colors such as navy blue, black or gray,” he says “I like to keep my style simple by wearing mostly solid colors, Levi’s regular tapered stretch jeans/pants with [Converse] Chuck Taylors.”

What is your favorite season to dress for? Wedding season, of course! But, I also like to dress for the fall so I can wear shirts with jeans. When you are not at work, where can we find you? I spend most of my spare time with my dog, Riley at dog parks, dog-friendly restaurants or we go hiking. I also enjoy spending time with family, friends, going to the gym and playing video games when possible. What is something that would surprise people to know about you? I love bowling – I’ve been bowling since I was 8 years old.

Emilie Andrews, current senior marketing director at Tempe Marketplace, began gleaning inspiration from fashion magazines as a youngster. “I was entranced with models, wishing on day I could mimic their mesmerizing beauty, glamour and grace,” Andrews says. Christy Turlington and Kate Moss were a few of her favorites as a girl. Nowadays, she turns to the likes of Cate Blanchett and Jessica Chastain for inspiration. Andrews is often found in separates, pairing billowy blouses or tailored button-downs with a signature black skirt, trousers or leggings. She’ll typically mix bright colors and patterns reminiscent of the ’60s and ’70s into her wardrobe. In fact, she cannot leave the house without her big, Jackie-O-style shades. Vestar, a shopping center company, sought out Andrews’ fashion expertise to coordinate fashion TV segments. Andrews does it all, from pitching on-trend segments to hand selecting outfits to booking models. “Curating looks is an outlet for my creativity. I love presenting each ensemble on air and describing how to wear the trends.” She adds, “I’m chatty and communication is a strength of mine.”

What are some of your favorite designer labels? I tend to only splurge on designer labels for accessories. My philosophy is that shoes, handbags, sunglasses and jewelry truly polish up, finish off and elevate any look. I invest in quality shoes like Chanel, Stuart Weitzman, Prada and Christian Louboutin. I’m always carrying my Gucci tote. As a jewelry junkie, I love Rolex, David Yurman and Gauthier. When accessorizing looks, is less really more? For me, more is more. I love layering on lots of fine jewelry and tend not to edit as much. I typically wear multiple bracelets and rings, along with a watch, earrings and necklaces. I mix silver and gold with diamonds and different gemstones daily.

Truly Using Beauty for Good Anyone can write a check and send it off to a charitable organization. In return, they get a short-lived “I did a good deed” feeling and a tax deduction. This is enough for some. But for more than 20 years, Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery has been impacting our community through service to patients and personal giving to various local charities by doctors Ali Mosharrafa and Tamir Mosharrafa, brothers and plastic surgeons. They had a desire to do more than write a check to support local nonprofit organizations who are doing tremendous work in the Valley. “In our medical practice, over the span of our careers, we can and will do a lot of good, and that will impact the lives of our patients who walk through our doors,” says Dr. Tamir Mosharrafa. “Through Beauty for Good, we are able to reach countless people and impact many more lives beyond our patients. Kara Schell, managing director of Beauty for Good, has volunteered many hours for the charities that they support and is part of a mentoring group with Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. They truly have a personal, hands-on approach to their support of local nonprofits. “Being involved is more than writing a check. We choose our charitable partners carefully, and we commit to be a true partner, not just a sponsor to their cause,” Kara says. “Many small nonprofit organizations are unheard of, and the work they are doing could make a significant impact with more resources and support from Valley residents and businesses. We help those organizations showcase their mission in many ways through Beauty for Good by providing monetary gifts and hosting events to bring awareness to our charitable partners.” Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery is preparing to host the Second Annual Beauty for Good Gala at the Arizona Biltmore on Saturday, April 14, 2018. A2ndAct.Org – A2ndAct. org was founded by breast cancer survivor Judy Martens. Judy has an unwavering belief in two things: one, valuable lessons can come out of all journeys, even the difficult ones. And two, we all owe a payback to humanity. While recovering and preparing for “life after cancer” she found herself asking, “I have beat cancer, now what?” The question was no longer “Why me?” but, rather, “What next?” This was a common question in the survivor community. Pearce Family Foundation (PFF) – The Pearce Family Foundation is committed to being the bridge between the hospital and the home. Phoenix Dream Center – The Dream Center started with one goal: “To find a need and fill it, to find a hurt and heal it.” From housing 60 people and outreach services for 500 in the streets with food, they grew to providing housing to over 450 each night and reaching 36,000 in the community. They provide resources for many, from a simple hot meal and a pillow at night for the homeless to supporting young adults who have aged out of the foster care system and now have nowhere to turn to women who have been pulled into human trafficking by choice and force. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign (BRA) – Breast reconstruction following a mastectomy or lumpectomy is not for every woman, but every woman should be informed of the options to which she is entitled. In this spirit, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF) lead the Breast Reconstruction Awareness USA Campaign, one of the few breast cancer campaigns dedicated to building awareness around breast reconstruction. Arizona Cocktail Week-End moves to Phoenix

Arizona’s biggest and brightest salute to spirits and the local cocktail culture is back for its seventh year with some major changes. Arizona Cocktail Week-End, formerly Arizona Cocktail Week, is shaking up its format by squeezing in all of fun from previous years – along with some new surprises – into 72 hours over Presidents’ Day Weekend. In addition, all of the major festivities surrounding the event will now take place in Downtown Phoenix. The move from Scottsdale to Downtown is meant to create a more walkable, pedestrian-friendly event lineup, while showcasing the area’s red-hot cocktail scene and exciting new venues. As in year’s past, Arizona Cocktail Week-End will kick off with a big, opening night party. But, as with the rest of the event, it has a wholly new look, location and feel. “The 2018 Arizona Cocktail Week-End kicks off on Saturday, February 17 with The Cocktail Jam,” says Arizona Cocktail WeekEnd co-founder, Damon Scott. “Hosted at Downtown’s hottest new music hall, The Van Buren, The Cocktail Jam will pair trending spirit brands and amazingly crafted cocktails with live music by the Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra to create a one-of-a-kind experience in the Valley.” According to Scott, the festivities will then go full steam ahead the rest of the long weekend. Top Bars, the annual showcase of pop-up versions of the hottest local, regional, national and even global bars, is back on Feb. 18 and will be hosted by The Croft, a historic warehouse in Downtown Phoenix that has been transformed into a hip music venue. Previous Top Bars participants include a who’s who list of iconic and award-winning mixology hotspots such as Singapore’s The Manhattan Bar, London’s The Savoy, and New York City’s The Dead Rabbit. An iconic stretch of pavement provides the gathering place for one of Phoenix’s most popular events

Mark your calendars for March 3, when the Melrose on 7th Avenue Street Fair blooms into colorful life for the 16th consecutive year. According to Rochelle Poulton, associate board member of the Seventh Avenue Merchants Association (SAMA) and committee chairwoman of the event, this unique, ever-evolving event draws nearly 25,000 people from all corners of the Valley. And why shouldn’t it – when it features hundreds of handmade arts and crafts, wares from local businesses, hours of exploring for antique lovers, more than a dozen food trucks, a classic car show, and live music all along a one-mile stretch of road in one of Phoenix’s most charming areas? The Melrose District, spanning 7th Avenue between Camelback and Indian School roads has really become a destination for people seeking unique shops, quaint eateries, and live entertainment in the past years; but that was not always the case. “In 1998,” Poulton explains, “a group of 7th Avenue merchants (now SAMA) decided to join together to improve their neighborhood. Challenged with crime and blight, the Melrose District was struggling to stay alive. Given the mission to facilitate safety, community, revitalization and beautification, and relying solely on funds generated by grants and support of the surrounding neighborhoods, the district has begun to rebuild itself.” The fair is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving visitors plenty of time to peruse and shop while enjoying live music from local groups such as Pearl Ridge and the Fire Drum Marching Band. Be sure to bring your appetite, because there will be an impressive array of food trucks – 16, in fact – allowing you to sample every type of cuisine under the sun. Oh, and did we mention the beer garden? Children can hang in the Kid Zone while adults get to enjoy the Melrose Patio; a beer and margarita garden sponsored by Hensley Beverage Company and Roger Clyne’s Mexican Moonshine Premium Tequila. One of the most popular experiences, according to Poulton, is Chester’s Classic Car Show, which showcases over 100 classic cars and hosts a friendly, yet highly competitive contest for the “best” in several categories; including a People’s Choice Award. 2018 JEEP WRANGLER The beloved auto debuts a redesign for the first time in 11 years BY JIM PRUETER

Jeep Wrangler may be the most recognizable vehicle in the world. As such, when a new Wrangler is introduced, it’s a big deal not only for the company but also for the millions of Jeep owners around the world. A redesign happens only about every 10 years, and great care is taken to respect the brand’s history and legacy. For 2018, the time for a redo has arrived. Jeep loyalists will be pleased to know that the new Wrangler is an absolute home run, the best in the brand’s 75-plus-year history. Its off-road capabilities boggle the mind, and its on-road manners are significantly improved. Much is familiar, but better. All trim levels – Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon – come standard with a removable soft top and are available with two or four doors (Sahara is four-door only). Previously, removing the top was labor intensive, and reinstalling it was madly frustrating. The all-new Sunrider soft top takes less than four minutes to fold. Same goes for the folding windshield, and a new head bar keeps the rearview mirror in place. Replacing the zippered side windows is a new, easy-to-use, slide-in configuration. An optional Sky One-Touch power top (available

on Sahara and Rubicon four-doors) retracts with the push of a button. Driving the new Wrangler about 40 miles on paved roads, I immediately noticed the improved ride. Steering is much more precise thanks to the electro-hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering system, a new and welcome standard for Jeep. And, the new model improves on Wrangler’s already world-class off-road capability. Approach, departure and breakover angles are better, minimizing undercarriage scraping during off-roading. Ground clearance is up across the board, and the Wrangler can ford up to 30 inches of water. Visually, the new Wrangler pays tribute to Jeep’s design heritage. The legendary seven-slot grill has been updated, with the outer slats intersecting the headlights. The interior recaptures the original Jeep’s “horizontality;” round gauges and air vents are simply aligned. A 5- (standard), 7- or 8.4-inch touchscreen houses the Uconnect system; the latter two have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a perfect blend of old and new. The improvements to the 2018 Wrangler render the previous generation practically ancient by comparison. I expect it to fly off dealer lots.

Geordie’s pours up passion in a glass

Geordie’s at the Wrigley Mansion has a new face around, chef Christopher Gross, known for the Biltmore-area restaurant, Christopher’s & Crush Lounge. Taking Gross’ love for classic sippers and Wrigley Mansion Owner Jamie Hormel’s adoration of Negroni, Geordie’s General Manager Ben Sinon set out to create a cocktail fit for Valentine’s Day. The result is the Je t’aime ($13), a seasonal take on the classic Negroni using rarely used passion fruit bitters. “Bitters are utilized more and more today in drinks and the passion fruit added just a hint of sweetness (along with the needed passion for a Valentine’s drink),” Sinon says. And for the most romantic holiday of the year, there’s nothing like a bright, red hued drink to add to the mood. Thanks to the Campari, Boy Drinks World Passion Fruit Bitters and cranberry juice, the cocktail is following the theme of love. In addition to the above ingredients, Sinon adds CasWerks Gin, stirs all the components and the cocktail is served up in a martini glass with a squeeze and drop of lemon wedge. “The words I would use to describe it [the drink] are: bitter, sweet, orange, tart,” Sinon explains. As far as what to nibble on while imbibing? Sinon suggests it as a starting drink with cheese and charcuterie or with the new Wrigley House Smoked Salmon. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I knew really early on that I loved and enjoyed food more than most people I knew. When I was about 18 years old, I knew I wanted to work in hospitality after experiencing the industry with my first restaurant job. When I was 20 years old, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in cooking. I was on a cruise with my aunt where I was able to experience different cuisines and a great hospitality experience. Shortly after the cruise, I researched culinary schools and moved to Scottsdale to attend the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. When you’re not cooking, where would we find you? You can find me with my beautiful wife, Amy, and our daughters, Addison and Madelynn, and we enjoy hiking and watching movies together. If I have time, I love watching live sporting events. Being a Texan, I’m a huge San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys fan! What is your guilty pleasure? If you ask 10 people who have known me for at least two years, they know that I love hot dogs. I love to experience, and create the most complex dishes but I love a simple, old fashioned hot dog with mustard and onions. If there’s a gourmet hot dog shop when I’m traveling, I will make it a point to visit and try new hot dog combinations with unique toppings. What inspired your passion for Latin cuisine? It’s part of my heritage as I come from a Hispanic family. It’s a big part who I am. After working in restaurants for over 25 years, I’ve worked with people from all over the world including Puerto Rico, Honduras, Argentina, Mexico, El Salvador, and Peru and they introduced me to their cultures’ different foods, ingredients and family meals. What is your favorite Southern dish? I can’t get enough of Texas barbecue. I have many favorite barbecue joints in Texas and each one is special to me. Some are nostalgic because I’ve been going there with my family since I was a little kid. Others have the best brisket, sausage or pork ribs that I’ve ever had. 3961 E. DELI TAVERN A tavern the city can call its own

Phoenix is a happening place. Between museums, theaters, art and concert venues, shopping, sports, restaurants and bars, it has it all. Or so you’d think. Tucker Woodbury, executive partner of Genuine Concepts (the titan organization behind popular Valley venues like Linger Longer Lounge, Cobra Arcade Bar, and The Vig) thought differently. “This city was missing that one thing that every big city has,” Woodbury says, “which is that dog-eared, broken-in kind of corner, Downtown bar.” Think Cheers, for the modern age. In a word, what he and partner Charlie Levy (collaborators of Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar and other venues) wanted to bring to Phoenix was a tavern. A warm, welcoming, centrally located meeting spot for

all walks of life, offering good eats, plentiful drinks, and a front-row seat to Phoenix’s bustling Downtown area. As luck would have it, Woodbury and Levy already owned the perfect piece of property for such a venture. About two years ago, long-standing Phoenix hotspot, The Downtown Deli, closed its doors after 46 years, leaving behind a valuable piece of real estate near the corner of Central Avenue and Monroe Street. They purchased the space, and have been leasing it until recently, when the restaurant operating within went out of business. Instead of leasing again, the partners realized they wanted to bring their tavern idea to life, and this was the perfect place to make it happen. Since opening its doors in December 2017, Deli Tavern has already captured

the attention of the Downtown crowd, and Woodbury credits a lot of that to the vibe the bar exudes. “There’s nothing intimidating about it,” he says. “Everybody’s welcome. We crank up the classic rock, and you’ll notice that we have a deli T-shirt, but our staff is allowed to wear a T-shirt from any kind of Downtown bar, restaurant, or coffee shop. It’s just that whole community over competition idea, where we’re all in this together.” Everything about the tavern exudes character – from the vintage, wooden collapsing doors at the front, to the checkered flooring and mismatched bar stools, to the flamingo wallpaper and old black-and-white photographs of a Phoenix era gone-by. “One thing you’ll notice,” says Woodbury, “are the caricature walls. We’re trying to kind of resonate with Phoenix, so the pictures we put up may be famous people; they may be icons; they may just be recognizable Downtown characters. Maybe there’s a regular who sits on the corner of the bar that comes in for a beer every day, and we put up a picture of him. Who knows?” The tavern is also attracting patrons thanks to a menu that offers hearty American comfort food (like burgers and meatloaf), breakfast any time of the day or night, and, of course, a healthy selection of spirits, including wine, craft cocktails, and draft beer from Arizona breweries only. Woodbury is immensely pleased that Downtown finally has a tavern to call its own. “Phoenix is a happening and bustling metropolitan area,” he explains. “And this is that little bar that the city deserves to have.” Deli Tavern is open Monday through Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.; Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.; Saturday, 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.; and is closed Sunday. 130 N.
