I

don’t know about you, but I’m already dreaming of jeans, sweaters, boots and that crisp aroma that’s unmistakably autumn. So many other places are ringing in the first signs of fall, and we may deem their residents lucky. But – so are we. As event season picks back up this month, and in putting those events in this issue, I was reminded of the vast amount of good here in Scottsdale: good causes fueled by good, kindhearted people. Sometimes the amount of goings-on that the next few months bring can feel like a whirlwind, but if we pause to reflect, at the heart of them are so many chances to take the time to give back. Check out the highlights in our event section, starting on page 80. As far as community goes, there is definitely an artistic pulse in ours, blending our Western roots with contemporary thought and techniques – our feature is about five artists doing just that (page 52). And in another form of artistry, our cover story features Morgan Keister, who weaves her creativity into interior design. Read about her journey in the design world and the far-off locales that inspire her work on page 48. Oh, and speaking of travel, I’m happy to share with you my first-ever travel article to appear in So Scottsdale! on page 104. Travel has always been something that drives me; I love new and different cultures, cuisines and countries. In April, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to venture off to Puerto Vallarta, with one of my closest friends along for the ride. We ate, sipped and lounged our way through three gorgeous sister resorts, and I’m already getting the itch to return. Look back at this journey and follow my other travels on Instagram at @young_chelsea. Truly, it’s that same hunger for new experiences that brought me to Arizona – and for that, I am very thankful. While it may not be autumn in the Valley just yet, there’s a promise of something in the air. Here’s to seeing what unfolds this month.

t seems like every week there is a new product or service guaranteeing a quick fix for troubled or aging skin. Whether it’s a celebrity-endorsed plug on social media or reports on the latest skin-resurfacing technology awaiting FDA approval, these services almost always promise instant gratification at a high price.

While it’s true there continues to be incredible advancements in the skin care industry, a single truth remains: Great skin is never the result of a one-time treatment or miracle cream. Certified esthetician and owner of Beauty by Alicia (www. beautybyalicia.guru) med-spa services, Alicia Neal is disputing the notion held by many that beautiful skin is a luxury item only a select few can attain. “I believe that skin care and antiaging is never about a single product,” Neal says. “Skin care is about the process, out-smarting and building resistance to skin conditions, and creating a treatment plan for healthy skin.” With more than a decade of experience as an esthetician, Neal works to educate her clients and to discover the best combination of treatments and products that work for them, as well as a care regime they can realistically manage. “Your regime should fit your lifestyle – it could be a luxurious day of beauty or a simple homemade beauty regimen, but skin care must be recognized as a necessity and not just a luxury.” Neal, who “fell in love with idea of skin care” after her first facial as a teenager, moved to San Diego from her hometown of Bullhead City, Arizona, at only 19 to start esthetic training. While in school, she met a respected esthetician and cosmetic chemist who owned a successful medical day spa, where Neal honed her craft during and years after her training. “This experience paved the way for my esthetic journey,” says Neal. “Through it, I gained a wealth of knowledge and the cutting edge to educate individuals on the importance of keeping our skin’s integrity intact.” Neal returned to Arizona – this time to Scottsdale – and worked independently for sevens years before launching her skin care practice, Beauty by Alicia, last year. She now operates out of House for Brides in Old Town, providing a variety of medical-grade skin care treatments from facials to LED Light Therapy, thermal rejuvenation and more. She also offers a range of cosmetic services including

waxing, organic airbrush spray tans and eyelash extensions. “My most popular services are my facial treatments; I’m very thorough,” Neal says. “People love coming in and knowing that they are going to leave with long-lasting results and benefits. They are guaranteed to receive the best care for their skin; I take no short cuts.” It’s this same “take no short cuts” mentality that translates into Neal building her business. “Every challenge is an opportunity to grow,” Neal says. “Owning and operating your own business is not for the faint of heart. Creating Beauty by Alicia has taught me so much in terms of timing, creating the right atmosphere and customer service for my clients and being self-accountable.”

Women Helping Women One of the most important parts of growing her small business is expanding her network – both her client Rolodex and fellow businesswomen making headway in their industries.

“As a young woman and business owner, community is important and I like to keep company of like-minded individuals!” One way Neal connects with other female entrepreneurs is through her involvement with YWCA. As co-chair of their Young Women’s Forum, Neal is responsible for organizing quarterly events catered toward young working women that provide a place to connect with one another, share strategies and discuss ideas on that event’s thought-provoking topics. “Being a part of the YWCA community is enlightening,” Neal says. “It’s a great venue to engage with young professional woman who you might not be able to encounter otherwise. It’s also a great way to build connections and a professional community.” Neal is also active in the Wedding Event Network (WEN) that, similarly to her location at the House for Brides, helps to connect people working within the multifaceted wedding industry. “WEN provides an opportunity to learn from others,” says Neal, explaining she’s built relationships with wedding planners, photographers and florists who provide trustworthy referrals to couples’ shopping vendors. She adds that it’s important for a bride or groom to consult an esthetician early as part of their wedding planning, even offering a useful 12-month beauty checklist to help keep engaged couples on track – again, driving her overall message that skin care is a process. Still, Neal is hopeful that as her business continues to grow, so will the public’s knowledge of proper skin care. This sentiment is especially important for Scottsdale residents, where sun damage is prevalent and skin cancer is a very real threat, but also very preventable. “Our skin is our largest organ. It serves us a lifetime, and within that life it protects, insulates and cushions our deep organs,” Neal says. “We owe it to ourselves to incorporate whatever type of acknowledgment we can to our skin and treat it well. Even with little effort, the skin can benefit.”

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, stylist and color expert at Sachi Studios

Rodney Gentry is one of those people whose Midwestern charm and enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. And in his line of work, that’s certainly a plus. Gentry is possibly the Valley’s most adored hair stylist. His clients (some of them might better be described as fans) will happily travel across state lines in order to have him handle their tresses. Many of them simply trust nobody else with their hair. Having operated his own salon in Chicago before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry brings big city expertise to the Valley, which he combines with his own unique passion for styling and coloring at Sachi Studios. Each client enjoys a truly personalized service. Gentry considers the condition and history of the hair before recommending a treatment program, style and (if desired) color. His focus is on nurturing hair back to full health at the same time as providing stunning styles and fabulous colors. “It’s my goal to make each client feel truly beautiful – and to leave them with a style that they can easily recreate themselves every day,” he says. Part of this comes down to the right products. Gentry only uses the very

best brands available, not skimping when it comes to choosing those products that will bring about dramatic improvements in the hair’s condition. This applies to everything, from daily shampoos to the color treatments that he uses, which are enzyme-based rather than peroxide-based. This means they enhance the condition of the hair as well as give it a wonderfully vibrant color. Color is Gentry’s true passion. From full hair makeovers to the subtlest of highlights or lowlights, he works with his clients to select the colors that are right for their skin tone, the shape of their face and even their preferred color of clothing. “Every single person is unique in their coloring, which is why personalized consultation is so important,” he explains. “You really have to care about each and every client in order to bring out the best in their hair. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to beautiful hair!” Gentry also believes that it is important to stay abreast of trends. From the Oscars to the latest catwalk shows, he’s up to speed with seasonal styles and colors in order to enable each of his clients to achieve a touch of Hollywood

glamour. From super straight blonde locks to superbly highlighted plaits with the tiniest of accessories woven in, Gentry is available to provide advice and guidance on how those in the Valley can look their very best this summer, both color-wise and style-wise. If you haven’t yet checked out Sachi Studios then you’re not giving your hair the love it deserves!

Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

THE FUTURE OF TUTORING

Keith Rezendes is changing the way students learn BY KELLY POTTS

K

eith Rezendes is a learner by nature. He has taught high school and collegelevel courses in math, chemistry and business, and he has been a tutor for more than 20 years at almost every major tutoring firm and agency. After being a professor and tutor on the side, Rezendes decided to take his love of teaching to a new platform – an on-demand tutoring service, MindSpree. “I created MindSpree because I saw this need for on-demand tutoring,” Rezendes says. “I had students emailing me at all hours, and I wanted to be able to help them the best I could. While on vacation one day, I came up with this idea.” MindSpree is a social learning platform that connects tutors with students’ needs, offering more than 290 subjects ranging from algebra to yoga. By utilizing a sharing economy, MindSpree sources tutors across the U.S. to share their knowledge and expertise with students. “The idea of this is to let the whole world teach,” Rezendes says. “We all have skill sets that someone wants, so why not share it with everyone?” There are more than 5,000 tutors, and MindSpree works hard behind the scenes so the tutors can focus solely on their students. After all, Rezendes says, student success and tutor happiness are most important to the company. Learn more at www.mindspree.com.

What is your favorite way to unwind? Hit up a local cigar shop! What are some spots you frequent in the Valley? My family and I love North Italia. We also love to try new restaurants and just meet new people. You never know who you are going to meet and in what way they will enrich your life. Where is your favorite place to travel? San Francisco. My wife is from there, and it’s about as close to home as I can get! I’m originally from Hawaii – so if I’m not there, I want to be in San Francisco. Anywhere by the water is a good place to be.

A TASTE OF PARIS

Linda Schneider’s 21 Cakes offers French-inspired pastries BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

L

inda Schneider’s culinary schooling began in her family’s kitchen, and particularly under the mentorship of her grandmother. The exquisite aromas and flavors of her grandmother’s baked goods urged Schneider to further her studying in the land of culinary excellence: France. Schneider went to culinary school in Paris, where she perfected the art of macarons, as well as cakes and cupcakes. “It was helpful and inspirational to be in the city known for its pastries,” she says. “I would also like to mention that I read The Cake Bible two times!” Schneider brought her je ne sais quoi pastry skills to the Valley when she opened 21 Cakes (www.21cakes.com) in 2011. 21 Cakes started as a wholesale business, and is now a retail shop providing Phoenicians with delicious homemade desserts presented in a beautiful setting. And what began as a cupcakery has evolved into a full-service bakery, with treats ranging from cupcakes and cookies to Parisian macarons and specialty cakes. “I love developing new flavors and my partner, Cisco Zazueta, loves the design aspect. He’s a true food artist,” Schneider says. “We try to offer things that a customer may not find in another bakery.” Between Schneider and Zazueta, 21 Cakes is always whipping up innovative, decadent treats that will transport you to Paris with just one bite.

Etc.

Tell us about the classes 21 Cakes offers. I offer Parisian macaron classes as well as baking and decorating classes. The classes are hands-on baking in our kitchen, just the way we do, using the same ingredients. Students take home everything they make. Class schedules are posted on 21 Cakes’ Facebook page, or anyone interested may call the store for a schedule. What do you love most about living in Arizona? I’m originally from Pennsylvania. As a foodie, I’ve gained an appreciation for Southwest and Mexican cuisines since moving here. I’ve even developed some recipes incorporating these flavors. Are you currently working on other recipes or flavors for the fall season? I am always working on new products, new flavors and expanding what we offer at 21 Cakes. The upcoming fall and winter season will be full of yummy surprises! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

CIGARS AND W SUITS A sophisticated pastime influences Granison Shines’ ensembles BY KELLY POTTS PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

hen you ask Granison Shines, CEO of Blue Flame Cigar Society (www. bfcsphoenix.com), about his style, he will say it is “laid-back, relaxed, put together and social … much like the vibe of Blue Flame.” Blue Flame Cigar Society is Arizona’s first roaming cigar club, and it is just that – laid-back, relaxed, put together and social. The cigar club partners with local eateries or bars for pairing events, which allow people to mingle over an enjoyment of cigars. “I wanted to create something that was a place where like-minded people could go, smoke together and unwind,” Shines says. “That’s exactly what was created and what our members have come to expect: A relaxed social club.” Simply put, style and cigars go hand in hand for Shines. “A good cigar never goes out of style, just like great fashion will never go out of style,” says Shines, who’s particularly fond of tailored suits. “Even though I love a laid-back look, I do also love a nice, crisp suit,” he says. “I consider myself a suit kind of guy. I love to be well-groomed.” Noting that a good suit is also always en vogue, Shines draws parallels between his business and his styling endeavors. “Cigar and fashion tastes may transform, he says. “But the essence and an easygoing feeling will always be there and drive both passions.” What is one of your favorite go-to places in the Valley? I love The Casablanca Lounge. It’s one of the best gems in the state. Where do you like to vacation? I love California. Huntington Beach is one of my favorite places on earth, hands down. Once you live in California, it never really leaves you. When you are not enjoying a nice cigar, what is your favorite pastime? Most people would be surprised to know I train in martial arts. It’s a fun way to get a little exercise!

my Packard Berry, the CEO of Digital Wire 360, is no stranger to fashion or the digital advertising world. After working at a few large agencies throughout her career, Berry decided it was time to go all in on her dreams of opening an agency. “It was something I had always wanted to do, so I took that leap and opened up Digital Wire 360,” Berry says. “Digital media is such an interesting space, one that has to constantly reinvent itself, much like the fashion world.” Berry has always been into fashion and bringing inspiration from her favorite designers into her work was a no-brainer. “I take cues from Tom Ford and how he reinvented his runway show. I follow Stella McCartney and how she paved a space for working women,” she says. “These are all people who influence not only my wardrobe but my work life as well.” Taking fashion into her agency is something Berry has always been proud of. “We all have our own influences, and I let fashion be mine. Everyone at my agency comes from different backgrounds, so we all collaborate together and what comes out is something beautiful. Like a crazy fashion print, it works – and it works well.”

How do you unwind after work? I love to sketch; I always wanted to be a fashion designer. And yoga is a good way to find peace. But hanging out with my husband and son is by far the best way to unwind after work. What season do you like to dress for the most? Fall is my favorite. I love to layer and mix and match prints and patterns. What’s your favorite part of an outfit? The shoes! I love a good shoe. And, all of my biggest life decisions and choices have revolved around shoes. When I met my husband, he commented on my shoes. When I went on a big job interview early in my career, they commented on my shoes. Shoes will take you places!

INJEXTS: Take a dip in the Fountain of Youth Looking and feeling your best is something that most people strive for on a daily basis. Between going to the gym and watching what you eat, it seems the list of what to do to achieve this goal is endless. One thing that can be made easy, however, is aging gracefully. Injexts, Scottsdale’s only injectable bar, was developed and founded by Dr. Ashleigh Ortega to help restore a youthful look in minutes. Injexts is a on demand injectable aesthetic practice that makes it convenient and easy for patients to book an appointment, receive treatment and have a refreshed look within minutes, without the hassle of traveling to a med spa or physician’s office. “I love helping people age at a rate they’re comfortable with, help them look and feel their best and doing the injectables safely,” she says. And what’s not to love about the simple, expedient approach to antiaging that Injexts provides: it’s the fountain of youth on demand. Dr. Ortega began her career in the medical field in 1999, as a registered nurse at Yale. From there, she relocated to Scottsdale, where she earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Arizona State University, one of the foremost DNP programs in the country. “One of the many perks of coming to Injexts is you are getting the treatment of a doctor of nursing practice, but the personalization and heart of your favorite nurse,” says Dr. Ortega. “Having that personalized care is critical to making everyone feel comfortable and relaxed while reversing the appearance of time.” Injexts offers Botox, Kybella and fillers to minimize lines and wrinkles, and vitamin B12, which can improve energy, metabolism and sleep. Each client is given an individualized consultation beforehand in order to determine their specific needs, and a post-treatment assessment to ensure that the desired results have been achieved. Injexts also offers exceptional antiaging skincare from SkinMedica, a product

line that Dr. Ortega hand-picked based on the company’s extensive research. “I want everyone to come in and feel comfortable, and help them pick a product that fits best with their life,” says Dr. Ortega. “At our initial consultation I make sure that each product is picked for the right reasons, and will be the best fit for you. We will take all the time we need to make sure that each decision that is made is the right one and make sure the patient is comfortable.” All aesthetic practitioners at Injexts are nurse practitioners and/or registered nurses and have received their certificate in advanced injectable training to ensure that each customer’s aesthetic injectable experience is at their demand by world class healthcare providers.

While interior design is an ancient art, with evidence of feng shui being practiced as early as 4000 B.C., it is an everchanging and growing industry. Today, a home’s interior can be as important as curb appeal in expressing style, staying on trend and creating a harmonious living environment.

Scottsdale interior designer Morgan Keister has an expert eye for collaborating with clients to create their own special space. Not only is she helping to bring style to more homes in the Valley, she is now leaving her mark on major new development projects that are sure to be a staple of Scottsdale’s aesthetics. “I have always had an interest in home construction and architecture, which led me to interior design,” Keister says. “Design is something that has always felt natural to me.” A professional designer for 15 years, Keister started her career in Bellevue, Washington, where she worked with highend clients throughout the prestigious suburbs of Hunts Point, Mercer Island and Medina, the last of which is known for residents including Bill Gates. She moved to Scottsdale with her husband in 2005, a transition she was nervous about at first. “My husband was able to convince me that Arizona would be a wonderful place to live, and that there was plenty of opportunity in my industry. I made the leap and never looked back. I have loved living in Scottsdale.” Keister immediately familiarized herself with the Scottsdale market, finding work as a senior designer for a high-end kitchen and design firm. She soon built her reputation and became known for her talents, ultimately deciding in 2006 to launch her own interior design firm – Morgan Kofron Design – using her maiden moniker, Kofron. In 2012, she won the Thermador Kitchen Design Challenge, giving her national exposure by featuring her work in the company’s national ad campaigns. Ten years later, business is booming for Keister. She works with clients to provide everything from new construction and remodel work to any and all interior design services in-between. She has built a clientele roster of businesses, development

partnerships and everyday individuals. “My favorite part of running my business is seeing a happy client at the end of a project,” she says. “Working with someone to create their personal space is a very intimate collaboration. When clients are pleased with the results, it feels really good.” Being able to provide her clients with something truly personal requires Keister to find new and exciting sources of inspiration and incorporate trends for unique results. “I love to pull inspiration from history and my travels around the world,” she says. “From the spice markets of Marrakech, I’ve taken inspiration from the extraordinarily vibrant colors contrasted with rustic cobblestone. Tokyo, with its less-is-more mentality and respect of nature, feels timeless yet so ahead of its time. My inspiration seems to come from things that are unconventional.” Experiencing other cultures and seeing the architecture and design that they have used for generations is certainly a great influence in Keister’s designs, but she notes that she is most inspired by her everyday surroundings. “Sometimes a piece of art can inspire a mood or an attitude, and I want to somehow manifest that in my work, whether it feels sexy, or joyful or peaceful. The mood may be translated into my designs in the form of texture, color or shape.” The key to translating her world findings is incorporating them into trends. Thanks to the explosion of social media and designed-focused websites, clients often already have the look they want in mind, but it is up to Keister to personalize those visions and bring them to life. “Working in design, you have to understand what the client’s objective is while pushing the envelope on what you feel is going to make the project stand out and be successful. The process can sometimes be strenuous until people see the final outcome.”

and risk-taking with success.” Working alongside design group Private Label International, who she says “set the tone for the project,” Keister was able to flex her creative muscles and incorporate luxury in ways that just can’t be done to typical homes. “I really enjoyed creating this vision and designing the unique lobby floor of tile and gold metal detail,” she says, adding that the use of special touches like a one-of-a-kind gym floor created even more elegance and lends to the attraction of the entire space. Keister says she admires Deco’s attention to detail in their projects and the overall quality they provide. “Deco takes the time to brand every aspect of the design in a way that gives each project its own distinctive and authentic characteristics,” she says, adding that she believes Deco has raised the bar for Scottsdale luxury living. “It is exciting to be part of a team that is helping to redefine the way people think of our city.” With additional Deco Communities projects – Edison Midtown and Inspire Downtown Scottsdale – in the works, Keister’s designs are certain to become synonymous with luxury living in the Valley. She hopes to continue to expand and evolve her aesthetics through more world travel, with 29 countries down and many more to go, noting that the cobbled streets and pristine waters of Croatia have been calling her name. While it’s yet to be known what will inspire Keister’s next design project, there’s no doubt that her keen eye and collaborative visions have landed her in a good place, one she feels thankful for each day. “I feel very grateful for all of the opportunities I have had in the industry,” she says. “And I look forward to many more in the future.” To learn more about Morgan Kofron Design, visit www.morgankofron.com.

This is especially true in Scottsdale, whose trend-savvy residents are shifting away from the traditional Southwest designs and many transplants are incorporating styles reflective of their hometowns. “As more people relocate here, I am seeing more international design inspiration as well as coastal design influence,” Keister says. “As a designer, it is exciting to see Scottsdale evolve from the desert colors and adobe style that have been the mainstay of our city to a more cosmopolitan vibe. Overall, Scottsdale has a great mix of style and design for all different tastes.” One major trend she sees is how people approach the design process and are more creative in the way space is used, while emphasizing personalization. “Open space is a major current trend. People are re-evaluating how they use space and are open to what they want – rather than the old ‘should’ beliefs of design.”

A L U X E PR OJ ECT

This month, Scottsdale will soon see one of Keister’s largest collaborative designs with the opening of ENVY Residences, a $47 million luxury condominium project developed by Deco Communities (www. decocommunities.com). Set to be the ultimate in luxury living, ENVY’s design scheme is reminiscent of the over-the-top glamour one would expect to find at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, with owner amenities on-par with the high-end towers of New York City. Keister’s work caught the eye of Rob Lyles, the founder of Deco Communities and the one who conceptualized ENVY as an elite lifestyle brand. He credits Keister and the design team for bringing the vision of “Unique, Glamorous and Bold” to life. “Deco is not afraid to take risks in design,” Keister says. “They are comfortable in what they offer and relate creativity

ARTFUL MUSINGS FIVE LOCAL ARTISTS BLENDING THE CREATIVE CULTURES OF PHOENIX AND SCOTTSDALE

he Valley’s art scene has long been viewed as two separate cultures: Scottsdale with its traditional Western art, conjuring images of cowboys and turquoise associated with the Southwest, versus Phoenix’s contemporary, urban aesthetic focused in the downtown districts. Both are respected in their own right, with Scottsdale’s longrunning Thursday ArtWalk and Phoenix’s popular First Fridays, and both have an important place in the Valley’s arts culture. But recently, the communities have started to overlap, with a growing sophistication in Phoenix and cultural expansion to Uptown, and a more relaxed and abstract influence percolating to Scottsdale. John Gleason

We spoke with five local artists who are embracing the everdeveloping art scene. They shared how the Valley inspires them and what they envision regarding the future of the area’s culture. Self-taught sculptor John Gleason’s career has spanned more than 20 years, giving him firsthand insight to how the Valley’s art scene has grown over time. “Arizona, like the rest of the U. S., is seeing great changes in the art world right now, from where and how we see art to how and where we buy it,” Gleason says. “Phoenix and Scottsdale have a thriving art community, and I see a growth of the arts throughout the Valley every year.” As co-founder of Quan’tum Art, Inc., a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the Scottsdale Art District, Gleason has seen the shift away from Scottsdale’s more traditional Western art to include more diverse and contemporary imagery. “In Arizona, collectors of Western art are changing. The population of the Valley is more national and international, and we are losing the Western art galleries,” Gleason says. “Younger generations are seeking more diverse and sophisticated imagery that speaks to a renewed interest in art and sculptures.” It is this sophisticated, contemporary aesthetic that is reflective in Gleason’s work. Primarily a manipulator of copper, his pieces incorporate other contrasting materials including glass, clay, wood and stone. SEPTEMBER 2016 |

“I love the versatility which can be changed through the processes of heat, patina and acid,” says Gleason, who has created both two- and three-dimensional pieces. “My copper and glass wall sculptures have been collected by art lovers, municipalities, and are in private and corporate collections.” And while he sees Western art fading in the traditional sense, he is still heavily influenced by the natural beauty of the Southwest, particularly inspired by the colorful geology and landscapes in the Four Corners region. “I have spent much time creating sculptures in and around the El Morro National Monument in Ramah, New Mexico,” says Gleason, adding that some of his personal favorite installations can be found at the national park as well as nearby it. “I find the area inspiring, both creatively and spiritually.”

Frank Ybarra

Gleason is also adamant that he doesn’t take his work too seriously and recognizes art is a luxury meant for enjoyment. The sentiment conveyed by his work resonates with the attitude of the emerging local art community: “Happy. Hopefully though provoking. Contemporary.” But what Gleason does take seriously is the role art plays in our culture and the legacy it leaves for posterity. “Over time, history has shown us that in the end, all we leave behind is art and architecture. Artists document our existence.” Even with the shift away from more traditional Western imagery, the influence the genre has on local artists is a lasting one. Such is the case for neo-Cubist illustrator Frank Ybarra, whose iconic images of the Southwest have made him one of the Valley’s most sought-after artists. The Phoenix native frequently pulls imagery from the desert’s physical landmarks and depicts colorful scenes of American family life with Southwest influences. As a Mexican-American, his cultural heritage is apparent in his subject matter, while the familiar images invoke a pop-art quality that differentiates his work from his Western artist predecessors. “I find inspiration from the images in our desert environment and my Mexican culture and family memories,” Ybarra says, adding that one of his favorite pieces is a tribute to his father called Fanfare for the Common Trabajador. Because of his embodiment of Southwestern roots, five of Ybarra’s images were selected to appear on the Arizona Centennial advertising campaign in 2012 and used on banners, SO SCOTTSDALE! |

billboards, print ads and more. His work was also nominated for the Governor’s Art Award this year. Active in Xico Inc., an arts organization that features Mexican and Native American artists, Ybarra believes it is crucial for the Valley to support artists who represent the foundations of our culture saying, “We grew up here and have experienced our desert environment as well as the fact that Phoenix has grown tremendously in recent decades.” Art enthusiasts can view Ybarra’s current exhibit at Casa de Artistas in Old Town Scottsdale, which is part of Thursday ArtWalk events, however, Ybarra notes that the Valley’s artistic growth is most apparent in the downtown district. “It’s great to see the activity on First Fridays in Downtown Phoenix. Lots of new galleries and art spaces are popping up there. With the general interest in the events that are happening downtown, I feel that it can only get better.” For some creative types, the Valley is a source of inspiration that’s actively sought out, rather than ingrained in their upbringing. For mixed-media sculptor and installation artist Christine Cassano, the appeal of our desert’s unique and “harsh beauty” brought her to the Valley from the east coast a decade ago. “Living in the desert, I’m constantly reminded of nature’s ability to adapt and our desert environment,” Cassano says. “The landscape, plants and animals are the most stunning examples of that. They all have this harsh beauty reflected in their patterns, textures and armors, each offering deep secrets of pure adaptation and survival. It is that harsh beauty that very much influences aspects within my work.” Cassano’s general style is a hybrid of industrial and organic elements, resulting in art that some may consider, “like the desert itself, both harsh and beautiful.” She works with a multitude of contrasting materials, including clay, wood, stone, plastic, concrete, circuitry, metal and found objects to create her large-scale installations, assemblage pieces and sculptures. A perfect example of her contrasting vision is Jawbreaker, a mixed-media sculpture composed of horse jaw bone, cast metal, concrete and moss, which was recently awarded first place in Scottsdale’s Tilt Gallery’s “Infinite Possibility: Art of Tomorrow” international juried exhibition. From her shared warehouse studio, Cassano is able to connect with like-minded individuals and keep a finger on the pulse of the local art scene. She cites the economic downturn as changing the gallery business model and the way we consume art, with many artists transforming their once traditional exhibition galleries to multi-use, shared art spaces to cover overhead. “It’s on the shoulders of emerging and established artists to continue to be resourceful, find places to exhibit their work, and stay on top of exhibit and marketing opportunities.” Much like becoming an artist isn’t neccessarily a straigtforward path, the journey into art itself isn’t as straightforward for some. As is the case for Kevin Coran, an “accidental artist” who developed his passion by building decorative fountains from scraps leftover from house projects – and then gaining the attention of friends. After half a decade of truck driving during the day and creating at night, he became a full-time artist 10 years ago. “My work could be called abstract expressionism, but I usually just call it contemporary abstract,” says Coran, adding that SO SCOTTSDALE! |

sophisticated and professional. Almost every city in the Valley now has a public art program – people everywhere recognize the value and importance of art to our quality of life.” Another fan of Downtown Phoenix’s artistic growth is graphic designer-turned-artist, Sara Becker, who began painting 15 years ago. A self-described “expressive colorist” she creates her artistic vision by layering paints, sanding and reapplying the paint for deep texture and luminous colors. Inspired by the natural palette and textures of the Valley’s mountain preserves, her work is reminiscent of the Southwest’s sunsets juxtaposed with minimalist symbols and modern text. “I find inspiration in the act of artistic creation itself, in the serenity of yoga and in certain words and symbols that act as a portal to those places for me,” Becker says. “Sometimes the paint itself takes me where I want to go.” As a yoga enthusiast, the practice is commonplace both in Becker’s work and life, with pieces currently on display at Modern Yoga in Scottsdale. No longer limited to traditional galleries or art shows, more and more artists are connecting with like-minded businesses to showcase their work, or turning to more collaborative, shared spaces. “The arts always have the potential to reflect the local culture. It’s important that Phoenix sees itself through the eyes of many different artists. Amazingly, no two are ever the same.” An avid supporter of Scottsdale’s ArtWalk and Phoenix’s Frist Fridays — where she has upcoming shows at First Studio and Olney Gallery on Roosevelt – Becker sees the most growth in artists’ willingness to share their creativity and opening their studios to broader audiences. “I love that artists here are so supportive of each other and there is a diversity of visual expression. The art scene is always changing, as new artists, styles and imagery are put out there, and their influences ripple through our community.”

he’s not particularly fond of labels, as neither description communicates the whimsical illusions and balance his pieces create. His visions are heavily influenced from his experience working on cars and driving trucks, and he continues to repurpose mechanical parts to give his work an “post-industrial” feel. Also an avid science fiction reader, he is driven by imagination and his own curiosity. “I often want to dig in and see how something works, how I can build it, what makes it look and feel right and, ultimately, how to give it life,” Coran says. “Creating art is not an intellectual pursuit for me but one of communicating in ways that words cannot.” Coran’s creations are highly sought after all over the country, with one of this favorite pieces, Knot Me, recently being sold to a company Washington D.C. The sculpture captured the imaginations of many, including the City of Surprise, which recently commissioned a larger version. Other pieces can be seen around the state, including Pearson & Company in the Scottsdale Art District and galleries in Chandler, Avondale and Prescott. In addition to his own artistic endeavors, Coran is passionate about supporting other local artist and strengthening the Valley’s art community though his involvement in the Arizona Artists Guild, Phoenix Art Museum’s Contemporary Forum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and 5 Arts Circle. As a way to give back, he also holds events for mid-career artists, groups from Mesa Community College’s Sculptural Welding classes and for 3-D printing. “Artists are the most vibrant part of any community. They generally know no bounds and are able to see the ‘same old things’ in brand-new ways.” As for the growth of the Valley’s art scene, Coran says it’s been fun to experience firsthand. “The local art scene is absolutely amazing. Downtown Phoenix was not even on the art radar 10-plus years ago, and now it may well be the center of the Valley’s art culture,” Coran says. “As it’s grown, the art being exhibited has gotten more SEPTEMBER 2016 |

Exceeding Expectations

Bryan W. Gawley, MD, founder, Gawley Plastic Surgery

DR. BRYAN GAWLEY isn’t your average plastic surgeon but one who makes the impossible possible. With a discerning eye for detail, artisan hands that work miracles, and unparalleled customer care, Dr. Gawley doesn’t just meet the expectations of his patients but exceeds every last one of them. Dr. Gawley has called the Valley home for the last 30 years, and for 11 of those, he has been a board-certified Arizona plastic surgeon. In 2005, he opened his own practice, Gawley Plastic Surgery, in North Scottsdale. Gawley Plastic Surgery offers patients a broad spectrum of high-level procedures accompanied by high-level outcomes. Aesthetic surgery of the face, breast and body are his specialties. In addition to his cosmetic practice, Dr. Gawley has an unprecedented passion working with breast cancer patients. “Renewing a patient’s self-esteem and body image after breast cancer is an invaluable service and one that I am proud of,” he says. What began as one practice has now flourished into two additional and expanded businesses, all under Gawley Plastic Surgery. The first is a state-of-the-art outpatient surgical center adjacent to Dr. Gawley’s North Scottsdale practice. The second business, MD Skin Lounge, is a satellite skin care and wellness center. MD Skin Lounge offers patients a lavish, comfortable environment where they can address their cosmetic goals with a team of highly qualified skin care and beauty experts. “We offer patients everything from the full spectrum of skin rejuvenating laser treatments to the most current aesthetic and non-invasive services including injectables and CoolSculpting, plus a juice bar, makeup bar and skin care products bar.” Whether you create a unique blueprint specific to your nonsurgical skin care needs or undergo a cosmetic procedure, you can trust that you are in the hands of the most qualified experts in the industry. In fact, Dr. Gawley and his team of 25 employees are viewed in such esteemed light by others that their practice has become a hub for advanced medical training.

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 60

“Because of our extensive patient outreach and cutting-edge techniques and skill sets, my team and I have been fortunate enough to be chosen as a training center to others in the medical field,” he says. Indeed, Gawley Plastic Surgery, North Scottsdale Outpatient Surgery Center and MD Skin Lounge are at the forefront of being the most highly notable cosmetic practices in the nation. Between his entrepreneurial spirit, hunger for advanced education and expressed mentorship to others, Dr. Gawley was honored with Allergan’s Black Diamond Status; an award that names his practice one of the top 100 in the nation. The acclaim attached with such a prestigious award, though, is subpar to the heart of Gawley’s practice: his patients. “Overall, I want patients to have an amazing and memorable experience from start to finish no matter what their clinical treatment is,” he says. “My mission is quite simple: over deliver to over exceed any and all patient expectations.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GAWLEY PLASTIC SURGERY, CALL 480.842.8606 OR VISIT WWW.GAWLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.

Specialists in Healthy, Beautiful Skin

Anne Walter, MD, of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists DR. ANNE WALTER wanted to be a physician ever since she was a little girl, and when she discovered dermatology, she knew she had found her calling. “Dermatology offers a great balance of surgery, cosmetics and general medical issues and provides an opportunity to build longstanding relationships with patients and their families.” Dr. Anne Walter is the founder of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists, which offers expert medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological care in a comfortable, boutique practice. “We provide services for every skin care need – childhood birthmarks and rashes, acne, psoriasis, allergic reactions, skin cancer screenings, skin cancer surgery, Botox, fillers, laser treatments and everything in between.” Dr. Walter focuses on educating her patients to encourage healthier skin. Living in Arizona, a state with plenty of outdoor activities and abundant sunshine, forces us to be aware of the damaging effects of the sun. “I think sun protective clothing is the wave of the future. It allows you to take advantage of the outdoors while effortlessly preventing sun damage.” This doctor practices what she preaches! When she isn’t discussing skin protection with her patients, you’ll find her shielding her alabaster skin with a large floppy hat, long sleeves and her favorite sunblock. After all, as Dr. Walter says, you can’t start protecting yourself too early! Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. “As a fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon, I do my best to turn a stressful diagnosis like skin cancer into a positive experience for my patients,” Dr. Walter says. Dr. Walter also provides aesthetic services which can help correct sun damage. “I love keeping up with the latest treatments

and technology to help my patients look and feel their best.” Dr. Walter is originally from Northern California. She attended Harvard University for her undergraduate degree, attended the University of Southern California for medical school, completed her internship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, and trained at Northwestern University for residency. She also completed a fellowship in procedural dermatology, specializing in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and cosmetic dermatology. After spending years in cold weather climates, Dr. Walter and her husband decided to trade in their snow shovels for flip-flops to be closer to their family. “My husband and I joke that Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists started as our honeymoon! We opened the practice in April 2015, a week after our wedding, and have been enjoying it since.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DERMATOLOGY & SKIN SURGERY SPECIALISTS, CALL 480.418.1087 OR VISIT WWW.SKINSPECIALISTSOFAZ.COM.

In Good Hands Michael J. Fitzmaurice, MD, of Fitzmaurice Hand Institute

EACH HAND HOUSES 27 bones along with numerous muscles, nerves, vessels and tendons. While it may be compact in size, the anatomy of the human hand is anything but simple. Dr. Michael Fitzmaurice’s concentration is on this small, yet complex, part of the body. During his residency in general surgery, Dr. Fitzmaurice became interested in reconstructive and vascular surgery. These two specialties, among many others, are involved in the specialty of hand surgery itself. After completing his studies in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Fitzmaurice moved to the desert to jumpstart his hand surgery career. Fitzmaurice Hand Institute opened in the Valley in 2012. For four years, Dr. Fitzmaurice has been providing patients with the very best and most advanced care that hand surgery has to offer. He has become a name that people trust and a leader in the field. Dr. Fitzmaurice’s practice is just as much clinical as it is educational. Ongoing research and development is conducted daily in order to discover new and improved ways to help patients feel better faster. “We are always reevaluating procedures and outcomes to deliver the most effective care possible,” Dr. Fitzmaurice says. His backgrounds in mechanical engineering and medicine make Dr. Fitzmaurice a true medical pioneer. He uses a number of new techniques and procedures that are only available at his practice. “I utilized every minimally invasive surgery technique during the early part of my career and realized the loss with some of these,” Dr. Fitzmaurice says. “This is why we developed the EndoTech surgical instrumentation system – to provide a safer and more effective alternative.” Patients with common conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendinitis and arthritis are guaranteed optimal results with rapid return to life, work and activity because of Dr. Fitzmaurice’s minimally invasive developments like the EndoTech instrumentation. “This instrumentation is unlike any other endoscopic procedure because it allows a complete visualization of all structures involved like critical nerve and tendons. Other techniques that have been available led to injuries to these structures due to incomplete visualization,” he explains.

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 62

Along with minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Fitzmaurice utilizes regenerative medicine and anti-aging techniques in his practice. Stem cell treatment and platelet rich plasma, for example, are just a few non-operative treatment options available. “We have also developed a stem cell reconstructive technique for thumb arthritis called Arthro-Rejuvenation, which improves recovery significantly.” Dr. Fitzmaurice’s innovative developments are moving outside of his practice – literally. He is in the process of developing a center of excellence, an extension of his practice that will offer patients same-day services including urgent care evaluation, clinical evaluation and surgical intervention. “We specialize in local-only anesthetics, which provides patients with a small numbing medicine that makes same-day surgery possible,” he says. “This minimizes time away from home and significantly decreases costs involved with multiple appointments.” Patients aren’t only in good hands, but they are in the best hands when under the care of Dr. Fitzmaurice. drawing with charcoal. He feels the most fascinating medium of art, however, is the actual human body. Dr. Malek has combined his skill and eye for figurative art with his detailed knowledge of human anatomy to create natural beauty in each and every patient. This combined appreciation for art and science has made him highly skilled and effective in his profession. He values the preservation of anatomy and insists on offering his patients only procedures that provide safe and lasting results. Dr. Malek believes successful outcomes in cosmetic surgery always start with a sense of good taste by the surgeon, and he prioritizes communication and understanding of his patients as it pertains to their results. As one of the leading plastic surgeons in the Valley, Dr. Malek utilizes his personal and artistic approach to deliver the right results the first time. Beyond that, Dr. Kaushesh is at the forefront of taking the fear out of dentistry; he is the only master dentist locally to offer advanced cosmetic, high-end implant and anxiety-free IV sedation for any procedure under one roof. With the IV sedation, virtually any procedure – from simple fillings to advanced full mouth makeovers and implants – can be performed under conscious sedation. With this, patients can get multiple procedures that usually take many visits done in just one or two appointments. Plus, patients can relax, something that Dr. Kaushesh is passionate about. Dr. Kaushesh became board-certified in dental implants, and achieved three mastership and diplomate level awards in general dentistry and sedation. He remains the only dentist to have all four, which are the highest achievements in the field. “These credentials are best utilized in offering life-changing dentistry to my patients and I am glad to be of help,” says Dr. Kaushesh, who with his humble and positive traits, passes that attitude on to his caring staff. “I enjoy the field because I can truly find myself valuable and productive through my attitude towards patient care,” he says. The pulse of Serenity Dental lies in its philosophy to treat patients holistically, listen to their needs, and make actionable plans that create unique solutions. Dr. Kaushesh and his staff also recognize that the amount of skill needed to keep people smiling

and functioning on a daily basis is paramount. “We are proud to be part of a small percentage of dental offices that are truly experts in handling complex care,” he says. “We give our patients more options because we’re capable of so many more procedures.” Outside of his practice, Dr. Kaushesh plays both the student and teacher role. He frequents courses in the field to continuously challenge himself as well as learn about new developments. He also teaches at the Academy of General Dentistry and American Academy of Implant Dentistry to help aid budding dentists and specialists. From simple dental work to more complex work, Dr. Kaushesh offers many advanced unique solutions for individual, patientcentric problems – and does so with compassion. “I love being a dentist! When patients give the staff or myself a hug, or tell us they are happy with their results, that is something to smile about.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SERENITY DENTAL, CALL 480.400.CARE OR 480.400.5000 OR VISIT WWW.SERENITY.CARE OR WWW.SERENITY.DENTAL.

A Phone Call Away

Sumer L. Daiza, MD, FACS, of Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale

AN AVERAGE DOCTOR won’t give patients a personal cell phone number as a means of direct communication; patient inquiries and concerns are likely to be addressed during a practice’s office hours. But, Dr. Sumer Daiza isn’t your average doctor – her hours are her patients’ hours. “Every patient gets my cell phone number. I want my patients to be comforted knowing that I am accessible to them any hour,” Dr. Daiza says. Not only does she bend the rulebook on traditional doctor/ patient communication, her practice also breaks the “factorylike” norm. “My practice, Plastic Surgery Center of Scottsdale, has a very concierge-meets-boutique style. The atmosphere is not only inviting, but it also allows me to be very hands on and give my patients all the attention they need.” And attention is what they get! From the consultation and preoperative visit to the recovery time, Dr. Daiza is present every step of the way before, during and after all her patients’ surgeries. “When patients put their complete trust in me to perform a life-changing procedure, it is my absolute responsibility and honor to give them 100 percent of what I have to offer.” Dr. Daiza completed her rigorous studies more than a decade ago and is the only double board certified female plastic surgeon in the Valley with cosmetic fellowship training. She offers Valley patients all of her expertise in cosmetic surgery of the breast, body and face. Body contouring is a true art form that Dr. Daiza has perfected. Her specialty lies in breast and body work – especially mommy makeovers – but she performs all aspects of cosmetic surgery, including skin lesion removal, scar revision and ear

lobe repair. She has also curated a craft in facial injectables like Botox, Dysport, Juvederm and Restylane. “I personally do all injectables myself in order to maintain the ever-present relationship with patients, as opposed to ancillary staff completing the task.” Dr. Daiza’s ultimate goal is to help Valley men and women experience an all-encompassing transformation that will impact their lives forever. It is more than just a physical transformation; it is an emotional and mental transformation as well. “What I do is very personal. Patients come to me to make changes that will forever transform their lives. We come to share a bond, and I treat that bond no differently than family.” Whether you have questions regarding body contouring or need a compassionate shoulder to lean on pre-procedure, Dr. Daiza is always just a phone call away. Five-star Dentistry

Rick Kariotoglou, DDS, of Dr. Rick Dentistry

THE DENTIST’S OFFICE is often regarded as, or compared to, many experiences but never to that of a luxurious, inviting spa. That is, until Dr. Rick Kariotoglou opened his new, stateof-the-art Scottsdale practice, which is changing how Valley residents feel about going to the dentist. Dr. Rick Dentistry stands apart from the typical dental office in more ways than one, from the striking design and decor, to the advanced technology installed throughout the office, to the patient-centered philosophy that drives the practice and every policy decision that is made. “My team and I strive to make every patient’s visit as exceptional as if he or she were going to any other five-star establishment,” Dr. Rick says. Dr. Rick, as he has come to be called over the years, says that what sets his approach apart from other healthcare providers is his unique philosophy that “it isn’t health care unless it is patient care.” As a result, his practices have come to be known as a place of integrity, trust and compassion. “Too often patients are treated as a dollar value or number, whether by their provider or insurance or both. However, insurance should not dictate patient care. True patient care is that which is in the best interest of the patient, and only of the patient,” Dr. Rick says. As patients enter Dr. Rick’s practice, they are greeted as if being welcomed into their family home. In addition to the team’s emphasis on easing patient concerns or simply dental anxiety, the practice also offers a host of amenities to make the patient experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible. “I have created an environment that is both warm and inviting so that my patients are as comfortable as they are confident that they are receiving the highest standard of care,” Dr. Rick says. “Everything about the practice is modeled after five-star service.” He goes on to say, “I love all aspects of my field, but I would have to say that cosmetics are at the top of my list after

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 66

patient care. It is the best feeling to see a patient smile larger than life after having been too embarrassed to do so in in the past. Their confidence and self-esteem are restored, and that is truly priceless.” Not only does Dr. Rick transform smiles, but he also performs procedures such as implants, root canals and oral surgery. He also treats sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) patients with Botox. After graduating from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry in 1999, Dr. Rick moved to New York to practice and advance his knowledge in cosmetic dentistry. He moved from the Big Apple, despite his love for the city, to be closer to his family. “My team, my patients and even the maintenance and delivery drivers feel as though they are family. After all, I’m Greek and family is everything in the our culture!” Dr. Rick would do anything for his family, which includes his patients. If that isn’t five-star service, what is? The True Power of Beauty

Andrew M. Wolin, MD, of Wolin Plastic Surgery Center

MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE that aesthetic plastic surgery is synonymous with vanity. Dr. Andrew Wolin would urge these individuals to consider that physicality creates empowerment. “Your entire interaction with the world revolves around a complex link between how you see yourself and how the world sees you,” he says. “You are most empowered when your inner thoughts and feelings are matched with your outer appearance … this empowerment is the true power of beauty.” Dr. Wolin originally studied to become a dentist at New York University College of Dentistry. After completing two years in dentistry, he decided to switch his medical studies. He transferred to State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He ultimately underwent nine years of training in internal medicine, general surgery, head and neck cancer surgery, plastic surgery and microvascular surgery. Dr. Wolin earned his double board certification in 1985. Since then, he has been helping people realize their highest potential by melding external appearances with their inner self-image. “When patients return with friends and family and tell them that their experience absolutely changed their lives, it is the most exhilarating and satisfying moment of my day,” Dr. Wolin says. Dr. Wolin’s unique approach to patient care is what keeps his patients returning with rave reviews. Rather than distributing a menu of procedures, Dr. Wolin creates customized plans per patient. After analyzing their concerns and making a diagnosis, he then creates a personal solution unique to every patient’s aesthetic concerns. Until three years ago, Wolin Plastic Surgery was nestled in the Old Town Scottsdale area until finding its new home in North Scottsdale. The new location includes a state-of-the-art surgical facility, which is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facility (AAAASF). Therefore, Dr. Wolin can satisfy his patients’ needs all under one roof.

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 67

Along with his practice, Dr. Wolin makes it a priority to travel to national American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) meetings as well as meet with leaders in the plastic surgery world. He often presents clinical research papers at international meetings, and teaches new ideas and techniques at the ASAPS’ annual meetings. His lifelong fascination with biology and fine arts enables Dr. Wolin to pursue his passion, where he gets to create biological art in a scientific setting. “My long romance with sculpting and drawing and it’s blending with the biological sciences puts me in a unique position,” he says. “It’s the artist as the surgeon who has the power to create true beauty.” True beauty is synonymous with empowerment, and Dr. Wolin makes it his mission to hold each and every patient’s hand along his or her self-empowering journey. What could be more beautiful than that? TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WOLIN PLASTIC SURGERY CENTER, CALL 480.945.8440 OR VISIT WWW.ANDREWWOLINMD.COM.

Babies in Bloom

Millie Behera, MD, FACOG, FRCSC, of Bloom Reproductive Institute

INFERTILITY IS A GROWING issue for many couples. However, this challenge stands no chance against Dr. Millie Behera, medical director and founder of Bloom Reproductive Institute. As a mother of four beautiful children herself, Dr. Behera understands the light a child brings to a couple’s life. Her ultimate goal is to give the gift of parenthood by helping families come to full bloom. The process begins with creating a relationship built upon trust. Through engaged listening and deep understanding, Dr. Behera fosters a bond that enables her patients to feel like members of the Bloom family. It is only after this foundation is set that a personalized treatment plan can undergo construction. “Our success rates are amongst the highest in the country, and the best chances of success are catered through each couple’s unique treatment plan,” she says. Her practice is the only clinic in Arizona that offers Eeva, an advanced state-of-the-art, time-lapse imaging technology that is both non-invasive and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The embryo-monitoring imaging algorithm provides more information to couples and their fertility team about the growth potential and pregnancy success prognosis of their embryos. Accompanying advanced technology is the harmonious marriage of compassion and expertise that Dr. Behera and her team exude. This is otherwise known as the 4 Es: Expertise, Experience, Ethics and Empathy. “At Bloom, we have compiled a team of experts in the field of fertility, each providing the latest and best therapies available to our patients,” she says. “Throughout the treatment process, our patients are met with our genuinely caring and highly-skilled

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 68

team who welcomes them as family.” Dr. Behera not only helps families come into full bloom, but she also helps vernal minds at Duke University and the University of Arizona College of Medicine blossom in knowledge about fertility and reproductive endocrinology. “My goal is to inspire more young doctors to choose a career in the great field of reproductive medicine, a career I have the privilege of doing every day.” Between her highly specialized clinical expertise and Bloom’s cutting-edge in vitro fertilization laboratory technologies, Dr. Behera offers Valley patients exceptional fertility care with promise that their family tree will surely grow. “Achieving success together with a patient’s healthy pregnancy and sharing the joy when we meet a couple’s beautiful baby is the most gratifying aspect of my work.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BLOOM REPRODUCTIVE INSTITUTE, CALL 480.434.6565 OR VISIT WWW.FERTILITYBLOOM.COM.

Humanitarian Heart Shepherd G. Pryor, MD, FACS, of Valley Facial Plastic Surgery

DR. SHEPHERD G. PRYOR’S medical studies have taken him all over the world. He has traveled extensively through the U.S. and has passport stamps from Asia to Europe to Rio de Janeiro. With a decade of education from prestigious universities and residencies from elite medical centers under his belt, Dr. Pryor brings his worldly expertise to the Valley. “There is no greater state to live than Arizona. I love the people and clientele in Scottsdale,” he says. “Plus, almost yearround sunshine cannot be beat!” Dr. Pryor began his career as a reconstructive facial plastic surgeon helping correct major facial defects. This naturally lead to a cosmetic fellowship where he honed in his skills and created an artistic practice based in Scottsdale. Valley Facial Plastic Surgery is where Dr. Pryor currently helps patients look and feel their absolute best – both inside and out. Patients visit Dr. Pryor for surgical procedures like rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty and minimally invasive face-lifting. The healing time for said surgeries can leave patient’s swollen and bruised for weeks. But courtesy of the latest and most advanced wound-healing techniques offered at his practice, Dr. Pryor ensures a recovery time much shorter than other surgeons. “Patients love the wound-healing techniques and options available on selective cases. It enables them to return to everyday life much quicker,” he says. His craftsmanlike touch not only works miracles on Valley patients, but it also outreaches to the greater Phoenix community, as well as communities overseas. Dr. Pryor devotes his time and energy freely on a case by case basis to help patients with facial deformities, facial paralysis and also victims of domestic violence who have limited access to clinical care and coverage. Rather than conceal himself behind a marble-floored office or be placed upon a pedestal, this doctor makes himself readily

available to the many faces of mankind. “I have not secluded myself from the world of health insurance,” he says. “I help everyone.” His humanitarian actions speak louder than words, but Dr. Pryor’s words also speak volumes of his kind heart. Patients who visit him will always receive genuine dialogue. “I give no double talk. I am very conservative as I’m always providing realistic expectations and natural results for my patients,” he explains. There is no achievable “Dr. Pryor look” after visiting this worldly doc. Rather, he embraces and enhances the already unique features of each unique individual he treats. The masterpiece starts with his patients, and ends with the overwhelming gratitude he receives. “The smiles and hugs are what matter the most. Sophisticated Surgeon Semone Rochlin, D.O., of Semone Rochlin

WHOEVER SAID MEDICAL scrubs can’t be stylish and sophisticated hasn’t met Dr. Semone Rochlin. Dr. Rochlin is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in both Scottsdale and Gilbert. She has an artistic eye and creativity that has allowed her to accomplish a level of success and recognition in the medical field as being one of the only female surgeons in the Valley. “Although awareness that women are successfully participating in surgery is instrumental, there are emotional barriers, including both subtle and overt misogyny and a sense that we don’t belong unless we are as ‘hardcore’ as the men,” she says. What is more hardcore than eliminating double-standards in the surgical room and maintaining a modest persona in the process? “Being one of the girls myself, I understand the desire to turn back the hands of time to maintain a more youthful appearance. In fact, I do injections to keep myself looking refreshed and rejuvenated,” she says. “I never forget to check my ego at the door, however.” Dr. Rochlin is naturally able to understand the needs and concerns of her female patients on a deeper level, but she also expresses the same care for her male patient base. “Ultimately, no one likes to age. I feel very privileged to be able to make both men and women feel good about themselves and there is nothing better than that!” Dr. Rochlin offers patients services including breast augmentation, tummy tucks, liposuction, mommy makeovers, blephaplasty and PRP hair restoration. She also offers a game changer in skin rejuvenation: J-Plasma, an advanced energy device that enables a high-level of precision, virtually eliminating wrinkles on ones face. Any form of surgery may cause concerns, but Dr. Rochlin has created an atmosphere of privacy, safety and comfort. Her

team of amazing women, who have many years of experience in the industry, greet every patient with warmth and compassion as they walk through the practice’s doors. Patients will even be greeted by Lola, the office’s emotional support dog and one of Dr. Rochlin’s furry children. “My Puli, Lola, quickly became part of the staff when she first came to the office as a puppy. I have many patients request her to accompany them as an emotional support dog when they come for their appointments.” For 10 years, Dr. Rochlin has been a board-certified surgeon and has made a name for herself in what is still a predominately male-driven field. Her unwavering commitment to excellence in the medical industry has earned her a coveted fellowship through the American Academy of Osteopathic Surgery – an honor that only the most hardcore surgeons receive. Progressive Provider

Ray Rhodes, MD, bio-identical hormone replacement specialist of SottoPelle®

AFTER 25 YEARS in the medical world, Dr. Ray Rhodes decided it was time to hang up his medical coat and embrace retirement. Retirement, though, was fleeting as he unexpectedly stumbled onto a second career. Dr. Rhodes reached for his white coat – this time wearing it as a certified specialist in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at SottoPelle®. SottoPelle® Therapy is a highly effective form of hormone replacement that prescribes biologically identical hormones through the body’s bloodstream using a pellet delivery system. These pellets actually mimic the body’s physiological needs, which is as natural as you can get in medical treatments. This treatment was developed and refined by the late Dr. Gino Tutera, a dear friend of Dr. Rhodes and the individual responsible for his switch in medical specialties. Dr. Rhodes was first a patient of Dr. Tutera’s before he became a provider at the SottoPelle® offices in the Phoenix area. He has been a provider in the Valley for seven years now. “I was so fascinated by my results and the physiology of the hormones that I dove right in and started working with Dr. Tutera, the guru behind it all,” he says. “I saw this as an opportunity for a different medical experience and to help people better enjoy their lives.” Dr. Rhodes can speak first-handedly about BHRT having experienced it himself. “After getting the bio-identical testosterone replacement I had much more ambition, energy and mental clarity,” he says. His own patient experience differentiates himself from other providers. Dr. Rhodes offers patients sincere feedback and assures them that if BHRT worked for him, it will and does work for anybody.

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 71

“Bio-identical hormone therapy is positively life-changing, relationship-saving and, in some cases, life-saving. The key word is bio-identical,” he explains. And the proof is in the pudding. Patients of Dr. Rhodes speak volumes about how wonderful and rejuvenated they feel after receiving a type of therapy that is consistent with science and physiology. “There is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing the faces of my patients light up with joy and enthusiasm over how good they feel and how drastic their lives have changed for the better from this unique treatment.” SottoPelle® Therapy so profoundly changed the quality of life for Dr. Rhodes that he left retirement behind in order to provide patients with the same life-changing promise. And as a man of integrity, Dr. Rhodes doesn’t break his patient promises. TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SOTTOPELLE®, CALL 480.874.1515 OR VISIT WWW.SOTTOPELLETHERAPY.COM.

A Focus on Natural Wellness

Jill Cole, ND, of Cole Optimal Health Solutions TAKE CARE OF your body; it’s your most important place of residency. Cole Optimal Health Solutions (COHS) runs on this belief, and is the first facility of its kind to open in the area. Dr. Jill Cole’s practice proactively helps create optimized living and lifestyle with quality clinical care, education and compassion, with a solid foundation of understanding how people can get healthy and stay healthy, long-term. Dr. Cole addresses the true underlying cause of chronic diseases rather than removing or masking a patient’s symptoms like modern medicine does. She states there is a time and place for medications, however, this reactive approach (“sick care”) is a false security that slowly destroys quality of life, including finances. “We empower patients to get healthy and enjoy life to the very fullest,” Dr. Cole says. And, in fact, conventional doctors and surgeons even visit Dr. Cole because they trust her judgment and clinical care. COHS’s unique and comprehensive clinical approach to wellness centers on individualized care, while Dr. Cole and her team provide patients with resources, support and tools they need to succeed. Patients commonly seek out Dr. Cole’s help for concerns about belly fat, weight gain, stress, fatigue, diabetes, thyroid conditions, cardiovascular disease, hormone imbalances, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, wanting to get off medication, and more. Ultimately, her patients come with a strong desire to get truly healthy. After earning her undergraduate degree at Worcester State University in Massachusetts, Dr. Cole found naturopathic medicine while applying to serve in the Peace Corps. It was then that her calling became instantly clear. She decided to attend naturopathic medical school in order to help people regain control of their lives. “This is not a profession for me,” she says. “It is who I am.” Her enthusiasm for life and the compassion she carries for others has always been at the very center of Dr. Cole’s personality. Her lifelong passion for wellness led her to be heavily involved in fitness,

personal training and nutrition in college. Today, she has harnessed all of her experience, energy and passion into her practice. “There is so much information out there, and people are looking for answers. We have education, materials, classes, resources and hands-on demonstrations on various health subjects, along with taking step-by-step action. This is why our patients do so well,” she says. “In every customized plan, though, general good practices prevail.” Patients not only visit Dr. Cole to reclaim a healthier body, but also a healthier mind, spirit and emotional state. “I listen with deep care and without judgment as a patient’s walls of vulnerability come tumbling down. They know they are supported and they know they are safe at COHS,” she explains. “My goal is not for people to still need me a year from now. The goal is for people to walk away healthier, happier, more aware, confident and educated.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COLE OPTIMAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS AND ATTEND A FREE UPCOMING EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR, CALL 480.418.COLE (2653) OR VISIT WWW.COLEOHS.COM.

A True Silhouette

Jeffery Ptak, MD, FACS, of Silhouette Surgical Spa

WOULDN’T IT BE exceptional if your external appearance matched your inward, youthful spirit? Dr. Jeffery Ptak of Silhouette Surgical Spa does more than enhance one’s appearance; he reveals the ageless beauty that dwells within each of his patients, giving them their true silhouette back. Dr. Ptak is a leading Scottsdale plastic and reconstructive surgeon with 29 years of experience. In nearly three decades, he has improved the quality of people’s lives by rebuilding injured or deformed areas of their bodies and faces. “The ability to repair a congenital deformity with almost instant renewal of the patient’s self-image is very gratifying,” Dr. Ptak says. As a native Phoenician, it was only fitting that Dr. Ptak open his practice in Arizona. Silhouette Surgical Spa offers patients medical innovation – a surgery center and inclusive medical spa all in one facility. In the era of regenerative medicine, Dr. Ptak applies the tools of reconstructive experience, technology and science to restore one’s appearance. The list of services he offers is extensive, from facial rejuvenation like facelifts, rhinoplasty, and laser resurfacing to breast and body sculpting procedures. What’s more endless is the restored confidence of his patients. His patients’ exceeded expectations keep them returning to Dr. Ptak, and their recommendations reach every family member. “I have operated on three generations of the same family,” he says. “It is the confidence that my lifelong patients have shown in me that is most humbling and energizes me to continue to achieve my highest level of performance in my craft for my patients.” Central to his practice philosophy is encouraging patients to maintain a commitment to a youthful, healthy and, above all, natural appearance. Rather than diving into plastic surgery and receiving a one-shot makeover, which is neither safe nor necessary, Dr. Ptak suggests that his patients take baby steps into plastic surgery.

SS_58_73DocsofDesert_Sept16.indd 73

“Investing in your outward appearance a little at a time has been clearly shown to psychologically improve one’s body image, self-image and, ultimately, self-esteem,” Dr. Ptak explains. While navigating patients through informed decisionmaking about plastic surgery, Dr. Ptak also spends a substantial amount of time focusing on each patient’s inner spirit. “I truly enjoy learning every patient’s story and getting to understand the motivation behind their desire for improving themselves,” Dr. Ptak says. It is this doctor-patient relationship that often fades from American medicine, yet Dr. Ptak doesn’t let it disappear at his office. He determines the very best approach for each patient so that he can apply his full range of experience to achieve the desired goals. As for Dr. Ptak’s goals? His priority is to help increase his patients’ self-esteem so that their internal sense of self is visible to the rest of the world. The five aluminum horses of Scottsdale Public Art’s Water Mark installation are more than a captivating sight. Standing at 14 feet high, they are both works of art and works with purpose. At the helm of Indian Bend Wash and Scottsdale’s flood-control greenbelt, each equine gargoyle keeps watch over the basin, and during dramatic flash flooding, water pours from the horses’ mouths. The structures, designed by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan, recall the historic McCormick Arabian Ranch that was once adjacent to the site. Photo taken Aug. 7 at 3:16 p.m. SEPTEMBER 2016 |

Mixology Mondays

Put some fun into the start of your week with Mixology Mondays at La Bocca Urban Kitchen + Wine Bar, a weekly interactive taste event led by La Bocca and USBG bartender Tony Pharis. During each event, Pharis will demonstrate the versatility of one spirit by crafting three distinct cocktails for guests to sample, educating them on the history and evolution of each spirit along the way. Each seminar, which also includes complimentary housemade bruschetta to accompany the tastings, is $15 per person. September’s featured spirits include rum (Sept. 5), tequila (Sept. 12), scotch (Sept. 19) and apéritifs (Sept. 26). For those who can’t make the tasting events but want a “spirited” cure to the Mondays, La Bocca will also offer $2 off any crafted cocktail on the menu from open to close every Monday and half off select bottles of red and white wine. Reservations are recommended. www.laboccapizzeria.com.

ooks & Chords, now in its 10th year, has grown into one of Scottsdale’s premier fall tasting events. The night of culinary creations from the Valley’s top chefs, which raises funds for the Arizona chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, is unique in that it is hosted in neither a resort ballroom nor a restaurant, but instead in the expansive reception area of the Mayo Clinic. The location allows for something special – face-time with the busy doctors and specialists who are working on the forefront of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research right in our backyard. “Along with the food and fun, we invite MS researchers to join us to give a speech on the most cutting-edge new treatment options, tests and medicines to

Loco Patron – Old Town Scottsdale Not only is Loco Patron one of the best places to watch a game, it is one of the best places to watch the people watching the game! As multi-year winners of AZ Central’s “Hottest Wait Staff” and “Best Bar Patio,” Loco Patron boasts 22 massive TVs and always turns the sound on for the big games of the day. In addition, the cantina feel of the restaurant all but beseeches you to order one of their specialty margaritas, available in mango, Chambord, strawberry, cactus pear, peach, wild berry and pomegranate, and often on special during the games.

Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers – North Scottsdale and Old Town locations Cold Beers wants to be more than a fan favorite for watching games – it wants your entire fantasy football team to come on over. Case in point: Each of its Valley locations offers a $20 gift card to any fantasy team commissioner and $10 for each member of his/her draft party. Also acutely aware that more women than ever are watching football, they offer $1 refills on their famous mimosas until 3 p.m. and $5 Fireball shots, both Sunday Funday female favorites.

Carlos O’Briens Mexican Restaurant – North Scottsdale Since moving from their long-time location on Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright to their new home on the 101 and Mayo Boulevard last year, Carlos O’Brien’s has earned a reputation as a go-to haunt for football every Sunday. So much so, in fact, that the family-owned restaurant, which boasts a bar five times the size it was at the prior location, invested heavily in flat-screen TVs and a new sound system. During games, guests can expect revolving specials, but can always count on a bucket of domestic beers for $12 and import beer buckets for $16 as well as margaritas and sangria starting at just $5. Majerle’s Sports Grill – Desert Ridge and Old Town locations Dan Majerle might be a local basketball icon, but his Majerle’s Sports Grills have been among the best places to go to watch a football game for years. With wall-to-wall TVs, it is nearly impossible to miss a minute of action on any given Sunday. Each of the local venues will also offer game-day deals, including $3 domestic drafts, $ Fireball shots and $5 Bloody Marys. Bottled Blonde Pizzeria and Beer Garden – Old Town Scottsdale Bottled Blonde is one of the places to be on game day. Located in the heart of Old Town, the bar-restaurant offers wood-fired pizzas (and pizza fries!) among a modern Italian menu to hungry sports fans in a relaxed, open-air space reminiscent of a German bier garden. With a spacious 9,000 square feet and 22 different craft beers, Bottled Blonde is a must for a pie, a pint and some football. Bonus: They serve brunch, too, perfect for those Sunday morning football games.

SERENE SCENES

Cyndy Carstens captures the beauty of nature in her paintings BY NICOLE ROYSE

P

ainter Cyndy Carstens uses vibrant colors and intriguing compositions to lend a fresh perspective to landscapes and skies, including those of the Southwest. Whether it’s a fiery sky or a striking panorama of the Southwest, she aims to “construct visual realities and bring to the forefront an awareness of our endangered humanity and the vulnerabilities of our environment.” Her paintings evoke a sense of light and serenity while exploring space and time. Moreover, they offer insight into the sublime nature existing beyond the city, yet Carstens’ use of color is more subjective and expressive of the artist’s relationship with nature. Carstens works in a variety of mediums, including oil, graphite, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. Geometric shapes are prominent throughout her artwork, resulting in a fascinating composition. “The geometric shapes represent the parts in our memories and experiences which contribute to our individual

personalities,” Carstens says. “My paintings focus on and reflect the portrayal of awareness in wide expanses of the sky and the details of nature.” Her work is influenced by the Hudson River School and 20th-century Southwest artists, while she examines the beauty and nature’s power to capture a fleeting moment and magnify that moment’s emotional impact. Utilizing a wide spectrum of colors blending realism and abstraction, Carstens works are meditative masterpieces. Through her paintings, Carstens invites the viewer to explore nature while

reflecting on our transient existence and place within the larger scope of the earth, the universe and beyond. This is evident throughout her work, and recently she debuted a breathtaking, eight-panel painting titled Color of Light, which depicts an abstracted, expansive skyline. Carstens’ work has been featured in many publications and has been recognized with numerous awards. Her paintings can be found in private collections across America, Canada, Europe and Australia, and she has exhibited her artwork extensively throughout the country. In addition to creating and selling artwork – a portion of which she donates to support local charities – she also exhibits other local artists throughout the year within her intimate gallery, Carstens Fine Art Studio & Gallery, located in the Scottsdale Art District. The gallery and studio are open daily, and the exhibition may be viewed during business hours. For more information about Carstens visit www.cyndycarstens.com.

Under Schwartz’s direction, Snooze dishes up creative and eclectic twists on American morning time classics, from a breakfast pot pie and pineapple upsidedown pancakes to quinoa porridge and chilaquiles Benedict. HOW DID YOU GET INTO COOKING? Quite literally, I got into cooking in my swim trunks. I used to sneak into a local country club’s pool to swim growing up. During a particularly great day of “breaking and entering,” I heard that the club chef was short a dishwasher. I walked over – soaking wet and in my suit – and volunteered to help out. Washing those dishes led me to a job food prepping at the club, which led to making pizzas and eventually to working the line. Thankfully, I eventually got a uniform. It would have been cold in those swim trunks in the winter. WHY BREAKFAST? Because it’s the most important meal of the day, of course! Actually, I moved over to Snooze and into the breakfast world by design. Not only does it give me a chance to play around with ingredients I might not get to use during dinner service, but it gives me more time for my real job – being a dad.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

HOW DOES SNOOZE FIND WAYS TO CONTINUOUSLY INNOVATE NEW MENU CONCEPTS? Teamwork! We change our menu four times a year, in line with the seasons. To make it happen, I get together with my fellow Snooze chefs across Arizona, Colorado, California and Texas every couple of months, and we laugh, cook, eat and drink until magic happens.

In the kitchen with Jon “Schwartzn’egger” Schwartz, head chef at Snooze in Kierland Commons

WHAT ONE INGREDIENT DO YOU ESPECIALLY LOVE TO USE? I love working with cinnamon. While there is a distinct “winter” flavor to it, cinnamon is unbelievably versatile in both sweet and savory dishes. It’s also the perfect ingredient to layer flavors, like our cinnamon butter. Try it on one of our Sinful Pancakes, a buttermilk pancake with white chocolate chips, salty bacon and candied pecans. It will change your life.

EVERYONE KNOWS BREAKFAST IS BETTER WITH A BEVERAGE. WHAT’S YOUR POISON? I am a Blood Mary guy, especially this time of year when we are able to bring in freshpicked, vine-ripened tomatoes. My current favorite is our Gazpacho Blood Mary, which combines refreshing cucumbers and tomatoes with pepper, garlic-infused Mell Vodka and our house mix. Snooze,15054 N. SPIRIT OF SUMMER

Mastro’s mixologists are muddling something special BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

ummer isn’t over just yet – at least not at Mastro’s Steakhouse, Mastro’s City Hall and Mastro’s Ocean Club. Each of Mastro’s local restaurants will offer their new summer cocktail menu items into the fall and beyond, including The Spirit of Summer ($18). “It all starts with the gin,” says Robbi Jo Oliver, director of wine and spirits for Mastro’s Steakhouse. “We use a brand called Botanist, by design. Gins can often be heavy, which turns most people off to using them in light, summer cocktails.” While most gins taste like juniper, more than 22 botanicals including juniper, lemon balm and several flower varietals – each of which are handpicked by the botanist team – are used to develop this gin, resulting in lighter flavor notes. In addition to the gin, the muddled raspberries and hint of simple syrup in the cocktail are also by design. “Whenever we create a new cocktail, we ask our bartenders nationwide about trends in their markets,” says Oliver, noting that over the past year, raspberries have spiked in popularity. Oliver then uses rosemary needles and freshly squeezed lemon. All of the elements are shaken with ice and poured into a tall, chilled Pilsner glass over ice. The cocktail is topped off with club soda and garnished with a small sprig of rosemary and fresh raspberries. “The taste is perfectly balanced and really refreshing with just a hint of sweetness,” Oliver says. “The combination of the herbs and botanicals remind me of a cocktail one would get in a spa.” Find any of Mastro’s Restaurants at www.mastrosrestaurants.com.

It may not feel like summer is over just yet, but wardrobe-wise it’s perfectly acceptable to transition into colors that connote autumn – warm taupe, deep brown, soft ivory and gilded gold. Taking inspiration from centuries-old African jewelry, these neutral tones are intermixed in Ashley Pittman’s “Kubwa” Multi-Strand Necklace, making for an effortless accessory. Handcrafted in Kenya, this bold statement piece is comprised of materials indigenous to East Africa, such as bronze, semiprecious gemstones and repurposed horn. here’s an old saying that when you’re the last one to arrive at the party, you better be wearing the prettiest dress. As one of the last automakers without an SUV in its lineup, Jaguar called on design director Ian Callum to deliver on this task. And so, the legendary British marque adds the all-new F-PACE to its portfolio. Visually inspired by the F-TYPE sports car, the F-PACE features Jaguar’s current design language including the signature “J” blade headlamps found on the 2017 XE and XF sedans. Even the huge grille and lower air intakes are carryovers from Jaguar’s performance sedans. F-PACE borrows the minimalistic taillights from the original E-TYPE Jaguar sports cars.

From the bulging hood and clean side profile to the strong rear shoulders, the overall look recalls the strength, purity and agile stance of a feline, ready to pounce. Consistent with its sedan siblings, the interior is a near-perfect blend of sportiness and refined elegance with generous seating for five. The new InControl Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch touch-screen and Meridian sound system is standard; the Pro version, with a huge 10.2-inch screen, is optional. A unique innovation for runners and those with an active lifestyle is Activity Key, a waterproof wristband that allows you to leave the bulkier key fob in the vehicle and lock and unlock your car with just the wristband. F-PACE is available with a choice of three engine options, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel with 180 horsepower starting at $40,990, followed by a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 in either 340 or 380 horsepower forms, from $42,390 and $56,700 respectively. The turbodiesel and 340-horsepower, V-6 versions come in Pure, Prestige, Portfolio or R-Sport trim levels. There are also S and First Edition models; the latter is limited stock. I drove both gas-engine models, and it really took back-to-back driving to discern any difference in power. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard on all models. The F-PACE S gets adaptive dynamics, which adjust the damping based on body and wheel movement for a smoother and more agile ride. Overall, the range of models, trim levels and options are vast and allow you to custom-build the F-PACE how you like it, but the price climbs easily with added options. Jaguar’s new SUV is easily more sports sedan-like than any rivals in its segment, and is an excellent choice for those seeking a true sports utility vehicle. Just over a twohour flight from Phoenix, what was once a small town has evolved into a modern, world-class beach destination with restaurants, shops, art galleries and entertainment. Even so, Puerto Vallarta remains true to its roots, as evidenced by its Old Mexico charm, cobblestone streets and fiestas. Beyond exploring the welcoming city, you can just as easily spend your days soaking up three of the area’s best resorts. Although Casa Velas is not along the oceanfront, the hotel has a private Beach Club a few miles away where you can eat and take a dip in the pool or sea. Back on property, there’s another pool, flanked by palm trees and a swim-up bar, as well as koi fish ponds and meandering bright blue peacocks that call the hotel’s lush grounds home.

Presidential Suite, Velas Vallarta

SPLURGE: With four bedrooms, the Presidential Suite is the largest and most luxurious experience at Casa Velas. Every bedroom has views of the golf course and the hotel pool, and the suite itself has its own private terrace with an oversized plunge pool. The Presidential Suite includes a full bar in the living area and your own butler and bartender, plus each guest receives a spa experience and a complimentary round of golf.

studios to more spacious three-bedroom suites and luxury suites, all of which have kitchenettes or kitchens, making this a welcome retreat for families and groups. No matter which you choose, you’ll feel you’ve stepped into your own private Vallarta villa, with Mexican-inspired decor, ethnic fabrics and earthy hues, all overlooking the water of Banderas Bay. There’s no shortage of entertainment (or food) at Velas Vallarta, with nightly themed dinners at the resort’s more upscale Andrea Restaurant and festivities in the hotel’s lobby, such as margarita- and martini-tasting nights, fiestas and live music. During the day, take part in yoga on the jetty, watersports like kayaking and windsurfing, or a seaside massage while the kids hang out at the recently renovated Kids’ Club. And, of course, guests are equally encouraged to spend their days lounging by one of the three pools and floating the lazy river that snakes through the beautifully curated gardens.

Velas Vallarta

The largest and most lavish Velas property in the area is Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. Located 15 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta along the Banderas Bay, the resort is a recipient of the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award and U.S. News & World Report named it the No. 1 Hotel in Puerto Vallarta. Upon arrival, you’re immediately welcomed by grandeur; the resort’s entrance towers above you and outdoor elements are seamlessly blended into the design, with lush plants and ponds dotting the interior landscape. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit has 267 suites ranging from wellness suites with health-minded amenities to luxurious spa suites. Teak furnishings imported from Bali, soft neutral tones and tropical colors adorn the spaces, but most breathtaking are the suites’ ocean views. Particularly of note are the resort’s five-star gourmet dining options, the 16,500-square-foot spa, and its plethora of activities for kids, including a kids’ spa and the recently renovated Teens’ Club, which is so cool, you may find yourself wanting to hang out there! The extensive game room has entertainment like X-Box Kinect, air hockey and a karaoke set with a dance floor.

SPLURGE: The resort’s Presidential Suite is a no-brainer for those who desire the ultimate in splendor. The suite accompanies up to eight people among its four bedrooms, making it the most spacious offering at Velas Vallarta. Situated on the eighth floor of the resort directly above the brilliant blue water, you’ll feel like you’re in your own private retreat. And that you are – the terrace has its own pool and lounge space with a dining area outside for dinners under the stars.

CASA VELAS: A Romantic Escape Tucked away on the Marina Vallarta Golf Course is a private oasis with a captivatingly romantic feel. The AAA Four Diamond Casa Velas offers a quiet retreat with an adults-only experience. Upon arriving, you’re first welcomed by lush gardens, followed by regal architecture that’s reminiscent of a Spanish hacienda. Listed eighth among the 15 best hotels in Mexico by Condé Nast Traveler, Casa Velas has an intimate and exclusive feel, thanks to its boutique size of just 80 suites. Last year, 38 of the suites underwent a million-dollar renovation as part of the hotel’s 10th anniversary. GO GOLD WITH PHOENIX CHILDREN’S THIS SEPTEMBER Why Go Gold? · A child is diagnosed every 3½ minutes with cancer. More than 300 will learn they have the disease this year at Phoenix Children’s alone. · Childhood cancer research funding accounts for less than 4% of all cancer research funding allotted by the federal government. · One out of every five children with cancer will not survive. Survival rates increase with participation in clinical trials. Phoenix Children’s is the only pediatric cancer treatment center in Arizona offering Phase 1 clinical trials. · The Chan Soon-Shiong Children’s Precision Medicine Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital serves as the epicenter of the nation’s largest childhood cancer initiative – the Pediatric Cancer MoonShot Consortium.

The newly opened Sel is already among the most buzzed about eateries in Scottsdale. Chef Branden Levine – of Café Monarch fame – has a clear focus: To provide a contemporary, yet eclectic, dining experience in the heart of the Scottsdale Art District. Available on both Sel’s $70 prix fixe, four-course menu and a la carte for $40 is Levine’s Seared Maple Leaf Farm Duck Breast. Perfectly seared with wonderfully crisp skin, the meat is paired with golden peaches that have been compressed with local mesquite honey and lemon juice, as well as white wine-braised fennel, nutty black quinoa and fire-roasted baba ghanoush. It’s finished with a pinot noir-duck stock reduction. The result is earthy, rich and firing on all flavor cylinders. 7044 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.949.6296; www.selrestaurant.com.

RISE AND DINE

Celebrate National Breakfast Month with these morning time menus BY TARYN JEFFERIES

Y

ou’ve likely heard, and perhaps for a time, paid attention to the belief that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. With busy lives and a bounty of convenience foods at the ready, some of us have lost sight of this adage. Yet, since September is devoted to breakfast, this is the ideal time to get reacquainted. While breakfast at home or on the go may be a monotonous cycle of cereal, scrambled eggs or toast, these six breakfast spots are churning out creative dishes that will make breaking the fast far more exciting and enjoyable. Get ready to dig in!

Egg N’ Joe

Alma wxsw Cuisine 8989 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.621.5254 www.almascottsdale.com Alma wxsw Cuisine is the newest neighborhood addition on this list and has already garnered a reputation for its unique array of Western-, Southwestern- and Mexican-inspired dishes. The decor embraces this theme with animal hide-adorned booths, dark wood accents and animal skulls throughout the dining room. We love how their breakfast entree items are split into The West and The Southwest, helping to guide you to the best choice for your tastes. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

food files The Overworked Cowboy is a fun (and spicy) take on chicken fried steak. In addition to a savory and peppery pork sausage gravy, you’ll get a slathering of green pork chili atop your crispy steak. The slight heat of the gravy melds with the balmy, pungent heat of the green chiles making for an eye-opening experience. In the mood for pancakes? You have some unique choices: lemon ricotta, apples and cinnamon, granola raspberry, bacon and blueberries, pumpkin and cajeta or a combination of any two.

exemplary service and extremely reasonable prices for the quality of food you receive. The space itself is charming and colorful, and the staff and owners, who are frequently on hand, are courteous and accommodating. You’ll find all manner of daybreak delights like light, flaky and buttery croissants; an assortment of hearty omelets; and delectable breakfast sandwiches. But what about the crepes? This creperie has a menagerie of sweet and savory options all tucked within their organic buckwheat flour crepes. On the savory side, the Forestiere crepe has a consolidation of ham, melted Swiss, mushrooms and bechamel. The lusciousness of the bechamel and the woodsy flavor of the mushrooms marry perfectly with the saltiness of the ham and cheese. On the sweetly sinful side, the Damnation 2 is an indulgent merger of toothsome chestnut cream and melted dark chocolate. No matter your choice, you’ll be saying ooh la la in no time!

Arcadia Farms Cafe 7014 E. 1st Ave., Scottsdale 480.941.5665 www.arcadiafarmscafe.com For more than 25 years, Arcadia Farms Cafe has been bringing neighbors together over specialty pastries, signature omelets and Arcadia blend coffees. The cafe’s vibe is that of a refurbished farmhouse; the interior is warm, cozy and familiar. In the cooler months, their patio is vibrant and abuzz with diners enjoying a leisurely morning over breakfast. If you’re short on time they still have you covered. Their pastries are foolproof for an early daylight jolt and easily accessible with a line that moves pretty quickly. They also have a marketplace in which you can pick up some sustenance to go. If you’re able to linger a little longer, grab a table and settle into their crepes croque-monsieur. The obvious twist here is the use of crepes, which hold up surprisingly well given the abundance of ham and cheese, and the creamy bechamel will have you wanting to lick your plate clean.

Egg N’ Joe 23271 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.265.9968 www.eggnjoe.com Egg N’ Joe is part of the Elmer’s Restaurants, and those familiar with Elmer’s know that their restaurants serve up great food and excellent service. It has long been rumored that some of the dining groups’ recipes are locked up in a vault, and with good reason. The food here is familiar enough, but you also sense that there is something a little extra that you can’t quite place. The brightly colored dining room evokes a fun, easygoing vibe and provides an excellent backdrop for a great start to your day. There is a healthy mix of old-fashioned and modern items on the menu. Not to be missed are the famous German pancakes. Dwarfing your plate, the pancake is huge and arrives light and airy, almost like a crepe. They traditionally come with lemon wedges, whipped butter and a dusting of powdered sugar, but you can add an array of fruit toppings, such as triple-berry, strawberry, maple-caramel apple or lingonberry butter.

Benedict’s 5555 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale 602.992.3337 www.benedictscaterers.com Even though Benedict’s is only open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday, this is a spot worth anticipating all week long. The charming cafe’s simplistic interior allows for the focus to spotlight the food – and it’s pretty impressive. Obviously, with a name like Benedict’s you would expect them to have an array of options when it comes to the classic breakfast offering, and you will not be disappointed. There are five different Benedicts varying from the traditional to some options with a little more flair. The Arizona comes with a base of a corn biscuit, spicy chorizo, poached eggs and an avocado tomatillo sauce that packs another punch of heat to the dish. Feeling like starting the day with something lavish? The bread pudding waffle is an intoxicating sequence of caramel and vanilla custard-soaked bread that is griddled until golden and crispy. The aroma alone will let your stomach know you’re in for an indulgent treat.

The Hash Kitchen 8777 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.947.3214 www.thehashkitchen.com Chef Joey Maggiore knows a thing or two about creating a venue and menu that locals crave. He’s been a part of seven successful restaurants in Arizona and California, with no plans to slow down. He and his wife have created an eclectic and vibrant eatery, sought out by locals and visitors alike. The popularity of this spot means that you might have to wait a bit to be seated, but you’ll quickly forget all about that once you embark on the DIY Bloody Mary bar. Food-wise, you can’t go wrong with any one of their six different hash combinations. The herb fried chicken variety comes with crispy leeks and a maple reduction that’s finger lickin’ good. For those with a sweet tooth, try an order of coconut- and almond-encrusted French toast with caramelized bananas and hot maple reduction.

YDJ, the top-selling denim brand in department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Dillard’s and Bloomingdale’s, has opened one of its first stand-alone retail locations – in Scottsdale! “Founded in 2003 in Los Angeles, NYDJ is designed by women, for women, and the brand is renowned for pioneering the slimming denim category,” says CEO and president Lisa Collier, who joined the brand earlier this summer and brings experience from Global Dockers and Tarrant Apparel Group. “Every pair of NYDJ jeans and pants features exclusive Lift Tuck® Technology that slims in the front and lifts in the back, contouring your curves for a perfect flattering fit,” Collier says. “The technology works so well that you look, feel and buy one size smaller.” Located in a 2,200-square-foot space in the heart of Scottsdale Fashion Square, NYDJ offers the brand’s full collection

of denim (starting at $110) as well as blouses, tops, dresses, casual wear and much more. With more than 65 sizes across women’s, petite, plus and a newly launched maternity collection, there’s a pair to fit and flatter every woman. In addition to NYDJ styles, the store carries a selection of luxurious basic T-shirts from Road22, an organization that employs formerly incarcerated women and gives them a fresh start. Residential in feel, the store was designed in partnership with NYC-based firm Kramer Design Group and utilizes a sophisticated and soothing neutral color palette with lavender and gray accents. The fitting rooms are feminine, plush and spacious with a boudoir-meets-living room aesthetic and offer a comfortable environment for women to experience the brand. “We are very excited about the opportunity to interact more closely with our consumer as we open our first NYDJ

No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
