"Who Did Your Hair?" Scottsdale’s Hair Color Guru, Rod Gentry, is the go-to expert for coloring your tresses

Hair color is tricky. Ensuring the perfect shade, finishing the process with hair that is still healthy, creating the perfect look—there are not many who can do it all or who are known as the go-to expert in color. But now Scottsdale has a color guru. Rod Gentry, one of the industry’s color experts, has relocated from Chicago— where he spent 24 years working in the field—to Scottsdale.

HIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK THEY WANT; AND THAT THE COLOR WILL BE PERFECT, EVERY TIME. His clients know four main things about Rod: They’ll receive undivided, personalized attention at their appointment (no double booking!); he’ll use only the top and best products to ensure their hair stays healthy; his wealth of knowledge and expertise will allow them to achieve the look they want; and that the color will be perfect, every time. Rod approaches hair color differently than others, first working with a client to determine the look they want, and then taking into account the client’s complexion and lifestyle to make sure that the end result will be something that is both flattering and workable. One of his main focuses is always on the health of the hair, and so he uses only high-end, enzyme-based

developers (rather than peroxide-based ones) so that hair is left in a better condition, and extremely shiny. He also always finishes a color process with a conditioning treatment as part of the color service. “You can have long hair and great color, but if it’s damaged, it won’t look as good,” he explains. He relentlessly pursues education to stay at the top of his field, traveling worldwide to learn about the newest innovative techniques, products and knowledge, training in such places as London and New York. “I really think that education is the key to success,” he explains. Rod’s services include single process color, highlights, color gloss, color paneling, ombre, extended conditioning, color correction, color removal and more, as well as cuttingedge haircuts. “I guarantee my work. Period,” he says.

Hair color specialist Rodney Gentry is located in a private studio at Sachi Studios, 10201 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 10, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. For an appointment, please call 480.639.2000, or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

Contents The arrival of fall in Scottsdale evokes excitement, from seasonal events to cooler temps to culinary happenings. The change in a season also signifies a new beginning and, speaking of which, you likely notice there’s a new photo to the left. You may recognize my face from our sister publications, Scottsdale Health and Uptown magazines, where, until now, I served as the editor-in-chief. I’d like to introduce myself as the new editor-in-chief of So Scottsdale! magazine and I’m so excited to take on this new role. I’ve lived in Scottsdale for the last 17 years, and have spent that time exploring all that Scottsdale has to offer. To some degree, we sort of grew up together. From my teen to adult years, I watched my city grow into the dynamic mecca for dining and entertainment that it is today, now drawing visitors from all over the world. I consider myself lucky to be a resident here and I’m honored to be part of the So Scottsdale! family, which has truly become a fixture in the community. Now, let’s get to the good stuff. James Jones (page 40), GM of the Phoenix Suns, is gracing our cover this month. Talk about someone who knows the city – he played for the Suns as a basketball player and the Suns’ fanbase went wild with excitement when he came back to run the business side of things, now leading a multiyear arena transformation. In addition to Jones, many other local residents are doing their part to make the Valley a better place. We highlight a few this month who are changing kids’ lives (page 32 and 34) through education and giving back to those less fortunate, and the lives of adults through fitness (page 29). Another thing that’s changing is the social landscape of the town, given all that’s transpiring in the world with the coronavirus. However, events are back, baby – while keeping health and safety in mind, of course. Looking to join in on the fun? Check out the annual philanthropic polo party (page 60) or the inaugural fall extravaganza that is Pumpkin Nights at the Princess (page 62). For those who are taking advantage of restaurants being back open, look no further than local hot spots with fireplaces for the perfect cozy dinner (page 58), the new fast-casual Stratta Kitchen (page 106), and local dishes getting “in the spirit” of Halloween (page 98). If still sticking close to home or maintaining more distance, check out some celeb-owned spirit brands (page 94) to enjoy at the house, an indoor garden for growing produce (page 85), and the private yoga classes at Hotel Valley Ho (page 53). Or, if looking for a break from the mundane at home, turn to local resorts for a new package to switch up any work routine, a girls weekend package (both page 82) or amazing resort suites (page 44) for rest and revel. Whatever this new season brings for you, whether its more time at home carving pumpkins; days spent outdoors enjoying the cool weather; or getting out of your comfort zone with one of the events, restaurants or spirits we’ve highlighted here, I hope you find some sort of refresh in your life and an internal “new beginning” to welcome fall. SQUAD SPIRIT

Neeley Neal, former NFL cheerleader and founder of Go Fit Win, fosters connectivity through dance

Neeley Neal, founder of Go Fit Win, a company that provides dance-inspired workouts for women who want to reconnect with cheer, got her first glimpse of cheerleading when she was in fifth grade watching her best friend’s sister lead pom practice in their basement.

“I was mesmerized by the counts, the choreography, the way the girls worked together,” Neal says. “I knew I wanted to be part of a team like that someday.” In seventh grade, Neal tried out for the cheerleading team – but she didn’t make the cut. “I was devastated to have to wait to

Pulse UP CLOSE try out again,” she says. “But I focused, rehearsed, sharpened my skills, memorized every chant while sitting in the bleachers, and came back to win a spot on the eighth grade squad.” From there, Neal took the cheerleading world by storm. During her senior year of high school, Neal and her coed competition squad won the 1997 United Spirit Association (USA) Spirit Nationals with a routine that she choreographed. The following year, Neal started working as a cheer staff head instructor and camp director with USA, which hosts summer training camps and events for students with a passion for all things spirit. After earning a degree in economics from Texas Christian University, where she was a collegiate cheer coach for the all-girl squad, Neal relocated to the Valley in 2004 to pursue her MBA at Arizona State University. In 2005, Neal became a cheerleader for the Arizona Cardinals, and the pieces fell into place. “The first time I took the field, it was a heart-racing mix of adrenaline, pride, muscle memory, and the realization that a lifelong dream was coming true,” she says. “It felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be.” Neal’s extracurriculars didn’t end with cheer. She served as CEO of the first student-led venture to present at the Invest Southwest Capital Conference and won the Edson Ventures Student Entrepreneurship Initiative two years running. Other cheerleading highlights include cheering at Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 and traveling to military bases in the U.S., Japan, Korea and Guam as a part of Armed Forces Entertainment. She even met her now-husband on a blind date set up by a fellow Cardinals cheerleader. “Nearly every facet of my life has been impacted by the unique experiences I’ve had with my cheer teams. The camaraderie, the passion, the energy of students at camps and competitions, the thousands of NFL fans on their feet, all reflecting that energy back at you, stays with you,” she says. “But the number one takeaway is confidence. It comes from experience, even if the experience isn’t the one you’d hoped for – like not making the squad on the first try!”

Passion Project After four fulfilling seasons with the Cardinals, two of which she spent as a line captain, Neal decided it was time to retire. “It felt right to move on to pursue other passions,” she says. “For the past nine years, I’ve curated a career in the tech industry as a product management leader at Scottsdale-based GoDaddy, whose mission is to empower everyday entrepreneurs.” Neal, now the proud mom of a daughter and triplet boys, soon came upon a realization. “Despite my wonderful achievements since retiring from the NFL, I felt like the ‘old me,’ the ‘vibrant me,’ was fading into the background. I was depleted going through the motions of daily life, filling everyone else’s cup without an outlet to replenish my own.” Even as Neal judged regional and national dance and cheer competitions on the West Coast, she knew her roots were calling to her. “I missed the physical and mental challenge of learning

30

So Scottsdale! October ‘20

choreography and performing regularly, but most of all, I missed the sense of community with my best friends and squad sisters.” When she couldn’t find a workout program or classes that fit her wishes, Neal felt the entrepreneurial bug biting and took matters into her own hands. In late 2019, Neal founded Go Fit Win to help women like her tap back into the joy and sisterhood they feel when cheering. While in-person pop-up classes are currently on hold due to the coronavirus, members have access to an online library of choreography, workout routines and virtual live classes taught by former professional cheerleaders and dancers, as well as monthly video calls with other members and guest speakers. There’s also an annual cheer camp for adults. “As adults, we can get wrapped up in the daily grind. The to-do list piles up and there aren’t as many opportunities to reconnect with activities you enjoy or make new friends,” Neal says. “At Go Fit Win, it’s about more than just shaking your poms. Our community of like-minded women share common passions and want to stay fired up about life – that’s what makes our bond so unique.” Neal views cheer, dance, and the feeling of connection they provide as renewable sources of energy. “You don’t have to apologize for investing time in yourself. Cheer revitalizes me to keep up with my tech career – and my trio of 2-year-olds and their 4-year-old sister – while continuing to serve the Go Fit Win community,” she says. “First you become a part of cheer, then it becomes a part of you. The adrenaline rush from being out on the field leaves an imprint. It’s a fired-up feeling that lasts forever.” Learn more at www.gofitwin.com.

LEARNING RE-IMAGINED

Jessi Dall redesigns education to keep children on track academically during the coronavirus and beyond

With some Valley schools closed for in-person learning for the foreseeable future and a number of parents opting for a virtual alternative, families are rushing to supplement distance learning. That’s where Jessi Dall and her company, Advantage Tutoring, come in. After a quick stint in dental school and five years of teaching in a classroom, Dall fused her creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit to create Advantage Tutoring (www.advantagetutoringaz.com), a unique, customized spin on traditional tutoring. “With each inquiry, a parent’s desires and their student’s needs lay the foundation for an individualized plan,” says Dall, who then works to pair the student with a tutor who can capitalize on the student’s strengths, while aiding in the their weaknesses. Since Advantage Tutoring’s launch in 2009, a student-centered approach has always been and will always be at the heart of Dall’s philosophy. In 2016, the company expanded to include five private offices and in 2019, Dall purchased her first building and designed a state-of-art facility to meets the needs of a continually growing business. “While we still offer in-home sessions, our center has become a place that so many students call an educational home,” she says. With parents having to go back to work or succumbing to the pressure of supervising online learning alone, Dall and her team are flexing with the times and redesigning education on their own terms to keep children on track academically. “We are now offering in-office and in-home learning pods, consisting of three to four students who are attending live virtual lessons,” Dall says. During pod sessions, a professional educator manages, redirects, problem solves, and encourages learning, while also providing direct instruction when needed. The pods offer social interactions and an affordable alternative for parents while continuing to provide individualized instruction. As a mom of three (ages 2, 4, and 6), the relentless but compassionate mompreneuer attests that the people who she meets are the best part of her job. “It’s my greatest joy to learn the life story of every student,” Dall says. “With relationships as the platform upon which I have built my business, I am able to guide students along academic journeys by truly understanding the thought processes of each individual.”

PITCHING IN

Former athlete Vicente Terán’s injury set him on a new path to help others

Ten years ago, Tucson native Vicente Terán stood on a pitcher’s mound thinking his life was well figured out. “I was a high school senior pitching for my school’s baseball team,” Terán says. “I’d recently accepted a scholarship to pitch at the University of Tennessee.” Then everything changed. “I cocked my arm to pitch and heard a loud pop,” Terán says. The resulting injury required surgery and significant rehab, forcing him to take virtual courses his freshman year from his parents’ home. During his recovery, the coach who offered him the scholarship in Tennessee left the school, in another blow. “My dad is an architect, which I always found fascinating, and my mom is a teacher, making education a priority to me,” Terán says. “So, I decided to hang up my cleats to focus and pursue my education in building.” Terán earned two bachelor’s degrees – one in construction management and another in structural engineering – from Arizona State University by 2015. While still in school, Terán began interning with CHASSE Building Team, a locally owned general contractor. The internship turned into a full-time position, eventually leading to his current role as a project manager. “One of our focuses is building and modernizing schools, a perfect fit for me,” says Terán, noting the company is currently rebuilding Hohokam Elementary School. “The work also opened the door to what has become a bigger passion than baseball: kids.” Through CHASSE, Terán also helps lead a program to bring STEM-based learning to students at partner schools. “When with the kids, I lit up, and everyone noticed,” Terán says. “As a result, our founder Barry Chasse encouraged me and supported me in joining Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club in 2017.” Through 20-30, Terán raises funds for organizations including Playworks Arizona, Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children and Arizona Burn Foundation, among others. He is also able to work directly with kids via programs ranging from back-to-school shopping nights to volunteer hours at the Boys & Girls Clubs. In 2019, Terán’s dedication earned him the Member of the Year Award. “I thought my life was set at 18, but couldn’t be happier to have been so wrong,” Terán says.

Pulse HIS STYLE

WARDROBE WANDERLUST Robert Annable’s creative style is influenced by domestic and international destinations BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Financial expert Robert Annable describes his style as “West Coast vibes with East Coast flair,” a natural response from someone who has practically lived all over the map. Originally from Southern California, the now-Scottsdale resident was raised in Texas and Boston. Annable’s fashion sense is a compilation of all of the places he’s lived, blending modern, contemporary and classic styles. A fresh pair of sneakers, colorful jeans and a crisp shirt is his signature look, but for client meetings and public presentations Annable opts for a fun sports coat and pocket square to showcase his personality. “My personal style has been greatly influenced by the fashion from London, New York City and Paris, and even by some of Hollywood’s leading men, from the classic and contemporary look of Bruce Wayne to James Dean’s unique style which has stood the test of time,” he says. Not only are Annable’s fashion choices sharp, they’re also creative. “To me, it’s about the whole picture. No piece of art is about one item, and I look at fashion the same way,” he says. “I love patterns, including a few polka dots or paisley in the pocket square and I am in love with rolled, tapered fit jeans and modern dress sneakers.”

What are your favorite brands? Ted Baker, Boss, Armani, Peter Millar, Paige and Goodlife – all modern fit. All of these have their own touch and flare, including crisp lines, strong colors, high-quality materials and some fun patterns. What is your No. 1 style tip? Whatever you do, don’t try to duplicate someone else’s style — find what compliments your personally and build around it. And get help – if fashion and putting outfits together is not your thing, don’t try to do it on your own. Work with a stylist. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My one and only Gucci item … Swarovski crystal Gucci sneakers. I bought them specifically for my formal events where my tux is clean and crisp.

CREATING THE RIGHT IMAGE Arryana Tate is on a mission to empower women through style

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Thanks to her sophisticated eye and passion for helping others, Arryana Tate helps Valley women create the personal image they’ve always wanted. As an image consultant and the founder of Luxe Girl Diaries, Tate uses her own elegant style to help women transform. “As an image consultant, I’m always being judged on my image, so it’s important for me to lead by example and wear the styles that make me feel like my best self,” she says. Tate’s go-to fall styles include a high-quality, over-the-knee boot, or pretty wrap dress. “I think wrap dresses are essential for every woman to have in her closet,” she says. With an emphasis on all things effortless, Tate draws inspiration from Jessica Alba. “I love the simplicity in her outfits while still managing a very polished look,” she says. “Naturally, I also love Audrey Hepburn, mostly for the feminine silhouettes in her garments and sophisticated appeal.” Tate’s closet is full of shades of nude and earth tones, but she’s embracing the fall trend of jewel tones, including yellows, greens, and deep pinks. “Geometric prints, such as houndstooth, are [also] really catching my eye this season because of how they’re being styled,” she says.

What is your favorite store? Intermix! It has a lot of my top brands and a large selection of other high-quality finds. On the website, there’s also styling suggestions that give me ideas for clients and keep me inspired. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? They would be interested in how I can pair so many different outfit combinations with a select amount of clothes. It is very functional, and I rarely feel like I don’t have anything to wear. What are your favorite brands? L’Academie, Zimmermann and Paige.

Former NBA player James Jones settles into his role as general manager of the Phoenix Suns

Most kids who grew up in the 1990s wanted to “be like Mike.” “I wanted to be like Lisa, Shay, Nita and Hope,” says James Jones, referring to his female aunts and cousins, each of whom played basketball at the collegiate level when Jones was a child and in his teens. When Jones, who was born and raised in Miami, wasn’t traveling to high school and college gyms to watch his relatives play, he was learning the game himself. “My dream growing up was to play for both my hometown teams: the University of Miami and the Miami Heat,” Jones says. “But a civics class almost ended those dreams before they began.” According to Jones, both his mother and stepfather (who raised him) insisted on education above all else. “I almost always performed well in school, especially in math and science,” Jones says. “But one day I came home with a progress report, and my mom saw I was on track for a C in civics.” At that time, Jones’ mother gave him two choices: he could play basketball and get straight As, or he could quit basketball and get straight As. “I raised that grade fast!” he says.

On the Court His talent on the court continued to match his academic prowess. During his senior year, Jones averaged 25.2 points, 12 rebounds, 2.5 assists, two steals, and six blocks per game, earning First-team All-State and First-team All-Dade honors. He was also named the Class 6A Player of the Year and the Miami Herald Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year. Both his athletic and academic aptitude earned him a scholarship to the University of Miami in 1999. And while players with legitimate NBA talent were – at that time – able to go pro right out of high school or after just one year of college, Jones chose another route. He attended college all four years, graduating in 2003 as a member of the National Honor Society with a degree in finance before declaring for the draft. The move would later lead him to the Phoenix Suns and his current role as the general manager; he just didn’t know that at the time. “I also met the love of my life in college, Destiny, when I was a sophomore. Destiny was my destiny as much as ball,” says Jones, who was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers in 2003. Of all the places he could have been drafted, even the Miami Heat, he was happy it was the Pacers. “There, I not only learned under coach Rick Carlisle, but played alongside NBA Hall of Fame great Reggie Miller,” Jones says. “He grew up learning about basketball from females as well, notably his WNBA great sister Cheryl Miller. So we got each other.” While Jones didn’t play a lot early on, after the infamous 2004 “Malice at the Palace” brawl between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers that broke out on live television and led to several players being suspended, Jones – who was not suspended – was able to gain playing time soon enough. He took advantage, and showed the world what he could do. His talent did not escape the Phoenix Suns, who signed him as a free agent in 2005. “This was during the first full year that Robert Sarver owned

42

So Scottsdale! October ‘20

the team,” says Jones, who married Destiny just before the move to Phoenix. “He was a banker, and I was a finance graduate, so we spent a lot of time talking statistics and investing when not focused on ball, and that relationship stuck.” The years Jones spent playing for the Suns – 2005 to 2007 – were among the winningest in the franchise’s history. In the 2005-2006 season, the team won 54 games and advanced to the Western Conference finals, and in the 2006-2007 season, the team won 61 games and advanced to the Western Conference semifinals. Jones’ three-point shooting – nearly averaging a 40% success rate – was a major factor in the team’s success. After Phoenix, Jones played for the Portland Trailblazers for one season before signing a contract with his hometown Miami Heat in 2008. Over the next six years, Jones helped the team to two NBA Championships, and took what he refers to as a master’s class in leadership and management thanks to then-Miami Heat president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra. “By about 30, I’d realized two of my greatest childhood dreams,” Jones says. “I’d also achieved new dreams in becoming a father and helping lead the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) as treasurer. During Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations between the NBPA and owners, I often crossed

paths with Robert, so we stayed in touch.” Jones also earned a third NBA Championship – in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers – before coming to a crossroads in his life after his 14th season in the league. “I had the option to play a 15th season, but our oldest child, Jadynn, was nearing high school and our other two, James and Jodie, were not far behind,” Jones says. “I always wanted to be both present and active in their lives as they got older, so I decided to retire from the NBA after the 2016 season.”

Off the Court The retirement didn’t last long, however, as Sarver reached out to Jones almost immediately, asking Jones to move back to Phoenix with his family to serve as the Suns vice president of basketball operations. When he agreed, the move was met with overwhelming joy by national sports pundits and local fans alike. His family were also fans, quickly falling in love with the Valley, especially teen sports programs and Steak 44, Ocean 44, DeFalco’s and True Food Kitchen – Jones’ favorite restaurants. “Our goal at the office is to build a team this town can be proud of. My goal is to make the Valley our home for a long time,” says Jones, who was promoted to Suns general manager in April

2019. Among his biggest projects since joining the team off the court has been the sweeping, multiyear transformation of the Suns arena, which is nicknamed “Project 201” as the venue’s address is 201 E. Jefferson St. in Downtown Phoenix. “For more than a quarter century, our downtown arena has been vital to the growth and development of our city’s urban core. As part of Project 201, the $230 million transformation of the arena will re-imagine our downtown venue and reinforce its standing as the premier sports and entertainment facility in the region,” Jones says. With the first phase set for completion this winter and the final phase to be completed in summer of 2021, Project 201 includes expanded concourses, new premium spaces and experiences, significant technology improvements including 5G technology, theater lighting, an all-new center hung scoreboard six times larger than the previous, elevated food and beverage offerings and much more. Jones is just as busy making an impact on the court as well. After suspending games for several months amid COVID-19, the Phoenix Suns were among the teams chosen to play in the 2020 NBA Bubble, an isolated area with strict rules to protect players and other personnel while salvaging the 2019-2020 season. The Suns shocked the entire basketball community when they won every single game in the bubble, the only such team to do so. “We came together on the national stage and showed the world that the Suns are to be respected,” Jones says. “The past several years of sweat equity, teamwork and planning fueled the eight-game win streak. It will motivate us going into next season.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT SKIN CANCER Dr. Anne Walter, founder of Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists Dr. Anne Walter is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon practicing in Scottsdale, Arizona. She founded Dermatology & Skin Surgery Specialists over five years ago. She has a special interest in procedural dermatology, including the treatment of skin cancers and cosmetic procedures. Q. How often should I get checked? Dr. Anne Walter: Most adults should get a skin check to establish a baseline exam in their early 20’s. From there, your dermatologist will likely recommend annual skin checks. More frequent exams may be recommended for those with a family history of skin cancer or personal history of skin cancer, precancers, or other risk factors. Q. What does a “skin check” entail? Dr. Walter: A skin check is an appointment where your dermatologist reviews your skin in order to identify precancerous lesions and skin cancers, as well as educate you about benign lesions and what to look for that should raise concern in the future. Your dermatologist should thoroughly examine your skin, hair, and nails during the skin check. Q. How common is skin cancer? Dr. Walter: One in five Americans develop skin cancer during their life. Approximately two people die from skin cancer every hour. The most common

types of skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Melanoma occurs in approximately two percent of the population. When detected early, melanoma has a 99% five-year survival rate!

GIDDY UP FOR GOOD

The annual polo party returns with a new name, new charitable efforts and new safety precautions amid COVID-19

BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE

In March, Jason Rose, co-founder and co-owner of Bentley Scottsdale Championships, began to survey past attendees to discern if the Valley’s annual polo event should take place this year. “The responses were fascinating,” Rose says. “Some said cancel altogether, but a strong majority said to do everything possible to proceed.” The Stella Artois Polo Classic: Presented by Ketel One (a new moniker for this year’s event) will take place Nov. 7, with gates opening at 10:30 a.m. The event will look a little different this year, with City of Scottsdale-approved adjustments. Strict safety procedures will be in place, including spaced out outdoor seating options, a social distancing security team, mandatory masks, and sanitation stations. The open-air event will begin with a match between Arizona Polo Club and Columbia. In the signature charity match at 1:30 p.m., professional polo players Jared Sheldon and John Gobin will go head-to-head in support of Arizona Equine Rescue and Southwest Wildfire. Newcomer Morehouse College Polo Club of Morehouse College, an Atlanta-based private, historically Black men’s college Martin Luther King Jr. attended, will take on the Women’s All-Stars in the final match of the day, beginning at 3:30 p.m. “At a time of important racial and social dialogue, we cannot think of a better team [than the Morehouse College Polo Club] to be participating this year,” Rose says. Other event highlights will include a sneak peek of the Barrett-Jackson Car

Collector Auction, impressive car displays (featuring new models) by the event’s automotive sponsors and glamorous fashion shows. For an additional fee, attendees can rock out with local musician Roger Clyne at the post-event concert. But perhaps what’s most exciting about the Stella Artois Polo Classic is its new charitable endeavors, like helping local charities that have been devastated in recent months by COVID-19. “Because we have such a large and great outdoor platform, we are making space available to local charities and schools to use our event to raise funds, just as they would at their own fundraising events,” Rose says.

At Haunted Plaza, attendees will also find a gargantuan, 8-foot-tall pumpkin that’s totally Instagrammable, and Pie House, where attendees can purchase delicious seasonal bites and beverages. Likewise, The Patches Seasonal Shoppe will be open for patrons interested in purchasing

fall-inspired treats and gifts. For kids and kids at heart, the Jack-OLantern Lawn will showcase spooktacular rides and games, like the multi-acre Hay Maze. An additional highlight, Lanterns of Hope will be located at the Princess Plaza Fountain where attendees will be able to inscribe their special intention for the season on a complimentary lantern before launching it on the fountain. Each night will conclude with an extravagant firework show at 9 p.m. “We know so many celebrations and seasonal traditions have been put on pause this year, so we are thrilled to offer our neighbors with a bit of holiday magic that they can still enjoy with confidence,” Gilbert says.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

The Ballards create wood signs, pet portraits and colorful merchandise through The Painted Ladies

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTOS BY MADELINE BALLARD

Locally-owned art business The Painted Ladies is made up of two ladies – and three men, all members of the Ballard Family. Co-founded in 2013 by husband and wife Jonathan and Jeni Ballard, The Painted Ladies (www.thepaintedladies.org) began by selling art and signage orchestrated on reclaimed wood, often including fun, cheeky humor. “We were painting contractors, painting homes and businesses, and when the market crashed, we decided we didn’t want to do it anymore,” Jeni says. The couple, who were living in Show Low at the time, sold all of their commercial painting equipment and switched gears. The Painted Ladies launched shortly thereafter when a custom sign Jeni crafted for her sister created a buzz. Demand for the Ballards’ signs snowballed just as they moved to the Valley. “The first show we did was at Thieves Market at Big Surf, and we did so well,” Jeni says. The Painted Ladies has since expanded to include more members of the Ballard family. Jonathan helps Jeni build and paint the signs, which are made from old wood pallets and salvaged plywood. Two of their sons, Cayden and Jonah, are also involved, in addition to Jonah’s wife, Madline. Madeline handles photography, social media and their online store while Jonah assists in setting up for shows and also paints signs. Custom pet portraits are his specialty (and in high demand), featuring whimsical splashes of color. “He’s the one that does all the funky art,” Jeni says of Jonah. “He does the cactus and the bananas, plus he does all the animals and dog paintings.” The Painted Ladies recently participated in Pet-A-Palooza The Day of The Dog — a pet-friendly festival in Scottsdale — where Jonah painted more than 100 dogs during the two-day event. In addition to custom pet portraits and an array of signs, The Painted Ladies also offers T-shirts and stickers with funny sayings and unique imagery. Included in that is a large amount of desert decor. In terms of custom orders, they pretty much make anything, from United States silhouettes to signs for any room in the house. Signage and merchandise are available online and at retail stores including The Merchantile of Scottsdale and Carmen on 5th, both located in Old Town Scottsdale. In addition to continuing on with all that they offer currently, the Ballards are looking forward to continuing to grow the company. “Some of us want a brick-and-mortar store, but I really enjoy doing shows and being part of The Merchantile, where I’m in a group with a lot of amazing artists,” Jeni says. “Our online business is also really picking up, too.”

Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

2020 CHEVROLET CORVETTE The all-new model is a supercar bargain BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $59,995

Corvette has been a part of the car scene for almost 70 years and is as American as baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. And until now, Corvette has been instantly recognizable as, well, a Corvette. Chevrolet flipped the switch with its 2020 model, by far the hottest and most talked about car of the year. The eighth-generation 2020 Corvette, known as the C8, is completely different in every way from its preceding models. For starters, for the first time, the engine is located in the middle of the vehicle, behind the seats and showcased through the glass rear hatch. Also different is the new eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission as, again, for the first time a manual transmission is not available. After driving the new Corvette it’s easy to see why Chevrolet made the change. The new Corvette is powered by a 495-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-8 engine with 470 pound-feet of torque. On the road, it went from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. While that’s an impressive number, an even more impressive one is the starting price of just $59,995. There is simply no other vehicle in the

world equipped with the Corvette’s power and driving performance for that price. Additionally, for an extra $7,500, you can upgrade to a convertible. All coupe models come standard with a removable roof panel. There are three trim levels offered: 1LT; 2LT; and 3LT, which mostly adds upgraded technology, an enhanced audio system, cameras, and upgraded interior trim. The 2LT tested here came equipped with the optional Z51 Performance Package ($5,000) which adds five more horsepower, performance exhaust, larger Brembo brakes, performance suspension, exterior modifications and more. On the road, it’s clear the Corvette delivers extreme power and performance handling unlike any preceding Corvette. The grip is tenacious, the acceleration ferocious, yet it is agile and confident, with a surprisingly serene ride quality. Overall, the new Corvette is beyond new; it’s radically different in capability, technology, and design, more akin to Lamborghini, Ferrari or Ford GT. Thoroughly impressive, it’s a supercar bargain.

Price as tested: $72,295 Engine: 6.2-L, V-8 Horsepower: 495 Fuel Economy: 15/27 mpg city/ highway Seating: 2 Fab features: Gorgeous new design inside and out Powerful yet refined Quiet, comfortable and high-tech interior

FASCIA: THE KEY TO IMMUNITY, ANTI-AGING, AND PAIN RELIEF Fascia is the connective tissue and watery fluid (with its associated proteins, fibers and gels) that interconnects all 70 trillion cells that make up the human body. This system has been long overlooked in the western world, but it is finally becoming heavily researched. You may have tried different therapies to manage stress and pain like meditation, yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy, massage, stretching, mindfulness, and frankly anything that involves moving, touch, and mind-body connection. Your fascia is the system responsible for creating the benefits that come from these therapies. Your fascia can be something that you mindfully work on to make healthy, and in turn you WILL BE healthy. If you neglect the fascia, it can cripple you. When we perform repetitive stress movements; including prolonged sitting with poor posture, playing a sport, or even holding a cell phone, we start to create more collagen fibers along the line of stress that can over time become fibrotic. This means that the connective tissue becomes so dehydrated, thick and stiff that it no longer allows for a gliding motion to occur between the tissues. Ultimately this can lead to the proliferation of fascial adhesions capable of compressing up to 2000 pounds of force. This zone of compression acts as a vice grip or boa constructor on your nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic system, muscles, tendons, cells and even bone. The millions of tiny nerve endings that live amongst the fascia can create 1000 times the pain response when chronically compressed. Fascia is responsible for debilitating pain. One of the most interesting findings in my practice has been the Fascia release at the forearms to heal neck pain, and calf and shin release to heal low back pain. If you think about it, what parts of the body do we use the most on any given day? Our hands and our feet. We use our forearm muscles and associated fascia to control our hands. Our

hands grip weights, cell phones, groceries, babies, steering wheels, knives, golf clubs, hair dryers, curling irons, computers, etc. And the calves, shins, and feet endure the body’s tireless ability to walk, run, stand and move. This fascial compression in the extremities becomes the same fascia

52 year old female

breast cancer. The group that received 10 min of chest stretching every day for four weeks, noticed a 52% reduction in cancer! Why did this happen? I believe it is because when we move, stretch, and create glide in our connective tissue, we generate water. This zone of tissue that was fixed, and matted with cancer was able to receive new channels of watery rich flow that allowed for white blood cells to get close enough to the cancer cells to start destroying them. Other areas of human healing associated with the fascia include any and all musculoskeletal pain, cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation and releasing trapped emotions and energies. that turns into the neck and low back. That is why it is the missing link medical practitioners have unwittingly overlooked in the efforts to relieve consistent, chronic neck and low back pain. Another topic of current relevance is understanding how fascia plays a vital role in the overall health of the immune system. It’s quite simple, your fascia system is your immune system. The majority of our white blood cells live in the watery matrix of the fascia where they roam from cell to cell detecting harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi, and cancer. Touting 3,216-square-feet, calling this Tuscan-like villa spacious is somewhat of an understatement. The property, located in Silverleaf, is equipped with four bedrooms (two en suites in the main house), 4 1/2 bathrooms, and two guest houses. Traditional desert landscaping dresses the home’s front yard, with a long brick pathway leading to the front entry. Impressive stucco pillars hearken back to ancient Greece or Rome and surround a welcoming and well-lit front courtyard, anchored by the grand glass and cast-iron front doors. Light-colored walls and marble flooring complement the rich wooden accents seen throughout the estate’s communal spaces, like the wood ceiling beams in the front foyer, dining room and living room. Similarly, the kitchen’s dark wood cabinets pop against the granite countertops which have flecks of white, light gray and dusty yellow. The kitchen, offering ample storage and luxury appliances, flows seamlessly into the dining and living rooms. In these rooms, noticeable features include a floor-to-ceiling accent wall made entirely of stone and an adobe-style fireplace. Each carpeted bedroom has high ceilings and access to outside, whether that access is onto a balcony or into the home’s backyard. The master bedroom ups the ante with hardwood flooring and an arched wall opening that leads to the master bath. Here, two vanities sit on either side of a tub that overlooks the pristine backyard. Gold sconces and a chandelier compete this regal, tranquil space. The heart of this Silverleaf villa is the backyard. A magnificent pool with jets, a waterfall and a raised spa sit front and center of it all. Like the front courtyard, the backyard patio is formed by similar stucco pillars and has plenty of shade during the warmer months. From the built-in barbecue to the putting green area and fireplace to the covered patio, there are plenty of spots to entertain or peacefully recharge in one’s solitude in this outdoor oasis. 10126 E. BEST OF THE NORTHWEST Whistler wows outdoor enthusiasts and foodies alike in fall and winter months

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, makes a very strong case for the west coast truly being the best coast. The province is bordered by the Alaskan Panhandle, Yukon and Northwest Territories to the north and Washington, Idaho, and Montana to the south. Alberta lies to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Given this, one might say British Colombia is the jewel in the center of the crown that is the Pacific Northwest. Within this jewel is Whistler. Technically a resort municipality and a renowned mecca for skiers, snowboarders, hikers, mountain bikers, golfers and foodies alike, the entertainment options in this outdoor oasis are nearly unparalleled. The resort municipality itself features both Whistler Village and Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort, which combines both Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain’s attractions and amenities into one. The two previously separate ski areas first partnered in 1993, formally integrated all operations in 2003 and opened the Peak 2 Peak Gondola in 2008, which spans the distance between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, offering a world record-breaking, 11-minute, 2.75-mile journey and access to the full terrain. At 8,171 acres, Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski area in North America. Both the village and resort temporarily closed amid COVID19 this past spring but have been in various stages of reopening. Plans have been announced to fully reopen for the winter season in late November, with some modifications including face masks, reservations and social distancing protocols.

Luxe Accommodations The region’s top hotels and resorts have similarly modified and reopened, notably, the legendary Fairmont Chateau Whistler, which some will remember as famously serving as the backdrop for British Columbia native Jillian Harris’ season of The Bachelorette. The ski-in, ski-out alpine resort – named among the top five hotels in all of Canada by Travel + Leisure – is located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain and features an 18-hole championship golf course, multiple dining operations and over 700 rooms and suites. There is also an extensive list of guest-only privileges included in one’s stay, such as daily yoga classes; shuttle service; valet service for skis, bikes and golf clubs; heated pools and hot tubs; seasonally available tennis courts; unlimited driving range use; and a car service through a partnership with BMW. The most notable service is the resort’s Whistler experience guide, a private concierge who can plan tailored experiences and arrange reservations for all activities and restaurants.

Mountain Adventures Certainly, the most obvious adventures are those that take place on the snow-covered mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb. But, before heading up to the fun, be sure to pay a visit to the nearby Whistler Olympic Park, which was created to host the biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Today, it is open to the public for tours and the perfect stop before or after heading up the mountains. Now, about those mountains. For the more athletically inclined, there are back country ski tours, snowboarding, heli-skiing, mountain tours, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and both Nordic and cross-country skiing. On the tamer side, there is also bald eagle viewing, dog sledding and even sleigh rides as the holiday season approaches. The Children’s Adventure Park on Blackcomb and Tree Fort on Whistler are great for families as are Bubly Tube Park, a tubing area on Blackcomb Mountain, and multiple Nintendo Gaming Lounges that offer the chance to recharge one’s batteries while trying out several of the iconic brand’s games.

Wine & Dine It’s certainly easy to work up an appetite with activities on the mountain. One of the region’s best dining experiences – Crystal Hut – is atop Blackcomb, accessible only via a Snowcat. During dinner, expect fondue over candlelight accompanied by fine wines and some of the most sweeping views in western Canada. Down the mountain in the village, another couple hundred of options await, including Araxi Restaurant + Oyster Bar, one of Whistler’s top fine dining establishments; Bearfoot Bistro, an elegant French option with Dom Perignon by the glass; Rimrock Cafe, a rustic spot that has been a favorite in the area for over 25 years; and Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar, a traditional steakhouse with an impressive array of cocktails and wine. Given the sheer number of amazing places to drink and dine, consider treating yourself or the group to a Whistler Tasting Tour, which offers several types of progressive meal options.

Outdoor Relaxation Certainly, shopping, live music and other attractions abound in and around the Village, as does one final must for a visitor’s bucket list: the Scandinave Spa. Renowned for cleansing the skin, improving physical conditioning and promoting a sense of well-being, this outdoor experience occurs in three stages: first warming the body, then a short rinse in cold water and finally relaxing in a quiet place. Each sequence, hot–cold–relaxation, takes about 30 minutes and should be repeated three to four times for maximum results. This age-old Finnish tradition is experienced through a wood-burning Finnish sauna, a eucalyptus steam room, thermal and Nordic waterfalls, hot baths, cold plunges, solariums and relaxation areas with outdoor fireplaces. Go ahead, take the plunge. And not just into the baths, but the entire Whistler experience. Learn more at www.whistlerblackcomb.com.

CELEBRITY SIPS Spirits with real star power BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

In 2013, George Clooney and partners founded Casamigos tequila. By 2017, it was among the fastest-growing super-premium tequilas worldwide, leading him to sell it for $700 million. Clooney, however, is not the only star in the spirit industry. Here are some similarly sensational celeb-backed brands.

Aviation American Gin In 2018, Ryan Reynolds acquired a large stake in this Oregon-based company, known for its smooth, bold and floral take on gin using botanicals such as lavender and Indian sarsaparilla versus excessive juniper. Like Casamigos, Diageo purchased the brand earlier this year in a deal worth up to an estimated $600 million, but Reynolds is still on board. $24.99. Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey Founded in 2018 by MMA champion Conor McGregor, the brand and its name were inspired by McGregor’s love of Ireland, its people and Irish whiskey. It is a blend of Ireland’s finest golden grain and single malt whiskey, triple distilled and aged in oak barrels resulting in a smooth taste with hints of vanilla, honey-like sweetness and toasted wood. $29.99. Crystal Head Vodka Comedy icon Dan Aykroyd and renowned artist John Alexander created this vodka, which hails from Canada. There are two expressions of the vodka: the traditional, which is made using corn, peaches and cream, and Aurora, which is wheat-based and has a bit more boldness and spice. Neither contains additives, glycerol citrus oils or sugars, allowing the natural taste to shine through. Starting at $49.99. Wild Turkey Longbranch A collaboration between Wild Turkey and Matthew McConaughey, Longbranch is an eight-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon made in small batches and refined in American oak with

94

So Scottsdale! October ‘20

charcoals made using mesquite from McConaughey’s native Texas. The smoky and subtly sweet result earned a 2020 Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. $39.99. Revel Spirits This is Us’ Justin Hartley recently invested in Revel Spirits, which features a new agave-based spirit called Avila. Avila is made from 100% pure Agave in the Morelos region of Mexico by a group of families using a roasting and steaming process. There are currently three expressions: Blanco, which is unaged; Reposado, aged 12 months in American whiskey barrels; and Anejo, aged 24 months in French oak. Starting at $48.99. Teremana Small Batch Tequila Not only does this tequila rock; it’s owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Made using 100% mature blue weber agave from the Highlands of Jalisco, both the Blanco and nicely aged Reposado are sipping tequilas best enjoyed neat or on the rocks. Fun fact: Johnson personally worked with a Mexican family-owned distillery to build the space where the tequila is made. Starting at $29.99. King St. Vodka In 2019, Kate Hudson launched King St. Vodka. Distilled seven times and made using only alkaline water, it is nearly odorless and quite neutral on the palate. The name was inspired by King Street in New York, where Hudson used to live and famously entertain, and the vodka is distilled in her native California. $24.99.

Modern Margarita’s Hot Mango showcases the spicier notes in tequila

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

The cocktail menu at Modern Margarita features spirits that derive from the spiny succulent native to Mexico known as the agave plant. “We have more than 60 highland and lowland blanco, reposado, and anejo tequilas as well as several mezcal options for even the pickiest of palates,” says Kyle Mason, general manager and lead mixologist of Modern Margarita. “And while we offer tasting flights and spirits on their own, our favorite way to showcase the versatile spirits is in our margaritas.” Modern offers a menu with over a dozen margarita options. Among the most popular is the Hot Mango ($12). It starts with Milagro Silver Tequila, an estate-grown, 100% blue agave tequila that is both smooth and crisp with vegetal and citrus notes and a black pepper finish. “We combine the tequila with Mango Real, which is a puree infused with Alphonso mangoes from India, as well as Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur, lime juice and a house sour we make using fresh citrus fruits,” Mason says. The final ingredient is a syrup Mason’s team makes by reducing agave with sugar, water and jalapenos. After a good shake, the contents are strained into a coupe glass with ice. The glass itself is rimmed with a combination of sugar, salt and Tajín, a popular Mexican seasoning made with chili peppers, lime and salt. “When the glass touches your lips, there is a burst of spice from the Tajín, which gives way quickly to the acidity and citrus notes as well the agave sweetness,” Mason says. “The jalapeno is there, but due to the smoothness in the tequila, it doesn’t overpower.” Modern Margarita, located at 5410 E. BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Brent Menke is the co-founder and executive chef of The Mick, a modern French brasserie featuring small plates inspired by regions once part of the French colonial empire.

Can you define French colonial empire? For us, it means regions that were under French rule anytime from the 1600s to present. Think Creole New Orleans, Africa, India and Southeast Asia as well as France itself. Which dish on your menu would best illustrate this concept for readers? Our pork belly banh mi slider has Asian char sui glazed pork belly and kimchi slaw but is served on brioche. It actually has a little Arizona as well, given this Arizona native tops it with Sriracha mayo. You’re an Arizona native! I grew up in Paradise Valley and graduated from Chaparral in 1988 and then from the University of Arizona in 1992. Like most people from Phoenix, I grew up going to Mexico, where I lived for fishing. How did you get interested in cooking? After college, I wanted to fish more than find an office job, so I became a deckhand on a motor yacht en route from the Caribbean to the French Riviera. I worked my way up in yachting, eventually serving as boson on private luxury charters. It wasn’t until our chef went on vacation and the captain needed someone to cook for the crew that I got into the kitchen. Can you share your culinary journey? In the late 1990s, I moved from the deck to the kitchen as a sous chef. In 1999, I studied at The Culinary Institute of America and eventually found myself as the head chef for the thenowner of Yankee Candle. This led us to open a business, The Farm Table at Kringle Candle in Massachusetts, in 2010. My family moved back to Arizona in 2016 when my father fell ill. While caring for him I reconnected with a friend who sold me on the idea of The Mick. What would readers be surprised to know about you? In 2015, my wife – who is French – and I took a year off to backpack the world with our kids, then 10 and 12, visiting over a dozen countries. The Mick Brasserie, 9719 N. HIGH SPIRITS Local dishes get a lift in flavor from libations

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Seafood Medley Papal Cioppino

Tomaso’s Inspired by the rustic Italian-American fish stew, this take on cioppino is bursting with fresh shrimp, calamari, lobster tail, clams, mussels, king crab and succulent sea bass. The flavors succeed on all levels thanks to the addition of both white wine and saffron during the cooking process. This savory stew is made by combining saffron-infused tomato with a dry white wine, olive oil, shallots and seafood stock before adding a healthy dose of garlic and onion. Served family style, the seafood and fragrant sauce comes nestled atop a bed of linguine. $42. www.tomasos.com.

Modelo Braised Bison

Gadzooks Enchiladas & Soup This dish boasts both a unique protein in bison as well as depth of flavor thanks to beer. It starts off with bison that has been braised in Negra Modelo beer, which adds hints of a roasted caramel malt flavor. From there, broth, onion, garlic and cumin are added to the bison, which is braised for hours. Served in either a corn or half-corn, half-flour tortilla, or piled atop any one of Gadzooks’ rich soups, this tender treat can be made enchilada style, with over a dozen topping options to choose from. Prices vary. www.gadzooksaz.com.

Seared Shrimp Taco

Beyond salt and pepper, clever Valley chefs have another trick up their sleeves to enhance the flavor of both sweet and savory dishes: alcohol. Beer, wine and spirits can often help intensify flavors, add depth and enhance the aromas of the key ingredients. Here are some of our favorite spirit-infused menu spotlights.

CRUjiente Tacos A handmade, organic blue corn tortilla is the blank canvas for this Thai-influenced dish. The masterpiece in the making begins with Thai green curry shrimp. To make the curry, 2018 Basa white wine by one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, Telmo Rodriguez, serves as a secret ingredient as well as the popular Japanese condiment Mirin, made with sweet sake. The spirits are then combined with silky coconut milk, lime for acidity, jalapenos and a piquante curry paste for an extra kick. Complementing this culinary work of art is a topping made of pickled carrots, onions, cucumber, basil and Fresno chile peppers. From $5.50. www.crutacos.com.

Magic Beer Cheese Queso

Huss Brewing Co. True to its name, the Magic Beer Cheese Queso is just that: magic! To make this crowd-pleasing comfort food – which we recommend as an enhancement to the Rustic Pretzel starter – Monterrey Jack and Parmesan cheese are mixed with butter, flour, milk, onion powder, and white pepper to create the base of the sauce. Then the magic happens, literally, when Huss’ own Magic in the Ivy Pale Ale is added to the mix. A tribute to the Chicago

layers of vanilla cake, followed by a hefty spritz of the rum to add both moistness and that unmistakable island-inspired flavor in every bite. The cake is then layered with white chocolate mousse and covered with icing. For the final touch, toasted coconut coats the outside layer of icing. $10. www.tommybahama.com.

Camarones al Tequila

Los Sombreros Obviously, tequila is the key ingredient in this shrimp dish. Cuervo Tradicional Reposado, a 100% blue agave tequila that is aged in oak barrels, is the base of this dish’s refreshing, tart sauce, which is also made with fresh tomato chunks and spices. Once simmered for hours, the smooth and complex sauce is paired with fresh jumbo shrimp and thick, smoky bacon. From there, it’s topped with chipotle crema and layered with slivers of avocado, thinly sliced rings of red onion and fresh cilantro. $20. www. lossombreros.com. .

Moules-Frites

Cubs’ ivy-covered outfield wall, this West Coast-style pale ale boasts hints of fresh grapefruit and citrus. $3. www.hussbrewing.com.

Banana Bread French Toast

Daily Dose Amid the pandemic, many have tried to make banana bread at home with varying levels of success. Succeeding on all levels is Daily Dose, which makes a perfectly moist, sweet and satisfying version fresh each day – but with a twist. Re-imagined as French toast, homemade banana bread is pan-fried and topped with sweet candied pecans and a vanilla glaze made from Trader Vic’s Silver Rum. To top it off, literally, caramelized bananas and oozy caramel are piled on this indulgent item. $11.50. www. dailydosegrill.com.

Zinqué The wine-based, Euro-style classic at Zinqué is inspired by the classic French bistro menu item. To start off the entree, shallots are sauteed with copious amounts of white wine as well as pastis (an anise-flavored spirit), parsley and cream. Eventually, the ingredients reduce and then thicken, making a perfect base. Briny mussels are then added, which benefit from the acid in the wine as well as the pastis, and open the bouquet of the shellfish along with the richness of the cream. The dish is then served with freshly made frites (or fries), which are the perfect vehicle to soak up the sauce. $21. www.lezinque.com.

Short Rib Alla Vaccinara

Fat Ox A twist on the classic Roman butcher-style oxtail stew, this modern take substitutes the oxtail for short ribs braised with celery, carrots and aromatic herbs, and slow simmered until the meat is practically melting off the bone. The ribs are then paired with agrodolce, a traditional sweet and sour sauce in Italian cuisine. To ramp up the flavor, this Italian eatery simmers the dish with Barolo wine, raisins and charred broccolini, providing a smoky-sweet crunch to balance out the fork-tender meat. $45. www.ilovefatox.com.

A flashback to 1989 for many Scottsdale residents likely conjures memories of The Phoenician being the spot to be – after all, it had opened just less than a year earlier, and with big plans for its culinary program in place. Under the direction of chef Alessandro “Alex” Stratta – who was just 24 years old at the time – the resort opened Mary Elaine’s. Over the next nine years, Stratta was recognized for his his work at the property, including being featured in Food & Wine Magazine as one of America’s 10 best new chefs and winning the prestigious James Beard Best Chef: Southwest award. In 1998, Stratta moved to Las Vegas, earning similar acclaim while working for multiple high-end concepts at the Mirage and Wynn Las Vegas, among others, and he appeared on Iron Chef USA and Top Chef Masters. Stratta returned to the Valley in 2015, initially heading the kitchens at the FOUND:RE, Omni Montelucia Resort & Spa and Arizona Biltmore before putting pen to paper on his own concept, Stratta Kitchen, in 2019. In August 2020, the concept – a deliciously approachable twist on flavorful

Mediterranean fare, with most dishes priced at less than $12 and all developed with nutrition and health in mind – became a reality, opening in the Mercado on Hayden space that formerly housed The Melting Pot. Stratta partnered with Genuine Concepts, known for The Vig and more, to bring the 3,200-square-foot light and bright restaurant with ample patio space and contemporary art throughout to fruition. “Today’s diners are looking for high quality, natural and flavorful food that’s both convenient and accessible,” Stratta says. “The Mediterranean approach to cooking is sunny, inherently healthy, light and full of flavor, focusing on fresh, seasonal and optimum quality ingredients.” The concept of a fast-casual approach to eating whole foods is very personal to Stratta, who has been on his own health journey in recent years, successfully battling and overcoming colon cancer and losing nearly 100 pounds in the process. To regain his health, Stratta gravitated toward a natural, whole foods approach to cooking and eating. Feeling better than he ever has, his mission is to now share what he has learned with the masses. The menu itself has four main sections: To Share or Not to Share, Greens, Grains, and The Goods. To top meals, there is a lengthy listing of sauces, notably elderberry balsamic vinaigrette and Moroccan spice tahini. There is also a dessert section, and dairy-free, gluten-free and vegetarian options are offered. Menu highlights include a vegetable and potato frittata ($9), whipped ricotta cheese and walnut romesco ($9), the Cali coast salad ($11.50), and Alaskan sterling salmon ($9). The eatery offers beer and wine as well as family style takeout meals and a kids menu. Stratta Kitchen is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Stratta Kitchen, 8260 N.
