Contents This year more than ever before, I’ve really stopped to think about what I’m thankful for: my health, my husband (and rescue pup, Hank!), my family, my close friends, and working with So Scottsdale! all come to mind. As Thanksgiving approaches, I think it’s safe to assume many people are feeling the same way. The month of November always signals a month of reflection and gratitude, but COVID-19 has really put things into perspective for me.

This month we focused on people who are making our community a better place (something I think we can all be thankful for!), starting with Laura Madden. Her passion for sustainability is truly inspiring. We also talked to seven founders of local nonprofits that are either new to the scene or aren’t super well-known yet (but should be!). They share the personal inspiration behind each one of their organizations starting on page 50.

Sean Sachs turned an entry-level job at a locally owned resort into a lifetime of service

As a child, Sean Sachs wasn’t sure what he wanted to be when he grew up.

“I had some pretty strong feelings about what I didn’t want to be, though,” Sachs says. “I was raised in the small community of Wiggins, which is in rural Colorado. Within the community, my

mom was a teacher, my dad was a principal, and nearly everyone else was a farmer.”

As such, Sachs shied away from both the education and agricultural paths, instead setting his sights on finding a career and making a life for himself in a larger city where more

opportunities existed.

“I ended up in the Valley on a whim and – in part – thanks to a men’s singlet, which is that tight, leotard-like uniform that wresters wear,” Sachs says. “Toward the end of high school, a close friend happened to be being recruited by Arizona State University and I thought I’d take a look at it as well.”

While that friend ended up choosing another school, Sachs fell in love with the vibrant atmosphere of the campus, not to mention the weather, and enrolled at ASU in 1994 to study marketing. Degree in hand by 1998, Sachs was ready to make Arizona his long-term home.

“I just needed a job so I could afford to stay,” says Sachs, who relocated from Tempe to Scottsdale. “And while she wasn’t wearing a singlet, a different good friend is to thank for introducing me to the job that would change my life and lead me to starting my own family.”

Said friend had a job at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, one of the few independently owned and operated resorts in Arizona.

She got him an interview for an entry-level sales position at the hotel, and after interviewing, he started the job weeks later.

Continuing a Legacy Now, after 23 years, Sachs serves as the resort’s senior vice president, tasked with being part of the leadership team that manages the entire property.

He credits his longevity to finding strong mentors, notably owner John Dawson, an icon in the Scottsdale business and philanthropic communities who passed in 2019. In the 1980s, Dawson famously purchased the resort – then the Sheraton Scottsdale Inn and Villas – and not only renamed it the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, but took it through a $40 million renovation that expanded the property from 20 acres with 260 rooms to 40 acres with 404 rooms and an additional 30,000 square feet of meeting space.

“Almost 40 years ago, John had a vision for Scottsdale as both a preeminent global tourism and meeting destination when others still looked at it as a desert with a few golf courses. While you can’t teach vision; I feel I learned through unparalleled passion and commitment on how to set clear goals, be persistent and relentless and make what might seem to many a dream into reality,” says Sachs, who worked with Dawson and the executive team in more recent years on another sweeping renovation to ensure the resort’s viability and legacy would continue.

Through the most recent $15 million renovation completed in 2018, every room and suite on property was given a headto-toe modernization that included upgraded furniture, artwork, lighting, charging stations and mounted televisions. In addition, all common areas, the ballroom and meeting spaces received a similar upgrade, as did AV and technical capabilities property wide.

“With the addition of an incredible director of food and beverage, we elevated our offerings throughout the resort, including investing in our wood-fired pizza oven and significantly enhanced banquet options,” Sachs says.

Plaza of Love Beyond mentorship, Sachs also credits his longevity at the resort to true love.

“While yes, I love the Plaza itself; if not for my job here I would have never met Lauren,” Sachs says.

In 2005, as Sachs earned his way to a national sales director role, a woman named Lauren Lotito joined the team in his former entry-level role.

“It took me nearly a year to get her to agree to let me take her on a date,” Sachs says. “But when she finally agreed; she fell fast. And I mean it literally. On the night of our first date, she tripped down the stairs.”

Thankfully, the rest of the date was far smoother sailing, and Lotito kept falling for Sachs. The two married in October 2009, welcomed their first child, Collin, in 2011, and their second, Emma, in 2013. Lotito, now Sachs, still works at the resort today as the senior national sales manager.

“As you can imagine, the past several months have been very different both at work and home for both Lauren and me,” says Sachs, who had to brush up on his fourth grade math and second grade science in recent months to help their kids with virtual learning alongside leading the Plaza through the most precarious time in its history.

Looking to 2021, Sachs plans to continue diligent, roundthe-clock efforts to keep employees and guests safe, but also has an eye to additional upgrades both inside and out.

“Lauren, the longstanding team here and I all want to ensure John’s legacy continues for another 40 years,” Sachs says. “And hopefully more.”

Erica Ptak and Ashley Sheen launch lifestyle brand Desert Dweller Co. to further statewide water conservation efforts

Arizona natives Erica Ptak and Ashley Sheen became fast friends while working alongside each other doing marketing and branding for luxury resorts.

“We worked so well together, it almost felt like we shared a brain,” Sheen says.

In 2018, the duo left their corporate jobs and founded A+E Creative Co., a strategic branding and marketing company.

This August, they used their branding and design expertise to launch Desert Dweller Co., a contemporary accessories and apparel brand conceptualized under A+E Creative Co. to aid water conservation efforts.

The company (www.desertdwellerco.com) sells T-shirts, hats, water bottles, totes and candles in earth tones depicting modern cacti, elements of water, and dreamy script logos.

“We had the idea for a retail line celebrating the love of our home state and we’re into conscious living and sustainability,” Ptak says.

“Our premise with that is to directly contribute a portion of each sale to water conservation initiatives in Arizona,” Sheen adds, noting 10% of every purchase goes toward funding their cause.

The first project they will put proceeds toward is installing Source — formerly Zero Mass Water — hydropanels for families on the Navajo Nation, many of whom do not have access to water.

“The owner [of Source], who is from Gilbert and a professor at Arizona State University, created the technology,” Ptak says. “We loved the company’s connection to the state and thought it tied into an extension of our brand.”

The panels use sunlight to absorb water vapor from the air, even in dry climates, and can make up to 3 to 5 liters of water per day.

“We think this is an incredible opportunity to make an impact in an area of our state that needs water support, especially during this devastating pandemic,” Sheen says.

Through their merchandise and blog, Ptak and Sheen hope to inform consumers on eco-conscious practices. In addition to showcasing informative articles about their mission, their blog gives readers a behindthe-scenes look at their design process and features curated Spotify playlists.

Kelsey Guthrie’s passion project helps Valley moms find the right services to fit their families’ needs

Kelsey Guthrie has mastered the art of list-making and utilizes this skill in both her professional and personal life. Guthrie is an event planner by trade and recently celebrated 14 years as senior events project manager at Experience Scottsdale.

“I am a natural-born organizer, detail oriented and work best when I am multitasking,” she says. “Planning an event from start to finish and seeing it come together is very rewarding.”

Guthrie also works around the clock raising her children, Mary, 6, and Jack, 4. From maintaining her kids’ routines to chauffeuring them around and coordinating their play dates, this mom’s to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Fortunately, her event planner’s mind keeps her afloat. But not all moms possess the same organization chops, so Guthrie decided to help them out.

“Already the go-to for referrals in my mom group, I realized I could help other moms in a new way,” she says. “I started to think if I could find the experts we all need to keep our households going, serve it up in one spot and have the info sent directly to moms/parents, I could help moms be more efficient.”

She started her blog The MomSpot (www. themomspotaz.com) in 2019 as a passion project.

The MomSpot ships curated party boxes across the U.S. to help moms pull off their child’s themed celebration without a hitch. Guthrie’s blog also has a complimentary concierge service that sends information about Valley businesses and exclusive discounts directly to local moms’ inboxes.

Trent Hancock’s impeccable wardrobe is influenced by some of the biggest names in the music industry

Trent Hancock, former full-time musician-turned-head of marketing for Camelot Homes, mixes wardrobe basics like vintage T-shirts and jeans with luxurious touches, like structured custom hats from The Wise Hatter and Hugo Boss suits, to create his hipster chic style.

“I think having a background in music has totally influenced my style,” he says.

“I’m always looking to music and musicians for inspiration.

Just because Hancock draws inspiration from rock and roll legends like David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz, doesn’t mean his wardrobe is all ripped jeans and grungy tees.

“My favorite trends include form-fitting clothes in general, cuffed jeans with boots, custom-tailored suits, and shoes with no-show socks that show off the ankle,” he says.

Hancock’s go-to look includes jeans, a vintage T-shirt, a jean jacket, and his signature mismatched socks. The most essential part of his outfit? Boots.

“A great pair of boots is a must-have since they are the most versatile. They can be worn with a suit or jeans, or even jorts (jean shorts) if you’re going for that Joe Dirt look,” he says.

If you could trade closets with anyone who would it be? David Bowie probably has the most eclectic closet of all time.

What is your No. 1 style tip? Be yourself and be confident. Also, don’t be afraid to wear mismatched socks!

What is the most prized possession in your closet and why? I have a custom embroidered jean jacket that my buddy Kai Brown from All My Relations made, and it has the Figure 8 album cover from my favorite Elliot Smith album. It looks amazing and I love the fact that I was made by one of my best friends.

Arizona native Kim Azari works as a pharmacist during the day and looks forward to evenings and weekends to show off her classic style, which is chic but not too over the top.

“I have a bunch of stuff I bought right before the pandemic that I’m hoping is still in style when the world fully opens back up!” she says. In the meantime, leggings have become a staple in Azari’s closet.

When she’s not working, Azari draws inspiration from powerful women who appreciate classic styles.

“Besides Olivia Palermo and Sivan Ayla Richards, my mom has always influenced my style. My whole life she’s always been stylish and definitely someone I look up to,” she says.

Loving the high-waist trend, thanks to the flattering cut, Azari can often be found pairing high-waisted Levi’s jeans or shorts with a classic white T-shirt and fun belt. “A nice belt is a great item to have. It can take a plain outfit and make it chic and I love wearing white – it’s so classic,” Azari says.

Creator and activist Laura Madden shares her sustainability message through art and style

Laura Madden was a tried and true shopaholic – but that changed in 2015 when the former fitness professional and model saw a documentary on the realities of the clothing industry.

“I’ve been obsessed with fashion for as long as I can remember, all the while being curious and concerned about the environment,” Madden says. “This documentary, The True Cost, completely changed my life. I learned that fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world, marred with widespread social injustice. It led to a complete shift in my focus.”

When Madden began her first foray into secondhand clothing as a personal shopper at a Minneapolis thrift store, she was amazed by the pieces she found and realized she could make a positive impact on the planet without sacrificing style. Madden was inspired to not only make changes in her own shopping and lifestyle habits, but to encourage others to do the same through her work as a stylist, blogger, and advocate.

“Unfortunately, our environment is suffering, and mainstream fashion happens to be a large part of the problem – but it doesn’t have to be,” she says. “As consumers, all of us can be part of the solution, not the problem, even with the simple choices we make – how and where we purchase our clothes, how we take care of them, and how we dispose of them. Every dollar is a vote for more of what we want to see in the world.”

KNOWING YOURSELF

According to Remake, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that Madden works closely with, the U.S. alone sends around 21 billion pounds of textile waste to landfills annually, with only 10% to 15% of donated clothing ending up in the secondhand market.

“This is why I emphasize that knowing our true style is a paramount step to curating a more conscious closet,” Madden says.

“The fashion we wear should be looked at as a long-term relationship. When we prioritize only purchasing what we love, need, and will wear, we ultimately find that we need less because we’re fulfilled with the clothes we have.”

Madden began her journey with fashion early in life. “I have always been heavily influenced by aesthetics, but I believe that growing up with a weight problem for much of my childhood brought me to falling in love with the fantasy of fashion and it’s transformative powers,” Madden says. “The possibility that wearing something special could elevate how you felt about yourself is what grabbed me.”

After becoming a model at age 19, Madden, originally from Boston, received a degree in exercise science and kinesiology from the University of New Hampshire and began a rich and varied career, with a resume that includes life coaching and teaching classes in cooking, yoga, and aerobics.

Her wardrobe is heavy on classic prints and timeless black pieces in a variety of textures. Madden, who serves on the board of Arizona Costume Institute and recently joined the Arizona board of Fashion Group International (FGI Arizona), uses accessories like belts, jewelry, scarves, hats, and shoes to give new life to her favorite pieces, a technique she champions in her virtual consulting sessions, where she dives into her client’s wardrobe to help them identify their true style and restyle what they already own.

Along with this approach, Madden emphasizes the

importance of shopping secondhand instead of buying new clothing, the production of which often consumes large amounts of energy and resources while contributing to pollution.

“So much of my purpose in sharing what I wear on social media is to demonstrate that secondhand is not second best,” says Madden, who uses her platform to educate her followers about sustainable practices. Every November, she does a Nothing New November social media challenge (@iamlauramadden) to encourage people to become conscious consumers.

To find gems at the thrift store, Madden recommends putting on your blinders and only buying what fits your personal style, remembering that attitude can make or break an ensemble.

“Confidence will make any outfit look killer, whether it’s designer,

thrifted, or homemade,” she says. “It’s an inside-out approach that I’ve been practicing for a long time!”

While thrift stores are rife with trendy options and more brands focus on responsible and ethical manufacturing, Madden believes that continuing to buy in excess, which fuels the demand for faster and cheaper clothing options, does little to help the problem of consumption.

“As a maximalist when it comes to my wardrobe, I don’t like it either, but the bottom line is that we all need to buy less, love those clothes, and wear them as much as we can for as long as we can,” Madden says. “It’s ok to wear the same look twice – I’m notorious for it! I always tell people to restyle, repair, repurpose, rewear. Repeat, repeat, repeat.”

Last month, Madden received the 2020 Fashion Humanitarian Award from local nonprofit The Garment League for her activism work in the fashion world.

A CREATIVE AT HEART

Madden’s love of aesthetics also extends to the world of art. After exploring and practicing art for much of her life, Madden and her husband became especially interested in it early on in their 20-year marriage.

“What we choose to surround ourselves with is powerful,” Madden says. “Surrounding myself with things that are beautiful to me does a lot for my psyche. I even consider it a wellness tool, very much like my wardrobe.”

Instead of investing in art, Madden and her husband began making it themselves – and they got hooked. “I loved the pieces each of us were creating better than what I was finding on the market, and you can’t beat the price of DIY art! Every time we moved, I would make more art to decorate our new home. It was quicker, cheaper, and made me feel so fulfilled.”

After moving to Arizona for the second time two years ago, Madden was determined to fill the walls of their new home with her playful, abstract art until it resembled a gallery space, and in August of 2019, she created her own brand, ReFashioned Art. “All of my art is made using repurposed materials. I scour thrift stores, estate sales, and sometimes even my neighbor’s trash (there’s no shame in my game!) for items that are no longer seen as valuable and need a refresh,” says Madden, who recently built an art studio on her property. “I’m basically rescuing and repurposing other people’s discards. It’s a cliche, but my brand is built on this – one woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure.”

Madden’s work, which can be viewed and purchased both on her website (www.iamlauramadden.com) and on her business Instagram (@refashionedart), frequently features leftover house paint and other building materials to avoid the need for new purchases, all with the goal of lessening her impact on the environment.

To showcase the upcycled artwork in her home gallery, Madden dons her cocktail attire each week to host ReFashioned Art Live Art Shows on Instagram, offering exclusive deals on featured works. The live art tours – complete with cameos from Madden’s rescue dogs – are held on Monday and Friday, with previous shows available to watch on her website and YouTube channel.

“My life is hugely influenced by fashion and art, each affecting the other,” Madden says. “Some days, my fashion is my art, and some days my art is like an accent to my fashion, but both are an expression of my truest self.”

Through both of her endeavors, Madden wishes to show others that living a sustainable lifestyle can be not only fun, exciting, and cutting-edge, but purpose-driven.

“Above all else, I hope people feel uplifted and empowered by my content. Aside from the glamour that I hope will entice people to consider sustainable practices, I hope they grasp the urgency of jumping on board with this movement,” Madden says. “It’s time we all pay attention to what’s happening with our environment – we can do that and still balance style and beauty.”

In 2014, Baze founded Artful Giving (www.artful-giving.com), and has since spent thousands of hours creating murals, paintings, and notecards for local nonprofits, with sales of the latter benefiting notMYkid, UMOM, First Place AZ, and more.

She also hosts a spring festival for pediatric cancer patients at her studio in partnership with Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels.

“Artful Giving opened doors to an entirely different world where the reward for my work wasn’t represented by a paycheck, but by the art I created and the joy that came from helping others,” Baze says.

But after Baze’s father, George Keown, passed away in 2018, she felt trapped by her grief. “My dad was my mentor, my friend, and my hero,” she says. “‘Keep your chin up, kid,’ was his favorite thing to say to my siblings and me anytime we faced adversity. A year after he passed away, I heard his words, and it was at that moment I knew what I needed to do.”

By that evening, Baze had created nonprofit GK Legacy Foundation (www. gklegacyfoundation.org) and the Keep Your Chin Up Scholarship Fund, which grants funding for books and tuition to Arizona residents age 25 and over. Since its inception, Baze and her family have awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to adults achieving their dream of higher education.

“Adults face so many obstacles when going back to school. We want to help lighten that load,” Baze says. “My dad strongly believed in perseverance and overcoming obstacles. He was the greatest man I knew, and now his legacy will continue to live on in others. It doesn’t get more rewarding than that.”

Bridget Pettis Founder, Project Roots AZ As a former player and coach for the WNBA, Bridget Pettis relied on good nutrition to help her do her best on the court.

But growing up in east Chicago taught her that for many, access to healthy food is a luxury.

“All too often, the most vulnerable among us are left to eat junk or go hungry,” says Pettis, whose WNBA career began in 1997 when she was drafted in the first round by the Phoenix Mercury. “From this awareness, I was inspired to not only grow my own food, but to teach others how to grow.”

Through founding Project Roots AZ (www.projectrootsaz.org), Pettis aims to address the lack of nutritious foods in urban areas while promoting a healthier and more sustainable way of life.

In its first year, the nonprofit has established two community gardens, located in South and Central Phoenix, which allow youth and families to learn about healthy choices through various educational outreach programs. The nonprofit also aids the homeless population by providing hygiene items, clothing, and shelter as well as distributing cooked meals through a mobile soup kitchen.

To support these initiatives, Project Roots AZ sells fruits and vegetables in seasonal produce bags (with free delivery to Scottsdale and Phoenix residents), at Uptown Farmers Market, and through a garden box program that equips growers to establish a flourishing home garden.

For Pettis, taking time off the court for the season was a necessary step in expanding Project Roots AZ. This summer, after a professional career of over 20 years, Pettis stepped down from her role as an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky to focus on eliminating food deserts and increasing the accessibility of healthy foods – a decision she calls a “growmotion.”

“I want to give my time to educate my community,” Pettis says. “I’m going to keep getting my hands dirty and acquire more farmland that will allow us to reach out to those in need.”

Eric and Jen Weinbrenner Co-founders, Paint For A Cure On the day before Thanksgiving in 2019, Eric Weinbrenner received a diagnosis that changed his life – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare neurodegenerative disease that currently has no cure.

“I’ve always been a go-go-go person with a passion for family and business,” Eric says. “Rather than sit back and do nothing, I formed Paint For A Cure to help others diagnosed with ALS that need financial support.”

Paint For A Cure (www.paintforacure. org) advocates for treatments and therapies while providing medically accessible housing and monetary assistance for those with ALS. Since January 2020, the organization has raised over $125,000 for young families through donations and art auctions.

Eric and his wife of four years, Jen, applied their backgrounds in real estate to Paint For A Cure’s home building initiative.

As Eric’s partner in both life and business, Jen saw this endeavor as a natural next step for the couple and their two young children.

“Our nonprofit is such a key part of who I am at my core,” Jen says. “We appreciate the patients, caregivers, and families that realize the importance of being there for their loved ones with ALS. We want to be part of that extended support.”

Paint For A Cure helps others through the power of painting, which Eric views as a form of therapy. “After I was diagnosed, rather than going to my in-laws’ for a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, I painted,” he says.

“When I’m in the zone, it’s amazing how my mind clears as I concentrate on the piece I’m working on.”

Paint For A Cure’s first event, complete with an art auction, live entertainment, and a fundraising goal of $150,000, is scheduled for March 2021.

“Seeing a young child cry because they’re watching their mom or dad lose their life over this disease is heartbreaking,” Jen says. “We want to ensure families can spend time together with less worries about paying a mortgage as they battle this diagnosis.”

Raquel McNabb Executive director and co-founder, Caris Sports Foundation As a former collegiate athlete, Raquel McNabb knows firsthand the countless benefits of participating in sports. During her time on the women’s basketball team at Syracuse University, McNabb was named MVP twice over in addition to earning the Athlete of the Year distinction in 1997.

“I’ve always felt sports are a microcosm of life,” McNabb says. “As a young athlete, you face conflict on the playing field. Athletes learn how to navigate difficult situations, align themselves with team goals, challenge their comfort zones, and respond to failure.”

McNabb and her husband, former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb, encouraged their four children to play sports from a young age. But as her children progressed to club level sports, she learned that for some families, the cost of participating – which can include equipment, uniforms, team fees, and travel expenses – often keeps kids off the team. Through her research, she discovered that a family’s income level has a direct effect on their child’s participation in sports.

This inequity inspired her to help athletes of all economic backgrounds experience the physical, social, and emotional growth fostered by athletics. From that goal of leveling the playing field for financially disadvantaged children, Caris Sports Foundation (www.carissportsfoundation. org) was born.

The recently established organization combats economic disparities by providing monetary support to local K-12 athletes.

Arizona families struggling to meet the costs associated with recreational and competitive sports can apply for financial aid for their children on the foundation’s website.

“Sports open doors, and a family’s financial situation shouldn’t dictate a child’s ability to play,” McNabb says. “There’s nothing like being at a game and watching the athletes on the field, even if the kids are 4 years old, picking daisies in the outfield. That kid could grow into a Hall of Fame outfielder one day, but we’ll never know if he or she never has a chance to get on the field.”

Bob and Katie Tipton Founder/president and co-founder/vice president, Beanies On Brains Bob Tipton turned a near-fatal brain injury into a chance to give back.

As a third-generation ironworker in Chicago, Bob fell 30 feet onto concrete in 2010 when the metal deck beneath him collapsed. He was hospitalized with broken ribs, facial fractures, a shattered wrist, and a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

But Bob understood that his experience – including a two-week coma, six months of brain rehab, and five years of recovery in his parents’ home – wasn’t the end of his life, but a chance to begin anew.

“After meeting other TBI survivors, I knew I was extremely lucky to have the recovery I did. My doctor encouraged me to visit survivors and their families so they could see me, learn about my recovery, and have hope,” Bob says. “I want to show others that life after TBI is possible.”

Named after the comforting headwear he was known to sport in the hospital, Bob founded Beanies On Brains to promote brain injury awareness and connect TBI survivors. As a professional dancerturned-yoga instructor, Bob’s wife and co-founder of Beanies On Brains (www. beaniesonbrains.org) Katie Tipton holds the organization’s annual ballroom dance and yoga fundraising events close to her heart.

Though Bob’s injury occurred just two days after their first date, Katie knew they had something worth fighting for. The couple moved to Arizona in 2016 in pursuit of a fresh start, marrying and founding their nonprofit in 2017 and welcoming their first daughter the year after.

“Watching Bob throughout his recovery, I realized the power of his story and the work we could do to help others,” says Katie, who learned firsthand that preparing for a brain injury is impossible. “Families and survivors often have no way to find people who understand what they’re going through.”

It’s Bob’s mission to change that, and to reassure TBI survivors that no injury can change your soul. “Recovery never stops,” he says. “We must surround ourselves with a good support system, embrace the new beginning, and never give up.”

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West recently reopened to the public, debuting a new experience. Though some things may be changing in the world, there’s one thing that remains the same: At this year’s annual Canal Convergence, attendees will still enjoy the large-scale, light-based art installations that have come to define the Scottsdale Public Art event. However, the event will still be taking precautions to ensure the public health and safety of everyone present.

“The key is safety, distancing and viewing things at a level that is comfortable for visitors,” says Kim Boganey, director of Scottsdale Public Art. To achieve this goal, local, national and international artists will display their artwork at locations around Old Town Scottsdale instead of solely along the Arizona Canal at Scottsdale Waterfront to

minimize crowding. One of those artists will be Ryan Edwards of Boston-based MASARY Studios. Joined by his friends and colleagues, Sam “Samo” OkerstromLang and Jeremy “Dr. J” Stewart, Edwards and his team will be presenting Massively Distributed, a community-driven art expression.

“We have had so much fun developing the artwork we are coming to share, and while that is satisfying in its own right, it is really all about releasing it into the wild and being there to observe the interactions by the public,” Edwards says.

Some in-person events will go virtual this year, like live-streamed musical performances and artist workshops, which will be accessible on Zoom, and augmented reality

experiences. By scanning a QR Code near a work of art, visitors can learn more about the installation from the artist on their tablet or smartphone – think Pokemon Go, but for art.

There will also be two augmented reality artworks on-site, including Magnified Mundane Magnificent by local artist Jen Urso. Her artwork reveals a world of complexity through a series of drawings of organic matter.

“The use of augmented reality was a concept explored to provide safe ways to view artworks in this time of COVID-19, but we believe it may become a permanent feature of Canal Convergence and public art in Scottsdale moving forward,” Boganey says.

Fall in Scottsdale wouldn’t be the same without the outdoor events that have come to define the season. As such, Kierland POP will return this month for a fourth year, in the form of a two-day festival as well as a 5K Fun Run/Walk.

“This annual experiential outdoor community event gives an opportunity to engage with local artisans, musicians, and performers in a unique setting and offers up the opportunity to kick off the holiday season, which so many of us are looking forward to,” says Victoria Buscher, senior marketing manager of Kierland Commons.

Complete with social distancing and increased sanitation, the fully outdoor celebration will be presented by the Kierland Master Association and a collaboration between Kierland Commons, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) and Adventure Fitness. The event will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of patrons.

The weekend will kick off on Nov. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 5K run and walk around The Westin Kierland Golf Club to benefit local breast cancer nonprofit Don’t Be a Chump! Check for a Lump! The race will be limited to 150 attendees and social distancing will be enforced at the start line and throughout.

“We will have sanitizing stations throughout the resort and at the race beginning/end, there is a separate beginning/end location for participants to ensure no crossover, and masks are required all throughout the property, though do not have to be worn while on the 5K course,” Buscher says.

This year, the festival portion will be two days as opposed to the oneday festival in previous years to ensure distancing.

The word “craft” is used a lot these days.

There is craft beer, craft cocktails, craft food…and the list goes on. The word itself is derived from craeft in Old English and essentially means strength and skilling in planning, making and executing something.

“At our restaurant, we certainly use it [craft] to describe our approach to food and drink, but we added the word to our name in homage to more the Old English usage, and to honor one man,” says Letty Ebel, co-owner of The Craftsman Cocktails and Kitchen at Hayden Peak Crossing.

“My husband Jason’s grandfather Victor Ebel was a hardworking and skilled farmer and woodworker who loved his family, the land and working skillfully with his hands.”

When Victor passed, Ebel’s family put “craftsman” on his headstone.

“His memory inspires everything we do at The Craftsman, from our ‘come as you are’ attitude to our use of farm fresh ingredients and even our design, which – of course – has thoughtful touches of wood throughout,” Ebel says.

using locally sourced ingredients. The kitchen is headed by chef Christopher Nicosia, an Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame inductee and the former executive chef of Sassi restaurant.

“Our approach to the menu is to pair quality with creativity,” says Nicosia, whose menu highlights include a housemade lamb belly sausage flatbread, a beet caprese salad with farro, wood oven roasted desert branzino, and more.

Adding to the uniqueness of the restaurant, select entrees and desserts are infused with in-house distilled spirits and craft beers.

“We feature our own line of distilled spirits, including vodka, gin, rum, barrel-aged amaro, bourbon, and coffee liqueur,” says Nicosia, noting bottles of The Craftsman Distillers spirits are available for sampling at the 6,357-square-foot venue, as well as to purchase and take home.

In addition to spirit sampling, the smallbatch liquors and liqueurs are used as the base ingredients in most of The Craftsman’s signature cocktails.

Beyond the food and drink, the overall look of the space is meant to evoke the spirit of Victor, with hand-carved wood, stone, soft leathers and greenery. Rugged finishes and rustic textures are sprinkled in as well.

To adhere with COVID-19 safety and health guidelines, the tables are currently spread out throughout the large space for social distancing and outdoor dining is available. In addition, the restaurant has large garage windows that are kept open whenever weather permits.

Bronze artist Jason Napier’s work will take center stage at this month’s Hidden in the Hills studio tour

Self-taught acclaimed artist Jason Napier has been creating for nearly three decades, and best known for his lifelike bronze animal sculptures showcasing a trademark style patina.

Along with his wife Danielle Napier, who runs the business side of things, Jason recently moved to Scottsdale full-time after previously splitting time between the Valley and Washington.

The couple first met in high school and have been inseparable ever since. “Danielle and I have been together since we were 15 years old,” Jason says. “We fell in love at first sight. There is no me without Danielle. She’s there every step of the way.”

Danielle was even by Jason’s side when he became an artist and honed his craft. While in her late teens, Danielle was working at a fine art gallery in Portland, Oregon, that had a bronze casting foundry located underneath. Jason started working at the foundry to help pay for college – and to be closer to Danielle. Soon, he learned bronze casting and fell in love with the process.

“Throughout these stages, we would melt down cold heavy ingots of bronze, and at the end this cold metal eventually turned into something that felt like it was breathing life and had all these warm colors,” says Jason, explaining how he would assist other artists in creating. “To me, it was really inspiring.”

He became skilled at and increasingly inspired by utilizing acid to create patinas on bronze, eventually taking the step to make his own art pieces. The gallery owner upstairs put Jason’s sculptures up for sale and they started selling. The couple opened Napier Sculpture Gallery in Washington in 1996, eventually spending winters in Arizona.

Jason’s sculptures depict all types of animals, including horses, eagles, fish, dolphins, deer, dogs, and giraffe, among others.

“I was born an animal lover,” he says. “I was fortunate enough to have a family that let me have pets. That was important to me.”

Jason’s wildlife sculptures allow him to tell stories to others through his art. One example of this is Weedeater, a whimsical bronze jackrabbit inspired by a hike he took with Danielle. The sculpture was chosen among more than 100 pieces of fine art entries submitted for consideration to grace the cover of this year’s Hidden in the Hills (www.hiddeninthehills.org) studio tour artist directory.

This is the first time the pair will participate in the event, which is a self-guided art tour taking place Nov. 20 to 22 and Nov. 27 to 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 24th annual event will feature more than 139 artists at 35 private artists’ studios throughout the Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale.

Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

WHY WE NEED TO FOCUS ON POLITE DRIVING NOW MORE THAN EVER

ROADWAY ETIQUETTE IS IMPORTANT EVERY DAY, but especially now that stressed-out pandemic drivers are behind the wheel. Shahe Koulloukian of Mazvo Auto Care Center shares his best practices for being a polite driver.

There is no question that the pandemic has had a dramatic impact on our driving habits, with the number of trips we take and miles we drive along with changes in driving behaviors. Personal mobility is now emotional mobility.

Every day we hear epidemiologists advocating that we practice “social distancing” as way of slowing down the spread of the virus. Social isolation is what driving is all about. You are rolling down the road in an isolation box, essentially removed from the world. One can’t help but enjoy a moment of safe, blissful solitude.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has thrown every aspect of our lives for a loop — and that includes not only our driving habits, but our driving etiquette too. Under normal conditions we know how to focus on road rules and engage sensibly (most of the time). Now, behaviors of aggressive speeding and braking are normal, along with higher speed car crashes.

Let’s start to recognize, and understand, the subtle art of controlling our emotional driving habits. Will it be easy?

Maybe not so much. But being a good driver isn’t just a matter of following the rules of the road; it’s being polite as well.

Here are a few steps to improve your

etiquette on the road.

CONTROL YOUR TEMPER. Sure, it’s easier said than done — but aggressive, angry driving is a leading cause of car crashes.

If you flip out, pull over, take some deep breaths and put some chill music and ask yourself if your reaction is worth it.

Try and remember to be empathetic and reflect on why the other person may be angry. Avoid road rage at all costs, and practice patience and compassion.

BE THANKFUL. Expressing gratitude is as important on the road as it is elsewhere.

If you’re granted a pass to merge, give a hand wave or nod. If they were kind enough to let you go first, then you can be kind enough to convey your thanks with a gesture or smile. These tiny yet impactful moments can completely change someone’s attitude. You never know: your smile or thanks can make someone whose own temper may be simmering feel a little better, and be a better driver in turn.

HONK WITH RESPECT. Remember that your horn is a communication tool, not a stick for you to scold someone with. It’s crucial to know how to use it properly. It’s so unfortunate that over 48% of the U.S. drivers honk to display being annoyed or angry. Remember to recognize what happened first. Your horn is to be used to alert others of danger or prevent a crash, not because they mouthed vulgarities at you.

STAY BACK. In our current pandemic times, we’re growing accustomed to

giving other ample personal space when we are on foot. Yet, when we’re in our vehicles, we seem to have a power trip and start tailgating, forcing others to drive uncomfortably. Let’s understand that tailgating is leading cause of rearend crashes. Leave room between you and the other vehicle to give you enough reaction time in case something unexpected happens — especially during fog or inclement weather.

CHANGE LANES PROPERLY. Remember that little flashing thingy called a turn signal? Use it! When on the highway, the left lane should be reserved for passing; once you’ve overtaken the slower vehicle, make sure to move back to the right in heavy traffic. Avoid constant lane changing, which is all an illusion that you will get to your destination faster. You won’t!

LAY OFF THE BRAKES. There is no reason to stop in the roadway unless absolutely needed. Slowing down and rubbernecking to watch a crash, or gawk at someone being pulled over, is disrespectful and impolite. (Besides, either scenario could happen to you!) It just creates a huge traffic jam and is bad for your brakes with all the stop and go — you can’t complain about your brakes squeaking if you do this, because that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

Our lives may be in a period of upheaval, but if we all do our part to practice good etiquette on the road, maybe a drive could be our way to de-stress rather than having the opposite effect.

2021 VOLVO XC90 RECHARGE Volvo’s flagship SUV delivers luxury, class and efficiency

The XC90 Recharge (last year’s T8) is an all-wheel drive luxury SUV with seating for six or seven. The Inscription Expression variation, tested here, includes a 400-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that’s both supercharged and turbocharged, plus an 87-horsepower electric motor in back, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A full charge allows for 18 EPA-rated miles of electric-only driving, topping out at 78 mph before hybrid mode engages. While testing, the car averaged at 29 mpg equivalent in more than 500 miles of mixed driving.

SMOKEY SENSATION

Mezcal Carreño’s award-winning flavor is rooted in family and friendship

While working at a Valley Circuit City in 2003, Mexico-born, Arizona-raised Ivan Carreño and third-generation Arizona native Abel Arriaga became best friends.

“Though always Arizona proud, we both have significant Mexican heritage, a point of pride for us,” Carreño says.

In 1904, Carreño’s great-grandfather Don Apolonio Carreño planted the seeds (literally) for both of the young men’s futures in San Dionisio Ocotlan, a small central valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, when he grew wild agave on sugar cane fields. After harvesting the agave, he used handcrafted methods to make and bottle his own mezcal, which was soon named in his honor as Mezcal Carreño. For many years, the fruits of his family’s labor were strictly enjoyed in their community as mezcal had not caught on in popularity in the rest of the world. According to Carreño, in fact, Apolonio Carreño himself only sipped it on special occasions three times a year: his birthday, the start of the planting season and the end of the harvest.

“In 2010 as mezcal began earning more notice outside of Mexico, my aunt Lorena went through the process of certifying our family’s mezcal with the Mexican Regulatory Council of the Quality of Mezcal, and it wasn’t until 2018 when Abel and I brought it to Arizona that we realized the market for it,” Carreño says. “We sold our first bottle in February 2019, and it changed our lives forever.”

Today, there are five unique varieties of Mezcal Carreño: Espadín, which takes six to eight years to mature and is the most traditional in flavor; Tobalá, which takes 10 to 15 years to mature and has a sweet, delicate floral flavor; Tepeztate, which takes at least 25 years to mature and features full-bodied and earthy characteristics; Tobasiche, which takes 12 to 14 years to mature and boasts rich earth tones with a sweet papaya finish; and Ensamble 7, a unique blend of seven wild agave varietals to represent the seven Carreño sisters. The resulting taste of Ensamble 7 is complex yet delicate, with light notes of pineapple.

“This past February, just prior to the onset of COVID-19, we entered each of our varieties in the San Francisco World Spirits competition, which is more or less the Oscars or Grammys of spirit competition,” Carreño says. “Not only did all five of our expressions earn silver, gold or double gold medals; we took home the coveted Best Mezcal award for Ensamble 7.”

In total, nearly 3,000 spirits were entered into the competition, and Mezcal Carreño was the only overall best in class honoree from Arizona.

COLD-BREW COCKTAIL The Boozy Breakfast offers a tipsy take on coffee with The Dude

The Boozy Breakfast, open since August, is the first restaurant on High Street to serve breakfast and brunch seven days a week. The menu boasts morning classics and Southwestern takes on the most important meal of the day.

“Given our name, we also have an extensive menu of a.m.-inspired cocktails,” says Clark Mitchel Penney, assistant general manager of The Boozy Breakfast.

“Certainly, the more standard offers of bloody marys and several riffs on mimosas are on the menu, but we also offer a line of signature options for guests looking for a little something different.”

Among Penney’s favorite signature sippers is The Dude ($12).

“I developed this in homage to Jeff Daniels’ iconic character in The Big Lebowski, simply named The Dude. It is a twist on a White Russian; The Dude’s favorite cocktail in the film.” Penney says.

As with a traditional White Russian, this recipe calls for vodka (Penney uses Deep Eddy), Kahlua coffee liqueur and halfand-half.

“Our twist is the addition of nitro coldbrew coffee, which is made with actual nitrogen to give it a foamy head,” says Penney, noting each ingredient is layered into an Irish coffee glass with ice and gently stirred versus being built in a shaker.

To accentuate the creaminess from the half-and-half and cold brew as well as to balance the coffee flavor, The Dude is topped with sweet whipped cream. It’s also sprinkled with cinnamon and garnished with three espresso beans.

“You’ve likely seen this three-bean garnishment before,” Penney says. “The trio of beans represents health, wealth and happiness, which is our wish for all guests, especially now.”

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Brian Bieganski of Kasai Japanese Steakhouse

Brian Bieganski is a teppanyaki chef at Kasai Japanese Steakhouse, providing dinner using high-grade steak and seafood as his chief ingredients while also putting on a show as he cooks live in front of guests on a 5-foot iron griddle.

Tell us about Kasai’s recent renovation.

We refreshed our interior decor and reconfigured the space itself to open the floor plan.

We also added four hoodless iron griddle – or teppanyaki – tables, which are the first in the Valley, to complement the 10 traditional teppanyaki tables we have at the restaurant.

How do you describe the teppanyaki experience?

It is a Japanese style of dining wherein an iron griddle is used to cook the food versus a grill, oven or stove. For many, teppanyaki cooking is done at a massive showpiece of a griddle that doubles as a table. It makes for an interactive dining experience on top of being delicious.

How did you get into the cooking style?

I started as a fan. Growing up in the Valley, our family loved Ayako of Tokyo (formerly) at the Biltmore Fashion Park. Fast forward to 2009, I earned my first culinary big break at Benihana in Scottsdale, where I trained to cook on the iron griddle before moving over to Sapporo in 2010. And though I left the griddle to hone my skills at Tonto Bar & Grill, Binkley’s, Zinc Bistro and even the Scottsdale Airport for a spell, I got back into it when I joined Kasai in 2018.

What are your favorite menu items to cook right now?

Right now I would have to go with our wagyu filet mignon or the sea bass dinner, each served with a shrimp starter, mushroom soup, house salad, fried rice, seasonal vegetables and a Dole Whip Hawaiian pineapple frozen dessert.

Tell us something surprising about you.

I am a professionally trained musician. After graduating from Chaparral High School in 2007, I studied at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Any other hidden talents?

I make my own dog food for my two pups, Chuck and Lola.
