MEET DR. SAEED, MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA OUTPATIENT CARE CENTERS Different from other cancer treatment centers, Cancer Treatment Centers of America Outpatient Care Center in Scottsdale strives to provide the Mother Standard of care—treating patients as their own loved ones. As Medical Director, Dr. Saima Saeed understands that each patient has a name and a face, as well as their own personal history. “We realize that we are not only treating their cancer, we are treating the whole person. Our goal is to provide quality, whole person upto-date cancer care, while ensuring the patient feels heard, empowered, and is treated in a caring and dignified manner.” Before joining CTCA, Dr. Saeed was in private practice for 12 years, and also served as section chief of Hematology and Oncology at a large local hospital. These experiences provided her with the insight into what it takes to run an outpatient clinic. “It has helped me realize what it is that I want to do differently now that I am with CTCA, which is to spend more time with patients, listening to their questions.” Dr. Saeed believes that, in addition to medicine, other factors play a role in patient cancer care, including exercise, eating nutritious whole foods, managing stress levels, and quality of sleep. “I believe that if you are going to take care of others you must take care of yourself,” she explains, striving herself to exercise, meditate, and follow a healthy diet. The Outpatient Care Center in Scottsdale opened in March of 2018 as an outpatient facility, aiming to provide more accessible cancer options for patients in the Valley. “For me, it is a true honor and privilege to be able to care for cancer patients. I am proud to be a part of this amazing team of caregivers in Scottsdale,” says Dr. Saeed. Cancer Treatment Centers of America Outpatient Care Center in Scottsdale is located 9755 N. 90th St. A-100 & B -130, Scottsdale. To schedule an appointment, please call 877.341.9929, or visit www.cancercenter.com/ phoenix.

It’s hard to believe it’s already July, though our hot temperatures have only begun! Should you find yourself hanging at home, rather than escaping to cooler climes, we’ve got you covered with plenty of ways to help you keep your cool and make the most of this month. Despite being in the desert, frozen fun abounds from an ice bar to a cold plunge pool to a showstopping chilled seafood tower (page 56). Keep the icy adventures going with Scottsdale’s most innovative frozen cocktails (page 86) and beauty products designed to chill (page 62). Of course, resorts offer a welcome reprieve from the heat and your daily grind. Check out our picks of Scottsdale’s top suites to snag at a steal this summer (page 54), how you can enjoy resort pools and spas for the day (page 44), and W Scottsdale’s brand-new Penthouse Suites (page 44). Prefer to bring the party to your own pool? Discover decor for your next backyard bash (page 64) – and some tropical looks to don yourself (page 70). For those eager to escape this time of year, consider a luxury lodge on Lake Tahoe (page 83) or a closer-tohome restaurant road trip to Verde Valley (page 90). On a personal note, I am very excited about our cover girl this month – Lindsey Schwartz, the founder of the Powerhouse Women event and community, an author, the host of a podcast, a former fitness competitor, a wellness entrepreneur, a mentor to so many women, and overall, the living definition of a powerhouse woman. Lindsey and I actually go back about five years; we first met before either of us was doing what we do now. It’s been inspiring to watch her journey unfold over the years, and I’m proud to say “I knew her when.” Now, you – our readers – can get to know her too, on page 36. Paige Lund takes the reigns as the first female leader of JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn

There are defining moments in all of our lives, moments that help shape who we are and who we will be. For Paige Lund, who grew up in a small Minnesota town called Mound with a population of less than 10,000, there were several defining moments that helped set her on the path to

making Arizona history. “When I was 13, I took a job at the Country Kitchen in the middle of town,” Lund says. “From the day I walked in the door, I knew hospitality was my fate.” Lund fell in love with hosting guests, turning strangers into So Scottsdale! July ‘19

Pulse UP CLOSE friends over service and the fast pace of the kitchen. “I decided by high school in the late 1980s that I would one day run my own restaurant,” says Lund, who began researching college restaurant programs while in high school. “I settled on Northern Arizona University (NAU) as it had the small-town feel and familiar weather of my hometown, but with the world-class School of Hotel and Restaurant Management.” Lund’s second defining moment would also take place in high school. “At just 40, my mother retired from the workforce to dedicate her life to volunteerism with Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) in Minnesota,” Lund says. “CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children during court proceedings and in other settings so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes.” Inspired by her mother’s dedication, in addition to diving into her studies once at NAU, Lund joined Gamma Phi Beta, whose philanthropic mission is to provide experiences and resources that build resiliency in girls. While there, Lund would also meet her now-husband of 25 years, Clark Lund. “In 1993, as I prepared to graduate and get married, I set my sights on a role with Old Spaghetti Factory, which had been recruiting me for some time,” Lund says. “But, in an effort to practice my interview skills, I met with one last company first.” That company was Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. “This sounds funny now, but when the recruiter noted all the restaurants I would be able to manage and even wholly run if I chose to go the hotel career route, I was dumbfounded. Yes, even though I was in the hotel and restaurant program, it never occurred to me to even explore the hotel side of the coin,” says Lund, noting this turned out to be a third defining moment in her life.

Shifting Gears From that day forward, Lund would make the hotel and resort industry her career. “I started with Wyndham in 1993, taking a position as a food and beverage manager in development back in Minnesota, though Arizona is where Clark – a native of Lake Havasu City – and I longed to put down roots long-term,” says Lund, who would also work for the brand in Illinois and Georgia before earning a position at The Ritz-Carlton Phoenix in 1998. The next 20-plus years would fly by, with Lund serving in various leadership roles at a laundry list of Arizona’s top resorts including The Ritz-Carlton, Boulders Resort & Spa, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, The Wigwam and Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel, among others. Along the way she would also welcome two daughters – Allyson Faith, now 15, and Abigayle Grace, now 13. “During this time I also continued following in my mother’s footsteps as it relates to servant leadership,” Lund says. She began volunteering with various organizations such as Grace & Mercy Foundation, Washington Elementary School District, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. She also joined the board of

directors for HopeKids Arizona, an organization that brings hope to children with life threatening diseases. Lund also took on several leadership roles within the Arizona hospitality and tourism sectors. Today, she is a member of the board of directors for the Arizona Lodging & Tourism Association, an advisory board member for City of Phoenix Tourism and Hospitality, and a member of the national advisory board for the NAU School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. “I’ve worked hard, but would be remiss if I didn’t note that none of this would be possible without my dedicated husband, who himself is busy helping develop a church in Desert Ridge. We clearly both like to take on big opportunities,” Lund says. Speaking of big opportunities, what’s next for Lund? “Recently, I made the decision to join the iconic JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa as its first-ever female general manager,” says Lund, who took on the role at the historic resort beloved and often-visited by Mr. Marriott himself as it completed a series of multimillion-dollar renovations to public areas and event spaces. Over the next two years, Lund will lead the resort as it undergoes additional enhancements, including facelifts to the guest rooms, the spa, and various other areas throughout the property. “Our mission is to honor the history of the property while helping usher it into the 21st century with state-of-the-art enhancements and thoughtful upgrades,” Lund says. “I’m honored to work with an amazing team and look forward to raising the bar even higher for this iconic property while still maintaining its Southwestern charm and heritage.”

Celebrating 8 Years in Scottsdale Rodney Gentry, Top Hair Color Expert

Rodney Gentry is not only a color connoisseur, but also an expert with fine hair. His charm and zeal, in part, are why his clients adore him and refuse to settle for anyone else. Simply put, many of them do not trust anyone but Rodney with their hair. Keeping an open mind is how Rodney maintains his long list of loyal clients. “I keep communication open between a client and myself. I listen to people and what they have to say; their concerns or struggles with their hair. I think listening has turned into a lost art, but it’s something I do naturally,” he says. Based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, Rodney says he is happier than ever, having experienced many successes in Scottsdale over the past eight years. After a biking accident, Rodney moved to the Valley from Chicago, where he had owned and operated a studio. “I wanted a better, dryer climate. The humidity and cold of Chicago no longer held appeal for me.” Here, he opened a very successful studio, but running it took time away

from his true passion: coloring and styling. “I found myself reevaluating life and what was most important to me. I got back to my roots and back to what I love to do.” Rodney’s true joy and expertise is color. He specializes in creating a natural look that highlights the features of a client’s face and their complexion. By considering the history and condition of the hair, he provides each and every client with a unique experience catered to the individual. Rodney focuses on the needs of their hair, nurturing it back to full health, and providing a style that can be easily cared for at home. Rodney stays on the cutting edge of new and current trends. He is extremely knowledgeable with styling products, and almost exclusively uses Goldwell styling and color products. Enzymebased rather than peroxide-based, Goldwell color products nurture the hair at the same time as giving it a remarkably vibrant color. Along with color, Rodney performs wonders for fine hair to add volume and texture. His clients are amazed at

how different their hair looks after a color treatment. When talking with a client, he can recommend highlights or lowlights to achieve the desired texture and volume. Simple drying techniques can also make a big difference for those with fine hair. Part of why clients rave about Rodney is that he shows them how to achieve the same styled looks outside of the salon. “It’s important to live authentically and to do what you love. I’m happy where I’m at because I’m able to meet really great people and provide personalized care for each,” Rodney says.

Lindsay Cohen travels near and far for brides, blush and braids

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Lindsay Cohen is in the business of making unicorns, and she is willing to travel to do it. “I was in my first wedding 15 years ago,” Cohen says. “That one, and every one since, have had the same problems: hair and makeup needs, and often issues.” According to Cohen, the most common issues brides have are finding enough space to host their wedding party, missing or forgotten products and – of course – unsatisfied brides who have to rush off to get to the venue for wedding photos. Enter Cohen’s first business: All Done Up by Lindsay. With mobile hair and makeup that travels to brides and their squads, Cohen takes the glam-related stress and logistical maneuvering off the bride’s already full plate altogether. “I’ve even made my way outside of town – as far as New York and Mexico – to help brides in extreme style-related circumstances,” Cohen says. In recent years, her business has also evolved into primping both women and men for other special events, and then in 2018 it evolved in a much bigger way. “I was inspired by photos of what some might call ‘unicorn hair’ on Instagram,” Cohen says. “I’d already done every braid and updo under the sun for over a decade, so adding glitter and color to achieve this whimsical style was a snap.” Enter Cohen’s second business: All Done Up for Kids. “Over the past year, I have partnered with shops, resorts and boutiques and even traveled to kids’ birthday parties using my unicorn technique to transform girls’ hair into something out of their wildest dreams,” says Cohen, who also offers adults “braid bar” classes using mannequins to help teach parents, especially dads, how to do basic and wild styles on their own children. Once Cohen began posting images from both the unicorn hair events and braid bars, a third business emerged: All Done Up for You. “It turns out that women want unicorn hair and braids as much as the girls,” Cohen says. So today, in addition to her other offerings, Cohen even has adult braid bars and a mobile “unicorn unit” for adults prepping for music festivals, pool parties and more.

Michael W. Obenauf finds fulfillment in leading others in the rink, into retirement and into college

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

While playing youth hockey in his native Illinois, Michael W. Obenauf’s teammates voted him “most likely to be a coach” one day. “At the time, I dreamt of playing in the NHL and laughed off that title,” says Obenauf, who eventually realized that his passion for the sport outweighed his skill, and that the NHL was more of a pipedream than a legitimate career track. With the NHL out, Obenauf moved to the Valley in 2011 to study business at Arizona State University. And though he would move back to the Midwest to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee, Obenauf eventually chose Scottsdale as his permanent home, laying down his roots and beginning a career in financial services in 2016. “My approach is to coach clients and educate them. I talk to them, not at them,” says Obenauf, who is now an investment advisor representative at Scottsdale’s Wilde Wealth Management Group. But that is not the only coaching Obenauf is doing. “Last year, I began coaching youth hockey at the Ice Den,” Obenauf says. “The first time I stepped onto the rink, I could hear my former teammates shouting ‘I told you so’ in my head.” Beyond work and hockey, Obenauf has also been busy with a passion project over the past several years. “I paid for the lion’s share of my education, which was excruciatingly difficult,” Obenauf says. “So, I set out to launch a nonprofit to help enterprising young people gain access to scholarships and grants, thereby easing their financial burden.” But, as his career took off and he began dedicating more personal time to coaching hockey, Obenauf had to pivot his philanthropic plans. “Through friends, I leaned about the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club,” Obenauf says. “Already established and with over 30 years of giving under its belt, the organization raises critical funds for Valley youth and gives members a chance to take part in hands-on activities to mentor and – dare I say it – coach kids toward goals.” Obenauf was formally accepted into the organization in May, making him a coach three times over. “Looking back, I can’t believe a group of my 12-year-old teammates knew me better than I knew myself,” Obenauf says.

Angelo Rea has perfected the art of “farm chic” looks for work and play

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Angelo Rea, an apprentice master blender at Queen Creek Olive Mill, divides his wardrobe into work and play. As part of the family that owns and runs Queen Creek Olive Mill, Rea finds himself dressing simple yet professional as a face of the brand. “On the weekends, I’ll rock floral shirts, black jeans and a denim jacket. My work look is definitely more refined and professional – some like to call it ‘farm chic!’” he says. Olive oil isn’t the only thing Rea is pioneering in Arizona. He also likes to be the first to try new styles. “I love making a statement,” he says. “Bright colors and bold patterns are my go-to.” Besides being a frequent shopper at Bonobos thanks to their comfortable, classic and sophisticated staples, his favorite place for online shopping is Nordstrom Rack. The most prized fashion element in Rea’s closet? His Hawaiian shirt collection, which he has been curating for years. When it comes to living in the desert, Rea says fairly stable weather makes his fashion choices much easier. His best fashion advice is to be comfortable and be yourself, and for the stylish olive oil expert, sometimes that means wearing a pair of Thursday boots every day of the week.

What would someone say if they looked in your closet? “Why do you have so many boots?” What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? Well-fitted pants – 7 For All Mankind on the weekend and Bonobos during the week. Do you consider yourself a trendsetter? I guess I’ve never really thought about it. My friends constantly copy my outfits so, yes, maybe I am!

As a mom of three, Zenobia Mertel celebrates others and life in style

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

As a contributor and columnist for Inspired Media 360, Zenobia Mertel covers life and style around the Valley, which gives her an upper hand when it comes to current fashion and trends. Mertel has a feminine edge behind her personal style and is influenced by forward-thinking interior designers found in magazines like Architectural Digest thanks to their affinity for textures, color and luxury fabrics. Following in the footsteps of icons such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Olivia Culpo and Caroline Daur, Mertel prefers to wear pieces by designers like Retrofete, Prabal Gurung and Temperley London. Always one to evolve in her fashion sense, Mertel’s must-have closet staple is a thin, well-cut black turtleneck because it is sophisticated and easy to dress up or down. “I have paired mine with ballgown-style skirts, skinny jeans or short silk shorts,” she says. “A fabulous pair of sunnies usually tops off my look!” Although Mertel’s career helps drive her style, she shares, “Since I cover lifestyle-centric topics, I tend to be influenced by design and pretty looks. I also enjoy dressing in a way that inspires people to push the boundaries of their own personal style.”

What is your No. 1 fashion tip? Dress for your shape and what makes you feel beautiful, and err on the side of sophisticated versus trendy. How do you transition from work to nighttime? For events, a statement heel or boot and faux fur (if in season) usually does it for me. I love wearing a top knot and a clutch for the evening, too! How does living in Arizona influence your style? It’s so casual in AZ! I like to keep it interesting by mixing casual and dressier looks (like layering) if it’s not too hot, favoring maxi dresses, wedges and classy rompers in the summer.

So Scottsdale! July ‘19

Authentic, creative and passionate, Lindsey Schwartz embodies what it means to be a powerhouse woman. An author, speaker and the founder of the Powerhouse Women movement, Schwartz has fostered a community of collaboration born out of the desire to motivate other women to ditch their self-doubt and go after their big ideas. Like many women, Schwartz started out feeling like she lacked a clear connection to her purpose. Originally from the Midwest, she moved to Arizona in 2007 for her first “real job” – selling commercial carpet as a manufacturer’s representative for a flooring company. “There’s really no way to make that sound more glamorous than it is!” Schwartz says. As the recession hit the commercial construction industry, Schwartz became aware of the importance of having a backup plan and started a wellness business, her first foray into entrepreneurship, in order to pad her savings account. Schwartz quickly found that working in the personal development space was unsurprisingly more rewarding than selling flooring. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘no one has ever told me I changed their life by selling them carpet.’ Heck, I didn’t know if I ever even heard a thank you!” Schwartz says. “It felt so fulfilling to know I was making an actual difference in people’s lives, and I knew that was how I wanted to feel for the rest of my life.” After five years with her wellness business, Schwartz began to notice that numerous women in her life were stopping short of chasing their own entrepreneurial dreams, trapped by fear or self-doubt. “I saw the need for more honest conversations about the ups and downs of what it really looks like to pursue big ideas in order to show women that they don’t need to have it all together to get started,” Schwartz says. It was from this realization that the Powerhouse Women community was born. Today, Schwartz prides herself on sharing the stories of women who – just like her – have overcome their insecurities and limiting beliefs to achieve success, whatever that may look like for them. For Schwartz, motivating ambitious, purpose-driven women to accomplish their goals is all about transparency. “I’ve always been most inspired by people who have

not only achieved success but are willing to share just as much about their struggles as they do their highlight reel of wins,” Schwartz says. “The more I saw that the people I admired from afar experienced the same fears and insecurities that I felt on a daily basis, the more it gave me permission to move forward in spite of my self-doubt. I want to do the same thing for other women.”

Fiercely Female

Schwartz is no stranger to passionately pursuing her goals time and time again. Years ago, after finding herself admiring the strong women on the covers of her favorite fitness magazines and thinking she could never be like them, she asked herself one simple but transformative question: “Wait … why not me?” Those four little words sent her on a journey of self-discovery as Schwartz hired a coach and learned what was needed to become a successful fitness competitor. “It taught me that I’m fully capable of reinventing myself at any moment I choose if I’m willing to put in the work and learn the

skills and mindset necessary to become the woman I want to become,” Schwartz shares. This philosophy followed Schwartz as her career continued to evolve. Her book, Powerhouse Woman: How to get out of your own way, fulfill your unique purpose, and live a powerful life, was a work in progress for years as she dealt with fears of judgement and criticism. “I am not a writer,” Schwartz shares. “I had a health and fitness blog for over three years and published one new article per year – yes, there were exactly three articles on this blog and I’m pretty sure my mom was the only person who read them! Committing to writing a whole book – and then actually keeping that promise to myself – was the most transformational experience of my life.” Her book, published in 2017 and inspired by her “why not me” mentality, has evolved into a larger movement than Schwartz could have predicted. Now, her annual Powerhouse Women event draws a national crowd of those who are also looking for the encouragement and inspiration to pursue their big ideas. The event gathers like-minded women for a day of genuine connection, support and real-world advice designed to propel the tentative into action. In her constant quest to get out of her comfort zone, Schwartz recently launched the Powerhouse Women Podcast (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify), which shares even more real stories about women who are chasing after their dreams. On the horizon for her are new programs based around the experiences that have had the biggest impacts on her journey. “I’m leaning into collaboration more than ever before, so a lot of my upcoming projects are also giving me the opportunity to link arms with other successful women that I adore, and I’m loving it!” Schwartz says. “As women, we’re most successful when we collaborate, share resources and genuinely root for each other to win,” Schwartz says. “I believe that women are designed to create, and that when women get into action around their big ideas, the world works better. We’re not meant to do business – or life – alone!” Powerhouse Women 2019 will be held on Sept. 7 at The Clayton House in Scottsdale. To learn more and purchase tickets, visit www.powerhousewomen.co.

A Realtor To Go The Distance Lindsay Rusk

Lindsay Rusk is a licensed real estate agent specializing in buying and selling homes in Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix area. Lindsay deeply cares about her clients and wants to ensure they enjoy the process of selling or buying a home. She puts their needs first, showing as many homes as needed to find the perfect fit, while understanding that patience is key. “Every day is different, which is probably what I love the most! I get to be the driving force of helping people make one of the biggest purchases of their lives. I think that’s pretty special,” Lindsay says. As a Realtor, Lindsay’s priority is to be an intermediary for her clients, handling issues before they arise. In this way, she alleviates the bad stresses that can arise when purchasing or selling a home, while keeping the process fun for her clients. “Too many agents don’t realize how stressful and sometimes scary this process can be for people so I think when you let them enjoy the process

to the fullest, it makes the transaction a lasting memory.” Previously, Lindsay worked in the interior design field, but did not feel challenged. With the support of her dad, a broker for over 40 years, she decided to follow in his footsteps to join the family tradition. In the next year she hopes to obtain her Broker’s license. “The process of buying and selling a home is something I truly enjoy. I get to meet and spend time with great people, who often become friends,” she says. When she is not working hard to make her clients’ dreams come true, Lindsay stays active with running, biking, and swimming. She is a two-time Ironman Finisher and Boston Qualifier, among others. “This sport has taught me how strong I am. I feel that pushing myself to do hard things has elevated my levels of both learning how to problem solve and keeping a positive attitude and a winning spirit.” Lindsay also volunteers within her

local race community, and has personally raced alongside two kids to complete their first triathlon at a local school program. In addition, she raises money for an animal rescue group located in Rocky Point, Mexico. With the motto to “always do the right thing,” Lindsay is both fierce and thoughtful in negotiations for her clients. Her high standards of integrity, combined with spitfire energy and a strong passion for real estate, allows Lindsay to skillfully guide clients through the entire process. “Having successful transactions and happy clients makes my heart sing, but so does being a good person. Being honest in both business and personal dealings, along with being a good friend, wife, and family member are just as important to me in feeling like I am doing life ‘right.’” Lindsay’s photo was taken at Vinum 55 in Scottsdale Hanger One. There’s no better time to find your perfect summertime wine than at Mountain Shadows’ Spirited Sipping Seminar for just that. On Saturday, July 20, this monthly event at the resort’s culinary epicenter, Hearth ’61, will focus on rosé in its Rosé All Day class. During the event, learning and libations will be facilitated by Jim Gallen, Mountain Shadows’ food and beverage manager (and resident wine expert!). You’ll learn a bit of history paired with plenty of samples and have extra time to linger with your newfound knowledge – and, perhaps, a glass (or two) of your favorite rosé. The seminar, which is complimentary for overnight guests and $30 for non-resort guests, begins at 3 p.m. and lasts 30 to 45 minutes. www.mountainshadows.com.

DANCE IN THE DESERT

Jazz things up at a wellness retreat hosted by Dancing with the Stars’ Lindsay Arnold

BY MANDY HOLMES

If you’ve ever dreamed of dancing with a champion from ABC’s hit show Dancing with the Stars, now is your chance. From July 25 to 28, Dancing with the Stars season 25 winner Lindsay Arnold is bringing the dance-floor to the desert at CIVANA resort during her Dance the Weekend Away retreat, which is organized by Retreats Unlimited. Arnold is currently in her 13th season as a professional dancer on the popular competition series and has made it to the finals with her celebrity partners a total of four times since joining the cast. She won the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy in 2017 with Hamilton sensation Jordan Fisher and is looking to spend a little bit of down time gearing up for next season with her fans in Scottsdale. “I’m so excited to be able to relax poolside with everyone, laugh, dance, and do some truly ‘hot yoga’ in Arizona outside in the mornings!” she says. Throughout the dance-filled weekend, Arnold will lead attendees in choreographed dance routines and cardio fitness. As a believer in mindfulness, there will be interactive activities including journaling and workshops, where Arnold will give special insight into her fitness regimens and connect with her guests on a personal level. Beyond dancing, Arnold is passionate about supporting other women. “I was raised by amazing parents who made sure that my three sisters and myself are not the kind of women who will ever put others down, but will lift them up instead. Being the oldest, I have always had a great opportunity to lead by example,” she says. Tickets include a four-day, threenight stay at CIVANA in Carefree and all meals and beverages (excluding alcohol and snacks), as well as a 75-minute

spa treatment and a take-home gift bag designed by the dancing queen herself. Besides helping attendees learn new moves and increase body confidence, Arnold will focus on healthy mindsets and a new approach to fitness while providing a surplus of fun. “This weekend is about coming together to let go of insecurities, learn to move your body, give yourself some personal time, and more than anything, have fun and laugh,” she says. “No matter if you have two left feet, love dancing to your favorite song in your bedroom, or can have a dance-off in the club and win, this weekend is for everyone! Just bring a good attitude and a smile. I’ll take care of the rest!”

THE “SUITEST” THING

Stunning Scottsdale resort suites to soak up this summer Locals know summer is the best time to take advantage of resort staycation deals Valleywide. But few know that it is also the best time to upgrade one’s stay from a traditional room to a swanky, super-sized VIP suite. Enter some of the most stunning and spacious options in Scottsdale.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort Framed by Camelback and Mummy mountains, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort features 40 acres of flowering gardens, Spanish-inspired architecture, and rooms that are more akin to mini palaces. In fact, their “suites” are full-sized homes. Its most exclusive – the 3,100-squarefoot Presidential Suite – is two stories and features two bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, a dry sauna, a full kitchen, a formal dining room with seating for 10 people, a wet bar, a library, and a living room with a baby grand piano and fireplace. www.scottsdaleplaza.com. The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician The two 1,800-square-foot Presidential Suites at The Canyon Suites were updated in recent years, along with the entire boutique hotel that is nestled on The Phoenician’s iconic property. The interior of each suite features a marble dining table for 10, a full kitchen, a master suite with a sitting area, and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi, plus the option to add on a second bedroom. Beyond that, each has a massive, amenity-rich private terrace with a full-sized gas fire pit, plush seating for 12, surround sound, fans and a flat-screen TV. www.canyonsuites.com. JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa Famous for being among Mr. Marriott’s favorite places to vacation, the resort’s 1,500-squarefoot Jackrabbit Suite boasts a full butler’s kitchen, a wet bar, a massive master bedroom, surround sound, and additional guest sleeping quarters and office space. It also happens to have a full backyard overlooking Camelback Mountain and its own full-size private pool in addition to being walking distance to the private spa pool nearby. Here’s the inside scoop: The suite will be getting a series of upgrades later this summer to add even more amenities for guests. www.camelbackinn.com. Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North The Four Seasons’ Sedona Suite boasts two full bedrooms and more than 2,000 square feet of living space. It has three connecting patios, two outdoor garden showers, outdoor and indoor fireplaces, and a private telescope for stargazing. It also has direct access to one of the most picturesque desert walking paths in Arizona and a dramatic view of nearby Pinnacle Peak. A bonus wow-factor feature is the private outdoor plunge pool flanked by a dramatic boulder formation. www.fourseasonsscottsdale.com. The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch In recent years, each of the resort’s 325 rooms and suites underwent a multimillion-dollar makeover. The most impressive facelift included the updates and upgrades to the hotel’s three Presidential Suites on property. Each now has 1,375 square feet of space for entertaining with beautiful views of the championship golf course as well as deep soaking tubs, a formal dining room, an office area, and a full-sized connecting master suite. www.thescottsdaleresort.com.

PUTTING PEN TO PAPER

Local author Katrina Shawver shares the evolution of bringing a Holocaust survivor’s story to life

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT

Katrina Shawver, author of Henry: A Polish Swimmer’s True Story of Friendship from Auschwitz to America, is curious by nature, but did not initially set out to write a book. Without ever taking a college journalism class, Shawver landed a job with The Arizona Republic after writing a letter to the editor in response to a story published by the newspaper. She stayed with the newspaper for more than 11 years and wrote hundreds of columns, including a short piece on Henry Zguda, a champion swimmer who was imprisoned for three years in Auschwitz and Buchenwald as a Polish political prisoner. “After that initial interview for the newspaper, I knew there was a bigger story. Henry made such an impression on me in a short time, and I became friends with him,” Shawver says. “You don’t spend so much time writing someone else’s story unless you like the person.” Shawver says that meeting Henry was a gift from the universe and something that was meant to happen. She met with him twice a week for six months, recording his stories. Henry and his wife, Nancy, did not have any close relatives to share these stories with and if it were not for Shawver, they might have been lost forever. “Henry was one of a kind. I was simply the messenger,” she says. Henry passed away in 2003, a year after they met. But it was not until 2010 that Shawver began to write his story in earnest. After transcribing his recorded interviews, she focused on compiling one story at a time. Through many years of research, she was able to verify 95 percent of Henry’s stories of his camp experiences, exactly as he told them. In 2014, she experienced an aha moment when she located numerous documents with the International Tracing Service on Henry’s experiences at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. “Curiosity makes a good writer. You have to dig for the facts below what people tell you at face value,” says Shawver, also sharing some sage advice for aspiring writers: To simply to sit down and write. “Writing is hard work. It’s like going to the gym. Give yourself permission to write badly, and keep going. Edits come later.” Shawver is working on her next book while continuing to write on her blog and for her monthly newsletter. She also teaches writing workshops and does speaking engagements at libraries, book festivals, book clubs, social organizations, and bookstores. Her book, Henry, can be purchased at various bookstores around the Valley, including both locations of Changing Hands. Henry is also available at local libraries and through the Arizona Talking Book Library community. This month, Shawver will be at Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek on Aug. 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for an author talk and book signing. To learn more, visit www.katrinashawver.com.

Luxe WHEELS

2019 CADILLAC XT4

This all-new subcompact SUV is a winning addition to the American maker’s portfolio BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: 2019 Cadillac XT4 Base price: $34,795

With the Escalade, Cadillac has had one of the best-known luxury SUVs on the market. But, lacking other utility-vehicle options, its portfolio was far from complete – until recently. The mid-sized XT5 crossover arrived in 2017, and 2019 saw the debut of the much-needed subcompact XT4 crossover. The XT4 comes in three trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport. The only performance advantage of the Sport, which was tested here, is optional active sport suspension, making it mostly an appearance package. Each trim is powered by an all-new 2.0-liter, 237-horsepower, twin-scrolled, turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. The turbocharger spools up quickly, providing immediate low-end punch without the turbo lag common in competing vehicles. The high-speed power available for overtaking and passing slower traffic is impressive. However, the engine gets buzzy under full acceleration. The XT4 seats five on standard faux leather upholstery. With an upgrade to real leather comes an eight-way power passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and

a hands-free rear liftgate. Passenger comfort is excellent in both the front and rear, where legroom is surprisingly ample. There’s a decent amount of cargo space behind the second row of seats, and more when the seats are folded flat. An 8-inch infotainment display is tastefully showcased in the contoured dash. The redesigned optional Cadillac User Experience (CUE) operating technology – with embedded navigation, Bose audio system surround sound, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is one of the most pleasant surprises. It’s vastly improved over the previous, generally disliked CUE system. The downside is the readability of the small buttons on the center console. The XT4’s reasonable starting price quickly soars when adding options like cold weather and technology packages, dual panel tilt, a sliding sunroof, and dark blue metallic exterior paint. Desirable active safety features will cost extra as well. Overall, the XT4 is more than just a downsized XT5 – it has excellent design presence, is enjoyable to drive, easy to maneuver and park, and especially comfortable. If this is the future of Cadillac, the brand is certainly moving in the right direction.

ESCAPE TO EDGEWOOD Serenity awaits at Lake Tahoe’s most luxurious lodge BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Imagine smooth-as-glass, crystal blue water that is bordered by icecapped mountains (yes, often in the summer) and towering, forest green pine trees as far as the eye can see. Now, stop imagining. Heaven on Earth like this not only exists, but has its own sandy beach, luxurious spa and private beachside pool. This haven is The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, both the 2019 Preferred Hotels & Resorts Hotel of the Year and the 2018 Travel + Leisure Top Resort Hotel in the United States. Located in South Lake Tahoe just steps from Heavenly Mountain and Heavenly Village, Edgewood Tahoe opened to international fanfare in 2017. A combination of casual comforts and classic refinement, the 235-acre, LEEDcertified lakefront resort – with the area’s only private beach – boasts 154 luxury guest rooms and suites, an 18-hole championship golf course, a spa, a salon, three acclaimed restaurants, stone fire pits, a coffee bar, and more. Each room has an in-room gas fireplace, a terrace or balcony, a flatscreen TV, plush bedding, and a rainfall shower. Plus, a stay grants you

access to the year-round heated lakeside pool, wellness activities including meditation and yoga, nightly s’mores, a state-of-the-art workout facility, and Mercedes-Benz shuttles. For elevated luxury, look no further than the 1,000-square-foot Edgewood Suites or the 1,500-square-foot Edgewood Presidential Suite. Each Edgewood Suite offers plenty of room to spread out and relax, complete with cozy leather couches and an expanded bathroom. The jaw-dropping Presidential Suite goes a step further with a full formal dining room, floor-to-ceiling views of the lake, and a balcony so large and well-appointed (complete with an indoor-outdoor fireplace, couches and lounge chairs) that it could easily accommodate a family reunion, a girls’ trip, or a bachelor(ette) party. Just steps away are a selection of on-property places to drink and dine: The Bistro, Edgewood Restaurant and Brooks’ Bar & Deck. Each a wholly different experience, The Bistro offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a view, not to mention expertly crafted cocktails and a sommelier-curated wine list, while Edgewood encompasses destination dining for dinner. And while open all day, Brooks’ Bar & Deck is the go-to spot post-golf or for a generous happy hour. Speaking of golf, Edgewood Tahoe’s historic 18-hole course was designed by PGA legend George Fazio and originally opened in the 1960s. It has been named several times over as among Golf Digest's top golf courses and offers a choice of four sets of tees, ranging in length from 5,343 yards to a demanding 7,529 – providing a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. And then, of course, there is The Spa at Edgewood. The 8,500-square-foot space takes up nearly the entire second floor of the resort and is inspired by the natural beauty and serenity of the area. Insider’s tip: enhance your service with hyperbaric oxygen, native gems, crystals or stones. For more information and to book your stay, visit www.edgewoodtahoe.com.

Luxe PLACES

ONLY IN AUSTIN

Texas’ capital balances big-city attractions with small-town charm

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF VISIT AUSTIN

“Keep Austin Weird” has been the unofficial slogan of Austin, Texas, for nearly 20 years. However, given its impressive arts, culture, culinary, outdoor and music scenes, the motto could just as well be “Austin Keeps Wowing.” In fact, there is so much to do one that would be hardpressed to fit it all into just one visit – but you can try!

Austin’s Accommodations One must, of course, start with accommodations. There’s no shortage of hotels and resorts in the area. Before booking, consider the type of trip you’re organizing. If planning to spend most of your time downtown, book a hotel in the thick of everything that’s awash in amenities like the Hilton Austin, which offers views of both the state Capitol and Lady Bird Lake. It is also walking distance to the famed 6th Street and features a full-service spa and two award-winning eateries. If you’re seeking something away from the bustle of the city when you’re not exploring, consider Wayback Cafe & Cottages. Just outside of town, each of the eight cottages at this boutique hotel overlooks the Hill Country and offers access to a private saltwater pool with cabanas, a fire pit, and a farm-to-table cafe.

Tool Around Town Once checked in and bags unpacked, look around. It’s beautiful! Austin is just not full of amazing city architecture – it sits on Lady Bird Lake. Beyond its beauty, this reservoir running through Austin offers several recreational activities, including one of its chief attractions: the bats. Every March to October, Austin becomes the home to 1.5 million wild bats. And each night, they emerge from under Congress Avenue Bridge and sail over Lady Bird Lake. Several operators, notably Live Love Paddle and Capital Cruises, offer kayaking and small boat cruises during “bat season” to see the flyover firsthand. Beyond that, there are canoe rentals, paddleboarding classes, hiking paths, and bike tours. Rocket Electrics is a leader in biking options and even features rides with stops for cocktails and brunch. And if seeking to take a dip any time of the year, visit Barton Springs Pool in nearby Zilker Park, which measures 3 acres in size and is fed from underground springs with an average temperature of 68 to 70 degrees. In addition to Lady Bird and Barton Springs, Austin is also home to Deep Eddy Vodka’s world headquarters and offers daily tastings. If more in the mood for beer, try the Family Business Beer Company. Like Wayback, this microbrewery is just outside of town but worth the drive. During summer, expect infusions of grapefruit, pineapple and citrus in their impressive lagers, IPAs and ales.

Food & Fun There’s no doubt that Austin is a culinary and cocktail mecca. First, there are the food trucks – more than 1,000 of them! There are several apps available to seek them out, but there are also dozens of pods throughout town where different trucks gather to provide a twist on a progressive dining experience. Among the best: Pangea Lounge, Rainey Street Food Trucks, East Riverside Food Trucks, and The Picnic. For non-truck dining, options range from traditional Texas barbecue with craft beer to tacos and tequila (or mezcal) to Asianfusion and high-end chef’s tables. ATX Cocina is a great stop for Mexican food lovers, and it has a local Arizona connection as one of the co-owners is Nick Foles, the former University of Arizona quarterback who rose to fame when he was named the 2018 NFL Superbowl MVP. Among the other owners is his father, Larry Foles, the man behind Roaring Fork, Salty Sow and Eddie V’s. For a standout Asian option, look no further than Sour Duck Market. In recent months, the eatery’s chef, Bryce Gilmore, was in the running for the James Beard Award for the Southwest. Though edged out by Scottsdale’s Charleen Badman of FnB, his food is a feast for all five senses. Or, for a bit of a twist on Asian flavors – as well as traditional Texas barbecue – head to Loro, which is helmed by James Beard Award-winners Tyson Cole and Aaron Franklin. Speaking of barbecue, you cannot visit Texas without tasting some of its world-renowned options. Kerlin BBQ is a great place to start. Recently named the top barbecue spot in America by Business Insider, this husband-and-wife run restaurant excels at all things brisket and ribs. Then, of course, there is the ultra-popular Franklin Barbecue, headed by James Beard Award winner James Franklin. Fine dining also abounds across Austin at venues such as Wink Restaurant & Wine Bar, which offers a daily chef’s tasting menu, available in five or seven courses and with optional wine pairings, as well as a daily vegetarian tasting menu.

Entertainment Abounds And then – of course – there is the music. Austin has more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the nation, and most of them are on or near an area of town called 6th Street. One would be hard-pressed not to find several dozen live music acts performing nightly. And beyond even the music, 6th Street offers a host of other things to see and do, notably a haunted hotel (The Driskell), breweries, theaters, restaurants, galleries, clubs and more. A hidden gem: Esther’s Follies. The ever-changing comedy show skewers all political parties and news of the day through a quirky, clever combination of sketch comedy and original songs. ICE-COLD

Frozen cocktails to help you keep your cool PHOTO BY J. MARTIN HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Undoubtedly, you’ll need to chill out this summer, so here are some of our favorite frozen cocktails around town to help you keep your cool – no matter how hot it gets.

Passion Mango Martini Kasai Asian Grill This slushy stunner starts with Bacardi Citrus Rum, Absolut Citron Vodka, fresh ginger, and passion fruit and mango juices. It’s topped with a heavy pour of raspberry liqueur for a hit of spirited sweetness to complement the fruit. $12. www.kasaiscottsdale.com. The Sully Morning Squeeze A sparkling summer slushy, The Sully is blended with Svedka Vodka and fresh mango juice, then topped with a float of sparkling wine. Think of it as a twist on a classic mimosa, but with the hot Arizona summer in mind. $10. www.morningsqueeze.com. The Matador Hand Cut Burgers + Chophouse This fan favorite starts with a combination of Pueblo Viejo Blanco Tequila and pineapple and lime juices. The contents are poured over freshly shaved ice, and then topped with flavor-enhancing cinnamon as garnish. $13. www.handcutchophouse.com. Sub Zero Whiskey ‘n’ Coke Bourbon & Bones Bourbon & Bones takes bourbon and Coca-Cola, then transforms them into a slushy. Though great on its own, opt to add either Madagascar vanilla bean syrup or cherry syrup ($2 more) for an explosively tasty Vanilla Coke or Cherry Coke variation. $14. www.bourbonandbonesaz.com. Slushed Brandy Raven Gastropub Founder Brian Vogel based this cocktail on a long-loved family recipe, and it uses ingredients from his family’s home. From its decadent menu offerings to its sophisticated ambiance, Mastro’s Steakhouse is the definition of upscale elegance. A nearly unparalleled seafood dining experience in the Valley, Mastro’s features specially sourced and brilliantly plated options including chilled shellfish, oysters Rockefeller, sauteed scallops, ahi tuna, sea bass and – of course – lobster. A guest favorite is chef Rob Klink’s Twin Lobster Tails ($68). These cold-water lobsters are flown in fresh several times a week from eastern Canada and weigh between 7 and 8 ounces. Each shell is cracked open down the center so the meat can be butterflied. Then, they are seasoned with whole butter and paprika before being baked. INSPIRED INFUSION

Blue Clover Distillery’s Blood Orange Martini features its housemade vodka

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Blue Clover Distillery’s cocktail program is different than most. “Many of our cocktails are made with spirits we distill ourselves,” says Lynda Gurnsey, a mixologist at Blue Clover. “We distill our own vodka and gin, so other than a few tequila and whiskey options, our menu predominantly focuses on showcasing those.” To do so, beyond traditional cocktail offerings available, Blue Clover offers “infusions.” “To make, we take our vodka or gin from the still when it is about 160-proof and infuse it with the zest of fresh fruits, whole fruits or even peppers,” Gurnsey says. These infusions sit in specially made buckets for up to a week and are then cut down with filtrated water that has gone through reverse osmosis until it’s transformed into a servable, 80-proof spirit packed with flavor. The vodka is currently offered in five infusions (lemon, grapefruit, chili pepper, strawberry and blood orange) while the gin is offered in three infusions (apple berry, sour cherry pineapple and orange). While available on the rocks or with club soda ($7), Gurnsey recommends that guests try infusions in a martini ($10). “Our Blood Orange Martini is a favorite,” Gurnsey says. “It is made by combining our blood orange infusion in a shaker with lemon juice and hit of agave syrup.” “The contents are then shaken and strained into a coupe glass, often with a little blood orange pulp to add vibrant color, and garnished with a blood orange or two as well,” Gurnsey says. The result is bright with refreshing citrus and just a touch of sweetness. Blue Clover Distillery, 7042 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale; 480.946.1062; www.bluecloverdistillery.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

In the kitchen with Michael Siggins of Pasta Brioni and NPX: A Neighborhood Joint

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Michael Siggins is the executive chef and owner of Pasta Brioni, where he specializes in traditional Italian cuisine, as well as NPX: A Neighborhood Joint, where he delivers twists on American classics.

So, you almost went the NASA route instead of the pasta-making one? After graduating from Chaparral High School in 1999, I began studying aerospace engineering at The University of Arizona. But throughout high school and into college, I worked at Macaroni Grill, first in Scottsdale and then in Tucson. In 2000, I was named the youngest executive chef in the history of the company and left school to pursue it full time. But you didn’t stay in the culinary world, or Tucson? In 2002, I enrolled at Arizona State University to study business, exhausted from 90-hour work weeks in the kitchen. To help with tuition, I also worked full time as Starfire Golf Club’s executive chef. When I graduated in 2004, I opened my own accounting firm, focused on assisting restaurants with their finances, while pursuing graduate school. How did you transition back into the kitchen? My first client was Pasta Brioni, and I bought a small share of the company in 2006. It was then that I slowly started finding myself cooking for them. By 2013, I purchased Pasta Brioni and jumped back into the kitchen for good. Tell us how you’ve evolved Pasta Brioni since taking over. Aesthetically, we’ve done a total face-lift with one big project every summer. Menu-wise, we started making all of our own pasta, stuffing our own ravioli, and now change our menu seasonally as well. And how did you come to open NPX? I have always had several restaurant concepts in my mind, one of which is a sports bar with family-friendly touches. When I saw the space, it lent itself perfectly to my vision. So, in 2018, NPX was born. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I am an aspiring Olympic curler. Our fourman team won the U.S. Club National Championships earlier this year! Pasta Brioni, www.pastabrioni.com; NPX: A Neighborhood Joint, www.npx.life.

End NEW IN TOWN

PASSING THE TIKI TORCH Drunk Munk opens in iconic Scottsdale locale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY J. MARTIN HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

After 21 years, Scottsdale mainstay Cowboy Ciao closed late last year. “As longtime area business owners, we knew immediately we wanted to help bring something special to that space,” says Greg Donnally, co-owner of nearby Geisha A Go Go. Enter Drunk Munk Tiki Bar + Restaurant. The 4,600-square-foot Polynesianthemed restaurant – for which Donnally serves as co-owner along with Andrew Nam, who is also executive chef – is inspired by what they call “the island life.” “We developed the menu as well as the cocktail program and all of the decor as homage to the islands of the South Pacific, the beaches of Hawaii, and the surf culture of Mexico,” Donnally says. According to Donnally, the restaurant is also meant to bring back memories of another former Old Town Scottsdale hot spot: Drift Lounge. “Drift Lounge was a staple in the Scottsdale dining and nightlife scene for a decade before it closed in 2012,” Donnally says. “With a blend of the old and new, Drunk Munk revives the Tiki culture look and feel of Drift with a midcentury modern twist.”

Upon entering, expect vibrant reds, a wood-laced ceiling meant to give the feel of entering a hut, a massive “Tiki god” statue behind the bar, and several other Tikiinspired totem poles throughout. “Once you walk in and take in the surroundings, our culinary program is meant to kick the island vibe into overdrive with dishes one would expect on vacation,” Donnally says, noting the menu includes flaming pu pu platters, coconut shrimp, sushi rolls and Korean short ribs. Among their most popular dishes is the Big Island Loco Moco. “Loco moco is a Hawaiian comfort food featuring white rice, a hamburger patty, a fried egg and homemade gravy,” Donnally says. “Ours pays respect to the classic preparation, but we also add some leeks for texture and give guests the option to substitute short rib or pulled pork in the dish.” A perfect complement to the decor and the dishes is the massive cocktail list, all with distinct Tiki flair. “We have two dozen classic Tiki cocktails ranging from mojitos to mai tais as well as seven frozen drinks and three sharable options we call our ‘Party People’ cocktails,” Donnally says. The Party People Grotto cocktail, for example, is $10 per person and served in a big, shell-shaped porcelain bowl with straws. Bursting with tropical flavor, it features rum, Blue Curacao, fresh orange, pineapple, and lemon and lime juices. Happy hour is daily from 4 to 7 p.m. with discounts on food and drink. Weekend brunch is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with island-infused twists on breakfast standards. Drunk Munk is open Monday through Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Thursday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. Drunk Munk Tiki Bar + Restaurant, 7133 E.
