THINKING OF LEAVING YOUR GOLD & SILVER COINS TO YOUR HEIRS? 1
I have a collectIon of rare coIns and precIous metals. I am plannIng to leave them to my heIrs. Is thIs a good Idea? A: I hear this often from my clients.
There are several reasons they give me for wanting to do this. 1. They don’t want to deal with the coins and feel the heirs are getting them for free and can deal with these investments when the time comes. 2. Many investors own rare coins they have losses in and they don’t feel like taking the loss. 3. Other clients simply state that leaving gold or silver to their loved ones is a smart way to transfer wealth. I deal with heirs who end up with coins they know little about, so I see both sides of this issue. Leaving rare coins to an heir, who is not interested can be overwhelming. Usually the person who bought the coins is better equipped to handle the transaction rather than leaving the heir to figure out. Many heirs simply want to turn the coins or precious metals into cash and don’t know how to get the most money for them. I suggest talking to your heir(s) and asking what they would prefer.
I bought my precIous metals and coIns as protectIon agaInst a devaluIng dollar and I Want to pass them along for that reason. What Is the best Way to do that? A: If you wish to leave precious
metals or coins to your heirs I recommend making it simple for them. Leave Bullion bars or Bullion coins such as US Gold Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs or a variety of coins that trade based solely on their precious metal content is a great choice. This makes it easy for the heirs to value and sell the items if they wish and they are not burdened by trying to figure out collector values.
What do I do If I already oWn rare or semI rare coIns? A: You can trade them for bullion
items or just cash out. Rare coins can be mind boggling for someone who knows little about them. If they sell to a pawn shop or dealer who knows they are not knowledgeable, they may get much less than what the coins are worth. his month’s cover story on Vanessa Ruiz was quite serendipitous. When we confirmed her for the cover, it was just days before the announcement of her transition from an anchor at 12 News to a professor at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. When I heard the news, I was even more thrilled to share her story because, as a former journalism student myself, I know first hand – as many of us do – the profound difference a professor can make. I had one such journalism professor during my time at University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!), and I am forever grateful for his generosity and influence. Ruiz’s new role will undoubtedly encourage and shape so many students’ lives, and that’s exactly why she’s doing it. Read about her broadcast journey and what’s in store for her next chapter, starting on page 40. On a different note, it goes without saying that it’s H-O-T, hot! ngela Christensen has always been a positive, glass half-full type of girl – a belief that her parents instilled in her and one she has carried throughout her life. In 2005, she married Colby Christensen and was later blessed with a perfect little boy and then girl. When they found out they were pregnant again, they were thrilled.

up close Once her third child was born, Christensen felt like she had the whole world in the palms of her hands. One day, her eight-day-old daughter lay snoozing and her two other children were playing outside. Life seemed sweet. Feeling euphoric, she buzzed around the house picking up toys and wiping down counters. Then the phone rang, and Christensen heard the news that would shatter the next year of her life. Little baby Callie’s blood work had indications of cystic fibrosis. Upon hearing the news, Christensen collapsed to the floor. “I would describe the first year as solid darkness. I had carried the notion my entire existence that life is what you make it, and if something isn’t what you want it to be, change it,” Christensen says. “But here we were. Something just got dumped into our world that we had absolutely no control over. What now?” Cystic fibrosis is a life threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. A child with cystic fibrosis has a defective gene that affects the movement of sodium chloride, causing a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. Currently, there are more than 30,000 sufferers of the disease in the U.S. and the life expectancy is only 37 1/2 years. Christensen and her family had little time to digest this diagnosis before the all-consuming treatments started. Little Callie needs twice daily, 30-minute chest percussion therapy to manually move mucus from her lungs, followed by a nebulized breathing treatment. Callie also began taking digestive enzyme pills with food because her body alone cannot digest food. She has a surgical gastronomy tube that feeds her all night while she sleeps, as well as pumps extra food into her tummy after every meal. They also visit Phoenix Children’s Hospital monthly to check her vitals and,
unfortunately, these visitations will increase as Callie ages. “Initially, it is was really hard, but gradually something beautiful shifted in every one of us,” Christensen says. “We all appreciate the little moments so much more and realize how life is truly a gift. We snuggle more, play more and giggle more. It’s not easy every day, but it made us a closer family and better people.”
Making Lemonade When Callie was six months old, her siblings, Zach and Tessa, decided to put up a lemonade stand in front of the house. Instead of charging for the lemonade, they taped a picture of Callie to a can and asked for donations. Angela and her husband joined them outside and talked with neighbors about the intention to raise

money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Within an hour they had raised $50. “After all the hours at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the kids and I wanted to have a bigger impact with our lemonade stand. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When Callie was diagnosed, life gave [us] lemons, and even though we cannot control what comes with it, we can control what we do next.” Now, Christensen and her children set up their “Life Gave Lemons” lemonade stand at different events around the Valley. They collect money for various nonprofits, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and share their message of strength and unity. They have also created a spin-off clothing line for Life Gave Lemons (Christensen formerly owned a girls’ fashion line, Never Nola). “Every single design is inspired by a diagnosis or experience, and every sale raises research funds for the cause it rallies for,” Christensen says. “Our goal with each design is to be playful, light and maybe even make you laugh, all while spreading a bigger message of empowerment. Our fabrics are amazing, and the shirts are cut to be flattering.” Despite her illness, Callie remains the darling of the Christensen family. They call her pure sunshine, with a laugh that is contagious. “We hope to give inspiration and hope – that life can be happy and whole – to other families that are struggling with a diagnosis or disease,” Christensen says. “We want to lift people up! mily Soccorsy has a saying: “Life sometimes takes you down to the studs, like a house being rebuilt from its foundation.” Losing her beloved mother to pancreatic cancer was one of those times. “I felt completely vulnerable and stripped down to my core,” Soccorsy says. “Like a house without a roof, the light was different, the air was different, the world seemed to shift. It caused me to reassess everything.” From the darkness, Soccorsy found light and was inspired to change her career path. With partner Justin Foster she began begin Root + River, a fullservice branding agency that help leaders tell the world their unique stories in a real, honest and inspiring way. “Brands are born in conversations, but most business leaders struggle to talk about their concept, their business,” Soccorsy says. “I believe businesses are manifestations of the purpose we feel in our hearts; they are not just a means to an end. So, I feel deeply that connecting people to their purpose and telling that story is a gift I need to share.” Root + River is now a successful growing business, one built on new beginnings – for business leaders, the brands they love, and certainly for Soccorsy. Do you have a personal motto in marketing? I love mantras! Marketing is not rocket science. It’s “CM squared over time” – clarity of message, delivered consistently, over time. I am guided by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ quote, “If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do matters very much.” So that means we schedule around family life, always volunteering in the classroom and being present at field trips. t six feet feet four inches tall, Jason Caballero – a former college rugby player and the lead sommelier at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess’ Bourbon Steak – may not look like the man to see about wine. But looks can be deceiving. In recent months, Caballero made headlines as the first person in the Valley in nearly 20 years to earn the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Advanced Sommelier certification, a designation that takes anywhere from five to 10 years to get and involves rigorous study, a series of exams and, of course, all sorts of blind tastings. After initially getting his start behind the bar in 2000, Caballero made the study of wine his life’s work once he joined Olive + Ivy in 2006, which, at the time, boasted one of Arizona’s only Advanced Sommeliers, who would become a mentor. “There are many qualities that make a great sommelier, but the most important is to remember that the position is one of service,” Caballero says. And speaking of service, Caballero is “serving” it up in spades with a new Fight, er, Flight Club program at Bourbon Steak. The quarterly program pits Caballero against wine experts nationwide in the wildest blind wine tasting – and food lover’s dream – in town.
Okay, a Flight Club? It all starts with our chef, formerly Jeremy McMillan and now Tony Snyder, who dreams up a five-course menu with wine pairings by our guest sommelier and me. We then let our guests taste and sip everything without knowing who chose which wine. Guests select their favorite pairing for each course, and by dessert, we crown a Flight Club champ. What is the most unique wine experience you’ve ever had? In 2015, I was chosen to travel with the Guild of Sommeliers to France for the wine adventure of a lifetime. We visited a dozen chateaus and tasted wines from the barrel with some of the world’s most iconic winemakers. What’s the key to the perfect pairing? Listening to what a diner likes trumps all the obscure wine knowledge in the world.

eff Krohn, a former ASU quarterback and the current vice president of business development at Alliance Residential Company, vividly remembers the struggle that came with transitioning from life as a D-1 athlete to the professional world. “There is an underlying identity crisis that every single athlete goes through once they are finished with their respective sport,” he says. “From fashion to food, from workouts to your self-worth, everything is in a state of flux.” Trading his athletic wear for fitted suits, blazers and slacks was counterintuitive at first, but over the years, Krohn has developed a bold and functional sense of style that extends far beyond aesthetics. “Great trendsetters aren’t great because of the clothes they are wearing, but rather because of how they feel about what is underneath those clothes,” he reflects. “Understanding and becoming who you want to be physically, mentally and spiritually is the most important part of making the adjustment.” Whether he’s nose to the grindstone, growing Alliance’s national platform alongside his father and sister, or rocking cowboy boots at an industry conference, Krohn upholds this sentiment with tireless devotion. “Half of a room might love your outfit, the other half might hate it,” says Krohn, who admittedly loves shirts with personality and anything that pops. “So [just always] do you.” What would we be surprised to find in your closet? An array of cowboy boots and subsequent hats for any occasion! What are your favorite accessories? Watches, although not a single one of them works. I love pocket squares and ties as well! What is the most important lesson you learned while playing football for ASU? To see the forest through the trees. In other words, don’t get caught up in the minutia of each day … There are many things to distract you in life, but knowing “why” you are doing something causes many of those things to fade into your periphery.

here’s not a moment to lose for Melissa Pruett, owner of MELT by Melissa, a Scottsdale-based salon specializing in brow transformation. ou’ve likely seen Vanessa Ruiz’s face countless times as she brings the news to Valley dwellers. Since 2015, Ruiz has been a commanding and compassionate voice behind the news desk on 12 News, first beginning her tenure as co-anchor of the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts before becoming the lead anchor of 12 News First at 4. Ruiz has had an impressive career, and starting Aug. 1, she’ll add “professor” to her resume, trading the news desk for a lecture podium at the prestigious Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. There, she looks forward to empowering aspiring journalists – and she is reminded of her own experience as a college student at Florida International University, which ultimately launched her broadcast career. “As part of the interview process to be an intern, I got a chance to really see what a newsroom looks like and how it operates,” reflects the Miami native, who actually grew up in Colombia, South America, and later went to high school in Spain. “I was one of the lucky ones selected and started in a national network newscast, Telemundo. There, I got a chance to immerse myself in stories, both national and international. I saw how exciting, fast-paced and important journalism can be, and I knew right away that it was the place for me.” It wasn’t just the fast-paced energy of breaking news that Ruiz fell in love with; it was also the inspirational stories and sharing the world with her viewers. Her energy and enthusiasm quickly got her noticed by the staff. In 2001, she was offered a job at Telemundo as a writer and associate producer, one that would transport her to a pivotal moment in her career. “It wasn’t even a year after I got that first job in television news that 9/11 happened and then the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Ruiz says. “Those were experiences you never forget, especially living them from inside a newsroom. I’ve never looked back since.” Ruiz eventually became Telemundo’s youngest news anchor, with prestigious interviews under her belt, including the heads of state for Israel, El Salvador, Ecuador and Peru. In 2005, she began reporting at WSVN, the Fox station in Miami, and in 2011, she became an anchor for TV Marti, the U.S. government broadcast to Cuba. In 2014, she joined the NBC affiliate in Los Angeles as a correspondent for the morning show, Today in L.A., before transferring to Phoenix. Here, Ruiz quickly climbed the ranks and was offered a position behind the news desk. As a broadcaster, Ruiz has set herself apart – and been lauded for – her fluency in both English and Spanish. With her spunky attitude, glowing smile and generosity of spirit, she has enamored viewers across the Valley. “I always try to connect with whomever I’m interviewing or profiling,” Ruiz says about her on-screen style. “I think that SO SCOTTSDALE! |
empathizing is very important when you tell someone’s story because there’s a reason why you’re there and a journey to share, and sometimes it’s not always pretty. I’ve always felt the situation or person you’re talking to deserves respect. I feel that philosophy is what’s made me tell my best stories throughout the years.”
A New Chapter In June, Ruiz announced her intention to leave her long-standing career in front of the camera to take on a new role at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication as part of the ASU Southwest Borderlands Initiative, which enhances research and teaching focused on the Southwest and the U.S.Mexico border. As such, Ruiz will direct the borderlands coverage team at Cronkite News, the student-produced, faculty-led news division of KAET-TV Arizona PBS that focuses on the U.S.-Mexico border region and Latino issues and culture across Arizona, while also serving as a hands-on learning laboratory for students. She will also help lead Cronkite Noticias, a weekly Spanish-language newscast. Additionally, Ruiz will work on special productions with the title of professor of practice. With all of her roles at ASU, her focus is two-fold: to help bilingual and multilingual journalism students work across their languages and to help to foster the future of journalism, especially as the media business continues to evolve. “After 17 years in TV news, my experiences as a journalist had me thinking that I’d like to get involved in a more direct way to help my community. I wanted to help others and make a true difference in some way. I wanted to reach out and inspire young people,” says Ruiz, who hopes to help students engage more cultures and audiences. “At some point, I started to feel that desire for a professional shift, and this opportunity with the Cronkite School and Arizona PBS will give me the ability to do just that. I get the best of both worlds – inspiring others while getting to practice the craft I love.” One person who has certainly inspired her love for education and service to her community is her fiancee, Sam Alpert, the senior vice president of business for Junior Achievement of Arizona, whose work focuses on education and economic choices for students across Arizona. Ruiz notes that he’s shown her the value and impression that mentorship can create. “I know what it’s like in the beginning, when you’re learning and starting in the TV news business. It can be daunting and intimidating,” Ruiz says. “I hope to be a support for my students and share with them the knowledge and wisdom I’ve gained through the years, to make them feel and know that everything is possible and nothing is out of reach.” Something can be said for the experience that nearly two

It’s the real deal, and I think the audience always felt that. “Behind the scenes, I’ve worked with some of the best people, from producers to technical staff. Beyond the 12 News studio, the Cronkite School is brimming with a new semester of students waiting for Ruiz, eager to learn from her career and follow her footsteps into the exciting world of journalism. “The Phoenix area has meant so much to me professionally and personally. [The Valley] and the experiences I have had as the voice of [it] have made me stronger and a better person,” Ruiz says. “I’ve met some truly wonderful people here, and those experiences are paving my future path. arlier this year, husband-and-wife team Phillip and Gabi Payne opened a new studio gallery, Desert Mountain Fine Art, and you could say art runs in the family. The young couple – who are both artists themselves – opened their first gallery when they were just 19-year-old newlyweds in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Phillip Payne, a bronze sculptor whose family has dedicated their lives to art, grew up playing with clay and learning sculpting from his dad, renowned Western bronze sculptor Ken Payne and the founder of Sedona’s Mountain Trails Gallery. Gabi Payne found her calling through oil painting. Through the years, the Paynes’ expertise expanded by working in different art galleries in New Mexico and participating in tent shows. In 2015, they established themselves in Scottsdale with a goal of creating a home base in the local art community.
Located at Kierland Commons, their new studio gallery showcases a variety of sculptures, paintings, photographs, jewelry and mixed media from 36 national and Canadian artists. The gallery’s concept stretches beyond a typical Western gallery. You can find a vibrant flower oil painting next to the likes of a bronze sculpture, fine jewelry, or one of the artists-in-residence working on their next masterpiece. The eclectic mix of contemporary and Western evocative artwork gives the gallery a distinct style. Among their objectives, the innovative duo seeks to offer affordable art and feature both emerging and established artists. “We welcome any type of art from our artists,” says Phillip, who describes the gallery as a home for dreamers, both those who make art and those who appreciate it. “Art is meant to be a story between two dreamers.”

Phillip notes that art is also an immense part of family culture and the stories behind the pieces are significant and meaningful. “Each piece has a moral behind it,” says Phillip, who emphasizes the importance of knowing what inspired the artwork. “It’s not only what you do; it’s also why you do it.” Desert Mountain Fine Art seeks to not only offer joy and beauty, but to also unify the community. Since their opening, they have hosted events ranging from charity auctions to a variety demonstrations and workshops. Russell LaCasce, a 20-year industry veteran, joined Hotel Valley Ho as executive chef in early 2017, overseeing all culinary operations for the hotel, including the pools, in-room dining, banquets, catering and its signature restaurant, ZuZu. Where did you get your start? When I was 13, I began washing dishes at a tiny seafood restaurant on the beach in Charleston, South Carolina, before heading to Utah to start my career. Ready to get serious, I moved to the Valley in 2006 to attend the Arizona Culinary Institute. How did you get into the local food scene? It all started for me in 2006 while I was still in school, when I took a position at the Royal Palms Resort’s famed T. Cook’s working under chef Lee Hillson. So I got my start at one of the state’s most famous restaurants under one of the Valley’s culinary icons – no pressure or anything! What was your big break? Timing is everything in life. In 2010, just as Sanctuary was going through a renovation and Chef Beau MacMillan was making a name for himself on the national stage with several Food Network shows and specials, I took a position on their team, earning my way to executive sous chef before joining Hotel Valley Ho, a Sanctuary sister property. Village Tavern’s Triple Berry Cosmo packs a healthful punch BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

ounded in 2001, Village Tavern has stood the test of time (especially by Scottsdale standards) by serving something for everyone, from picky eaters to flavor-focused foodies. “In recent years, developing recipes for health-conscious consumers without sacrificing flavor has been top of mind, especially in the summer,” says general manager Brian Harrington. “We’ve excelled at this on our cocktail menu, thanks in great part to all of our fresh fruits and hand-squeezed juices.” The eatery’s Triple Berry Cosmo ($10), for example, is an antioxidant- and superfood-packed sipper for summer. “We start by muddling blueberries with agave nectar,” Harrington says. “Agave has a far lower glycemic index than real sugar, yet none of the chemicals found in artificial sweeteners.” Harrington then adds Absolut Berri Açaí Vodka, which contains no sugar and uses only natural açaí, blueberry and pomegranate flavors, as well as PAMA Pomegranate Flavored Liqueur, made with all-natural pomegranate juice, vodka and a touch of tequila. “Next comes a hint of fresh lime juice and coconut water – which brings a real depth to the cocktail and boosts metabolism – then we add ice and shake.” The final product is strained into a chilled martini glass and garnished with skewered blueberries and a lemon wheel. “More than anything, it is a refreshing marriage of all the fruit flavors, without any artificial or sugary sweet mixers or fillers.” Village Tavern, 8787 N. he definition of upper social class, prestige and luxury motoring is now the SUV, having supplanted large luxury sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche as the choice vehicle for the global one percent. That certainly includes the sevenpassenger Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS63 tested here. It comes equipped with exhilarating driving dynamics powered by the mind-boggling adrenaline performance of 577 horsepower and 561 SO SCOTTSDALE! |

pound-feet of torque from the handcrafted 5.5-liter, biturbo V-8 engine, connected to the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-tronic transmission. The GLS63 is a massively overqualified high-end luxury SUV with impeccable materials and refined quality. Loaded with cutting-edge, high-tech operating, infotainment and safety innovations, there is no shortage of glitz and glamour regarding Mercedes’ SUV options, which includes the GLE, GLC and GLA. The GLS isn’t a new vehicle for Mercedes, but for 2017, the GL changed its name to GLS. It also got a fresh look, with a facelift to the front end, a new hood with power bulges, and design tweaks to the back, including a new rear bumper, full LED taillights and new wheel options. Despite the exterior changes, styling remains boxier rather than taking on Mercedes’ latest design language, which is curvaceous and futuristic. The inside has a redesigned instrument panel and media display, a new multifunction steering wheel, and new trim options, which include special-edition “designo” diamond white and cardinal red quilted leather upholstery. Mercedes has the edge when it comes to luxury SUVs, outselling all other brands, and the AMG GLS63 is not only everything you would want in a vehicle; it’s also everything you could dream about wanting. What I love most about the vehicle is its flat-out performance. Zero to 60 is achieved in just 4.5 seconds, matching a Mustang GT. It has surprising grip on twisty roads when selecting Sport or Sport+ from the suspension setting menu. While both of these measurements don’t approach supercar stats, when considering that GLS is a heavy, 5,800pound, full-sized SUV, that kind of performance is more than impressive. While its styling both inside and out may be close to expiring its freshness date, there’s something thrilling about driving a three-row family vehicle that’s loaded with safety technology – and a monstrous V-8 under the hood.

Beyond the Island Of course, San Diego is brimming with activities nearby. hen Sergio and Country Velador opened Super Chunk Sweets & Treats in Old Town Scottsdale in 2014, they debunked the myth that a small mom and pop shop couldn’t, well, pop on the grandest of stages, notably getting lauded nationally for their locally inspired and sourced cookies, cakes and more by Mental Floss and The Cooking Channel, among others. Out to innovate yet again, on July 8 the Veladors are set to unveil New Wave Market – an additional 1,100 square feet of retail space right next to its Super Chunk sister shop. The shop offers an expanded menu of breads and baked goods, lunch, housemade ice cream and a coffee bar featuring Chandler’s Piexioto Coffee, espresso and even cold brew on tap. The market also boasts a selection of unique (and often food-centric) retail products as well as space for classes on baking and other crafts. “The market is filled with the odd, the unique and the delicious, sourced with products from small-batch makers around the world. Expect foods from brands like American Spoon, COOP’s MicroCreamery and Curio Spice Co., and household items and gifts from designers like Funko, Fishs Eddy and Imm Living,” Country says. “We want to show off

And for those still seeking a Super Chunk fix, New Wave, of course, highlights the Veladors’ desserts, which incorporate local ingredients in innovative flavor combos, including the cowpuncher cookie, which packs a punch with candied jalapeno, and the mesquite chocolate chip cookie, made with Arizona mesquite flour. “The concept, from the name to the classes to the items within, are all focused on the public’s renewed interest in all things ‘craft,’ and celebrates the tradition of making things.” Ironically, according to Country, the New Wave concept was the first idea the Veladors had when considering opening a small business. But, fate stepped in and let them to open the sweet shop first. With its success, New Wave is now a reality as well – and on a grander scale than they initially even dreamed. The July 8 grand opening celebration will include free mini ice cream cones for those who stop by; both the specialty ice cream flavors and waffle cones will be made in-house by Country herself.
