Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

TELL It’s no secret that January in Scottsdale is like the holidays for car lovers. Collector Car Week brings in auto shows aplenty, and the largest one of them – the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction – is more than just fun and games, though it’s that too. Returning for its 48th year, Barrett-Jackson is known for bringing in high-profile vehicles auctioned for charity by even more high-profile people. This year highlights actor Gary Sinise, who you’d recognize as Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump and his roles in Apollo 13 and Ransom, auctioning a custom 1981 Jeep CJ7 with all proceeds going to his eponymous charity, the Gary Sinise Foundation, benefiting veterans and first responders. As you’ll read in his cover story (page 42), Sinise has worked with veterans’ organizations since the ’80s, but it was his portrayal of Lieutenant Dan that spurred him to build a platform of his own to support those who serve. I’ll admit I’m no car lover myself (though I do know quite a bit thanks to our Wheels page and my former years as an editor at AAA Arizona’s magazine!), but the charitable efforts of Barrett-Jackson, and its partnerships like those with Sinise, are certainly something I’m on board with. Other things I’m on board with? Trying something new (page 98), taking care of yourself and your skin (pages 100 and 106), anything blue (pages 105 and 123), soothing soups in winter (page 134), drinks almost too pretty to sip (page 130), discovering new places to dine (pages 84 and 146), and finding something that tugs at your heart strings. For me, that was stumbling upon a new gourmet popcorn shop in Downtown Scottsdale called Ollie Pop (page 86). Because Ollie was the name of my dog who crossed the rainbow bridge last year, I became an instant fan of this shop before I even tried the popcorn. Sometimes the most seemingly small things – whether they are places or gestures – can hold the greatest significance. On that note, may you begin 2019 with a month of discoveries, both big (perhaps scoring the auto you’ve always admired) and seemingly small (such as finding your own version of Ollie Pop). If I have learned anything in the last year that I am taking into 2019, it’s that kindness – to others and to yourself – counts. Taking a cue from our cover star, pay it forward when you can and be kind always. appy New Year, H Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea onnect with us! Olenka Cullinan helps women pursue their passions and build their businesses

Olenka Cullinan is passionate about empowering women to level-up their businesses and mindsets via her 30-day online challenge-style bootcamps, speaking engagements, and #iStartFirst Summit. As a best-selling author and success coach, Cullinan has dedicated the majority of her professional career to helping

people, especially millennials, develop the skills needed to succeed in entrepreneurship, leadership and business. The mindset that drives Cullinan has been with her for many years – when she was 14, her mom gave her a card that said, “Always play by your own rules” and she never stopped doing

So Scottsdale! January ‘19

Pulse UP CLOSE just that. After moving to the U.S. from Russia at the age of 19 with $450 of borrowed money in her pocket, Cullinan quickly learned the value of hard work and perseverance. While working three jobs with no financial aid or scholarship to pay for college and basic living expenses, she maintained her position on the dean’s list every semester and graduated with several degrees, including a master’s in European studies. With entrepreneurship in her blood thanks to a mother who built a wine-making business, it was only a matter of time before Cullinan started her first company. A mom herself, Cullinan launched Rising Tycoons when she saw that high school and college students were struggling with the basic life skills that would enhance their business trajectory. “They were being trained to pass tests, but not provided the tools to spring them forward in their careers,” she says. Rising Tycoons was started as a youth-driven company for teens that taught them skills through entrepreneurship and leadership training. In 3 1/2 years, she helped more than 10,000 teens and 1,500 educators through the program, but she knew she could do even more. Around the same time, Cullinan noticed the glaring gender gap in the business and leadership worlds and turned her focus to helping women step into the spotlight. “While I wanted to fix the gender gap in business, I knew nothing about working with women,” Cullinan says. After creating and implementing the hashtag #iStartFirst into her female-geared speeches, the hashtag’s popularity grew like wildfire. Soon, the inaugural #iStartFirst Summit took place, followed by online bootcamps limited to 20 ladies at a time and in high demand today. “I realized that if we, as women, are willing to go through bootcamps for diets and exercise, we can most certainly go through one for business and mindset,” Cullinan says. “And to do it in a collaborative and safe environment, in competition with yourself only and no judgment, I could create something that would make the business map easy.”

Finding Her Calling When Cullinan was invited to co-author her first book, Passionistas: Tips, Tales and Tweetables for Women Pursuing Their Dreams, it solidified that working with women is what she was meant to do. “I met the most incredible group of talented, brave, passionate and brilliant ladies, and I realized that I had to inspire more of them,” she says, noting that a large part of her philosophy is to teach women to stop preparing for the perfect moment and start doing instead. Cullinan has always had the natural ability to help and inspire people, and that’s how the #iStartFirst Summit evolved. The summit is a one-day transformational event of workshops, tools and strategies to empower women into action. Watching women succeed and build their dreams is what fuels Cullinan, who explains, “It’s truly never about the spotlight; it’s always about the impact.” As a woman in business, Cullinan believes there is still so much to unlearn from our past, our parents’ pasts, and society’s

rules. She feels honored to facilitate this authentic, raw and vulnerable female movement and considers it to be a learning process, as each gender leads and runs businesses very differently. “Women are nurturing by nature. They are givers and often need to learn to put themselves first,” Cullinan says. “When I see another woman come into her powerful self, shining her light – and I’m a part of her journey – that fills me with joy.” Call it a superpower if you will, but Cullinan is categorically good at believing in women’s best versions of themselves before they can see it in the mirror. With two best-selling books and two TEDx talks under her belt, the young girl from Russia with a few hundred bucks in her pocket turned business mogul is on the road to global domination. “2019 is the year of expansion for #iStartFirst. I’m looking to bring bootcamps to other states and to launch the summit in one more city outside of Phoenix. This brand is truly a legacy for me; it’s not about me, but about the incredible tribe of women who are ready to set their journeys on fire,” Cullinan says. “On a personal note, I want to be able to have the freedom to travel and meet other inspiring women globally so I can show my daughter that she, too, can always play by her own rules.”

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference.

ents like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments.

Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray—harness the power of natural ingredi-

Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily

Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at StainD in Sachi Studios, 10201 N Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85253. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for further information.

basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the Goldwell Kerasilk volume line for those looking for added body. Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

FAMILY MATTERS

Cafe Au Plait owner Danielle Pyatt has created an ideal space for coffee, kids and camaraderie

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

While some people look for tranquility in their favorite coffee shop, Cafe Au Plait owner Danielle Pyatt has fostered a space in which parents can enjoy a cup of joe while their children play and socialize in a safe, clean environment. Pyatt and her husband Taylor share a passion for coffee shops, but after their daughter was born, they realized it was difficult to find a place that caters to families, where gourmet beverages and snacks are paired with a space in which little ones can get their wiggles out. As a result, in October 2018, the Pyatts opened the European-inspired Cafe Au Plait along McDowell Mountain Ranch Road to do just that. With midwestern roots and a background in culinary arts, Pyatt followed in her parents’ footsteps by starting a small business, something she had always imagined doing. “There is such a sense of community that comes with owning a small business,” she says. “I wanted to build something like that for my daughters to grow up with.” Pyatt says the inspiration for both their business and their personal life comes from the various cuisines, cultures and fashions they’ve been lucky enough to experience thanks to Taylor’s career in professional hockey and the opportunity to live and travel throughout the world. “We take away pieces of what we love from each of those places, and we’ve been able to integrate them into our business and home life,” Pyatt says. Today, the Scottsdale transplant is busy settling into her new home, chasing her two-year-old, and getting ready for the family’s newest addition, arriving in February. The focus on family stays as strong as ever as Pyatt works on the next phase of Cafe Au Plait, which will include options for private parties, children’s birthday parties, baby showers and more. “My favorite thing about our business is getting to do it side by side with my husband,” Pyatt shares. “Being able to create a business that goes along with our current lifestyle and seeing that other people in similar situations appreciate what we’ve built is gratifying.”

MASTERMINDING THE SOLAR MOVEMENT For Joe Cunningham, the forecast is always sunny

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

While most of the country settles in for what will likely be a long, dark winter, Arizona is expecting sun all season long – which is exactly what Joe Cunningham, the co-founder of Sunny Energy, likes. Cunningham’s road to Sunny Energy, one of Arizona’s largest providers of residential and commercial solar energy systems, began in New York. “In my teens, I was an avid road cyclist in Buffalo, and then I studied civil engineering at Cornell University in New York City,” Cunningham shares. “Solar energy was a topic of study, and it immediately fascinated me. Given it was the 1970s, however, the concept was still in its infancy.” It was so new that Cunningham, who moved to the Valley in 1985, spent the next 20 years leading the charge for other technologies, including computers, cable television, and wireless internet. “By the mid-2000s, solar technology was finally gaining steam. I started selling and installing solar systems, then connected with one of the largest producers of solar technology, CentroSolar, whose U.S. operations were based in Scottsdale,” Cunningham says. He joined the CentroSolar team, eventually managing its entire North American footprint. In 2014, Cunningham and colleague Chris Wood began developing Sunny Energy. “The business didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it wasn’t until 2016 that I fully left CentroSolar,” Cunningham says. “A year later, I also co-founded the Distributed Energy Resource Alliance (DERA), a nonprofit dedicated to the development of solutions to ensure reliable, clean, renewable energy.” Today, while growing Sunny Energy’s footprint across the region – with a recent acquisition in Northern California – as well as heading up DERA and still making time to cycle 5,000-plus miles a year, Cunningham is focused on ensuring a new generation of engineers is prepared to continue the charge of creating sustainable solar solutions worldwide. “Right now, I’m working with students in ASU’s professional science master’s program in solar energy engineering and commercialization, taking them beyond the classroom and into the real world to develop hands-on projects that will drive our industry forward.”

Pulse HIS STYLE

FASHION-FORWARD David Kaufman keeps it classy with smart style choices BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

When he’s not presenting the latest update in the world of finance, David Kaufman can be found traveling the globe, most recently seen looking stylish in the front row during the prestigious London Fashion Week thanks to his wife, Venessa’s, success in the world of fashion blogging. From formal monk-straps to casual Oxfords, Allen Edmonds is his footwear brand of choice due to their characteristic look and durability. T.M. Lewin dress shirts and Hugo Boss suits are also part of Kaufman’s well-stocked closet, as is his watch collection, which includes a Rolex that he hopes to pass on to his son one day. With a preference for classic and polished ensembles, Kaufman turns to iconic men such as Paul Newman and James Bond for inspiration, and he admits that having a wife with a natural knack for fashion has certainly benefited him. “My awareness of the latest fashion trends has been elevated just from being involved in her journey,” Kaufman says. Despite his desire to wear a three-piece suit daily (if desert temperatures allow), the father of two keeps things realistic and simple on the weekends. Monochromatic, fitted V-necks and gray, blue or black jeans with sneakers and an Apple Watch round out his dress code on days off.

What is your top style tip? I know this will sound cliche, but my mentor always told me to “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Tell us about your most prized possession. My vintage Saint Laurent tweed sports coat. I picked it up from an online vintage clothing retailer and it screams sophistication (even the smell – in a good way!). It was in rough shape when I bought it, so I had it cleaned and tailored to give it new life. What are your favorite stores? In the U.S., Uniqlo in San Francisco has to be at the top of my list. Internationally, the Hermes boutique just off the Champs-Elysees.

DRESSING THE PART

As an interior designer, Andrea Bazilus stays true to her knack for style

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

As the owner of Red Egg Design Group, Andrea Bazilus believes that fashion and design go hand-in-hand. And because of her role as an interior designer, she loves taking risks when it comes to style, whether it’s a trendy new dress for herself or a funky throw pillow for a client. Since Bazilus works with so much color, she prefers to dress in neutral tones and dark hues, incorporating a few hippie and bohemian elements into her overall, self-proclaimed classic and timeless look. The busy mom appreciates Blake Lively’s effortlessly hip style, and swears by eyeliner, a bold lipstick and killer high heels to take her look from day to night. Although she is typically running around shopping for projects, Bazilus errs on the casual side for her everyday look and shares, “I love that my career lets me express myself through my style, and I don’t have to follow any type of dress code.” Saks Fifth Avenue is her favorite local store, but the travel fanatic loves to peruse the boutiques when exploring new places. “Some of my favorite clothing items have come from European travels and stores off the beaten path,” says Bazilus, adding that she plays by a few of her own fashion rules. “Know what works best for you, your lifestyle, and what you enjoy to wear. If a trend doesn’t feel right, then don’t do it!”

What trends are you into right now? Growing up in the ’90s, I’m enjoying the fresh take on some of the trends that I wore as a kid. I especially love all of the velvet and crop tops that are back. What is your must-have item? A really nice handbag. It can elevate any outfit and will last for decades with the proper care. What is your most prized possession? A cream lambskin woven handbag that was custom-made for me in Florence, Italy. The artist hand-embossed my initials in 24-karat gold leaf and it’s one of a kind!

Award-winning actor, director and musician Gary Sinise is known and loved for his many roles, but his portrayal of Lieutenant Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump is ingrained in the hearts and minds of audiences. It’s a character that made people feel the realities of war and experience the heartache of military service. It’s also a character that imprinted itself on the man destined to play him. Sinise admits it changed him in ways he was completely unprepared for. “Little did I know at the time that the role of the wounded soldier I portrayed in Forrest Gump would play a bigger role in my life going forward,” Sinise says. “Over the years, I have met so many real-life Lieutenant Dans. It meant something to them that, in the end, that character was OK – that he was able to move on and succeed in life. It seems that the story of that particular wounded Vietnam veteran continues to resonate with our current conflict veterans in a positive and hopeful way.” After his role in 1994’s Forrest Gump, Sinise’s inclination toward supporting veteran charities and missions only continued to grow. Sept. 11, 2001, would shake the nation and leave a lasting imprint on Sinise. In response to that shattering day, military men and women were deployed to the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan. Inspired by their selfless service, Sinise volunteered for his first of many USO tours – his way of personally thanking the military members called to duty. Sinise would go on to tour with his band, the Lt. Dan Band (for which he plays electric guitar), in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Guantanamo Bay, Alaska and throughout the U.S., among other locations, to help boost the morale of the troops and military families. “I knew I had a responsibility after that role, and I didn’t want to let our veterans down, especially our Vietnam veterans,” Sinise says about his lifelong commitment to supporting the military. “I never get tired of veterans calling out ‘Lt. Dan! Lt. Dan!’ because he represents hope and a story we want for all veterans returning from war – that even in the face of tragedy, all isn’t lost.” It was when Sinise met the first post-9/11 quadruple amputee, U.S. Army Specialist Brendan Marrocco, that he would truly find his path to purpose. Marrocco was severely wounded in Iraq when his vehicle sustained a catastrophic hit from a bomb blast. Approached by the New York City Fire Department, Sinise agreed to donate his band to help raise funds for Marrocco at an outdoor concert. Proceeds went to build Marrocco a specially adapted smart home in his native city of Staten Island. It was in this moment that Sinise realized that supporting these heroes was a responsibility that meant everything to him and that he had a unique platform to raise funds and build hope. Thus, the Gary Sinise Foundation (www.garysinisefoundation.org) was born. “Having veterans in my own family and having been involved with supporting our military veterans going back to the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, I decided to become much more active for our defenders however and wherever I could.” Since 2011, the Gary Sinise Foundation has been dedicated to reducing gaps in the care of deserving first responders, military heroes and servicemen. Each program shows appreciation to America’s heroes through entertainment, family support and

44

direct acts of gratitude. Since its inception, more than 70 specially adapted smart homes have been constructed, over 160,000 meals donated, and 943 veterans and their guardians have participated in the foundation’s Soaring Valor experiences, which bring World War II veterans and their guardians to New Orleans to tour The National WWII Museum built in their honor. In addition, the charity provides emergency relief grants as well as adapted vehicles and mobility devices to injured, wounded, ill, and/or aging first responders and veterans from assorted military conflicts.

HEADING TO SCOTTSDALE

Sinise’s mission now brings him to the Valley and to the limelight of the iconic Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction this month. Hoping to raise money for the foundation, Sinise sought out the support of longtime foundation partner Sunbelt Rentals, as well as Fast N’ Loud reality star Richard Rawlings, to bring a unique and highly anticipated car to the stage. On Jan. 18, Sinise will debut his fully restored 1981 Jeep CJ7. It’s a special vehicle, perfect for the awe-inspiring event that is Barrett-Jackson. “I wouldn’t say I’m a car guy, but I definitely have an appreciation for them and I know the connection they carry with many of our military,” Sinise says. “I went to Richard Rawlings with the idea of working on some Jeeps as part of his show Fast N’ Loud, but I had no idea it would turn into what it did. Knowing that Richard and his team can do amazing things with restoring classic cars, we thought, ‘Why not also have him restore an old Jeep and auction it to raise money?’ It was a big ask, but Richard stepped up and boy, did he deliver beyond anything I could have imagined.” The classic 1981 Jeep CJ7 is sure to delight the crowds of the 48th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, and it is being auctioned at no reserve with 100 percent of the hammer price going to the Gary Sinise Foundation. The renovated and completely remodeled vehicle features customizations including foundation logos inlaid on the sides of the vehicle, logos incorporated into the gauges, and challenge coins embedded into the body of the Jeep. “It’s priceless as far as I’m concerned,” Sinise says. “I can’t wait for people to see it [on TV] when it airs on Fast N’ Loud and in person [at the auction]. I have to be honest, part of me kind of wants to bid on that Jeep myself.” Sinise holds a special fondness for the Scottsdale area. His parents once owned a house in Cave Creek, and he returns often to perform concerts with the Lt. Dan Band at Luke Air Force Base. While Sinise is in town for the auction, the band is scheduled to play at both Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. “One of my favorite memories is bringing my family on vacation to Phoenix for spring training,” Sinise shares. “As an avid Chicago Cubs fan, I spent a week watching my Cubbies get ready for the season. There are so many teams in the area – it truly is baseball heaven. I can’t wait to do that again.” This return to the Valley carries with it just as much excitement and anticipation. It’s a day that took dozens of spare parts, months of rebuilding, hundreds of man hours, and all of the skills of the Fast N’ Loud crew that will culminate in the bright lights of Barrett-Jackson’s auction block. Countless men and women will benefit from the money raised from the very special 1981 Jeep CJ7, as all proceeds are going to improve the lives of our nation’s heroes. It’s a passion that runs deep for Sinise and a mission he thoughtfully serves. “I will never stop doing whatever it takes to do my part,” says Sinise, whose new book, Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service, will be available Feb. 12. “It has been my honor to serve the men and women who defend our country and protect our cities. They are our freedom and security providers, and I feel that while we can never do enough for our defenders and their loved ones, we can always do a little more.”

Tyler Staten

Concierge Team Lead and Assistant Front Office Manager, The Scott Resort & Spa Thank goodness for homework. “I was studying business at Mesa Community College with aspirations to be an entrepreneur when I was ‘saddled’ with a class project that would change my life,” says Valley native Tyler Staten. The project required Staten to design, staff and open a fictional hotel from scratch. “Every second of what was supposed to be a taxing assignment – from deciding how many pieces of furniture to put in each room to developing the hotel’s signature guest experiences – was pure bliss,” recalls Staten, who got into the hotel industry after the project, taking a job at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass in 2015. In 2016, he moved over to Firesky Resort (now The Scott Resort & Spa) as a front desk supervisor, eventually also taking on the concierge role. “The hotel had just been acquired by Classic Hotels, and plans were put into motion soon after on an $18 million renovation and its ultimate transformation into The Scott,” Staten says. “Being at the forefront of the transformation was like watching that school project come to life.” Over the past 2 1/2 years, Staten has been watching each phase of the renovation come together firsthand, setting up surprise birthday celebrations, proposals and excursions daily along the way. “One of my best memories was helping a regular guest, whose family visited this hotel in all of its iterations for decades, to locate a special blanket,” Staten says. “That might sound odd, but her family loved the older blankets the hotel used to have in the rooms, so I scoured every nook and cranny and found her one for posterity.” Today, the evolution of the resort has reached its impressive completion, and Staten serves as both the concierge team lead and assistant front office manager. He is also beginning an evolution of his own. “I am currently enrolled in Northern Arizona University’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, focused on furthering my education and bringing everything I learn back here to The Scott,” says Staten, who is slated to graduate in 2020.

Jennifer Hecker

Concierge, Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows Jennifer Hecker’s road to the hotel industry is a “whale” of a tale. “I worked at SeaWorld in San Diego at 16,” Hecker says. She initially dreamt of becoming a veterinarian before seeing firsthand the profession involved far more than playing with animals. At SeaWorld, however, Hecker found that beyond the animals, she loved helping people plan their visits to the park. “In hindsight, it was perfect training for a career in hospitality,” Hecker says After five years at SeaWorld, she moved to the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines in 1990 and spent the next 10 years working her way up to a concierge supervisor at the hotel. “When I moved on, it wasn’t to another hotel, per se,” says Hecker, who joined a San Diego real estate development company as its in-house concierge for residents at a luxury housing community. “Think of it as a concierge, but for guests who never actually leave.” While there, she earned her bachelor’s degree from National University in La Jolla, just in time for the real estate boom to bust. “By 2010, developers downsized, so I moved to Arizona for a new adventure,” she says. In the Valley, Hecker worked in marketing and events for local colleges while earning a master’s degree in hospitality and tourism management, graduating in 2014. She then ventured back into real estate concierge services, this time for Toscana in Desert Ridge in 2014 before joining Andaz Scottsdale in 2018. “I was drawn to Andaz, in great part to its commitment to the local culture and artisans,” explains Hecker, whose role is partially focused on creating unique relationships with the local art community so she can curate unique experiences for guests. One of her favorite artsy offerings is Andaz's private tours of Cattle Track Arts Compound, which recognizes and celebrates Scottsdale’s cultural heritage by providing opportunities – and actual spaces – for artists, craftsmen and students to learn, grow and showcase their works.

Julie Baxter

Concierge, Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort Phoenix native Julie Baxter always knew what she would be when she grew up. “It sounds old-fashioned now, but my mother was a homemaker, so I planned on getting married, having kids and taking care of our home, like her,” Baxter says. But, as the saying goes, the best-laid plans often go awry. “After college, I found myself unmarried and in need of a career, so I got into real estate,” she says. “Then it gets interesting.” At 31, Baxter ran off with her boyfriend to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where they started a powerboat business. By 33, she moved to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and started a parasailing business. “Americans would often come to me for advice on what to do while in Cabo. I became an unofficial concierge of sorts, offering sailing customers tips on the best attractions the city had to offer,” Baxter says. Given parasailing instruction wasn’t a career option in Phoenix, Baxter opened the newspaper and surveyed the “help wanted” ads when she made her way back to the Valley in the mid-1990s. “There was an ad for a concierge position at the Arizona Biltmore, which required expertise in helping people navigate activities and attractions at the resort and across Phoenix,” she says. “It married my unofficial position in Cabo with my lifetime of knowledge of the Valley, so I applied.” That was 23 years ago. Since then, Baxter has become an icon within the concierge community as an active member of the Valley of the Sun Concierge Network for 20 years and a certified Biltmore Resort Historian for 10 years. “And whenever I think I’ve seen and done it all, something comes up,” says Baxter, who fondly remembers one of her biggest challenges – planning a woman’s leap year-themed birthday party, which had to dazzle the well-heeled guests in attendance, including Diana Ross. This year brings perhaps the biggest challenge of her career to date: Celebrating the Biltmore’s 90th birthday all year long with monthly events, culinary programs and plenty of other festivities.

Darvá Fields

Guest Loyalty Relations, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Remember the Nintendo Power Pad? “I loved that thing,” Darvá Fields recalls. “It got me into gaming in such a major way.” So major that he studied computer science at Northern Arizona University in the early 2000s with an eye to becoming a professional game designer. “Except, I was into the art of designing more than the math and science, especially the complex algorithms and binary codes,” says Fields, who transferred to the University of Advancing Technology (UAT) in Tempe in 2002, where they had design-specific classes. Upon transferring, Fields’ parents told him his days as a full-time student were over: It was time to get a job. “I needed something that allowed me to attend classes by day, so I took a night position at a Fairfield Inn in Chandler,” Fields explains. After just a few months, he was offered an assistant manager position and a salary. Once he graduated UAT in 2006, he couldn’t bring himself to leave hospitality. “I loved hospitality even more than that Power Pad,” Fields says. He joined Hotel Valley Ho in 2007 to hone his skills, where he met his mentor, Ronen Aviram. When Aviram moved over to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in 2009, Fields went with him. But, it wasn’t until he gained experience in all levels of service from 2012 to 2018 – including as general manager of Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass, general manager of restaurants at L’Auberge de Sedona, and general manager of Fat Ox – that he was truly ready for his concierge role at the award-wining resort. “I came back in 2018 to lead our concierge team as head of guest loyalty relations, where we do it all from transforming our lagoon into a fishin’ hole for kids to putting on full-scale, multimonth events such as Christmas at the Princess and Summer at the Princess,” Fields says. And he does it all while he and his wife raise their young daughter and son, who is an avid gamer, coincidentally enough.

Catherine Linamen Concierge, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

Initially, Catherine Linamen, a native of Washington, attended Central Washington University to study business. That is, until she and one of her sisters – they are two of nine kids in the family – visited the historic Inn at Death Valley in California for a vacation. “We vowed to come back to the hotel a year later and get jobs there – and we actually did it,” says Linamen, who would venture with her sister to the Grand Canyon a few years later, similarly vowing to get jobs there. Linamen got a sales job at the Grand Canyon National Park Lodges in the early 1980s, eventually serving as their sales manager before heading to the Bay Area to take a position with the Hyatt brand. “And then I took a 25-year break to raise a family,” Linamen says. By the 1990s, she had made Scottsdale home. And in 2009, once the youngest of her four kids was in college, Linamen got an itch to get back into the hotel industry, but only if it was at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa nearby. “Not only was it our neighborhood resort, but I was in constant awe of their seemingly endless list of activities and attractions for families, couples and travelers alike,” Linamen says. She got her foot in the door as a barista in the coffee shop before her decades of experience – not to mention sheer knowledge of the resort itself – quickly attracted attention resort-wide. Within a year, she transitioned into her current role as concierge and eventually also took on the title of vacation services coordinator. “For nearly nine years since, I’ve curated princess-themed picnics, arranged for animals to visit us from the Phoenix Zoo, and helped people celebrate the biggest milestones in their lives,” Linamen says. “We see lots of proposals and weddings, but my favorite experience was helping several families come together to celebrate their mother, who was a recent cancer survivor.”

Irma Rosario

Lead Navigator, Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel Irma Rosario grew up in New Jersey, where most of her family owned small businesses. “After high school, it was natural for me to study business management, assuming I would eventually open a small business, too,” Rosario says. But then, she fell in love … with Phoenix. “I vacationed here in April of 2006,” Rosario says. “I went back to Jersey, packed my bags, and moved here the same year.” During the first several years here, she threw herself into the fundraising and event planning industries while soaking in everything from Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row Arts District to the Downtown Phoenix Walking Ghost Tour. “My pet peeve is when people say there is nothing to do here outside of golf and spas,” Rosario says. “From the museums and art installations to restaurants and bars, there are about 100 things happening at any given time downtown.” Eager to share “her Phoenix” with others, Rosario set her sights on becoming a concierge, or navigator, at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel in 2014. “The navigator role at the Renaissance is unique in that it features all of the traditional responsibilities of a concierge, but it also focuses on building community connections,” she says, explaining that navigators take a lead role in bringing in local artists, musicians and other vendors to the hotel as well as helping guests navigate their actual stays. In 2014, however, all of the navigator roles were filled. Undeterred, Rosario took a front desk position until a spot became available two years later. “Since then, I’ve not only taken on the role of navigator – and now lead navigator – but helped reimagine the position into an all-encompassing role as an ambassador to this city for our guests,” Rosario says. This includes overseeing the hotel’s participation in Renaissance Hotels’ Global Day of Discovery, which takes place annually at the brand’s 160 hotels around the world and focuses on helping guests and locals alike discover the hidden gems that give neighborhoods their soul, from underground art scenes to exotic local cuisines.

Tami Henry

Lead Concierge, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch In the life of Tami Henry, necessity has been the mother of invention, or, more accurately, reinvention. Born in Kansas in the 1960s and raised in New Mexico in the 1970s, Henry got into banking after high school, which eventually took her to Colorado in the early 1980s. “While engaged, my fiance was transferred to Arizona,” says Henry, who moved to the Valley sight-unseen in 1987. “I distinctly remember interviewing for a banking job in Gainey Ranch and having to ask for directions home afterward, given we’d only been here a week.” Though she stayed in the industry a few more years, banking never fed her soul, so in the late 1980s she enrolled in a travel school, which trained people on how to handle all areas of travel for individuals and families. “This led me to working in the rental car industry, assessing transportation needs,” Henry says. She stayed in the Valley until 2004, when her brother passed away. Once that happened, Henry dropped everything and moved back to New Mexico to reconnect with her mom. “While there, I noticed a new hotel had gone up called Hyatt Regency Tamaya and applied for a position so I could stay with my mom,” she says. Henry was hired in the housekeeping department. There, she paid her dues for nearly a year before earning her first concierge position in 2005. She excelled. “But in 2007 my father – who lived in Arizona – developed a brain tumor. I knew I had to come back and be with him,” Henry says. Her team helped get her transferred to the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch. Being a part of the resort since 2007, Henry finally feels like she’s found her forever home. Today, she serves as the resort’s lead concierge. “From arranging gondola boat rides to helping guests charter private jets, this is what I was put on this earth to do, and I was meant to do it here,” Henry says.

Like so many others, golf brought Judy Kabler to Arizona. “I grew up in New Jersey and worked as a flight attendant in Chicago before getting married to a golf pro who was hired at a country club in Wisconsin in the 1970s,” Kabler says. “While he served as director of golf, I ran the pro shop and served as a buyer for the club.” But golf is not a year-round business in Wisconsin, so Kabler and her husband began dividing their time between Wisconsin and Arizona in the early 1980s. By 1984, Kabler used her golf prowess to earn a position at the original Mountain Shadows Resort as a concierge. Though she would still move between Arizona and Wisconsin for several more years, Kabler quickly made a name for herself, eventually moving to The Scottsdale Plaza Resort in 1989. By 2004, the same year Arizona became her full-time home, Kabler was ready for a new challenge. “Hotel Valley Ho was undergoing its multiyear, $80 million makeover,” says Kabler, who joined the hotel as its chef – the term for “head” in French – concierge in 2005. Kabler went on to build the concierge program from scratch, developing an open line of communication between her team and guests that starts the moment they make their reservation and ensures their every need is met – and then some. “No request is impossible. I love finding ways to surprise and delight our guests,” says Kabler, who is one of just 15 Arizona concierge professionals that’s a member of the Les Clefs d’Or USA, the only national organization of hotel lobby concierges, where membership is by invitation only. In addition to her busy schedule at Hotel Valley Ho, Kabler will join fellow Arizona members of the Les Clefs d’Or USA this June, as Phoenix was chosen to host the organization’s 2019 Annual Congress, a gathering of 250-plus members worldwide. She is also a three-time winner of the Valley of the Sun Concierge Network’s Silver Plume Award, the local industry’s highest honor.

A Better Chemical

Ryan Esner is changing chemicals & materials science

E

nvironmental Fluids’ is a turn-key chemical research, scale-up and production company specializing in the synthesis of renewable and bioderived materials. Ryan Esner serves as the founder & CEO and has maintained this role since the company’s inception in 2005. “My interest in chemistry stems from my family’s multi-generational experience in the industry. My paternal grandfather and father ran chemical companies servicing the industrial cleaning and metal working industries throughout the Midwest,” he explains. “I have always had an interest in using chemical processes to design new materials that change the way chemicals around us are perceived. I was asking myself “How can we engineer and produce safer and more ecologically friendly chemical materials?” I found that there was a lack of innovation in new materials that could ultimately outperform previous generation’s work without harming the environment.”

Environmental Fluids’ products are designed for use in industrial and personal care applications, including cleaning products, paints and coatings, adhesives, elastomers, metal-working, oil field and energy, electronics, textiles, mining, construction, printing and water treatment. At Environmental Fluids, they consult with organizations and work alongside quality control departments and laboratories to better understand their processes, clients and markets. This is all done with the intention of designing superior products built for specific customer applications. The use of advanced technologies and research also enhances the rate at which they can produce new materials. The company delivers these specialty chemistries to various market verticals ranging in size and scope and always operates on the basis that no two clients are the same with no two problems solved in the same manner. “Our main goal is to design safer materials and compounds that comply

with EPA and FDA regulations, prioritizing the needs of humanity and the protection of the environment over simply production output and consumption,” said Esner. “We base our approach on providing endto-end solutions to multinational brands and manufacturing companies around the world by working alongside them as technological partners, including those in the personal care, agriculture, food services, construction, aerospace and energy sectors.” Looking towards 2019, Esner and Environmental Fluids have one goal: continue to deviate from the status quo, transitioning into a greener future through the production and supply of bio-based materials that will make products cleaner and safer, enhancing their efficiency and eliminating the damage they cause to the environment. Better Way to Shop

My Sister’s Closet continues to change the resale industry

W

hy borrow clothes from your sister’s closet, when you can raid the closet of every sister

in Arizona? My Sister’s Closet has been a staple in Arizona since 1991, specializing in the resale of top brands, at up to 90% off and in great condition. “I was on a business trip in 1990 and I went into a consignment store. That’s when the wheels started turning about doing our own store and making it look like a high end boutique rather than a typical resale store,” said Ann Siner, cofounder of My Sister’s Closet. “My younger sister Jennifer and I took a gamble and I left a great job. We were either really dumb or very lucky.” By the success they have found over the last 27 years, the argument answers itself with “lucky”. Since opening their flagship location, they have opened four My Sister’s Closet boutiques in AZ, two in CA and have expanded the brand to include four My Sister’s Attic stores, focusing on

home furnishings, and four locations of Well Suited, a consignment shop for men. “We provide great product and customer service. It’s fun to shop our stores for hidden treasure and beautiful luxury items. We are open seven days a week and an appointment is never needed for dropping off consignment. It’s an easier way to shop – for all,” said Tess Loo, who joined her sisters in the family business in 2010. “We believe in giving the customers what they want - great quality at unbelievably low prices. Most of our items are priced 70 to 90 percent below the retail price, and all in great condition,” says Siner. In addition to changing the way people shop, Siner and her sisters are on a mission to change the way companies give back to their community. “My sister and I have co-chaired the pARTy gala for the Phoenix Art Museum, the gala for The Fresh Start Women’s Organization and this was our second year to chair Compassion with Fashion for the

Arizona Humane Society,” said Loo. And, they aren’t stopping at chairing and volunteering with events; they have made commitments with My Sister’s Closet, as well. “A few years ago we gave 33 percent of our net profits to charity! This year we made a $1 million commitment to the AZ Humane Society. We started our own 501c3 foundation, My Sisters’ Charities, explains Siner. “My Sisters’ Charities raised over $300,000 in 2017 for several of our favorite nonprofits throughout the Valley, and we are excited to continue this throughout our time in the Valley.” My Sister’s Closet has the same mission today as when they started out almost 30 years ago: being able to turn your current wardrobe into cash just makes sense … and shopping current labels and looks for up to 90 percent off isn’t a bad deal, either. Giving and the Secret to Success

Wendy Ortiz’ innovative approach to exceeding client expectations

W

endy Ortiz has been in Real Estate for nearly 15 years, and has the same mission now as she did when she first started out. “Work diligently, with care and concern for each client. Every transaction is important and deserving of the same attention, regardless of financial level. I feel a tremendous sense of gratitude when someone offers me their trust. I genuinely feel like I do not HAVE to work in this profession, instead, I feel that I GET to,” explained Ortiz. Ortiz is part of the team at Wendy Walker Fine Properties, specializing in the luxury markets of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and surrounding cities. The #1 Team for Coldwell Banker Arizona for the last few years, to her, those are not the benchmarks where she measures her success. “It has been an honor to be part of the top team for many years, yet it surprises most people to learn that the awards and accolades we receive are

not the successes I am most proud of,” said Ortiz. “The true highlights of my career are the ones that would never be considered “spotlight” worthy, like quietly helping an unexpected widow transition into her next chapter or assisting a family in buying their dream home as they welcome their first child.” The extra touches, and the care her team gives each client isn’t the only thing that sets her apart from others. It’s a mindset and a philosophy, that Oritz feels was best captured in the book, “The Go Giver” by Bob Burg and John David Mann. The Authors say “the secret to true success is giving.” Ortiz believes in this philosophy whole heartedly, bringing it to her business each day. “Caring for my clients and their needs is ultimately the bottom line”, says Ortiz. That approach has lead to what Ortiz describes as her best year yet. “Business has thrived in 2018 - from repeat clients and referrals to forming strategic alliances with agents from

around the world. Surpassing our projections, our team continues to be a leader in technology and innovation. Yet it’s the success she’s experienced with Wendy Walker Fine Properties that has provided a new way for her to give back to the community that has given her so much. “I have had the opportunity to work with many elderly clients, this has made me passionate about helping our aging population navigate through the frightening and oftentimes lonely transitions. I started a group called North Scottsdale Senior Resources that includes people from all different areas of expertise, to help those who are often overlooked.” At the end of every day – and every transaction, Wendy Ortiz has one goal. Jewelry for Generations

Galicia Jewelers designs lasting pieces for all styles

G

alicia Jewelers is a jewelry boutique offering the latest in gold, diamond and platinum jewelry. Founded in New York in 1995 by Lisa Garber, Galicia Jewelers has found a second home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lisa Garber, a GIA certified gemologist, is a second generation jeweler who takes pride in offering her clients exceptional service and quality. She also takes great care in making her clients feel welcome and will give her personal attention to help clients find that perfect piece. “Having grown up in the business, my family members were in all different parts of the industry. I was blessed to have grown up in New York’s Diamond District because it allowed me to learn in depth all the aspects of jewelry making and what goes into creating not just a beautiful piece of jewelry, but also to make sure it functions properly as well,” said Garber. Garber has one mission throughout her business, to help spread beauty

through her designs and keep them alive from one generation to the next. “As such, my niche has become redesigning pieces that have been passed down to clients by family members. Together we come up with a design that will represent who they are while using the same metal and gemstones. The feeling that you are wearing your mother or grandmother’s diamonds but in a style that is special to you, is so rewarding.” Throughout her career, there are few things that make her so happy, “My successes can be as simple as changing a necklace clasp for a larger one so that the owner of the necklace can put it on easier. Simple but to see the client so happy, makes me happy,” said Garber. “And, a fun story - when I was 20, I designed a crystal phone cover with a butterfly for Mariah Carey.” “My collections for 2019 will consist of more colored gemstones, such as Paraiba tourmaline, Morganite and Opals. Of course there will always be diamonds

mixed in the designs,” says Garber. “I’m also debuting bolder necklaces that should be layered with multiple large pendants. I’m adding a couple of different styles to my already popular monogram dog tags. Wearing both silver and gold pieces together are also spectacular looking!” For 2019, Garber predicts the return of the maximalist jewelry: big necklaces, shoulder duster earrings, and big colored gemstone rings to worn on multiple fingers at the same time. “More is more will be the theme for this coming year.” Whatever 2019 brings, Garber has one reminder for shoppers, the importantance of shopping local. “We are part of the community you live in, our children may be friends, we eat at the same restaurants. We support your favorite charities by donating our designs to raise money.” Contact Galicia Jewelers’ at 480.421.9688 or www.galiciajewelers. com, 15147 N Scottsdale Rd H-145, Scottsdale, AZ 85254

Melodi Harmon, Cynthia Dawson and Vivian Lopez opened their first location in December of 2010, with one mission: Getting made up to feel beautiful shouldn’t be an occasional luxury; it should be a way of life! “We loved getting our hair and makeup done, but longed for a salon that made it easy to get an appointment or even just walk-in for these services. We felt it should be something that is done more regularly than only on special

occasions,” said Dawson. Primp and Blow provides a range of primping services to enhance our customer’s self-confidence while celebrating each clients individually. While most blow dry bars focus solely on the blowouts, Primp and Blow have taken it to the next level. “We are good at all things beauty. We specialize in not only blowouts but in makeup, hair extensions, braids, lashes, bridal services and more,” said Harmon. Primp and Blow is a blow dry bar based on a simple concept: “Confidence to go”. Harmon, Dawson and Lopez have seen and will continue to see in 2019 new trends in hair extensions, contouring makeup, air brush makeup, lashes and more. The “selfie-era” has made the concept of getting your hair and makeup done on a regular basis exceedingly popular and Primp and Blow predicts this will continue in a big way into the future years! Primp and Blow was originated in

Scottsdale, AZ and the owners take a lot of pride in their company and being the first blow dry bar in the state of Arizona and currently have nine locations nationwide with six of them here in the valley. Primp and Blow is scheduled to open three more locations here in Arizona, and is on schedule to open 22 locations nationwide over the next two years. In the last few years Primp and Blow decided to take our concept to the next level and have recently started franchising locations. “We are incredibly grateful for our continued success since taking this leap and excited to watch our Scottsdale originating concept take shape into many other states around the nation,” said Lopez. hen owner Elan Efune founded The Diamond Guys in 2005, with Australian partner Ivor Winik, they understood from experience that buying the perfect diamond engagement ring can be challenging and stressful for most of the guys, and they set out to change that. “We want to provide an unmatched diamond buying experience. We have industry-leading technology and the best people available in the market to deliver our renowned unparalleled service. We also have established relationships with the diamond industry’s leading manufacturers worldwide, facilitating the finest selections at the most competitive prices,” explains Efune. The Diamond Guys currently have two locations in the United States, Scottsdale and Los Angeles, and two locations in Australia, with plans for two more locations in the next two years. It’s their exceptional customer service, and spacious showrooms that set them apart.

As Efune says, “our goal is to make the diamond purchase process easy, enjoyable and free of pressure. All you have to do is come in, grab a beer, and we’ll help you select the perfect diamond.” Their philosophy is enablement through education. At The Diamond Guys, Elan shares his knowledge and experience in diamonds with each client and explains any aspect of the diamond that a client cares to know. “We are not a traditional jewelry store and don’t want to be. We specialize in a very specific experience. From our technology to our showroom experience, we believe we are a different and unique destination,” said Efune. “We believe that jewelry business is still best conducted between people, not a person and a digital device. No two diamonds are alike, and websites cannot explain the small, but most pertinent details we encounter from one diamond to the next.” While buying diamonds online has become a popular option for Millennials,

The Diamond Guys urges consumers to be mindful and cautious with online diamond purchasing. “We feel that it is fraught with risk. The average consumer, untrained in what to look for, is overconfident in their online research and has no idea what characteristics and nuances to focus on before making a decision. Consumers who shop online often end up buying something that has a small anomaly simply due to a lack of knowledge. Likewise, when purchasing from a local traditional store that has limited inventory and untrained sales personnel.” The Diamond Guys record proves that they are on to something with their exceptional service. “We are proud of our perfect track record of all time 5-star reviews – and we are proud to continue to offer unmatched service.” Contact The Diamond Guys at 480.656.0652 or www.thediamondguys.net, 15444 N. Helping Women Fight Breast Cancer

Dr. Mahdieh Assar, M.D., Saving Lives Through Early Diagnosis

D

r. Mahdieh Assar, M.D., of Advanced Breast Imaging LLC, is on a mission to help women with early diagnosis, treatment and fighting breast cancer and saving their lives. The board certified radiologist with fellowship training in breast imaging has been helping women for 15 years throughout Arizona. “When I started to work as a radiologist and reading tons of mammograms and breast ultrasound, I realized how much I can help other women to fight against this horrible disease and how early diagnosis of breast cancer can affect their lives and their loved ones,” she explains. “This became my goal and passion to offer my services to women in need in order to fight against breast cancer. My services in ABI include 3D screening breast ultrasound, diagnostic breast ultrasound and body ultrasound imaging.” With her experience in breast imaging and knowing the difficulties in diagnosis

of breast cancer in dense breasts, she decided to offer the most advanced technique in breast screening, 3D breast ultrasound SOFIA. This technique is fast, painless and provides excellent resolution to detect small size breast lesions. Fifty percent of women have dense breast and they are 4-6 times more prone to breast cancer which is a higher risk factor than family history of breast cancer, therefore these women need more screening beside mammograms and that is the screening ultrasound which has not been offered to them and they have not been educated about it. The goal is educating these women about their breast density and let them know there are other techniques that can help them with diagnosis of breast cancer in this situation since screening mammograms are very limited. “This a brand new fast scanning machine that has not been used in Arizona, yet. I am positive that we can help many women in early diagnosis of breast cancer in 2019. The key in survival

of breast cancer is early diagnosis, which with this technique we can achieve it in higher levels. I want to let women with dense breast know that mammogram is very limited in diagnosis of breast cancer for them and they need another type of screening to increase the sensitivity.” Dr. Assar is excited for what 2019 will bring for her business, and the women she treats. “The great thing about this technique is the whole breast will be scanned in 30 seconds, in a nice quiet and spa type office that has been designed for women to decrease level of stress and anxiety,” she explains. “It has been designed by a woman, who has experienced the same level of discomfort and anxiety herself and wanted to change this. I am excited to offer this to all of women who need more.” Contact Mahdieh Assar MD at 480.272.7899 or www. advancedbreastimagingllc.com, 11000 N Scottsdale Rd, Suite 135, Scottsdale, AZ 85254

Cahill has been in the real estate industry for nearly seven years, but prior to her luxury real estate career, she was a corporate attorney with a focus in asset protection. Her experience as a corporate attorney has given her the skills necessary to negotiate and do extensive research for the benefit of any client. “My legal background means that I bring strong negotiation skills to the table resulting in my clients walking away with a financial success,” said Cahill. In addition to Allison Cahill & Partners Luxury Properties, she recently started with Walt Danley Christie’s International Real Estate, where she works with a private clientele in purchasing and selling luxury properties. Cahill focuses on the real estate needs of executives, professional athletes, and distinguished clientele. She offers a discreet,

full service real estate plan for each client, which includes concierge services. “We run a full service, concierge type of business model. For our listings, this means that all our properties will have a professional video, drone photography, high res media, and national and international marketing on a digital platform spanning over 1,000 websites. This starts before the property is on the MLS,” she explains. “In addition, we stage all of our listings. We have always provided this service, but we brought it up a notch this past year. I started my own staging business in 2017. I own the furniture and accessories, meaning that there are never any issues in regards to stagers having to lease furniture and coming up short due to lack of furnishings in the warehouses or subpar accessories. We are constantly updating our staging items to be consistent with the latest trends.” Cahill is looking to take all of the advances she has made in 2018, and

bring them up to the next level in 2019 – even if the housing market becomes balanced. “We are still technically in a seller’s market, but as we begin 2019, we will enter into a balanced market,” said Cahill. And, the same will be seen in the luxury market. “One of the biggest impacts on our luxury market in 2018 were the Federal Tax changes that limit mortgage interest deductions and property tax deduction. As the newer limits on mortgage interest deduction and property taxes have had an impact on many luxury markets across the United States, I predict that this can only help The Valley’s luxury market in that our property taxes are considerably lower here than other cities. This has already created an influx of luxury buyers from California and Chicago.” Contact Allison Cahill at 215.262.7066, allisoncahillslp@gmail.com or allisoncahill.com.

Turning Back Time

Van Dyke Aesthetics helps clients prevent aging … gracefully

S

usan Van Dyke MD is a board certified dermatologist, owner of Van Dyke Aesthetics, and has been a leader in skin resurfacing, injectable fillers and non-invasive cosmetic procedures for over three decades. Van Dyke Aesthetics opened their first office in 1985, at a time when there was no medical specialty known as ‘Aesthetic Dermatology’. Van Dyke started her career practicing medical and surgical dermatology treating skin cancers and cutaneous diseases, but as the field of aesthetic dermatology developed, she was on the ground floor. Van Dyke explains, “the very first filler was introduced in the early 80’s and I was one of the first to use it. When Botox was introduced I was part of the launch. I didn’t invent lasers but I was there when they were invented!” Van Dyke Aesthetics was one of the first medical practices to be 100 percent aesthetic based. The aesthetics industry has been their only focus for nearly 25

years, and is proud to be in the unique position to provide comprehensive and integrated approaches to noninvasive aesthetic medical services. “I am very proud that Van Dyke Aesthetics sets that bar for the practice of aesthetic dermatology. In the beginning it was just myself and one medical assistant, and we were wondering how patients would find us,” recalls Van Dyke. “Over the years they did find us and we developed a reputation of quality and honesty. People trust me to give them guidance on what procedures are or are not appropriate for them.” Van Dyke Aesthetics offers a range of aesthetic services to their patients, including laser and other energy-based services, injectables and physician grade skin care services. Their mission is to inspire clients to achieve natural beauty at all ages. They achieve this through vision and passion for obtaining and making available the most scientifically advanced treatments.

“I could not have predicted the meteoric rise of the field of Aesthetic Dermatology. I was nearly alone in a field in its infancy and now fillers, Botox and lasers are household terms,” explains Van Dyke. “The non-invasive options for cosmetic surgery have just exploded in popularity; no longer is a cosmetic procedure something to hide, but now something to brag about!” Looking forward to 2019, Van Dyke and her team are excited for what will continue with the aesthetic industry. “2019 will bring increasingly advanced techniques to sculpt and contour the face using a wide variety of new fillers that deliver a natural and more youthful appearance. We will see more options for prejuvenation: with preventive Botox, reduction of sun damage, and supporting collagen and elastin generation to keep a young dewy complexion,” said Van Dyke. The decision for Matt to partner full-time with Lisa came in 2005, and by 2006, Lisa earned the Top 1 percent status at Russ Lyon, which she is proud to have attained every year since. “We live and work in North Scottsdale and have found success with a self-imposed “15-minute rule.” We acknowledged early on that the best way to serve our clients is to only take on

business that’s within a 15-minute drive from our office,” said Lisa. “That way, we’re essentially always “on call” and readily available for any buyer or seller that we’re working with. I also find that it allows us to have the highest level of service by providing focused and specific knowledge of a particular area.” “Loving where you live and living what you love is our secret to good business,” confirms Lisa. “We love living in North Scottsdale because of the hiking, fine dining, great weather and elevations, horses, cars, golf, views, and the melting pot of friendly people from all different regions and backgrounds. Everyday we get to experience God’s country by just walking outdoors and seeing the sunshine over Pinnacle Peak Mountain. Market bubbles in CA, WA, and Denver,

Volanti serves a classic breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menu with a farm to table focus and influences from around the world in an unbeatable location with views of the airport and McDowell Mountains. For owner Dee Dee Maza, the inspiration has always been close to home. “I grew up with two grandmas that loved to cook. I spent most of my childhood getting recipes from them and trying, most of the time very badly, to cook like they did. After years of helping them cook for all occasions and seeing what an impact cooking had on the friends and family they cooked for; I grew to love it even more and I even got really good at it.” The new restaurant isn’t the only thing Maza and the team at Volanti are building, they are also tapping into Maza’s

experience in catering for a private event space. The Venue at Volanti is a 4000 square foot private event space and is dedicated to providing personalized service, exceptional food and beverage in an unbeatable atmosphere. In addition, they have 12 different exclusive footprints at the Scottsdale Airport for events and do Private Jet Catering. “I have had the opportunity to meet many different people from all over the world. Events large or small, the Volanti team aims to make your next event unforgettable. They pride themselves on providing premium service, creative menu options and organized production throughout the venues and the Scottsdale Airport. In addition to the amazing views that the Airpark provides, for Maza starting the restaurant in Scottsdale was a no brainer.

“Scottsdale is a powerhouse for business. I love the many people that I meet that are from all over the world. I love the environment that thrives on the success of building relationships,” she said. “My vision has always been to gift my guests with an experience from the second my phone rings or they walk in the door,” explains Maza. “I have found my number one goal, above profit, above sales, above everything is the power of relationships and how I can relate to each guest, employee, vendor, and give them an experience they will never forget.” Coming in November 2019, Maza and her partner Christine Key, along with Scottsdale Hangar Events, are creating a nonprofit and hosting The Scottsdale Airfest. Dr. Kaye completed six years of specialty apprenticeship in urologic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s premier centers of medical education and excellence. “Early on during my formative years I developed a keen interest in science, particularly the science of health. In high school and college I was most challenged by the responsibility of understanding the human body and providing care and comfort for people compromised by illness and disease,” explains Dr. Kaye. Dr. Kaye, owner of Natural Restoration Centers of America, has specialized in critical health issues affecting both women and men for almost 3 decades. Dr. Kaye settled in Scottsdale, AZ where he has strived to care for his patients with sound judgment and compassion. “Over the past several years, it has

been a personal highlight to see the growth of Natural Restoration Centers of America, a facility that utilizes state of the art biologic therapies, including stem cell treatments, to combat a range of conditions including neuropathy, back and joint pain, erectile and vaginal dysfunction, restless leg syndrome, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s and colitis, to name a few,” said Dr. Kaye. “In addition to offering contemporary care and management for urologic conditions that are in my realm, my practice has expanded in the past decade to include a think outside the box approach to both urologic and non-urologic conditions. As part of this unique approach the use of biologics including “stem cell therapies” are routinely incorporated into the care of my patients. Throughout his career Dr. Kaye has strived to offer his patients “state of the art care.” “The field of medicine is a constantly changing environment. Our personal desire to always be the best and provide the best

is often challenged by thoughtless regulation, limited resources, and insurance company meddling! Despite these pressures, I have been able to grow and develop a tremendous amount of experience utilizing futuristic regenerative techniques and procedures. It has been fascinating to me to observe and be responsible improvements in numerous conditions that have impacted people for years despite “standard” treatments.” Dr. Kaye offers non-invasive, safe/low-risk procedures with little to no downtime. Industry estimates are that anywhere from 70 to 80 perfect of women are wearing the wrong size bra, although in my opinion, informed by more than 47 years of experience, it’s more like 90 percent. We want you to operate at your prime, enhancing your whole life.” Since 2006, Drs. Bosch and Robinson have specialized in Advanced Hormone Replacement Therapy, age management and sexual wellness. Recognizing the complexity and sensitivity of the body’s hormone system – and that each person is unique – they work to fully understand each patient’s individual hormone system to provide real health and healing. “Over time, your body’s hormone system can drift,” Dr. Bosch said. “We design a personalized treatment based on comprehensive medical analysis utilizing innovative methods. And, we listen. We

hear the things that are often missed. Ultimately, we help patients feel the way they did when they were younger.” According to Drs. Bosch and Robinson, the natural process of aging does not mean you have to feel old. In fact, hormonal changes that cause fatigue, low libido, and issues with mental clarity can be reversed – helping people renew their sense of youth. “We use natural, bio-identical hormones and nutrients,” Dr. Bosch said. “These are absorbed and processed more effectively with fewer side effects for effective hormonal and metabolic balance.” At The Hormone Zone, it’s not just about fixing the issue; it’s also about unearthing the cause of disease and then leading you to an optimized self. Often, hormone imbalance, thyroid disease and nutritional deficiencies are at the root of the problem. “In 2006, there was an emerging science for natural approaches to hormone imbalance and performance optimization,

which continues to grow,” Dr. Robinson said. “We have been doing this for a long time and have watched it evolve.” In addition to hormone therapy and age management medicine, The Hormone Zone’s comprehensive approach to wellness, longevity and hormone balance includes options for sexual health, medical aesthetics and stem cell therapy. As advocates for healthy, intimate relationships, Drs. Bosch and Robinson have become known as The Sex Docs, whose mission is to help patients improve their intimate relationships. Providing exceptional client care and really listening to what people have to say, produces great results in the end. Small likes to spend time with all his clients and really get to know each one.

“Glo Medspa has been in business for 6 years. I began my practice in a small room doing injections with only Botox and Juvederm. Some of the biggest highlights of my career so far, is seeing clients come in from all across the country who fly out to see me. It totally blows my mind to see how far I have come since starting my business,” said Small. “I knew I wanted a more hip and trendy type of spa atmosphere, with a cutting edge in new procedures and techniques, and that is exactly what we have accomplished at Glo Medspa. 1179 Covering the Risk

Christina Church covers clients’ lives - literally

C

hristina Church has been working in the insurance industry for 20 years with North Star Resource Group. Growing up in an insurance family, she has been around it her entire life. “As I started learning more about the industry I was shocked that my own family was so underinsured. It actually frightened me. Thank goodness nothing catastrophic happened during that time, we could have lost everything we have worked so hard for. I had no idea that your wages can be docked for years if you are underinsured, and you can’t pay out of pocket. There is almost no education on this topic, I want to change that” said Church. When North Star Resource Group made the decision to expand into the property and casualty industry and open Borealis Insurance Services, Church jumped at the opportunity. Borealis was formed to work side by side with North Star’s 160 financial advisors to analyze their clients’ current risk management program, educate them about coverage

options available in the marketplace, and empower them to make the appropriate changes to fulfill what is important to their family or business. As an independent agency, Borealis has access to many of the industry’s premier carriers and the ability to find the best coverage and value for their clients. “It is simple, “When your values are clear, decisions are easy. My goal is to educate families and small businesses and to protect them from the unknown. My niche is getting my clients higher coverage to eliminate any gaps they may have, while potentially saving them some money. Surprisingly, this actually happens the majority of the time, which is amazing! I am very proud of the fact that much of my training has been acquired in the trenches. I am naturally inquisitive and ask a lot of questions. No two cases are the same and I have the opportunity to learn something from each one. It also, makes my job very interesting and keeps me on my toes!”

While some find insurance boring, Church is proud to take on the ‘boring’ part of life and ensure that her clients are covered from risk. She is also certified in working with Premier Families. “This gives me even more insight to help the client who may have multiple homes, antique cars, fun toys, etc. These clients usually have heirlooms and/or collections that they have worked their entire life to accumulate and these need specialized protection. I pride myself on asking the right questions that someone else might over look,” she said. “When someone has a catastrophic occurrence and can call me up and know they are covered financially, they no longer think insurance is boring, they are just grateful that they have one less thing to worry about.” Contact Borealis Insurance Services – a Division of North Star Resource Group at 480.712.7285 or Christina@BorealisInsurance.com, 6710 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 210, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

NEW MENU FOR A NEW YEAR BOURBON & BITES

The Bourbon Cellar has relocated from Carefree to North Scottsdale – at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads – with an all-new menu, fresh decor, an expanded cocktail list, and a larger patio and space. Owned and operated by former veteran Doug Smith, who is also the executive chef, the restaurant uses farmto-table foods from local purveyors, meat from Smith’s own butcher shop (French’s Meat), and fresh seafood flown in daily. True to its name, The Bourbon Cellar has 300 bourbon selections, bourbon-tasting flights, and barrel-aged cocktails. And true to Smith’s roots, veterans are honored every third Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m., where 100 percent of the proceeds from a $15 buffet benefit American Legion posts in the Valley. www.thebourboncellar.com.

Just in time for a post-holiday detox, Farm & Craft has debuted a new menu featuring a plethora of new items from starters to entrees as well as updates to existing items. The menu refresh includes listing all of the restaurant’s local and responsibly sourced vendors, using grass-fed beef throughout, more organic products, and additional vegetarian dishes that can be made vegan. New items include a health-packed probiotic bowl, a roasted half chicken, a super green salad, and vegan banh mi. In other news: Turkey has been removed from the entire menu to reduce sodium-heavy items and the farro mac and cheese has made its return (with a gluten-free option available). www.ilovefarmandcraft.com.

COUNTS!

With over 30 years of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgical experience, Dr Wolin and his staff not only Talk the Talk… they also Walk the Walk. Listen to what his patients have to say about their care and surgical results… (Verified independent interview) Just a few months ago I got a good closeup view of my lips in the mirror. I was horrified. How could I possibly have gotten so many wrinkles in not only my lips but also in the areas surrounding my mouth? I never even smoked cigarettes..I immediately decided that I would try and remedy the situation. I went to a local spa where I was told that a temporary filler combined with a standard skin peel would solve my problems. After undergoing multiple injections, it was evident that the solution to my problem not in a little jar of magical potions nor in a minuscule injection of temporary filler. The problem could only be solved by a combination of permanent volumizing as well as resurfacing my skin. I had heard of Dr wolin and his greater than 25 year experience using Fat Transfer techniques to revolumize and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. I also found that he was using a fantastic chemical peel resurfacing technique called “ The Croton Oil Peel” which produced amazing smoothing of the skin without the downtime associated with Laser Resurfacing. In just 45 minutes, under local anesthesia, I have been able to reclaim my deflated and wrinkled mouth…My results were amazing…natural and permanent.

The annual Celebration of Fine Art connects 100 artists with art enthusiasts from Jan. 12 through March 24, showcasing artists from Arizona and throughout the country who have been selected for their exceptional art and celebrated designs. Located in North Scottsdale under the hard-to-miss signature “big white tents,” the art show will feature 40,000 square feet of interactive space, including working studios, that frequently evolves throughout the 10-week exhibition. “Over the course of the past 28 years, the tradition, passion and dedication of connecting people to art has remained a constant focus, sparking conversation and fostering newfound friendships between art lovers and artists,” says Susan Morrow Potje, the co-owner and show director. “We’re incredibly lucky to work with such a wide range of talented artists – from painters, sculptors and jewelry makers to photographers, fiber and glass artists and more. The variety of skills our artists bring to the show only contributes to its energetic atmosphere, making it a true destination for all art lovers.” Each Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. during the show’s run, a panel of admired artists will discuss rotating topics ranging from metalworking to art history as part of the popular Art Discovery Series. Now celebrating its 48th year, the roster is expected to draw in even more attendees than ever before. “The Barrett-Jackson auction has been a staple of the Scottsdale community for nearly half a century,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “[This year’s auction] will bring with it a diverse selection of collector cars; guests from around the world; and celebrities from the worlds of

entertainment, sports and business.” More than 1,700 vehicles will be on display and crossing the auction block, including a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette custom coupe, a 2005 Ford GT, and a 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint race car. These beauties, among others, will decorate WestWorld of Scottsdale’s indoor-outdoor grounds. In addition to vehicles, Barrett-Jackson offers an impressive lineup of automotive-related memorabilia, including a vintage carousel. With 200-plus interactive displays and shopping opportunities in the vast Exhibitor Marketplace and hundreds of vehicles up for auction each day, Barrett-Jackson is equal parts a car show and a lifestyle event. A selection of VIP packages are available, including getting access to Craig Jackson’s own box. Other options include

a Gold package – with floor seats, access to the Staging Lanes Hospitality venue, and viewing the cars before they cross the auction block – and the Luxury Lounge package, which offers access to the VIP Skybox Hospitality Suite. At Barrett-Jackson’s core, though, has always been community outreach. This year, more than a dozen vehicles will be sold to benefit charities like the Arizona-based TGen Foundation, Barrow Neurological Foundation and Childhelp. “My father, Russ Jackson, and his business partner, Tom Barrett, founded our company on the principle of giving back to the community,” Jackson says. “I’m proud to continue that tradition this January by raising funds and awareness for deserving charities across the country.”

NEW YEAR RESET Start fresh with a holiday detox

The holiday season has a habit of tiring your body out, from overindulging to shopping fatigue to one too many late nights. With the festivities behind you, now is the perfect time to indulge in something else – a refresh of muchneeded TLC for the mind and body with detoxifying spa treatments.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Holiday Body Detox Treatment At the recently renovated Luna Spa at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch, this 80-minute body treatment nourishes at the cellular level. Starting with a cup of nutrient-packed detox tea, it continues with an exfoliating coconut sugar scrub containing shea butter, cane sugar, vitamin E and coconut water, followed by a body detox wrap using chocolate mud. While snuggled in the warm mud, which also contains ginseng extract, cocoa, live carrot cells and a vitamin blend rich in antioxidants, guests will get a relaxing peppermint oil scalp massage. The treatment concludes with a sweet cream body milk containing cucumber extract and a blend of six natural essential oils. $179 (through Feb. 28). www.thescottsdaleresort.com. Magnesium Detox Wrap The Revive Spa at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa offers several water-based treatment options with a myriad of benefits for the mind and body. One tailor-made for this time of year is the 50-minute Magnesium Detox Wrap, which alleviates muscle cramps and improves muscle function and energy generation. It begins with a gentle, but effective, exfoliation meant to increase circulation and strengthen vascular tissue. A light wrap using a gel mask made of magnesium, which helps more than 300 enzymatic reactions within the body including the metabolism of food and synthesis of fatty acids, is then applied. Finally, a rich body lotion application with aloe and algae extracts will soothe and protect the skin. $155. www.jwdesertridge.com. Recovery Algae Wrap The brand-new Phoenician Spa’s Recovery Algae Wrap is an ideal solution for both overworked muscles … and hangovers. This 50-minute remineralizing wrap, which is infused with the uplifting aromas of grapefruit, rosemary and peppermint, features an exotic combination of algae, kelp, seaweed and a deep detox mud. The ingredients work together to flush out impurities in the body and skin as well as boost the immune system. It also increases cellular metabolism, which directly impacts the body’s energy and its ability to rid itself of excess empty calories and sugars. $185-$195 depending on the day. www.thephoenician.com. Adobe Clay Purification Wrap This 60-minute Native American-inspired healing treatment at JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa exfoliates, nourishes and detoxifies. It begins with an aromatic conditioner, which is massaged into the hair. Then, adobe clay, which is known for absorbing into the skin and drawing out toxins as well as for relaxing muscles, is applied to the body. Southwestern-inspired soap and cactus fiber cloth are provided to shower off the clay, after which heated juniper and sage oils are applied to the body. The treatment is completed with a short stint in the sauna to infuse the oils deeper into the skin. $165. www.camelbackinn.com.

Holly Ruggles imparts whimsy and wonder into her marine-inspired art

BY HEATHER LYNN HORVAT

Holly Ruggles may be a new artist to Scottsdale’s On the Edge Gallery, but she has been making art her entire life. Growing up, Ruggles’ father owned a flower shop where she watched him create stunning arrangements with flowers and other materials. “He always let me experiment with anything I could find: castoff flowers, ribbon, wire, Styrofoam, spray paint,” Ruggles says. “The impact on my art is undeniable, and becoming a collage artist was a natural outcome.” Her early experimentation in creativity led to receiving a master’s degree in art education and teaching art for 35 years. She also received several notable grants for graduate work in art and art history, including a National Endowment for the Humanities to study in Florence, Italy; a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher grant; and two Freeman Foundation grants for East Asian studies. Through her education and experience, Ruggles has found inspiration in East Asian art and culture, leading to her specialization in gyotaku, a Japanese method of nature printmaking using fish to create an image. However, her approach is different than traditional gyotaku artists. “Reality is not my goal. Rather, I combine my gyotaku fish with watercolor and collage to create unique underwater worlds,” says Ruggles, noting that she uses multiple methods for her fish images that include molds, original silkscreen prints, and patterned paper. Ruggles often works on several pieces at once, with each fish painting having three stages. First, she uses multiple techniques to paint watercolor backgrounds. She then begins the time-consuming process of printing the fish by painting the fish’s body with acrylic, often blending in metallic paints to create shimmer. “Each print involves repainting the fish body [to add additional color and highlight], so no two are exactly alike,” Ruggles explains. She notes that collaging, the final step, is when “the creative process kicks into gear and the real fun begins.” Drawing from her time in the flower shop, Ruggles takes a similar approach with her underwater scenes. Her hunt for interesting items never stops – pressed leaves, butterfly wings, wool fiber, and miniature sand dollars are some of the objects that often adorn her paintings. “I always hope to create worlds where viewers will become intrigued and want to follow my fish as they swim through mysterious waters,” the artist says. The environment is a concern for Ruggles, and she hopes her gyotaku works transcend art by serving as a reminder of how important it is to protect Earth’s precious waterways and oceans. Ruggles’ work can be viewed and purchased at the On the Edge Gallery, 7050 E. 5th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.265.8991; www.ontheedgegallery.com.

2019 JAGUAR I-PACE

The all-new, all-electric crossover challenges the standard for luxury electric vehicles BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $69,500 Price as tested: $86,895

Until now, if you wanted a luxury electric crossover utility vehicle, your choice was limited to one – the Tesla Model X. However, Jaguar has started delivery of its own luxury crossover electric vehicle, the I-Pace. The I-Pace is a sleek, sharp-looking five-passenger crossover with a pair of electric motors that are powered by a 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. It delivers 394 horsepower with an estimated electric range of 240 miles on a single charge, matching the range of the Tesla Model X 75D. In just 45 minutes, it can recharge up to 80 percent via a 100-kW DC charger. The Jaguar I-Pace is nothing short of spectacular. It has gorgeous sleek-as-a-sports car styling with futuristic LED headlights; an aerodynamically curved front grille; and slim, deployable door handles. Powerfully quick, it handles like a Jaguar F-Type, reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Its all-wheel drive with off-road capability fords water almost 20 inches deep and can tackle deep sand, muddy ravines, and steep mountain trails akin to a Land Rover. By contrast, Tesla can void your warranty if you take their vehicles off-road.

124

So Scottsdale! January ‘19

Unlike the cold, sober minimalism of the Tesla Model 3, the I-Pace’s interior is beautiful and stimulating. Much like the Jaguar E-Pace, it combines sport and sophistication, featuring exceptionally comfortable seats and a convenient center console. The option for remote pre-conditioning ensures the cabin reaches the ideal temperature before use. Its extra-long 117.7inch wheelbase allows for a very large interior contained in a small package, with a notable 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space, or 51 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. A sizeable number of switches, dials and operational hardware means you don’t always have to fumble around with menus on a languorous touch screen. The driving experience is, for the most part, quiet and calm. Jaguar engineers have included a feature that creates an artificial interior sound informing the driver of speed and acceleration that proves to be stimulating without mimicking the sound of an engine roar. The 2019 I-Pace is available in a variety of trims: EV400, S, SE, HSE, and a First Edition (tested here) model available only for the first year.

Engine: Twin electric concentric motors with a 90-kWh battery Horsepower: 394 Fuel economy: 80/72 mpg-equivalent city/highway Driving range: 240 miles Seating: 5 Fab features: Gorgeous, athletic styling inside and out Excellent on- and offroad capabilities Standard Amazon Alexa skill feature

In Italy, an “osteria” serves simple food with an emphasis on local specialties and homegrown ingredients. At Fellow Osteria, which opened at ASU SkySong in December, the aim is to pair that traditional concept with contemporary touches. A seasonal menu highlight, the eatery’s tangy, savory and lightly sweet House-made Swiss Chard Ravioli ($14) starts with made-from-scratch ravioli crafted with water, eggs and imported Italian flour. It’s filled with locally sourced red Swiss chard as well as pecorino, Parmesan and ricotta cheeses. After a quick boil, the ravioli is transferred to a Paderno pan and cooked with sage, butter and olive oil. The ravioli is then plated and finished with the same sage-infused butter before being topped with fresh sage and delicate Parmesan. Fellow Osteria, 1455 N. FLAMING FIREWATER

No Smoke Without Fire lights up the Liberty Station DC Ranch cocktail lineup

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

When Liberty Station American Tavern & Smokehouse DC Ranch opened last year, the beverage program was centered on classic, vintage cocktails. “Over time, we evolved,” says Matt Keeler, Liberty Station’s director of operations. “Today, our cocktails are modern – and often cheeky – riffs on vintage varieties for today’s guests. Given they’re riffs, we even named each one after a classic rock album with great riffs of their own.” For example, No Smoke Without Fire ($12), which is named after the 1988 Bad Company song, is a twist on the sazerac. “Like a classic sazerac, we start by rinsing the mixing glass with absinthe,” Keeler says. “But rather than cognac or whiskey, which are the base spirits in a sazerac, we start with Sotol Por Siempre.” Sotol is derived from the desert spoon plant, a relative of agave, making the spirit a cousin to mezcal and tequila. “It’s almost as smoky as mezcal with more of a peppery earthiness,” says Keeler, who combines the sotol with housemade cherry anise liqueur to bring out the black licorice flavor of the absinthe rinse while enhancing the sweetness. He then adds simple syrup and St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram, which pulls out the pepper and spice notes of the sotol and anise. “We stir the ingredients and then pour them into a bucket glass over an artisanal ice cube,” Keeler says. The cocktail is finished with rumsoaked cherries that have been dipped in cinnamon, skewered and lit on fire at the bar before being brought to the table. According to Keeler, the final, fiery step isn’t just your average garnish – it’s a show. Liberty Station DC Ranch, 20825 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale; 480.278.7044; www.libertystationtavern.com.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Cory Oppold of Atlas Bistro

At Atlas Bistro, executive chef Cory Oppold creates multicourse, fixed-price menus that change regularly based on seasonal – and often local – ingredients.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

What would we be surprised to know about you? I didn’t work in a professional kitchen until age 22! How is that possible? I grew up on a dairy farm in a small Illinois town, milking cows and helping with our crops. My sister lived in the “big city” of Phoenix and loved it, so I moved here in 1998, at age 18, to attend school with plans to be an architect. I soon found myself eating out more than studying, fascinated with food I never saw on the farm. In 2001, I enrolled at the Scottsdale Culinary Institute to marry studying and eating together as best as I could. So how did you finally get into the kitchen? In 2002, an instructor saw something in me and helped get me my first job working at Different Pointe of View (DPOV) under then-executive chef Ivan Flowers. I would spend the next seven years mentoring under him, first at DPOV and then at L’Auberge de Sedona in 2007. How did you make your way back to Phoenix? In 2009, I came back to the Valley to put some advice from Ivan into action. He suggested I take time out from working in busy kitchens to teach, which would help me master my process for effectively and efficiently developing talent. So, I became an instructor at Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale. Was he right? Yes, the slower pace not only taught me how to develop talent, but it also allowed me to develop my own signature approach to cooking: building complex flavors by combining multiple simplistic ingredients, treated as they were meant to be. And, finally, tell us about coming to Atlas Bistro. After quick stints at Binkley’s and Tarbell’s, I joined Atlas in 2014 as the executive chef, where owner Todd Sawyer embraces my approach to food and my passion for artful – and often abstract – plating concepts. The dip in Valley temperatures during winter months doesn’t warrant ski jackets or snow tires. It does, however, give you an excuse to dive into hot, hearty soups – and their history – all month long. The word soup itself derives from the French word “soupe,” and evidence of the cold-weather favorite can be found dating back to 20,000 B.C. when our ancestors used animal hides to help waterproof vessels so they could boil water needed for the base of their version of soup. Thankfully, chefs have upgraded both their vessels and recipes over the years. Here are a variety to try this month.

End NEW IN TOWN

DESTINATION DINING Ocean 44 makes its triumphant debut in Scottsdale

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY J. MARTIN HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

After more than a year of anticipation, Ocean 44 has opened its doors. And the 12,000-square-foot ultra-luxe seafood restaurant, located in the former Harkins Camelview Theatre adjacent to Scottsdale Fashion Square, and owned by the lauded Mastro family, was worth the wait. “This is different than anything we have done in the past,” says co-founder Mike Mastro, who owns Dominick’s Steakhouse and Steak 44 along with his brother Jeff, father Dennis, and partner Scott Troilo. “The atmosphere is second to none, featuring dramatic and intimate dining settings. At the core of the Ocean 44 experience is our chef-sourced, highest-grade, sustainable, fresh seafood from around from the world, enhanced with unique and interesting appetizers and side dishes that go beyond the traditional seafood menu.” The concept marks the Mastro’s first foray back into a seafood concept since their massively successful Mastro’s Ocean Club in 2007. Leading the culinary program is Siegfried Hohaus, who helped launch Mastro’s Ocean Club before the family sold the concept, and Mark Lupino, the executive chef for the family’s current brands.

Much of the menu is served a la carte so guests can mix and match. To start, there is a raw bar menu as well as shellfish and appetizer menus. Offerings in these categories run the gamut from iced whole Maine lobster (MP) and Prince Edward Island mussels ($27) to New England lobster rolls ($29) and crispy shrimp deviled eggs ($18). There are also non-seafood highlights on these menus including prime steakhouse meatballs ($10-$14) and wagyu beef tartare ($29). “For main course offerings, there is an a la carte fresh fish menu as well as a lobster and crab menu, and all items are sourced from sustainable fisheries when available,” Jeff says. Standouts include pepper-crusted bigeye tuna ($49), twin whole live Maine lobsters (MP), New Bedford sea scallops ($44), and Shetland Island salmon ($39). “There are also several options for meat lovers, including nearly a dozen steaks from the Steak 44 menu,” Mike says. Several of Steak 44’s potato dishes and side items also made the Ocean 44 menu, but there are some Ocean 44 exclusives, too, notably Maine lobster and browned butter noodles ($36). “The wine and cocktails are also a point of pride as we feature more than 40 wines by the glass and 750 by the bottle as well as all of our most popular signature cocktails from Steak 44, along with some new options,” Jeff says. Visually, the massive-yet-intimate space similarly impresses – especially the glass expo kitchen where guests can watch the culinary team at work – and the large bar with modern, sleek finishes. Ocean 44 is open for dinner 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, 4 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The bar stays open later nightly. Ocean 44 is located at 4748 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale; 480.867.0044; www.ocean44.com.
