With Valentine’s Day on the horizon (it’s Feb. 14, in case you needed a reminder!), we look to love in a multitude of ways this month.

First, there are some ways to show your love: a special date night at Scottsdale’s newest wine bar (page 106) or at one of its hidden gem hot spots (page 62) and gifts that say “be my valentine” (pages 67 and 83).

Tracey L. Martin is on a mission to transform the lives of teens, young adults and families

An immersive transformational life coach with more than 25 years of experience, Tracey L. Martin has helped hundreds of people change their lives by living and communicating intentionally.

Raised on an organic farm in Missouri, Martin was imbued with the values of hard work, respect and kindness from a young

age. “My parents truly poured into me on every level,” she says. “I realized early in life that everything is connected and everything matters.”

Martin began her career as a personal fitness trainer, eventually opening her own fitness facility. Her upbringing also infused

Pulse UP CLOSE her with a passion for sustainability. A fourth-generation entrepreneur, Martin has founded four fashion brands that each work to raise awareness about eco-friendly style. She even wrote a book on the subject – Sustainable in Stilettos: A Style-Conscious Guide to Navigating the Evolving World of Fashion and Beyond – that aims to start a conversation about responsible consumption and ethical living in multiple areas of life.

Navigating various industries taught Martin about the importance of the individual. “I realized that I don’t care what you do, I care about who you are while you’re doing it,” she says. This concept, along with the principles of holistic health and sustainability, became the hallmarks of Martin’s approach as an immersive transformational life coach.

Over the last 25 years, she has worked with individuals who seek to overcome a variety of obstacles. “At the end of the day, no matter what you do for a living, if you are not whole, healed and focused, you will never reach the pinnacle of your life,” Martin says. “This is where I come in.”

Martin helps people in all stages of life advance in their personal journeys. “Oftentimes, I coach high-level CEOs who are killing the business game but sacrificing their health, well-being and family to do so,” Martin says. “I also work with families who are so distracted that they haven’t sat down to connect in months or years, and high-performance teens who are asking for more in life but don’t know where to go or who to ask.”

Through all of her coaching, Martin aims to help people better their communication, overcome harmful habits, and help them take their lives to the next level. For families, she even offers an intensive program in which she moves in with a family for maximum impact. Over the course of this three-day program, she coaches her clients – who are typically experiencing transitions such as a graduating child, divorce, or a new addition to the family – in everything from choosing healthy, organic foods to strength and conditioning exercises at a local track.

“I consult with each family member separately before bringing the group together as a whole to discuss specific goals and main concerns,” she says. “This opens up communication, which is the catalyst for a healthy and healed family.”

In her own career, Martin’s personal mission informs her every move. “I truly want people to get the message that they are here for a reason, and they do such a disservice to themselves and those around them by not putting in the work to figure that out. Every day is a gift and you better wake up and create the life you truly want to live.”

Creating Clarity In addition to one-on-one sessions, small group coaching sessions, and video calls, Martin added a curriculum-based program to her repertoire in 2017. Titled Transformation Declaration, the program has since evolved into nationwide seminars for teens and adults, respectively. The goal of her immersive, weekend-long Transformation Tour event is to showcase new ways to approach a variety of life’s challenges.

“I believe there are so many events that are great for

inspiration, but they often lack in equipping the attendants so they can actually begin to transform their lives after they leave,” says Martin, noting that her event differs by providing guests with tangible skills and tools to take away and integrate into their lives.

The hands-on seminars cover topics including mental health, relationships, physical health, and personal growth. The events also feature renowned speakers and step-by-step presentations to help individuals become more authentic and engaged in their own lives, as well as in their communities and families.

Martin herself is familiar with the notion of drawing encouragement from one’s family, her own consisting of her husband of 25 years and two daughters.

“One of my biggest accomplishments in my personal life is raising two incredible girls, who are my teachers every day,” she says. “Inspiration is everywhere – I am inspired by my family, those around me, our world, and life in general.”

And it’s this passion for life that drives Martin to help others become the best versions of themselves, a mission she describes as her calling in life.

“I have experienced so much with so many. It truly humbles me to be a part of so many people’s journeys,” she says. “I am on a mission to create a movement, to do my part to make this world a better place for however long I am here.”

The Perm is Back and Why You May Actually Want One with Color Specialist, Rodney Gentry

Move over perms of the past! The newest hair trend coming out of Europe and New York City is fun, different, and complements all hair types.

If you’re old enough to remember the tight, frizzy perms of the 80’s and 90’s, you may cringe when you hear that perms are making a comeback.

But Rodney Gentry, hair color expert and master stylist, assures us the new perm is worth the buzz.

“No one has done perms since the 1990’s, but the new perm style is completely different,” he says. “These aren’t the tight perms of years past.

Instead, it’s a softer, more modern approach to add volume and movement to your hair.”

Perms are so new, in fact, that not many hair stylists even offer it. Staying ahead of the game, Rodney Gentry is excited to offer texture waves to his clients.

Sometimes referred to as a textured wave or body wave, today’s perms look marvelous with all hair types. “Perms are great for fine hair because there’s

less heat damage. It will also make fine hair look and feel fuller. It’s exciting to see how the perm transforms a person’s hair and, really, their whole look,” says Rodney.

“We use foam rollers for less heat damage. The new formulas are much gentler but every bit as strong, leaving the hair softer and less damaged,” he continues. And if you still have nightmares about the unmistakable odor, never fear! Today’s formulas don’t have that strong chemical-ly smell that forever marked the 90’s. Mikyla Harter upcycles used bottles into luxurious, eco-friendly creations for the home

Mikyla Harter has made a career out of upcycling.

Using her own creativity and a lot of elbow grease, Harter, along with her boyfriend, makes luxury candles out of Champagne and liquor bottles that would otherwise be thrown away through their company, Scottsdale Candle Co. (www.scottsdalecandleco.com).

“We actually bought the company in March 2019 from some friends that started it while working in the hospitality industry,” says Harter, who previously worked at Riot Hospitality Group, the parent company of nightlife venues such as Riot House and El Jefe.

While working in this industry, she witnessed firsthand the high volume of waste that restaurants and bars produce and how little they recycle.

“Not only do I get to create something with my bare hands, but I’m helping the environment by recycling bottles that others don’t,” Harter says. “When you think of it on a grand scale, it seems like a bottle here and there won’t make a difference, but every little bit helps.”

Today, Harter’s house doubles as the place in which her candles are made. To make, she first picks up bottles from local eateries and bars two to three times a week. Next, bottles are cut and ground in her backyard until they are smooth and polished. She then cleans the bottles in her kitchen before pouring a coconut-soy wax blend that’s 100 percent paraffin-free.

The candles are – quite literally – homemade products.

Though there are more than 65 bottles to choose from, they all have one thing in common: a signature scent of grapefruit mangosteen.

“Our signature scent is similar to that of an Anthropologie candle and works beautifully in any room,” Harter says. “It’s a sweet blend of tangy grapefruit, citrus and peach with a hint of vanilla.”

The candles are available at local boutiques and spas, including The Merchantile of Scottsdale, The Village Spa (Camelback and DC Ranch locations), Urbana, and Luv Luxe. And if you have a special bottle you want to commemorate into candle form (such as one from a wedding, anniversary or graduation), Harter takes custom orders – even for herself!

“We bought a bottle of Veuve Clicquot in Paris and drank it under the Eiffel Tower,” Harter says. “We brought the empty bottle home and turned it into a candle, so now every time I look at it, I am reminded of our travels. I love anything sentimental and swoon anytime someone has us do a custom bottle for them.”

Karen Gleason combines her passion for fashion with glee for the greens

As a child, Karen Gleason’s mother taught her how to sew.

“I adored it and actually sewed my own clothing throughout the rest of my childhood and teen years, falling in love with all things fashion along the way,” says Gleason, who moved from her native South Dakota to study fashion merchandising at Arizona State University in 1979.

Upon graduation in 1981, Gleason earned a position with Star of India Fashions, a wholesale apparel manufacturer.

“The job took me to New York in 1987, where I learned from designers around the world,” she says.

“Soon, I was ready to spread my wings.”

She moved back to Arizona in 1989 and partnered with colleague and friend Kay McDonald to launch Regalia Accessory Co., a clothing and accessory company she led for the next 18 years.

“During that time, I also took up golf,” Gleason says.

“It was actually during golf with friends that I got inspired to pursue what would become my life’s passion.”

Tired of the generic, white golf gloves on the market at the time that were geared toward men’s tastes, Gleason envisioned a line of colorful, boldly designed female gloves. In 2002, she brought her vision to a few PGA Merchandise Shows, and by year’s end had a manufacturing partner to help turn her dream into reality.

“I started the company, which I named Glove It, out of my home while still leading Regalia. I even wrote designer Nicole Miller a letter, expressing my desire to license her whimsical designs for my line, to which she agreed,” Gleason says.

She expanded Glove It’s offerings into golf bags, visors, club covers, shoe bags, towels, tote bags, and tennis accessories over the next 10-plus years.

“The business grew so fast that I sold Regalia in 2007 to focus on Glove It full time.”

Glove It (www.gloveit.com) eventually opened an office in Tempe and then a formal headquarters in Scottsdale in 2016. Today, the brand is sold in golf clubs, tennis clubs, resorts and country clubs around the world.

“We have distribution across Europe, Australia and Canada and locally at The Phoenician, Troon North, The Boulders, and Arizona Biltmore golf clubs, among others,” says Gleason, who recently launched a pickle ball collection as well.

Luis Gonzalez believes life is an adventure, and his fashion choices reflect his work hard, play hard attitude.

When he’s not working as a hospital administrator, you can find Gonzalez cycling, skating, snowboarding or surfing in style.

From nine-to-five, Gonzalez turns to subtle and well-tailored looks in neutral tones to maintain a professional appearance at work. “I prefer textures and fabrics over bright colors,” he says. “It keeps me grounded to the Earth.”

With a deep Italian lineage, the avid thrill-seeker is drawn to small, made-by-hand manufacturers where craftsmanship matters.

“Starting with and appreciating quality, handmade clothing is empowering,” he says.

On the contrary, Gonzalez is nearly unrecognizable in board shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops when out of office. “I’m in the wave pool four to five days a week after work and in the ocean every few weeks,” he says.

Drawn to smaller, independent brands, Gonzalez appreciates Birdwell Beach Britches surf clothing — which has been made by hand since the 1960s in Orange County, California – and lesser known, brands like Boglioli, Adolfo Domínguez, Belstaff, Deus Ex Machina, and Etxeondo for their quality construction.

What is your must-have item? Handmade shoes. Cheaply made shoes ruin any effort made. Dress shoes always with a stitched-on leather sole and never a slip-on or loafer with a suit. I also always wear a mechanical watch.

Tell us about your favorite items. Old England, bench-made boots, Italian everything, and wonderful ties. And I love my Belstaff jackets. Nearing 100 years in business, their products stand the test of trends, time and nature.

Where is your favorite place to shop?

I love Deus Ex Machina. It’s an Australian surf-moto-workwear company and the only U.S. store is in Venice, California.

What is your most prized possession?

A pair of pony hair Gucci boots. They were incredibly hard to find, are a great piece that you can dress up and down, and they are so comfortable!

If you could trade closets with anyone, who would it be? Kim Kardashian. She’s got everything from high-end athleisure to Met Gala art. Getting dressed in the morning would be a dream.

How do you transition from work to nighttime? I change my shoe to something less functional and more fashion-forward. I also transition my makeup from natural to glam!

Monique Porras, founder and CEO of The Kempington Group, is all about living fearlessly and giving back to the community Monique Porras’ life has come with its fair share of obstacles, but through it all, her determination to do good, both for herself and in the lives of others, has never wavered.

Porras grew up in the Washington, D.C. metro area. “My parents were phenomenally motivating,” she says. “They helped shape me into the woman I am now, and that has been huge in what I do today.”

Part of that process involved developing the determination and fearlessness that have since become staples of Porras’ personality.

At age 19, while she was in her sophomore year at George Mason University, her mother passed away from breast cancer. “In her final days, she asked that I keep on going and complete college,” Porras says. “This would be hard for anyone to fulfill. But not only did I fulfill what she asked and graduate, but I finished college early.”

A degree in communication with an emphasis in broadcasting under her belt, Porras was a field reporter for a local news channel in Washington, D.C. before making a switch to the radio industry, becoming the youngest national director of marketing for a major media conglomerate. When the industry started to decline, Porras visited a recruiter, without fully understanding what they do in the first place.

“I was offered a job by the recruiting firm on the spot,” she says. “That’s all she wrote!”

But after establishing a successful career in recruiting on the East Coast, Porras decided to take a risk. Putting her fearlessness to the test, Porras and her son, then just a toddler, moved to Phoenix for a fresh start in 2005. As a single mother with no connections in the Valley, things were up in the air for Porras, but she didn’t let that hold her back.

“I channeled my energy into making things work instead of worrying that it wouldn’t work,” she says. “Being a mom is incredibly hard, and as a single parent, you gain survival skills that are extraordinary.”

Porras and her “failure is not an option” mentality thrived in the Valley, and in 2014, she launched an executive recruiting agency of her own, The Kempington Group. With a name derived from her mother’s maiden name (Kemp), the company embodies the integrity and ethics that her parents taught her. Specializing in technology, health care, consumer and creative companies, Porras’ goal with The Kempington Group is to humanize recruiting by making meaningful connections with those in her network, all while maintaining the transparency that sets her and her company apart.

“I hope to show other business owners how to stay humble and also remind them about human kindness,” Porras says.

“As business owners, I strongly believe it is our duty to use our influence to give back to our communities.”

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH An active advocate for philanthropy, Porras believes in paying it forward. A founding member of Phoenix Suns Charities 88, she chaired Slam Dunk – a street party benefiting children’s charities – for four years, an endeavor that earned her the reputation of “sponsorship queen.”

In addition, Porras was asked to chair the 58th annual American Cancer Society’s Evening of Hope Gala, working with a committee she helped build to rejuvenate the event and diversify its support base. “This hit close to home because my mom passed away of cancer. I was determined to make her proud!”

Porras also serves as a Phoenix ambassador for the annual Know Book, which spotlights women in business, and

helped found Know Cares, the philanthropic arm of the Know organization. “I believe in truly and honestly supporting other women,” she says. “My vision was to not just make the book about us, but to utilize the power and influence of each woman to give back to the community.”

This mentality can also be seen in another one of Porras’ philanthropic endeavors – BE Empowered BE Fearless. The mentoring program, held at R E Simpson Middle School in Phoenix, was born out of her desire to do more to lead young girls in the community. Twelve girls are selected out of the pool of applicants to participate in the yearlong program, in which Porras brings in female leaders to mentor on specific topics, including emotional and financial independence, presentation and confidence – subjects she selected based on what she was taught by her own parents.

“To see these girls grow has been indescribable,” Porras says. “It is one of the most fulfilling things I have done. We have all built a real bond.”

And after Verizon donated iPads to the school, Porras figured there was no need to stop there – The Kempington Group donated styluses for each student and teacher. “We presented this in a ceremony right before the holiday break, and I was so touched at the students’ appreciation. I could feel the energy and gratitude – and that’s priceless!”

As the program continues at that first school, and as other Title I schools ask her to work with them as well, Porras hopes that the mentorship and guidance provided through BE Empowered BE Fearless can help teach the next generation that they’re capable of making a change in the world.

“There are so many ways to help others, and every bit helps advance a cause or those in need,” Porras says. “I share all that I do on social media to influence my network to do something more, to get out there and make a difference. I often hear people say ‘I’m too busy,’ but we can all fit something in. Even small gestures of philanthropy have huge outcomes.”

Chrissy and Mitch Sayare

Co-founders of To Be Continued Chrissy and Mitch Sayare are the heart and visionaries behind To Be Continued (TBC; www.tbcconsignment.com), a highend consignment boutique with two locations in Scottsdale as well as one in Dallas and one in Los Angeles that provides services for buyers and sellers of luxury items.

With a master’s degree in business and more than 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur in the high-tech industry, Chrissy has helped set the strategy for TBC’s growth in the ever-changing world of luxury resale. Similarly, Mitch’s guidance – from his 30-plus-year career – has fueled this growth and helped build a foundation of trusted relationships with shoppers and consignors.

“Mitch and I each bring different skill sets to the table. We have very different ways of looking at the same problem and strategizing, which makes us twice as strong,” says Chrissy, co-founder and CEO. Chrissy and Mitch met 15 years ago while living in Boston, and after moving to Arizona in 2011, they opened TBC in 2013. The luxury consignment store combines the couple’s business acumen with Chrissy’s passion for high-end fashion.

“I want to make luxury accessible to all women,” Chrissy says. “I was always a bargain hunter for luxury clothing, believing there’s power in beautiful clothes. Not only do women feel confident wearing great clothes and accessories, but doors open that would otherwise be closed, allowing opportunities to arise simply because we look and feel our best.”

It’s this notion that drives the couple forward in TBC’s expansion.

“We give this business our all,” Mitch says. “These stores are like our children.

We’re building a life together and the business is part of that.”

For Chrissy and Mitch, the joy of working as a team plays a large part in running a business together.

“We enjoy creating something that resonates and adds value to others’ lives,” Chrissy says. “We are doing what we love every single day with a partner we truly respect.”

Claudia and Eric Sieb Principals of The Sieb Organization

After a mutual friend spent two years insisting that Claudia and Eric Sieb meet, the two finally did and hit it off. “Really, we had googly eyes for each other from the first moment. We met in November 2001 and were engaged by February,” Claudia says.

Once Claudia and Eric merged their personal lives, it became clear the next step was to merge their respective marketing companies to create The Sieb Organization (www.sieb.com), which specializes in hospitality consulting and marketing.

“Merging was initially rocky, but we had the same values, ethical standards, and drive, so once the rocks were smoothed out, we found a much better, smarter, stronger, and more client-centric company than we could have ever achieved solo,” Claudia says. “While not every decision is perfect, we have each other’s best interests at heart. This allows us to not second-guess one another and move things forward.”

Sieb’s work is two-fold. In real estate development, Sieb provides branding, marketing, and sales lead generation to developers of mixed-use, master-planned, second home, and resort communities. In hospitality, it provides consulting, procurement, marketing, and distribution services to hotels, restaurants, private clubs, and destinations. Clients include companies such as Sysco, Anheuser-Busch, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

“On our best days, we are creating a great American small business that provides income and stability for employees and incredibly forward-thinking, profitable solutions for our clients,” Claudia says.

While the couple checks in with one another throughout the day, each has their own role at Sieb. “We do bring work conversation home, but rarely conflict,” Claudia says. “Ultimately, our work at Sieb is a vehicle that is recreated every single day. Just like a marriage, if you don’t create it, there is nothing there.”

Eric adds, “We work well together because we work hard, do our jobs, and don’t quit. We balance work and our personal lives by staying optimistic, developing good habits, and maintaining a sense of humor.”

Dr. Janice Johnston and Dr. David Berg challenge the status quo of today’s health care industry by putting people and the businesses that employ them first to efficiently deliver the best care to the most people.

Created by the couple (along with former Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson) in 2013, with Janice as medical director and David as the president, Redirect Health (www. redirecthealth.com) differs from the traditional health care system by offering easy and truly affordable health care for everyone, allowing both patients and employers to save time and money.

After moving to the U.S. from Toronto, the pair noticed flaws in the American health care system that were contributing to continuously rising costs and poor outcomes for patients. “We saw the potential to build a comprehensive, convenient multi-specialty business," Janice says. “We listened to our customers and heard they wanted things to be easy, and that patients wanted their doctors to be in sync regarding their care plans.”

The couple met during their first week of classes at the University of Toronto in a physics lab. “Over the years, we’ve taken the time to understand what we each need, and then work as a team to accomplish both of our goals together. We both enjoy each other’s differences,” David says.

By streamlining patient care and internal processes, Redirect Health has helped many businesses and families around the country benefit from affordable and accessible health care. “America has the best health care in the world,” David says. “Unfortunately, we have let complexity and excessive price gouging limit our great health care from being meaningfully accessible for so many people.”

It’s this obstacle that Redirect Health – and the couple – are on a mission to change, starting with advice both couples and business owners can use.

“Risk more together, love more together, care more together, and especially, fail more together than the world says is reasonable,” David says.

by Kimberly and Eugene Pak, local businesses, artists, designers, and makers are showcased under a single roof where they can display and sell their products.

Wares include clothing, candles, handmade jewelry, kids’ items, and decor. “It's a modern indoor marketplace to inspire vendors to grow their business and for people to shop and support local,” Kimberly says.

The pair met while working for the same company. “It was love at first sight,” Kimberly says. “We’ve always encouraged each other to pursue our dreams. That’s how the idea for The Merchantile started.”

The couple’s dream for launching their own business became a reality when The Merchantile opened in October 2019.

Eugene’s background in sales and managing large teams and Kimberly’s decade of experience as a pop-up vendor selling repurposed jewelry and handmade scarfs lend to The Merchantile’s success.

“We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, something that’s not like normal retail,” says Eugene, noting that The Merchantile is Kimberly’s vision that she built from the ground up, and that he is there to support her.

The business itself is continuously evolving, with updates and events posted frequently on The Merchantile's social media. “Kimberly is constantly thinking about what can be changed or added to make The Merchantile the ultimate experience for customers and vendors,” Eugene says.

The couple makes use of a schedule to help them keep track of their relationship and their business. “Being in the moment and giving that moment our full attention is the way we try to approach everything,” Kimberly says.

Matt and Olivia met through their mutual love of travel on a home-sharing website, in which they learned they lived down the street from one another. They became friends and stayed in touch between moves and career changes. “We reconnected while I was on a cross-country bike tour,” Matt says. “I stayed in Arizona for sweet love.”

This love translates into their business, too. Cloth & Flame has built trusted relationships with private landowners, historic buildings, and other spaces that allow them to not only share these precious areas with guests, but to – through each event – provide passive income to landowners without changing or developing their property.

“Hospitality and connection are the root of our business. We are trusted by many companies and individuals during some of their most important moments,” Olivia says. “Delivering incredible, connective experiences is very important to us and our team.”

The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is a celebration of horses – and so much more. The 10-day event, taking place Feb. 13-23 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, will include dynamic competitions, educational seminars, and family-friendly activities.

Since the inaugural show in 1955, the event has become a staple of Arizona’s culture.

“Over the past 65 years, the show has grown from 50 to over 2,400 horses,” says Taryl O’Shea, executive director of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona. “The Arabian horse has a large audience, as they are the oldest and most versatile horses in the world. The event attracts over 300,000 people.”

and events with more than $3 million in prize money for the winning horses. In addition to the competitions, this year’s show will offer an array of unique events and activities.

“We work to make this an exciting, affordable and fun family event,” O’Shea says.

Attendees will be able to meet an Arabian horse, take a tour of the barns and show grounds, do crafts, participate in contests, take a pony or camel ride, and more. On Feb. 21, guests will receive free admission to the evening performance for Family Fun Night, and on Feb. 18, Military Appreciation Day will include free admission for veterans, members of the military, and their families.

goods abound at the shopping expo, where more than 350 exhibitors will showcase jewelry, clothing, art, boots, saddles, and gifts. For a bite to eat, stop by the international cuisine court and check out one of the 50 diverse food vendors.

“The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show donates money to charities we feel make a difference in the community,” O’Shea says.

“Each year we give away over $100,000.”

The 2020 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show will benefit several local charities including Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge, Horses Help, Scottsdale Community College, Youth for Troops, and March of Dimes.

Celebrity Game Night will honor baseball legend Luis Gonzalez while raising funds for Treasure House

Celebrity Game Night offers the unique opportunity to engage in friendly competition with some of Arizona’s most admired sports figures while supporting a worthy cause. The annual event raises funds for Treasure House, which provides an accessible, supportive and safe living environment for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Treasure House started as the vision of former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner and his wife Brenda, who were inspired by their son Zachary.

“The third Celebrity Game Night will be the biggest and the best since our inception,” says Laureen Tanner, chief executive officer of Treasure House. “The event’s popularity has increased significantly over the past few years, and this year will feature even more celebrities, games and surprises, as well as some great prizes and auction items.”

Last year, more than 600 people attended Celebrity Game Night to honor the Arizona Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald, with the event raising more than $300,000 for Treasure House.

This year, Celebrity Game Night, which will take place at Scottsdale Hangar One, will honor former Arizona Diamondbacks player Luis “Gonzo” Gonzalez for his impact on and off the field. As an icon for the Diamondbacks’ World Series win in 2001, Gonzalez has also been an advocate for a number of charitable causes, including the work of Treasure House. The evening will pay tribute to Gonzalez while giving guests the opportunity to play games like giant Jenga and air hockey with well-known names.

Celebrity Game Night guests will enjoy elevated ballpark fare and libations, a silent and live auction, and entertainment by Dizzie Ramsey. Guests who purchase VIP tickets will have early access to the event and a special reception with Warner and Gonzalez.

“Celebrity Game Night is a unique experience for guests to mingle with celebrities, participate in games, and give to a great cause,” Tanner says. “The event is one of the most engaging and interactive charity events in the Valley.”

The Beverly on Main At first blush, this swanky mash-up of a gastropub and cocktail lounge with rich woods, antique novels and candelabras throughout seems like it should be in Los Angeles or Chicago. Yet, it is nestled along the art gallery-lined Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale.

The food menu offers shareable items and upscale salads, flatbreads and sliders, but the cocktail program is where The Beverly shines with its signature and classic options as well as “Flexin’ Cocktails,” which are libations with ultra-premium and limited-edition spirits ranging from $50 to $500. www.beverlyonmain.com.

Confluence Back when Binkley’s was hidden away in Carefree, Brandon Gauthier served as its chef de cuisine under Kevin Binkley. Brent Artman creates intricate designs with heat and copper

Visual artist Brent Artman uses flames to create colorful hanging art and wall clocks out of copper. A Scottsdale native, he has always been drawn to the visual arts.

“When people ask why I became an artist, I jokingly tell them it’s because my last name is Artman, so I felt a little obligated. But really, art has been a form of therapy for me,” Artman says. “When I was younger, if I would get sad or stressed about something, I would make art. I would be so focused on what I was creating that I would forget whatever I was worrying about.”

Each of Artman’s pieces are one-of-a-kind. His favorite piece to create, called Burst, resembles feathers and has a Native American feel. “I’ve made it several times and probably haven’t made it the same way once. I’m always finding some way to change it slightly to make something new,” he says.

Before working with flame, Artman dabbled in spray paint art and filled notebooks with detailed pencil drawings. While still in high school, he apprenticed at an auto body shop, learning the ins and outs of auto body paint. Today, he uses an automotive clear coat – a trick of the trade he learned from this experience – to seal all of his pieces and prevent the copper from oxidizing further.

“My biggest artistic influences are my teachers, Skip and Racheal Matthews. Skip has been flame-painting for over 30 years,” Artman says. “I stumbled upon the art form while exploring online and thought it looked cool. I took Skip’s class in Arkansas, and I was hooked.”

Creating copper flame art is a hands-on, continuous process that can take anywhere from two to six hours. First, Artman grinds and cleans the copper so that it shines like a new penny. He then heats the copper until it’s dark gray, which signifies the metal is extremely hot and ready to work with.

“Once the copper is about as hot as it can get, I begin laying out my design using a unique oxidation technique developed by Skip. I can add color to the piece or remove it depending on how much oxygen I use in my flame,” he says. “Because the color is determined by the heat of the copper, I have to do all my colors in layers starting with the hottest and going down from there as the piece cools off.”

Stacie J. Stephenson, DC, is known for many things, including being a recognized physician and lecturer on regenerative, functional and natural medicine; champion of holistic, patient-centered care; and philanthropic force behind a wide range of charitable causes. Having spent 15 years in private practice, Dr. Stacie, as known by friends and colleagues, serves as the chair of functional medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. She also is vice chair of the board of directors for Gateway for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization that for nearly three decades has been funding early phase clinical cancer trials at some of the world’s most renowned institutions. It is her commitment to improving quality of life for cancer patients that guides Dr. Stacie’s leadership of one of Scottsdale’s newest and most meaningful fundraising events – Vino con Stelle.

Now in its fourth year, Vino con Stelle is Gateway for Cancer Research’s second signature fundraising affair. For more than two decades, the organization has hosted the annual Cures Gala near its headquarters in Chicago. 2020 MERCEDES-BENZ GLB The all-new compact SUV joins Mercedes’ expanded offerings of utility vehicles

The GLB is joining Mercedes’ SUV lineup for 2020, slotting between the smaller, urban-inspired GLA and the larger, less streamlined GLC. Visually, the GLB forgoes the popular swooping look in favor of a classic, upright boxy shape, designed to give this small SUV – with dimensions about the size of Honda CR-V – an interior that’s surprisingly roomy.

It’s offered in configurations of either two rows for up to five passengers or three rows for up to seven passengers, with standard frontwheel drive or optional 4Matic all-wheel-drive. It’s the first vehicle in the segment to offer three-row seating, though it does have limited room – even Mercedes concedes that the third row is best left to passengers under 5 feet, 6 inches tall.

As expected, the cabin is lavishly appointed, with superb build quality. A pair of 7-inch screens that house the infotainment system span the instrument panel. Most functions can be accomplished with voice commands by saying “Hey, Mercedes,” similar to Alexa or Siri voice assistants. The interior is smoothly and richly adorned with sleek dials and soft-touch materials. Heated or ventilated seats, as well as leather upholstery,

are available for an additional charge.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers 221 horsepower. It’s connected to an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual shift mode, helping it go from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. Programs include Eco/Comfort, regular driving mode, and Sport, the preferred setting.

The power is more than adequate, with plenty of reserve for two-lane highway passing.

The ride is composed, with confident cornering and handling and precise steering and braking.

The quietness of the cabin, even at highway speeds and on rougher pavement, is impressive.

Overall, the GLB exceeds expectations.

And while the base price is certainly affordable, the list of options is, as with all Mercedes products, quite extensive. Checking the boxes for desirable features like a panoramic sunroof, Sirius XM radio, wireless charging, upgraded wheels, driver assistance, and AMG trim packages quickly ups the MSRP to more than $55,000. Even at that, it’s likely the German automaker will have little trouble selling all the GLBs they can make.

The snow-capped mountain paradise is a quintessential romantic winter escape

For those seeking a Rocky Mountain high unlike almost anything they’ve experienced before, consider a visit to Vail with someone special. Located just two hours from Denver, Vail is home to the largest ski mountain in Colorado (and the third largest in the United States), as well as some the most awe-inspiring views, tastes, sips and experiences in North America.

Vail Mountain, the epicenter of the region, boasts more than 5,300 acres of skiable terrain. Snuggled at the base of the mountain range are three small Alpine villages – Vail Village, Lionshead and Golden Peak – each with its own ambiance and charm and all just a short walk from one another.

As the largest, Vail Village is known for its shopping, galleries and nightlife. Just a 10-minute walk (or two-minute free shuttle ride) from Vail Village is Lionshead, which is closed off to vehicles and looks like a scene out of a dreamy Charles Dickens novel. It boasts a massive ice rink as its centerpiece and features several upscale dining options. Then there’s Golden Peak, a five-minute walk from Vail Village and the smallest of the villages, known for its views of the nearby ski slopes for those who prefer to cozy up and watch the winter sports versus taking part the entire time themselves.

While walking along the village’s heated streets, don’t miss Gorsuch, Arriesgado Clothing Company, and Avalon Clothing Company, each with the perfect combination of glitter, glam and couture. And for art lovers, galleries abound – Vail International Gallery, Raitman Art Gallery and Vail Village Arts are all home to plenty of coveted works of art.

Culinary Chops The culinary scene in Vail, both in the villages and on the mountain, showcases some of the pastoral dishes Colorado is known for in addition to chef’s tables, steakhouses and internationally influenced options. Those who prefer a more intimate setting should try Game Creek Restaurant, widely considered one of the most unique romantic dining experiences in the state, which is located in a private mountain chalet and only accessible via gondola or snowcat. There, enjoy either a four-course, fixed-price menu using locally sourced cuisine or a five-course chef’s table option that changes weekly.

If you’re seeking views of the mountain, there’s no going wrong with Gessner, which is situated along an idyllic creek. The menu features local trout and cured meats as well as pasta and extensive vegetarian and vegan options. Mountain Standard, a rustic tavern that’s a popular choice for its gastropub-inspired fare, is the only restaurant in the area that cooks over an open wood fire.

Can’t decide on a trail? There are a bevy of guided tours and private experiences, including snowmobiling, available based on your preferences, desired views, experience level and age group.

Vail also has three terrain parks with designated areas of jumps, hits, ramps, banks, boxes, jibs, rails, half-pipes, quarter-pipes and more. And there are both nighttime ski opportunities and evening snow bike treks for those looking for a sunset ride, many limited to those 21 and over.

Romance & Relaxation Those who want to up the romance quotient can look into the scenic gondola ride for skiers and non-skiers alike, book a snowshoeing experience that explores the mountain’s pristine forest together, or book a day as a couple at one of the area’s award-winning spas.

One of the newest spas happens to be found in one of the hottest places to stay – the Grand Hyatt Vail, a 285-room luxury ski-in/ski-out resort, sits at the base of mountain on the banks of Gore Creek and offers guests a private ski lift and personal ski valets. In addition to the aromatherapy steam room, the salt sauna, and the Swiss jet showers inside, the spa leads to the resort’s creekside, coed infinity pool, hot tubs and fire pits. Arizona’s own Heart Wood Cellars fuses love into its wine

Located in Verde Valley, Heart Wood Cellars is true to its name, producing wine full of heart – quite literally, as its owned by husband and wife, Valerie and Daniel Wood.

The Woods first met as peers, working in California at a Fortune 200 company in the mid-1990s. Her career took the couple, who married in 2001, from California to Chicago to Tokyo.

And though Valerie was from Michigan and Daniel from Hawaii, when the time came for them to move back to the states in 2009, Arizona was already in their hearts.

“I visited Sedona and the surrounding Verde Valley in the 1980s and felt so passionately about area that I proclaimed I would one day make it my home,” says Valerie, who purchased a vacation home in Cornville in 2003.

When she suggested retiring at her Cornville vacation home, she did so delicately, expecting Daniel to want her to at least consider the island paradise of his native Hawaii. But to her surprise, Daniel (who had family in the area), jumped at the chance to settle there.

“We went from a metropolitan city with millions of people to a farm-filled, unincorporated area of about 3,000. Within a week, all of our senses came alive in the fresh air and the star-filled nights,” Valerie says. “And after we reacclimated to U.S. life, we wanted to take on a retirement adventure together, choosing winemaking after becoming members at several local wineries and taking a riverboat wine cruise in France with fellow Page Springs Cellars and Pillsbury Wine Company members.”

At this time, early in 2013, Yavapai College was launching its first viticulture and enology program, the Southwest Wine Center. The Woods enrolled in the program’s classes, eventually becoming members of the school’s first graduating class.

“Through the program, we helped plant 13,000 acres of vines. We also developed a business plan for our own winemaking endeavor,” Valerie says. She and Daniel put the plan into action in 2015, launching Heart Wood Cellars. “Our vision was to create bold, complex, elegant red wines from 100% Arizona-grown grapes.”

Each of their first five vintages won gold or silver medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Their 2016 Heart Wood Cellars Tannat was also an AZ Central Arizona Wine Competition winner.

Today, Heart Wood has nine total wines, ranging in price from $38 to $48.

And while the gold medal award-winning Tannat and Love are sold out, both of the San Francisco Wine Competition silver medalists – the 2016 Petit Syrah ($48) and 2016 Heart ($44), a red blend with petite sirah, syrah and tannat – are available. They also have two port-style wines, including a white port with notes of honeysuckle and apricot called Diamond Reserve ($40), and ruby port with blueberry, dark plum and dark chocolate called Ruby Reserve ($40).

The Woods, who previously only sold their wines to wine club members or by referral, have now opened sales to the general public and are currently offering their full slate of 2016 and 2017 vintages.

Meritage, an urban tavern, which is among the signature eateries at JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, is well-known for its elevated take on American classics, craft cocktails and microbrews. What’s lesser known about the eatery, however, is that every menu item has at least one ingredient sourced from a regional farm. Take chef Dejan Djukic’s light and bright Prosciutto & Peach Salad ($17). It features sweetly rich white figs, both red endive and a curly endive called frisee, pomegranate seeds, and juicy peaches, all from McClendon’s Select Organic Farm in Peoria. Djukic then adds salty prosciutto, buttery marcona almonds, creamy Humboldt Fog goat cheese, and a tangy pomegranate glaze made using cane sugar and fresh pomegranate and lemon juices. Ride the flavor wave with Culinary Dropout’s Full-on Boat Drink

When Fox Restaurant Concepts’ beverage manager Aubrey Mansene closes his eyes, his mind often drifts to one of his favorite places: Hawaii.

“There’s not much better than cruising along the Hawaiian Islands, lava flow cocktail in hand,” Mansene says. “So, I set out to bring that feeling to the Valley.”

Enter the Full-on Boat Drink ($12), available at Culinary Dropout.

“Not wanting a carbon copy of the lava flow, which is a pina colada and strawberry daiquiri hybrid, I tested a variety of tropical flavors and spirits that best suited the overall island vibe.”

He settled on Sailor Jerry, a spiced rum made from a blend of Caribbean rums, as the base spirit.

“We then combine it in a shaker with draft ice cubes and a tropical mix that we make ourselves from coconut milk, coconut syrup, strawberry puree and pineapple juice, which explodes with zest and freshness,” says Mansene, who also adds lime juice for acidity and balance.

Once the ingredients are shaken, the coconut milk activates, resulting in a flavorful foam. After the foam appears, all the contents are poured into a short hurricane glass.

“We garnish it with a house bramble, which is a muddle of blackberries, raspberries and simple syrup made fresh daily, as well as a light sprinkling of mulling spices to play up the spice in the rum,” Mansene says.

To Mansene, it has all of the base flavors of the lava flow, taking great care to use only fresh ingredients, and transports those who drink it onto some boat, somewhere fabulous.

My parents could not cook. Subconsciously, I think it inspired me to get into the kitchen and see what it was all about. Thankfully, my grandmother and aunt – both amazing cooks – were there to help.

How did you get your professional start?

I began formal training in my native France in the 1970s, graduating from Le Cordon Bleu and Ferrandi Paris. I then worked at Potel et Chabot, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, La Tour d’Argent, and Les Ambassadeurs.

What brought you to the United States?

The Four Seasons Hotel Chicago recruited me in 1988. I worked there as well as at several country clubs and as Boeing’s executive chef before moving to Arizona in 2004, where I took on the executive chef role at Silverleaf Country Club. Then, my husband Roman and I opened our first restaurant, Vogue Bistro, in 2006.

Tell us about your first venture.

Located in Surprise, Vogue is a quintessential French bistro. In 2017, we were approached by an investor who wanted to purchase it, with an interest in taking it national. Health issues helped us make the decision to sell it, just as they helped us make the decision to open Sapiens in 2019.

How so?

At that time, I was dealing with a thyroid disorder and Roman was suffering from chronic gastritis. Doctors wanted us on long-term medications, so we decided to educate ourselves about how food could help heal our bodies.

The paleo lifestyle saved our lives.

So that brings us to Sapiens?

It sounds crazy, but I developed a menu of sumptuous French cuisine without using creams, sugars or gluten. I even developed a recipe for exquisite paleo bread. This menu is meant to treat one’s body with respect without sacrificing on flavor. Both those living with conditions ranging from diabetes to celiac disease and those who want to eat good food that’s good for you are welcome.

Duncan’s Trading Company

For four generations, the Duncan family has sustainably farmed more than 150 types of fruits and vegetables at its West Phoenix farm.

To give an idea, there are currently 18 varieties of summer and winter squash, 18 varieties of lettuce, 15 varieties of tomatoes, eight varieties of melons, and six varieties of beets. Owner Pat Duncan is also the visionary behind the Farmer in the House dinner programs around the Valley each year, wherein Duncan’s partners with seven chefs for a series of wine dinners that best showcase the spring harvest. Danzeisen Dairy

Each of the happy heifers at Danzeisen Dairy in West Phoenix, where a cow nutritionist visits monthly to monitor the quality of the alfalfa-based feed, lives a life free of hormones and is safely milked twice a day. The resulting products, which come in glass bottles to preserve freshness, range from whole, skim and reduced fat milks to creamer and naturally flavored milks, including an orange varietal that tastes exactly like a Creamsicle. The term “handmade” takes on a whole new meaning when describing the bounty that bakers, farmers and ranchers across Arizona craft each day. From fruits and veggies to dairy and baked goods, here is a look at some of our favorite local purveyors and where to taste their phenomenally fresh products around town.

This Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce 2019 Business of the Year is Arizona’s only working olive farm and mill. Located on a whopping 100-acre farm with more than 7,000 olive trees, Queen Creek Olive Mill produces dozens of different oils, balsamic vinegars, tapenades, sauces and – of course – olives. The mill has also gotten into the health and beauty industry with its Olivespa studio, which makes all-natural, plant-based skin care products. Those who visit the mill can tour and sample both the beauty products and the edible offerings. Plans are also in place to eventually add a restaurant, brewery and boutique hotel on-site. Crow’s Dairy

This fifth-generation family dairy was once bestknown for its Grade A (legal) raw cow milk.

But in 2008, Crow’s Dairy made the move to start raising Nubian dairy goats. Though they

Across its two family-owned and -run farms in West Phoenix, more than 100 varieties of organic vegetables and fruits – notably 20 varieties of citrus – are produced, along with dates, honey, bee pollen, and soaps. One of the only USDA-certified organic farms in Arizona, residents come in droves to the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market (Saturdays through May 15) and to the year-round Uptown Farmers Market every Saturday to purchase McClendon’s produce direct. Their fruits and vegetables are also regularly used in dishes at more than 80 restaurants and hotels across Arizona. Mediterra Bakehouse

started with just 25, the results were stunning, and today they raise and regularly milk more than 300 goats in order to fulfill their hundreds of orders for goat-based milk and cheese products statewide. The hay and grain the goats feed on are non-GMO, and the farm does not use any growth hormones or prophylactic antibiotics on the animals. The owners of this bakery hail from a small community in Chios, a Greek island known for its bakers who use a combination of brick ovens, hand-kneading, and slow fermentation to craft their full-flavored breads. The owners brought this tradition to the states, including the use of a traditional stone hearth and techniques that result in their signature “dark crust,” which is standard at European bakeries and has caramel and nutty notes. Among the 20 to 25 flavors available at any time are rosemary olive oil, Parmesan pepper, and chili cheddar loaf. There are also plenty of other baked goods made daily, including pastries, croissants, cookies and brownies. Noble Bread

THE FRENCH CONNECTION Zinqué opens at Scottsdale Fashion Square as a bistro, cafe and wine bar all in one

In late 2019, Zinqué (pronounced zin-kae) made its debut in the new luxury wing at Scottsdale Fashion Square. The opening marked the first location of the Parisianinspired bistro, cafe and wine bar outside of California, where it was founded in 2012 and quickly grew to five bustling locations in Venice Beach, West Hollywood, Newport Beach, Downtown Los Angeles, and Downtown San Diego. Lauded for its design, decor and menu, the concept is known as a favorite of celebrities, including the Kardashian family, Gigi Hadid and Justin Bieber.

Zinqué was born out of a desire to create a place mimicking a European cafe where guests can start their day with a cup of coffee and end it with a glass of rosé, anchored with a simple yet delicious menu.

In line with that, the 2,930-square-foot Scottsdale restaurant is open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

Visually, the space has a chic industrial design created in homage to the original location in Venice Beach. It is also open and airy, complete with a fireplace, wooden tables, concrete walls, and stunning wrought-iron windows. In addition to the

main dining room, there is a bar, a semi-private dining and event space, and an outdoor patio with a 30-foot oak tree adopted from nearby Moon Valley Nursery.

The menus are eclectic and modern but also include classic French options.

For breakfast, one can get Parisian staples like a freshly baked prosciutto and Gruyere croissant as well as tartines, which is what the French essentially call bread with sweet or savory toppings. At brunch, French favorites like quiche and croque monsieur are some highlights.

Lunch includes a variety: rotisserie chicken, a grass-fed burger, smoked salmon carpaccio, soups and salads. For dinner, there is an impressive charcuterie and small bites menu as well as entrees, including moules frites, steak frites, lasagna and seafood. Additionally, there is a flatbread and tartine menu, which feels like a more daring version of what one might expect on a local bruschetta board menu.

Think smoked salmon and tomato options, but also tuna tartare (a must-try!) and salade nicoise as toppings.

Of particular note is the bistro’s approach to sourcing, importing bread from the famous Poilâne Bakery in Paris; craft coffee from world-renowned La Colombe; and Époisses cheese from Burgundy, France, as well as its wines.

With an emphasis on organic and sustainable wines, the comprehensive wine list is thoughtfully selected and focuses on independent producers from around the world. The globally inspired bar program has apertifs and innovative craft cocktails, while an ample beer menu – with options on tap and by the bottle – has selections from North America and Europe.

Zinqué is open Sunday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
