r. Robert McCulloch, owner of Horizon Eye Specialists, is a man with a mission, along with the love of his life, Camerone Parker: to help as many people as possible see with 20-20 vision by the year 2020. With almost 30 years as an ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery, McCulloch has a record of being the first in Arizona to perform new procedures such as the Tecnis Multifocol IOL, an implantable contact lens used in cataract surgery. McCulloch was influenced to become an ophthalmologist both by his own need for glasses at the age of 10, and by his grandmother’s diagnosis of breast cancer by her ophthalmologist when he noticed a small tumor in her retina. That tumor was discovered to be a result of her having breast cancer. McCulloch’s business mission is “Eye care like no other.” Starting as a one doctor practice in 1999, McCulloch has expanded his center to 9 doctors and over 100 employees in 2017.

“As a patient, you know you will always come first,” he says. Among its unique offerings, Horizon Eye Specialists is the only private practice in Arizona to have a neuro ophthalmologist, Dr. Angela Herro. This is critical for Parker, who in 2017 will also be the new face for Horizon Eye Specialists new marketing campaign. Parker, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998, has ocular complications because of MS. McCulloch will perform a refractive lens exchange individually for each eye, and Parker will have a two-day recovery period each surgery. “Because of Robert’s expertise, knowledge and know-how of his whole staff, I’m given the hope of not losing sight in the future,” Parker says. Horizon Eye Specialists offers the latest, state-of-the-art cataract, LASIK and corneal transplant surgical procedures including Symfony IOL, CustomVue iLASIK, PRK Laser Eye Surgery, KAMRA, Intraocular Contact Lens, and Tecnis Multifocal IOL. Cataract surgeries are performed at Eye
Surgery Center at the Biltmore with expert nursing and technical staff who specialize in eye surgery. “Additionally, we have a trendsetting optical eyewear division,” McCulloch says. For 2017, a new procedure for patients over the age of 50 is refractive lens exchange with Symfony Intraocular lens, like the one that Parker will receive. Another new procedure is corneal crosslinking, an in-office treatment that stabilizes and repairs warping of the cornea caused by keratoconus., radial keratotomy (RK), and other refractive surgery complications. This procedure may prevent a more complex surgery such as a corneal transplant in the future. McCulloch and Parker have donated personally to charities and community service. Parker is a past recipient of AFP’s National Philanthropy Day Volunteer of the Year Award. For more information, contact 602.Horizon or www.horizonlaservision.com 18325 N.
