The Perm is Back and Why You May Actually Want One with Color Specialist, Rodney Gentry

Move over perms of the past! The newest hair trend coming out of Europe and New York City is fun, different, and complements all hair types. If you’re old enough to remember the tight, frizzy perms of the 80’s and 90’s, you may cringe when you hear that perms are making a comeback. But Rodney Gentry, hair color expert and master stylist, assures us the new perm is worth the buzz. “No one has done perms since the 1990’s, but the new perm style is completely different,” he says. “These aren’t the tight perms of years past. Instead, it’s a softer, more modern approach to add volume and movement to your hair.” Perms are so new, in fact, that not many hair stylists even offer it. Staying ahead of the game, Rodney Gentry is excited to offer texture waves to his clients. Sometimes referred to as a textured wave or body wave, today’s perms look marvelous with all hair types. “Perms are great for fine hair because there’s

less heat damage. It will also make fine hair look and feel fuller. It’s exciting to see how the perm transforms a person’s hair and, really, their whole look,” says Rodney. “We use foam rollers for less heat damage. The new formulas are much gentler but every bit as strong, leaving the hair softer and less damaged,” he continues. And if you still have nightmares about the unmistakable odor, never fear! Today’s formulas don’t have that strong chemical-ly smell that forever marked the 90’s. With today’s curls, there’s less upkeep, leaving more time to show off your gorgeous hair. The loose, natural curls are achieved with varying sizes of perm rods. By using larger rods, Rodney creates a loose, soft bend in the hair. And the rods are not set in perfect rows like they once were, offering more than one finished look—anywhere from the big, corkscrew curls to looser, beachier waves. “It’s no longer a one-size-fits-all approach in a world where individuality

matters. You can choose to have really defined curls or just a bit more movement and wave,” Rodney explains. “There are techniques where it can be straighter in the top half with the bend in the hair starting at mid-length and ends.” Rodney suggests people put aside the image of the stiff curls from decades past. “Today’s perms allow your curls to move in the wind for a beautiful, natural look.” Schedule your appointment with Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios 480.639.2000 or visit www.rodneygentry.com.

It’s hard to believe we’re entering the sixth month of varying degrees of shutdowns – and certainly drastic changes to the way we all live. Now more than ever, we could all use stories that bring us hope, ones that showcase the good that surrounds us. One such story is that of Mesha Davis, the CEO of Arizona Foundation for Women who is on our cover. In just a few months, Davis will commemorate four years as CEO, while the foundation will celebrate its 25th anniversary of advocating for and empowering women. It’s evident from Davis’ story (page 32), that she has always led a life of service and seeking out ways in which she can make a difference in the lives of others. Her dedication to creating change certainly inspires me, and I hope it inspires you. And speaking of change, if you could use a change of scenery, you’re not alone. While I’ve continued to stick close to home, last month I took a day trip to Sedona – talk about a breath of fresh air! A friend and I had a socially distanced Sedona experience, taking my dog on a hike, picnicking at Oak Creek, and coaching my dog through swimming for the first time (definitely a proud dog mom moment!). This reminded me just how much there is to explore in our great state, and that you don’t have to travel far to have fun and feel refreshed. To that effect, we have three Northern Arizona spotlights in this issue: nearby weekend getaways (page 42), wining and dining in Cottonwood (page 68), and an ultra-luxe mountain retreat in Flagstaff (page 65). Of course, you can still find fun closer to home and at home. While quarantined, have some friendly competition with your family over a game of cornhole with customized boards (page 63), or if you find yourself in the kitchen a lot more than usual, spruce up your cooking game with some stylish gadgets and accessories (page 50). Tired of cooking? Plenty of restaurants are offering gourmet goodies and family-size fare to go (pages 38 and 40). We’ve also got the lowdown on a new beer growler delivery service (page 38). Venturing out? Our top picks this month include: savoring a special seasonal dinner in an underground wine cellar (it’s a chilly 57 degrees; page 38); checking out two new outdoor artworks (page 40); and taking a step back in time at The Dash Inn Tribute Room, a reimagined version of The Dash Inn, originally open from 1967 to 1994 in Tempe and now right at home in Old Town Scottsdale (page 82). I hope this issue has a little something for everyone, whether you’re staying at home, venturing out, or finding yourself somewhere in between. As the dog days of summer continue, stay safe and be well. ll the best, A Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea onnect with us! LISA ROBERTS HELPS CLIENTS NAVIGATE THIS HOT HOUSING MARKET

THE REAL ESTATE market is extremely hot right now. Home prices are regaining—and surpassing—pre-COVID levels and won’t be decreasing any time soon. Super low mortgage rates are motivating buyers, increasing demand. Realtor Lisa Roberts is with her clients every step of the way in this quickly-changing housing market. “I give my business 120%. I stay educated on exactly what is happening in this crazy real estate market week by week. By doing so, I’m able to show value to past and current clients. In any market, follow-up and staying in communication with clients is so important,” says Lisa. As one of the top Realtors in Scottsdale, Lisa’s proven track record speaks for itself. Recently recognized as 2020 Top 10 Realtors for Volume sold in Arizona by REAL Trends, she devotes her full attention to helping clients buy their dream home or sell quickly at the highest possible price. Additionally, as one of the top 35 Realtors in the state, Lisa is Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist (CLHMS) and Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), some of the highest credentials available to real estate agents. Her proven track record speaks for itself, having received national recognition in 2015 from Realtor Magazine as 30 Under 30 and been named 40 Under 40 for the past four years by the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors’ and SEVRAR. Newly elected, she is honored to now serve on the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors Board of Directors for the next two

years. Additionally, Lisa has been listed as one of the Top 20 Realtors by the Phoenix Business Journal, and named three times as one of the Top 16 Women Realtors for units sold. With today’s market, Lisa cautions that there is no slowdown in purchasing homes. In fact, current data shows that the real estate market is actually going up despite the COVID-19 pandemic. And current trends point to a continuing rise in the housing market. “If you’ve been thinking about selling your home, now is the time to list it. For buyers, don’t wait. There is no COVID-19 discount anymore; it is still very much a sellers’ market,” Lisa says. However, for buyers, it’s still a great time to buy because interest rates are at a historic low. There is a surge in demand, with double the number of contracts over $500k than there was this time last year. “This is an excellent time to list your house due to a shortage on the market. Inventory is extremely low right now. There is a total surge in the housing market and it’s a frenzy. Buyers are outnumbered by sellers many times over so sellers have the upper hand in this market,” Lisa says. Contact Lisa Roberts for a free consultation on how the market is doing in your specific neighborhood and what she can do to achieve top dollar. 480.232.3291 or lisa@lisaroberts.com.

Annexus co-founder Don Dady’s life comes full circle with the launch of his vineyard

Don Dady grew up in the vineyard-dotted Russian River Valley of Sonoma, California. His early days, however, were neither those of wine and roses nor those of privilege, as one might assume. “My mom and dad were the salt of the earth, though we struggled financially,” Dady says. “Dad, a World War II veteran,

and mom, a Great Depression baby, believed in hard work and an honest day’s pay, even if only pennies.” In 1983, Dady became the first member of his family to graduate high school and the first to go to college. “I enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College, eventually earning

Pulse UP CLOSE my way to San Diego State University in 1985,” Dady says. “I wanted the chance to break the chains of poverty in my family through education.” Dady made a connection in college that would change the course of his life and, indeed, start him down a path to breaking those chains. “I fell in love with finance and economics, in large part thanks to professor Nye,” says Dady, noting that it was Nye who taught Dady to think about things “seven apart.” “We had to present investments in class to him,” Dady says. “For each, we had to find seven compelling things that set the investment apart. If we couldn’t, it didn’t meet his standard to buy.” The concept of finding these seven advantages that set something apart, which Dady shortened to seven apart, became a guidepost for Dady from that moment on – well, almost. “Funny enough, I learned to apply seven apart after my first real job out of college,” Dady says. “I became a financial planner for a national company out of Los Angeles. After a year, I realized the business wasn’t seven apart, so I quit and moved back to Northern California to rethink my life.” There, he found a marketing position with Reagan Holding Corp., which focused on insurance. The startup was a pioneer for its time. “This was still the early 1990s, so for an insurance company to invest in cutting-edge technologies and embrace a more maverick mindset to help people was almost unheard of,” Dady says. “Definitely seven apart.” The company hoped to do $40 million in sales its first year; it did $186 million. The sales success ultimately led to the company’s failure as it was declared insolvent. This financial challenge was quickly followed by the founder’s unexpected passing, which caused the company to change ownership. “Seeing the writing on the wall, I knew I needed to start planning ahead. Given my background in finance, I taught myself our pricing model software and began pricing products,” Dady says. The founder’s widow took note of Dady’s enthusiasm and approached him about developing a product and brand. “Together, we created Legacy Marketing Group in 1993,” Dady says. “Over the next decade we grew to 550 employees and generated over $15 billion in sales.” Dady would ultimately lead the company for nearly 14 years before moving to Scottsdale to found Annexus in 2006. “Annexus, which means to connect together in Latin, is the byproduct of a conversation at my 40th birthday party with my good friend Ron Shurts,” Dady says. “We got to talking about how we could not only help people with retirement products but go far beyond this by bringing together innovative minds in finance, economics, technology and insurance,” Dady says. Since launching nearly 15 years ago, Annexus has generated over $45 billion in sales. They’ve also made a mark in the community through financial support of nonprofits, notably serving as the title sponsor of the Annexus Pro-Am at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Making a Dream a Reality With his business flourishing and three children either in college or college-bound – which was itself a dream of his – by 2018 Dady was looking for a new adventure. “I always dreamed of owning a vineyard back in my hometown,” says Dady, an avid wine collector. The stars finally aligned in 2018 when he discovered Stags Ridge Vineyard in Napa – just over the hill from Sonoma – was for sale. “And what a vineyard it was! The winery was comprised of two parcels: one that sits along the famed Silverado Trail and one that sprawls across the top of Atlas Peak, a prominent summit and coveted growing area,” Dady says. Coincidentally, the two parcels are seven miles apart. It was kismet. Dady and his business partner, Jason Kyle, moved quickly, purchasing the vineyard, investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure, and bringing on a world-renowned winemaker. “We were lucky enough to bring on Andy Erickson as our winemaker,” Dady says. “Andy is one of the most talented winemakers in the region, notably working with Stag’s Leap Winery, Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle.” When it came to naming the vineyard, Dady says, there was only one choice: Seven Apart. The vineyard will release its first cabernet sauvignon in September, with plans for three more reds in early 2021. A tasting room will also open in the next 12 months. “My parents planted the roots for my success just over the hill from this vineyard,” Dady says. “And now I’ve planted roots, quite literally, for generations of our family to come.” Seven Apart will be available to order online in September. BUILDING COURAGE

Lupe Camargo begins term as Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council board chair

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Growing up, Lupe Camargo’s mother was a driving force in her life. “She always made me feel courageous and strong,” says Camargo, a first-generation American who graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1985 and went on to earn both a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Arizona State University and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin while working her way up in the fields of both marketing and finance. When Camargo became a mom herself in 1999, she set out to empower her daughter, Olivia, as she had been by her own mother. “In kindergarten, Olivia wanted to become a Girl Scout, and while I was never one myself, we were both excited for the fun she would have, especially what I thought were the ‘three Cs’ she would experience: cookies, camping and crafts,” Camargo says. “I soon learned this only scratched the surface of what being a Girl Scout actually means.” Three years later, Camargo became Olivia’s troop leader, overseeing everything from STEM activities to community service projects. “This led me to understand Girl Scouts is very much about three other Cs: courage, confidence and character,” Camargo says. “The Girl Scouts gave my sometimes-shy daughter a safe space and judgement-free zone to explore who she is and the difference she wanted to make in the world.” Inspired by her daughter’s growth through the program, Camargo joined the Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council advisory committee in the mid2000s to support the Council’s goal of making Girl Scouting more accessible to all girls in Arizona, including the Latina community. In 2007, Camargo joined the organization’s board of directors, volunteering on fundraising, advocacy and, of course, Girl Scout Cookie program initiatives for more than a decade. In April, she became the Council’s board chair and will serve a three-year term supporting more than 11,000 Girl Scouts in the region, including over 3,100 across greater Scottsdale alone. “I want do my part to give girls in Arizona a safe space, one where they will always belong, while building their courage, confidence and character and encouraging them to take actions that make the world a better place.”

MEANINGFUL MENTORING Daniel Folk connects people with expert life coaches through Hundred Life Design

BY KAYLOR JONES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Daniel Folk, the founder and CEO of online life and career coaching platform Hundred Life Design (www. hundredlifedesign.com), is on a mission to inspire others. “I’ve always been fascinated by motivation and the power of the human mind,” says Folk, who has a master of education in counseling psychology. He initially brought his passion for people to the corporate world, where he worked in organizational development at the Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. “My job was to transform dysfunctional groups internationally into high-performance teams,” he says. “There, I observed that the difference between successful and unhealthy teams was often one or two team members, unhappy with an area of their personal lives and allowing it to adversely affect the team.” Folk found himself questioning whether the position was the best fit for him. “As a corporate consultant, I could fly in and assess a problem but never really fix it. I wanted to create a way for people who are dissatisfied with something in their lives – be it their physical well-being, career, or personal relationships – to be able to do something about it.” With this in mind, Folk started Hundred Life Design, which connects individuals with expert life coaches. “There are many paths to self-help. Traditional therapy deals with something in the past that’s hindering us in the present. Motivational speakers, books and courses offer general advice that resonates in the moment but can do little to affect long-term change,” Folk says. Coaching, in contrast, revolves around helping aspirational people take their lives to the next level. Coaches matched through Hundred Life Design utilize video calls to help people strategize the best way to approach their goals. Potential clients can match with a coach using Hundred Life Design’s site by inputting preferences (such as cost and areas of concern), reading about each coach, and booking an appointment. Folk ensures that each of Hundred Life Design’s coaches (there are over 50) has a proven track record of success and can help their clients turn advice, wisdom and insight into action. In other words, they must walk the talk, a phrase Folk also employs as the name of his podcast, which introduces listeners to the “unconventionally successful” as yet another form of motivation. In the end, Folk has discovered his calling. “I hope I can inspire people to be successful in whatever way they define that for themselves.” So Scottsdale! August ‘20

Pulse HIS STYLE

FLAIR FOR FASHION

From the clothes he wears to the homes he designs, Bobby J Rogers is surrounded by style BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

Scottsdale-based interior designer Bobby J Rogers is known for creating distinctive spaces that are both modern and warm with coastal and industrial elements. When it comes to interior decor and his personal sense of style, Rogers’ expertise is unparalleled. “The design words I live by are ‘every detail matters,’” he says. As the owner of interior design studio BJR Design Haus, Rogers aims to be intentional, memorable and distinct in his style and draws inspiration from photographer Gray Malin. He’s not afraid to push the envelope on patterns, incorporating hues of blue, green and white with floral and camouflage prints while maintaining a less is more approach. One of Rogers’ tips? “Do not overstyle yourself; let your personality be the star!” he says. The trendy designer’s must-have item is a neutral blazer that can be dressed up or down simply by changing shoes and pants – easily taking his look from day to night. Being in the creative industry, Rogers understands that fashion and interior design go hand in hand. “My career and my style run completely in tandem,” he says. “Clients know that what you see is what you get with me in my work and my style.”

Who would you trade closets with? Zac Efron and Jake Gyllenhaal. They both have timeless, classic approaches to fashion. What is the most prized possession in your closet? My custom tux from my wedding. It still fits like a glove five years later, and I have been able to wear it to black-tie charity events and to one of my favorite events to attend in Chicago, the James Beard Awards. What is your wardrobe like on weekends versus weekdays? Weekends call for tanks, flip-flops and Lululemon while workdays include a polo shirt, a blazer with a print or pop of color, and fun shoes.

STYLE THAT SPEAKS Kim Ho makes a statement through fashion and philanthropy

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY

These days, Kim Ho often dresses in athleisure wear, but that doesn’t stop her from keeping a colorful, confident wardrobe while at home. As a corporate development officer for Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation, Ho spends her days building partnerships with companies throughout Arizona to support the life-changing work of the hospital. While leading community giving initiatives, Ho prefers an unfussy yet elegant style that often includes a midi dress, sandals or block heels, and a statement vintage bag from one of her favorite local shops. “I’m a huge fan of vintage and consignment shopping, where you can get amazing, one-of-a-kind pieces,” says Ho, noting her favorite consignment stores include Vintage by Misty, Fashion by Robert Black, and My Sister’s Closet. Influenced by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz thanks to her gorgeous resort style, Ho gravitates toward Everlane for timeless sustainable basics, Zara for modern and trendy pieces, and Mara Hoffman for statement wear. One of her key pieces of fashion advice is to add a belt to a dress. “Not only is it a great way to create shape and add an additional style element, but a knit dress in a classic shape and color always looks stylish, refined and effortless,” Ho says.

What are your favorite colors, patterns and styles? Floral and bold prints as well as bright, tropical colors paired with classic or vintage shapes. What is the most prized possession in your closet? I have a marigold silk floor-length trench that was my mother’s and had it altered to knee-length for everyday wear. It reminds me of my mom and is, of course, one of a kind. What would someone say if they looked at your closet? Wow, you have a lot of clothes – but also that it’s so well-curated!

Mesha Davis leads Arizona Foundation for Women into its 25th year of advocating for and empowering women throughout the state

“I learned from experience that any small act of kindness goes a long way no matter someone’s age, race, gender or social status,” Davis says. “I believe one person, in one moment, can change someone’s life.” This belief and the qualities that shaped her from the start have led Davis on a path of serving others throughout her career – most recently as CEO of Arizona Foundation for Women, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in November. Growing up in Milwaukee, Davis saw her mother as a pillar of strength and inspiration who led with a unique example, despite the fact that their family was poor. “My mom was really strict and always wanted the best for me,” Davis says. “She always tried to instill values. She’d say, ‘Just because we’re poor doesn’t mean we have to look and act poor.’” Davis’ mother loved fashion and makeup and stressed the importance of a neat appearance, good posture and appropriate behavior. While her mother was an introvert, Davis was quite the opposite. “I was the one in the family who always made noise, and it was always for a good reason. I was always sticking up for something, or if I didn’t feel something was right, I’d stand up.” By the time Davis went to high school she wanted to be a lawyer. “On our days off of school I would go downtown to the courthouse and sit in on cases,” says Davis, noting this was back when people were able to do this, before security measures were in place at courthouses. “I thought I wanted to be an attorney because I always argued with people and I would not back down.” However, realizing she wanted to be free to express herself without the containment of a courtroom, Davis decided to go in a different direction. During her senior year of high school,

34

So Scottsdale! August ‘20

Davis had a schedule that allowed her to volunteer in the community once per week. She helped watch children and serve snacks at a child care center before switching to another similar center, not realizing at the time that it served children who had been sexually assaulted or abused. “I had a 5-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her father speak, connect and open up to me when she wouldn’t to anyone else,” Davis says. “I have to believe that I opened a piece of that little girl’s heart by exuding a sense of trust and comfort where she felt safe, could open up, and be herself with me.” Experiences like this stayed with Davis throughout her education – she studied business administration at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and earned a Master of Science in management from Cardinal Stritch University – and well into her career. After college, Davis and her now-husband, Doug Carter, moved to Minneapolis, where she held multiple leadership positions at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee, eventually opening a $16 million, 114,000-square-foot YMCA; a charter school; and a child care center. She later moved on to serve as vice president of development with The Family Partnership, which provides counseling, education and advocacy for children and families living in poverty. As gratifying as this work was, both Davis and Carter were tired of braving the cold and had their sights set on sunnier skies. The couple moved to Arizona in 2011, where Davis became the chief development officer for Southwest Center for HIV/Aids, leading a $10.1 million capital and capacity campaign to open The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness, which, as part of the Southwest Center today, brings health care providers and LGBTQ+ support organizations together under one roof. EMPOWERING WOMEN After five years, another transition was on the horizon. “I felt like I had run my course at Southwest Center for HIV/Aids, and it was time for someone else to take it to the next level,” says Davis, who came across

an open position with Arizona Foundation for Women. “Instantly, I said, ‘I have to do this.’ I used to volunteer for the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, where I helped start one of their giving circles and assisted in the process of attainting a grant.” Davis was passionate about the mission of Arizona Foundation for Women: to advance the status of Arizona’s women through research, advocacy and philanthropy to ensure their safety, health and economic independence. She knew this position was meant for her, and she was right. She will celebrate her fourth year as CEO in October. Over the course of the foundation’s 25 years, it has helped women by addressing the barriers that confine them. A key way of doing so has been through changing polices and laws to create equal opportunities for women. “We believe when a woman’s power and potential are respected, children and families are healthier, economies are stronger, and communities prosper,” Davis says. “Our work has included advocating for continued funding for women’s programs at the city, county and state level; improving the enforcements and punishments for domestic violence perpetrators of women; and advocating for equal pay at the state Capitol.” Creating change such as this first begins by better understanding the obstacles Arizona women face today, something that the foundation’s Status of Women Report addresses. Davis helped release the first report in 2016, and it is currently being updated for a fall release, helping guide the foundation in affecting real change. Alongside its advocacy efforts, Arizona Foundation for Women is focused on building its endowment to support women in the community. Funds are also raised through its annual awards luncheon, which was held virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our first honoree was former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and every year after that, she allowed us to name the award after her,” Davis says. Subsequent honorees have included Mary Elizabeth “Tipper” Gore, Marian Wright Edelman, Barbara Bush, Madeleine Albright, and Goldie Hawn.

NEW INITIATIVES Under the guidance of Davis, at the end of 2019 the foundation launched a new membership campaign: Arizona Foundation for Women Membership. With this membership, donors can decide how much to donate and how often and in what ways they participate in events and volunteer opportunities. Additionally, in October, Arizona Foundation for Women will launch the SHE Leads program. Fittingly, SHE stands for the foundation’s three pillars: safety, health and economic empowerment. Davis equates this women’s leadership development program to Valley Leadership – but for women only. “SHE Leads will develop women personally, professionally and philanthropically,” Davis says. “It will provide participants with an introduction to foundational leadership skills, exposure to and mentorship from experts, and the opportunity to create positive change by developing and enhancing skills needed to empower not only themselves but their communities.” As Davis leads Arizona Foundation for Women into its next 25 years, she is dedicated to continuing its legacy of creating change to uplift and empower women throughout the state. Her goals include creating systemic change for women and generating enough support for the foundation so that it can continue to help women, even during unforeseen circumstances such as the coronavirus. Above all, Davis remains committed to the cause of helping women, as it’s a deeply personal – and gratifying – one. “I not only love working for Arizona Foundation for Women, I live, eat, sleep and breathe the mission,” Davis says. “Hearing the stories of women, like my mother, or seeing them transition from experiencing pain, hurt, a sense of hopelessness, and a constant struggle, or being consumed with insecurities and low self-esteem, to gaining healing, hope, being free of struggles, and being confident and empowered, warms my heart and is what gets me ready to take on each day. “I only wish that everyone could find comfort and joy in what they do. There’s no better feeling than giving and serving.”

GROWLERS TO GO This one is for the beer lovers – a new subscription service, Growly Delivers, recently launched in the Valley. A locally owned company, Growly Delivers works similar to the milkman business model of decades past, but instead of gallons of milk, you receive growlers of beer. The service is simple: Sign up for a weekly subscription online, choose the beer you want, and the fresh brews are delivered to your doorstep on Thursdays. When your next delivery is fulfilled, the empty growlers are picked up to be cleaned, sanitized and reused. You can also choose between standard and high-tech growlers; the latter keeps beer fresh for up to two weeks. Currently, brews from PHX Beer Co. are available, with plans to add other local breweries soon. Pricing varies based on beer and growler selected. www.growlydelivers.com.

REDUCE & RECYCLE

If you walk or run along the Arizona Canal in Old Town Scottsdale, you’ll notice a new type of unexpected art: artist-designed recycling and trash bins. These colorful bins, collectively known as Traceries, dot the south bank of the canal between Goldwater Boulevard and Scottsdale Road and feature a double layer of steel sheet metal, most of which is made from reused materials. The top layer showcases intricate tracery designs that are powder-coated in bright contrasting colors with elements like butterflies, desert flowers and hummingbirds. Designed by local artist Mary Neubauer, the bins are functional public art that add pizazz to an otherwise ordinary object – and hopefully inspire others on how to reduce their footprint. www.scottsdalepublicart.org.

While the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) remains closed due to COVID-19, a new outdoor artwork is on view for passersby to safely enjoy. With a goal of encouraging a sense of togetherness, the work – called Untitled Gestures – can be seen at the main entry of SMoCA and along an interior wall in the museum. The exterior text reads, “and a shared longing connects us” while the interior text reads, “across an ever shifting terrain.” The creator, local artist Kristin Bauer, hopes that it speaks to the collective level of uncertainty and the emotional complexities felt globally during this time. The artwork is on view permanently at SMoCA. www.smoca.org.

DAY TRIPPIN’

Quick weekend getaways in Northern Arizona

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Itching for an adventure? Beat the heat with a quick escape up north to one of these sensational in state-destinations.

Camp Verde Just about an hour from the Valley, Camp Verde is bursting with activities for every taste, from boating, hiking and biking to wine tasting and wild animal watching. Both Verde River and Fossil Creek run though the region, and there are guided and self-guided tours available to explore each by foot, on horseback, by bicycle, or via kayak courtesy of Verde Adventures, A Day in the West, and many others. There are also are nine designated wilderness areas in Camp Verde, including Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area, which features the state’s oldest protected and primitive landscape; Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness Area, which has natural pools and seven cliffs to descend; and West Clear Creek Wilderness Area, a canyoneering playground for experts with waterfalls and rugged cliffs. Wine lovers are also in luck as Camp Verde is home to Salt Mine Wine, a boutique winery just east of the Verde Salt Mine, one of only three prehistoric salt mines in Northern Arizona. The family-owned operation specializes in growing Italian grape varietals such as malvasia bianca and sangiovese, and currently offers wine tastings (reservations recommended) as well as bottle purchases. If a walk on the wild side – as in wild animals – is more your speed, don’t miss Out of Africa Wilderness Park, which currently offers two ways to enjoy the park: by foot (Wednesday through Monday) or by car (Tuesday only). There are several cozy RV and camping parks in the area for those seeking to stay longer than a day, as well as vacation rentals, ranches and even a casino – Cliff Castle Casino recently opened a new hotel tower.

Village of Oak Creek The Village of Oak Creek is just south of Sedona. It is often considered “the start” of Sedona when driving in from the Valley because it marks the some of the most picturesque hiking and mountain bike trails in the region, notably Cathedral Rock Trail, Bell Rock Trail, and Courthouse Butte Loop Trail, all of which have parking for anyone not staying in town. If you’re thinking about staying overnight or for a weekend, nestled into the Village is the Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock. The final phase of the resort’s three-year, $12 million renovation was completed in 2018. The update included the launch of a new restaurant concept called ShadowRock Tap + Table, the addition of both an on-site hiking concierge and an adventure concierge, and a one-of-a-kind outdoor boot camp fitness area called the Warrior Pit. Each of the resort’s 219 rooms has been redesigned,

and the lobby has been completely reimagined from the ground up. In addition, Hilton Sedona – along with all Hilton Hotels worldwide – has partnered with RB, maker of trusted home and industrial cleaning brands Lysol and Dettol, on its new CleanStay program. Through it, Hilton builds on its rigorous cleaning standards to provide complete peace of mind for guests. Beyond staying and playing, dining is a delicious adventure to be had in the area. Two of James Beard House-featured chef Lisa Dahl’s restaurants are in the Village: Cucina Rustica and Butterfly Burger. Cucina Rustica features exquisite Italian and Mediterranean fare while Butterfly Burger, a dark and sultry space reminiscent of a modern lounge, features 10 stunning burgers as well as small bites and craft cocktails. The Juniper Bar & Grille at Sedona Golf Resort as well as Pago’s Pizzeria & Italian Cuisine are also best bets.

Jerome Everyone likes a good comeback, and there are few cities in Arizona that have had a comeback like Jerome, which is located 5,200 feet high, atop Cleopatra Hill between Prescott and Flagstaff and just a few miles from Cottonwood. Over 100 years ago, Jerome was not only the third largest town in Arizona and the state’s largest producer of copper, gold and silver, but also among its naughtiest – given its ratio of bordellos and bars to churches, it was nicknamed the Wickedest City in the West. The party died, however, when the last mines closed in 1953 and the city became a ghost town. According to the Arizona Office of Tourism, in fact, it was once the largest ghost town in the West. Over the past 20 years, however, it has come back to life, this time as a thriving arts and tourist community with dozens of restored historic buildings, specialty stores, galleries and restaurants. Thanks to Nellie Bly Kaleidoscopes, Jerome also boasts the largest collection of kaleidoscopes in the world. Some must-see galleries while “up the hill” include Cody DeLong Studio, featuring fine oil paintings of the Southwest; Pura Vida Gallery, home to crafts and jewelry from over 100 local artisans; and the Jerome Artists Cooperative Gallery, which features 30 to 40 local artists’ works at any given time. Jerome is also home to Maynard James Keenan, both the frontman of rock band Tool and a local winemaker. One of his tasting rooms in the heart of Jerome, Caduceus Cellars, is near many of the best spots for cocktails and food, notably Haunted Hamburger; Grapes Restaurant & Bar; and The Clinkscale, a soonto-open hotel, bar and grill being developed by the award-winning and locally owned Haunted Group, which operates Haunted Hamburger as well as notable restaurants throughout Cottonwood and Verde Valley. DRAWN TO THE DESERT Jeanne Bonine cultivates hope with larger-than-life, nature-inspired paintings

Jeanne Bonine, a watercolor and oil painter with more than 50 years of experience, conveys a sense of strength and beauty through her award-winning paintings of nature. After living in Minnesota her whole live, Bonine discovered limitless inspiration in the desert. “When I moved to Arizona, I got out of the car and thought, ‘This is where I belong.’ It really felt like I had lived here all my life,” Bonine says. “I’m a 26-year cancer survivor who was given six months to live, and I moved out here during the course of my treatment. I watched the desert and saw that even with the heat and lack of rain, everything still grew. It was an inspiration to me.” Bonine conveys those same feelings of hope and strength through her oversized works, which inspire people to view the world in a different way. While she paints wildlife, still lifes, landscapes and skyscapes, her favorite subjects are lush florals, at once romantic and realistic. “I always go back to the flowers,” she says. “I used to grow them with my mom when I was a child. It’s a comfort, like eating mac and cheese!” Bonine, who always felt called to create, is primarily selftaught. After graduating from high school, she began her five-decade career in art with a six-night course in oil painting. After over 10 years of working with oils, Bonine taught herself how to work with watercolors, her work becoming looser and more colorful. This shift in both medium and style came when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “My work went from pastels to strong, layered colors,” she says. “They became bigger and larger-than-life as I continued to survive.” Around this time, Bonine also began writing prose to accompany her paintings. “The titles of my works became more important, but it wasn’t enough. I felt like I had a lot of messages to tell people, so I started writing prose.” Bonine’s paintings and prose are featured in her coffee-table book, Inspirations of Timeless Beauty, which she states is one of the proudest accomplishments of her career. Her work can also be viewed and purchased online (www.jeannebonine.com) and at her gallery in North Scottsdale, which is open by appointment for private studio tours. In addition to past exhibitions at Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg and Phippen Museum in Prescott, Bonine is also a regular at the annual Arizona Fine Art Expo, where she takes great pleasure in speaking with those who have been touched by her paintings. “My work should make people feel good and peaceful, and give them a sense of joy and beauty,” Bonine says. “Beauty feeds your soul. I’m honored when people tell me my work does that. It doesn’t get any better than that, period.”

Permanent Make-up

& BEYOND Microblading

BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

2020 GENESIS G90

The standout luxury sedan has a smooth ride and a tranquil cabin BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS 2020 Genesis G90 Base price: $72,220

Genesis, the luxury vehicle division of Hyundai that spun off as a separate entity in 2015, makes seriously competitive luxury vehicles with attractive prices. The flagship Genesis G90 sedan is one of the most comfortable, calm-inducing vehicles on the market – a ride in the reclining rear seat could even soothe troubled sleepers. The G90 has undergone a significant refresh for 2020. Inside, the quilted nappa leather upholstery, open-pore wood, and overall look is exceptional. The impressive new 12.3-inch touch screen has a simple, straightforward interface. Other features include soft-close doors and Smart Posture Care, which uses your physical profile data to ergonomically calibrate an ideal seat position. You’ll also find acoustical glass, triple-sealed doors, sound deadening material, and active noise cancellation. The same opulence can be found in the exterior design, such as the subtly glamorous head and taillights with Genesis’ G-Matrix inner detailing, which was inspired by the light reflected by a cut diamond. This diamond pattern is continued on both the intricate grille and 19-inch wheels. The G90 is available in two trims: the

64

365-horsepower V-6 Premium and the 420-horsepower V-8 Ultimate (tested here), both with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Choosing a G90 is simple: select V-6 or V-8, rear- or all-wheel drive, one of seven exterior paint colors and three interior colors, and that’s it. The sedan doesn’t have an endless list of expensive packages like most luxury brands. On the road, the G90 is buttery smooth and imperceptibly quiet. The driver can select from Comfort, Sport, Eco or Custom drive modes. The one drawback is the lack of sporty driving dynamics. Still, the handling is composed and predictable with no surprises on sharp curves. The G90 has an impressive list of active safety features, like lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, and cameras that switch on when the turn signals are applied, showing either side of the vehicle on a screen between the instrument cluster. There’s much to like about the G90. The luxury car market is all about image and perception, and while Genesis is a newer brand that’s still earning its stripes, the G90 more than delivers on its promise of a comfortable, high-end sedan.

MOUNTAIN ESCAPE

Set among a towering forest of ponderosas, Flagstaff’s Pine Canyon is a peaceful, luxurious retreat

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF PINE CANYON

Nestled along a private golf course surrounded by majestic ponderosas as far as the eyes can see, the Pine Canyon private luxury home community in Flagstaff (www.pinecanyon.net) is known as a “refuge for the human spirit” – a serene mountain retreat to help you reconnect and rejuvenate. Until recently, only residents and their guests have had the chance to experience the magic within Pine Canyon’s gates. Last year, however, the exclusive community opened up to allow nonresidents the chance to enjoy its unique brand of high-country living, courtesy of its Discovery Experience package. “A few years ago, we built what we call our club cabins,” says Deana Keck, vice president of marketing and culture at Pine Canyon. “These fully furnished, 3,600-square-foot cabins were initially meant to allow our residents additional space to host their visiting friends and family.” The cabins, which allow access to all the services and amenities afforded to residents, quickly gained popularity, especially in the Valley. So much so that the team decided to explore the idea of opening them up to the public.

“Each two-story cabin – just feet from our 35,000-square-foot clubhouse – has four bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, a full kitchen, a working fireplace, dining and living areas, and multiple outdoor spaces,” Keck says. “Depending on the size of the party, we can make the entire cabin available, or partition off one- and two-bedroom options as well.” Once booked, a concierge reaches out to learn more about your group, including music and wine preferences as well as housekeeping needs. To help customize each group’s stay, they also review the amenities available, of which there are many, including: a 19-hole golf course, which has the extra hole to allow for players to settle any final bets; a full-service spa offering manicures, pedicures, facials, massages and body treatments; multiple playgrounds for children; three pristine pools, including one featuring a slide and water toys; a kids’ club with staff; multiple dining venues; a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio machines, weights and classes; hiking and biking paths; and both private parks and multiple ponds. The Discovery Experience package starts at $1,500 (based on a two-person stay) and includes two-night accommodations as well as access to all public areas, lounges, pools, the fitness center, and the kids’ club. In addition, also included are a chef’s dinner at the clubhouse or an in-suite dining experience, a spa treatment for each guest, continental breakfast daily, and a personal tour of the property. “We also offer a complimentary round of golf to our Discovery Experience guests,” Keck says. “As a bonus, we have full-time caddies from May to October, and also offer the increasingly popular GolfBoards to help with the pace of play.” Immersive and impeccably designed to make the most of one’s time on property, the Pine Canyon Discovery Experience is a true respite from the Valley’s heat and all the stresses of the outside world. COZY COTTONWOOD Wine, dine and cool down in Northern Arizona’s historic gem

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

One hundred years ago, Cottonwood was proclaimed the “biggest little town in Arizona.” And all these years later, the now-City of Cottonwood still retains all its small-town charm while boasting some big-time attractions. Just 90 minutes north of the Valley and nestled between Prescott and Sedona, Cottonwood offers the perfect respite from the daily grind without having to leave Arizona. The city’s entertainment epicenter is Old Town Cottonwood’s Main Street, a walkable wonderland for couples, girlfriend getaways, or wine-tasting weekends. Upon reaching Main Street, it is hard to miss The Tavern Hotel, thanks to its signature bright yellow Adirondack chairs on each room’s balcony and 6-foot fire pit just outside of the lobby. Once upon a time – in the 1920s to be exact – the building was the town grocery store. Thanks to a sweeping reimagining, and significant investment, by Verde Valley couple Eric and Michelle Jurisin, the independent boutique hotel is among the most charming in the Southwest today. The hotel, which just added a beautiful pool complex and fitness center, features 41 standard rooms with hardwood floors, stone-tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers, granite countertops, vessel sinks, high-end fixtures, 50-inch flat-screen TVs, plush bedding, and spa-quality hair and body products. And if looking for something special, consider one of the hotel’s private cottages, the 200-square-foot dog-friendly Tavern Dog House studio, or one of the two penthouses, notably the signature Tavern Penthouse. At 2,300 square feet and with a 180-degree panoramic view of downtown, the Tavern Penthouse is a three-bedroom, 2 1/2-bathroom slice of heaven. In addition to all the standard room amenities, this stunning space features a gourmet kitchen, both formal dining and family rooms, two separate fireplaces (one inside and one out), and two private patios. A bonus: All rooms come with extra perks in the form of free breakfast and cocktail vouchers as well as wine-tasting coupons for select local places just steps away.

Hit the Town Before eating, drinking and being merry, however, consider working up a sweat or taking in a little local culture first. Just about 100 yards from the hotel is the Jail Trail River Walk. Named for its proximity to a river rock building that used to be the Cottonwood jail (and is now a lovely art gallery), this relaxing and mostly shaded hike wanders 1 1/2 miles along Blowout Creek. The trail traverses a rich riparian habitat and wildlife is plentiful, especially birds. Birding, in fact, is quite popular in the area. Dead Horse Ranch State Park, which is less than 2 miles from Jail Trail and The Tavern Hotel, boasts over 100 species of birds as well as

68

So Scottsdale! August ‘20

other wildlife including river otters, gray foxes, and whitetail deer. The area is also a popular fishing spot, with both largemouth bass and rainbow trout. For history buffs, also plan a stop at the Tuzigoot National Monument, which is only 3 miles from Main Street on the border of Cottonwood and its sister city, Clarkdale. Occupied more than 900 years ago by the Sinagua, these awe-inspiring ruins are perched atop a cliff 120 feet above the Verde River and were somehow built two stories high despite any modern technologies or tools. Both the main outside areas and public picnic areas are currently open, and the museum expects to reopen, pending COVID-19, later this year.

Wine & Dine Once back on Main Street, prepare your taste buds for an Arizona adventure – especially as Cottonwood is known as the Heart of Arizona Wine Country. Currently, there are four working Arizona vineyards with wine-tasting rooms along Main Street: Carlson Creek Vineyard, Pillsbury Wine Company, Arizona Stronghold Vineyards, and Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room & Osteria. Each offers wine-tasting flights – some with cheese plates, small bites, or even full menus – as well as locally made wines by the glass and bottle. Many also have games, live music, and ample patio space to allow for socially distanced tastings. Joining them along Main Street are also Burning Tree Cellars, which has small-batch, boutique wines that aren’t mass marketed; Winery 101, which features wines from the husband-and-wife winemaker owners; The State Bar, an indoor-outdoor bar with yard games and both local wines and beers on tap; and Small Batch Wine and Spirits, a family-owned tasting room with both boutique wines and craft beers. Among the copious bars and tasting rooms are galleries, boutiques and antique shops. Of particular note is Hart of AZ Art Gallery, which takes pride in showcasing jewelry, clothing, pottery, glass art, clay art, sculptures, photography, and paintings solely from Verde Valley artists. And then, of course, there is the food. Oh, the food! There is a long list of can’t-miss spots while visiting. At the top of the list is Crema Craft Kitchen & Bar and its cheery patio shaded by vibrantly colored umbrellas. Beyond the atmosphere, Crema has some of the best brunch dishes (and cocktails) in all of Arizona. Pizzeria Bocce Patio Bar is another gem. Boasting two giant patios, one with a fire pit and the other with bocce ball courts and picnic tables, the indoor-outdoor restaurant makes everything from scratch, including its award-winning pizzas. For a bit of a finer dining experience, don’t miss Nic’s Italian Steak & Crab House, a traditional Italian steakhouse one might find in New York or Chicago. And finally, after a long day of sightseeing and sipping, opt for The Tavern Grille. Located under The Tavern Hotel Penthouse – so it is just steps from any room at the hotel – it features elevated comfort foods and a massive cocktail menu, as well as local and regional beer and wine. WINE TIME

8 Years in the Desert is a “just right” red blend with an Arizona connection

Are you familiar with the Goldilocks Principle? As one might guess, it is named in homage to the children’s fairy tale. Though its exact meaning differs by discipline, it essentially focuses on how things must be “just right” to elicit the desired result. The principle has a double meaning for famed winemaker Dave Phinney. The former University of Arizona pre-law student – who planted his first experimental grapes in Tucson in the mid-1990s with the help of an agriculture professor – first made a name for himself as the architect behind The Prisoner. The jammy, balanced red blend made primarily from zinfandel grapes and sold under his Orin Swift Cellars parent company is often called a viral wine sensation. After establishing The Prisoner label, Phinney sold it in 2008. Due to a noncompete, he was unable to professionally make zinfandel for eight years. And while that might seem like a lifetime, by 2016 as the economy picked up, the time was just right for Phinney to release 8 Years in the Desert through Orin Swift Cellars. This wine is a love letter to zinfandel and starts with the grapes, which are sourced from some of the top vineyards in California, including the iconic gnarly vines at Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma. Given their high level of acidity, they need to ripen longer than most other grapes. This, for some, can lead to myriad issues. Pick them too early, and the wine might end up stemmy or woody in flavor. Pick them too late, and the wine may fall under stuck fermentation, which leads to it tasting a bit spoiled. Committed to getting it just right, Phinney is meticulous during the harvest. He is similarly precise in his blending technique. For 8 Years, while zinfandel is the star, he also infuses nuance and complexity by adding in some syrah, petite sirah and grenache. The resulting blend is then aged for eight months in a combination of old and new French and American oak barrels before being bottled. The full-bodied result, which is 15.6% alcohol by volume, bursts with clear aromas of ripe raspberry, blueberry, and dark sweet plum, followed by black pepper and clove. Upon tasting, expect the blueberry to take center stage along with intoxicatingly luscious notes of black cherry and thyme. The finish is long, with a hint of black tea and definite tannins. The 2018 vintage is on shelves right now, retailing for about $45 at grocery stores and fine liquor stores across Arizona. The label is a bit different – especially in the color palette – than his prior vintage, but both visually depict a desert scene and are analogous of Phinney’s winemaking journey. Perhaps, in fact, they are even a bit analogous of his journey from studying to become a lawyer in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert to his true calling among the vineyards in Northern California. BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO COURTESY OF ROKA AKOR

Saving room for dessert at Roka Akor can be tough with the upscale Japaese eatery’s delectable menu of rare wagyu, sushi and grilled seafood. However, desserts like the Ube Pot de Creme ($10) make saving a little space well worth it. Ube is a sweet purple yam from the Philippines with both a nutty flavor – pistachio, in particular – and a distinct hint of vanilla. It is boiled and then mashed with condensed milk until it has a luscious custard consistency. Once chilled, it is spooned into a bowl and topped with sliced strawberries, blackberries and kiwi. The crowning finish is a delicate, sweet wafer called tuile that Roka chefs make using what looks like tiny beads but are actually Japanese rice crackers called bubu arare. The dessert is plated with banana leaves and colorful edible flowers. Roka Akor, 7299 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.306.8800; www.rokaakor.com. So Scottsdale! August ‘20

SPARKLING SPICE Ling & Louie’s brings the heat with its Kickin’ Kombucha

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

While the dishes at Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill are a modern take on Asian cuisine with a little American flair, the drinks are not. “We flip the script with our beverage program as most of our cocktails are instead Modern American recipes with Asian flair,” owner John Banquil says. Among the most popular offerings is the Kickin’ Kombucha ($11). “Initially, this was to be a vodka-based cocktail,” says Banquil, noting it was inspired by the trend of infusing vodka and then using it in a flavored martini. “But once we began infusing vodkas with dried spicy chili pods, our palates took us in a totally new direction.” Wanting something to complement the chili notes yet still bring its own depth of flavor, the team began infusing tequila, finding Espolon Reposado Tequila responded perfectly to the fiery notes. After infusing the tequila for a week, it is combined in a shaker with lime juice for acidity, pineapple juice for tropical notes, and Tempus Fugit Creme de Banane Liqueur for both sweetness and creaminess. Once shaken with ice and strained into a pint glass rimmed with chili salt, the cocktail gets a few final touches. “We top it with Wild Tonic Tropical Turmeric Hard Jun Kombucha and garnish it with an edible orchid and pineapple leaf,” Banquil says. “Given how on-trend it is right now, many don’t realize kombucha was invented in China over 2,000 years ago.” Bubbly yet smooth – thanks to Wild Tonic’s unique honey base – the final product is tropical and spicy, tickling the taste buds with every sip. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Dana Dumas of Sugar Jam Bake Shop & Bistro

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Dana Dumas is the owner of Sugar Jam Bake Shop & Bistro, which features specialty baked goods as well as comfort foods at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Was cooking your first career? I never planned to be a chef, baker or restaurateur! I studied education and ethnic studies in college, but then worked in planning, buying and merchandising for Toys R Us and then the corporate office for Macy’s in New York City from the late ’90s until 9/11. Then you transitioned into cooking and baking? Nope! My husband and I moved from New Jersey to Scottsdale when my parents decided to retire here in 2002. I spent years working in NASCAR and then in travel planning before becoming a mom in 2010. That made me rethink my busy career, which until then was very corporate and often involved travel. How did you transition to Sugar Jam? In 2011, I made sugar cookies filled with jam for a friend’s bridal shower, and they were a hit. Before year’s end, I was selling them at Phoenix Public Market, and then at events and markets Valleywide. In fact, the entire family pitched in and joined me! By 2014, I’d expanded to several baked goods and outgrew my kitchen. I found our now brick-and-mortar spot in 2013, and because it had a full kitchen, we were able to cook as well as bake. So, Sugar Jam Cookies, as it was known prior, became Sugar Jam Bake Shop & Bistro, opening in 2014. What are your favorite menu items? I’ve been partial to the caramel apple pie, cherry crumb pie, sea salt toffee caramel scone, and sweet potato pie, which is an update to my grandma’s family recipe. Then from our food menus, I love our Parisian-style French toast marinated in Grand Mariner as well as our chicken and waffles. Oh, and definitely the fried catfish! What would we be surprised to know about you? While I noted I became a mom in 2010, I should add that it was to twin boys. Sugar Jam Bake Shop & Bistro, 7950 E. SENSATIONAL SEAFOOD Dive into fresh takes on fresh fish

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY TIM CHOW

Baja Taco de Pescados o Camarones

Spotted Donkey Cantina There is nothing like a proper fish taco, and Spotted Donkey has one of the best. It starts with a choice of fresh mahi mahi that has been beer-battered and fried golden brown or sauteed shrimp. The guest’s choice of seafood is then generously piled into two warm flour tortillas before being topped with crunchy shredded cabbage and a chipotle drizzle. The tacos are paired with Spanish rice, handmade guacamole, and crema on the side. At Boulders Resort & Spa. $18. www.theboulders.com.

Crispy Mango Fish

Malee’s Thai Bistro All of the dishes at Malee’s pay homage to Asian flavors and culture, and the variety of whitefish used in this recipe is a Southeast Asian swai, a type of catfish most often found near Vietnam and known for its mild flavor and flaky texture. It is cooked just enough to give the edges a delightful crunch and drizzled with a sweet, tart tamarind sauce before being topped with a salad of chilled succulent mango, minced red onion, lemongrass, chopped ginger slices, toasted coconut flakes, and lime wedges. $16.99. www.maleesonmain.com.

Ahi Tuna Tartare

Elements Prepared with high-quality ahi tuna flown in from Hawaii, this is the restaurant’s most popular dish. Ideal for summer, it’s refreshing, clean and bursting with Asian flavors. The tuna is seasoned with sambal, sesame oil and toasted pine nuts and served over English cucumber noodles tossed with a light chiffonade of mint as well as house soy sesame vinaigrette. The delicate dish is topped with an avocado mousse and garnished with basil oil and micro cilantro. It’s finished with an accompaniment of a housemade crostini and a togarashi sesame crisp. At Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa. $26. www.sanctuaryaz.com.

Though we may dwell in the desert, far from the sea, resourceful chefs around town don’t let that stop them from creating exceedingly fresh fish dishes. From sea bass to scallops to salmon, there are plenty of light, bright takes on from-the-sea favorites at local eateries. Dig in, or should we say dive in, to nine of our picks here.

Alaskan Halibut

The Mission A sumptuous seafood extravaganza, this dish starts with sustainably-sourced halibut from Phoenix’s own Chula Seafood. Beyond the perfectly cooked halibut, expect a symphony of flavors thanks to the addition of rock shrimp, clams and chorizo. Each element is plated over a bed of bomba rice with smoked tomato. The final ingredient is aji rocoto nage, a spicy sauce that’s almost like a broth served tableside in a pitcher so guests can choose how much they want to use, though it is almost always empty by the meal’s end. $38. www.themissionaz.com.

The earthy, smoky flavors of the cedar and the sweetness of the glaze come together in perfect harmony on one’s palate. It is served very simply with grilled asparagus, so the salmon is the clear star of the plate. $24. www.roaringfork.com.

Grilled Whole Branzino

Zinqué The Euro-inspired grilled whole branzino is meant to transport guests to St-Tropez, France, or Positano, Italy, with its fresh, simple, and light ingredients. The branzino, which is a European sea bass, is stuffed with lemons and earthy herbs, seasoned with salt and pepper, brushed with olive oil, and grilled on the bone until browned and crispy to achieve more flavor and moisture. The fish is served with a fresh lemon wedge and a made-from-scratch chimichurri sauce comprised of shallots, Fresno peppers, garlic, cilantro, parsley, oregano, and olive oil that guests can drizzle on top to their liking. $34. www.lezinque.com.

Miso Chilean Sea Bass

Nori Sushi & Asian Dining Light yet hearty and equal parts cool and creamy with a hint of spice, this entree begins with a generous 8-ounce portion of Chilean sea bass that has been coated and baked in miso paste. The elegant fish is plated on top of airy wasabi mashed potatoes and a trio of sauteed mushrooms, Brussels sprouts and heirloom tomatoes. The eye-catching sauce is a nod to the classic French beurre blanc but has some heat to build depth of flavor. $27. www.noriaz.com.

Hula’s Modern Tiki Take your taste buds on a tropical getaway with this island-style Hapu, a delicate white fish also known as Hawaiian sea bass. Using a combination of fresh lemongrass and special (read: secret) ingredients, it’s pan-fried to order to create a crispy exterior and a light, flaky interior before being topped with an exotic lime-ginger cream sauce and served with a side of slaw and jasmine rice that has a hint of coconut milk. $15. www.hulasmoderntiki.com.

Cilantro & Ginger Crusted Mahi Mahi

Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar A guest favorite, this island-inspired entree starts with fresh mahi mahi that has been seasoned with herbs and spices, including vibrant cilantro and bold ginger. Once seared, the cilantro and ginger create a crispy crust while the inside of the fish stays moist and tender. It is paired with a furikake rice cake, which is made with sushi rice, rice vinegar, scallions and – of course – the popular savory Japanese seasoning, furikake. The dish is finished with a housemade shrimp broth; a trio of sauteed squash, zucchini and carrots; and a drizzle of chili oil. $29.50. www.tommybahama.com.

NOSTALGIA ON TAP

The owner of Old Town Scottsdale’s Brat Haus brings back The Dash Inn

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

Every generation has its Cheers bar – that one place you go where everybody knows your name. It is often without frills, but with enough charm and character to spare. For many, The Dash Inn was that place. Open in Tempe from 1967 to 1994, The Dash Inn’s original owners, couple Hash and Dee Nelson, named the famed concept by combining each of their own first names. For 27 years, they took great pride in their laid-back vibe and quality Mexican cuisine. Today, someone might liken the food to that of Tee Pee Mexican Food or Aunt Chilada’s. While closed for 26 years now, the concept found new life over the past decade after a Facebook fan page popped up to allow former patrons to reminisce and reconnect. Word caught on, and the page eventually had over 3,000 fans. One such fan: Brat Haus owner Dave Andrea. A former employee of The Dash Inn, Andrea actually took over the concept during its final few years in operation. When he saw the outpouring of support and love for The Dash Inn, he put pen to paper on helping it find new life.

Enter The Dash Inn Tribute Room. Andrea chose to recreate the concept on the Brat Haus’ expansive property in Old Town Scottsdale. If familiar with the space, it is divided into three distinct areas: an indoor dining room, an outdoor beer garden and ample patio, and an indoor sausage emporium. Since most Brat Haus guests opt to sit in the beer garden, the 800-square-foot dining room provided the perfect space to bring The Dash Inn back to life. Now open, expect nearly the same menu as before, thanks to Andrea saving all the restaurant’s original recipes as a keepsake, including its famed margarita, available for $4 per glass or $12 per pitcher. Other items fans of the original concept will recognize include nachos with green chiles ($4.50); ground beef, chicken and bean chimichangas ($6 to $8.50); and dinner combinations ($6.25 to $8.50). In addition to the standard margarita, the small-butmighty cocktail menu also includes bloody marys ($4), a strawberry margarita ($5), a tequila sunrise ($4), and a Cadillac margarita ($6). Thanks to his own photos and those shared on the Facebook fan page, Andrea was also able to replicate the original details of design, smallware and furniture. As a throwback to a time when MTV actually played music, the new location also features a projector TV that plays the channel’s top 500 music videos of all time on a loop, including Thriller, Vogue, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Waterfalls, U Can’t Touch This, Smells Like Teen Spirit, November Rain, and Hungry Like the Wolf. The Dash Inn Tribute Room is open Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The space is available for private parties on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Dash Inn Tribute Room, 3622 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.947.4006; www.dashinnaz.com.
