Fine hair has plenty of benefits. It’s quick to dry and style, doesn’t shed as much as thicker hair and looks stunning when bobbed. However, fine hair is also more prone to breakage. That’s why Rodney Gentry at Sachi Studios advises paying particular attention to your hair care routine when you have fine hair. “With fine hair, the strands have a smaller diameter, which means they are more vulnerable to damage. As such, it’s important to care for your hair the right way. Avoid any unnecessary heat treatments and go easy on the amount of product you use, as you’ll simply weight the hair down.” There are plenty of ways in which those with fine hair can add volume. Dry shampoo can work wonders, as can volumizing powder. Curling the hair without heat – by using a curling donut, for example – can also deliver impressive results. It’s important to use shampoos, conditioners and hair masques designed specifically for fine hair, according to Rodney Gentry. “Using products that have been made with fine hair in mind should maximize protection for your hair while also not weighing it down. This becomes even more important when coloring the hair, as coloring can make the hair dryer and thus more prone to breakage.” Rodney Gentry advises using heat protector spray religiously before blow-drying or curling, while also minimizing washing to preserve the intensity of the color for as long as possible. Dry shampoo is a double win in this respect, as it keeps roots from becoming too oily between washes while also adding volume. Fine hair can look incredible when colored and styled professionally. Contents Spring in Scottsdale is my favorite time of year. The weather is perfect. The wildflowers are starting to bloom and provide gorgeous scenery whenever I’m out hiking. My absolute favorite part of spring in the Valley is the sheer number of events. The city is teeming with so many things to do. From galas to performances galore, Scottsdale is a lively place in the spring. We’ve covered a plethora of events in this issue so you can keep busy. Turn to March Madness (on page 62) to read more about activities ranging from wine dinners to the FRIENDS Experience. As someone who watched that show growing up, I’m particularly excited about seeing the recreated scenes from the popular series. Galas are a great way to support local charities and nonprofits. We’ve written about two high-profile events that we think you’ll love to learn more about including Celebrity Fight Night (page 56) and the Make-A-Wish Arizona’s Wish Ball (page 58). See even more in Calendar on page 52. Another thing I love about a city like Scottsdale is there’s always a new restaurant to try. I was thrilled to read about Cala Scottsdale. This restaurant is helmed by Food Network star chef Beau MacMillan and features cocktails from noted mixologist Clint Spotleson. With these two hospitality powerhouses working together, I’m sure it will be a great place to dine out. Our cover story is all about fashion professional Philip Manghisi, who is the owner of luxury boutique Wunderkind. Manghisi has quite the backstory. After working for independent retailers in New York City and Los Angeles and learning the ins and outs of the luxury fashion world, he decided to move to Scottsdale to bring what he calls “uncomplicated luxury” to Arizona. Plus, his store is gorgeous. Take a look at page 40. I interviewed him for this issue, and it was inspiring to speak with someone so passionate about his work. Arizona is a true golfer’s paradise. Home to more than 300 golf courses, all varying in difficulty and magnificent landscapes, there is a course or two (or five) for every kind of player: amateur, professional and those in-between. With stellar golf courses (and not to mention ideal golf weather for most of the year) comes stellar

tournaments — the kind people travel to attend. Take the Waste Management Phoenix Open as one example. Growing up in Scottsdale, Jason Richardson had access to these stellar courses and tournaments right in his backyard. Golf inevitably became a hobby of his.

“I love it! I try to get out once a week. The last two courses I played were Monument at Troon North and Stadium at TPC Scottsdale,” he says. Something Richardson never loved about golf was the nondescript attire. Plain polos somehow became the unofficial official uniform of the sport, which did no favors for a game many consider dull to watch. After searching the Internet to no avail for a vibrant polo to wear to a tournament, Richardson decided it was high time to re-brand the way people think about golf and golfers. “Nobody was putting prints on polos, so I created a product I wanted and was proud to wear. In May 2017, Bad Birdie was born [in my Los Angeles apartment],” he says. Bad Birdie offers a wide range of brightly colored and patterned polos in an athletic fit optimal for playing golf.

As the company’s website says, “These aren’t your grandpa’s polos.” Before this, Richardson, a marketing professional, produced commercials and branded content for companies like Nike, Apple, Microsoft and Toyota for years. He switched gears and became a freelancer working on a project-to-project basis while simultaneously launching Bad Birdie as a side hustle. But as demand for his bold and playful polos increased, so did his time. “I slowly started taking fewer commercials as a producer and invested my time back into every aspect of the business. I did every job in the company from answering customer service emails to packing boxes to running Facebook ad campaigns,” Richardson says. Shortly after his wedding, Richardson and his wife, Jenna Richardson, decided to fully invest in Bad Birdie. They bought inventory and hired employees so that the business could soar. Richardson even brought Bad Birdie to ABC’s Shark Tank stage. Shark Tank is a TV show where business professionals pitch their ideas to a group of investors or sharks who decided whether to invest in the company or not. His episode aired in April of 2020, and Bad Birdie even secured an investor. “[Being on Shark Tank] was the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done but also one of the most exhilarating. There are tons of nerves before you go into the tank and even more when the sharks start asking questions. Overall, it was a fun and challenging experience that felt a bit like business boot camp crammed into a few minutes,” he says. The time and money Richardson invested into his company paid off. Now, 16 employees run the business operations of Bad Birdie from the company’s home office in Scottsdale. This past holiday season, Richardson debuted the company’s first retail store located in Kierland Commons. He and his team are eager to explore growth on all fronts, including expanding the line of products and opening more retail shops locally and nationally. Bad Birdie was a mere hatchling when it got its start in Richardson’s L.A. apartment. Now grown to spread its wings, the company’s mission remains the same as it did in 2017: To make golf more fun and inclusive for anyone who wants to play. “Most golf companies build their marketing around performance, rigid traditions or the exclusivity of the sport. Bad Birdie builds our marketing around the belief that golf is one of the most fun things you can do with your buddies on the weekend,” he says. “Our content shows guys being their authentic selves, with their shirts untucked, wearing a backwards hat and holding a cold beverage in hand and playing one of their favorite games with some of their favorite people. We’re selling fun and community.” With Richardson at the helm, the next golfing generation is changing the way golf is perceived. And until Bad Birdie brickand-mortars land in other states, Arizona is home to yet another golf-related thing: the coolest looking players on any greens that are there to enjoy the great game of golf. “Golf is meant to be fun. As founder and owner of Mackenzie Collier Interiors, Mackenzie Collier knows first-hand how hard it is to run and grow a business. She learned that the key to financial success in interior design was going to be streamlining her business systems and processes to be more efficient. She launched her latest venture to share her knowledge with others. Groundwork for Growth is a personalized training program for service-based business owners that teaches them how to implement systems, increase profits and instill values that are vital for company growth and culture. “I’ve been through the trenches and learned so many lessons the hard way. So I want to give back to my industry and help other interior designers avoid the same pitfalls that I fell into,” she says. “When COVID19 hit, many of my fellow interior designer friends were struggling to keep their doors open. During conversations, I realized how much other designers might benefit from my own expertise in running a profitable interior design business.” When she says she’s been in the trenches, she means it. “When I graduated from design school, the economy was struggling, and it was tough to find an entry-level position. I decided to nanny and freelance my design skills on the side,” says Collier, a graduate of Harrington College of Interior Design in downtown Chicago. Her freelancing work quickly snowballed into steady business and a decade later, Collier has a team of 10 employees working on projects all over the country. Mentalist Brett Barry performs mind-blowing entertainment at corporate events

In 2012, Brett Barry quit his job in residential real estate to pursue a second career as a professional mentalist. He performs at high-end corporate and private events throughout the country. As a mentalist, he seemingly reads a stranger’s thoughts or impossibly guesses complex information using “secrets” in the mystery arts. For instance, whether he’s breaking into a fully locked iPhone or knowing the name and details about your first kiss (OK, not too many details), mentalism is more hard-hitting and personal, and something that most people have never experienced in person. “I don’t do tricks – I do extraordinary things with ordinary objects,” he says. He doesn’t claim psychic abilities and avoids doing anything that feels like magic or a trick, but in most cases, Barry knows impossible things that he should not know. But he does. “My goal is to lead folks into a gray area – that on the drive home, people will wonder if what they experienced might be real – or not?” he says. He dabbled in entertainment as a child. “Magic had been my lifetime hobby since age 10,” he says. “I performed for my kids and their classmates when they were growing up.” One day a fellow parent asked Barry to perform at a holiday party and that kicked off his reinvention into a full-time performer. “Having that 25-year sales background helped me enormously and still does in terms of understating people and reading minds,” Barry says. From mingling and mind-reading at cocktail parties and trade shows to large venues for 500 plus audience members, Barry performs a variety of shows. He’s often at resorts including The Phoenician, The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, The Royal Palms, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and has worked with hundreds of companies including The Arizona Cardinals, Microsoft, APS, AT&T and Clorox. Stylist Eddie Tomines’ wardrobe is an eclectic mix of street and designer

As a personal stylist designer and footwear stylist at Nordstrom at Scottdale Fashion Square, Eddie Tomines helps his customers look their best. “You get to see the latest fashion come through. I get to get creative in my clients’ dressing rooms, and you can’t forget the shoes,” he says of what he loves about his job. His interest in fashion started early. He watched the MTV Music Video Awards as a child and loved spotting the trends. In high school, he started wearing his parents’ vintage clothes. He donned his father’s old fitted baseball ringer T-shirts with bell bottoms and platform Converse. After high school, he started working for Nordstrom and has been with the company for 23 years. Tomines opened the Scottsdale location in 1998. He described his style as a mix of street plus designer. Some of his favorite brands include Balenciaga, Gucci, Zara, Celine, Nike, Prada, Dior, Fashion Nova, ASOS and Saint Laurent. His general style advice? “It’s about how you style the outfit and wear it that makes you stand out, not the price tag,” he says. “Remember confidence is key.” See his Instagram @FashunEDDIEquet.

How has your style evolved? It’s forever changing. What I was wearing in the ‘90s, I’m wearing all over again, but this time it’s a bit more refined. I’m ditching the skinny jeans and obsessing over wide leg, straight, loose taper and baggie styles. Who is your favorite designer? Hands down my all-time favorite designer is Virgil Abloh of Louis Vuitton. May he rest in peace. What is your favorite piece of clothing? My very favorite is a vintage red leather Saint Laurent blazer made in 1981. I bought it when I was 18 from a neighborhood thrift store for $75 in 1996. I still wear it.

From classic violin to contemporary pop, violinist and vocalist Selin Eskandarian’s strives to hit all the right notes in her music and style when she’s performing at blacktie events all over the Valley of the Sun. Known professionally as Esko Violin, Eskandarian can play any genre of music by ear while mastering the art of dressing “boho chic.” Her carefree style is influenced by her international travels to Europe and beyond. "Seeing how other cultures dress has a big impact on how I style myself. I love Indian fashion because it is so colorful,” she says. Foregoing too much structure, Eskandarian opts for flowy tops, leggings and flip flops. “I love a great colorful kimono with a swirl patter,” she says. “And I’ll always be a huge fan of bell bottoms.” Whether she’s teaching private piano, violin or ukulele lessons or performing at a high-end event or a wedding, Eskandarian relies on intricate and elaborate jewelry sourced from small local shops to elevate her outfit. “I dress very chic in black, then add some original jewelry to complete my look,” she says. “I follow the latest trends while incorporating my boho chic style.”

Who influences your style? My favorite style icon is a belly dancer named Rachel Brice. Her style is very boho and vintage. Her style reflects her independence. I also love Stevie Nicks’ style. It’s definitely boho chic. What is the most prized possession in your closet? All of my kimonos and long skirts. Actually, I have a favorite dust colored kimono that I absolutely love. The color looks amazing when I have a nice tan, and it’s very lightweight. What is your favorite store? I love Express and Free People because of the amazing quality and trendy looks. Express has a little bit of everything and always stays with the trends.

Philip Manghisi is bringing uncomplicated luxury and hard-to-find brands to Scottsdale

With the opening of his boutique Wunderkind in January of 2022, fashion veteran Philip Manghisi is offering a unique retail experience in Scottsdale. He has over a decade of experience and will be bringing his luxury connections to the Valley. Brands that you can find at Wunderkind that you likely won’t be able to find anywhere else in Arizona include Alaia, Zeynep Arcay, Alanui and Judith Leiber, among others. The store strives to be a one-stop shop. Find purses, women’s clothing, women’s shoes, fine jewelry, eyewear and home accents in his 3,600-square-foot shop. “You should visit my store if you're looking for a place to shop that has a pulse,” he says. He wants to fill a retail niche in the Valley and bring what he calls uncomplicated luxury to Arizona. Here’s what that means to him: “I'm not buying anything that when you come in the store, I need to explain it,” he says. “I'm only buying what I think are beautiful clothes that I think are easy to wear, that are luxurious.” Why open a new brick-and-mortar retail space when online shopping is so prevalent? Because of the undeniable tactile appeal of clothing. “If I'm going to spend a lot of money on something, I want to touch it. I want to feel it. I want to put it on my body. I want to walk out with a shopping bag, and I want the world to see that I just spent some money,” he says. “I like the romance of fashion. Both the actual product and also the buying experience of fashion.” He’s hoping Scottsdale shoppers will feel the same way. Why open a shop in Scottsdale? He remembers loving the city when he was just 6. He recalls visiting Taliesin West in Scottsdale and Rawhide in Chandler. Flash forward about 20 years later, and he was back in town visiting a friend. He says he fell in love all over again and was wondering why an independent luxury retailer wasn’t already here. “Since I am a dyed in the wool specialty retail guy, I couldn't understand why there wasn't a store like the ones that I was So Scottsdale! working for,” he says. When Barneys New York at Scottsdale Fashion Square closed in 2016, he was waiting to see if anyone would open an independent retail shop in the Valley. When no one did, he decided he would be the person for the job. He left Los Angeles and moved to Scottsdale in August of 2021 to open Wunderkind. “I felt like if there's anybody who's going to open a store here that's going to

do well, it's going to be me because I've been here before. I'm not just plopping an outpost of some other store that's based somewhere else here. I moved here. I'm going to live here. I'm going to be part of the community. So I can make it work, and I'll make it work,” he says.

Career Beginnings Manghisi has an impressive resume. He was a buyer—meaning he would decide

what designer goods were on store racks—for both Jeffrey in New York City and Elyse Walker in Los Angeles. He started working at Jeffrey as a cashier at 19 when he was a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He worked his way up to the sales floor and started buying for Jeffrey when he was just 20—a true rarity. Jeffrey boutique founder Jeffrey Kalinsky even gave Manghisi the nickname “wunderkind” (in German, it means “child prodigy”) as a nod to Manghisi’s stellar buying skills. The boutique’s name serves as an homage to Kalinsky, who started Manghisi’s career. As a buyer, he meets with designers about six months in advance to decide what to sell. For him, buying is often based on emotions. “The luxury clothing industry is definitely one that's built on emotion. So if you love it, you just have to bet on the fact that your customers are also going to love it,” he says. One of his best job perks? He gets to attend fashion week. Yes, those glamorous affairs you see in fashion magazines. “I’ve seen many a celebrity at a fashion show,” he says. “It's the real theater. You get to really see how the designer envisioned the clothing being worn.” During pre-pandemic times, he’d often travel to shows in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Milan and Paris. A few days after the show, he’ll visit a showroom where he gets to see the clothes in person. Each season, he’ll typically buy six to eight different styles of clothing from a designer and have several sizes in each style. The pandemic has made trips to Europe difficult. “Luckily, since I have what I think is a good reputation in the industry and because I've worked for and with two of the smartest independent retailers in the US and/or the world, I have this relationship so I can buy most of what I want to buy,” says Manghisi. “The hard thing to buying now is new things.”

Bringing His Fashion Expertise to Scottsdale He was being interviewed for a podcast in March of 2021 when he was asked about his next career move. He answered that he’d like to open his own store. “I didn't want to open a store where there was a ton of competition because I'm a small guy. I'm


not trying to really compete, and there are places that don't need another store,” he says. He decided on Scottsdale, a city he first fell for as a child. When he started looking for a retail space, he wanted a location near Paradise Valley. He eventually found it. The location on Scottsdale Road is ideal. It’s nearby Scottsdale Fashion Square and a stone’s throw from Pucci Salon, James Elliot jewelry store and Roka Akor. After he found his dream location, it was time to dream of the interior. He designed the entire store himself and selected everything from the light fixtures to the furniture. “I wanted the store to feel light. And I want it to feel pretty, but not too girly. I want it to feel luxurious, but not too fancy because I don't like walking into a store and feeling like it's a museum. I wanted people to feel like this was the place that they can hang,” he says. The shoe section of his lightfilled shop features two big sectionals. Chandeliers add a touch of glamour. One highlight is a rack of vintage evening gowns. When we spoke in late January, he had six gowns including vintage Bill Blass, Mugler and Scaasi. “I've always loved gowns. I love things that are special and have already lived a life,” says Manghisi. “I like having that in the store because I feel like a lot of these women go to the same events as everybody else, and they want to wear something that nobody else will be wearing.” Inventory at Wunderkind is always changing and has been carefully curated by a man who is dedicated to fashion. “I picked every single thing in the store. So I really do love everything that's in here,” says Manghisi. “The store feels alive. And I think that it feels like a place where you come and you want to buy something because it has a good vibe. It doesn't feel stale. It feels upbeat. It's a place where you know that what's in the store was bought by somebody who's been doing this for a long time, who lives here and who bought it for you. The iconic philanthropic event will focus its star power and influence on defeating cancer

Over the years, Celebrity Fight Night has raised more than $90 million — benefiting many charities — and is one of the Valley’s highest profile, must-attend events. Last year, the CFN foundation joined forces with Gateway for Cancer Research and will hold its first event in two years on March 12 at JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa. Multi-platinum international musician Pitbull will headline the new Gateway Celebrity Fight Night, with Grammy award-winning country music singer Reba McEntire returning as emcee. The black-tie event will feature a cocktail reception, an elegant dinner and a live auction with one-of-a-kind luxury items, with all proceeds directly funding clinical research cancer trials. Confirmed celebrity appearances include Katharine McPhee, The Tenors, The London Essentials and David Foster, with some yet-to-be-revealed surprise guests. Jimmy Walker founded Celebrity Fight Night in 1994. The gala was distinguished for its affiliation with the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, who was the guest of honor each year for two decades until his death in 2016. The event played a significant role in establishing the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. Make-A-Wish Arizona is the founding chapter of an international organization that works to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Wishes can range from getting to meet a unicorn to going bobsledding. Founded in 1980 by six Arizona residents, since its inception, MakeA-Wish has granted more than 7,500 wishes to kids in the community. Every 20 minutes, a child is diagnosed with a critical illness. The funds raised by the Wish Ball enable children to live out their greatest wish, giving them a brief respite from treatments and doctor visits and hope when they need it most. This year’s theme, Making Waves, was the idea of co-chairs Dana Graham and Stephanie Halvorson, who are both wish moms. Their sons Carter and Hunter are

both battling rare Langerhans-cell histiocytosis and were granted wishes in 2013 and 2014, respectively. “With Dana and Stephanie both being wish moms, they’ve seen firsthand the impact of this event,” says Hollie Costello, vice president of marketing and public relations for Make-A-Wish Arizona. The 2022 Wish Ball takes place at the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa in Scottsdale. The event is expected to draw 800 supporters who will meet and hear stories of hope from Arizona children who have had their wishes granted. Attendees will also enjoy dinner and live music and can bid on experiences, art, fashion and more via a live and silent auction. Supporters can even take advantage of the Fund-A-Wish opportunity,

and those who cannot attend can vie for auction items online, beginning on March 1. The average cost of a wish is approximately $10,000, and the money raised at the event will help to grant more than 548 wishes Make-A-Wish Arizona is currently planning. “This is our largest fundraiser and has allowed us to grow the number of wishes that we can grant, year over year. I like to say that wishes are magical for the kids, and a lot of hard work for those involved in the planning,” says Costello. “Everyone involved with Wish Ball is passionate about the event and the reason behind it, and we’re excited to return to a fun, live event that will look a lot like the traditional Wish Balls we’ve seen in previous years.”

A POP(PE) OF COLOR

With every colorful paint stroke, artist Paige Poppe captures the joy of nature

Growing up in Arizona as an only child, a resourceful Paige Poppe always sought out solo activities to keep herself preoccupied. Coloring and crafting were among her favorites. Recognizing this, Poppe’s mother stowed a box of crayons in her purse for her daughter in case inspiration struck. While studying architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California, Poppe’s childhood passion for the arts became a form of self-care. With her degree in hand, she returned home with a newfound appreciation for the desert landscape and a burning desire to create. Pursuing art fulltime felt like the next right step, so she took it. Now 29, Poppe owns and operates PaigePoppe.com, her artist site where visitors can shop her original artworks and commission special projects, including branding services, murals and original paintings. From greeting cards to stickers to mugs, Poppe also offers more than 400 products online and at 30 plus retailers in the United States – including local spots Leela Market and the Desert Botanical Garden – that bear her colorful designs. Whether it’s consuming a wall, printed on cardstock or covering a canvas, Poppe’s art will elicit a smile, even from the grumpiest bystander. She describes herself as energetic, creative, positive and sun-loving. Her art sings a similar tune. Primarily using watercolor, Poppe paints in layers and uses every hue under the sun. “From an early age, I would say, ‘My favorite color is rainbow.’ I love that I can incorporate that childhood magic and creativity into my work today,” she says. Landscapes are her shtick. Splitting her time between her two studios in Scottsdale and Minneapolis, Poppe seeks inspiration from each city’s vastly different yet equally beautiful outdoor spaces. Whether she’s painting cacti or a blizzardy Midwestern scene, her goal with all her pieces is to bring the joy of nature indoors. “Antique and thrift stores have always inspired me, too. I enjoy soaking up the textures, color palettes and patterns while browsing,” she says. Because of the slew of services she offers, Poppe is busy year-round with projects, which she loves. Currently, she is illustrating her fourth children’s book in collaboration with local author Matt Molnar. In addition to private commissions, she is working on a large-scale project for the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, taking place April 22 to 24 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Looking ahead, Poppe hopes to buy her own home someday so she can create a personal space that’s just as vibrant as her paintings. “I want to create the art studio of my dreams,” she says. “One that is bright with natural light and surrounded by a garden.”

MARCH IS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. GET CHECKED: COLONOSCOPY OR OTHER SCREENINGS MAY HELP HEAD OFF COLORECTAL CANCER.

M

ore people are surviving colorectal cancer than ever before. It’s a promising trend over the past two decades that we can attribute to greater awareness and colonoscopy screenings. Today, there are more than 1 million colorectal cancer survivors in the United States, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Colorectal cancer is the third most common non-skin cancer affecting both men and women. An estimated 132,700 new diagnoses are expected this year alone. Screening is an important preventative measure to catch any signs of cancer at an early stage. With screening, doctors may identify polyps before they develop into cancer. If cancer has already developed, the earlier it is found, the easier it may be to treat. Yet only 55 percent of those who should get screened actually do. Several screening options are available, including a stool DNA test and colon capsule endoscopy, but colonoscopy remains the gold standard test to detect colorectal cancer early. During a colonoscopy, a trained specialist, such as a gastroenterologist, places a long, flexible, narrow tube called a colonoscope or scope in the body. This tool has a light and tiny camera on one end so your doctor can look for irritated and swollen tissue, ulcers, polyps,

and cancer inside the colon and rectum. Here are the American Cancer Society’s colorectal screening guidelines: • Adults at average or low risk screened starting at age 45. • Adults at higher risk or with a family history of colorectal cancer should talk to their doctor about a more aggressive screening test. • If your family does not have a history of colorectal cancer, you should be screened every 10 years. • You should be screened up to the age of 75. Patients older than 75 should consult their doctor about whether additional screenings are necessary. Acceptable types of screening tests include: STOOL TESTS • Fecal immunochemical test every year • High-sensitivity, guaiac-based fecal occult blood test every year • Multi-target stool DNA test (Cologuard) every three years ENDOSCOPIC OR IMAGING EXAMINATIONS • Colonoscopy every 10 years • CT colonography every five years • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years If your doctor finds precancerous polyps during the colonoscopy, he or she would remove them at that time.

Doing so reduces the risk of the polyps developing into cancer. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of getting a colonoscopy. While it might sound like an unpleasant procedure, keep in mind that you will be asleep and will not feel a thing. It’s also helpful to know the symptoms of colorectal cancer. Too many times, I’ve seen patients who’ve ignored the symptoms for so long that they end up being diagnosed with advanced cancer, which is more challenging to treat than early-stage disease. Symptoms include: • A change in bowel habits • Blood in the stool • Anemia, a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells • Unusual abdominal pain that does not go away • Unexplained weight lost These symptoms are often experienced when the cancer is in its advanced stages. Most patients with early stage colorectal cancer may not have any outward physical symptoms. That’s why colonoscopy screening is so critical. For more information visit cancercenter.com. Magical Mission of Madness For our March issue my Mission of Madness takes us to my home city of San Francisco. We are about to find out if there is still a luxury lifestyle during what is hopefully a now waning pandemic. My first stop for luxury, the Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. I was a bit disappointed to find out that their iconic afternoon tea is still closed but way lucky for me the Ritz is also home to The JCB Lounge by Jean-Charles Boisset, an over-the-top ultra-sensory luxurious wine tasting lounge. I am a California girl so my palate should be much more sophisticated than it actually is, but rather than being raised on Chardonnays and Champagne I was actually raised on cool pops (‘member those) and drinking out of the hose on hot summer days. I must admit that I am no Chevalier du Tastevin but I have always aspired to wine enthusiast greatness. The tasting lounge is nothing short of spectacular, not just the wines but the opulent environment that JCB is the master of creating. His jewelry and fragrance collections are also featured along with the most exquisite Baccarat crystal wine accessories, proving that we can all be wine snobs at whatever level we desire. I no longer miss afternoon tea because our hostess Amy entertained my guests and me at the highest level. This would be the

2022 FORD BRONCO BADLANDS EDITION America’s most anticipated vehicle of the year is finally here BY JIM PRUETER

After a 30-year hiatus, the all-new Ford Bronco has finally arrived and it’s sensational. In a booming adventure vehicle market that’s been dominated by Jeep Wrangler, the uncontested off-road world-class champion, the doors have literally come off with the introduction of Ford’s version of the Jeep Rubicon. It borrows heavily from the Jeep Wrangler, offering removable doors (two or four) with their own storage bags, a massive amount of ground clearance with minimal overhang and a removable hard or soft top. Our Bronco Badlands tester came with the optional Sasquatch Package that includes humungous Goodyear LT315/70R17 35-inch tires mounted on 17-inch beadlock alloy ring wheels. Ground clearance is 11.5 inches. Design-wise, the new Bronco looks nothing like the infamous white O.J. Simpson getaway Bronco from 27 years ago, rather the Ford design studio did an exceptional retro-reimagination of the classic 1966-1977 Bronco. It’s so beguiling, nearly 250,000 drooling buyers have plunked

down a deposit to get in the reservation line. Buyers can select from six trim levels and four optional packages along with a choice of 11 colors. The big Bronco is boxy with large windows, a roomy front seat and ample rear cargo room. There’s a push-button selector for 4-wheel high or low. For many, the concept of exploring wide open spaces and sleeping under the stars is an alluring one. However, the thought of relaxing with neither running water nor indoor plumbing for an extended period is not. Enter desert resorts. Desert resorts provide an elevated means to experience the great outdoors without giving up creature comforts. Many of these glamping resorts may even have more luxuries than one might find at home. Banderas Bay offers sun, sand and luxe resorts along Mexico’s picturesque Pacific coast

Though the Mexican state of Jalisco is known worldwide for the city of Tequila – and its popular libation of the same name – it is also home to much of the Bahía de Banderas or Banderas Bay. The 62-mile long bay straddling Jalisco and the neighboring state of Nayarit boasts sandy white beaches, crystal blue waters, lush golf courses and award-winning resorts. The waterfront wonderland less than two-and-a-half hours via plane ride from the Valley is a true slice of heaven on earth. The most populated area along the bay is Puerto Vallarta. A resort town, Puerto Vallarta is the place to go for fun in the sun followed by a bustling nightlife scene. The area is the ideal combination of charming cobblestone walkways with ornate churches, boutiques and botanical gardens mixed with bars, nightclubs and waterfront restaurants galore. Two popular attractions include the Cuale Cultural Center that offers art, dance, drama and music workshops in addition to access to the Cuale Archaeological Museum, and El Malecón, a mile-long path closed to cars that follows the edge of the sea. Los Muertos Renata’s Hearth A twist on a traditional agave cocktail, Los Muertos starts with reposado tequila that has been infused with Serrano peppers. The tequila is combined with agave and lime juice to bring out the sweet and tart notes and then activated charcoal, which turns the entire potion black. Rimmed with black lava salt, Los Muertos is doused in smoke and then topped with a cloche to capture the aromatics until they arrive at the table for the reveal. $22. www.renatashearth.com All Gucci The Americano A love letter to the flavor notes in Amaro Montenegro – cinnamon, clove and nutmeg – this stunner starts with Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey. Lure Fish House opened in late 2020 intending to give guests an elegant experience they might expect from an oceanfront seafood restaurant that just so happens to be located in the heart of Scottsdale. With dishes like the Linguini with Clams ($22), it is clear Lure is hitting the mark. The light, cream-free take on the coastal classic stars nearly a pound of littleneck clams sourced from different regions based on seasonality. Olive oil, garlic, chili flakes and parsley are sautéed with white wine to make the sauce. The clams are then placed on top and cooked in the mixture until each one opens. Al dente linguini is then added to the pan and tossed. Garlic butter, lemon juice, additional chopped parsley and toasted panko are then added to provide a depth of flavor and contrasting textures. Prep & Pastry offers a frothy alternative to mimosas with YaYa’s Morning Start

Since opening on the Scottsdale Waterfront in 2019, Prep & Pastry has offered guests a fresh menu of upscale breakfast, lunch and brunch fare daily. The robust food offerings are paired with an expansive menu of house-steeped teas, organic fair trade coffee drinks and inventive craft cocktails. Among the most creative on the newly launched spring craft cocktail menu is YaYa’s Morning Start ($10), a great alternative to the traditional mimosa. The cocktail even features a surprising ingredient, Greek yogurt, in the recipe. “We loved the idea of adding the protein-rich yogurt to a cocktail as much for its health benefits as for the creaminess and froth it could add,” says Nate Ares, co-founder of Prep & Pastry. The yogurt is combined in a shaker with ice, mint, lemon juice and cucumber slices. “Before shaking comes the other wow element: our vodka,” says Ares. “To make it, we take Tito’s Vodka and infuse it with Maya Tea Company loose leaf prickly pear green tea, straining after a few hours once it reaches our preferred flavor profile. “ According to Ares, the prickly pear gives a delicate softness while the green tea packs a punch. “Once we shake all the contents, the yogurt acts much like an egg white would, adding a layer of foam and richness to the cocktail,” says Ares. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Omar Bernal of the W Hotel and Sushi Roku Omar Bernal is the culinary director for the W Hotel and executive chef at the hotel’s Sushi Roku, where he takes diverse ingredients from Asia, Latin America and Europe and transforms them into edible works of art. First, tell us about some of these diverse ingredients? We work with sea bream, Okinawa sea salt, kumquat, black edamame and daikon. We pair the outside-of-the-box ingredients like those with elevated favorites including Wagyu beef, Chilean sea bass, lamb chops and caviar. How can first-time guests sample a good mix of ingredients? We recommend first-time guests order the Izakaya Feast ($75 per person). An Izakaya in Japan is like a tapas bar in Spain or an osteria in Italy—a spot with a good mix of small bites to enjoy a little bit of everything. Our Izakaya features smaller portions of several menu staples including truffle brussels sprouts, sushi, skewers, sea bass and seasonal plates. What first got you into the kitchen? I grew up in Southern California. At 14, I scored a job at a tiny Italian restaurant run by an old Italian woman. She was a disciplinarian, but supportive. After high school, I enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, California, in 2003. I missed graduation (though I did get my certificate) because I took an internship in Spain. It was supposed to be three months. I stayed and mentored under a slew of award-winning chefs for three years. How did you make your way to the W Hotel and Sushi Roku? Since coming home from Spain in 2006, I’ve worked for the iconic Patina Restaurant Group and at Innovative Dining Group (Sushi Roku’s parent company) once before, both of which took me around the world. I opened the famed lounge and club BOA in Dubai. I’ve catered the Emmy’s. I founded a steakhouse in the Midwest. I even worked under celebrity chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and David LeFevre. But all the traveling took a toll. My wife and I planted roots in Arizona to be near our California families, and Innovative got me back thanks to this amazing opportunity in July 2021. Steak Tartare

The Mick Brasserie Tartares have been a staple in French cuisine since the 1920s when legendary chef Auguste Escoffier wrote about them in his best-selling book Le Guide Culinaire. The Mick’s take stays true to the traditional recipe, but with some Arizona influence thanks to sourced items from Rovey Family Farms in Glendale and Noble Bread in Phoenix. The base of the dish is raw Rovey Wagyu tenderloin. Cold Water Mussels Et Frites

Humble Bistro Across France and Belgium, restaurants frequently serve dishes “et frites” or with fries. Humble Bistro is no different. Humble fries are noteworthy and tossed in a gremolata of garlic, parmesan, lemon zest, fresh parsley and chili flakes. At Humble Bistro, there is even an “et frites” section of the menu, but the first item listed is its take on the popular moules-frites. The dish is offered with a traditional preparation – in a sauce of pinot grigio, shallots, garlic confit, fresh parsley, chili flakes, butter and lemon – or cioppino style with Calabrian chili red sauce added to the mix, both nods to versions across Europe today. $21. www.humblebistro.com.

Sapiens Paleo Kitchen Ever since Henry IV served this dish at his coronation feast in 1594, confit de canard or duck confit has been a staple of French cuisine and a highly coveted dish worldwide. Sapiens Executive Chef and France native Aurore de Beauduy’s homage to the traditional recipe starts with Moulard duck legs, each of which is cured with salt, garlic, rosemary and thyme and then slow cooked in rendered duck fat until soft. Café Paris There are 15 savory and six sweet crêpes available at this hidden gem. Do not sleep on this fresh, light option. Ratatouille is a vegetable stew that originated in Nice, France, that is bursting with garlic, spices, herbs, zucchini, peppers, onions, tomatoes and eggplant. Scottsdale’s newest hotel, Senna House Scottsdale, Curio Collection by Hilton, opened its doors in the Old Town Scottsdale Entertainment District in late 2021. The 169-room, six-story boutique concept is the first hotel to open in the district since the W Scottsdale in 2008. For long-time locals, the location is of note. This was the same site that once housed the beloved Don & Charlie’s restaurant. In January of 2022, the hotel announced Food Network celebrity chef Beau MacMillan would lead its signature eatery, Cala Scottsdale, in partnership with hospitality stars in chef Peter McQuaid and mixologist Clint Spotleson via Scottsdalebased restaurant group the Clive Collective. MacMillan or “BeauMac” was the long-time executive chef of Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, A Gurney’s Resort & Spa. He’s now a culinary advisor for Sanctuary. MacMillan is the culinary director of Cala and director of culinary operations for Clive Collective. McQuaid, who worked with MacMillan previously at Sanctuary, is renowned for his kitchen magic at the three-Michelin Star eatery Daniel, David Chang’s iconic Momofuku

and Grant Achatz’s Alinea, and Spotleson is well-known for his innovative cocktail creations at Virtu Honest Craft, Counter Intuitive and Herbs & Rye. Cala’s menu showcases coastal dishes from across the Mediterranean with a desert flair. The restaurant’s name is an homage to tiny beach cove street Cala Road in Mallorca, Spain, that features sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea. The modern, airy concept with clean lines, white accents and light wood throughout–reminiscent of dining in a coastal European city–is now open on the ground floor of Senna House, encompassing 5,000 square feet. A 1,750-square-foot patio space outside boasts a 40-foot bar and dining cabanas. Dinner is the current highlight here, but abbreviated breakfast and lunch menus are being served. Many plates highlight seasonal ingredients from local organic farmers and Scottsdale co-ops. Expect handmade pastas, cheeses, breads, locally grown vegetables and fresh seafood. Early standouts include the whipped ricotta with clover honey, spiced almonds and grilled toast ($12); hot honey harissa wings with peanut salsa and scallions ($17); and showstopping Westholme Wagyu ribeye with braised spinach, roasted garlic, cipollini onion and gorgonzola fonduta ($75). When it comes to cocktails, Spotleson has dreamed up a handful of inventive cocktails. Libations include the smoky Globetrotter ($19), featuring mezcal, Chareau, Bianco Vermouth, kiwi, lime and muskmelon and a Cosmopolitan that’s made using grappa, red grapes, elderflower, Cabernet syrup and lime.
