YOU ASKED!

Q:

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

Why are so many people now getting hormone replacement using pellets?

Q: When did pellet therapy start? A: Pellet therapy originated in Europe over 75

years ago and was introduced to the U.S. by Dr. Greenblatt at the University of Georgia. Pellet hormone therapy has been extensively researched and studied in medical journals all over the world since 1935, yet many people don’t realize that pellet therapy was actually regularly employed in the United States from the 1940’s through the 1970’s until pharmaceutical marketing intruded. Pellets were designed to change the internal physiology by reconstructing the hormone levels as close to what a woman or a man would possess in their late thirties or early forties.

Q: Why did you get involved? A: I became involved with pellet therapy at Eisenhower Medical Hospital, in Rancho Mirage, CA, in 1992. I was approached by Dr. Donald McEwen to see if I could help him insert pellets. I agreed but asked, “What are pellets?” This is the exact same response I hear from other doctors every day all over the world. Dr. Donald McEwen was taught by Dr. Greenblatt, so you might say this is only two degrees of separation from the physician who first started working with them in the U.S. The more I spoke and worked with patients the more I realized there was a need to individualize the dose for each patient’s HRT treatment. We all don’t wear the same size shoe, so why would anyone expect everyone to have the same pellet dose? A light bulb went off and I started individualizing patients with their own customized dose, which is widely used today.

Q: Fear not the testosterone pellet! A: The majority of people fear hormones and especially testosterone. What they don’t realize is every human being, including women, needs and makes testosterone. As a matter of fact, women make 300mgm/day when they are in their prime! Testosterone pellets can be used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It can be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets can increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need continuous adequate levels which can only be achieved with testosterone pellets for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels.

Q: What makes your practice so different than anyone else doing pellets? A: I pioneered an innovative method of customized dosing that provides each patient with a precise amount of the highest quality bio-identical hormone suited to his or her individual needs. Prior to this development, patients were administered a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone, which is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Many practices offer bio-identical hormone pellets but do not use our unique patent-pending dosing system based on science. For them it might be guesswork. While often copied but never duplicated, SottoPelle remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its ground-breaking science.

hew. Are you ready for this month? Get ready and take a deep breath, because we guarantee that you’ll be on-the-go every day, with a schedule packed with events. While we have the usual list of typical galas, gatherings, shows and concerts around town, January is also the month where the Valley is home to a variety of signature events, from golf tournaments to car auctions to art shows to yes, this year, the start of Super Bowl week. When I think of all that’s going on, I realize how lucky I am to live here. There are thousands of people from around the world who will be traveling to our hometown this month to take part in these events. While they’re here, they’ll eat at our amazing restaurants, many of which have top-notch celebrity chefs at the helm. They’ll shop everywhere from our small boutiques to our top designer stores. They’ll take in the beauty of our majestic mountains and stunning sunsets. And, they’ll stay at our worldrenowned resorts. All of this, in our own backyard. As always, this month we’ve tried to bring you the best and the latest of the local happenings. We chatted with Craig Jackson of the famous Barrett-Jackson company (which hosts this month’s Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction) for an inside scoop on growing up in Scottsdale, building a company, and this year’s auction; we have information about many of this month’s events; stories on interesting people and products; and fun fashions. I look forward to seeing you out and about this month! Enjoy our beautiful city.

A Connoisseur of Color Rodney Gentry, Stylist and Color Expert, Sachi Studios

With every new year comes new possibilities; the urge for change, for a fresh start, is nearly universal. And if you’ve heard of master stylist Rodney Gentry, this year you’ll want to start with your hair. His clients could just as easily be called fans, even traveling from other states because they’ll trust no one else with their tresses – and if you talk to any of them, be prepared for some enthusiastic gushing. Renowned for his skill, Gentry has become one of the most sought-after stylists in the Valley. Before relocating to Scottsdale, Gentry owned and operated his own salon in Chicago, where he perfected the techniques for which he’s become legendary. Now located in the Sachi Studios, he brings modern, big-city style, infused with a hearty splash of Midwestern charm that makes clients feel instantly comfortable: a combination which, more often than not, garners an unshakable loyalty. Drawing on years of experience, with a keen eye and attention to detail, Gentry strives to bring out the best in each of his clients, whether doing a routine trim or a dramatic hair makeover. He not only focuses on the style and color, but on restoring the health of the hair to full vitality, strength, and shine. “I don’t skimp when it comes to products,” he says. “I use the highquality stuff. It’s all top of the line.” In Gentry’s capable hands damaged hair doesn’t stand a chance, transforming from dry, frizzy, lackluster locks, often within just a few sessions. Above all, Gentry specializes in color. Highlights are expertly placed to accentuate his clients’ features, color custom-designed to flatter each

ful, but if it’s not part of their lifestyle, they’re not going to be able to maintain it,” he says. For 2015, Gentry forecasts several trends: Salted Caramel Hair Color to Chocolate Truffle hair color, Boho Waves, braids , long ponytails and twists are just a few of the things we can look forward to. And he’ll be bringing these styles – and more – to the Valley, with the kind of pride and expertise he’s become.

unique skin tone. He uses innovative methods and premium products (enzyme-based, rather than damaging peroxides) to ensure perfect results every time, and stays updated on the latest advances in the industry in order to keep clients trendy and cuttingedge. “The key to success is education,” he says. Gentry’s clientele achieve not only a fabulous look and healthier hair, but a style which can be easily managed and replicated outside the salon. His goal is to leave each person feeling as amazing every day as they do when they leave his side – because every style has to work in the real world. To do this, he takes the time to learn about their daily lives, ensuring plenty of one-onone time by never double-booking. “You can give them something beauti-

SERVING UP DELICIOUS FOOD ADVICE, ONE BITE AT A TIME The host of Restaurant Live, Joanie Simon shares her food experiences BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

T

he food scene here in the Valley is growing every day, and if you are on the lookout for somewhere new to check out, Joanie Simon is one of the best sources for ideas. Simon, a native Arizonan, has a great love for all things local, especially restaurants serving food made of local ingredients. After getting her master’s degree in another field and getting married, Simon realized her true passion in life was food—and the people who make it.

up close Simon’s family has been in the restaurant point-of-sale systems business for generations, and working with several of the local restaurant owners across the Valley left her wanting to share their stories with the public. “I love food and am passionate about it, but what I really love is promoting and talking about those people behind the food and telling their stories,” says Simon. “There are so many great people in the Valley making great food; I just want to share their stories with the public.” It was that passion about the local restaurant and food scene that pushed Simon to start Restaurant Live. Restaurant Live is a local podcast and online resource that celebrates and shares the stories behind the Arizona food and beverage scene. Simon says it is because of her time behind the scenes at the restaurants across the Valley that she feels the stories of those in the field need to be told. “I don’t think residents really think about the people who run the restaurants. They go to enjoy the food, but what do they really know about the chefs and owners?” she asks. “Restaurant Live is about the people behind those restaurants; they have a story. I want residents to remember they are real people who have lives, children, and families, and I want the public to think about that the next time they dine.” Simon is really hoping to encourage Valley residents to frequent the local dining scene for a number of reasons. She hopes that people realize that not only will eating at local restaurants feed the local economy, but it is also helping take care of people who live here and who have built roots in this Valley. In Simon’s words, “We just want people to know there are some really great places around town they may not have heard of before.” When Simon isn’t running around town trying out the next best thing in food or beverage, you may find her spending time at home with her two little boys. Ages 2 1/2 and 8 months, Simon is also a devoted mother and wife. Married for eight years, Simon and her husband

actually moved back to Arizona after a stint in New York City, realizing that the Valley might be a more affordable location to raise a family—plus the benefits of being closer to family also helps. Simon also recently gave national stardom a shot–she tried out for the Food Network’s popular show, The Next Food Network Star. While she didn’t walk away with a spot on the upcoming season, Simon says she probably walked away with much more than that. “I was appreciative for the opportunity, but perhaps learned that I don’t fit into the television host category. I can certainly cook up a storm and talk about food all day, but I am not ready to give up my name and my brand. I quickly realized that if I were to have moved on with the show, my brand is something that no longer would have been my own, and I’m not sure that is for me.” When talking about some of the foods Simon enjoys eating, so many

different options come to mind. However, there is one staple that Simon says she would likely turn to at just about any time and usually has on hand at home–potatoes. “I feel like I’m on a constant journey with food,” says Simon. “I am continuously being exposed to different tastes and cultures, so there is really no food that I don’t like. But when it comes to potatoes, you could say I have always had a major crush on them. I can eat a baked potato on any given day and feel great.” Many may wonder how Simon is able to eat all this food and maintain a fit frame. She says it is all about moderation. “I work out and have portion control. I only eat a part of what everyone sees on my plate. The rest I usually bring home for my husband or save for later. It is about moderation and portion control. It is pretty simple.” If you would like to learn more about Simon or listen to her podcasts, log on to www.restaurantliveaz.com.

THE BAKER KING

Matt Cottle is defying the odds and delivering delicious treats BY SHANA SCHWARZ PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

I

t would be quite an accomplishment for any 25-year-old man to have his own bakery, but it is especially so for Matt Cottle. After being diagnosed with autism at age 5, he faced a world in which 91% of autistic adults are unemployed–a statistic he was determined to overcome. “In high school, we had some folks come into our class to talk about careers and there was a guy representing a culinary class,” says Cottle. “He was talking about where culinary skills could take you, and all he had was a knife and an apple, and while he was talking about everything, he made a swan. I thought, ‘I could see myself doing something like that.’” After working with a pastry chef in his home for three years, Cottle and his mother, Peggy, founded Stuttering King Bakery (www.stutteringkingbakery.com). It’s not always easy, but he has advice for other people with autism who want to own their own business. “Never give up,” says Cottle. “If you fail, you just can’t give up. You’ll fail at this, you’ll fail at that, but that’s pretty much what life is. Keep trying–that’s how you’re successful.”

Etc. Where did the name Stuttering King come from? I named it after King George VI after the movie that inspired me, The King’s Speech. I liked that he had a certain disability and he was able to overcome it and that he became such an inspiration, being the king during a very difficult time period. What is your favorite thing to bake? People have been asking me what my favorite thing to bake is for years and I always reply, ‘Whatever brings home the most money.’ And that would be my triple chocolate brownies. I’ve done that so many times I could do it by memory. If you could work with one celebrity chef, who would it be? Pretty much no one because they don’t have patience. I did kinda like the Cake Boss for a while, but he definitely doesn’t have patience. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

YOUR DREAMS, REALIZED

Jaime Radow helps you bring your visions to life BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

I

f you’re ready to achieve your goals, there’s one person you need to call: Jaime Radow. Radow’s goal? Helping others define and actualize theirs. Radow is a life coach and personal brand consultant, helping people with their personal and professional growth. She spent 10 years as a trend forecaster and brand strategist in Los Angeles and New York, working with Fortune 500 companies. Radow has spent the last two decades studying consciousness and personal growth, earning an undergraduate degree in cultural anthropology, and master certifications in life coaching and neuro-linguistic programming. Radow spent four years combining her education and career experience to create a unique program called Life Support. Through the work, clients define clear goals, identify the challenges in achieving them, and establish the specific action items that will ultimately lead to their success. Today, Radow (www.jaimeradow. com) integrates her effective branding, life balance and communication techniques into private coaching, workshops and seminars, working with everyone from executives to new college graduates. “I love what I do,” she says, “because I have the opportunity to help people live to their potential and live in alignment with their truth. ”

Etc.

To you, what is the definition of success? Living your authentic truth and waking up each day with purpose and passion. Cultivating balance. What is one surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself as you’ve developed your company? By applying the Life Support program’s framework (define a specific goal, take consistent action, and practice visualization techniques) to my own life, I can achieve anything I set my mind to. When you’re not working, what else would we find you doing? Attending yoga teacher training. Exploring cities or nature. Singing in the car. Serving on a community board or volunteering. Curating my shoe collection. Giving someone a hug. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ost days you will find Lisa D’Onofrio at LunchBOX Wax, a Waxing Salon, helping men and women achieve the ultimate personal wax experience. When you see her, you will also see a woman likely dressed in a classic and causal style. Think jeans with a T-shirt, and perhaps a little leather jacket and pumps or boots. “Nothing too fussy, ever,” says D’Onofrio. “I am pretty causal but definitely hip for my age. I like things to be clean and simple.” Depending on her mood, D’Onofrio may throw a spark of color in there, as well. While day-to-day you may find her wearing the colors gray, taupe and white, she is not opposed to adding splashes of color with a bright shirt or bold accessories. To stay up with her style, D’Onofrio will often find her accessories and special pieces at local boutiques. As a local business owner herself, the mother of three says that supporting other local businesses is vital. “I like to shop where I live. It is important to me to support these smaller boutiques where I feel I find more unique stuff.”

If you could dress during any certain style period, which would it be and why? I definitely like the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” Audrey Hepburn is my idol! When I was thinner and younger, I could pull that off with ease—it’s classic and beautiful! My fun and trendy side always leans towards the ’60s! Do your kids take after your style, or do they have an entirely different style of their own? I have three children, each with their own unique style, but they definitely take an interest in what I’m wearing. The boys will often comment, “I love those shoes” or “Mom, you look great today.” My daughter idolizes me and is always in my closet and trying on my clothes. She does a great job in putting her own outfits together! Which celebrities do you think have the best style out there today? There are lots of amazing women out there. I like so many, but to name a few, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Audrey Gelman, Cate Blanchet and Jessica Alba.

itch Sayare has a style that is cool, classic, and comfortable. He has his doctorate in biochemistry, and was a professor at the University of Connecticut until the early 1980s. In 1995, he was recruited to start a biotech company in Cambridge, Mass. “I was the CEO of that company until I retired four years ago,” he says. “I now sit on three company boards and two not-for-profit boards.” He is also a mentor at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University for full-time MBA students, where he mentors eight students on leadership. It’s his way of giving back to the community. Sayare’s wife, Chrissy, owns To Be Continued… A Consignment Boutique at The Shops at Hilton Village, and Sayare is frequently at the boutique. “I see everything and I see everybody’s sense of style,” he says. Although his wife is the one in the fashion business, as you can see, Sayare is certainly fashionable himself. Do you have a typical way that you prefer to dress? “I’m a jeans and sports jacket kind of guy. My uniform is pressed jeans, a sports jacket, white shirt, pocket square, and some interesting shoes.” Where are your favorite places to shop? “Barneys [New York]. And I guess Neiman [Marcus] or Bergdorf [Goodman].” What man would you single out as a having a wonderful sense of style? “Giorgio Armani or Valentino... I like Armani’s style and I own a lot of Armani clothes.” What is the one article of clothing that is your absolute favorite? “I think the shoes that I’m wearing... or the blazer I have on, or the pocket square. I can’t tell you… Actually, I love my shirts— just plain white shirts. Isiai is the label and you can buy them at Barneys [New York] or Saks [Fifth Avenue].”

n a city full of transplants from other states, it seems like few people can claim native status in the Valley. Craig Jackson can’t either, but just barely. “I was born in Pontiac, Mich., but I was moved here when I was under a year old,” he says. “Everything I can remember happened here. We moved to Scottsdale in 1960 and lived over near Hayden and Thomas roads. There was a subdivision where everybody from Motorola lived, a cottonfield that got turned into housing.” What a difference 50-plus years can make.

I MAY WANT TO LEAVE EVERY SUMMER, BUT I NEVER REALLY WANTED TO LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE,” HE SAYS. “I’VE TRAVELED THE WORLD AND I THINK IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO VISIT OTHER PLACES, BUT SCOTTSDALE IS STILL HOME.

A CHANGING CITY “The city has changed a lot,” says Jackson. “When I was a kid, the city ended at Shea for a long time. There was hardly anything past that road. In the mid-1980s, Mayor Drinkwater took my brother and I out to what would eventually be WestWorld, and showed us where we should move our auction to. It was the absolute middle of nowhere. We used to go out there in high school because no one would bother you. It was unincorporated; it was just desert and we’d ride our dirt bikes and go off-roading. We used to have boondock parties out there, and it was just literally the end of nowhere. He told us that geographically this is going to be the center of Scottsdale, and my brother and I just laughed. He was right. “Actually, the center of Scottsdale is now just a little north of WestWorld. We’ve seen the city evolve. We put our stake down in this city a long time ago. The city has really changed, and so has the car culture. My dad and Tom Barrett, they started the Fiesta de los Autos Elegant, which was a charity event and a fundraiser for the arts in Scottsdale. That was in 1966. We’ve been involved in the city for a long time with philanthropy

SS_46_49CraigJackson_Jan15.indd 47

12/18/14 6:58 PM

and with trying to take Scottsdale to another level. We’ve had a lot of partners in doing that. Mayor Drinkwater was a big supporter of bringing the [Waste Management] Phoenix Open, the Arabians [Horse Show] and BarrettJackson back to Scottsdale, and he succeeded. I think it’s been a cornerstone in how Scottsdale is perceived to the world when you watch all the hours of golf and Barrett-Jackson. This year is just going to be unbelievable with the Super Bowl, the bowl games, everything—it’s just back-toback-to-back. I think he would have been proud to see how the city developed. Unfortunately, he retired and then he passed away shortly after. I think we’ve really seen this Valley develop in a great way and Scottsdale specifically, but the Valley as a whole, I think it’s just a gem.” While some might get anxious to try a different city after living somewhere so long, Jackson disagrees. “I may want to leave every summer, but I never really wanted to live anywhere else,” he says. “I’ve traveled the world and I think it’s always great to visit other places, but Scottsdale is still home. Because I run a business, even though I want to be gone all the time during the summer, I’m still here. It’s still a great place in the summer. The great thing is that you can get into your favorite restaurant without a line in the summer, so I take full advantage of that when I’m here. I think we’re very blessed, especially with the resorts, the golf courses, and the way of life in Scottsdale—it’s a very unique place. It’s a large city, but it feels like a small city in a lot of ways.”

that we were doing service work, before we even said what we were offering, we were overbooked. For people who want to buy a quality car, buy, sell or trade, or that want to get work done, we’re there year-round.” “It’s about 26,000 square feet. It lends itself very well to what we’re doing— working on collector cars, selling cars. We’ve got a full shop in there for all the Barrett-Jackson merchandise. We’ve got a full-time representative who can write insurance on collector cars. It’s a onestop shop for everything collector caroriented. We have concierge service. We are there to help with any facet of owning a collector car.”

BUILDING AN EMPIRE Continuing with what his parents built, Jackson has grown the Barrett-Jackson auction and brand into an empire. His new showroom is an exciting addition for the classic car community of Arizona. “It’s something people have asked us for a long time,” he says. “We had a headquarters, but we outgrew it, so we moved it up to the Airpark. I used to use it for my own cars and I used it as my own shop, but then I’d have people asking, ‘Where can I take my car to get it worked on, can you find this for me?’ And I thought, ‘You know, I just need to re-engage it and fill that void.’ The second that we announced

THE EXPANDING AUCTION If you’ve ever attended the auction, you know how big it is. It’s hard to believe that it is getting bigger again for 2015, but bigger it will be. “It’s growing again this year because we’ve got the whole Ron Pratte collection,” Jackson explains. “It has grown in days, and we’ve stretched the tent even SO SCOTTSDALE! |

further. Soon we won’t be able to stretch it any further! If you look at old aerials, it’s amazing how much it’s grown.” In addition to getting bigger in size, the auction is growing in scope and status, as well. “There are two things I’m most excited about,” he says. “Last year it was a new building after 25 years. This year

| JANUARY 2015

we’ve got the Pratte collection, but our new TV deal, too. Getting Velocity and Discovery is huge. We’re going back to our roots with Velocity, a 24-hour-a-day automotive channel covering the auction. We’re excited about the international coverage with Discovery. We’ll have hours that are dedicated to us being on Discovery, and those will be live in South America and Mexico, but also re-broadcast to 224 different countries around the world. It goes to branding Arizona and all of that. Discovery is the biggest network on the planet. It’s going to be awesome for us and the Valley to showcase us to the world.”

STANDOUT MOMENTS With several decades’ worth of auctions under his belt, there are countless memories that come to mind when Jackson looks back on it all. That being said, a certain few stand out as really special. “The year we sold the F88 was unbelievable,” he says. “One, because the car brought a lot more money than anybody thought it would, but also because

of the bidding war. I’ve never had a gentleman sit in a car and tell everyone else that he was going to buy it. I thought, ‘All right, that’s a pretty confident statement, but ok. You just never know exactly who you are bidding against and how far they’re willing to go.’ “Selling the Batmobile, I don’t know if there will ever be another moment like that again. “But, you say that and then we topped it by selling Carol Shelby’s Super Snake. How can you top selling that car with Carol Shelby on the block? It was an unbelievable moment with him just standing there like wow. The expression on his face was great. “We’ve had some amazing moments, but there never was a moment like when the Batmobile came in the building. It came in with George Barris riding on it. We dimmed the lights and we started putting the bat symbols all around and we played the Batman theme song and George rolls in like he’s the heavyweight champion of the world, and everybody from outside followed him in. Security JANUARY 2015 |

SS_46_49CraigJackson_Jan15.indd 49

49

couldn’t stop them. You couldn’t put another body in that building and the energy when that thing started going was unbelievable.” Will there be more unbelievable moments at this year’s auction? Only time will tell, but it’s a good bet that they will. “People need to take advantage of this,” says Jackson. “People come from all over the world to take part in Barrett-Jackson. It’s in your hometown. Don’t take it for granted. It is something special and there’s nothing like it in the world. Last year we broke two records in the Guinness Book of World Records. We took largest temporary structure in the world and largest marquee. That’s us against Super Bowls, World Cups, Olympics—big events, world-class venues. It is quite a show. It’s not just an auction, it’s a lifestyle, and there is something for everyone.” The Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction will take place from Jan. 10-18 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. At Royal Palms Resort and Spa (www.royalpalmshotel.com)….

TALKING WITH: Mona Mellegard, lead concierge YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 6 1/2 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Always our own Mix Up Bar first, but there are too many to just choose one. However, many of the restaurants such as Wildfish, Central Bistro, etc., have a great happy hour. STEAKHOUSES: Mastro’s City Hall, Steak 44, J&G, and Donovan’s Steakhouse, as they are close by, and a few of them also offer complimentary transportation for our guests. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: T. Cook’s first and foremost. However, if a guest has eaten here and wants to venture out, I suggest Elements at Sanctuary on Camelback, Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn, A Different Point of View, and many more depending on their needs and the atmosphere they are looking for. DINNER LOCALES: Oh, too many, as we have such fantastic choices today for dining in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Having been here now for over 35 years, I have seen the culinary experience grow, and take such phenomenal shape. It is a true pleasure to send guests to dining spots in our city today. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: If guests are looking for something out of the ordinary, and what I would call “foodies,” I would send them to Crudo, FnB or Virtù, as I call these restaurants “innovative cuisine.” BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: Again, this depends on the guest’s age and needs. They are always safe to go down to the Entertainment District in Scottsdale, as you can find almost everything there. PLACE TO GOLF: Being a golfer myself, I love to question the guest on what type of experience they are looking for. If they need something fast and easy, I send them to The Phoenician or to Camelback. If they have a car, and want to experience something unique, I send them to We-Ko-Pa, Quintero or to the TPC Scottsdale. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: Desert Botanical Garden, Taliesin West and Pueblo Grande Museum. ONE MUST-DO THING/EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY: The MIM [Musical Instrument Museum], Phoenix Art Museum, or a food tour of Downtown Phoenix. (I did this a few years ago, and was blown away by the guide and the history of Phoenix). We do also have a food tour in Scottsdale which is fun. I would also not miss taking a tour, or driving to Apache Trail, to see a bit more of the surrounding area. Also Cave Creek/Carefree if you want some Western experience.

At The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa (wwww.kierlandresort.com)…

TALKING WITH: David Lange, concierge/hotel marketing team leader YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 4 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Sapporo is a good start to the evening for drinks and appetizers. Right here at the Westin Kierland, guests can enjoy a cocktail on the patio along with music nightly from the bagpiper—it’s a great place to unwind and enjoy the sunset. Zipps, which has multiple locations, is also well known for their many TVs, drink specials, and cheap pizza slices. STEAKHOUSES: Dominick’s Steakhouse at Scottsdale Quarter has an upstairs seating area with a pool located in the middle, which makes for an elegant ambiance. Mastro’s Steakhouse in North Scottsdale has impeccable service and steak selections. Pinnacle Peak Patio is a more traditional steakhouse with Western roots. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: Elements at Sanctuary on Camelback is nestled at the base of Camelback Mountain and has spectacular views. It was my choice for Valentine’s Day two years ago. Deseo at the Westin Kierland features a Nuevo Latino menu with fresh ceviches and seafood, along with an intimate and unique atmosphere. DINNER LOCALES: El Chorro has an exquisite outdoor setting overlooking our gorgeous mountain ranges. Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort is a fine dining experience that is second to none. And, a window view at Different Point of View at Tapatio Cliffs overlooks the skyline of Downtown Phoenix. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: Alice Cooperstown in Downtown Phoenix is a fun mix of sports and rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, but also has tasty wings. It’s the ideal spot to go before a baseball or basketball game. La Fonda Del Sol in Scottsdale is a traditional Mexican restaurant with a true Southwestern feel. BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale is the place to be for nightlife. A couple of the more popular spots there are The Mint and El Hefe. For a bit more tame evening, the iPic movie theater at Scottsdale Quarter is a state-of-the-art cinema that offers in-theater beverage and dining service. PLACE TO GOLF: Being an avid golfer, I have had a “Top 5 list” for a while. [My favorites are] Troon North, The Boulders, Kierland Golf Club, We-Ko-Pa, and Whirlwind Golf Club. MUST-SEE LOCAL PLACES: The Cave Creek/Carefree area is an Old West-themed location that is ideal for jewelry shopping, horseback riding, and country bars. It gives you a sense of old Arizona and reveals how much the Valley has changed. ONE MUST-DO THING/EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY: I think hiking in Phoenix and Scottsdale is a must.

TALKING WITH: Kimberly Hillson, guest relations/concierge YEARS AS A CONCIERGE: 15 HAPPY HOUR SPOTS: Bistro 24 at The Ritz-Carlton has “5-45,” which are five delicious bites for $5—it’s a fantastic place to unwind after work and you can’t beat the price for the quality of the food and cocktails. Also, Christopher’s Restaurant has one of the best happy hours in town—Chef Christopher Gross has a delectable array of nibbles that you can pair with 1/2-off a glass of wine from their award-winning list. STEAKHOUSES: Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: Sitting on the patio of Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn, taking in the view at Elements, or having a picnic at South Mountain Park & Preserve. DINNER LOCALES: Sit at the bar at Dick’s Hideaway and watch them make the Carne Adovada you’ll want to devour. And, Chef Mark Tarbell just celebrated 20 years with his namesake restaurant, Tarbell’s—locals can hope for 20 more years of comfort food. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: I love to support local produce, products, and the chefs that work their magic: Kai, FnB, Posh, and the tasting menu at Binkley’s. BEST NIGHTLIFE SPOTS: For local flavor you can’t beat Handlebar J’s, or Rusty Spur [Saloon]. PLACE TO GOLF: For beautiful desert views and serious golf, We-Ko-Pa, or Dinosaur Mountain at Gold Canyon. PLACES FOR A ROMANTIC MEAL: We have three wonderful options here on property, La Hacienda, Toro, and Bourbon Steak. Café Monarch in Old Town Scottsdale has a lovely romantic patio. DINNER LOCALES: La Hacienda, El Chorro, and T. Cook’s. A casual favorite is La Grande Orange. MOST UNIQUE FOOD SPOTS: Toro at the Fairmont. “WHAT WAS THE MOST UNUSUAL REQUEST YOU’VE RECEIVED AS A CONCIERGE?” “Almost every concierge will tell you they have countless unusual requests, comical adventures, and outlandish tales to tell. One of my favorites is the request I received from a guest to help him find where country singer Waylon Jennings is buried. The guest was a huge fan and wanted to pay his respects—this is when I discovered the site www.findagrave.com, and was surprised to find out he is buried in Mesa.”—Kimberly Hillson, The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix “At a moment’s notice, I was asked by the bride, in my uniform and all, to be her matron of honor at the wedding ceremony held at our hotel gardens. Interestingly enough, the couple has returned several time to celebrate their anniversary with me.” —Julie Baxter, Arizona Biltmore “The guest wanted to know where they could purchase a Hardingfele (fiddle)?”—Trish Wagner, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess “A few years ago, I had a gentleman who wanted some very, very unusual candles (20 of them) in their room on arrival, and they cost $87 each. It took me a few days to hunt down this many. With a little help of the Special Services person at Barneys New York, we got it in time for the arrival.”—Mona Mellegard, Royal Palms Resort & Spa “We had a very high profile guest who requested to land his private 747 at the Grand Canyon!”—Susy Alpert, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North “When the College Football BCS National Championship Game was held here a few years back, I had an Oregon fan ask for numerous front row/50 yard line tickets. Needless to say, those tickets were very expensive. I was able to secure his tickets, but being a huge fan of the sport myself, I was shocked that somebody could spend so much money with the chance of being on the losing side. Unfortunately for the guest, he was on that side.”—David Lange, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa

new in town “We want to create a comfortable environment where families can enjoy sushi that we keep at an affordable price. We are very kid-friendly…. [and] we like to have a good time.”

Really Good Food

S

chuyler (Sky to his friends) Estes grew up a meat lover in Illinois. He always enjoyed cooking, and dreamed of owning his own restaurant someday. After graduating from Scottsdale Culinary Institute, doing the rounds with such Valley eateries as Cowboy Ciao and Four Peaks Brewery, and a stint Back East working with famed Asian chef Ming Tsai, he was ready to launch his own restaurant. “I didn’t expect it to be a sushi restaurant,” laughs Estes. But with a passion for Asian food, the Squid Ink Sushi concept was born. Estes and his business partner, Parker Ganem, opened the first restaurant in Peoria in 2010, followed by a Central Phoenix location in 2013. Estes is excited to bring his concept of “everyday sushi” to Scottsdale at the new Shea location, set to open late this month.

SQUID INK SUSHI

Top-notch food served in a fun atmosphere BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

The atmosphere is fun, but Squid Ink Sushi is all about the food. Estes uses local vendors whenever possible, and has fresh fish flown in daily. “We get the best and most sustainable fish,” he explains. “Tuna from Hawaii, Scottish salmon, Albacore from Fiji, Yellowtail from Japan.” In addition to traditional sushi and sashimi, Squid Ink has a variety of specialty rolls, including favorites like the Hory Fook (shrimp, avocado, spicy tuna, tempura jalapeños, and spicy aioli) and the Flying Phoenix (shrimp tempura, spicy crab, avocado, tuna tataki, and a delicious black pepper sauce). In addition to the Kobe burger and filet, non-sushi lovers can enjoy braised short ribs, coconut curry shrimp, and miso black cod.

The Squid Ink Concept of Art and Food Estes and Ganem wanted a local eatery where people could bring the entire family—including kids—to eat really good food. “We didn’t want people afraid of coming to a sushi restaurant,” Estes explains, as he points to menu items that include filet mignon, salmon, and a Kobe burger. “Being part of the community is important,” he continues, “so we want each location to have a local vibe.” The Shea location will feature natural woods, stone, and a large climate-controlled outdoor patio that you can enjoy year-round, with an indoor/outdoor bar.

The walls at each restaurant include detailed Asian-inspired murals by his brother-in-law, local artist Justin Queal, along with rotating local artwork that is for sale. Diners can also frequently enjoy local music. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

EXPERIENCE

COUNTS!

Looking great may be easier than you think. “I’d really love to do something to improve my face and figure, but I”m afraid of the pain, the post operative nausea and of course the cost. Isn’t there a way that I can enhance my appearance without all the hassles of a major production?” The answer is a resounding YES! Dr Andrew Wolin has found a great way to maximize the safety of facial, breast and body procedures while minimizing the pain and the cost. By utilizing an enhanced form of local anesthesia as well as sedation by specialists in ambulatory anesthesia, procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, facelifts, rhinoplasties and liposuction can be done under a quick enhanced form of anesthesia and patients are be able to walk to their cars and go home after the procedure without nausea and pain. Part of the miraculous process is the use of a long acting local anesthetic at the conclusion of the procedure to give a 48 hour period of pain relief…no narcotic…no nausea. PRE OP

t isn’t often that you have the chance to watch artists—whether renowned or emerging—create their artwork from scratch through to the finished piece. But, that’s exactly the opportunity that attendees have at The Celebration of Fine Art, an event that allows art lovers and artists to connect, and which draws attendees from all around the world. From raw form to magnificent finished pieces, artwork takes shape at this yearly celebration of art. In fact, 2015 marks the 25th year of this juried, invitational show and art sale. The Celebration of Fine Art is housed in the big white tents that go up at the southwest corner of Hayden Road and the Loop 101, a 40,000-square-foot area that offers temporary working studios to 100 artists who head to Scottsdale from around the country to participate in the 10-week event. The atmosphere is casual, and you can stroll through the event, chatting with the artists and watching them work, while also browsing through finished pieces. All artwork is also available for sale. There is also a sculpture court, set on an acre, that showcases life-sized and monumental sculptures, and where you can watch ceramic firings, bronze pours, and wood turning. The art at the event encompasses all mediums and styles, and new pieces are created daily, giving visitors plenty of reasons to visit often. Need another reason? The Celebration of Fine Art has been called “One of the West’s Premier Art Events” by Art & Antiques magazine.

Birds Nest, a 21-and-over entertainment tent that will showcase concerts from such names as Capital Cities, Darius Rucker, Kid Rock, and Afrojack. This year, one new aspect is the “new” 16th hole, the tournament’s most popular visitor locale. The 2015 version features a new loge section, 200 skyboxes, 5,000 general admission seats, and 15,000-plus fans. Another great thing about the tournament? The tradition of zero waste, even with 500,000 fans attending over the seven days. The goal became a reality in 2013, and continued in 2014. Hopes are to continue the trend in 2015, with all trash diverted from landfills (hence, how the tournament got its “greenest show on grass” title). There are no trash cans, just recycling and compost bins, solarpowered compactors, and more. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is hosted by The Thunderbirds, who have raised more than $93 million for charities, with more than $67 million generated in the last decade.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Where will YOU watch the big game?

T

he Super Bowl is almost here, but most of us won’t be lucky enough to score the hottest tickets in town. However, you can still enjoy the big game fun at several places around Scottsdale. Stop in to RnR—they have dozens of TVs, great comfort food, and a two-story patio featuring amazing views of Camelback Mountain. There will be plenty to enjoy during the game, including Dirty Chips, Animal Fries, and Pretzel Bites—perfect football munchies. 3737 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.945.3353; www.rnrscottsdale.com. If pizza is more your style, why not make plans to hang out at Bottled Blonde Pizzeria to watch the big game? The pizzeria features lots of televisions, a large patio space which has flat screen TVs, tons of craft beer, and of course, made-from-scratch pizza—a must-have treat for anyone watching football. 7340 E. Indian Plaza, Scottsdale; 480.970.1112; www.bottledblondeaz.com. If you would like something with a ton of food and beer options, Yard House might be your perfect choice. With a variety of menu items, including many different appetizers, main dishes and deserts, Yard House is a good choice if you have a big party. Also, there are multiple televisions all over the restaurant so that no matter where you sit, you can keep your eye on the big

game. At Scottsdale Fashion Square, 7014 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.675.9273; www.yardhouse.com. Duke’s Sports Bar and Grill might be just the place you are looking for if you are hoping to hang with many sports-minded friends. Voted one of Scottsdale’s favorites for many years in a row, Duke’s is a great place to head to for the big game. Food, drinks and plenty of televisions for everyone to cheer on their favorite team—Duke’s will be one happening place come Feb. 1. 7607 E. McDowell Road, Scottsdale; 480.675.9724; www.dukessportsbar.com. Another great location to check out is Blue 32 Sports Grill. This hot spot actually has two locations in Scottsdale, so it’s very convenient for those living in both the east and northeast Valley. With so many menu options to select from, including appetizers, wraps, burgers, and more, this is a great place to catch the game with friends and family. There is even a nice-sized kids menu. Also, there is plenty of draft beer, cocktails and wine to select from, as well. 7293 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.284.5350; and 7000 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix; 480.621.3080. www.blue32sportsgrill.com. While there are so many locations to select from for the big game, don’t wait to make your choice or you could find yourself with a big penalty for delay of game and a fun time with friends.

LIP IMPLANT

The most popular method of lip augmentation involves the injection of a soft tissue filler to plump the lips. This procedure is done with topical or local anesthesia to ensure comfort. The filler is placed along the lip lines, with extra care taken to preserve a natural appearance. Injections are placed to augment the upper lip, lower lip and Cupid’s bow.

Soft, solid silicone naturally contoured implant with a smooth, non-porous surface. Cannot rupture or deflate and may be removed at any time. Corresponds to the dimensions of the lip. Available in a variety of diameters and lengths to accommodate the uniqueness of each person’s lip characteristics, tapering at both ends to conform naturally to the normal lip.

f you’ve ever driven around the northeast corner of the Loop 101, you’ve seen the signs for Taliesin West. But, if you’re like many locals, you’ve never taken the time to check it out or find out what it even is. For starters, did you know that the original Taliesin is located in Wisconsin? “Put simply, Taliesin is the source,” reads www.taliesinpreservation.org. “The ideas, concepts, theories and techniques applied to every structure that bears Frank Lloyd Wright’s imprint had their genesis here. Wright used Taliesin as a kind of sketch pad... a laboratory where ideas emerged, were given form, were tested and refined. The ideas that emerged there Wright applied to the buildings upon which his reputation rests.” As for Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright began building this desert masterpiece in 1937 as his personal winter home, studio, and architectural campus. Located in the beautiful Sonoran desert in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in Northeast Scottsdale, the site offers a broad range of guided public tours. Visitors experience Wright’s brilliant ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces. “Visitors to Taliesin West are treated to a totally immersive tour experience,” says Director of Communications Jonathan West. “No space at Taliesin West is offlimits and nothing is behind ropes. Visitors

experience Taliesin West as Wright and his apprentices did—a desert retreat full of wonder and inspiration.” Though the space can be experienced by walking through and taking it all in, guides and experts enhance the

experience by pointing out details that an untrained eye might miss. “We offer a series of tours that offer different perspectives on Taliesin West,” says West. “Our Insights Tour [lasts] 90 minutes and is what we believe to be our signature tour. Those wishing to delve deeper into the Taliesin West history and Wright’s career might be interested in our three-hour Behind-The-Scenes tour. Our alwayspopular Night Lights Tour allows visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy Taliesin West during spectacular Arizona evenings, and gaze in wonder at the endless sky and the lights of the property and Valley below.” Through years of change in this part of the city, Taliesin West has remained a constant reminder of a man who graced our state with his work, and who many consider the greatest architect ever to live. “Wright’s approach to integrated design, design that celebrates and complements, rather than competes with, natural environments, profoundly shaped the architectural character of the Southwest,” says West. “His influence can be seen in public spaces, private homes, and monuments and civic structures around the state and beyond. That Taliesin West is in our backyard is astounding, and we invite locals to share in that pride with a visit soon.”

cuisine

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? Years ago in Kansas, my maternal grandmother would spend all day cooking the family dinner. Chicken, noodles, dumplings, gravy… everything made from scratch—it took all day! Then she did the dishes! I said to myself, this woman is my hero, she puts a lot of LOVE into every dish, every roll of the dough, every cut of the knife, every time she opens the oven! Someday, I will be able to cook as good as she does... I still have not, in my estimation, attained that level! WHY THE NAME “JALAPEÑO INFERNO?” The original Jalapeño Mexican Café took a dramatic turn when we expanded the first time. What we were doing deserved a new name, something sexy, something spicy, and thus, Jalapeño Inferno was born! HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE CUISINE HERE? Modern Sonoran Mexican cuisine—traditional Sonoran with a dramatic modern twist. We stay true to our roots but keep in touch with modern culinary trends and try to meet the needs of our customer.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU IS… Chorizo Street Taco Lettuce Wraps. Street tacos are very trendy, and kind of overdone today. We stay true to the roots of traditional street tacos, but apply a local, hip twist. Schreiner’s sausage in Phoenix has been on the same corner since post-World War II, making traditional German sausage for the neighbors. They are making, what we think, is the best example of Spanish/ Mexican chorizo sausage in the universe. We buy it ground, grill it, do nothing to season it, and pair it with fresh butter lettuce wraps for a simple taco. Amazing!

THE ONE INGREDIENT YOU PROBABLY USE MOST IS… Fresh poblano chilies. They’re very versatile, very Mexican, and available all year round. They’re found everywhere on our menu. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF YOU’D PROBABLY BE… Easiest question of all! A rock ’n’ roll photojournalist... I have no musical talent but have a die-hard passion for rock ’n’ roll! Would have loved to been there documenting history. Go ahead, challenge me to a game of rock ’n’ roll trivia! Jalapeño Inferno recently opened at DC Ranch on Market Street, 20825 N. SWEET SIPS The Bubbly Blonde is “light and fun” BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

“W

e were getting creative behind the bar with our house-infused St. Germain and found the flavors worked well with citrus,” explains Erin Fohn, creative director at Hopdoddy Burger Bar. “Made up of house-infused St. Germain, lemon, orange and bubbles, we wanted the Bubbly Blonde to be the go-to drink for those looking for something sweet and light.” Offered as one of the fun cocktails on the Sips for Grown Folks menu, the drink ($7) comes with the same options as all the others on the menu—you can “make it local” for an extra dollar, or organic for an extra $2. “This drink is light and fun (just like your favorite bubbly blonde buddy), but of course, the name was inspired by its light golden color and splash of sparkling wine,” says Fohn. As for what it pairs best with? “While the Bubbly Blonde stands alone just fine, it pairs perfectly with our Thunderbird Burger, which is made with chicken, Tillamook pepper jack, applesmoked bacon, avocado, seared poblanos, pico de gallo, and chipotle mayo,” she shares. Indeed, a perfect meal. Hopdoddy Burger Bar is open Sun.Thurs., 11 a.m.-10 p.m., and Fri. and Sat., 11 a.m.-10 p.m. 11055 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.348.2337; www.hopdoddy.com.

BY JIM PRUETER

t’s been the best-selling truck in the United States for the last 37 years straight and the best-selling vehicle—car or truck—for the past 17 years. So successful is the Ford F-150 pickup that someone in the U.S. buys a new F-150 every 41 seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Last year, Ford sold so many F-150s that if you lined them up bumperto-bumper, they would stretch from Los Angeles to New York City. Still, you say you’re not buying a pickup… ever! While that may be true, Ford’s new F-150 could still change your life for the better. To begin, all automakers are facing tough new fuel-economy standards that require them to virtually double their fleetwide average to 54.5 miles per gallon by SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_96_97Wheels_Jan15.indd 96

96

2025. And, if fully one-third of your sales come from gas-guzzling pickup trucks like they do at Ford Motor Company, you’ve got a real challenge on your hands. Since 2009, Ford has been secretly testing all-aluminum-body pickup trucks, combined with expensive high-strength steel frames. That cut the truck’s weight by 770 pounds over its predecessor. Fewer pounds allow smaller engines to get excellent performance, and to consume less fuel. As a result, the new F-150 averages about five to 20 percent better fuel economy. Spread that savings across about 700,000 trucks sold per year over the last decade, and that amounts to millions of gallons of gas saved. There aren’t enough Toyota Priuses to come even close to saving that much gas. However, all the buzz about the aluminum structure has overshadowed other fantastic changes Ford made to the truck, like massaging seats, 360-degree cameras for parking, and off-roading assistance. And, payload and towing capacities are substantially higher, courtesy of the lower vehicle weight. There’s also a roomier cabin, bigticket safety items, smarter technology with Ford’s Sync voice command systems, and a tailgate that lowers via a button on the key fob. With the Park Assist option, the F-150 can even park itself. So while your next new car may not be an F-150, analysts seem to agree that the business case for aluminum will turn out to be one of the smartest moves in automotive history. For now, competitors are watching from the sidelines—but don’t be surprised if your next new car is made out of aluminum. Automotive writer Jim Prueter is a spokesperson for AAA, and his auto reviews and travel stories appear nationally in print and online. ooking for paradise? It’s right here, at Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas (www.atlantisbahamas.com). Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway where you can lay on the beach, relax at a spa, and be pampered to the point where you feel like royalty, or you’re seeking a family adventure complete with water slides, river rides, an aquarium and adventures, Atlantis offers the ultimate getaway. Here, you’ll experience luxury redefined, a place that has something for everyone, from honeymooners to families to those just seeking the ultimate getaway experience. Amidst exquisite architecture, lush

foliage, and expanses of pools, oceans and water experiences, there is no detail that hasn’t been thought of here. Want to simply relax? Grab a spot on the pristine white sand beach, or at one of the many gorgeous pools. When you’re ready for some adventure, head over to Aquaventure, the resort’s 141-acre water park. There are high-speed water slides, a mile-long river ride (with rapids!), and more—think a water slide that takes you via a tunnel through an aquarium complete with sharks, a slide with a 60-foot almost vertical drop, and so much more. If you’re traveling with young kids, they’ll enjoy the Mayan-themed children’s pool and water playground. The Dig area of the resort lets you explore the streets and tunnels that represent the lost city of Atlantis while viewing amazing marine life exhibits, from six-foot Moray Eels to venomous Indo-Pacific Ocean Lionfish. There’s also a touch tank aquarium filled with conch, starfish, sea urchins, crabs and horseshoe crabs. Always dreamed of interacting with dolphins or sea lions? You can do that, too, at the resort’s Dolphin Cay, a 14-acre marine habitat and dolphin rescue-rehabilitation facility. Other water activities include snorkeling, scuba, snuba, walking on the bottom of the Shark Exhibit (with special protective gear, of course!), and JANUARY 2015 |

interacting with stingrays. For those whose interests lie beyond the water, there is a spa, Tom Weiskopf-designed championship golf course, a pottery studio, rock climbing, tennis, a movie theatre, and a library. For foodies in search of top-notch cuisine, there are 21 restaurants, including Chef Bobby Flay’s award-winning Mesa Grill, and 19 bars and lounges. For nightlife, break out your dancing shoes and head to Aura Nightclub, a 9,000-square-foot Jeffrey Beers-designed nightclub or Dragon’s, Atlantis’s ultra-lounge. The accommodations, too, encompass all needs. There are six locations to choose from, and they range from a relaxed tropical ambience to sheer luxury. For those who want the ultimate best, the Bridge Suite at the Royal Towers sits 16 stories high (it bridges the two Royal Towers), is 4,740 square feet, has 10 rooms, boasts a 22-karat gold chandelier, and has a permanent staff of seven. Truly, this is a destination for everyone.

magine a miniature landscape, complete with cliffs, waterfalls, streams, plants, and more, right in your living room. Or your dining room. Or your office. Or any other indoor space. “I love mixing up art and science!” explains Robert Dekker, who co-owns Plantaria—a company that creates miniature indoor watergardens—with his son, Stephen. “Creating a product that allows my clients to garden 365 days a year has been very rewarding for me. Additionally, the miniature scale of this garden allows people to continue gardening long after they are no longer able to physically handle gardening outdoors.” The Dekkers founded Planteria as a way to bring the beauty of nature indoors on a miniature scale. “My educational background is in botany and forestry,” Robert explains. “My last 30 years have been spent building water gardens in the landscape setting. I also enjoy woodworking. All of these disciplines coalesced and condensed into the concept of an indoor miniaturized landscape. The landscape has to be in scale, has to be housed in an aesthetically pleasing compartment, and has to be as self-sufficient as possible. Timer-controlled irrigation, lighting, and water features all were part of the challenge.” The gardens the Dekkers create are 365-day-a-year indoor gardens that are illuminated by LED/fluorescent lighting. They are six feet horizontal, with a two-foot depth. The actual “window” dimension is six feet by 20 inches. Typically, they take one to two months to build, with careful consideration taken to group trees of the same species, add naturalized rock formations and water features, and more. The garden requires watering and care similar to an outdoor garden—and offers just as much, if not more, beauty. The gardens begin at $30,000. For more information, visit www.plantaria.net.

ou think of them as your children and very rarely like to leave the house without them. If you could bring them to work, they would be by your side every day of the week. If you could take them out to dinner with you—oh, wait! You can! While not all restaurants welcome your canine companions, there are some really great pet-friendly patios around town to choose from. Whether or not you drop a morsel or two under the table is completely up to you.

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” –Roger Caras K O’Donnell’s Sports Bar & Grill 14850 N. Northsight Blvd., Scottsdale 480.922.7200; www.kodonnells.com Have a pup that loves football as much as you? Bring them down to K O’Donnell’s to watch the game with you on their extra-large patio. The comfortable area features an extensive misting system for those dog days of summer and hardworking heaters in the colder months. There are also a number of TVs on the patio, and in the event that things get a little noisy, the wait staff will happily bring a speaker to your table so you can hear your game. There are so many options on the menu that you will easily find something for everyone. Their Loaded Nachos make for the perfect game day fare; piled high with melted cheddar and jack cheeses, refried beans, jalapeños, onions, tomatoes, black olives and sour cream. You can add in chicken, steak or chorizo for a little more bite.

Kale & Clover: Mindful Kitchen 20511 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale 480.397.9585; www.kaleandclover.com Whether you pop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you and your pooch will always be welcome at Kale & Clover. You will both enjoy the clean and modern setting, as well as the carefully crafted menu. A huge emphasis is put on using responsibly sourced and seasonal ingredients, as well as those ingredients with nutritional benefits and flavor profiles. The mostly vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu offers items that will appeal to even the most persnickety of eaters (although, you always have the option of adding your choice of protein to their dishes). The Avocado Summer Rolls are the perfect introduction to this clean meal, made with pickled vegetables, just the right amount of mint, and house made sambas. For something to stick to your ribs, but not your hips, try their Seared Salmon, which is served with red quinoa, marinated cherry tomatoes and avocado, and dressed with a light herb vinaigrette.

Taggia 4925 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.424.6095; www.taggiascottsdale.com Taggia is one of those restaurants that allows you to check off a number of categories. They offer amazing Italian-inspired cuisine in a beautiful setting. The environment is the perfect backdrop for everything from a casual business meeting to a romantic dinner, depending on where you sit. Need to pop in and out for a quick work week lunch, with or without clients to entertain? If so, they have a special Power Lunch menu. Best of all, if you’re out and JANUARY 2015 |

about with your furry four-legged friend, you can have lunch on their pet-friendly patio in comfort, day or night. If you are looking to linger over some deserving dishes, the Gnocchi option is an exciting combination of potato gnocchi, pork belly, green beans, delicate fontina, and pistachio. The gnocchi are surprisingly light, and the complexity of the flavors is bound to please the most demanding of taste buds.

The Standard Kitchen & Cocktails 10050 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.393.3801; www.thestandardfreshkitchen.com You and your pooch will be right at home on the expansive patio at The Standard—the plush couches and chairs provide a great place to relax and share a meal with friend, both the furry and furfree kind. The menu features many offerings that sound like typical fare, but upon further investigation, you’ll find that each dish has been given its own unique flair. The Deviled Eggs are made with pickled shallots, herbed goat cheese and fresh dill. In the mood for some tacos? The Duck Confit Tacos aren’t a typical option. The rich flavor of the duck is elevated by the addition of apple slaw, orange chili gastrique, and shaved manchego. Though you may not want to share with Fido, you both will certainly enjoy the Brisket Enchilada entrée. The enchiladas are made with tender brisket, green chile, a light but flavorful butternut squash purée that imparts a little sweetness, cojita cheese and yes, a fried egg, all nestled in a corn tortilla. You may want to keep that one to yourself—it would be hard to get your pooch back on kibble after that!

Summit Diner 32531 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.575.6562; www.summitdineraz.com Out for a morning run with man’s best friend and find that you are both in need of a rest and maybe a bite to eat? Summit Diner will hit the spot whether you are looking for a healthy option or a more comforting choice. Looking for something on the lighter side? Start your day off with one of Summit’s omelets made with egg whites. The Greek Omelet is a great choice; the gyro meat imparts a special layer of flavor to the taste that you are used to, along with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and a bit of feta cheese. The Vegetarian Scramble is also a great light option, created with just about every fresh vegetable that you can think of. In the interest of fairness, sometimes a comfort meal is in order and this menu has you covered on that end of the spectrum, as well. From Eggs Benedict to Crepes, Biscuits and Gravy or French Toast, decadence abounds. | SO SCOTTSDALE!

O

ver the past decade, Arizona winemaking has transformed into a respected, multi-million dollar industry. Reports of the White House sipping on Arizona wines, coupled with news that multiple James Beard House Dinners have featured local brands, only amplify–and expedite–its popularity nationwide. So, as Arizona winemakers work toward planting as many as 1,300 acres over the next year, it begs the question: Which local wines are the hottest? We take a look at some of the higher-end wines now available.

border of France and Italy, this varietal is so coveted that the winery limits customers to just three bottles each. This wine was the first where the winemaker used submerged cap fermentation on a few of the components– and was a success on so many levels that the 2013 and 2014 releases will be wholly developed using the process. $65/bottle. Blend: Mainly Sangiovese with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and just a dash of Barbera.

Callaghan Vineyard–Caitlin’s 2009

Aged nearly two years in 100% new French and Polish oak, this powerful wine offers an earthy texture and spicy black fruit. Though some note it will reach its full potential in about five years, it is already a crown jewel of Callaghan’s award-winning bottles. $50/ bottle. Blend: 60% Petit Verdot, 40% Merlot, and both Cabernets.

Pillsbury Wine Company—2012 Guns & Kisses

This intense co-ferment from Sam Pillsbury’s Estate high-altitude grown vines is its finest ever. The winemaker hung the fruit four weeks longer than usual, hand-harvested and fermented it with native yeasts, then aged it 12 months in neutral oak. The result? Explosive intensity. $55/bottle. Blend: 94.5% Shiraz, 2.5% Symphony, 3% Grenache.

Alcantar –2012 Confluence

The flavor is as deep and rich as the color–not to mention well balanced to even the most discerning palates. $40/bottle. Blend: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot.

Page Springs Cellars–2012 ECIPS

With this special blend, the brain trust at Page Springs began by setting aside the spiciest Arizona-grown wines from each of the batches in the cellar and setting out to create a blend made famous in Southern France. And its odd name? An acronym given by wine club members, short for “Enjoy ’Cause It’s Practically Sex.” Enough said. $32/bottle. Blend: 28% Syrah, 27% Mourvedre, 22% Grenache, 9% Petite Sirah, 7% Counoise, 7% Tannat.

Javalina Leap–2012 Legacy Zinfandel

Old World-style wine from seven-year-old vines. The taste is fruit-forward and jammy, and clearly meant to be paired with meats, with hints of chocolate and a touch of pepper left on the tongue. $55/bottle. Blend: No blend here—100% estate Zinfandel grapes.

And he might be onto something–this was among the wines honored by the Arizona Republic and Arizona Wine Growers Association as a “Wine of Distinction.” $40/bottle. Blend: 100% Petite Syrah aged in American oak.

Arizona Stronghold–2010 Lozen

An award-winning wine a dozen times over that almost wasn’t. In 2010, the winery suffered both frost and heat damage, which ripened the grapes ahead of schedule. The result was a lower alcohol level, but an exponentially darker, richer final product. $40/bottle. Blend: 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 14% Malbec

The tender tuna and crunchy carrot ginger slaw create a perfect bite and the Sriracha mayo brings a little bit of heat to match the sweetness of the carrots. 10050 N. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
