For the third year in a row, President Donald J. Trump declared the month of November National Veterans and Military Families Month. He issued a presidential proclamation Oct. 25.

“I encourage all communities, all sectors of society and all Americans to acknowledge and honor the service, sacrifices and contributions of veterans and military families for what they have done and for what they do every day to support our great Nation,” the proclamation stated.

Jody Addison is the new manager of Veteran’s Services at Richland. The retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel said the proclamation is “not so much appreciation necessarily but more importantly veteran’s awareness.”

“A lot of folks seem to focus their appreciation on Veteran’s Day and forget about other issues going on in veteran’s everyday lives, even student veterans particularly here at Richland. Having a whole month to reflect on that and accent these issues to me is be even better. I look forward to new programs being implanted and I can’t wait to dig into them and see how they can help veterans here at Richland College,” Addison said.

Richland student and Air Force Staff Sergeant Devin Johnson offered a similar sentiment.

“There are veterans who are worse off than I am; some who have lost their lives, families broken, lost limbs and legs and even sometimes their minds. I understand that there can

be an appreciation month, but you have to go back to the history of what the day actually meant. When you do say it is an actual month, it’s not necessarily about the month but actually solving a problem,” Johnson said.

Richard Miller, father of Chronicle entertainment editor Ricky Miller, was a sergeant in the Army Infantry during the Vietnam War. He was part of a group known as the “hard-core recondos” who fought in the Mekong River Delta.

Miller was a cartographer (map maker) who also served in sniper security where he earned his CIB (combat infantry badge). He worked as a radio operator and was awarded three bronze stars for his service.

“We used to go out in six-man teams and were the forerunners of Seal Team 6, Black Ops, Delta Force and all that. We did all the stuff first,” Miller said.

Miller’s service was documented in the book “Steel my Soldiers’ Hearts,” authored by his commander, Colonel David H. Hackworth, who was awarded 10 silver stars in Vietnam.

The idea of celebrating a Veterans appreciation month, rather than a day, began with the Obama administration in 2016, according to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN).

New law advances rape-kit backlog Nabeela Iqbal Staff Writer “Rape culture is fueled by any movie, TV show, advertisement [or] picture you see that desensitizes the viewer to rape,” said Kendra Unruh, a Richland English and gender studies professor who spoke at the event. “So, if we as a culture are consuming images of women being objectified or hearing jokes about rape or seeing these sorts of things in film and especially music videos, we start to become numb to the seriousness of rape and that can lead to a real-world impact like the rape kit backlog.”

Equity Richland presented the second part of its ongoing series about rape culture based on the documentary “I am Evidence.” The program, in partnership with the Office of Student Life, took place Nov. 5 and 6 in the Brazos Gallery.

“I am Evidence” focuses on the nationwide rape-kit backlog. A rape kit is DNA evidence collected from the body of the male or female victim of a sexual assault. The documentary follows stories from different cities and efforts to begin clearing that backlog.

During the session, students were free to ask questions of the four speakers. The primary focus of the discussion was rape culture, how it affects society and the causes of rapekit backlog.

Josue Mulumba Katchy, second year Richland student, watched the documentaryn before attending the discussion.

“It was actually pretty interesting because I kind of had my own idea about rape before watching the movie,” he said. “And after that, I think that it did influence me in a good way and as a man, made me see rape from a different perspective.”

Rape culture involves the trivialization of sexual assault that causes people to ignore it, joke about it or think it’s something that only happens in dark alleys. In the U.S., one in five women and one in 71 men have reportedly been raped at some point in their lives, according to the National Sexual Violence Research Center.

Victim blaming is also part of rape culture.

That means faulting a woman for what she wore, drank or how she behaved instead of blaming the rapist.

“Because we blame the victim or we don’t take blame that seriously, it’s easier for us to put these rape kits on a shelf and to forget about them. It’s easier for us to not pay attention when things are going on in society,” Unruh said.

According to the documentary, only 40% of rapes are reported and only 10% ever lead to an arrest. Only three in 100 reported rapes lead to arrests, convictions and incarcerations.

Lavinia Masters is a life coach, author, rape survivor and an advocate for pursuing the

rape-kit backlog plaguing the nation. Masters, who was raped at knife-point at a young age, shared her experience, which unfortunately led to emotional and physical trauma.

“I had no idea who he was, where he came from or why he chose me,” Masters said, speaking about her attacker with Richland students. “There were other instances where I faced men trying to rape me, so that had me thinking now that this stigma was following me, like I am supposed to be raped, I am supposed to be attacked. Why can’t I stop this?”

It took years for her to heal emotionally from the trauma she experienced. Part of her healing involved developing the mindset that she had to work to prevent sexual assault from happening to others or, at the least, to educate and empower victims, she said.

In 2005, Masters was ready to find out the identity of her attacker. During that process, she learned that the rape kit taken the night of her attack was sitting on a shelf, uninvestigated 21 years later.

“I was not prepared for that,” Masters said.

“I stood there and I was very angry, but I had to remember everything I had been through and what I was fighting for.”

After reopening the case, it took Dallas police nine months to get a lead on her attacker.

He was a serial rapist who had been in and out of prison but was not registered as a sex offender. The state of Texas had allowed him to plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Masters was informed that, because of a “statute of limitations,” she couldn’t prosecute her attacker. If the rapist had been found five years after the attack, or even 10 years after the victim turned 18, he couldn’t be prosecuted.

Masters had passed both of those deadlines, which was a huge blow to her. At the conclusion of her case, Masters decided to become the face of a national effort to eliminate the rape-kit backlog.

“Although I couldn’t prosecute, I decided this wasn’t about me. This was greater than me,” she said. “I wanted a change.”

What followed was a long journey of trying to get justice for victims of rape and sexual assault. Masters began working with State Rep. Victoria Neave on a bill to eliminate the rapekit backlog in Texas. Neave insisted on naming the bill after Masters. On May 23, the Lavinia Masters Act was unanimously approved by the Texas Legislature.

“I am excited to be the voice of the Lavinia Masters Act,” said Masters. “This Act is a great thing because you are telling the victims in Texas that we didn’t forget about you and we will never forget about you. Again, as long as I am alive, I am going to make sure no victim is forgotten about or left behind.”

For Purity Onochie, first year Richland student, the discussion left a lasting impression.

“This is a big thing,” Onochie said. “They were talking about resources that are available for those that are survivors. This event can help a lot of students and not just students.

It can help friends of friends of friends, you can never tell. So, this kind of thing should be held more often. People should know about it. It shouldn’t be something that we’re forced to come to.”

Storm recovery classes are being offered for victims of the Oct. 20 tornado outbreak in Dallas County. The tuitionfree continuing education sessions will be offered at Richland from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Sabine Hall, SH118.

Those who are interested can sign up for single classes, multi-sessions, half or full-day sessions. ‘Midway’ hits the mark Ricky Miller Entertainment Editor

At first glance, one would think Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow”) was changing his mind about directing big-budget disaster movies, but with “Midway” he executes a decent film that actually captivates.

I was surprised by the immersive quality of this production. One feels like they too are part of the mission when a character bombs his target.

Emmerich has tried, at times, to divert attention from his resume. “Anonymous” (2008), his attempt to shift gears and do something off the beaten path, just blew up in his face.

So readers know, I gave it a C when I originally reviewed it.

With the new release of “Midway,” Emmerich tries to weave as much as he can into his tableau to make audiences grasp the levity of the war. He even manages to squeeze in a small nod to Pearl Harbor.

Patrick Wilson plays Edwin Layton, who plans for operations with the army. Woody Harrelson plays Admiral Chester Nimitz, a tough-as-nails soldier who values other people’s opinions when they are warranted.

Another major part of the story is EdSkrein’s Lieutenant Richard “Dick” Best, a rugged fighter pilot who knows the ins-andouts of flying his plane and has a desire to

return home to his family, including Mandy Moore’s Annie Best.

Emmerich made this film engaging and memorable. He never lets it slip into the doldrums. The pacing is smooth and the events are never overdramatized.

Emmerich’s “Midway” is actually an improvement over what director Jack Smight did with the 1976 story of the famed battle.

Thanks to the advancements in modern day technology, Emmerich has crafted a tale with a dynamic that is more fluid, faster paced and altogether riveting.

Also worthy of mention is the always cool and reliable Dennis Quaid as William “Bull” Halsey. His screen time, however, is limited to just a few scenes. Aaron Eckhart as Jimmy Dolittle is also commendable, but he suffers the same fate as Quaid in that his presence is not required for the whole film.

Seeing Luke Evans as soldier Wade McClusky was nifty. He frequently performs in big-budget adaptations such as Paul W. S. Anderson’s retelling of “The Three Musketeers” (2011) and the little seen “Dracula Untold” in 2014. With his American accent, Wade is spot on. Most Americans won’t guess his British background.

“Midway” is not a great war movie, but it makes this ensemble tale worthwhile for a bigscreen experience.

Art takes a geometric turn Barbara Gandica Martinez Design Editor “My work is entirely conceptual, [and] that means it’s completely inventive,” Dallas artist Lane Banks said. “I don’t start with a perception of an image.”

Banks’ exhibit “Squares and Stripes” combined two ongoing series of acrylic paintings on canvas, “Concentric Squares” and “Horizontal Stripes.” Like the names imply, his work explores geometrical relationships within square and horizontal canvasses. Banks’ artwork focuses on the exploration of mathematical elements through painting.

“I start by writing down a series of numbers and the proportions of the elements of the painting that I work with. Then it becomes a drawing,” Banks said.

He then proceeds to the painting process, building up layers of thin acrylic washes to keep the canvas surface as flat as possible.

Banks’ current artwork tends to have a monochromatic palette.

“I use the grey because I want to keep the association with color out of the image. It is more about the repetition of forms and shapes. And to keep it in more of an abstract level, to reduce it to the simplest level as possible,” he said.

Banks intends his work to speak for itself and have an anonymous quality. His pieces

Some of his pieces feature straight lines that play with the viewer’s sense of perspective and defy spatial depth.

“So far, I haven’t worked with curves. I think they become too natural or too organic,” he said.

Banks works without a preconceived notion of how his painting is going to end up. “The size of the work governs how the work will feel,” he said.

He allows the mathematical proportions and the size of the canvas to lead the process.

“There’s a difference between abstract and abstraction,” he said. “This is abstractive this truly conceptual work. An abstraction starts with a perception and its distilled downed to an essence. It even might be recognizable to its source.”

In addition to his acrylic paintings, Banks has produced terrazzo floors that are permanently exhibited at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport. His artworks are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas, which specializes in abstract art and the MADI movement.

‘Outer Worlds’ offers gamers other-worldly excitement Jack Ramirez Bernal Managing Editor It’s been nine years since game development company Obsidian Entertainment introduced gamers to the radiated wasteland of the Mojave Desert in “Fallout: New Vegas.”

As the successor to their magnum opus, Obsidian released “The Outer Worlds” on Oct. 25, taking players on a wild adventure through the cosmos.

The game centers on a dystopian future where corrupt corporations compete for dominance over the space colonies in the Halcyon system. They act as the central form of government, controlling every aspect of life from how the colonists live and what jobs they take, to their eligibility for medical aid and even death arrangements. Nothing is certain without the corporation’s approval.

As the protagonist and captain of The Unreliable, the player and his/her crew make choices throughout the game that will shape the fate of the galaxy. Will they be the hero who fights tyranny, a madman who brings chaos or maybe something entirely different?

Obsidian is no stranger to good releases with games such as “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II” (2004), “South Park: The Stick of Truth” (2014) and the aforementioned “Fallout: New Vegas,” Obsidian has earned its reputation for skillful storytelling and impressive game development.

“The Outer Worlds” is no exception, although the game may have the familiar “Fallout” aesthetic of an open world roll-playing game (RPG) at the beginning for some.

It’s still Obsidian’s style, meaning the game will not be riddled with bugs. In less than an hour, players meet interesting characters and begin to unveil the mysteries behind the corporations and the colonies.

Players can decide to level up specialization perks, such as charisma or intelligence, which has a significant effect on how to complete quests. From blazing guns to a more diplomatic approach, players gain a sense of freedom and importance at every opportunity.

The key feature that fosters a sense of independence is how each player can create his or her own signature style of gameplay.

The game will not punish any creative, even ridiculous, variations. The fact that players can countlessly experiment is what gives “The Outer Worlds” not only its charm, but its appeal for more play time.

Gameplay mechanics are not disappointing.

Having played on a PC, the controls for how characters interact and fight enemies feel wellexecuted.

There will be a familiar feeling for those who have played “New Vegas,” but there are noticeable improvement. Weapons feel more accurate and sturdy. Enemies pose challenge depending on the level of diffuculty. With modification and repair mechanics, threre’s

room for strategic gamplay.

Despite the praise, there are some drawbacks. Primarily, the lack of customization.

There’s a limited variety of weapons and clothing designs, plus a not-so-thorough character-creator menu.

Additionally, while the game has good open-world elements with stunning enviroments and plentiful missions, there is a lack of extraneous encounters unless it’s scripted for a specific quest.

In spite of the drawbacks, “The Outer Worlds” is a well-crafted game and a welcome addition to any game library.

Just like in the old days of gaming, “The Outer Worlds” is a reminder of a period where developers did not make games to appease businessmen in suits, but rather people who understand and take great pleasure in gaming.

“The Outer Worlds” seems to have a promising future. With an excellent presentation, this title makes Obsidian a worthy rival for Bethesda Game Studios.

As a personal fan of RPG games, Obsidian’s new release wins a high rank of approval from this reviewer.

Flu shots fight winter illness Joyce Jackson Copy Editor Every year, a number of people end up getting the flu. That can be avoided by getting a flu shot. The vaccine is offered every fall beginning in mid-September but, even for those who get the shot, it takes a while for it to take effect.

“It takes a full two weeks to get the antibodies in your body to fight the flu,” said Carolyn White, registered nurse and senior manager of the Richland Health Center.

White said although people may think they have the flu, they can’t be sure until they’re tested. She said incidents of the flu have been minimal in Dallas County so far this year.

“There are different strains of the flu,” White said. They have to research and figure out which one it is. They have not sent out much information yet. They usually tell us where the heaviest cases are. It starts in October.”

Ana Martinez, a part-time registered nurse at the Richland Health Center, said it’s called the “influenza virus.”

She said it’s a respiratory virus that occurs during the fall. Sometimes, it seems to be a cold and progresses into body aches and fever.

Martinez described flu symptoms as “a sudden fever, meaning 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit.”

It’s usually the first onset followed by body aches and feeling like you just got run over, depending on the strain. Sometimes one can have nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, she said.

Some people think the flu shot might make them sick. That’s a misconception.

“The vaccine is not active. It’s not alive.

It takes up to two weeks to kind of get those antibodies in your body to start protecting you,” Martinez said. “There are several strains, not just one or two types but many.”

She went on to say that you can get the flu from strains that are not protected by the vaccine.

White said that the flu shot has elements in it that people can be allergic to.

“If [the shot] has an element of eggs in it, some people can be allergic to it, although they do have vaccines now that are eggless,” White said. There are variables in it that people can be allergic to and have more of a reaction to, she said. So that’s why anybody giving the flu shot has to fill out paper work and go over any allergies they have.

Both White and Martinez agree that everyone should get the flu shot every year.

“That’s what we’re highly recommending,” White said. The age groups most susceptible to getting the flu are those over 65, young kids and school-age children.

“There have been no cases of the flu reported at Richland,” White said, but she did say that seven cases of flu have been reported in children at Cook Children’s [Medical Center] and seven cases at Children’s Medical Center [Dallas].

“It was influenza A,” she said. “A is a different strain than B.

They are supposedly immunized for A and B within the flu shots.”

White went on to say that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people over 65 years old and those who work in the healthcare industry get the flu shot.

White said The Richland Health Center held six flu shot clinics on campus this fall. White said no additional flu shot clinics are scheduled to take place on campus this year.

“If flu season seems to be kicking in in Dallas County they [the county] will put out notifications that we have many cases, or that somebody has died from it,” White said. “That’s when they will come back to give more shots.”

The Health Center is located in Thunderduck Hall, T110. They’re open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Testing is open to students, employees and members of the community who are 18 and over with a picture ID. HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, can get into a person’s cells and attack the immune system. This disease specifically attacks the T-Cells (CD4 cells) that fight infection.

Protection is key because there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. Unlike some viruses, the human body cannot get rid of HIV completely.

Treatment can put the disease into remission, but once HIV is contracted, it remains in the body for life.

HIV can be contracted through sexual intercourse, needle usage, vaginal and rectal fluids, breast milk, pre-seminal fluid, semen and blood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those who are HIVnegative and contract a sexually transmitted

disease (STD) are three times as likely to get HIV if they have unprotected sex with someone who has the virus.

The HIV superinfection is even more dangerous. This strain of the disease involves a person with HIV who becomes infected with another strain. This combination can cause a person to become sicker much faster. The HIV superinfection is also resistant to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Those who are susceptible to the disease should use condoms and clean needles to lower the risk of contracting this disease and any others.

Testing will be offered on campus from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and Dec. 4 in Thunderduck Hall, Room 110. The rapid test yields results in as little as 10 minutes. Results are confidential.

Obase-Wotta Kammonke Staff Writer The Richland Thunderducks hope to repeat last year’s glory and defend their crown when they travel to New York for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) soccer national finals, Nov 14-17.

“A lot of the teams will be after us. Obviously we have a bulls-eye on our back and that’s been all season. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time,” said Raul Herrera, Richland’s head coach of men’s soccer.

Richland booked its place at the nationals after weathering back-to-back district playoff games in the blistering cold at Triton College pitch in River Grove, Ill., 20 miles east of Chicago on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.

The first game was a semifinal matchup against Schoolcraft College. It was an

uncharacteristically drab performance by the Thunderducks. Richland struggled to find opportunities and the match was sluggish for extended periods. By the end of the first half, neither team had registered a goal.

As the game drew to a close, Richland sprung to life. The Thunderducks intensified their play in the latter stages of the second half. Takayoshi Wyatt was Richland’s liveliest attacking threat, but his finish was lackluster.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Richland players launched a barrage and attacked Schoolcraft’s defense. Wyatt was left unmarked and found an inkling of space in the opposition penalty area. He took a touch and shot the ball straight at Kieran Malachino, Schoolcraft’s goalkeeper.

Malachino couldn’t hold on to ball and he parried it back into the danger zone where Richland’s Lorenzo Boselli was on hand to rebound it into the net. Richland held onto the slim 1-0 lead to advance to the district finals.

Herrera said the harsh temperature might have contributed to Richland’s sluggish display in the semifinals, but they overcame it.

“I am glad we got the results. The kids fought through. It wasn’t easy,” Herrera said.

“You’ve got to give them [Schoolcraft College] credit. You know, they had a game plan. We played them last year. They played more defensive to limit our opportunities, but at the end of the day, sometimes you need the ball bounced your way. It wasn’t, but towards the end it finally did.”

Richland played Triton College in the district finals. From the onset, Richland was unrelenting, attacking with the fervor they displayed throughout the regular season. Five minutes into the game, they were rewarded with the opening goal.

Mariano Fazio booted a long ball over the top, disrupting Triton’s defensive shape. Wyatt intercepted a scuffed clearance from a Triton defender and drove towards goal. He took the ball around the grasp of the onrushing goalkeeper and squared it for Gabriel Rojas to tap into the net.

Rojas, sophomore, has been on the periphery during his two seasons at Richland. Herrera gave him a rare start in the final and Rojas repaid the coach’s faith in him with the opener.

“He’s got a great attitude. He’s played in a lot of games. He has a lot of experience.

You know, when you play back-to-back games, fresh legs are always a positive. So, I think his hard work, not just in that game, but throughout his time here at Richland. [It] has paid off.

I was proud of him and I was happy for him,” Herrera said.

Two minutes into the second half, Wyatt caught a sleeping Triton defense. He reacted first, latching on to a low cross from Boselli to finish past the surging Triton goalkeeper.

Richland added a third goal 20 minutes later. Wyatt was at the heart of a blistering counterattack move. Thierry Assamoi punted the ball after a wave of Triton attackers swarmed the Richland box. Wyatt controlled the ball sublimely, driving towards the Triton goal and laying it off for Sergio Baena, who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

Triton got a consolation goal four minutes later. A freekick just outside Richland’s half was swung into the box. Triton attacker Michal Szaflarski leaped above the Richland defense and flicked it down for his teammate Evan Cole, who slotted it past Richland’s Pablo Cubas to give the Trojans a consolation goal.

Richland regained their three-goal advantage a few minutes later. Rene Tello capitalized on a failed clearance from Triton’s defense in the 84th minute to round out a thorough 4-1 win for Richland.

Richland plays Sussex County College in the NJCAA national quarterfinals on Nov. 14 at Wehrum Stadium, Herkimer, NY.
