The student Green Team is racking up awards for sustainability efforts that make the Richland campus clean, fresh and comfortable.

Sonia Ford, sustainability project coordinator received the Green Sustainability Award from the City of Dallas on Nov. 2. Richland President Dr. Kay Eggleston was present in Sabine Hall’s recycling center, near the bookstore, to accept the award. Eggleston then gave the award to the Green Team to recognize their work.

“This is an award that has not been given to any college here through the metroplex so, Richland College is the first to receive this new business award and this is in regards to the recycling program that we have here,” said Ford.

The award was presented by Shawndrea Smith, a coordinator from the city’s Zero Waste Management Department who gave the school a scorecard of requirements to meet in order to compete for the award. In June, Richland met the standards at the highest level, and was awarded “Gold” status. Ford is looking foward to the next challenge and has big goals for her Green Team.

“My objective is to put Richland College on the map because of all the hard work and the effort that the students have done,” said Ford.

The Green team held its own Arbor Day festivities on campus on Nov. 4. Student Green Team members planted trees on the campus. Eggelston received the Tree Campus USA plaque from the Texas A&M Forestry Service.

Ford believes her student team is made up of strong young leaders.

“I call them trailblazers because they’re very committed. They are very actively involved.

They’re go-getters.”

Also coming up on the Green Team’s agenda is a wildlife campaign starting Nov. 13.

“That whole week Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the Student Green Team are collaborating and bringing about sustainability awareness regarding feeding the wildlife and the impact that it has.”

This event will happen in El Paso Hall throughout the week to bring conservation awareness to other students.

Successful student members will be honored and awarded at Fair Park next year on Earth Day (April 22).

‘Ride’ explores the complex lives of women JOYCE JACKSON Copy Editor

When three young women set out on a cross-country road trip, there’s no telling what could become of them. One would think they’d have a nice time and enjoy each other’s company.

That’s not quite the way it happens in playwright Eric Lane’s contemporary drama, “Ride” though.

“This one’s about three young women who are going through transitions in their lives,” director and drama professor Gregory Lush, said. “It examines that in a really sympathetic way without being sentimental. I also like that it’s extremely theatrical.”

This trip concerns two young college-age women, Molly and Carrie, played by Catherine Christenson and Alanna Self, who work at a roadside vegetable market to earn money for tuition. Molly’s father has surprised her with a new car, so the two of them are excited about trying it out and decide to drive to Miami. Cori Clark plays Carrie’s 11-year-old sister, Sam, who tags along on the trip.

Little do Carrie and Sam know that Molly has a more devious reason for taking the trip.

Her family is falling apart and she is desperately seeking some answers. She has a specific evil deed in mind when they reach their destination.

Lush said Lane was very specific about the girls not having a car in the production so that the focus would be on the acting and the relationship between these characters. About half of the scenes take place in a car, but something other than that will be used.

As the play progresses, we learn that Carrie’s and Sam’s father died, yet they must deal with unresolved issues about their mother.

Lush describes “Ride” as a “coming-of-age story rather than a comedy or a tragedy.”

“Feminism is certainly a theme,” Lush said. “Feminism in the sense of empowering women to make choices and to have agency in their lives. The relationships between parents and children is a huge theme. The loss of a parent – how you deal with that, especially as a younger person is a big theme.”

Lush said this play is totally relevant in today’s society and is one of the reasons why he chose it. Also, two out of the three actors are playing their actual age and the themes are such that they would have an impact to college students; transitioning from being a child to

being an adult and making choices that will have an impact on one’s entire life.

“I think it (“Ride”) will be thought-provoking,” he said. “My hope is that people will leave with a conversation – talking about things they haven’t thought about, experiencing things in a new way, which for me is what theater is all about.”

“Ride” will run Nov. 15-18 at 7:30 p.m. in the ArenaTheater in Fannin Hall. It’s free and open to students, staff, faculty and the public.

No reservations are necessary.

Lush said this play has a fair amount of language and adult themes and is more appropriate for those 12 and over.

Not all veterans who return from duty live like royalty. The Office of Student Life started the Veterans Resources Fair two years ago to give back to veterans who are struggling. This year’s fair was held on Nov. 2, for active military members, people who have transitioned out of the military, and for anyone looking to sign-up to serve their country.

“We are here to provide our service members with referrals to help them with any emergency services needed. We also provide them with food banks, substances abuse services, and career services. It is vitally important to give them resume assistance and provide them with information on job hunting so they can pursue the career of their dreams,” said Kimberly Archer the VA coordinator.

The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs states the nation’s population of homeless veterans are predominately male with about 9% being female. The majority are single with disorders such as mental illness, substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. Homeless veteran’s make up about 11% of the U.S population and mainly consist of younger adults.

The veteran’s ages between 18-30 is approximately 5% and between 31-50 is approximately 23% of the veteran’s population.

Richland Veterans Department is here to help anyone who has become a statistic to get back on their feet. The students at the veterans fair had a lot of interest in serving in the military. They were mainly concerned about the benefits of serving. Army Recruiter Naima Bella highly encourages students to join “I have been a recruiter for over 10 years and I love it. I would encourage any student to take the personal challenge to become independent and learn who they truly are so they will have a better understanding. Not everyone who comes into the Army will have to serve in the military. You could go into the Army Reserves and you wouldn’t have to go into combat fighting but it’s your choice. You could go into the Army Reserves to get your student loans paid off, then get into a four year University and join ROTC. Anyone in ROTC is non-deployable but if you have a concern with getting deployed I would recommend anyone not to join,” she said.

The U.S Army advisors gave each person who was interested a brochure and scheduled an appointment to insure each student or adult knew the responsibilities they would have to meet and the requirements of joining before going any further. The Richland theater department took top honors at the Kenedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF).

The theater department was honored with the Directors Choice Award and the Best of Festival Award. The competition took place at Angelo State University. A majority of the schools competing were four-year universities.

Richland’s production of “Waiting for Godot,” directed by Drama Chair Andy Long, challenged other schools in the competition. Playwright Samuell Beckett won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1969 for “Godot,” was one of his most notable works which was written in 1953.

When Long was hired at Richland, he said the drama department had never participated in a festival of this magnitude. One award given to Richland was a production load-in and take-down award, which judged how well the production was unloaded and based on technical elements within a maximum of four hours.

Three Richland actors won individual acting awards: Carter Brown, Jabin Lewis and Shea Hardwick. Marissa Gutierrez also was honored for outstanding stage manager at the festival.

Richland was voted the best production from the region of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Additionally, one other award was commended by a film critic from New York and another who is a professor at the University of North Carolina.

This was Richland’s fourth year to compete in this festival. It’s the first time that one show won both awards.

“We are quite proud of that,” Long said.

Now the theater department is in what’s called a held production that requires the submission of documents. A committee then chooses six plays from the southwest region to be considered for the upcoming festival in San Angelo in March. Out of that competition, one show will be selected to travel to Washington, D.C. in April to the Kennedy Center as part of the national festival.

“Not many community colleges do, and you’re competing against universities like UT Austin and big schools,” Long said. When we go, we’re going to be ready. We’re going to try to win. We are going to compete, we're not just going to go, we’re going to go to compete,” Long said.

While working this show, Long mentally prepares the students by letting them know there is “nothing that can stop you. You are just as good if not better than these big schools. All it takes is, you do all of your work, and you focus and commit and you can be excellent. We are here to do a job.”

According to Long, Richland is the only campus in the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) that participates in the KCACTF. These prestigious awards show that the theater department is not just a Cinderella school, but a school that can compete with institutions that have a massive program and budget to match. The upcoming regional festival Richland is slated to participate in is also in San Angelo on Feb. 28 through March 3, 2018.

“Thor: Ragnarok” -- This third entry in the "Thor" series finds the banished sister Hela laying claim to the throne of Asgar. This entry is played for plenty of laughs. It also stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Tom Hiddleston and Jeff Goldblum.

Entertainment Editor Jackie Chan has been around for years, going back to the start of his career in 1971’s Bruce Lee-led action-drama “Chinese Connection.”

Chan has been a part of the American film scene for generations.

With director Martin Campbell at the helm, Chan headlines the action-drama “The Foreigner.” Chan’s character, Ngoc Minh Quan, has a teenage daughter who unexpectedly dies in a terrorist incident in Great Britain. Chan’s co-star is Pierce Brosnan as Liam Hennessy, a higher-up in the British government.

Quan wants answers about his daughter’s death but Hennessy won’t give in to his demands. Instead, Hennesy treats him as a second-class citizen, pushing him to the side because he has better things to do with his time.

All of that changes though when Quan places a bomb near Hennessy’s office, showing that he would like answers about his daughter’s death.

Essentially, this is a cat-and-mouse game with Quan trying to find answers and a way to avenge his daughter’s death.

As director, Campbell knows how to shoot action sequences. Gone are the days of bad camera angles when directors didn’t know how to film a karate fight. Campbell knows the nuances and where to place the cameras, in action sequences and when to just let the

camera observe the action. Also woven into the storyline are shades of betrayal and incest.

They add a nice touch to the story and flesh out the characters' motivations. In the end, there is quite a bit of death involved.

“The Foreigner” works in part because composer Cliff Martinez knows how to create atmosphere in his composition. It reminisces composers like Lalo Schifiran who scored movies like 1971’s “Dirty Harry” with Clint Eastwood, “Battle Creek Brawl” in 1980 and Chan’s biggest American movie to date with “Rush Hour” in 1998. Essentially, Martinez has a score that is on par with Schifiran’s compositions.

Chan received an honorary Oscar in early 2017. It was presented by one of his biggest fans, Oscar-winning writer-director Quentin Tarantino.

I met Chan when he came through Dallas on a junket for his movie “Rumble in the Bronx.” I was making a magazine titled Hong Kong Film Connection with some friends and colleagues. Issues of our magazine are in The Smithsonian Institution. This was a big deal because at the time Hong Kong was in transition from the British Empire to Chinese control. The magazine was short-lived, but significant enough to find a place in the Smithsonian.

“The Foreigner” does what it’s supposed to do by re-introducing action star Chan to an American audience. At age 63, he can still hold his own in both the action and drama.

Grade: B

“Subrbicon” -- A hefty Matt Damon stars in this pretzel-twisting black comedy-thriller that features plenty of dark angles and deaths. With Oscar winner Julianne Moore. From writers Joel and Ethan Coen, as well as George Clooney (who also directs) and Grant Heslov.

“Wonderstruck” -- Todd Haynes directs this slice-of-life tale that looks at a young boy named Ben (Oakes Fegley) whose life intersects with a story from the past.

Dia de los Muertos honors Mexican culture at RLC Staff Writer

Día de los Muertos is observed in many Latin American countries. In English, it translates to “Day of the Dead.” On this day, people remember and honor the lives of their deceased loved ones.

Richland held a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Nov. 2 in the Brazos Gallery. The event was organized by the Richland’s chapter of Achieving Latino Academic Success

popular tradition and in some cases the whole night is dedicated to taking care of graves of those who have passed on.

Altars are built in homes and public places where everybody is welcome to participate in offerings. A photo of the dead relative is present to honor his or her spirit by offering everything on the altar which also includes the decorated sugar skulls and the bread of “muerto.” A path of Cempasúchil flowers and a copal (incense) are lit and left as clues to guide the dead as they arrive back at home.

The principal items that you can find on an altar are food and beverages preferred by the dead during their lives.

Navarro said she put a picture of her father on the altar to honor and remember him. “I would like, some day when it is my turn to go, for people to honor me and remember me for many years.”

The event was considered a success. Many people who attended learned some new things about Dia de los Muertos. Some students voiced the opinion that it was good to have this kind of event on campus because it is a multicultural school and everyone can learn a little about different cultures.

(ALAS). The event introduced a little bit of Mexican culture into Richland College life.

More than 50 people filled the Brazos Gallery, including students, instructors, professors and staff from Richland. The event included a brief explanation of celebration followed by the opportunity to decorate sugar skulls.

The club has held a Dia de Los Muertos celebration on campus for the past six years.

ALAS held a Halloween fundraiser, selling pastries, candy and some skull coin purses.

They raised about $400 which will be donated to the nonprofit organization, Austen’s Autistic Adventure.

Professor Michelle Navarro said this event shows respect for Mexican culture and gives Latino students cultural support. She has international students and many of them are curious about Dia de los Muertos but they do not know what it means. For Navarro, death is not a fearful thing; it is where everyone is going, so to her, it is an honorable day to keep the dead near.

Ashley Long, a biology student, was the first one to finish her skull. She used different colors and painted a heart on her skull.

According to Long there are a lot of sad things happening in the country. “It is interesting to know that in other places [death] is a good thing,” said Long.

In Mexican culture, it is believed that the spirits of the dead come to visit and say “hello” to the people. The celebration is an occasion for sharing food, memories and fun activities with family. Spending time in cemeteries is a

Toastmasters – the art of speaking well LASHANDA MCCUIN Staff Writer

Many students in school who become successful also look for fun, exciting ways to spend time outside of class. The Richland College Community Toastmasters Club is recruiting those individuals.

The club is designed for people looking to enjoy time away from the books and focus on the pathway to success by learning to be better speakers. The club’s objective is to help

individuals with public speaking, providing leadership skills and teaching them how to take a leadership role in community affairs.

Fear of public speaking often stopspeople from pursuing their dream job. It takes confidence away from students wanting to become the next generation of leaders. The club helps students overcome this fear by providing guidance and assistance in becoming effective public speakers.

“This particular Toastmasters club has been established on campus for five months with 10 members,” said Felicha Stanley,

Toastmasters president. The club meets once a week on Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m. Each club member will also be allowed to become a member of another Toastmasters club, so if Richland is too far from home, students may join here and attend a location closer to home.

“When individuals decide to join the Toastmasters club, each person has a personal goal they are looking to achieve. We are here to guide each person to the goal they have set.

We provide the tools, skills and mentorship to obtain these goals. Also, once they have reached a certain level, they will be allowed to compete in different speaking engagements provided by different Toastmaster’s clubs. It’s such a fun and exciting experience to see how students grow throughout this process,” Stanley said.

The club does not require a minimum GPA. To join Toastmasters, all you need to do is fill out an application, pay the dues and attend the meetings.

“Since our meetings are on Thursdays at 1 p.m. we are in discussion about changing the time to fit the needs of our members and for new members who are interested but can’t make the time available. Currently, we have not set the new date and time but we are working on it,” said Stanley.

Any student is allowed to join the club.

Participants are allowed up to three meetings before being required to join. There are clubs established all around the world and they allow individuals to start new chapters.

and the city’s seventh major sports world title. Houstonians no longer have to worry about 2005 when the Astros got swept by the Chicago White Sox. It was a fight to the finish as both teams put on a major slugging performance. Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa were the dynamic duo on the infield. Justin Verlander who came to Houston from Detroit, added more firepower to its pitching rotation. Verlander’s playoff performance earned him the ALCS most valuable player. George Springer, one of the A.L.’s most powerful sluggers, won the Willie Mays World Series MVP and the baddest Chevy truck in the country. Springer clobbered five

homers throughout the World Series tying Reggie Jackson and Chase Utley.

Those guys along with the rest of the club gave Houstonians a gift they’ll never forget.

This is by far one of the greatest World Series ever. For a region that’s still recovering from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, the Astros have brought tremendous healing to the people of Houston and the Gulf Coast.

It’s been 22 years since H-Town reached the pinnacle. The Astros and the city of Houston can now rejoice as champions of baseball. This inspirational story is what we all expected...a very happy storybook ending.

The women’s soccer team loss ended their run for the national championship. The women’s team finished second in the District F regional tournament.

Building up to the match against Triton, Richland remained on top of the NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer rankings. After a 7-2 thrashing of Mountain View College, Richland has remained unmoved as the No.1ranked Div. III college soccer program in the country since the start of the 2017 season.

The opening nine minutes of the game against Triton was a tensely contested affair until the 10th minute when Richland broke the deadlock. Sophomore Irvin Dominguez started the build-up play and rounded-up the slick passing move when he pounced on a drilled cross from freshman Sergio Gonzalez to give the Thunderducks a lead to the excitement of the home crowd. Thirteen minutes later the T-Ducks doubled the lead.

James Sasay, with the tenacity and speed that characterizes his game, ran down from the opposition’s half of the field to chase down a loose ball in midfield and lay it up for Erwin Regules. Regules split a pass in between the two central defenders for Triton; Sasay raced from his own half ahead of the chaotic Triton

defense, took a touch to cushion the ball and deftly chipped it over the onrushing goalkeeper. His blistering pace and strength were too much for the Trojans of Triton to handle.

Sasay would score two more goals, taking his tally up to 23 goals in 13 games for the season.

Erwin Regules, Joshua Peloquin and Gustavo Lopez all scored to cap up an impressive game and crown Richland the District C champions.

Following the win Richland’s captain, sophmore Mateo Gutierrez expressed his happiness. “It was a hard game in beginning, but we played the best game ever this season.” Gutierrez is optimistic that Richland can retain their title. “Last season we had really good players.

This year too, we have a lot of possibilities.”

Gutierrez’s focus right now is solely on the Nationals, but once the season is finished, he intends to further his collegiate career at a Division I four-year college.

The Thunderducks now advance to the championship in Herkimer, New York. Their first game is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9 against Ocean County at 11 a.m.

ZEKE HITS ANOTHER WHAMMY Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is back in the game. His six-game suspension was lifted at press time and he is expected to play the Sunday Nov. 5 game against the Chiefs. As heard on KRLD radio, fans in the Metroplex are tired of hearing and watching Zeke’s version of Press Your Luck.

Elliott already has three whammies. One more and the Cowboys may need a lifeline of their own.

GET READY FOR SOME HOOPS College basketball is underway and the Richland men’s team is looking to avenge last season’s upset by North Lake. Their road for a national championship began in North Dallas against Paul Quinn. Richland head coach Jon Havens is excited about having the season opener here at home.

Haven said, “Our league is one of the toughest in the nation. You can be in last place one year and win the whole thing the next year. We got to be ready to play every single night and can’t take anybody lightly.” Richland played its first home game against Paul Quinn College from South Dallas on Nov. 2 winning 81-47.

SPACE CITY OF CHAMPIONS We are proud that the great state of Texas finally has a World Series championship: The Houston Astros, a major league baseball team that spent its first 50 years in the National League then made the switch to the American League in 2013. Four years later, the Astros made history defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the seventh game by the score of 5-1.
