OBITUARIES

Marcia M. Felton Jesse E. Shields

Marcia M Felton, age 80, passed awa y peacefully on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Pine Valley Community Village. She was born on December 13, 1942, in Richland County, the daughter of Lawrence and Hazel (Dray) Sneath. Marcia met Earl in the milk house of their family farm. It was love at first sight and they were united in marriage September 16, 1961. Together they raised three girls, Kelly, Jodi & Dana. Marcia enjoyed camping with her husband Earl, brother Larry Sneath & LuAnn, niece Deb & Mitch Hardy, and nephew Chad & Amber Morris. Marcia and Earl made many trips to Branson, Missouri. For their 50th anniversary they took a once in a lifetime cruise to Alaska. Marcia made the best fudge in the world. Her homemade noodles and apple pies were delicious too. She loved the outdoors and spent many hours tending to her flowers and working on the lawn. Marcia is survived by her husband of 61 years, Earl L. Felton; 3 daughters, Kelly Borton of Waukesha, WI, Jodi (Matt) Eshelman of Stephen City, VA, Dana Bladl (Ryan Andretti) of Lone Rock, WI; 5 grandchildren, Benjamin (Angela) Borton of Hugo, MN, Zachary Borton of Milwaukee, WI, Reese Borton of Waukesha, WI, McKenna Eshelman of Stephen City, VA, Grace Bladl of Richland Center, WI; one great grandson, Breck Borton of Hugo, MN; and a sister, Myrtle Morris of Richland Center, WI. Jesse E. Shields, 39, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 24, 2023 at home in Richland Center. He was born on August 26, 1983, the son of Thomas and Deborah (Brenner) Shields. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 2002. He attended UW-Richland and went on to graduate from UW-Madison. Growing up Jesse was dearly loved by his family. He was a fun-loving adventurer, enjoying the outdoors, always hunting deer, turkeys, morel mushrooms and ginseng. He was an avid player of baseball and basketball, which he loved, and had many friends. Later in life, Jesse traveled with friends to canoe the Boundary Waters, hike the Appalachian Trail and Smokey Mountains, the Bighorns in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains. Jesse worked residential and commercial construction, had his own business, as well as working with his Father on many building and remodeling projects. He most recently was employed at Meister Cheese. Jesse’s life can be summed up as one of caring and giving to many. He had a heart of gold. Whenever someone was in need, he would give and help wherever he could. Many times, he shared his home and resources with people in need. Isaiah 58 says, “Is this not the kind of fasting I have chosen… to loose the chains of injustice and united the cords of the yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the homeless poor with shelter? When you see the naked, to clothe them, and not turn away? Then your light will break forth like the dawn.” And now it has for Jesse.

Survivors include his parents Tom (Debbie) Shields; brother, Micah (Kari) Shields of Sugar Grove, IL; 2 nephews, Graham and Charlie Shields of Sugar Grove, IL; aunts and uncles, Ed (Fran) Shields of Green Valley, AZ, Harry (MaryBeth) Shields of Nashville, TN, Frank (Kathy) Shields of Crystal Lake, IL, Denny (Meg) Shields of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Mark (Julie) Brenner of Eagle River, WI, Dorothy (David) Bell of Belvidere, IL, Dawn (Burliss) Parker of Freeport, IL; sister-in-law, Lynda Brenner; many cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Hannah; aunts and uncles, Diana Brenner, Darcey Blazier, Bill Brenner, Rich Shields, Mary Kay Shields; cousin Brandon Shields. A celebration of Jesse’s life will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Noon at Clary Memorial Funeral Home in Richland Center with Rev. Burliss Parker officiating. Friends may call on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 10:00 AM to Noon at the Clary Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be held in the Richland Center Cemetery at a later date.

She loved playing cards and raising two beautiful children Amber and John. In retirement Kenda enjoyed crafting, card making, watching her soaps, and seeing her grandsons grow. Kenda fought a long battle against cancer with a sense of humor and determination. She never complained and was always upbeat. FOCUSONFARMING 2023

A farming supplement to the

Advancements in livestock technology

Consumer demand drives changes in industry, and the agricultural sector is no exception. Consumer demands for improved animal welfare have led to changes in the livestock sector, and various technologies have been developed and are in development to help this particular segment of the agricultural industry thrive.

According to the Animal AgTech Innovation Summit, various startups have developed technologies that can make the livestock industry more sustainable and efficient.

Treatment

The Israeli firm Armenta has developed a non-antibiotic treatment for bovine mastitis that utilizes acoustic pulse technology. The treatment has a 70 percent cure rate.

Another firm working to treat livestock is the United States-based General Probiotics. Animal AgTech reports that General Probiotics develops cellbots and antimicrobial probiotics that eliminate harmful pathogens in livestock. That can reduce dependency on antibiotics and make food production safer.

Welfare

Faromatics, a firm based in Spain, has combined robotics, artificial intelligence and big data to improve animal welfare and farm productivity. One Faromatics

product utilizes a robot suspended from a ceiling to monitor certain variables, including equipment function and health and welfare, that affect broiler chickens.

The American firm Swinetech utilizes voice recognition and computer vision technology in its SmartGuard product to prevent piglet deaths from crushing and starvation. The product also makes it possible to track and facilitate obstetrical assistance.

Operations

Based in Uganda, Jaguza Tech has developed a livestock management system that utilizes sensors, data science and machine learning to improve the efficiency, productivity and sustainability of modern farm operations. Farmers can utilize Jaguza to perform a host of functions, including monitoring their animals' health and identifying their livestock.

The Netherlands-based H2Oalert is a water control management system that checks the quality and quantity of cattle drinking water in real time. The management system also checks for pollution and malfunctions in the water supply.

Livestock technology continues to advance, and firms across the globe are developing new products and platforms to help livestock farmers make their operations more efficient, sustainable and productive.

A Wise Investment for Your Farm

Baldwin highlights what’s coming to Wisconsin

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin says Wisconsin can look forward to dollars coming its way for ag research, dairy innovation, farmer wellness and farmland security. The money comes from the FY2023 Omnibus Legislation. She touches on four components:

1) $6 million for expansion of the facilities at the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station in Marathon County and $10 million for the UW Dairy Forage Center in Prairie du Sac

2) Dairy Business Innovation Initiative will continue to be funded at $25 million. $1 million for the FDA to implement an updated approach to Standards of Identity enforcement against dairy imitation products. $10 million to the UW Dairy Forage Center

3) Farmland Security Act – addressing impacts that foreign investments have on farms and rural communities

4) $10 million for the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network, which connects farmers and agricultural producers with stress assistance programs

As Chair of the Senate Appropriations

Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, Baldwin worked to pass the Agriculture Appropriations bill, which was included in the bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Legislation for Fiscal Year 2023.

“In recent years, our agricultural and rural communities have faced unique challenges, including supply chain disruptions, high input costs, and severe weather events. I am proud to have helped craft legislation that increases investments in our agriculture economy, supports our family farms, safeguards national security in the heartland, and increases rural development for a brighter, more sustainable future,” she says. “With investments in clean water infrastructure, rural broadband, and affordable housing, our legislation delivers results for rural communities across the country and in Wisconsin.”

DATCP pushes animal health at Federal level

At the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture 2023 Winter Policy Conference, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Secretary Randy Romanski proposed two action items related to animal health, which passed the organization with unanimous support.

The first action item encourages USDA to publish rates or guidance explaining which disease response costs the federal government will cover in order to reduce confusion for producers and aid states in developing emergency plans. These changes will enable states to confidently move forward with contracting and purchasing to facilitate a rapid response.

The second action item encourages USDA to develop incentives to help producers de-

velop depopulation and disposal plans to prepare for animal disease emergencies. This will allow impacted farms to complete depopulation and disposal more efficiently when needed and allow them to return to production quicker.

I participated with my colleagues in robust discussions about the challenges we are facing responding to animal diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, says Romanski. With the passage of these action items, NASDA will now work with federal government officials and industry stakeholders to move them forward.

While in Washington D.C. the regional Midwestern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (MASDA) group met, and Secretary Romanski was elected Treasurer of the organization. The Food Export Association of the Midwest USA also met at the Winter Policy Conference. Romanski was also selected to serve as the next Sec-

retary/Treasurer of Food Export-Midwest. As Secretary/Treasurer, I will serve on the Executive Committee and look forward to increasing my involvement in the details of the Food Export-Midwest board to increase our regions agricultural exports around the world, he says. I look forward to this new position and identifying opportunities for Wisconsin to advance its agricultural exports.

The 2023 Farm Bill is a priority for NASDA. NASDA has identified 10 policy areas including agriculture research, animal disease, conservation and climate resiliency, cyber security, food safety, hemp, invasive species, local food systems, special crops, and trade promotion.

The theme of this years Winter Policy Conference was United We Thrive, and it is clear that our messages are amplified when we work together on federal policy

issues, explains Romanski. I will continue to work with my colleagues to advocate for Wisconsin agriculture.

A student from the UW-Madison Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences organization, Confidence John, participated in the Winter Policy Conference through the Agriculture Policy Summit. The Agriculture Policy Summit teaches undergraduate and graduate students about federal agriculture policy through hands-on experiences.

I am proud Confidence was selected to be part of the Agriculture Policy Summit, and he was a wonderful representative for Wisconsin throughout the conference, says Romanski. As a native of Nigeria and a Masters student studying agroecology, Confidence brings a valuable perspective to the agricultural policy discussions.

Wisconsin snap bean production leads nation

The Midwest Food Products Association (MWFPA) today touted United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) figures showing the Badger State maintained its Number One ranking nationally in production of processing snap beans during 2022. The rankings may be viewed at nass. usda.gov.

The production of snap beans for processing in Wisconsin totaled 305,996 tons and was valued at $49.6 million for the year – keeping the state first nationally in production ahead of New York, Michigan, Florida, and Oregon. Growers in Wisconsin were presented with near-ideal con-

ditions throughout much of last year’s growing season.

“Food processing is strongly tied to agriculture. Wisconsin perennially places among the top five states in growing and processing crops such as potatoes, sweet corn, peas, snap beans, carrots, cucumbers and cabbage for sauerkraut,” according to Jason Culotta, president of MWFPA.

Snap beans are typically harvested while still in their pods. They are rich in vitamins, containing vitamins A, C, and K, and are a great source of micronutrients such as iron and potassium while also containing trace amounts of protein.

Wisconsin also maintained its third-place ranking for processing sweet corn in 2022, producing 483,336 tons at a value of $52.7 million. The production of sweet corn for processing is heavily concentrated in the Midwest, with Minnesota ranking first in the nation ahead of Washington.

Wisconsin is a major food processor hosting companies with national and international name recognition. Its vegetable industry is a major contributor to the state’s economy.

How rising food demand is affecting farming

The population is growing and so is its demand for food to fuel those extra bodies. Harvard Business Review reports the global population has quadrupled over the last century. It's predicted that, by 2050, the population will exceed nine billion people. The world is not able to feed all of its inhabitants, according to Penn State. There are more than one billion people who are estimated to lack sufficient food, and two billion who do not receive adequate nutrition. Researchers from the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota concluded that, to feed the world by 2030, yields on maize, rice, wheat, and soybeans will have to rise by 60 to 110 percent. At the start of 2023, projections show them only increasing by 45 to 60 percent. There

are a few reasons why food supply may not meet up with demand.

■ Climate change: Climate change is predicted to cause issues to crop yields, especially in portions of the world where the population is growing the fastest. For example, a recent NASA study published in the journal Nature predicts that high greenhouse gas emissions may cause corn output to decline as early as 2030, but wheat output would increase. Farmers may need to roll with the punches and shift operations to cope with the environmental changes.

■ Decreased commercial farming interest: Fewer people are working in farming. Land prices for expansion, new

government mandates and regulations, and the impact of immigration and trade policies have made farming less attractive than it once was. Fewer commercial operations result in a diminished food commodity output.

■ Consumer waste: Food loss and waste (FLW) is a widespread issue, posing a challenge to food security. The World Bank estimates 30 percent of all food across the globe is wasted, amounting to 1.3 billion tons of food per year. The average global household wastes 74 kg of food each year, according to the United Nations Environment Programme's 2021 Food Waste Index. Food waste is an issue that needs a solution as the world looks for ways to feed an expanding popula-

tion in the decades to come.

In order to improve output, farmers have to make some changes. These can include investment in tools and technologies that enable farmers to apply nutrients more precisely and at lower cost, advises the Environmental Defense Fund. Seeds that need less water and fewer nutrients, as well as new fertilizers that are less likely to be lost to air and water, are some additional ideas.

Farmers also may want to employ green practices, such as hydroponics and drip irrigation, if they haven't already, to improve efficiency and cut costs. The public also may need to petition their lawmakers to make it easier for farm workers arriving on working visas to man the fields.

What consumers can do to support farmers

Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.

All that hard work ensures individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant, readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and thankfully there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.

· Buy fresh foods at your local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies' favorite places, but they aren't exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone

needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don't typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.

■ Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms and determine if it's possible to buy directly

LIME RIDGE AG-SUPPLY

from them. Farms may offer delivery or pick-up, and consumers can enjoy fresh foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.

■ Check labels before buying in local grocery stores. Packaging labels will indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. This may include fruits, vegetables, meat, pork, or even desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms, and consumers will feel better knowing they helped to support local farmers.

■ Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it's buying food from farms or taking advantage of family days that let kids enjoy a day on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word-of-mouth can be a great way to inspire your neighbors to support local farmers as well.

Consumers can do much to support hardworking local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers also might feel good when they sit down and enjoy a meal featuring locally grown, fresh foods.

No change in Wisconsin farm numbers

The total number of farms in Wisconsin in 2022 was 64,100, unchanged from 2021 according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service latest farm report.

Total land in farms for Wisconsin during 2022 was 14.2 million acres. Wisconsin’s average farm size in 2022 was 222 acres, unchanged from 2021.

At the 2023 Agricultural Outlook Forum, Renk Agribusiness Institute Director Paul Mitchell says Wisconsin’s top four commodities did very well in 2022. These are corn, soybeans, livestock and dairy, which saw good prices and record or near-record yields. He adds farm bankruptcies are also down.

“It’s really nice to see the farm bankruptcies, Chapter 12 filings, are down. We actually no longer lead the nation,” Mitchell says. “There’s a lot of evidence that people have taken this opportunity to reorganize and get ready for

whatever is coming into the rest of 2023.”

Taking a look at the total U.S., the number of farms in 2022 was estimated at just over 2 million, down 9,350 farms from 2021. The number of farms increased in all sales classes except the $1,000-$9,999 and $10,000$99,999 sales classes.

In 2022, 50.8 percent of all farms had less than $10,000

WFB applications are available

in sales and 81.4 percent of all farms had less than $100,000 in sales. In 2022, 7.5 percent of all farms had sales of $500,000 or more.

Total land in farms, at 893.4 million acres, decreased 1.9 million acres from 2021. The biggest change for 2022 is that producers in Sales Class $100,000 – $249,999 operated 1.62 million fewer acres than in 2021. In 2022, 30 percent of all farmland was operated by farms with less than $100,000 in sales, while about 41 percent of all farmland was operated by farms with sales of $500,000 or more.

The average farm size for 2022 is 446 acres, up from 445 acres the previous year. Average farm size increased in the $1 million or more sales class and decreased or remained unchanged in all other sales classes.

All Far mers Need Water for Good Production

Green leaf digester a win for 11 dairies

A new digester facility in eastern Wisconsin is collecting 900,000 gallons of manure per day, and converting half of that as clean water and the other half as valuable fertilizer products and bedding. The gases from the manure are used as fuel for vehicles out West.

Bobby Levine is the CEO and founder of Digested Organics, which claims one of the largest manure digester facilities in the world in Green Leaf, Wisconsin. It’s a partnership with Dynamic Renewables. Levine tells Mid-West Farm Report that the facility is fostering better relationships between farmers and their community, as well as adding value to the 11 participating farms.

The two largest farms in the project are piping the manure to the digester, eliminating 24,000 trucks off the road each year, Levine explains. The concentrated nutrients and drinking-quality water can also go back to the farms via the pipeline. The project has a discharge permit to put that clean water back into rivers to help the environment.

The manure goes through several steps to create these end products: manure goes into digesters where biogas is collected, cleaned and injected into a pipeline to be used as transportation fuel in California

the manure that comes out of the digester goes into a screw press, and solids are dried into fiber for bedding

the liquid is further cleaned: ultrafiltration, super filtration, reverse osmosis, biofilter and ultraviolet disinfection before being released as drinkable water into the environment

the nutrients taken out of that water are made into two concentrated products: a thick slurry of phosphorus and nitrogen, and a concentration of ammonia and potassium

The two fertilizer products are about three to four times more concentrated than raw manure, Levine says. Farmers can combine the two and treat it like manure, applying fewer gallons per acres. Or producers can keep them separate and make custom blends depending on the crop.

“Today, dairy farmers who do these digester products get value in lots of different models,” Levine says. Sometimes they get a check per cow or a percentage of biogas sales. In this project, they’re getting volume reduction.

“Again that’s lower trucking costs, better uptake of nutrients, having a lot more flexibility for storage, dealing with those tighter application windows that farmers have to deal with right now for manure,” Levine says. “That was more important to them than some fractional check of some gas sales. Keeping these farms healthy and sustainable in this community required that kind of volume reduction.”

The basics of regenerative agriculture

Climate change poses a threat to various industries, not the least of which is the agricultural sector. Agricultural industry insiders recognize that the changing climate has been forcing farmers and agricultural organizations to adapt and adjust for decades, and that need to be flexible won't change in the years to come.

One of the changes many farmers may consider in coming years, if they haven't already, is a pivot to regenerative agriculture practices. Regenerative agriculture could have a profound impact on the world over the next half century, so now may be a great time to gain an understanding of the practice.

What is regenerative agriculture?

Regenerative agriculture is a production system that focuses on reducing water usage and other inputs as part of a larger attempt to prevent land degradation and deforestation. According to the organization Green America®, regenerative agriculture is designed to harness the power of photosynthesis in plants to sequester carbon in the soil. The ability to do that can improve soil health, crop yields, water resilience, and nutrient density.

Why should people be interested in regenerative agriculture?

GreenAmerica® notes that regenerative agriculture draws down atmospheric carbon dioxide. That's a significant benefit, as Climate.gov, which is a product of various departments within the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, reports that adding more carbon dioxide to the environment is causing global temperatures to rise. In fact, observations from the NOAA Global Monitoring Lab in 2021 revealed that carbon dioxide alone was responsible for about two-thirds of the total heating influence of all human-produced greenhouse gases. GreenAmerica® reports that, at scale, regenerative agriculture could help to reverse the climate crisis by drawing down atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Another reason to consider regenerative agriculture is its connection

to topsoil. GreenAmerica® reports that the world is on the cusp of running out of topsoil, which is vital to growing food. Regenerative agriculture rebuilds topsoil, which can lead to greater food security across the globe.

What are some regenerative agriculture practices?

Regenerative agriculture practices include the usage of cover crops, a reduction in tilling, crop rotation, and spreading compost. GreenAmerica® notes that regenerative agriculture practitioners also avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and factory farming.

As the climate crisis continues to challenge the agricultural sector, regenerative agriculture could help farmers and the larger industry successfully confront those issues.

Beef and pork wholesale prices continue to work higher

The Choice beef carcass cutout finished last week at $281.04, gaining over $7.75 on the week and is now above levels from a year ago. Wholesale prices continue to move higher this week. Fed cattle show lists are shorter in most of the country’s cattle feeding areas. Harvest volumes have been decreasing since the beginning of the year with last week’s estimate of 627,000 head being 3,000 head below the previous week and 43,000 below the same week last year. The USDA will release a Cattle of Feed report and it will give a clearer picture of fed cattle supplies. The average trade estimate is for on feed inventories to be nearly 4% lower than a year ago. Winter weather in many parts of the nation added challenges to cattle move-

ment this week. The average beef retail price for beef in January was $7.57/pound, 1.6% higher than December. Looking back further, the retail price is 29% higher than pre-COVID-19 levels of January 2019. A case of BSE was confirmed in Brazil this week. Brazilian protocols call for a voluntary suspension of beef exports to China in the event of a confirmed case. Brazil is the largest exporter of beef to China.

Lean hog futures contracts were sharply higher on Tuesday of this week but lost the upward momentum on Wednesday and were mixed Thursday. There is discussion that futures prices are putting in lows, but that thought isn’t unanimous among traders. Cash hogs were $3 higher last week with the pork carcass cutout value up $1.75 last week to finish Friday at $82.09. Much like beef, pork wholesale prices continued to work higher this week. Last week’s estimated harvest of 2.505 million was 19,000 more hogs than the previous week and 23,000 more than the same week last year. While carcass weights have been lighter than last year, pork production in 2023 is still nearly 2% higher year-to-date due to higher weekly harvest totals. Pork’s retail average price in January was $4.79, down 9 cents from December. Identical to beef, that is 29% higher than January 2019.

The gross lamb carcass cutout value ended last week at $532.87 making it 71 cents lower on the week. Fed cattle prices at Wisconsin and surrounding state auction markets were steady to higher again this week. High-yielding, high-grading cattle brought $135 to $160/ cwt. Groups of high Choice and Prime lots sold from $160 to $169/cwt. The Holstein steer market was mostly steady to higher this week ranging from $115 to $143/cwt with a few packages selling to $148. Silage fed, under finished or heavy dairy breed steers brought $78 to $114/cwt. Dairy x Beef steers were bringing $107 to $150/cwt with a few to $155. Cows were $2 higher. A bulk of the cows brought $64 to $84/cwt with some selling into the high $90s. Doubtful health and thin cows were bringing $64/cwt and down. Dairy breed bull calves were steady, bringing $50 to $150/cwt with heavier, well cared for calves selling up to $200/cwt. Beef and Beef Cross calves were selling to $360/ cwt. Shorn market lambs were bringing $135 to $150/cwt, with unshorn lambs bringing $130 to $145/cwt. Some lighter lambs sold to $175/cwt.

Green farming is growing

Farmers have been pressured to increase production to meet the demand of a growing population. This may require employing more efficient measures to ensure maximum output. Unfortunately, efficiency doesn't always mesh with sustainability, so commercial operations have had to make some modifications to find a balance between serving the public and protecting the planet. Green farming utilizes different technology and practices in order to decrease detrimental impact on the environment. According to the farming resource NuFarming, agricultural operations have a significant impact on climate change. Simply adopting some new practices can lessen that impact.

Growing plants are not the only thing on a farm that can benefit from the sun. Farmers can convert a portion or all of their power needs to solar. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are benefits when solar companies and farmers work together. Solar developers reduce installation costs and upfront risk by placing solar modules on previously tilled agricultural land. Vegetation under modules also can contribute to lower soil temperatures and increased solar performance. Agricultural land managers can reduce energy costs and diversify their revenue streams with solar. Plus, they can market products to sustainability-minded customers. Solar is not the only renewable energy option. Farmers can incorporate wind and hydroelectric power as well.

Crop rotation

This farming technique has been used for thousands of years and involves growing different crops in different seasons over a period of time. Farmers reduce the chances for pests and diseases becoming problems in the soil because frequent crop changes prevent invaders from gaining a foothold. Farmers use fewer fertilizers and pesticides as a result.

Hydroponic and aquaponic strategies

Farmers can improve productivity while also reducing environmental impact with these two growing methods. NuEnergy states that hydroponic systems grow plants in mineral solutions or in materials like perlite or gravel. Aquaponics involves raising aquatic animals in addition to growing crops. The waste from the fish and other marine life is used to offer nutrients to the plants by growing them in this nutrient-rich water. Both methods remove the need for soil.

Drip irrigation

Drip irrigation methods deliver water to the roots of plants through a series of pipes or tubes. Because water is not being sprayed into the air through sprinklers and other methods, less is lost to evaporation, and less water overall may be needed to provide for crops.

Plasticulture

Plastic seems like it may not have a purpose on the farm, but recycled plastic, which is used in plastic mulch, can help produce plentiful crops with less water. Plastic mulches raise soil temperatures and insulate against evaporation so plants can grow faster and mature sooner. Invasive weeds also may be less likely to take root in plastic mulch or when crops are grown on black plastic.

Natural pesticides

Farmers can introduce plants that pests tend not to like to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. For example, interspersing crops with natural bug repellants, such as basil, lavender and lemongrass, may keep insects at bay. Alliums, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and other flowers planted nearby also may deter bugs.

Getting to the root of sodic soil

Plants often are only as strong as the soil in which they grow. While certain greenery may thrive no matter where it's planted, soil conditions are often key to successful growing.

Sodic soil is one condition people may experience at home or in commercial farming operations. Sodic soils, sometimes called saline-alkali soils or dispersive soils, are defined as having high levels of exchangeable sodium and low levels of total salts, according to the Colorado State University Extension. These conditions compromise growing conditions because sodic soils tend to be poorly drained and crust over. Water intake also can be poor in sodic soils, and pH is usually high - coming in above 9.0.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development of the Government of Western Australia advises a simple sodic soil test to check for sodicity. One can collect dry soil aggregates (crumbs of soil) from different depths. Those crumbs should be placed into a clear jar of distilled water, taking care not to mix or agitate the soil. The water around the edges of sodic soil will become cloudy and appear milky. For highly dispersive

soil, the dispersion will be evident after about 10 to 30 minutes. Moderately sodic soil may take 2 hours.

Individuals can take steps to improve sodic soil. Gypsum is the most commonly used amendment for sodic soil, according to Science Direct. It also can reduce the harmful effects of high-sodium irrigation waters. Gypsum is a mineral that is composed of hydrated calcium sulfate. Gypsum has an effect on reducing the rate of soil erosion. It is more effective when gypsum is spread on the soil surface rather than mixed in. Limestone, which also contains calcium, is another additive that can amend sodic soils. Gardeners may want to add calcium to the soil because it replaces the sodium and then the sodium can be leached out.

Additional mitigation methods for sodic soils include changing plant species or varieties to more tolerant ones that will grow more readily.

Commercial farmers or home gardeners may encounter sodic soil. Though sodic soil is not ideal, it can be remedied in various ways. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

The various approaches to farm waste management

Waste is a byproduct of every industry, even those that produce food. Crops and animals may feed the masses, but there are items on the farm that require disposal or recycling. Farm waste management is a practice that endeavors to remove waste in ways that are affordable, sustainable and effective.

Substantial waste is produced in agricultural operations. This can include manure, animal bedding, leaves, clippings, and even scraps from the kitchen. According to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, without proper mitigation methods, farm waste can be detrimental to the environment simply due to its volume. Farm waste may be natural, chemical-, animal-, medical-, and/or plant-based. If it is not managed, the waste can pollute water and air, and also disrupt the process of farming. That can make it beneficial to take a deep look at some of the ways to manage farm waste.

Composting

Kitchen waste or crop wastage can be turned into fertilizer and bioenergy through composting. Composting uses natural bacteria and other microorganisms to naturally break down refuse into a safer, more usable form. Compost can be spread

over fields and used to feed plants without the need to supplement much with chemical fertilizers.

Food recycling

Feeding livestock animals directly with kitchen leftovers is one way to cut down on waste. Pigs do well with this, as they are omnivorous animals who tend to eat anything. The United States Environmental Protection Agency urges anyone who wants to participate in recycling food waste for animal feed to contact a local solid waste public health agency or county agricultural extension agency for more information. This way the food waste can be easily handled and safely controlled.

Manure management

Cow and horse manure can be add-

ed to traditional compost piles, but swine and other omnivores' waste may contain bacteria not suited to such composting. According to the resource ManureToFertilizer.com, pig manure stored in a cesspool needs to be pumped into a solid liquid separator to remove extra water. Solids can be mixed with straw or sawdust to adjust the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and spread out in rows to dry. Farmers also can look to products like MICROBE-LIFT®, which breaks down waste and reduces toxic gases to enhance manure management.

Other recycling

Waste from farms can be turned into other products. For example, corn cobs, bagasse, rice straw, and husks can be turned into silica, a nonmetallic element that is great for the skin, hair, nails, and bones. Fats from animals can be made into soaps, as can cocoa pods.

Non-organic material, such as chemical waste, will need to be managed according to local regulations. Broken equipment can be taken to recycling facilities to ensure it does not end up in landfills.

Farm waste management is just another cog in the agricultural production machine.

Mapping the future of agriculture

The demand for food is directly related to population growth. By 2050, food needs are expected to double, according to a study published in the journal Agricultural Economics. That puts increasing pressure on the agricultural sector to meet growing demand. However, many experts think the industry will fall short. In addition to increased food demand, consumer habits, technology, and policies continue to force the agricultural industry to evolve. Indeed, the agricultural sector may look very different in the future.

Bigger digital footprint

Social media has transformed many industries, and it can do the same for agriculture. Farming supply chains can communicate with one another by getting feedback from customers in real time through social media. However, agricultural operations will have to devote teams to manage social media presence, especially since misinformation is so widespread on social media.

Apart from social media, local farmers may increase their efforts to utilize mobile apps and direct-to-consumer purchasing options. The global pandemic helped businesses reimagine takeout and curbside shopping. Local farms may want to market to the home-shopping community, providing ways to deliver produce, fresh meat and poultry and other items direct to customers' homes.

Disaster assistance resources for farmers

Regenerative agriculture

The future may feature a significant shift in the way farms source their ingredients. Regeneration International says that regenerative agriculture can be the future. This describes farming and grazing practices that may help reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity. Some insist that farmers who utilize regenerative agriculture produce food that is more sustainable and healthy. This is something eco- and health-conscious consumers can stand behind.

Technological advancement

There's a good chance that technology will continue to play important and growing roles in farming operations. New agricultural technologies can collect data on soil and plant health and produce results in real time. Precision farming technology can be developed to deliver integrated solutions no matter the size of the operation.

Shift in what's grown

Farmers may give more thought to sustainable products. Crops like hemp and cannabis are being utilized in new and innovative ways, and they're only the start as consumers have expanded their views on plant-based foods and products.

Natural disasters are often devastating, resulting in losses of life, livelihood and homes, among other effects. If it seems as though weather-related disasters have risen in frequency in recent decades, that's because they have. In fact, a 2021 report from the World Metereological Organization indicated that the number of disasters has increased by a factor of five over the last half-century.

Weather-related disasters do not discriminate, and people from all walks of life and corners of the globe can be affected by such catastrophes. The agricultural sector is especially vulnerable to natural disasters, as farmers can lose their homes and their livelihoods in what feels like the blink of an eye. But farmers should know that various support programs are in place to provide assistance should they need it in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Programs in the United States

■ Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP): The Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that this program provides compensation to eligible livestock producers who have suffered grazing losses due to drought or fire on land that is native or improved pastureland with permanent vegetative cover. Assistance also is available when land planted specifically for grazing has been affected by drought or fire.

■ Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP): This provides benefits to livestock producers for livestock deaths in excess of normal mortality caused by adverse weather or by attacks by animals reintroduced into the wild by the federal government.

■ Emergency Loan Program: This program provides loans to producers as they seek to recover from production and physical losses due to drought, flooding and other natural disasters. Loans also may be available after losses due to quarantine or by animal quarantine laws imposed in accordance with the Plant Protection Act.

■ Emergency Conservation Program (ECP): This program helps farmers and ranchers repair damage to farmlands caused by natural disasters. The program also helps put in place water conservation methods during severe drought.

■ Noninsured Disaster Assistance Program (NAP): This program pays covered producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to natural disasters.

More information about cited programs in the U.S. can be found at fsa.usda.gov. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

FFA essay contest underway

Advocating for the importance of agriculture and agricultural education has long been a commitment for Culver’s – especially during National FFA Week. This year, in its ninth annual FFA Essay Contest, the national restaurant chain is partnering with U.S. Farmers & Ranchers in Action and the Decade of Ag movement for the first time to energize students around the creation of a sustainable and resilient agricultural future.

Culver’s longstanding relationship with FFA is part of its Thank You Farmers Project, an initiative that aims to advocate for the positive impact of agriculture while investing in agricultural education in order to create a more resilient and sustainable world. Culver’s has donated over $4 million to agricultural causes through the Thank You Farmers Project since the program’s founding in 2013.

“There’s never been a more important time to have passionate and energized young leaders in agriculture, and FFA is at the forefront of making that a reality,” says Alison Demmer, Culver’s marketing and public relations manager and former Wisconsin FFA president. “Partnering with USFRA and their Decade of Ag movement this year is the perfect opportunity to get students excited to share their ideas for a climate-smart, sustainable future of agriculture.”

Three FFA members will be selected as winners, earning prizes of $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 for their FFA chapters to pursue additional educational projects and learning initiatives.

This year’s contest focuses on the Decade of Ag movement, which is facilitated by USFRA and brings together more than 160 organizations and leaders from the food and agriculture industries to work toward a climate-smart, sustainable future.

This year’s essay prompt is:

As a member of FFA and a future agricultural leader, what excites you about a movement like the Decade of Ag?

Written essays (1,000 words or less) and videos (five minutes or less) will be accepted at culvers.com/essaycontest until the deadline of May 1 at 9 a.m. CT. Students must be active members of their FFA chapter for the 2023-24 school year to be eligible.

There will be plenty of horsin’ around at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2023 in Baraboo, July 18-20. Equine enthusiasts can prepare for an entertainment-packed schedule in the Fleet Farm Arena. Wayne Williams, host of “Speaking of Horses” TV and Radio with over 40 years of announcing under his belt, will be manning the microphone in the Fleet Farm Arena.

“This year we are featuring some awe-inspiring stunt riders sure to excite the crowd,” said Anna Maenner, Exhibit and Program Coordinator for Farm Technology Days. “Attendees will be able to see many different equestrian acts in a span of just a few hours – each act is featured multiple times daily.”

Equestrian acts scheduled for FTD 2023 include:

■ Meyer Farms Belgians 10 Horse Pyramid: The Meyer Family has performed the pyramid at numerous events over the past 20 years including many past Farm Tech Days, rodeos, and fairs. The unique hitch has 10 horses in a “bowling pin” configuration – one leader, then a team with three behind them and four on the wheel. Originally driven by Randy Meyer, now his son Kris Meyer handles the lines assisted by his own son. They will be hooking the pyramid twice daily at this year’s Farm Tech Days!

■ The Rodeo City Drill Team: The Rodeo City Riders Equestrian Drill Team began in 1999 when six riders carried flags into the arena and performed a simple routine at the Manawa Mid-Western Rodeo. The team rides to a choreographed routine featuring the American Flag and patriotic music. The riders and their horses need to be responsive from speedy, per-

forming dangerous moves to standing still for split seconds; flags add to the level of difficulty because the riders can only use one hand. The team travels throughout Wisconsin and UP Michigan performing in rodeos, clinics, and other equestrian events.

■ The Pegasus Riders: The Pegasus Riders are two 12-year-old equestrian performers that specialize in trick riding, roman riding, dance, aerial hammock, and equestrian liberty. These multi-talented kids have performed alongside the nation’s leading equestrian performers and offer polished, fast-paced, dynamic acts that have stunned audiences around the world. These girls are award-winning! At FTD they will be performing liberty, roman riding and trick riding as well as conducting their Performing Horses 101 Clinic. In addition, they will have a meet-and-greet station at their barn. The equestrian program for this year’s show has been coordinated by Susie Weiss, owner of Domino Stables, Inc. in Baraboo, WI.

“We’ve put together an exciting program that everyone – experienced horsemen and women and never-ever riders will really enjoy,” said Weiss.

“We’re looking forward to sharing the great horses, their riders and the programs with everyone who comes to Baraboo for the show!”

More than 250 companies have signed up to exhibit at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days 2023, which is ahead of pace. The show expects over 500 exhibitors will be onsite in Baraboo in July. To learn more about how to be featured visit wifarmtechdays.org/exhibitors1.
