Genesis gets grant for $800K Affordable housing funds will go toward facility renovations EMILIE HEIDEMANN Unified Newspaper Group
A federal grant will help Genesis Housing fix three l ow - i n c o m e a p a r t m e n t buildings in downtown Oregon, the Oregon nonprofit has announced. The $824,945 award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago is through its Affordable Housing Program. It was contingent on a match from the Village of Oregon, which committed the money from its 2 year
old affordable housing fund earlier this year. Genesis president Scott Meier told the Observer on Nov. 22 many of the buildings’ amenities and equipment are original, having been constructed around 40-50 years ago. The buildings serve seniors and those with disabilities. A Genesis release states that facilities have been maintained as much as possible with limited rental income but need significant updates to remain functional and meet residents’ needs. Bill’s Food Store namesake Faust dies at 89 The Oregon area lost a long-time community pillar and business leader last week with the death of Bill’s Food Center general manager Leonard “Bill” Faust on Nov. 21. He was 89. Faust Born Oct. 30, 1930, Faust first got his start in the grocery business as a teenager bagging groceries growing up in Madison. He rose through the ranks, and by 1967 was running a store in Madison before heading to Oregon in 1978 after he bought out Paul Coleman, owner of Oregon’s downtown grocery store. That year, Faust

Aside from running a successful business for more than four decades, Faust was also well-known in the area for his charitable work, with the store a constant partner for a variety of fundraisers. When Rome Corners Intermediate sixth grader Beau Jacobs was barely 5 years old, he performed in a play for the first time with the Oregon Straw Hat Players. It was then he discovered his young passion for theatre while finding a family
in the group. Six years later, Jacobs, 11, is a paid actor starring in the Fireside Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Story,” as the lead Ralphie. He’s signed with Madison’s The Rock Agency, and will be part of a documentary tackling stereotypes around boys pursuing dance. Jacobs also has an upcoming audition for KIDZ BOP, a brand of compilation albums featuring kids singing G-rated versions of contemporary songs.
