The family of Dorothea A Blindert wish to thank our family and friends who supported us with sympathy, food, and flowers during this difficult time. Our sincere thank you to ST. Croix Hospice, De Anna Conley, and staff for the kindness and care during Dorothea’s illness and passing. A special Thank you To father Dick and father William as well as the parish volunteers who served lunch, and to and Martin Schwartz Funeral Home and Crematory.
There are no “sheep” nations today in the Day of Grace. You might say that God sees them all as “goats” until the catching away of the Church (the Body of Christ). “For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all” (Romans 11:32) Even Israel, as a nation lost “sheep” status temporarily until “the fulness of the Gentiles be come in” for we live in a Gentile dispensation. (see Ephesians 3:1-3) Remember, Paul’s writings should be in red letters in the Bible because they are the words of Jesus Christ to us in the Day of Grace.

Righetti struck seven of the first nine batters he faced and even overcame a delay in the eighth inning when umpire Steve Palermo suffered a knee injury. Outspoken Yankees owner George Steinbrenner did not attend the game, as he was in Florida celebrating his 53rd birthday with family. • 2004: The cornerstone of the Freedom Tower is laid on the World Trade Center site in New York City. Residents of the United States spend July 4th celebrating the country’s independence. Though July 4 has served as America’s Independence Day for centuries, many other significant and memorable events have taken place on the fourth day of July. 1744: The Treaty of Lancaster is signed in Pennsylvania. The treaty dictates that the Iroquois will cede land between the Allegheny Mountains and the Ohio River to the British colonies. 1776: The United States Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Second Continental Congress. July 4 actually marks the day the final wording of the declaration, which had been submitted on July 2, was approved. • 1802: The United States Military Academy officially commences operations. Located in West Point, New York, the USMA is the oldest of the five American service academies. • 1826: On the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of the Independence, the

Pros and cons to open-concept homes
Open-concept homes have become increasingly popular in recent years. An open-concept home is one in which the rooms flow into one another with limited obstruction from walls or other barriers. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 84 percent of new single-family homes have fully or partially open layouts. While they may seem like a new trend, open floor plans are anything but. Early American homes featured open, often one- or tworoom units built around the central kitchen/hearth. This maximized warmth and functionality. Homes evolved as incomes grew, and soon homes had several smaller rooms with specialized functions. What's old has become new again. However, before diving head first into a new home purchase or a big renovation to realize an open-concept dream, consider the pros and cons to determine if it's really right for you. Advantages of open floor plans Open floor plans facilitate the flow of natural light throughout a space and can promote air flow, helping to reduce warm or cool pock-
ets of air in otherwise closed-off rooms. Open homes make socializing easier, even when people are doing different things. While someone is cooking dinner in the kitchen, he or she can still interact with someone else playing video games in the family room or paying bills in the home office. Entertaining also is easier, as mingling with guests is much more convenient when walls are not getting in the way. A smaller home can feel much larger if it employs an open concept. The square footage is not divided into smaller quarters, which sometimes are rooms (such as formal dining rooms) that are only used a few times per year. This eliminates underused spaces and opens up sight lines in the layout. The value of real estate has risen dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and prospective buyers may prefer an open-concept plan because it can help them minimize building costs. Disadvantages of open floor plans Open layouts are not for everyone. The same sense of space that oc-
curs when walls are taken down may make rooms feel cavernous and less cozy, particularly in homes with ample square footage. In addition, privacy can be hard to come by when all rooms feed into one another. When the kitchen is not separate from the family room space, that makes it easy for noise to compromise the area's comfort levels. There is no hiding from noise in an open floor plan, as sounds from voices, television shows and appliances tend to echo and blend together. And if the home is a single-story layout, those noises from the main living areas also may carry to adjacent bedrooms. Smoke and smells are another thing to consider. When something on the stove spills over, a small range hood will not be practical for clearing smoke from a large space. Though the aroma of freshly cooked food is enticing, it can make it hard for cooks to keep guests out of the kitchen. Open-concept homes are popular, but homeowners should weigh the pluses and minuses to see if this trend is truly right for them. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

Meet Dan Belken, owner/operator of Belken Kennels BY TIFFANY GARDNER, GRANT, IOWA, LAFAYETTE SHOPPING NEWS QUESTION & ANSWER WITH DAN BELKEN How long have you been raising puppies? I started raising dogs when I was a junior in high school in 1969. What got you started raising puppies? I had a pair of Irish Setters. The Disney movie Big Red is really what started everything. What breeds have you raised? I have raised Dobermans, Rottweilers, Great Danes, Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and Labs. I am currently raising standard Poodles, Goldendoodle, and Aussiedoodle mixes. I’ve been raising Doodles for 15 years. Since moving to town two years ago, we had to cut back. We will only have three or four litters a year for the next couple of years. How do the seniors interact with the puppies? Many of the residents looked forward to my visits with the puppies. Some of the residents don’t get many visitors, or their families live further away making weekly (and even monthly) visits hard. This really gives the seniors (and staff!) something to look forward to and brings a smile to everyone’s face. You should see the excitement and smiles on the kid’s faces when we go to schools
or daycares! I couldn’t tell you who gets more excited, the seniors or the children! Could you describe a typical visit at a Senior Center? We would start taking the puppies in when they are at 3 to 4 weeks of age. We try to go on visits once a week until they reached 8 weeks old. At this point, they would be going to their new homes. Some of these new homes are the nurses, teachers, or parents who are present at the visits! How do the visits benefit the puppies and the seniors or children? It is great for the seniors as it boosts morale and gives them something to look forward to. Visits are fantastic socialization sessions for the pups. They learn to trust and be gentle with humans in return for the extra love they receive. It prepares the pups to move into homes with young kids by already being handled by, and used to, human interaction.
Photos provided by Dan Belken Lexy Updike (left) and Jenna Longhenry (right) also enjoy some of the puppy fun at the senior center.
How can facilities reach you to schedule a visit? I offer visits to senior homes as well as daycares and schools. I can be contacted by calling (608) 574-6617, email drbelke@yahoo.com, or visit the website at www.belkennels.org.

Hip Hip Hooray
How to make new friends after 50
SUBMITTED BY JOSHUA LINDSEY, MD, ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE AT SOUTHWEST HEALTH

ip pain affects most people at some point in their lives, whether it keeps you from playing a casual pickup game, gardening, playing with your kids, or carrying in the groceries. When a muscle is pulled or irritated, it typically gets better with rest, ice, compression, elevation, and time. But if the pain doesn’t go away, further treatment, whether at home or from a specialist, might be needed to help you feel better and get back to living a regular life. When your body is hurting, it can be hard to focus on everyday tasks. Treatment for common injuries and pains doesn’t always have to include surgery. You don’t have to live a life with hip pain. You can take actions during your day to help relieve and prevent future pain.
Stretch regularly. Flexibility and strength exercises are crucial to relieving hip pain. Although these exercises may result in temporary discomfort, they should not cause or aggravate pain. If an exercise causes pain, stop doing it or try going at a slower or gentler pace. If your hip pain is intense or longlasting, visit your primary care physician. Your provider may recommend further care and might refer you to a specialist for a closer look. One of the specialists who can help ease your hip pain is Harvard-trained orthopedic surgeon Joshua Lindsey, MD, at Southwest Health’s Orthopedic Institute. The Orthopedic Institute at Southwest Health now offers an innovative, minimally invasive approach for total hip replacement to help keep you moving. Dr. Joshua Lindsey uses the “anterior approach,” a surgical technique for hip surgeries without cutting the muscle, which means less
“When your body is hurting, it can be hard to focus on everyday tasks. Treatment for common injuries and pains doesn’t always have to include surgery.’’ Control your weight. Being overweight may increase inflammation in the body, leading to joint pain. Losing weight can reduce this inflammatory response. One study suggests that a 10 percent reduction in weight can significantly lower inflammation in the body. Exercise regularly. Staying active and doing appropriate activities for your age and physical condition can help build strength in your knee and joints. Start with lower-impact activities such as walking on a level surface, biking, and working out in the water are ways to be active but not stress your joints. Wearing supportive shoes such as tennis shoes instead of sandals and flip-flops is also helpful. Follow your treatment plan. Staying consistent with your prescribed treatment plan isn’t always as easy as it may seem. Many overexert their joints, stick with lifestyle habits that worsen their condition, forget to take their medications or even stop altogether. Talk to your primary provider if you’re struggling with your treatment. Together, you can make adjustments to find a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and needs.
scarring and less pain. The anterior approach procedure reaches the hip through the natural gap between muscles. This allows Dr. Lindsey to perform a much smaller incision on the front of the hip for quicker, more comfortable healing. Besides a smaller incision, patients will experience minor muscle trauma, less scarring and pain, a lower risk of hip dislocation, shorter hospital stays, and ultimately a faster recovery time. This anterior path allows for a rapid recovery from surgery because it’s an “intermuscular” approach in which muscles are moved during the procedure but not detached. With this approach, a patient has fewer precautions post-surgery. That’s because the hip stays more stable after surgery, and the muscles around it help prevent dislocation. “You deserve options, and you have that with the anterior approach to hip replacement. With the anterior option, you will have fewer interruptions in your recovery, getting you back to your regular life.” Says Joshua Lindsey, MD. M
aking friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during your school days, but these strategies can help men and women in midlife build new friendships. Identify your interests. Fiftysomethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested you are in a given activity, the more likely you are to stick with it. And the longer you stick with something, the more likely you are to meet like-minded individuals (i.e., future friends) willing to make similar commitments. Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had any readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it much easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runner’s club may have its own social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and
other groups via social media. Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, the theater, sporting events, and other day trips. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share your interests, providing the potential to build lasting friendships built on a foundation of shared interests. Broaden your horizons. Just because you’re in your 50s doesn’t mean your friends have to be. Don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Friends come in all shapes, sizes and ages, so you could be missing out if you’re not willing to extend a hand in friendship to people of different ages and backgrounds.
Just coasting into retirement? Let's have a plan.

Day trips for seniors

hen considering day trips, seniors should look for locales that are no more than two to three hours away. Such proximity ensures travelers will have plenty of time to see the sights and still get home at a reasonable hour. Need day trip inspiration? Here are some ideas to get started. Botanical gardens Botanical gardens are beautiful and relaxing places to spend a day. The Botanic Gardens Conservation International reports that there are between 296 to 1,014 botanical gardens and arboretums in the United States, while there are roughly 70 botanic gardens across Canada. People can tour topiaries, exotic plants, butterfly retreats, acres of rolling landscape, and even bonsai collections. Seaside towns Visits to the coast make for memorable, scenic excursions. Many boast quaint shops to purchase coastal trinkets or decor. Seaside spots also may boast their share of fishing charters or sightseeing cruises, and seafood fans will appreciate what these regions have to offer in the way of dining. Historic cities and villages Touring historic places of register, like Colonial Williamsburg or areas of historic Boston, can be a hands-on way to learn about the country’s history. They can provide more personal experiences than books and movies alone.

Zoos and aquariums
oost your retirement savings by practicing the same good money habits that apply to smaller savings goals. Small changes can make a huge impact on a long-term savings goal that has decades to compound and grow.
Interacting with wildlife is on the itinerary when visiting zoos and aquariums, and such establishments typically offer discounted admissions to seniors. From the famed San Diego Zoo to the Georgia Aquarium, it’s possible to get up close and personal with many species.
Eliminate roadblocks
Wine tasting A recent study from Wine & Vines magazine said there are 8,391 wineries in North America, and that number is on the rise. One is likely to find a winery to visit and sample the wares close to home. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch. Museums Museums are ideal day trip destinations because many are indoors. That means weather never needs to be an issue while visiting. With historic artifacts, paintings, sculptures, or niche items like pop art or collectibles, there are museums for just about every interest. For example, railway enthusiasts can visit the National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin, one of the oldest railroad museums in the country. Restaurant crawl Certain town centers and tourist destinations organize restaurant events where day trippers can enjoy tasting menus from various establishments for a single price. Day trips also can culminate at one specific restaurant. A new restaurant can be visited each month.

Make saving easier, more consistent and less time-consuming. Set up to automatically deduct your retirement contributions from your paycheck, or regularly transfer a certain amount to your savings account each month. Practice living with less Establish a plan to reduce spending (like pack a lunch or staying in). Put the money you saved toward your savings goals. It’s easier to cut spending when you see it as achieving a goal. Increase savings along with income Try to maintain your current lifestyle and expenses even as your salary rises. Put more toward your savings goals, rather than spending more. 5 steps to retire with your debt paid in full 1. Plan for tomorrow. While still enjoying the present, think about
3. Find a trusted financial adviser. Don’t try to plan for your financial future alone. Find a trusted financial adviser you’re comfortable with. Lay out your assets and debts, and be open about your retirement goals and timeframe. 4. Pay off your mortgage biweekly. Frequent, automatic payments shorten the term of your loan and reduce the amount of interest you pay your lender. Biweekly payments, allow you to make one extra payment each year. So, when you make biweekly payments on a 15-year mortgage, for instance, you’ll actually pay off your mortgage in about 13.5 years. In addition, put extra money toward your principal whenever your budget allows. 5. Plan for your physical security, too. Preparing for retirement requires more than just a financial plan. Enjoy hobbies and plan for how you’ll spend your time during this new stage of life.

Wellness for the young at heart MCG.METROCREATIVECONNECTION.COM

eaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for decades to come. Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. In 2018, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 86 percent of pet owners felt their pets make them feel loved while 73 percent said their pets provided a sense of purpose. Pets also can ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active and provide opportunities to connect with other people.
Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging. Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. That’s a significant benefit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every three adults age 65 and older experiences a fall each

year, and as many as 30 percent of those falls lead to serious injury. Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize
with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent. Individuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible. Various strategies can help people maintain mental and physical wellness as they make their way through their 50s and beyond.

The pros and cons of early retirement MCG.METROCREATIVECONNECTION.COM
R
etirement is a milestone that is often the byproduct of decades of hard work. Though a growing number of working professionals have no intention of ever retiring, the vast majority of adults look forward to the day when they can call it a career. The prospect of early retirement is enticing to millions of people. Though retiring early may seem like a no brainer for individuals in position to do so, a careful consideration of the pros and cons of early retirement can ensure people make the best decision. Benefits of early retirement For many people, early retirement is less about finding a beach to relax on and more about pivoting to a second career. In fact, a recent report from the Employee Benefit Research Institute indicated that 74 percent of workers plan to get a new job after they retire. In such instances, early retirement is
often about turning a long-time passion into a second career. That can help adults achieve a lifelong dream, making it one of the better reasons to retire early. Another advantage to retiring early is the chance to spend more quality time with family. One study from the American Psychological Association found that more than half of working professionals now check work emails after work hours, including on weekends. Forty-four percent even check their email while on vacation. Early retirement enables individuals to escape that round-the-clock career commitment, affording retirees a chance to spend more unfiltered quality time with the people they love most. Retiring early also provides an opportunity to escape a daily grind that many people have indicated has become increasingly burdensome in recent years. The 2021 Work and Well-Being Survey from the American Psychological Association found that 79 percent of the roughly 1,500 adults surveyed had experienced work-related stress in the month prior to participating. Work is a leading cause of stress for many people, and stress has been linked to a host of health problems. Individuals who can retire early can benefit from less stress in their lives. Disadvantages to retiring early

Retiring early can seem like a dream, but it could turn into a nightmare for people whose finances aren’t as robust as they need to be to support a lengthy retirement. One
report from the Boston College Center for Retirement Research found that around 50 percent of working families face a significant decline in their standard of living during retirement. Life expectancy has been on the rise in developed countries since 1900, so retiring too early carries some significant financial risk for people who have saved but not necessarily saved enough. Retiring early also could make people more vulnerable to cognitive decline than they would be if they keep working. One study from researchers at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews found that people who wait until age 67 to retire experience less cognitive decline than people who retire prior to turning 67. Out-of-pocket medical costs are another significant disadvantage to retiring early. Employer-sponsored medical insurance tends to cost individuals less than private plans, which is a significant consideration for individuals at a point in their lives when they may need to visit doctors more often. Early retirement has its advantages and disadvantages. Individuals must consider both to make the best decision for them.

What to know about creating a will MCG.METROCREATIVECONNECTION.COM
D
rafting a last will and testament is an essential component of estate planning. Despite the importance of having a will, a recent survey from AARP found that two out of five Americans over the age of 45 do not have one.
Estate planning can be tricky, which is why many people turn to attorneys to get the job done right. Attorneys who specialize in estate planning will no doubt discuss the following topics with their clients. Assets owned: Make a list of known assets and figure out which assets are covered by the will and which will have to be passed on according to other estate laws, such as through joint tenancy on a deed or a living trust. For example, life insurance policies or retirement plan proceeds will be distributed to your named beneficiaries. A will also can cover other assets, such as photographs, clothing, cars, and jewelry. Guardianship: Parents’ wills should include a declaration of who they want to become guardians their underage children or dependents.
MCG.METROCREATIVECONNECTION.COM
D Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will. Funeral instructions: Settling probate will not happen until after the funeral. Therefore, funeral wishes in a will often go unnoticed, states the legal advisement resource Find Law. Executor: An executor is a trusted person who will carry out the terms of the will. This person should be willing to serve and be capable of executing the will. People who die without a valid will become intestate. This means the estate will be settled based on the laws of where that person lived, and a court-appointed administrator will serve in the capacity to transfer property. This administrator will be bound by laws and may make decisions that go against the decedent’s wishes. To avoid this outcome, a will and other estate planning documents are crucial.

id you know that automotive accidents are one of the leading causes of injuries? In 2012, more than 5.6 million car accidents were reported to law enforcement and car insurance companies, and the numbers keep growing. The attorney referral service and legal information resource Find Law says the economic cost of car accidents is estimated at $277 billion each year. In addition to causing property damage and damage to the vehicle, car accidents can result in various bodily injuries that may impact a person’s ability to function and work. Some of the more common injuries include trauma to the head, back and neck. Many different treatments can help people who have been involved in auto accidents. Including chiropractic care in treatment plans may help people decrease their pain and improve their mobility. It is important for people involved in auto accidents to seek medical care immediately even if the need for medical attention doesn’t seem readily apparent. Adrenaline can staunch symptoms, and a person may exacerbate an injury if he or she hasn’t undergone a medical exam after a car accident. Persons involved in auto accidents can visit chiropractors as part of their postaccident treatment plans. Chiropractors
can perform various services to help people overcome their injuries. Assess invisible injuries Whiplash can produce symptoms hours or even days after an accident. Soreness, dizziness and pain may not register on X-rays or imaging tests. However, a chiropractor may have the tools to assess injuries that result from tension, misalignment and micro-tears in ligaments and muscles. Reduce inflammation Chambers Medical Group says that spinal manipulations and pressure release techniques can realign the spinal column and help release an anti-inflammatory substance through the body that can lower pain and inflammation. Improve pressure Manipulations also can reduce pressure in the neck area, which in turn may ease the pain of headaches, stiffness, dizziness, and even ringing in the ears, according to the chiropractors at Pain Stop Clinics. Chiropractic care may be used alone or in concert with other treatment options. Medical professionals can work together to provide a regimen that will ease pain and help patients get on the road to recovery.
