WELCOME!

The Verona Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism office proudly welcomes you to the heart of Wisconsin’s best outdoor trails and recreation, only 12 miles from our state capital. Whether you are here for a youth sporting event, visiting family and friends, or a long relaxing weekend, you will find that Verona lives up to its nickname, “Hometown USA.” Our friendly residents will greet you warmly in the city’s shops and restaurants, provide helpful tips on navigating area trails and outdoor recreational areas, and make you feel just like one of the locals. Not only does Verona boast some of the best hiking and biking in Wisconsin, we are also home to two local breweries, a winery, and a world-class chocolatier. Certainly, there is no shortage of new discoveries and experiences in our tiny corner of the Driftless Region. Come for a day, stay for a weekend — you won’t be disappointed. Halley Jones,

GET OUTDOORS Fishing/Canoe and Kayak Rentals Verona sits at the heart of the Upper Sugar River Watershed Watershed. Many of the 115 miles of streams are open to the public through non-profit efforts and national, state and county support of public fishing easements and trail development. Its watershed resources, particularly trout fishing, have been featured numerous times in the media. Sugar River Outfitters has day canoe/kayak trips and riverside camping packages. Day trips meet and end in Paoli, just a few miles south of Verona. Our shuttle will meet you on Canal Street, behind the Historic Mill. Paddlers can choose from three different trip lengths: ~4 hours, ~3 hours, or ~2 hours. Three departure times are offered between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Full details and booking info can be found at SugarRiverOutfittersWI.com.

Golfing Hawks Landing is an 18-hole championship course constructed with bent grass tees, greens and fairways. The course challenges all players with 65 bunkers, water features on 9 holes and native grass areas to contend with throughout. By hand mowing all greens, tee boxes and approaches, we are able to maintain playing surfaces at the highest levels. Hawks Landing has five sets of tees and provides enjoyable play for all golfing abilities. Our signature maroon tees measure 7,243 yards and will challenge the most seasoned golfer. University Ridge Golf Course derives its name from the landscape features left by the last retreating glacier. The course sits on the terminal moraine, where the Wisconsin Glacier stopped, forming the backbone of the ridge that separates the land into groups of rolling hills and valleys. The natural ridge dictated course construction and the designers followed the contours of the land to create a natural setting that overlooks the City of Madison.

GET OUTDOORS Hiking Military Ridge Trail is a 41-mile stretch that runs right through downtown Verona. The packed limestone trail is open for hiking, biking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and motorized wheelchairs. Cyclists over the age of 16 must have a Wisconsin State Trail pass or day pass that can be purchased at Miller and Sons Grocery Store or the Verona trailhead. Ice Age National Scenic Trail is one of only eight national scenic trails in the United States. Primarily for hiking, it showcases Wisconsin’s world-renowned glacial features. The Verona segment takes wayfarers on a 6.5 mile trek through farm fields, woods and prairies, along Badger Mill Creek, past glacial kettle ponds and through Badger Prairie County Park with acres of prairie flowers and grasses. Walter R. Scheidegger County Forest is a public recreation area in the Town of Verona on Range Trail. Public access to this nearly 80-acre site includes a 1-mile hiking trail, a shelter available for reservation, group camp, restrooms and a drinking fountain.

THINGS TO DO Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon/Verona Loop Festival For both viewers and participants, one of the best places to get caught up in the excitement of the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon is the Verona Loop Festival where masses of fans line North Main Street to watch the bicycle segment of the race. The Verona Loop Festival features food provided by several high school sports teams and serves as a fundraising activity for area youths while providing a safe and convenient place for fans to root on the athletes. Shuttle buses run between Madison and the festival during the day. The Ironman Triathlon is one of the most grueling events in the world. Competitors swim 2.4 miles, bicycle 112 miles and complete a 26.2-mile marathon. They have 17 hours to complete the event. The 2019 Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon is Sunday, September 8. Visit www.ironmanwisconsin.com. Main Street Trick or Treat on Halloween provides a fun and safe environment for children to trick-or-treat down Main Street. The businesses all welcome guests to join in (and sometimes have goodies for the parents!), and we invite businesses from all around Verona to set up a tent on Main Street and join in the fun as well! The event begins and ends at Hometown Junction Park. Call 608-845-5777 or visit www. veronahometowndays.com. Music on Main Every other Friday night from 5-8 p.m., we have live, outdoor music performances at Hometown Junction Park on Main Street. The audience is encouraged to bring a picnic, blankets or chairs and enjoy a free concert downtown! Alcohol is permitted in the park and there will be a food truck at Hop Haus Brewing Co. across the street! Dates for 2019 are June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26, and August 9. Call 608-8455777 or visit www.visitveronawi.com.

THINGS TO DO Verona Hometown Days Verona Hometown Days is an annual event, which is not only entertainment for the entire family, but serves as a large fundraiser for many community organizations including the Optimist Club of Verona, the Verona Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Fitchburg-Verona, American Legion and Auxiliary, many youth groups, and the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce. The long weekend features a Main Street parade, a carnival midway, fireworks and more. Fairgoers can play games, listen to music, enjoy the carnival and relax with food and cold beer. Entrance to the event, as well as many activities, are free. The 2019 Verona Hometown Days is May 31-June 2. Call 608-845-5777 or visit www.veronahometowndays.com. Verona Hometown Holidays The community gets together for a festive kick-off to the Holiday Season with our annual tree-lighting ceremony with weatherman Gary “Indiana” Cannalte from CBS and the Verona Fire Department’s 4-alarm Chili Supper at the Verona Senior Center! Our event is so much fun, Santa makes a special point to be there every year and take pictures (for free!) with the kids in attendance. There is also “Breakfast with Santa” the next day sponsored by the Verona Lion’s Club at State Bank of Cross Plains that includes pictures, free eye screenings and a continental breakfast. Then around noon, stop by Hometown Junction Park for a special ice sculpture demonstration, and drive around Verona to see all the ice sculptures around town! There will be lots to do around town, so check out our website at www.visitveronawi.com for all the happenings around town that weekend. The 2019 Verona Hometown Holidays is December 6-8.
