WIN a copy of new book Pegasus House
Filton’s Automatic Telephone Exchange on the A38 north of St Andrew’s Church in 2011
Towering telephone poles in the 1920s to the Bayswater exchange; and finally a further line to the Whitehall exchange from the Engine Division switchboard at Patchway. Telephone Poles They were high! As you can see they towered over houses and people. Locally the tallest was at the junction of Ashley Down
Road and Gloucester Road, which was 94 feet high. The picture of Filton in the 1920s also shows how many there were. I guess the materials they used for lines were very heavy compared with modern materials. The source of information for this story was: The Early Years of the Telephone Service in Bristol 1879-1931 by MJ Hall Ellis, published c.1980
The long-awaited restoration of Pegasus House was finally unveiled last month, ensuring the area’s rich aviation history will be part of its future, too. New book Pegasus House, published by Airbus Operations Ltd, looks at the landmark building’s role in aviation in Bristol, as well as some of the memorable aircraft produced here and the people whose vision shaped the industry. We have five copies of
Pegasus House to give away. To win, all you have to do is answer this simple question: What was the name of the supersonic, drooped-nose passenger aircraft built at Filton? Editor’s decision is final, email your answer to richard@ filtonvoice.co.uk or post to c/o Filtonvoice, 49 Dunkeld Ave, Filton BS34 7RQ. The first five correct answers drawn win.
