Filton street light petition is ‘dead in the water’

A petition aimed at restoring night time street lighting for Filton is “dead in the water” according to a councillor.

In last month’s Filtonvoice, local resident Ken Hoare said he wanted South Glos Council to reconsider the move, which the

authority says is aimed at saving money and reducing the carbon footprint.

He launched a Facebook petition which so far has gathered around 80 signatures.

He would need around 2,500 to prompt a debate at South Glos Council.

However at this month’s full town council meeting, South Glos councillor Adam Monk described the petition as being “dead in the water” due to lack of signatures.

Editor’s note

It seems like only yesterday when the first edition of Filtonvoice hit the streets of our town and I am slightly ashamed to say it has taken me until edition 26 to write my first editor’s note.

That said, after two and a bit years, it seems like a good time to reflect on the information we need and how we get it.

I have spent my whole working life in the ‘news’ business and I have seen colossal change in that time. The buzz word is ‘fragmentation’ ... in simple terms, we have gone from a fairly simple news framework of newspapers, TV and radio to a diverse world of internet, Facebook, Twitter and other social media along with the traditional methods.

For some readers, this will be a normal part of life ... for others, it will seem like alien territory.

Yet in all of this, the thing that has not changed is that if something affects our lives, we want to know about it - and we want to be able to discuss it.

This is why I believe it is vital that - whatever alternatives there may be - Filtonvoice must remain a fixture for EVERY resident in the town. We try to reach 100% of people but if, for any reason, you know of people not receiving the magazine, let me know on the contacts below. I hope you enjoy this latest edition.

Can you help police find jewellery?

Police are trying to track down this jewellery which was stolen in a burglary in Filton?

Detectives investigating a burglary in Broncksea Road, Filton, on Saturday, October 19, have released photographs of some of the items of jewellery stolen in the break-in.

It happened between 4pm and 11pm, when thieves forced a small window to get into the house. The stolen jewellery is almost all gold and includes necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and chains.

Pictured (clockwise from top left) are: large and small gold necklaces, a ‘Ganga Jamuna’ necklace, a silver chain and locket, a gold locket and chain, a child’s gold chain and locket, a child’s bracelet with the name ‘Humzah’, a gold and black beaded necklace, earrings and ring, gold bangles and a gold ‘bahi’ bracelet.

Filton’s Beat Team named ndsomerset.police.uk the best in the district

Filton’s Beat Team has been named as the best in the north east region of the Avon and Somerset policing area.

They were among dozens of men and women who serve their communities, going above and beyond the call of duty, who celebrated at the annual Neighbourhood Policing Awards at Cadbury House Hotel, Congresbury.

The awards are organised jointly by Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens and the Constabulary and reward dedicated officers, staff and volunteers for their hard work in ensuring the communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe.

The event was attended by more than 150 people including Lord Lieutenants, High Sheriffs and senior police officers.

Filton Inspector Bob Evely said: “We’re extremely grateful to all the people in Filton who took the time to put us forward for this award.

“We were delighted to be named the top team in the North East policing area, which includes the whole of South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset.

“We’ll carry on being as visible and accessible as we can to the community and working to keep the area safe from crime and disorder.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “The awards are a tribute to the fantastic people we have

The evening was compered by Deputy Editor of the Bristol Post Rob Stokes. The overall winners of the beat Team award were the Neighbourhood Beat Team officers from Avonmouth and Shirehampton.

Petrol can found after arson attack

Detectives investigating an arson at a family home in Filton have recovered the petrol can used to carry the accelerant to the scene.

The petrol can was found at the scene and has been seized for forensic examination. The can appears new and may have been bought in the days before the fire was started. Officers would like to speak to anyone who believes they may have information.

The investigation into the fire, which happened in the early hours of Monday, October 21, continues and a Bristol man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He was later released on bail.

Detective Inspector Jill Kells said: “We are asking for help from people who may remember selling a petrol can, saw someone filling one up or carrying one in Filton that night.”

Filton Athletic Football Club will be sporting smart new kit this season after an £800 deal with insurance firm LV. The club, which runs two sides at Elm Park, was given the cash for first team and second team outfits.

Tim Phillips, LV’s charity committee chair, visited the squad before a recent training session at Orchard School Bristol to officially hand over the kit to the players. He was

given a framed club jersey as a gesture of thanks.

Club spokesperson Pat Burge said: “We are delighted with the kit as we usually have to do a lot of fundraising.”

Filton Athletic play on Saturdays in Divisions 1 and 4 of the Bristol Suburban League.

Toy donation at local supermarket

Customer’s of Sainsbury’s East Filton have been donating new toys whilst the store has had their recent toy sale. Toys will be donated to local charities and groups and last year Sainsbury’s were able to donate to Barbara Russell Unit at Frenchay Hospital, a local women’s refuge and a local children’s group. Primary’s delight at Ofsted rating Shield Road Primary in Filton has been rated Good by Ofsted inspectors, with inspectors saying pupil progress and attainment has risen “sharply” in the past three years.

The judgement is an improvement on the previous rating of ‘satisfactory’ with the inspection carried out under the rules of Ofsted’s new, tougher framework.

In the four key areas achievement, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety, and leadership and management - the school was judged to be good.

Among the highlights were: • Teaching promotes good learning; • High attainers receive challenging work; • Lessons are fun, according to pupils; • Pupils behave well in and out of lessons; • Bullying is unusual and the school deals with incidents “effectively”; • There is very good support for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds; • The head, senior staff and governors work well together.

The inspectors said that to move to a rating of outstanding, teaching assistants need to be better utilised and attendance, while better than before, has room for improvement.

Head teacher Jim Mepham said the school’s success was down to a combination of addressing issues in teaching and learning, new appointments, work with governors and encouraging children to

He said: “All lessons were judged good or better and our attendance is now up to 94.4%.

“I am very pleased with this judgement, especially because the inspectors picked up on our high expectations and that there is a good environment for learning.

Filton’s new bus service launched The new bus for Filton has been delivered and details of the route announced.

The bus, which will extend across the whole of Filton as well as to Southmead Hospital and Parkway Station, is hoped to start running next month.

The timetable will see the 15-seater bus running six times daily, Mon-Fri (not Bank Holidays). The bus has a ramp and facilities for wheelchairs.

Prices are to be confirmed but

the service will be free for those with bus passes.

The service will be run in conjunction with Four Towns & Vale Link Community Transport which runs an on-demand service currently.

Funding of £50,000 for the project and purchase of the vehicle was obtained from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) as part of a £600,000 initiative across South Glos.

The bus will be of particular benefit in Conygre which has been without a proper service for some time.

Filton councillor Brian Freeguard, a director and trustee of Four Towns & Vale Link/ Severnside Transport Ltd, said: “I am delighted that all the hard work by the steering group is nearing fruition and I am urging residents of Filton to use this bus to make it a viable service for years to come.”

A South Glos spokesman said: “A number of schemes promoting sustainable travel in local communities throughout South Gloucestershire were approved for £600,000 of funding through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). The LSTF is a government funded project running across the West of England to increase sustainable travel. The maximum funding that could be applied for was £50,000 for each single project,”

Focus on choirs in the Filton area

With the popularity of choirs on TV, it is encouraging that people in Filton have such choice if they wish to take up a singing hobby. Here we take a look at some local groups

The lively group of women known as Avon Harmony Chorus, pictured right, is busy rehearsing for several events during the festive season, including a Christmas workshop. The Christmas workshop; “Just Sing Out for Christmas” on 30th November in Clifton, is for women who would like to find out more about singing four-part unaccompanied close harmony. The workshop will be suitable for any woman who enjoys singing, whether an experienced singer or complete novice, and by the end of the day, she will have learned to sing at least one Christmas song in four part harmony,.

Mr Hoare said: “How can money come before the safety of the people in Filton?”.

Another Facebook page, entitled ‘Turn the street lights back on in South Glos’, has been set up for South Gloucestershire residents to discuss their issues about street lighting. The group currently has more than 1,000 members.

Residents from across South Gloucestershire have been complaining that they feel unsafe, and have been reporting incidents of night-time crimes on the page.

According to reports, Avon and Somerset Police have noticed an recent increase in reports of criminal damage in Yate. However, it has not been confirmed that this is linked to part-time lighting.

Town councillor Melanie Drewett said on the Facebook group: “Turning off the lights at night is going back to the dark ages and is shocking that other options were not explored, for example every other light on or sensor lighting as they have in other cities.”

She added: “If in an area with high crime statistics the lights should be left on, then unfortunately as Filton and Patchway have been recognised as priority neighbourhoods due to their non affluent status and having high crime statistics, should they not remain on?”

One page member has questioned whether SGC are now paying more for their electricity because the power company has increased the tariff due to lower usage. However Cllr Monk stated that this was “not true”.

Since the clocks have gone back, lights are to be switched off between 12am-5am.

However, some residents have complained that lights are being switched off around 11pm and the council is working to ensure sensors work correctly.

Filton barber Mario backing ‘Movember’

Mario Parrinello, who runs the Filton BArber on Glooucester Road North, got the charity ‘Movember’ initiative off to a great start by giving fundraisers a clean shave before they grew their ‘tache’.

Mario carried out some hot towel shaves at the Swan Hotel in Almondsbury.

He will then return at the end of the month to remove all the moustaches, with, hopefully, lots of money having been raised.

He said: “It’s a pleasure and honour to be involved in such a great campaign. when you look into the statistics of cancer there’s not many of us who haven’t been touched by it in one way or another. This is a great way to raise awareness and funds and something that goes well with my trade. we are also offering free moustache trims to all MoBro’s during the month of Movember as we are an Official Mo Rated Barber.

Knitters’ cracking cards go on sale Six “Knutty Knitters” who met at St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School will be raising funds for charity again this Christmas following their hit “Knitivity” tour last year.

The women have created a Christmas card featuring the lifesized, knitted nativity scene that went on display at various venues around Bristol in 2012 in aid of St Peter’s Hospice.

The six friends – Alison, Jean Richards, Anne Iles, Eileen Agnew, Pat Dardis and Julia Worth – began knitting together in their spare time after meeting at the primary school where they worked and it was the death of founding member Christine

Walsh from cancer in 2011 that inspired them to use their talent to raise funds for the hospice.

St Peter’s Hospice head of shops Janet Loud said: “The cards themselves are gorgeous and show the knitted characters in front of the Suspension Bridge in the snow.

“The image looks Photoshopped because it’s so beautiful but it’s real!

“We’ve already sold lots of cards, with several local companies buying packs to send out to clients and suppliers, which is fantastic.”

The Knutty Knitters will be taking their Knitivity scene on tour again this year, with a camel, donkey and angel joining the display.

What will be in store for shoppers?

Next month, Asda will open its new Filton store as the centrepiece of the redeveloped Abbeywood Retail Park.

Here, we meet general store manager David Rolph and community life champion Anne Maddox.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

David: I come from Watford, I am married with two children, and have lived in Bristol since 2001.

Anne: I come from Surrey, I am married with four children, and have lived in Bristol for less than a week, having just moved from Birmingham!

How long have you been working with Asda and what roles have you had?

David: I have worked for the company for 28 years, in which time I have run 11 stores, both in the Bristol and London areas.

Anne: I have worked for Asda for just over two years in the Birmingham region where I started in admin and cash office.

I became a community life champion when the scheme was launched in March 2012.

Can you tell us what to expect at the new store?

David: I am really excited about opening a new store in my home town. Having last opened a new store in Melksham, I fully know what to expect and we have gone out of our way to ensure that all our new colleagues have great personalities and want to be there to serve our customers.

The retail park, which will be completely revamped with Asda as the main store, will be a great place to shop, eat and entertain.

Will there be clothes and other non-food items in the new store?

David: We will be offering our George clothing range as well as our general merchandise, but every clothing and general merchandise line that Asda stocks will be available in-store

via our click and collect service, with products available for collection within 24 hours at no additional charge – so we can help customers choose when they shop.

How many colleagues will you employ and what type of jobs are available?

David: The store will have approximately 250 colleagues, 220 will be new to the business.

Will there be home shopping options?

David: We launch home shopping on January 22, 2014, and we are still looking for personal shoppers and delivery drivers. All job applications are online at Asda.com/jobs.

Tell us about Asda’s community work and how local people can get involved.

Anne: Asda has a “Chosen

by You” voting scheme, where customers can nominate local groups and organisations to be voted for by our customers, using green tokens given out at the checkouts. This is a bi-monthly vote and the winner receives £200 from the Asda Foundation, while two runners-up will each receive £50. Alongside this we welcome local charities and groups to fundraise in store with bag packing or bucket collections.

I will also look to work

alongside the local police force, schools and council with varying projects according to local needs. In my last store these included organising “cuppa with a copper”, customer service and mystery shopper days for local schools, litter picks, healthy eating lessons for local schools, and working on a community garden and in an elderly care unit, to name but a few. Asda is one of the only supermarkets to have a dedicated colleague to work in the local community, and I am excited about getting our name recognised and respected in the local area for the work we do. Anyone can get involved, so come along to the store, or give us a call and I will be more than happy to see how we can help you.

How can people give feedback on the new store?

David: We will hold regular customer listening groups to gather feedback and listen to any suggestions they may have.

The team and I will be in the shop talking to customers every day and welcome any feedback.

‘Undesirables’ clog up avenue

Now that Kenmore Crescent has been practically turned into a private parking zone for residents, (the vast majority of which I note have private driveways); it’s not surprising that some of the displaced ‘undesirables’ are parking in Dunkeld Avenue, right.

I’m happy to flex my tolerance muscle and my NIMBY bone is not tingling in the slightest, but when they park right up against the edge of my driveway and others are parked opposite… turning my vehicle out of my driveway into Dunkeld is extremely tight…posing a risk of denting somebody’s pride…(and joy!).

Today I left a polite note about it but if it persists I foresee harsh words being exchanged about exercising a little consideration for local residents.

If all else fails, no doubt I should welcome the advice of the Kenmore Crescent champions about how to make a compelling case for the continued persecution of these no doubt hard working individuals and achieving similar private parking status here too during daylight hours, when all good Vampires are dormant in their coffins.

Appeal for driver after Filton bump On the morning of Tuesday October 15, whilst cycling through the roundabout at the junction of Gloucester Rd and Southmead Rd in Filton, my vehicle was slowly reversed into by a car giving way to another driver.

I was knocked off the bike, unscathed, but my front wheel

was buckled by the collision. The driver was very apologetic, giving me and the damaged bicycle a lift to my destination, and kindly proffering £15 (all the cash she had on her) towards the cost of repair.

While appreciating the gesture, I politely gave the money back, thinking the repair would merely be a matter of straightening the wheel at little or no cost.

However, a mechanic at Roll for the Soul cafe/workshop subsequently advised that a new wheel was required, and charged £24 for this component.

This job would normally have cost a further £10, if he had not been generous enough to waive the labour charge in consolation for a mix-up with repair dates.

As a result of the incident, I also incurred bus fares coincidentally, also totalling £24 - during the days when the bike was out of action.

While appreciating the collision was a genuine accident, I am wondering whether the lady might still be prepared to consider contributing towards these costs. If so, please email francisharvey@hotmail.co.uk Francis Harvey

I am a pensioner on £8,000 a year and no other income. I have rheumatoid arthritis and my gardening helps keep me fit.

How am I going to get rid of my garden waste?

It’s a crime that can have a lasting impact, especially if irreplaceable items of sentimental value are taken.

Spice Girl Emma visits maternity unit at hospital

Baby Spice Emma Bunton toured the maternity unit at Southmead Hospital this month to meet staff, mums and newborn babies to support the Mum’s the Word appeal.

Emma, below left, added her own hot air balloon to the Mum’s the Word donor wall – a colourful five metre long mural of hot air balloons flying over a typical Bristol scene by local artist Hannah Broadway.

Parents or families of babies born at Southmead can make a donation to have their child’s name added to a balloon to commemorate their day of birth.

After adding her balloon, Emma toured some of the birthing rooms and popped into the staff room to have a a cup of tea with midwives and doctors.

Ann Remmers, director of midwifery at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “We are so delighted that Emma came to visit us. It was great that the One Born Every Minute cameras were also here.”

Filton Sports & Leisure Centre is getting some welcome TLC! We are pleased to announce that we have started to make improvements and changes to the centre. October saw the start of the painting of the building with the hard working grounds and maintenance team taking the reins on the project.

We are mixing up the colours of the building with blue, cream and black and adding some new signage to make the centre stand out. Once the outside of the building is complete we will then be looking at moving inside with various small changes being made to the centre to improve our visitor experience.

History Ringing the changes as phones Phones are such a part of our lives today we forget they are a comparatively recent invention. Here Jackie Sims of Filton Community History looks at how Filton embraced the new technology.

Filton’s Telephone Exchanges The start of the telephone system across the UK was confused as many different companies established services. Manchester and London established the first within a few days of each other in autumn 1879. By the end of 1879 Bristol had an exchange. By mid1887 trunk services had been connected to Bath, Gloucester and Cardiff.

Belle Vue Cottages in 2004 30, 1900. Mr Collins’ daughter Lilly operated the manual exchange.

The automatic exchange at Filton was built in about 1930 and services transferred there from Belle Vue Cottages. An automatic system was achieved across the Bristol area at midnight on November 28/29, 1931. The service is still provided from there today.

A tale of Bristol Enterprise It must have been in the early 1950s that Mr MacKensie, the estates manager at the Bristol Aeroplane Company, thought of a way to save his company

thousands of pounds on phone calls. BAC made a great many trunk calls to London, and the estate manager wrote to ask if the Post Office would rent them an out-of-exchange line from Filton to a London exchange.

This meant the company’s calls to London would be charged as untimed calls instead of timed long-distance trunk calls. This request rather set the Post Office by the ears, for nothing of that sort had ever been asked for before. The first out-of-exchange line was connected to the London Whitehall exchange. This was so successful that in 1953 the company rented a second line

Filton’s Automatic Telephone Exchange on the A38 north of St Andrew’s Church in 2011

Telephone Poles They were high! As you can see they towered over houses and people. Locally the tallest was at the junction of Ashley Down

Road and Gloucester Road, which was 94 feet high. The picture of Filton in the 1920s also shows how many there were. I guess the materials they used for lines were very heavy compared with modern materials.

Turning a tenner into a tidy sum for charity is a challenge being taken up by enterprising students at Abbeywood School, Stoke Gifford, and South Gloucestershire College in Filton.

The Deki Tenner Tournament takes place this month and aims to help people in the developing world change their lives while giving young people the chance to put their skills to the test.

Entrants are given a £10 loan to start a business – from pet care to cake baking – and the proceeds are then reinvested in a second enterprise with the aim of making as much profit as possible. Proceeds are then invested as loans with people in the developing world to support their business ventures.

Parish Priest of St Teresa’s, Filton and St Vincent’s, Southmead

A friend rang me the other day to tell me that he had the temporary loan of a metal detector.

He had used it on his own garden and had found absolutely nothing. He wondered if it would be possible to come and search the old orchard, on our grounds next to the Church car-park. I agreed of course, as long as I could be there with him.

He came yesterday and we started seeking treasure!

Needless to say that after a couple of hours and a couple of false alarms we found absolutely nothing, not even a bottle top or an empty can of

beer. I cannot say that I was surprised as you hear of people spending years with such devices and they never find anything.

But occasionally you read a story of someone who does and they hit the national headlines with such straplines as “huge treasure trove found in field”.

Such stories make metal detecting alluring, if in reality, rarely productive.

It reminded me of a story that Jesus told about a man who found some lost treasure in a field.

He went off and sold everything he had to buy the field, so as to be able keep the treasure.

People say that Jesus told this story as a way of explaining to people what the Kingdom of God is like; something precious, something rare and special.

Whilst this may be true, I think we can also interpret the story in another way.

The lost treasure can mean those things in our lives that cannot be given a price; things like friendship, family, relationships, love. If these are found, then we should do everything to hold onto them.

So my friend and I will have to find somewhere else to look for lost treasure for the moment. I wonder what we might find?

Filton-based Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) is offering to give talks to local community groups and organisations in 2014.

The charity provides an air ambulance service for the 2.1m people of Bristol, Bath and the surrounding counties. To pay for the helicopter the charity needs to raise £1.5 million a year and to do this, it doesn’t receive any funding from the government or National Lottery, relying entirely on the generosity of the people they serve.

Speaking of the talks that GWAAC offer, head of fundraising Patricia Gaitan said: “We value giving talks to members of our local community because it helps us to spread awareness about our charity and the great work our air ambulance does.”

Saturdays thrill at lights switch-on

Fans gathered to mark the start of Christmas at The Mall in Cribbs Causeway with chart topping girl group, The Saturdays, who switched on the Christmas lights and welcomed Winter Wonderland to the shopping centre.

Even though the group were missing their fifth member, Frankie Sandford, the girls delivered their well-known hits such as Just Can’t Get Enough, Higher and their recent number one UK single, What About Us. The event was free for those who queued for tickets in the previous weeks although donations were asked for charity, Help For Heroes, which supports armed forces personnel wounded during their time in service.

event – hosted the event. Mark welcomed the ambassador of Help For Heroes, Paddy Dixon, alongside giant teddy bears, who thanked the crowd for attending the event and giving donations to a charity that helped support him after he was injured in Iraq.

A passion for percussion... and all that jazz When I reached the end of my career in aero engine design I wondered what I might eventually take up in retirement.

Something I hoped I would really enjoy.

I was already a Northavon District councillor (now South Gloucestershire) and a parish councillor (now town) so I was already actively involved. But I needed to take up something different. Something to take me away from endless arguments in the council scene. Something I could really enjoy.

As a one-time drama critic for the Bristol Post I thoroughly enjoyed the numerous visits I had made to concerts in village halls over a wide area. I had come to know several actors and accomplished musicians.

I was told by the Post’s features editor that I would find some of the very best talent in and around Bristol. Believe me, he wasn’t far off the mark.

I had hitherto played many parts in amateur drama “Up North”, both in village concerts and on the professional stages of Bradford, Leeds and Derby. But the standard in Bristol surpassed all expectations. It was firstclass.

Additionally I held a great liking for music from the Miller era and jazz of New Orleans. In fact, I loved all kinds of music,

especially that with a lively beat.

I had taken regular lessons on the piano. But the insatiable rhythms took precedence. So much so that when my mother noticed I had an “agitating habit” of rattling my knife on my dinner plate she vowed to put an end to it and bought me a drum kit for my birthday. “Now rattle that to your heart’s content,” she implored. “And keep off the plates.”

The drum kit took hold of me completely and I made regular visits to London to take a few lessons from one of the city’s top professionals who was no stranger to the big band scene, especially in the West End. Every lesson was a nightmare.

“How on earth will I ever be as good as that?” Was I wasting my money or was I just a crazy youth trying to imitate the jazz greats? I came away from every lesson virtually demented. My very skilled tutor would twist the sticks around his finger tips and crash the symbols. “No, you don’t do it that way,” he would imply. Never in 100 years would I be able to play like that, I thought.

On leaving engineering the initiative was there to follow an earnest desire to get back into the musical scene. I became an entertainment agent. I obtained a licence from the council –

Swingtet – Geoff Weldrake, Graham Rawlings and Douglas Daniels “Douglas Daniels Promotions” was the title I chose.

To an outsider the work of an agent sounds exciting. It is, but it can be hectic at times. I always recall my encounter with a professional violinist. Securing him for a high-class dinner date I needed him to entertain around the tables as guests were dining.

He was outstandingly good.

I decided later to arrange a recording session and employed an accompanying pianist. At a lull in recording he confided that he was equally proficient in both classics and jazz.

“Come to my home in Keynsham,” he suggested. “And bring your drums!” Needless to say, I willingly complied.

After a “play-off” we decided something was missing. It was a good bass player. We found one in Bristol’s renowned jazz joint, The Old Duke, in King Street.

Together we came to life.

“What shall we call ourselves?” they asked. “Swingtet,” I suggested.

And so emerged a new

name in the Bristol jazz scene.

I recalled our first recording session. The pianist with his grand piano in his music room.

Myself with my drums in the lounge while the bass player occupied the landing. I thought he would go down well there.

The recording engineer was content among the pots and pans in the kitchen. We kept together with earphones playing our individual parts.

When we played on Radio Bristol’s Morning Show we sold 250 CDs in a fortnight. A percentage of each disc sold went to St Peter’s Hospice All this came vividly back to my mind recently when I received a phone call. It was from the pianist. “I’m 90 years young today,” he informed me.

He sounded as lively as ever he did. And so indeed is his music.

We went so well together. Shall we have a reunion? Maybe we will. St Peter’s Hospice will remain our chosen charity from any CDs we might yet sell.

At some stage during their careers, most writers resort to mining their pasts for material.

Few, however, have a story to tell that is as remarkable as Martin Figura’s.

A much longed-for son born between two daughters, the nine-year-old Figura’s childhood was shattered the night his father, a Silesian refugee who settled in Britain after the Second World War, murdered his mother. Frank Figura was subsequently diagnosed with mental health problems and sent to Broadmoor, while Martin

Avon Valley Railway’s Santa Steam Specials start on Sunday November 24 and you could be aboard.

Father Christmas, accompanied by his helpers, will make his way along the train, stopping to talk to the children and, providing they have been good, give them each a present.

The Santa Special Experience takes approximately one hour.

November: Windows 8.1 Earlier this year we wrote an article about Windows 8, the new operating system for Windows. Now they have released a major update called Windows 8.1.

There has been a lot of discussion about Windows 8. Some people love it and others find it too different to previous versions of Windows. The hope was that the first big update to Windows 8 would fix many of the issues and I am pleased to say that it has.

What are the benefits?

The start button is back. It was odd having Windows without a start button as that was often the way we all took control of the system.

If you click it, it takes you to the start screen but if you right click on it, you get a menu with lots of options such as the control panel.

You can also bypass the start screen when you start up. Searching for items is also much improved with just one box to find all your apps or files. If you currently have Windows 7 or an earlier version of Windows you do not have to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

However there would be a cost involved if you wanted to. The update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 is free. Always make sure any critical updates are installed and you have a backup of all your files before you try to upgrade.

A fundraising Line Dance for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) was a tremendous success and raised £526, which has now risen to £551.

This money will make a real difference to the lives of people affected by MND. Those attending the event had such an enjoyable evening that some requested we do it again.

Many thanks to everyone who helped us raise this fantastic amount of money, helping us to fight this horrible disease, and a special thanks to Eden Grove Methodist Church for the use of the Church Hall and thank you

to Lloraine Sims for leading the Line Dancing and giving up her time so generously..

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is an incurable condition that paralyses the muscles, leaving people unable to do the everyday things the rest of us take for granted.

MNDA Bristol Branch are working to make a real difference to the lives of people affected

by MNDand to help fund and promote research to bring about an end to MND, support families and carers and enable those with MND to receive the best possible care.
