Transport charity in appeal for parking spaces after 13 vehicles destroyed in arson attacks Four Towns and Vale Link Community Transport has put out an appeal for secure parking for their vehicleas after a spate of arson attacks in the early hours of Sunday, April 3. This included an attack on several vehicles parked on the Rolls-Royce site at Filton, where Four Towns and Vale Link Community Transport based their minibus fleet. Thirteen vehicles were damaged by fire and only one of these might be repairable. This is half of their fleet. Other vehicles were also damaged including two vehicles belonging to the Bristol Methodist Church. Four Towns and Vale Link Community Transport, which provides transport for people with mobility issues in areas including Filton, Patchway, Bradley Stoke, Almondsbury, Alveston, Frampton Cotterell, Olveston, Thornbury and Winterbourne, saw 13 vehicles damaged during a spree between 1am and 4.40am on Sunday, which saw a total of 23 vehicles destroyed in Bradley Stoke, Little Stoke, Patchway and Stoke Gifford. The charity has been able to restore most of its services, despite losing half of its fleet, but now faces a new challenge as it has been told to move its remaining vehicles off the parking space Rolls-Royce had let it use free of charge before the arson attacks. A spokesperson for the charity said: "We are pleased to advise that we are currently managing to operate an almost normal service and hope to have some breathing space to sort things out even more in the next two weeks when the schools are on holiday.

"However, we are now searching for somewhere to park our vehicles as Rolls-Royce, who have kindly allowed us to park our vehicles free of charge on their site for many years, have now requested that we move our vehicles off site by next Tuesday, April 12. "We have the potential of a short term fix with the help of South Gloucestershire Council but this will be a little out of our usual area of operation. "There is also hope of a longterm solution but this is few months away." Four Towns and Vale Link is appealing for anyone who has secure parking available for its vehicles for around six months in the Patchway, Filton and area to get in touch. The charity can be reached by phone on 01454 250500 or by email at info@4tvl.org.uk. The spokesperson added: "We are very grateful for the overwhelming messages of support and offers of help we have received. We are doing our very best to meet the current needs of our members and will seek support as required." Detectives investigating the fires in South Gloucestershire have made two arrests. A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson while a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of the same offence. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Greaves said: “We’ve received a tremendous response from the public to help us with our enquiries. While we’ve made arrests, our investigation is still progressing and we continue to ask any witnesses or anyone with information or footage relating to this investigation to contact us.”

by Shane Gibson ario Saeed is a professional fighter who lives and trains near Filton. Mario is currently sponsored by The Village Gym and has fought for many different promotions. He is also the head coach of his own martial arts gym, Trojan Free Fighters Bristol. Last month the gym was moved to a new venue on Newfoundland Road, in the old Staples building. Mario teaches over two hundred children each week, and having observed one of the classes, I can say that it is clear

that the children love being in the gym and are enjoying the teaching. I asked Mario what led him to become a fighter. “When I was a child, I was a little troubled, but when I turned 13 years old, somebody gave me a chance. They suggested that I become a fighter, and I became super resolute. I started Wrestling, Brazilian Jujitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and I just kept turning up, every day. At first it was a hobby, but then I became pro, I fought all over the world and on TV in a big arena.”

Working alongside Mario is Naima Ali Robleh. Naima is a former PE Teacher and the second head coach at Trojan, working with the children and running the women’s only classes. Born in Sweden, Naima got involved in sports from an early age. She said: “I grew up in Sweden and every weekend I was at a club playing football. Football is bible in Sweden. We also learned circus skills whilst at school. I moved here with my family when I was 9 years old, and we did not do much as we were focused on learning the language. I missed a few years of my life during that period, but at college I got into Olympic weightlifting and from there, boxing.” Mario, why did you become a teacher? “I just want to give back to the community. There are so many kids that come here, particularly from around this area who would go in the wrong direction, because after school, they have nothing to do. So, I literally put the price here as cheap as possible, less than £2 per session so everyone can afford it. I instil in these kids discipline, respect and more importantly to be dedicated, to understand what to work hard means.” Mario explained that his gym is not just beneficial for the children that attend but also their parents and the students who attend the adult classes.

“I had been in Thailand in a very tough environment, and I had told myself that when I return to the UK I would build a gym with a family environment, so when they come in here after a difficult day, they can leave here with a smile on their face and feel better about themselves.”

happen, but I love it! I love the location. We are in the middle of town opposite the M32 and there is enough car parking space for everybody. "More important, though,

is what the gym can do for the children around here. Trojan is surrounded by St. Paul's, Barton Hill and Easton which have some of the highest crime rates in the Turn to Page 13

Naima, what led you to working with Mario? “That is a good question… Before I met Mario, I wanted to try out a new sport, I tried Muay Thai at another gym but did not like it. However, Mario’s place was next door at the time, and he invited me to do boxing and pad work. And BOOM! Instant connection. If I can click with my coach and they love what they do, how can you not love it. That is what I think everyone feels when they come here (Trojan), that energy and charisma.” And how did you start teaching the classes? Naima: “I asked Mario how could I improve as quickly as possible? He told me to come and help out with the kids' classes. This was around four months after I started. Slowly I got addicted. I was at every single class. I became assistant coach for the kids’ classes and then I began to lead the ladies' kickboxing classes.” The gym has just opened at a brand-new site. How are you both feeling about it? Mario: “It took a lot of arduous work to make this

Rail pioneer portraits at Filton station Severnside Community Rail Partnership have commissioned Artist Valentina Huxley to create a series of portraits for Filton Abbey Wood Station. These works celebrate four individuals from under represented backgrounds who have strived for progress and made a difference on the railways. The four subjects are; • Alero Abbey, Area Manager at London Underground and SWIFT Board Member at Women in Rail. • Asquith Camile Xavier, the first non-white train guard at Euston railway station in London. • Wilston Samuel Jackson, Fireman and driver of The Mallard, Elizabethan and The Flying Scotsman and the first Black train driver in Britain. • Trudy Aarons who became one of Britain’s first black female train drivers. Valentina is an emerging artist who works with visual arts and poetry. Their previous work involved a city-wide exhibition with Rising Arts Agency who are a community of young creatives mobilising others for radical social, political and cultural change. Valentina also wrote and performed a new poem at the launch on Tuesday, 19th April. The project has been kindly supported by GWR, Community Rail Network and Network Rail.

Filton Cubs spring into life at special sleepover The last Friday in March saw 31 Cubs from 1st Filton Scout Group joining another 200 Cubs from around North Bristol in a “Bounce Back” sleepover at AirHop trampoline park. This was a chance for young people and leaders to get back together and have some fun……it was called a sleepover but everyone knew from experience that sleep was going to be optional. The Cubs met in Asda car park and walked to AirHop where they were quickly signed in and got their socks; finding a space to put their sleeping bag was a bit of a struggle but soon the Cubs were watching the safety video and then….off for 2 hours' bouncing mixed with a dodgeball tournament. This seemed to build up an appetite for the Cubs as the pizzas for supper quickly disappeared. It was now time to slow things down and prepare the Cubs for

sleep…..after watching a film with a hot chocolate drink they then made their way to their sleeping bags. The leaders were pleasantly surprised that the majority of Cubs went to sleep

quite quickly. But all too-quickly the official wake-up call came on the Saturday morning; the Cubs had another opportunity to refuel with breakfast followed by ….. another hour of bouncing.

Eventually all good things come to an end and at 9am it was time for the Cubs to pick up all their kit and make their way to Asda car park for their parents to pick them up. Several then took the opportunity of catching up on their sleep on the short trip home. Some of 1st Filton leaders were so excited about this event that they did a repeat trip with the Beavers the following week. This was not the usual Cub camp but 1st Filton Scout Group are always looking for different adventures for our young people. So if you are looking for a new challenge and want to give opportunities to more young people please visit our website http://1stfiltonscouts.co.uk and click on “Volunteering”. Filton Town Council roundup

Councillors to investigate park improvements Filton's Community Plan could be 'superseded' by a Neighbourhood Plan. Councillors were given a presentation by Danny Dixon of South Glos Council about how Neighbourhood Plans work. The plans are aimed at involving the community in issues affecting planning and developing 'aspirations' for the area. As Filtonvoice reported last month, a £5,000 Community Plan, funded by the council and created by the team at the FACE charity, has outlined five ares where the town could be improved. But councillors said the more formal Neighbourhood Plan, which could take several years to create, would effectively absorb some of the ideas from the Community Plan. Councillors asked Mr Dixon how the Neighbourhood Plan would work.

He said the ideas would be 'community-led'. Cllr Alan Bird was told that a Neighbourhood Plan could help to protect green spaces. Mr Dixon said: "A Neighbourhood Plan is meant to be community-led, have members of public on board and (guided by) surveys and consultation. Neighbourhood Plans have invigorated communities across country."

He urged councillors to engage with communities which had already done it. In other business, a series of proposals by Cllr Brian Mead were discussed. This followed discussion he had had with residents on the Filtonvoice-run Filton News and Views Facebook group. Litter was one topic and councillors raised the possibility of its own ground staff helping

out or employing someone to pick litter. Councillors voted to investigate redeploying its own staff. Councillors also: • Agreed to discuss the skate park with users to find out how it could be improved. Cllr Adam Monk cautioned against giving guarantees the council could not keep. • Agreed to investigate maintenance issues at Elm Park and draw up priorities. They added that footpaths at Elm Park are not 'rural' and so should be South Glos's responsibility. • Agreed to investigate the possibility of a community run at Elm Park, although concerns were raised about parking. They rejected a proposal to get involved in lane gating for residents.

Anger as residents silenced over 7-bed HMO by BBC LDRS staff for Filtonvoice Dozens of residents fighting plans to turn another Filton family home into bedsits have been denied the chance to state their case to councillors, sparking anger. Labour Cllr Adam Monk, who represents the ward on South Gloucestershire Council, asked for the application for a change of use and extensions to 19 Branksome Drive, pictured, to be heard by a planning committee because of objections from 59 neighbours and the town council. But the request was controversially refused by development management committee chairman Conservative Cllr Keith Burchell on the grounds that no “valid” reasons were given for the objections, and the application was instead decided in private by a council planning officer who granted permission.

Addressing the committee two days after the decision was published, Cllr Monk said the system was “not fit for purpose” and that the householders had

been stripped of their right to put their arguments to members. It is the latest twist in a saga that has seen Filton become a battleground for conversions

of family homes into houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). The council has introduced new rules designed to prevent an over-concentration of

bedsits in any one area, but the supplementary planning document (SPD) has a loophole that means only officially registered HMOs are taken into consideration when judging how many there are nearby. It has led to several occasions where the planning committee has had to decide between believing the council’s own figures for the number of bedsits in a locality, which tend to be lower than the 10 per cent maximum in the SPD, and locals’ estimates, which include unregistered properties such as those that don’t require a licence, and tend to be higher. The officer’s report into the application, by Likemind Developments, to convert 19 Branksome Drive into a sevenbed HMO said Filton Town Council objected partly because the immediate neighbourhood already had an 11.2 per cent concentration of HMOs. But the report said that the official figure was only 5.7 per cent, well below the 10 per cent

www.filtonvoice.co.uk

Cllr Adam Monk and Cllr Keith Burchell address the meeting threshold, which Cllr Burchell highlighted in his written refusal notice to Cllr Monk’s call-in request when he decided that none of the reasons behind the objections were sufficient. Cllr Monk told the meeting: “I would like to ask the committee if they feel that the process is fit for purpose. “Fifty-nine people have lost their opportunity to speak or have their concerns heard. “They have no right of appeal,

unlike an applicant. The process is not working as it should.” He said the grounds for the objections, such as parking issues, noise and an overconcentration of HMOs, were matters of opinion that could be argued as reasons to refuse the application and should not have been simply dismissed by Cllr Burchell as being invalid. “We all stood to represent the public, yet on this occasion people have decided the public

do not have the right to speak,” Cllr Monk said. He said he only found out his referral to committee had been refused when he was told by residents and that neither officers nor the committee chairman had shown the courtesy to inform him. Principal planning officer Marie Bath told the meeting she agreed that there should be a procedural change where ward members were automatically notified of decisions to accept or reject call-in requests. She said a briefing note and training was being prepared to provide all councillors with guidance on the type of evidence officers were looking for when HMO applications were referred to committee. Conservative Cllr Ernie Brown said: “Cllr Monk is quite right. He’s an elected member and an elected member should be able to call something to committee.” Cllr Burchell said: “Under the constitution the chair has the right to refuse it.”

New plans as Brabazon continues to expand YTL Developments has submitted a planning application to update the masterplan for Brabazon, the new neighbourhood for Bristol being built on the historic former Filton Airfield. The Malaysian firm originally announced plans to revise the masterplan for Brabazon in 2021. Since then, the team has spent months meeting with local people and businesses, charities, community groups and public bodies across Bristol and South Gloucestershire to create a shared vision for the most exciting new city district in the south west, with the supersonic YTL Arena Bristol at its heart. The revised masterplan, developed in collaboration with world-renowned, locallybased architects Feilden Clegg Bradley (FCB) Studios, was submitted for approval to South Gloucestershire Council in early April. YTL already has planning permission – granted in 2018 - to develop Brabazon into a new community. In addition, in 2020, the company also received consent to reimagine the iconic Brabazon Hangars – where every UK Concorde was built – into a supersonic 17,000 capacity arena for Bristol. Since then the housing crisis and climate emergency have only got more acute, while there is also a greater imperative to ‘level-up’ every region of the UK following the Covid-19 pandemic. A spokesperson said: "As the largest area of brownfield land in the south west, located along existing public transport routes and at the heart of a world-leading employment cluster less than 5 miles from Bristol city centre, Brabazon is perfectly placed to help Bristol and the wider region tackle the challenges we all face. "Yet under the current consented masterplan, Brabazon would remain a suburban location. The updated masterplan is designed to ensure instead that it becomes a new urban destination that lives up to the legacy of the former Airfield’s pioneering past, driving local prosperity for the next generation." Seb Loyn, Planning and

Development Director for YTL Developments said: “Bristol and South Gloucestershire face a housing crisis and need to build more than 100,000 new homes within the next two decades. “But it is not enough to just build homes: if we are to tackle the climate crisis, we need to make sure we build more sustainable homes in the right places. "This means on brownfield land along existing transport corridors like at Brabazon, where public transport connections and active travel routes provide a genuine alternative to cardependent lifestyles. “Brabazon sits on major public transport corridors, including the M1 MetroBus route and Concorde Way cycle path. A train service from the new rail station being built at Brabazon will connect to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes when operational in 2023. “Nowhere in the West of England is better placed to build the new homes, offices, schools and community facilities we need, and to do so in a way that is environmentally and economically sustainable. “Crucially, additional homes and offices will only be built as and when improved public transport connections

come forward. The proposals submitted today have a series of checks and balance in place to ensure that increased density can only be delivered at the same time as the additional public transport needed to support it.” The revised masterplan is designed to meet the needs of local people while also delivering on the objectives of both the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Plan. The overarching objective of the NPPF is to ensure development is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Economically, the revised masterplan for Brabazon is forecast to create over £5billion of added economic value, with sufficient commercial space to support over 30,000 jobs. Socially, it represents a huge investment in the community that changed the world when it built Concorde, with three new schools, a health centre, community facilities and over 35 hectares of new public green spaces, including the largest new urban park in the south west for 50 years. And environmentally, the new masterplan makes best use of the largest area of brownfield

land in the south west and will catalyse major upgrades to public transport, when the alternative is unsustainable single-use development in out-of-town locations and on green belt land. The vision for Brabazon also aligns with South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Plan. With two new primary schools, one secondary school and provision for a major higher education or research institute, the revisions to the masterplan will help to give the best start in life for young people. As a multi-generational community, it will support those most in need to help themselves, with student accommodation for young people, through to retirement properties for older people. At the same time, the flexible housing framework will encourage inclusive communities and sustainable growth, with the potential to deliver over 1,000 new affordable homes within a ’15-minute neighbourhood’, where every daily need or essential service is less than a 15 minute walk or bike ride away. While the revised masterplan for Brabazon is being assessed by the planning authorities, YTL Developments is continuing to deliver the first phase of new homes at Brabazon.

The martial arts team transforming kids' lives

From Page 5 city, and so I collaborate closely with the police, and try to put on as many activities as we (Trojan) can for the kids.” Mario feels that the gym's main asset is that it can provide a safe and constructive family environment that enhances everyone’s soft skills. “Some of the kids do not have families, they come with Social Services, these kids have been through tough times. When they come here, they feel like they are getting somewhere. "You know, when I talk to them, I am strict, they sit down, and they pay attention. The parents have given me feedback that their children are doing better at school, their behaviour is better, and they are more respectful.” And Naima, what do you believe Trojan can bring to the community? “The majority of our young students are from around here, and these kids have never been exposed to martial arts other than tv shows. To see them come in with the Gi on and belts properly tied, you can see its opening their minds to a whole new experience. Every moment they are here I can see their

confidence developing, they are speaking up for themselves, and I can see from the moment that they step on to the mat, that they feel that this is where they belong. Seeing how happy they are is the best part of my day. It motivates me to train harder.” Going forward, how do you both see Trojan evolving? Mario: “In the next three years Trojan will have a thousand students. We will help change the lives of a thousand people and change it for the better. For me, if I can help change the life of just ten people, and they become a doctor, a lawyer, or a police officer instead of going to jail, I will feel like I did my job right.” Naima: “I want it to be known throughout the UK as the best jiujitsu gym for women, men, and kids, not just for men. Woman’s jujitsu is slowly growing and now in the mixed classes women are taking up half of the mat, which is great.” Mario, how do you feel about what is being built here? “I always look for peace and not headaches. I once had everything that people could dream of but that could not make me happy. Now I am at peace, the mat is my home. We cannot control what will happen tomorrow, but I know every second I am in here I am going to enjoy it. "It is about living in the present. "One story that I will always take with me is, after a radio interview that I gave, a parent rang into the show to say that the classes we hold saved not only his relationship with his child but also his life.”

Filton MP Jack Lopresti

I'm backing apprenticeship programmes in Filton

A

t the time of writing this on the last Thursday before Easter, prior to spending time with family and loved ones, my thoughts remain with the people of Ukraine who continue to endure the invasion of their country by Russian forces and the atrocities which are taking place as a result. Following on from my questions in the House of Commons during the March Ukraine debate and subsequently in Prime Ministers’ Questions, I remain very proud of the support and assistance that our Government and country continue to provide Ukraine, both in terms of military equipment and the enormous generosity shown by members of the public in making their homes available to Ukrainians, who have had no option but to flee their homeland, via the UK Homes For Ukraine scheme. I was particularly proud

during the second weekend of April to see our Prime Minister walking the streets of Kyiv with President Zelensky on a surprise visit to Ukraine, making him the first G7 leader to travel to Kyiv since Putin launched this invasion in February. The PM did not make the trip empty handed but pledged over 100 armoured vehicles and anti-ship missiles, as he praised 'lion' Zelensky and condemned 'Putin’s monstrous aims’ at the joint press conference. As always, there is much to

update on regarding my work and news from our local area. Apprenticeships, social mobility and opportunity: Following on from National Apprenticeship Week in February, I take an ongoing interest in the vital role our local employers play in delivering high quality apprenticeship schemes. My visits have included the Filton campus of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) where I met with the CEO & Executive Principal, Kevin Hamblin and Principal Sara-Jane Watkins - and was very pleased to learn of the success of their apprenticeship training programmes. I also visited Rolls-Royce in Filton during the second week of April. It was good to catch up with members of the team and to meet some of the young engineers who were full of energy and enthusiasm. I was able to see some of the new projects they

were working on which were inspirational! Armed Forces Day 2022: The national AFD date this year is June 25th and I understand from South Gloucestershire Council that a flag raising has been scheduled for June 20th, but no other local events have been confirmed for the area specifically. In light of this, and along with local councillors and representatives of the RBL, I am leading local efforts to ensure that a South Gloucestershire AFD event will take place this year to ensure that the day is given its due recognition and we honour our veterans and pay tribute to our serving Armed Forces. As always, should you need my help with anything, my office is open from Monday to Friday 9am-6pm. Please telephone me on 01454 617783 or email me at: jack.lopresti.mp@parliament.uk if I can be of assistance.

'We could be forced to build 9,000 extra homes' by BBC LDRS staff for Filtonvoice South Gloucestershire could be forced to take 9,000 more homes over the next two decades than the Government thinks it should, its council leader fears. Conservative Cllr Toby Savage revealed at a council meeting that an initial version of the region’s housing blueprint indicated 37,000 homes would be earmarked in the district – almost a third more than the 28,000 that Whitehall calculations suggest are necessary, he said. Cllr Savage told the council’s cabinet: “I cannot in all good conscience agree to land our communities with unsustainable levels of new growth over the next 20 years.” He criticised Labour metro mayor Dan Norris, who as head of the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) is required to publish the spatial development

strategy (SDS), a strategic vision setting out overall numbers and

broad distribution of housing, jobs, infrastructure and growth. Cllr Savage said Mr Norris was “resistant” to meetings over the SDS and, as a result, the document and 12-week public consultation had been delayed, while cabinet members suggested this may have also been caused by a “toxic working environment” at Weca that had led to an “exodus” of top officers. Asked to respond, the metro mayor said afterwards it was the Government who had set the housing numbers and was demanding at least 105,000 new homes in the West of England over the next two decades. He said South Gloucestershire Tories wanted to “walk away” from their own Government’s targets while blaming everyone but them and that the public would not be fooled. Cllr Savage has previously criticised Mr Norris for a

“mushroom farming approach” to preparing the SDS in “darkness and secrecy”, while the Weca mayor has accused the council leader of “living in a parallel universe” and having “delusions of grandeur”. In the latest war of words, Cllr Savage told his cabinet on Monday (April 4): “It’s disappointing we are in a position where the decision on pushing on with an SDS has needed to be deferred because of a lack of preparedness and engagement that is a true reflection of the words ‘engagement’ and ‘collaboration’ across the region, but this is where we find ourselves. “Delivering a comprehensive and robust plan for the future of the region is a fundamental function of the combined authority and we as a council have shown nothing but willingness to work alongside

Weca to ensure its success. “The Weca mayor has been resistant to meetings of mayors and leaders to discuss the SDS. “He had other priorities – something we have continued to push back on as leaders in Bath & North East Somerset Council and the mayor of Bristol, working together on that cross-party basis because we want to ensure that maximum engagement. “While I’m happy we have now had a grand total of two meetings on this topic – two more than we’ve had in the last six months – it has ended up being too little, too late to meet the original timescale for the SDS. “Having seen the plans that have been put forward by Weca – the 37,000 housing requirement for South Gloucestershire which would see almost 10,000 more homes in South Gloucestershire than the Government’s ‘standard methodology’ indicates – I can say without a doubt that I am not supportive.

unsustainable levels of new growth over the next 20 years.” Cabinet member for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure Cllr Steve Reade said: “The administration has grave concerns about the proposals coming forward and the likelihood that it would not progress past examination. “This includes an unacceptable target for South Gloucestershire and unsustainable housing numbers being allocated to communities already besieged by speculative housing developments. “The longer the mayor continues to press on without meaningful engagement, the higher the chance that this strategy will fail.” Cabinet member for corporate resources Cllr Ben Burton said: “If they are indeed delaying due to the need for gathering more evidence, I can hardly say I’m surprised due to the exodus of senior officers from Weca, including the directors of finance,

legal and infrastructure, as well as the interim for the latter. “I’m not sure if this has been down to a toxic working environment or not but I do have serious concerns that they are not equipped to handle the task before them.” Mr Norris said afterwards he would not be drawn into an internal fight between local and national Tories over housing numbers. He said: “It is the Conservative Government that has demanded the West of England must build a minimum of 105,000 new homes over the next 20 years. "It is the Government that has set exacting rules for this complex and highly expensive process. “South Gloucestershire Tory councillors should be wary of taking the public for fools. If they want to walk away from their own Government’s high housing numbers, they should simply say so.”

Hospice is bowled over by cricket club support Bohemians CC is delighted to announce that they’ve partnered with St Peter’s Hospice again for the 2022 season. The Filton club have been long-term supporters of the Hospice but last year went one step further with their support by using the St Peter’s Hospice logo on their playing shirts. A percentage of all shirt sales was given to the charity and various other fundraising activities including 10ks, Jenka nights, and fines from “poor” performances which raised just over £1,400. This year they have agreed to continue the partnership, and they are going to try and beat the previous total. Steve Lewis, club chairman said: “Given the last 24 months have been difficult for lots of charities, we wanted to give thanks to the great work St Peter’s Hospice has done in the

community over the years and support them in this way. "We had tremendous feedback from people after seeing the logo on our shirts and commenting on how the Hospice had helped them in times of need. It was an easy decision to continue to try to do our bit. St Peter’s Hospice cares for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families, serving Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and parts of Bath and North East Somerset. The Hospice provide most of their support in the community in patient’s homes but also have an Inpatient Unit in Brentry. All the Hospice's services are provided free of charge with most of the funding coming through their shops, fundraising events and donations. Community fundraiser, Sophie Cullinane, said: “It’s wonderful to have the

n MESSAGE FROM SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL

Help for groups that support our communities SUPPORTING the diverse array of community groups across South Gloucestershire is important to the Council, given the vital services and opportunities they provide to local residents. Many of these groups, despite facing their own challenges, were indispensable in supporting our communities through the toughest times of the pandemic, and I’m pleased there are a number of ways the council is able to continue supporting them. Our Area Wide Grants help us support community organisations that are working for residents across South Gloucestershire, with the latest round having just opened for applications. A total of £70,000 is available this year and groups, as well as town and parish councils, have

until midnight on May 9 to apply. The maximum grant amount available for each recipient is £3,000, although we do have some flexibility for higher awards to be made in exceptional circumstances and subject to budget availability. The type of initiatives that could be eligible include projects that reduce isolation and exclusion, events that bring communities together, activities that promote health and well-being or services that address a particular community need. If you are a voluntary, community and social enterprise organisation or a town and parish council with community projects, services, events or activities that will benefit residents in at least six of the 14 Community Engage-

ment Forum areas, I strongly urge you to apply. We greatly value what you do and are there to support you. Find out more and how to register and apply on our website www.southglos.gov.uk/AWG. In addition, our Member Awarded Funding is also available. Local voluntary community groups, social enterprise organisations and town and parish councils can apply to South Gloucestershire councillors for funding for their local projects, events and services. Member Awarded Funding can also be used to support Mutual Aid Groups, helping residents throughout the pandemic. n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Turning green words into green deeds

ONE of my favourite metaphors is that good politicians are ones able to make the weather. Sadly, this has acquired a literal sense as the deadly extent of the climate and ecological emergency has become clear. As Metro Mayor of the West of England, I’m constantly in awe of the fact that the people of our great region are more aware and determined to protect the planet than anywhere else in the country. The public are certainly way ahead of our politicians. Very many local people tell me that tackling global warming is a huge issue for them. But while the current government has some constructive words for our planet, in truth, a desperate situation is not improving anywhere near quickly enough. Great British species, including the red squirrel and hedgehogs, have been and are in worrying decline. Shamefully, our natural water sources – rivers, lakes, coastal and groundwater – are among Europe’s most polluted. In fact, some of our leading environment and conservation

organisations say we are now “among the most nature-depleted countries in the world”. Under my leadership, the West of England Combined Authority is getting on with the deadly serious business of fighting the climate crisis head on. I was delighted that the West of England’s brand-new climate action plan was voted through in April, as well as £10.4 million of new cash to get down to work on meeting our region’s necessarily ambitious net-zero targets. This includes making homes warmer through a retrofitting programme and kickstarting an electric vehicle revolution, both crucial to cutting today’s sky-high energy and fuel bills. These are steps we can all get behind, wherever we live in our region – from our most rural of communities to our impressive market towns and the great cities of Bristol and Bath. Together we can overcome the climate and ecological crisis. But as Metro Mayor I’m not able to do everything necessary and quickly enough.

Metro Mayor

Dan Norris

writes for the Voice It will also require a massive input from national government if we are to succeed. I am therefore, irrespective of our different political colours, keen to work with government, or indeed, anyone else, to achieve net zero as quickly as possible and rebuild our regional wildlife and plants. As we know, words are easy. It is action that is now required. Let’s work together to tackle the climate emergency and protect our brilliant part of the world – before it is too late. Let’s make the weather together.

Filton Chest & Heart would like to thank St Andrew's Methodist Church for letting us hold our very successful Easter Fair there on Monday 11th April. We had a range of items from handmade items to potted plants, secondhand books and Easter Cards on sale, along with a bottle stall, Easter Tree competition and Raffle. For the children we put together Easter kits for them to make up, not forgetting lots of chocolate prizes. It was well supported and we made a wonderful £400 to go towards medical equipment for Conygre Road surgery or

Southmead Hospital. Back in February we were very pleased to support the Respiratory Unit with a donation of £2142 to pay for the purchase of Sleep Study Equipment which is an ongoing project for Covid patients. Filton Chest & Heart is a charity open to adults who have either a heart or lung complaint. We meet each month for activities such as talks, lunches or coffee mornings and welcome new members. Please contact Brian Smith on 0117 975 9126 for details. Clare Hayward

‘I went from taking 30 tablets a day to feeling better at 60 than I did at 50. My life has completely transformed’ One award-winning proven process is transforming the lives of thousands of people around Bristol, including Shaun. There’s a lot of scepticism around chiropractic, who needs it and whether it actually works. Whilst there are statistics out there, there are also a lot of myths and common misconceptions surrounding the industry. So, what is out there that you can believe and rely upon? Interviews with real people who have been in the same position that you are now. Shaun, who visited Willow Chiropractic, shared his journey. “One day I woke up to go about my day as I usually would and before I knew it, I had collapsed. I had to crawl into the car and lay across the backseat for my wife to drive me to hospital. A few weeks beforehand, I had felt a few twinges in my back, but I just took painkillers and got on with life. I had never experienced anything like this before; the pain was excruciating and I had pins and needles all down my legs. I couldn’t dress myself, walk, drive, the list goes on. I began to wonder whether I would ever be able to walk again. I was taking 30 tablets a day ranging from Naproxen and Co-Codamol to Omeprazole and Gabapentin.

Eventually, my wife drove me to Willow and I was amazed. After the first session I was able to stand by myself and almost able to walk by myself too! As time went on, my back got better and the pins and needles started to go away. I started to walk normally and with greater ease, and I could even drive myself to the clinic. Fast forward to today and my sleeping pattern is better, and I have so much more energy now than I’ve had in years. Overall, my health has improved. I feel better coming up to 60 than I did when I was 50. I can garden for longer, I enjoy cycling and walking the dog. I choose to continue with my chiropractic care every three weeks. For me, it’s all about my well-being, keeping active and preserving myself for the future. Chiropractic care is a proven process that can help with your pain and wellbeing, now and in the long-term. Willow Chiropractic can not only help to get you out of pain and back to doing what you love, but also act as an invaluable tool to prevent problems from developing in the future. Everyone’s journey with chiropractic

is different, and everyone will make progress at different speeds, so be patient. Bodies heal differently, you should never compare your progress with someone else’s. You will achieve your health goals, you just have to trust in your body to heal in its own time.” If you’re ready to start living your life to the full again, in conjunction with the The Week In, Willow Chiropractic is offering a discounted consultation where they will carry out a full examination and tell you exactly what they find. There is no obligation, all for £10. So, whether you have been suffering with pain for a while, or you want to take back control of your life and health, call 0117 463 7075 today to start your journey to a happier and healthier you.
