A break-in was carried out at St. Peter’s Church in Filton on July 12, with a raffle cash prizeRevdtaken.Lizzie Gregory said such crime is rare but fortunately the thieves did not escape with much of value. She said: “The church warden was passing and realised something was not right and noticed that the panel part of a door had been kicked in. The thieves managed to take a cash prize (for a raffle), but nothing else other than some brass brackets (of low value).

“We have had problems with youngsters trying to climb on to the roof and throwing stones at the church, and at passing cars. It is not often a church is targeted. It is sad that so much damage has been caused for the sake of £50. If people are in that much need, please just come and talk to us.”

In a separate incident, an overnight disturbance locally led to police searching the church grounds, possibly for a knife according to witnesses.

Filton town councillors have rejected claims that additional works and rising costs will have a significant impact on the proposed redevelopment of the leisure centre at Elm Park. The council has now signed final contracts with provider Active Nation, with management of the site outsourced to the leisure charity. Final planning permission has also been given by South Glos Council. Staff are now employed by Active Nation. The funding for the redevelopment is coming from a public works loan of around £4.5million taken out by the council with repayments being made from revenue made by Active Nation. Former councillor Ian Scott said on social media that he was concerned the council was 'making major decisions behind closed doors', citing commercial sensitivity as the reason. He said on the Filtonvoice run Filton News and Views group: "It has always been a challenge to keep the swimming pool open because swimming pools are so expensive to run but we have always been transparent in our decision making. "This is important because

Town Councils are not secret societies and if you are using council tax payers money they deserve to know the financial implications in advance of decisions being made to enable them to submit their views before a decision is made. "The public work loan is not a commercially sensitive matter but is a matter of public interest." Cllr Scott resigned on May 20 after a meeting which discussed the leisure centre was held behind closed doors. However subsequent meetings have covered leisure centre finance in open session. At the July finance meeting, Cllr Andy Robinson said he was concerned that a decision was taken to approve possible extra drainage works without waiting to find out the cost, which he said could be up to £400,000. According to figures seen by Filtonvoice, the Council will be making savings of around £270k per year over the life of the contract, with costs of £16,000 annually (including financing of capital). Previously it was costing the council around £300k per year to run it. Chair of Finance Alex Doyle also said all procedures for public consultation and meetings had been carried out properly. Cllr Chris Wood said the plans represented significant savings for taxpayers and without it the centre would either close or council tax would rise. The council will be running an open public meeting for residents to view plans and ask questions, on a date to be confirmed. given: to Pages 16 and 17

Vision for future of Bristol Parkway station

A consultation is under way inviting views on the future of Bristol Parkway Rail Station. The station marked its 50th anniversary this year and a masterplan shows a vision for a 'living station' which would have much more than just a stopping point for trains. This would include employment space, restaurants, community facilities and park areas as well as being a hub for sustainable transport growth such as bikes and buses. South Glos Council's plan would move the site away from the idea of a park and ride, part of the original vision 50 years ago.The masterplan says: "The redevelopment of Bristol Parkway offers an opportunity to create a true gateway to north

The new site would have four new 'places':

• The Brickworks: Located on the site of a former brickworks, it would be home to new employers.Theplans also say: "This idea of a ‘living station’ is proposed for Bristol Parkway, where in the future you could access daily needs and wants such as workspace, cafes and restaurants to creche facilities, gyms and places to live."

The consultation invites people to give their view until August 14. It can be found at consultationHomeParkway_Station_Masterplan/consultations.southglos.gov.uk/https://

Bristol and its communities. There is now an opportunity to design a station for the 21st century, that empowers the community to travel through sustainable, flexible, and healthy means of transport, that clearly prioritise public transport and active and shared travel over private car use. Two key green spaces are proposed, St Michael’s Green to the west, and a new community/habitat park in the centre of the plan. "The station will be located alongside a new bus interchange, ample cycle parking, vehicle access and connected into surrounding neighbourhoods by new walking and cycling routes, to ensure that sustainable transport is the most attractive way of travelling locally."

spokesperson said: "Honeytree Bristol Day Nursery have launched into an intensive development plan to ensure a swift and robust set of improvements. "Ofsted is satisfied with the actions Honeytree Bristol have taken so far and can see the progress that the team has already been able to demonstrate."Toensure an unwavering approach to the improvements, there has been a change in management at the nursery who are committed to ensuring the quality of care and education is consistently at a level that the nursery can be proud of.

"Although staff create an attractive environment to motivate children to explore, the managers and staff do not plan a curriculum that builds on children's knowledge and skills.

Nursery in pledge to improve after Ofsted criticism

A nursery and preschool on the border of Filton and Horfield has been judged 'inadequate' after a visit by Ofsted, the body which inspects schools and nurseries in England.Leaders of Honeytree Bristol Day Nursery & Preschool, sited in the grounds of Orchard School Bristol on Filton Road, were told children do not make good progress in learning. Storal Learning, which runs the nursery, has told Filtonvoice an 'intensive development plan is in place to ensure 'swift improvements'.Theinspection, which took place in May, discovered: "New and unsettled children are not supported consistently to build secure emotional bonds with their key persons. Key staff do not know each new child's care routines and how to support them.

"Staff do not know each child well and they do not find out enough about children's learning and development when they first start."There was also criticism that children's behaviour is sometimes allowed to deteriorate due to a failure of staff to engage in activities.AStoralLearning

"In the brief time since the report was published, parents have already said communication has been improved and they speak positively of the staff and the relationships between the nursery staff and families are lovely to observe.

Last year Opoka supported 509 women on a long-term basis and responded to 12,836 short-term enquiries.Thiswouldn’t be possible without a continuous support of our funders and the amazing local and national communities. As explained by Aneta Mackell, Opoka’s founder: ”We are so proud to say that Opoka is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. "This is such a significant milestone for us. We are organising a big fundraising gala on 17th September 2022 to celebrate achievements of our clients, volunteers, employees, and anybody who supported us for the pastFundsdecade.”raised on the night will go to opening a Safe House for women and their children who experienced domestic violence and abuse. Safe spaces for survivors fleeing domestic abuse are needed now more than ever. During the pandemic, domestic violence refuges saw a drastic increase in referrals, and it is estimated that in the years 2019 and 2020, 57% of referrals to safe houses were rejected due to lack of spaces.“Wereally want to make a difference and create a home where women will find peace and will be able to start a new chapter in their lives, free of violence. The journey to recovery is a process and can take a long time but we believe that in the right, supportive environment anyone can heal from the effects of the past trauma. “ “We are very excited to announce our two special guests: Kasia Madera – Opoka’s Patron and BBC World News Presenter and Ryan Hart. Ryan and his brother Luke Hart lost their mother at the hands of their father. "Since that moment they are speaking out against male violence towards women and children. We are so honoured to be able to welcome both of our guests during the event. "During“ the gala there will be awards ceremony, charity auction and lottery and entertainment throughout, all set out in a stunning Bristol Harbour Hotel. “The tickets are on sale now and they are limited, so we encourage everybody who is interested in attending to purchase theirs! Filton NEW CONSULTANT

Doug Claringbold told a council meeting that the Government’s Covid funding, which has kept many routes going throughout the pandemic, ends in October and a huge review of the network is taking place ahead of the “cliff-edge”. The company’s regional managing director said passengers needed to know buses would turn up. However, South Gloucestershire Council scrutiny commission also heard that while some passengers would suffer in the short term, innovative ways of taking people where they needed to go were in the pipeline. These include demand responsive transport where services are run on request, like taxis, multi-operator tickets, and minibuses replacing double deckers in rural areas.

The A4174 ring road will have partial closures (off peak 9.30am until 3pm) for litter picking, mowing and gully clearing for about five weeks. The work begins at Hicks Gate, moving round in stages to Filton. A StreetCare spokesperson said: "There will be lane closures on different sections of both sides of the carriageway which will cause disruption and South Gloucestershire StreetCare apologise for this. "However the closures are the only way to keep our five clean-up and cutting teams safe. "Please do not throw rubbish from your vehicles along the ring road or any road."

I’M so excited that the Summer Reading Challenge is back this year. My daughter and I enjoy spending time together with books, and I’m very proud that our libraries are taking such an active role in encouraging primary school-aged children to take part and hopefully develop a lifelong love of books. Running for the past 23 years, with a different theme each year, the Summer Reading Challenge reaches over 700,000 children across the UK. This year the challenge is called The Gadgeteers. Libraries and organisers, The Reading Agency, have partnered with the Science Museum Group for a science and innovation-themed challenge, to spark children’s cu riosity about the world around them and celebrate how the imagination plays an important role in reading and the sciences.

The challenge is a great way to support literacy over the school holidays, when it can sometimes dip. Why not read a book for a while, if you need a break from the (hopefully) warm sun?It supports children to be come more independent read ers, maintaining and improving confidence over the summer break, which they can take back to school in September. It also supports positive mental well-being, boosting self-esteem.HereinSouth Glouces tershire, the challenge is the perfect opportunity for families to explore our local libraries, especially as all Reception and Year 1 pupils have now received their own library card, as part of an initiative in this year’s budget designed to improve literacy and help children develop a lifelong love of reading. The challenge runs until September 10 and is completely free, which we know is impor tant at a time when families are struggling with rising costs. It’s also very easy to join. Children simply sign up at one of our local libraries, read six books over the summer holidays and receive stickers to complete a special collector’s poster. There are also lots of incentives to encourage young readers to participate, such as free swim vouchers – and brilliant books. So, why not pop in to one of our libraries to find out more, sign up, and borrow your first book? You can also find out more at merreadingchallenge.www.southglos.gov.uk/sum

Protect yourself against cyber fraud

AS I’ve mentioned before, I am the national police and crime commissioner lead for economic and cybercrime and, along with my team, I continue to work with Avon and Somerset Police and partners to raise awareness of the signs of fraud and prevent local people from becoming victims in the first place. As part of this work, we have distributed fraud protection postcards to over 160,000 households across 60 postcodes in Avon and Somerset. You can find this postcard in this edition of the Voice,, for you to cut out and keep beside your phone, pin on your fridge or by your front door. I want local people to use this postcard, so if and when a scammer contacts you, you know how to spot the signs of fraud and protect yourself. The postcard is also available on my website to download and print. Moving on, I’m delighted to tell you about the fantastic results of the latest Operation Scorpion, the regional crackdown on drugs. Colleagues across the South West region carried out operations to disrupt drug supply and prevent drug crime, alongside carrying out preventative, educational and engagement work within communities.InAvonand Somerset there were almost 700 acts of disruption, including 17 arrests for drugrelated offences, 12 warrants in relation to properties and people linked to drug supply, two county lines disrupted, thousands of pounds worth of class A drugs and cannabis seized and 147 visits or safeguarding checks to addresses of vulnerable people. These results are sending a strong message to both criminals and our communities that we are intent on making the South West no place for drugs. The first priority in my police and crime plan is preventing and fighting crime, and not only does this include important enforcement activity but also education work, to make our communities a safer place. Finally, local businesses can now access Police CyberAlarm, a free tool designed to help organisations understand and monitor the threat they face from malicious cyber activity.Police CyberAlarm, which is government funded, acts like a CCTV camera and monitors the traffic seen by business connections to the internet. The tool will show local businesses how they are being attacked, the source of the attack and will also help law enforcement identify current threats to take action against cyber criminals.Police CyberAlarm can benefit any business with a computer network, including SMEs, not for profit organisations, public and private sector, charities, education establishments and local government. This past month there has been a buzz around Westminster, in no small part, a result of the resignation of the Prime Minister, subsequent leadership race and media excitement surrounding these events. To address this, I would like to make the following statement: Boris Johnson's place in history is assured. He led our great country out of the EU to freedom, steered us through a terrible global pandemic and demonstrated to the world his fantastic leadership in support of the Ukrainian people in their fight for liberty. I would therefore like to thank the Prime Minister for his service.

Got a story other inquiry?

Filton MP Jack Lopresti

The next Prime Minister and leader of our party has to unite the party and the country and be able to deal with the many challenges we have both here and abroad. They then have to move our party forward and win us the next election to save our country from the calamity of a Labour, Kier Starmer-led coalition of chaos. In other news, to address the rising cost of living and inflationary pressures on household budgets the National Insurance threshold rise came into effect on the 6th of July, this tax cut will bring NI thresholds up from £9,880 to £12,570, representing the largest tax cut in a decade, saving 30 million British workers £330 a year in a measure worth £6 billion to provide support to our people.

I am also delighted that I was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party on the 9th of July, I’m looking forward to working with the new Party Chairman Andrew Stephenson and the team at CCHQ. I also chaired a session of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sovereign Defence Manufacturing Capability with Make UK – The Manufacturer’s Organisation, the leading voice of the UK manufacturing sector in which we discussed the challenges and opportunities in this vitally important sector and how we can support SMEs to win more business with the MOD. Further, to represent the aerospace jobs in our constituency I attended a Parliamentary reception for the UK space sector, sponsored by Airbus which showcased many of the SMEs involved in the UK’s exciting and expanding space technology sector. I also held my regular surgery for local residents. I often hold these in community hubs across our area. Most recently, this was held at my Bradley Stoke office where I met a number of residents who had requested a meeting with me to discuss their concerns and situations. As always, should you need my help with anything, my office is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm. Please telephone me on 01454 617783 or email me at: jack.lopresti. mp@parliament.uk if I or to book a surgery.

THERE’S no place like home when it comes to our summer holidays, for the staycation is back. With the ever-growing cost of living, not to mention the chaos at the Passport Office wrecking even the best-laid holiday plans, many are choosing to play it safe this year and sit out their summer getaway here in the UK. After two years of ‘stay at home’ orders and jumping around the living room with fitness guru Joe Wicks, who fully knew that the solitude of the West of England could help recharge all ourWhobatteries?realised that we could all feel rein vigorated by strolling through the gorgeous hills of the South West countryside – a walker’s paradise – from which you can see for miles? And who appreciated that from adventure parks to nature parks, from festivals to sporting activities, all the family can have a healthy dose of wholesome fun right here in our amazing region? The secret is now well and truly out. From play and learning at family-friendly favourites like Wild Place Project to the hidden gem that is Radstock Museum, our area is jam-packed with top places to explore. That’s why, this year, I’ve encouraged all of you to make the most of our fantastic local attractions and get behind them as our pan demic-hit tourism sector gets back on its feet. My Explore Local campaign has already helped bring thousands of tourists back to our great region, but there is a way to go yet. And so, if this to be the summer of the great British ‘staycation’ - this a phrase that’s bandied about every year, but it’s fair to say that it’s nev er been more fitting – let’s take full advantage by visiting the truly amazing attractions we have locally. The UK may well be the staycation nation, but there is no better staycation destina tion than the West of England! This summer I’ve been busy visiting many of our great attractions. There are too many highlights to mention but some deserve a special shout out. In Bath I immersed myself in the spooky history of how Mary Shelley penned her best selling Frankenstein novel in the city. I should warn you, this one ain’t for the faint-hearted –so children will love it! I got a sneak peek of a brand-new (and free!) outdoor photography gallery from Bristol’s Roy al Photographic Society, too. And I’ve enjoyed tea rooms and character in abundance in our beautiful historic market towns. We’re lucky to live in such a brilliant part of the world. While an exotic escape may be off the cards this year, have no fear. Let’s all get out there, soak in the atmos phere (and sun) and enjoy a staycation like no other. We should all fall back in love with holiday ing at home here in the very special West of England. And a big bonus of keeping it local and travelling less far is that we can help save the planet too. I hope you have a great holiday. News 'A vehicle charging point within a mile

August, 2022 filtonvoiceE:

People in Filton hoping to make the switch to an electric vehicle (EV) will find it easier in the future thanks to work being carried out by South Gloucestershire Council. The council has launched a 12-week consultation on a new strategy looking at where EV charging points could be installed in the area to help support those making the switch to EVs. As part of the Climate Emergency the council has pledged to lead South Gloucestershire to become carbon neutral by 2030. This commitment includes reducing car use in favour of walking and cycling and public transport. However, for those journeys that need to be made by car the council is encouraging the use of the number of publicly available charge points will support those making the switch. EV ownership is already growing significantly and by 2030 it is expected that 30 per cent of cars on the road will be EVs. The council’s goal is for the majority of households in South Gloucestershire to be within one mile of EV charge points.

The new EV Charging Strategy looks to complement the growth in EV charging provision in the private sector by filling the gaps, especially in more rural communities. Councillor Steve Reade, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “As a council we are committed to encouraging more people to make the switch to sustainable travel options such as walking, cycling or public transport. We understand though that some journeys need to be made by car and that is why we have launched a new EV Charging Strategy for South Gloucestershire. We want to support those who are making the switch to an EV and encourage more to consider an EV for their next vehicle. “By improving and increasing the EV charging network across the area we are making owning an EV a more realistic option.”

The consultation closes on Monday 3 October 2022. During the consultation pop-up information events will be held around South Gloucestershire. A full list of locations and dates are available on the consultation webpage. of everyone' at visiting

“Some concerns have recorded the knock-on effect to patient safety of issues of worker safety/bullying and harassment.”

NBT chairwoman Michele Romaine said: “Nobody around this table believes that is acceptable and it’s absolutely why Freedom To Speak Up and many other initiatives in the organisation absolutely have full support because you’re right, we need to live in a world where 100 per cent of people need to say what’s concerning them.

“We are in the process, we are not there yet.“Why as an organisation would we not want to be a place where people felt safe to say what they needed to say to us? “It’s a no-brainer, so this is all part of our journey towards being that organisation. “I like the fact that more people are coming forward. It means they feel more confident.”Only64 per cent of staff said they felt “safe to speak up about anything that concerns me in this organisation”, the board wasLeadtold.FTSU guardian Hilary Sawyer said: “Concerns have been raised across all divisions in increasing numbers and we believe this reflects more awareness and trust in the Freedom To Speak Up mechanism.“Concerns have been regarding a range of issues. However, levels have been highest relating to behaviours and relationships and some knock-on to some patient concerns as well.“Themes of concerns correlate to themes raised by our trade union colleagues.

“These are around staffing levels and concerns of patient care and staff wellbeing, behavioural issues and relationships with colleagues or managers, fairness and treatment, parking issues relating to retention and staff safety, and some employment issues. “Staff continue to reflect some fatigue from ongoing pressures from increased activity and staffing level challenges. “We need to continue to create the right conditions to enable and invite confident, curious and open dialogue, inclusion and contribution.“Thestaff survey suggests we have some way to go in staff feeling safe to speak up about anything of concern and have that followed up,” she told the meeting.

A report to the board said more concerns were being lodged as the scheme was gathering momentum, most about employee safety, including staffing levels, followed by “bullying and harassment”. “Taken together this indicates that the vast number of concerns relate to behaviours and relationships,” it said.

Non-executive board member Ike Anya told the meeting: “I was glad to see the progress being made but I couldn’t help looking again and again at the 74 per cent who would feel secure raising concerns about unsafe clinical practice, which means 26 per cent – one quarter – of our staff do not feel secure in raising concerns. “That is very concerning. What that says is that they do not feel comfortable, even without witnessing something.”

NBT board members called the findings “very concerning” and pledged to step up the trust’s Freedom To Speak Up (FTSU) initiative, which encourages workers to flag issues and bosses to listen and take action.

by BBC LDRS staff for Filtonvoice Over a quarter of staff at Southmead Hospital’s health trust do not feel comfortable raising concerns about “unsafe clinical practice”, a report has revealed. Less than two-thirds of North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) employees feel “safe” to speak up about anything while only half are confident that the organisation would do something about it.
