Labour dominant as Alex takes vacancy on council
Aerospace worker Alex Doyle is Filton’s latest town councillor after he fought off the challenge of retired BAE transport manager David Baverstock for the vacancy. All five Labour councillors present voted for Mr Doyle while the remaining Conservative and UKIP councillors voted for Mr Baverstock. Chairman Darryl Collins did not vote. The council had advertised the post after there had been no petition by residents for a by-election in the wake of the resignation of Conservative councillor Maria Silveira. Former Bristol University student Mr Doyle, 28, is a member of the Labour Party which means the council in now heavily Labour dominated. There are now seven Labour

councillors, two Conservative, two UKIP and Independent Bill Moore. Mr Doyle said in his presentation that he believed it was vital Filton kept its facilities, especially recreational, which was vital to combat rises in obesity levels. He also pledged to protect green spaces and said he wanted the council to engage more with local people. He said he brought a range of experiences and insight into life in the Bristol area. Mr Baverstock, 64, was a Filton Hill Primary governor for eight years (five as chair) and he said he had a varied knowledge of Filton. He said that he understood how budgets worked and that he would have been adaptable to most tasks.
