Methodist church to become community facility St Andrew’s Methodist Church is set to become a multi-use community facility.

Part of the building will be sold to counselling organisation Network Counselling, which previously was set to take over Conygre House in Filton.

It is understood the transformation will be complete within 12 months and an Open Day has been organised to show local people what to expect. The Open Day will be held on Saturday, October 8. Full details in next month’s issue.

Methodist church to become hub of the community

Steep rise in Labour membership in Filton ahead of leadership poll

by Rebecca Day Labour membership in Filton has increased by more than 50 per cent, Filtonvoice can reveal.

It has beeen confirmed by local branch secretary Roger Hutchinson that numbers have risen from 70 to 109.

One Labour member has said local meetings have been suspended The news has come in the wake of the Labour leadership contest between party leader Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith, and reflects the increase in party members across the country.

Darryl Collins, Labour Filton Town Council chairman, pictured, said: “The national press tell us our membership has rocketed, and if true then in my opinion it is without any shadow of doubt, a direct result of Jeremy Corbyn’s influence.

Volunteer needed to keep lunch club open Organisers of a lunch club for elderly residents that has been running for 21 years are appealing for a new volunteer to ensure their Monday session doesn’t close.

St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Elm Park runs the Pop In Lunch Club on Mondays and Wednesdays, providing a twocourse meal with tea and coffee for up 30 people each session.

The volunteer who leads the cooking for the Monday club is now in her 80s and will be retiring at the end of August, and

organisers need to find someone to replace her from September 5 to ensure the session can continue. The role could also be shared by two people who would volunteer on alternate weeks.

The club is also looking for more volunteers who could help with food preparation, laying tables, washing up and more.

Filton GP practice: we’ve made big strides since patient survey A local doctors’ surgery has responded robustly to a survey which ranked the practice as one of the lowest in South Gloucestershire.

The GP Patient Survey, conducted on behalf of NHS England, revealed that 71 per cent of Stoke Gifford and Conygre Medical Centre’s patients deemed their experience “good” with 68 per cent saying that they would recommend the surgery.

Patients of the Concord Medical Centre, which until 2013 had a surgery in Filton, and Northville Family Practice on Filton Avenue were also surveyed. Ninety per cent of their patients felt that they had a good experience, and 84 per cent (Concord) and 78 per cent (Northville) said that they would recommend the surgeries.

Out of the 243 surveys which were posted out to patients of Stoke Gifford/Conygre, 102 responded. Ninety per cent felt that they had confidence and trust in the last GP they saw. However, only 16 per cent said that they get to see their preferred GP. Other areas identified as needing improvement included making appointments and telephone access, which under half of the patients surveyed felt were satisfactory.

A spokesperson from Stoke Gifford and Conygre Medical Centre has told Filtonvoice that

Gavin Richards, business manager at the practice, added that the data is also based on a low response rate, as less than 1% of their patients filled out the questionnaire.

Mr Richards says that over the last 10 months, the practice has been carrying out its own survey to gauge its patients’ experience.

Five-hundred patients have been surveyed, with 83 per cent saying that they would recommend the surgery.

He said: “We are disappointed

by our ranking in the recent GP survey - particularly when considering the dedication and commitment of all of our staff to the patients and the excellent feedback that we get.

“The surveys were conducted in mid 2015 and early 2016 and most of these responses seem to reflect experiences of the practice at a time prior to a number of improvements being made.”

Changes to the surgery have included upgrading and adding clinical space, including a lift at Conygre Road; recruiting reception staff and installing additional phone lines to meet the demand at peak times; increasing the number of GP partners; extending opening hours for people who work fulltime; adding e-consultations to their website for those that need advice but struggle to get away from work; tracking when appointments have not been given and following up with vulnerable patients; and introducing a minor injury walkin service.

Improving telephone access remains a priority for the surgery and it will be consulting with patients about this issue in the near future.

Mr Richards says that surgery is doing the best it can at a time where funding is being reduced, demand is increasing, and there is a shortage of GPs across the country.

Sue Packham said: “The biggest problem I have is actually making an appointment. I am at work when the reception opens in the morning and can’t use a phone at work. Even getting a non-urgent appointment in advance is difficult.”

get through on the phone I’ve always been impressed with everyone at both Filton and Conygre surgeries and I think the online service should alleviate the necessity for as many calls.

I definitely wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.”

Tina Phillips said: “Stoke Gifford and Conygre Road GPs are good. It’s just trying to get through on phone is a nightmare.”

Michèle Powell said: “Amazing Doctors, fantastic care and very helpful admin staff.”

Sarah Stacey said: “I’m getting increasingly frustrated with their appointment system.

They tell you to pre-book for anything non-urgent but there are rarely any suitable prebookables available (at Conygre), they always seem to want you to go to Stoke Gifford.”

Black bin to be reduced as council introduces waste system changes Filton residents will see their black ‘general waste’ bin reduced in size but still collected weekly as South Glos aims to save money and increase recycling.

The changes follow a consultation which the council says gave an endorsement to improving recycling.

But locally some people say the changes could lead to Filton becoming a ‘pigsty’ as the smaller black bins overflow.

The council has said larger families may still be entitled to the existing larger black bin and there will be a nappy collection service.

The Council’s Environment and Community Services Committee backed ‘ambitious’ new proposals for the waste service to help increase recycling levels and also brings back

a weekly bin collection. The committee agreed a new five-year waste strategy at the meeting on 6 July 2016 to increase recycling by 7,000 tonnes a year.

This aims to deliver a recycling rate of 55 per cent by 2020 and net savings for the council of between £800,000 and £1 million per annum.

It follows a 14-week public consultation on proposed changes to waste and recycling collections which attracted a total of 1,263 responses.

Between 83 and 90 per cent of those taking part agreed or strongly agreed with the the council’s key priorities of reducing waste and promoting recycling.

A report to the committee said South Gloucestershire generated more household waste

per person than either Bristol, Swindon or Bath and North East Somerset.

Under the new strategy: • Kerbside recycling collection will become weekly • Black bin collections will remain fortnightly • Standard household black bins will be reduced from 240 litres capacity to 140 Councillor Heather Goddard, Chair of the Environment and Community Services Committee, said: “Over half of the contents of the average black bin in South Gloucestershire could be recycled, cutting waste and saving taxpayers’ money.

Emm Gee My black bin is mostly packaging that can’t be recycled. It used to say on the leaflets that they couldn’t recycle cardboard if it had food in contact with it. eg a flan, so that cardboard box should be put in the black bin. Yes, food retailers should be encouraged to use less packaging.

Labour dominant as Alex takes vacancy on council

Aerospace worker Alex Doyle is Filton’s latest town councillor after he fought off the challenge of retired BAE transport manager David Baverstock for the vacancy.

All five Labour councillors present voted for Mr Doyle while the remaining Conservative and UKIP councillors voted for Mr Baverstock. Chairman Darryl Collins did not vote.

The council had advertised the post after there had been no petition by residents for a by-election in the wake of the resignation of Conservative councillor Maria Silveira.

Former Bristol University student Mr Doyle, 28, is a member of the Labour Party which means the council in now heavily Labour dominated.

councillors, two Conservative, two UKIP and Independent Bill Moore.

Mr Doyle said in his presentation that he believed it was vital Filton kept its facilities, especially recreational, which was vital to combat rises in obesity levels.

He also pledged to protect green spaces and said he wanted the council to engage more with local people. He said he brought a range of experiences and insight into life in the Bristol area.

Mr Baverstock, 64, was a Filton Hill Primary governor for eight years (five as chair) and he said he had a varied knowledge of Filton. He said that he understood how budgets worked and that he would have been adaptable to most tasks.

Concorde’s home is taking shape Concorde 216’s new home is rapidly taking shape in Filton, as work on the Aerospace Bristol project progresses.

The steelwork for the hangar, where the iconic aircraft will be the centrepiece of a wide range of exhibits telling the aircraft industry’s story, is already going up, ahead of the planned opening date in summer next year.

Designed, built and tested in Bristol, 216 was the final Concorde to be built and the last to fly. Since landing for the final time in 2003, Concorde 216 has been cared for by Airbus UK. Aerospace Bristol will feature learning spaces with specialist facilities for schools and youth groups and is working with industry partners to develop STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning programmes.

The £18.6 million project

has already secured significant support from corporate partners as well as a £4.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Now Aerospace Bristol is seeking more corporate sponsors to help secure the further £2m required.

National recognition for group’s work in supporting new community

A group’s work to give residents a say on how their new community should take shape has been recognised at a national awards ceremony.

The Southern Brooks Community Partnership’s Charlton Hayes steering group project earned a place as a finalist in the Planning and Placemaking Awards 2016.

The project enabled the Charlton Hayes community to work with a wide range of partners, including developers, police and fire services, schools, social housing associations, local authorities and churches.

The group‘s aim was to ensure that the interests of residents of Charlton Hayes were uppermost, and to enable clear and quick communications between the various partners to ensure that issues were

The project was entered in the Partnership Working category, reaching the final five and just missing out on the top spot.

A spokesperson said it was a great achievement considering it was the first time the partnership had entered the awards.

They added: “This way of working with various partners has now been recognised nationally which is very good for SBCP and validates how the organisation is forward-thinking in its partnership working in new communities.”

Filton has not seen an increase in hate crime since the vote to leave the European Union - despite reported upturns in other parts of Bristol and the UK. Filton town councillors at their monthly meeting were briefed by local beat officers who said they had not seen any rise in race-related incidents in July.

Officers also said intelligence received had led to the use of thermal imagery cameras to target homes being used to cultivate illegal drugs.

They also reported mopeds being driven at speed especially in Charborough ward and

officers have been using what is known as a Section 59 order which can lead to the moped being removed from the user with a charge levied if they want to get it back.

Officers said this had had an impact on reducing these type of incidents.

Celebration as hotel opens doors for business, creating 25 new jobs A budget hotel chain has opened its fifth Bristol branch in Filton, creating 25 new jobs.

The 90-room property, on Concorde Roundabout, part of the redevelopment of the former Filton airfield, represents a £7.5 million investment for Travelodge.

Councillor Darryl Collins, chairman of Filton Town Council, joined Travelodge revenue director Tom Edwards and Bristol Filton Travelodge hotel manager Jonus Yang to officially open the new hotel at an opening ceremony in July.

Mr Collins said: “It was good to officially open the new Filton Travelodge.

“The hotel is well situated to offer much-needed leisure facilities for local residents as well as bringing benefits to local businesses and supporting the night-time economy but also has

True Ironman Sean overcomes injury for race A director from Bristol firm Kellaway Building Supplies completed his first gruelling Ironman challenge – despite suffering serious injuries in a road collision just a few months ago.

Sean Morgan, who is the company’s operations and commercial director, tackled a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle ride and 26.2-mile marathon in an impressive 13 hours and 14 minutes during the event in Bolton and Lancashire in July.

The feat is made all the more remarkable by the fact that just weeks into his training in April, Sean was involved in a crash while out cycling.

He suffered serious facial and muscular injuries as well as needing plenty of stiches. After hospital care, huge support from his family and a brief break from work, Sean was able to return to training only a few weeks after the accident, even more determined to complete his goal in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

Sean, who is Kellaway’s charity ambassador, has surpassed his initial target of £3,000 for the charity, with the current figure standing at more than £4,400.

“The charity does amazing work and the care they provide is invaluable to people in their hour of need,” he said. “I am proud

to be able to support Children’s Hospice South West and I am delighted Kellaway have been able to get behind the charity and have completed some great fundraising and awareness events, with much more to come in the next few months.”

Children’s Hospice South West provides hospice care for children with life-limiting conditions and their whole family across the South West, from respite and short breaks to emergency care, palliative care and end-of-life support. They operate three hospices: Charlton Farm near Bristol; Little Bridge House in North Devon; and Little Harbour in mid Cornwall.

Volunteers jump for justice in a nine-hour bounce to raise funds

Volunteers reached new heights as part of a nine-hour sponsored bounce-a-thon at a Bristol trampoline park.

Mel Beckerleg, Jo Cordell and Beth John, all 23, organised the bounce-a-thon at Airhop, Cribbs Causeway, to support the work of charity Christian Aid to tackle global poverty and injustice.

In total, 26 people participated in the bounce and more than £500 has been raised already, with more to be collected in sponsorship.

Jo said: “It was great fun, if also tiring! We were really encouraged and amazed by the support we received, especially from Airhop staff, without whom none of this would have been possible. None of us had

Plans in place already for 2017 as Wurzels prove a big draw Filton Festival returned this year after it was not heald in 2015 and it looks like it’s here to stay.

A combination of The Wurzels, Pro Evolution Wrestling, 501st U.K. Garrison Star Wars characters (front page), music, circus characters, a fairground and also the annual community garden festival drew big crowds even though the weather was not great. The town council has confirmed the event broke even and already there is a date in the diary for 2017 provisionally Sunday, July 9.

Councillors heard that after cancelling the 2015 event due to budget constraints, the 2016 festival - with outdoor beer tent - broke even. At the recent full council meeting, councillors were told that many favourable comments had been received and council staff were praised for their hard work.

The Maid’s Version,

by Daniel Woodrell

Forty-two people die in an explosion at a dance-hall in the rural hamlet of West Table, Missouri, in 1929. No single explanation is ever found: rather, the investigation of the horror that befell this tiny backwoods town collapses into rumour, innuendo, score-settling and whispered suspicion.

Thirty-six years later, Alma DeGeer Dunahew, the illiterate maid of the title and the sister of one of the victims, recounts her fragmented version of the story to her grandson Alek.

Her story resembles nothing less than memory itself: wandering, coiling and switching back on itself, coloured by years of pain, poverty and hardship, shot through with the poison of wrongs long unredressed.

As Alma unfurls her story —

as braided and magnificent as her hair, which she has refused to cut since the day the explosion took her sister and maimed her community — Woodrell shows us beauty and terror, intercutting the main thrust of the narrative with brief vignettes that paint each victim vividly, as humans rather than mere characters; for all its darkness, this is a beautifully written book, filled with life.

Traditional crime fiction serves a comforting purpose: Bad things have happened, and we must look to a hero to vanquish them and restore the status quo.

Far less comforting, noir fiction looks at the status quo and suggests that perhaps injustice and inequality are products of the world in which we live and the people we

are, rather than occasional aberrations from somewhere outside. The Maid’s Version is a slice of deep-fried Country Noir, filled with shadows and things stirring in the depths of a sleepy little town.

A copy is available at Filton Library, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Following Great Britain’s historic Davis Cup win, the LTA has launched a Nationwide Trophy Tour.

Filton residents are encouraged to come along when the trophy will be visiting Coombe Dingle Sports Complex, Bristol on Thursday 18th August from 10am to 5pm and Avon LTA, in association with Bristol University and Bristol City Community Trust are holding a Multi Sports Festival at the venue.

The festival will offer FREE sporting activities during the day, including 5-A-side football, rugby, golf, tennis and handball amongst others. There will be the opportunity as well to have your photo taken with the Davis Cup Trophy.

College and engineering academy SGS College in Filton has teamed up with the nearby Bristol Technology & Engineering Academy (BTEA) to offer students an opportunity to pursue their passions in science, technology, engineering and maths while also developing their skills as an athlete, through the College’s Bristol Academy of Sport.

After a decade of developing sporting talent at SGS College, Bristol Academy of Sport will now support BTEA’s young, aspiring athletes from the age of 14 to reach their sporting potential.

Male and female students joining BTEA, which is situated next door to SGS, for the start of Year 10 will now have access to SGS College’s ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ education sports programme, including coaching, training and competition at the cutting edge WISE Campus.

BTEA students will also be provided with a free sports academy kit package worth £250, free access to the academy sports injury clinic and a guaranteed place on the Sports Academy at SGS College alongside their academic course when finishing their GCSEs. The GCSE programme will include, Maths, English, English Literature, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, Core PE, Computer Science, Engineering and Sports Science.

There are also additional GCSEs including Resistant Materials, Geography and Spanish. Sport options include football, rugby union, basketball or American football.

An Open Event was held in July where prospective students met staff, viewed the facilities and found out more about this offer.

Choir’s debut performance is met with chorus of approval at club The Airbus Filton Choir got off to a resounding start by giving their first performance to the Patchway Pensioners Club in North Patchway Hall on Friday, July 22, as part of Patchway International Festival, pictured above.

R-R team’s fundraising helps six charities who will share £4,000 Six charities have each received a share of nearly £4,000 thanks to the fundraising activities of colleagues at Rolls-Royce.

The company’s data services team raised a total of £3,900, donating £650 each to six nominated charities, which were: Greyhound Rescue West of England; Unseen UK; Jessie May Trust; Cots for Tots (The Grand Appeal); Cancer Research UK and Standards Against Female Exploitation (SAFE).

Representatives from each of the charities attended a cheque presentation on site in Filton.

John Redmond from SAFE, which tackles human trafficking and child sexual exploitation, said: “We are grateful to the data services team at Rolls-Royce for taking an interest in our charity and for this generous donation.

Senior business analyst Alexander Belassie presented the cheque to Mr Redmond, pictured, who then gave a talk about SAFE’s work and plans to raise greater awareness of grooming, exploitation and trafficking in schools.

SAFE also works with vulnerable children in care and with hotels to ensure their businesses cannot be misused by traffickers.

Paul Rugman, service delivery manager at Rolls-Royce, wrote to the charities after the presentation to thank them for their attendance.

He said: “It is great for colleagues to be able to hear first-hand about the fantastic work that you all do and how the money we raised will be put to good use.”

Bristol Male Voice Choir is looking for potential new recruits to come forward and add their tone to the popular singing group.

The choir is keen to encourage men from all over Bristol, whether tenor, bass or baritone, to come along to a regular Thursday rehearsal to find out more.

They perform not just male voice favourites, but a fascinating variety of songs – from modern musicals like Les Miserables to opera choruses, Beatles standards, gospel favourites, sea shanties, hymns, Elvis Presley and Josh Groban classics.

The choir began in Filton almost 50 years ago with many of its original members employed locally at British Aerospace and Rolls Royce.

It has grown in size and stature over the years, and now recruits Bristol-wide. A new musical director, Jo Scullin, was appointed last year, who has guided the choir through nine concerts, raising money for four different charities.

Concerts take place all over Bristol throughout the year, with the next one planned for August in Weston-super-Mare, and there have been tours in the past to Eastern Europe, the Carnegie Hall, New York and the Eden Project in Cornwall.

“There’s no problem if you don’t read music because rehearsals teach you every step of the way and there’s plenty of time before you go on stage for your first concert,” John added.

“Because we sing without copies, you have to learn the words and the music. That means that we are very responsive to our MD who teaches us and conducts us every step of the way.”

In John’s experience, new members who may have wondered if they could sing at all suddenly realise (after a short voice test to find out if they are natural baritones, basses, first or second tenors) that they can not only remember the words but find great camaraderie in rehearsals, good vibes in concerts and after concert gettogethers.

Bristol Male Voice Choir rehearses every Thursday from 7pm till 9.15 pm at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (formerly Filton College).

Abbey wood Community School Students at Abbeywood took learning out of the classroom between 11-15 July, enjoying a huge range of trips and activities to supplement their studies during the year.

Trips focussed on inspiring the interests and abilities of all students with just a few including Laser Tag, visit to Harry Potter Studios, surfing, photography, bike riding (above) and paintballing.

David Howe, Associate Headteacher, said: “Curriculum Enrichment week is an important and rewarding week during the school year as it is a chance for students to combine their academic knowledge with practical experiences, to challenge themselves outside of the classroom environment and to work alongside their peers in different year groups. Students have enhanced their learning whilst developing life skills, and had a great deal of fun along the way.”

Orchard School Bristol University students weren’t the only ones graduating this summer ...

Orchard School Bristol students had the chance to wear a cap and gown for their very own graduation ceremony at Bristol Cathedral last month.

The Horfield school teamed up with the University of the West of England to provide the Children’s University programme, which encourages students from Years 7 to 10, to take part in and facilitate learning activities outside of school hours. Students collected stamps for each activity they took part in, which are displayed in their own passport.

Fifty-six students, in Years 7 to 9, graduated this year through the scheme. OSB has had nearly 150 students graduate over the last two years.

​​​​ The Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion, which covers Filton, Little Stoke, Stoke Gifford and Bradley Stoke, held a service at the Stoke Gifford War Memorial on the morning of the 1st July 2016, to mark the hundredth Anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

At 07.28 RBL members and members of the public observed the national two minutes silence, and at 07.30 whistles were blown to mark the Anniversary.

Stoke Gifford Branch member Lee Bushby laid a wreath on behalf of the Stoke Gifford Branch at the Thiepval Memorial for the hundredth anniversary of the Somme.

Filton primary’s gold book award

Pupils from schools across South Gloucestershire, including Charborough Road Primary, celebrated the completion of this year’s Time 4 Reading schools award scheme last month.

The celebration event was held at Marlwood School in Alveston and saw pupils joined by the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Erica Williams, teachers and education staff.

Pupils enjoyed a fun day of reading related activities including a session with The Etherington Brothers, a writer and illustrator team. Around 75 South Gloucestershire schools participated in Time4Reading this year.

Cadbury Heath Primary School, Charborough Road Primary School and Marshfield Primary School all received gold awards.

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea.

Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am12.30pm.

Concord band is Westerly Showband’s training band. It also meets in Filton Library but on Fridays at 7.30 pm. Its tutor/ conductor is Keith Williams is well known as a teacher and performer in the Bristol area. His qualifications and experience make him the ideal person to coach mid-level adult players.

The pace of his rehearsals are gauged to suit of people who wish to progress. The biscuits are equal in quality to those of Westerly Showband; in fact they come out of the same tin!
