y memories of being in the sixthform are some of my fondest and in my opinion school sixth-forms are special places to study. Schools are well-equipped to provide the intimacy and the levels of care needed to support students in their journey from GCSEs to university or the world of work.

Deciding where to study after Year 11 is an important decision and we hope that this brochure will give you a flavour of what we can offer you and what life is like as a sixth-former at Liskeard.

We offer a broad range of courses including a full range of A Levels as well as a number of vocational qualifications (details of which can be found in the folder at the back of this prospectus).

Our facilities are superb – well-equipped study rooms with internet access and a large common room for socialising.

ello from the Sixth Form team! We are situated at the end of the common room and our door is always open to allow students to pop in and talk about any opportunities, successes or concerns that they wish to share.

We in turn are supported by our excellent team of tutors who regularly keep in contact with their tutees and have allotted time to interview students on a one to one basis. This allows constructive guidance for career or university plans.

All of this is underpinned by our outstanding subject teachers who work closely with students addressing their needs and providing challenges to enable all students to reach their potential.

Our students are amazing. Each year they impress me by the quality of their work and the projects that they undertake. Many Sixth Formers help by volunteering within our local community in Liskeard and the surrounding area. Others enjoy participating in STERTS productions

either on stage or behind the scenes. So there’s never a dull moment when you join our Sixth Form.

Outstanding

exam results

T

he world of education is going through many changes at the moment but through all this turbulence our students and teachers have continued to work with their usual enthusiasm and have been rewarded with a great deal of success. All of our students last year went to university, started an apprenticeship or joined the workforce.

We were delighted to see that our students did so well last summer especially in light of the added pressures with all their exams now being at the end of the year. They coped with

these challenges and exceeded our expectations.

This summer our A level students achieved outstanding results with our Maths and English departments achieving results in the top 10% of the country. The increase in the number of students achieving A*/A grades was particularly pleasing and once again every student achieved the university place of their choice. Our vocational courses at both level 2 and 3 had a 100% success rate with several candidates obtaining a merit or double distinction. Yet again our students have shown that through their own hard

work and support from their teachers, they have been able to achieve their potential.

We have a good track record of students going to prestigious universities. In the past couple of years Megan Longworth has gone to Oxford University to study Biomedical Sciences and two students went to Cambridge to study Maths. In addition to this the numbers of students going to Russell Group Universities is on the increase. This year Eleanor Frew has gained a place at Oxford to study Chemistry.

W

e are privileged to have some amazing Sixth Form teachers at Liskeard. Teachers with outstanding subject knowledge and expertise with the ability to inspire, motivate and develop the talent of our students.

Class sizes are smaller than in

the main school and students benefit from high quality individual support to enable them to thrive in their subjects.

Developing independence is a big part of being in the Sixth Form. With the changes in the structure of the A level exams we are now promoting the need for independent study in order to prepare our students for the rigour of the courses and for life beyond college.

Our established study skills co-ordinator, Mrs Helen Fry, will be assisting students in order to establish an effective working regime for each individual. With her tutoring skills she is able to guide any student to be able to unlock their true potential which will allow them to have a successful experience here and beyond.

Careers and Work experience T

hroughout the year we are lucky enough to have representatives who come in from universities or different providers to explain how to progress into their areas. Often they provide taster sessions or workshops.

This year Plymouth University came to our sixth form in order to run several practical classes for our budding architects who were then invited to the university open day. Our medical students made use of the chance to see the facilities that the Peninsular Medical School has to offer when they attended their demonstrations and lectures. They had the wonderful opportunity to speak with the lecturers and their current students.

Our students were then invited to take part in the universities e-mentoring

scheme which will allow them to experience what it is like as a first year medic. Warwick University students have also spent a week with our year 12 students by delivering one to one supervision sessions to support on line lectures which were delivered from the university itself. This has run for two years now and has been very successful. All this is reinforced with our work experience week which runs each year in July. This is a wonderful chance for our students to get out into the workforce and gain the extra skills which employers are looking for.

For those students who do not want to go to university we run a mixture of different workshops. These include CV writing with covering letters of introduction and mock interviews. We are able to

put these sessions on through our link with external providers. Our connection with the Job Centre in Liskeard also means that we get regular updates on apprenticeships and employment vacancies which are then circulated to years 12 and 13, which keeps them aware of the job market in Cornwall.

We are also lucky enough to have our own careers advisor, Mrs Collette Carlin, who regularly sees students and gives them advice and guidance.

e have completed our extensive new building programme which has given us impressive modern facilities that contribute to an excellent learning environment.

We now have a dedicated area which will provide our students with excellent study and social areas as well as support and guidance systems under the same roof. These facilities are local to you and so your participation in the Sixth Form will not involve lengthy travel time.

Geography Field Trip

T

he Geography Field Trip is a short residential to study beach morphology along Chesil Beach.

Students spend several days at Studland Bay constructing transects across the sand dunes to test textbook theories.

Time at Lulworth Cove allows them to research the conflict between tourism and the environment.

All these activities allow students to experience statistical analysis and fieldwork skills at first hand.

Art, Textiles & Media

T

he Art and Photography Department have an exhibition each year when all the students’ work is put on display for pupils, parents and the general public to view. The Textiles and Media Departments also showcase their work.

The finished paintings and artefacts are amazing and truly demonstrate the skills of our students.

London Visit

O

ur visit to London this year was again a two day event, staying over at a hostel in the heart of the city which allowed us time to explore London by night when places like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament look extra special.

On our first day we went to the London School of Economics and had a tour of their buildings followed by a seminar. We also went to Pearsons College where we met their student ambassadors. In the evening we ate in China town followed by a walk to Leicester Square, the Embankment and various other tourist sites. The next day we went to Camden Market, Covent Garden and the theatre to see Wicked and Book of Mormons.

Auschwitz Trip

T

hrough the Holocaust Educational Trust we are able to place students on their annual visit to Auschwitz. On their trip this year they heard a testimonial from Zigi Shipper, a holocaust survivor.

They were told of the horrific experiences and the way Zigi overcame them to remain positive and happy through the ordeal.

The trip also included a trip to a Polish town, that was a hive of activity for the Jewish population before the war, and the site of the Great Synagogue before the journey continued to the first Auschwitz concentration camp. A Jewish Rabi then led a visit to AuschwitzBirkenau for a period of more peaceful reflection.

It was an incredible learning experience for the students and allowed them to see first-hand the horrors, and hear the accounts of the survivors to allow the students to put their academic learning into perspective.

Electron Microscopy Centre Visit

Y

ear 12 Biology students visited the Electron Microscopy Centre at Plymouth University getting them off to a brilliant start for their brand new two year A level course.

The students had the opportunity to use state of the art Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopes which are used to study everything from meteorite crystallography to diagnostic pathology.

Following the lecture, we visited Plymouth University library where the students were able to use undergraduate books to further research the practical applications of electron microscopy.

Both Mr Inger and Mrs Inger were very impressed with the enthusiasm of the students and are very much looking forward to teaching them over the next two years.

Biology Trip

Y

ear 12 Biologists spent the day on the rocky shore at Wembury, conducting a quantitative analysis of biodiversity on different tidal zones on the shore.

They were joined by a volunteer from Looe Marine Conservation group who is also a second year Marine Biology

and Oceanography student. She was extremely impressed with their surveying skills. The students found some real treasure on the lower shore including beautiful star ascidians, velvet swimming crabs, polycheate worms, porcelain crabs, strawberry anemones and even a sand mason worm.

Summer School Experience

W

e are always very fortunate in placing students on summer residential courses and various taster days at universities around the country.

This last year we have placed students at Exeter, Southampton, Falmouth, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge. Each university gives students the opportunity of experiencing what it would be like to study at a prestigious place of learning.

All students have a chance of joining in on practical sessions, attending lectures and facing new challenges which go beyond A level studies.

Those students studying French also had a chance of spending time in France living with a family whilst acting as an assistant in a school. This is such a wonderful opportunity of using their language skills and absorbing the lifestyle and culture of their chosen area of interest.

T

his year we went to the Oxford Open Day and booked into various subject talks at Exeter College.

Whilst there we took the opportunity to look around a selection of colleges and speak with their ambassadors who took us on tours and explained a little about the college system. There was also the chance to explore the surrounding city and meet other students from all over the world.

Oxford & Cambridge Information Day

A

group of students attended an Oxford and Cambridge Information Day, which took place at the Eden Project.

Two Admission Officers representing each university gave a very clear and precise presentation which focused on the admissions process and what qualities Oxbridge are looking for.

Joining the admissions staff were four students, currently studying at either university, who all came from the Cornwall area. It was a great opportunity to hear their experience of the process and what life is like as an undergraduate.

I

n March we took a road trip to the University of Warwick with the year 12 further mathematicians. The students had their first real taste of university life. We were met by one of the student ambassadors who gave us a tour of the university. We were visiting the maths and statistics department and had a couple of lectures. These were very informative on the courses that are available, as well as studying away from home and living independently.

After that, we continued on our tour of the campus and had dinner in one of the restaurants. We stayed in one of the halls of residence overnight and this meant that our students had a real taste of campus life.

The next day we had a couple more lectures as well as a talk on student finances. We also had an active session on problem solving, during which the students worked on different types of mathematical problems. This was led

by Dr Richard Lissaman who will be doing some more work in the summer with our students. Lunch was provided in the department and then we worked on some maths problems in one of the main lecture theatre auditoriums.

Overall it was a very positive experience for our students and gave them a valuable insight into all aspects of university life.

Projects and challenges Maths Seen in Action

M

rs Hubartt took a group of her further mathematicians clay pigeon shooting as this was an ideal opportunity to see their mechanics in action.

They had just completed the section on projectiles and by observing the different releases of the clays the students were able to study the pathways mapped out by the missiles.

The Voice USA

F

ormer Sixth Form student Jessica Crosbie has been rubbing shoulders with the starts after appearing on hit TV show The Voice USA. Jess moved to America after completing her education at Liskeard Sixth Form to work for a year as a nanny before a friend, knowing how talented a singer she is, secretly sent a video of Jess performing to the show.

Jess was able to take her pick of three judges who turned around for her on the live show including Christina Aguliera and Pharrell Williams but she chose to be mentored by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

Youth Parliament Engineering Project

T

he engineering Education Scheme aims to introduce sixth form maths and physics students to the world of engineering by creating an opportunity to work with a company who have identified a real issue that needs solving.

The project develops teamwork skills, project and time management skills, computer aided design skills and other transferable skills. This year Will Kitto, Tyler Phillips and Teighan Borlase did just that, when they designed and made a hydraulic log splitter.

O

ur debating team was entered into The European Youth Parliament Debate, for the South West Region last year. After an inspiring introduction from Ben Bradshaw MP, the competition began. There were six rounds of debate and each team represented a Committee, Liskeard being The Committee on Culture and Education. The students needed to understand all EU issues and take part in every debate.

Each debate required one team member to deliver an opening speech.

Jordan delivered his speech with confidence and this set the debate off.

Everyone put points forward, defending and opposing the issue and after a courageous final speech by Josh the whole room voted. Cheers all round as our team had won, the majority voted to oppose the bill!

Everyone agreed it was an amazing experience. “To be part of this has been fantastic.� said one student and all agreed they would like to take part next year.

Activities and team building Summer Induction Day

T

his year our summer induction day was a combination of seminars and practical sessions. The lectures were delivered by Plymouth University where our students did various activities in the common room and the day was completed by a series of team building activities led by the PE department.

No matter where students have studied before by the end of the day they have experienced all sorts of challenges and above all have had a good time and made new friends.

There are a large number of extra -curricular opportunities available for students. We aim to develop students

full potential. To aid this the following choices are available: • Echo Centre – helping with disabled clients and organising events for them • Leadership schemes in sports and arts • Astronomy • PE Ambassador • Voluntary work • Peer coaching • Duke of Edinburgh Award • Reading Scheme Mentors • Primary School Visits • Mentoring in Maths, English and Science

Cornwall Sixth Form Sports Strategy

P

hysical Education in our Sixth Form focuses on the health and wellbeing of all our students and the important social aspects that physical activity brings. We recognise that our students work extremely hard in their academic studies and therefore need a time to channel their energy, have fun and relieve stress.

Not only do we offer serious competition for our sports minded students, through the Football Academy and various county tournaments including netball and hockey, but we are also part of the new Cornwall Sixth Form Sports Strategy,

and as such we meet with other Sixth Forms once every half term and give our students the opportunity to engage in some social and friendly competition.

These days encompass a range of activities including beach volleyball and beach rugby, racket sports, rounders, hockey and netball. The activities are mixed and focus on participation and enjoyment, but there is an added bonus for the winners who will represent East Cornwall in the finals of the games in the Summer term.

he Christmas fancy dress is usually held at the Hannafore Point Hotel and is always great fun. It is an opportunity for students and staff to forget the pressures of college to have an evening to relax. After weeks of planning your costume you get a chance to show it off.

Sunshine and smiles…that’s how Liskeard School and Community College Sixth Formers will remember their summer prom. Last summer the weather held out and everyone was able to enjoy the warm summer evening at St Mellion. It was a perfect way for our students to celebrate their time at Liskeard having all worked so hard for their exams. Lydia Bridges and Jordan Dobson were Belle and Beau of the ball but all our students looked stunning in their dresses and tuxedos.

ach year we have our own elections in order to encourage students to take responsibility for their own committees, which they lead and run throughout the year.

Our Presidents for this coming year are Abi Sharma Burford and Will Kitto and our Vice-Presidents are Olivia Mckay and Jordan Hembrow. The comittee consists of Teighan Borlase, Amee Barrow, Tom Pugh and Elliot Clark.

There are three main committees, Publicity, Social and Community, which concentrate on supporting students from years 7 to 11. Each one has a project manager to lead them. Enthusiasm

and an abundance of energy from all those who take part will mean that their fundraising activities will be rewarding and entertaining as they always are when our students commit themselves to charity events.

Last year the committee arranged for the lads to have their legs waxed and they raised nearly £100. On Halloween they raised over £100 with different fun events in the common room.

Ella Sanford grew her hair then had it cut off for the Little Princess Trust. Whilst doing this she also raised £545 for Cancer Research.

uilding on the success of our Football Academy we have created two more ‘excellence academies’ for elite students in the arts and in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

These academies provide opportunities for students to work with professionals in their area of interest, attend

masterclasses and workshops as well as visiting prestigious businesses and universities.

In addition to these our Trelawney Academy supports students who have the ability to gain A*s or have the desire to attend one of the worlds best universities.

Are there course fees?

Post-16 Students pay no course fees. Some subjects may require money for field trips or a contribution towards materials but we take pains to ensure value for money.
