Introduction

Letter From The Chairman Welcome to Evergreen Ball 2021 Wow what a year it has been! 2020 created a new vernacular that found us Zooming, pivoting, and social distancing to name a few.

We’ve learned to work from home, order most things online, and stay in touch even if we must do it from a distance. Tonight finds us celebrating safely from our homes but with the same sense of community and purpose that makes the Evergreen Ball special.

We are very fortunate to live in the shadows of the most-visited park in the country, our Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In this unprecedented year while everyone was staying socially distanced, families came out in record numbers to visit our park. With much love and use of the park comes the need for care and preservation.

Senator Lamar Alexander spearheaded the efforts for additional funding for infrastructure repair, but there are many other muchneeded projects that cannot be included in this funding. The need is still great and contributions from friends like you ensure that future generations will also be able to enjoy our national treasure.

Welcome From The Co-Chairs Hardly any of us could have predicted the events that came almost on the heels of the 2020 Evergreen Ball. What is not a surprise is that so many people have chosen Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a place to spend time with family and explore the wonders of nature during this time. Despite closing for almost two months, the park still saw another record-breaking year for visitors, and the costs of maintaining and improving the park also continue to increase.

One of the driving forces behind the founding of the park was preservation. Not only did the establishment of the park save the forests and mountain wilderness, visitors can also catch a glimpse into the lives of the families that called this area home. Those days of farming, homesteading, and logging can still be experienced by visiting the many historical structures remaining in the park.

Today, many of these beloved cabins, churches, and barns require restoration and maintenance so that future generations may experience the mountain history that those buildings bring to life. Tonight, we kick off Friends of the Smokies’ new campaign “Forever Places” to ensure the preservation and rehabilitation of these historic structures.

This year we challenge you to remember what the Evergreen Ball is all about, giving back to this place that has given so much to us.

Consider all that these structures have weathered over the years and the opportunities they continue to offer.

The park needs our support more than ever to provide a safe place for recreation and education, not just for today, but for generations to come.
