DUNSTABLE TOWN v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos - 3

Change the conversation on mental health #headsup thefa.com/headsup

inside the boardroom this week our views from the boardroom are supplied by our Treasurer Matt Carrington A very warm welcome to today’s visitors, Aylesbury Vale Dynamos who have proved to be somewhat of a bogey team for the Blues over the last couple of years. We expect to be equally challenged again, with hopefully football being the winner by full time. This time of year is especially poignant in the football world, with it being 32 years since that tragic day on Leppings Lane at Hillsborough. Though as a young lad I started following Liverpool because of their success (yes, I will admit I was a glory hunter) the way the community looked after the families of the 96 in the aftermath is why I love this game and it’s something I identify with Dunstable Town Since the day I walked through the turnstiles at Creasey, I have had a strong sense of belonging, so when I was asked to join the committee I jumped at the chance to help. Though I wish I had the talent of the players that we currently have, and always keep my boots in the car in case Gareth is ever short, I am proud that I am able to help my home town club in whatever capacity it needs, something that I believe I share with the rest of the committee. When I took over as Treasurer at the start of this season I initially spent many an hour worrying about the impact COVID-19 had in terms of sponsorship, but the longer the season progressed, the more confident I became

with the sustainability of the club, due to our amazing fans. With every player and match sponsored, the generously to the Crowdfunder and support at games, both home and away, I honestly believe we have a fan base that will help us succeed in being a club the community can be proud of! It is why I feel genuinely upset that these games have to be played behind closed doors, and hope that our live commentary on social media gives you some element of the atmosphere and with life slowly returning back to normality, hope we can warmly welcome you back at the start of next season Lastly, I want to thank our fundraising manager, Peter Bottom for his donation to the club to help us get these games played. Peter is too modest to accept praise but is definitely a massive credit to this club Come on you Blues!!!

opposition spotlight..

AYLESBURY VALE DYNAMOS IS AN AMALGAMATION OF AYLESBURY FC AND BEDGROVE DYNAMOS, TWO LOCAL CLUBS WITH A RICH HISTORY Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negrettiand Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negrettiand Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. in 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negrettiand Zambrasold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe

and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly, Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth

teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard-working committee fought hard to establish. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses.

Tue 20 Oct Wembley 0 - 3 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. . After Christmas, the side suffered due to long term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi-professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last ‘level five’ team in the country to remain

8 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming ‘Double Winners’ Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semifinal to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league the 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks

& Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham , Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back-room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 Scott Reynolds was appointed manager and when he resigned midway through the season it was left to Paul Bonham to take control but because of ground grading issues the Southern League made the decision to relegate the club and so after ten seasons in the Southern League the club will start the 2019 season in the South Midlands League after what has been a difficult and turbulent period. Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them,

they managed not only to win the Under 12’s Aylesbury& District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13’s & 14’s league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad, and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona’s trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8’s through to under 18’s. At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14’s, the Mayor’s Cup at under 12’s, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fair play awards for their respective leagues. In the last 20 seasons across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football and play at the highest possible level.

green and bear it Sports Broadcasting student at UCFB, ben green wonders if Wycombe Wanderers Can beat the drop “No one said it was going to be easy, but this is Wycombe Wanderers, and we will keep believing till the very end”. It is almost two years since Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth uttered these words to me in a post-match interview after his struggling League One side had narrowly lost a crucial home game to high flying Charlton Athletic. Since then, the Chairboy’s have been on the most incredible journey the club has ever seen. Surviving relegation back to League Two that season, then, almost impossibly, achieving promotion to the Championship last term. Like Gareth said back in April 2019, ‘no one said it was going to be easy’ and Wanderers have found their first season in the Championship a real challenge. Winning only 8 games so far, scoring 30 and conceding 64, they find themselves propping up the table with 5 games left to play. Despite some notable wins against Reading and most recently Blackburn, the blues are 9 points off safety even after going unbeaten in their last 3 out of their last 4 games and keeping 5 clean sheets in their last 6. So, what are the reasons for their struggles this season? Ultimately, the disparity in financial power from the Chairboy’s to the majority of the Championship is a gap very rarely seen. Wycombe, a team that cost under £2 million to assemble, have often found themselves up against former Premier League sides, with teams worth in excess of £50 million! A financial boost can be goldust to the teams at the foot of the table. Take Nottingham Forrest for example, who in January brought in the likes of Glen Murray and the talented manager Chris Houghton, who has since steered them away from the

relegation places with ease. A team so cheap also comes with a certain level of experience and Wycombe’s squad doesn’t boast much of that when it comes to the Championship. The majority of the squad plying in the 2nd tier for the first time, it took the Blues 7 attempts to register their first point of the season: a clear indicator of the squads much needed learning process at this level. For Wycombe fans, what are the reasons to remain positive? A recent upturn in results has seen the club achieve back-to-back wins for only the second time this season. Wycombe appear to have found their form in recent weeks. Despite continuing to struggle in front of goal, the return of David Stockdale between the sticks has significantly tightened up the defensive aspect of their game. The squad seems to be at its strongest, with big players like Uche Ikpeazu and Ryan Tafazoli regularly fit, compared to the first half of the season where the pair rarely featured at all. There is a clear belief amongst the playing and coaching staff that they can survive relegation, and this has been a common theme amongst the squad for the entirety of Ainsworth’s tenue. Nobody expected Wycombe to get promoted from League Two, win the League One playoffs and compete in the Championship, but they have; so, what’s to say they can’t pull off another miracle? With 5 games left to play, Wanderers need to win at least 4 and hope teams above them drop points along the way. Tough fixtures against the likes of Swansea, Bournemouth and Middlesbrough await, however, if any club could do the unthinkable, its Wycombe Wanderers. They couldn’t survive, could they?

all the latest news and views from the dunstable town youth section Creasey Park was the venue on a wet and windy December morning, which saw the U13 Lions taking on local rivals Leighton United. Playing up the hill in the first half Dunstable created several opportunities with Harry and Darren causing Leighton problems down the flanks, Aamir led the line well and was unlucky not to score.

proud of, gave the team a much needed 1-0 lead. Leighton continued with a quality of passing that kept them in the game on a heavy pitch, Hamaad and Billy gave their usual solid defensive performances, but you sensed another goal was needed.

Dunstable’s passing game wasn’t quite clicking and a big team talk was needed from Manager Gary Rogers as the half finished at 0-0.

Eventually the hard work from midfielders Joe, Matthew and Buddy paid off with Josh dribbling through to slot in a fine second goal. With the match secure , in the last seconds of the game, some neat midfield passing at last started to click, leading to a lovely passing interchange between Kai and Charlie, the latter then beating the full back to cross for a glancing header by Kai to seal a 3-0 victory.

In the second half, the boys started to get on top and a stunning long range pass from goalkeeper Callum found Kai breaking behind the Leighton defence, a sublime first touch and a finish that Chris Stapleton would have been

Joining the many supporters were committee members Peter and Andrew, the latter rapidly becoming the team’s lucky mascot having witnessed games that have yielded clean sheets and maximum points! COYB!

As Leighton pressed Jake and David marshalled the defensive line often creating attacks when winning the ball and playing forward out of defence.

day and knight george knight shares his views of the day Can Football Finally Come Home? England are yet to win a major tournament since 1966. Given they reached the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, hopes in the camp will be high as the squad look to achieve something that no Englishman has done for over 50 years. This article will focus on what players could be key for England in the upcoming European Championship, as well as my starting 11 for that all important first game. Manager Gareth Southgate adopted to a 3/5 at the back for the 2018 World Cup, this must have worked given England reached the semifinals. Now three years on and there will be a few regular starters from that tournament that might not make the squad, Ashley Young and Kieran Trippier the main suspects. But the new youthful look to the team with the likes of Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham cementing places in recent squads, fans have a lot to be hopeful of heading in to this summer’s competition. EURO 2020 was meant to take place last year with venues scattered around Europe for matches, given there was a global pandemic UEFA thought it’d be best to delay the tournament for a year. It is still undecided where matches will be played but it has been confirmed that the semi-finals and final will be hosted at Wembley Stadium, as well as all other matches that England play at the tournament. Harry Kane – Arguably the best striker in world football at this moment of time, with 19 goals and 13 assists this season for Spurs Kane has added that creative side to his game. The England captain will be hoping to continue this form as he goes into the European Championships and with a tough game against

Croatia in the group stage, England fans will be hoping that the number nine will be fit and firing to take England all the way. Jack Grealish – A player that is made to play on the international stage, Southgate wanted more from Grealish and since the start of last season he has produced 14 goals and 16 assists in a struggling Aston Villa side, many journalists and pundits have compared him to Paul Gascoigne, a player that can be used on all occasions. Can pick the ball up deep to find a pass and can drive at defenders with ease. If you put Grealish in a phone box with two defenders he’d come out the other way with the football, a magician that simply must play. John Stones – A player that was written off by many, when Stones completed a move from Everton to Manchester City eyebrows were raised at the £50m price paid. It certainly hasn’t been easy for the defender and for the last two years had struggled to cement a place in that City defence, however a new lease of life and Stones is thriving, the best defensive record in the Premier League and Stones has been at the heart of it. With Man City still competing in all domestic competitions and edging closer to a fifth league title Stones will be looking to take his incredible form into the EURO’s. Here is my chosen line-up for the first group match 4-2-3-1 - Nick Pope, Trent Alexander-Arnold, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane (C)

on this day

17 April 1937..

A Guinness World Record Type Of Day over 149,000 squeeze into Hampden Park On 17 April 1937, Scotland hosted England at Glasgow’s Hampden Park for the last match of the 1937 British Home Championship. The official attendance at the match was 149,415, which set a world record at the time and remains a record for European competition.

The two sides were competing for second place, as Wales had already secured the title by winning all three of its matches. Scotland and England, meanwhile, had identical records - both had 2-1 losses to Wales and 3-1 wins over Ireland. On the day, Scottish striker Bob McPhail (pictured) provided the decisive edge, scored 2 goals in the Scots’ 3-1 win over the English.

28 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

The true attendance figure for the day is unknown, as a large number of people reportedly entered the stadium without paying. But the official recorded attendance of 149,415 was, at the time, the largest football crowd in world history. That number was subsequently surpassed on the last day of the 1950 World Cup, when Uruguay upset Brazil 2-1 at the Maracaña in Rio de Janeiro. FIFA recorded the official attendance for that match as 173,850, but, like the previous record, it does not include a large number of attendees who entered the stadium illegally.

The 1937 figure, however, remains the highest recorded attendance for a European match.

on the road

groundhopping with dan roberts..

the regular column from our Merchandise Man, Dan Roberts’ and his brand-new lockdown hobby of groundhopping With The 61FC & Totternhoe ticked off & lockdown set in for the Winter I decided again to use Google and see what other local grounds I could visit. One local team turned out to be Mursley United situated between Milton Keynes & Leighton Buzzard. This is a very lovely quiet village club. I imagined cream teas and cricket even on a football pitch! Mursley play in SSML Division 2. There is something about these small grounds I am starting to really like. Being less than 10 miles to Milton Keynes I decided to head north and came to Bletchley. Google again decided my route. First was MK Unite but on arriving there seemed to be a name change to MK Irish. The ground looked like it was being renovated. Any Dunstable Town anorak will describe in great detail, Chris Stapleton’s worldie in a preseason friendly on this very ground in 2019.

30 - DUNSTABLE TOWN v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

From here Google suggested I visit MK Galacticos so off I went. This was at the Furzton Sports Ground which is just a field and changing facilities. There is something about these grounds which I really like. Unfortunately, the dug outs had been blown over. From Furzton Google maps took me to Stony Statford Town FC which was 6 miles away. A quick bit of research said they played in the North Bucks & District League. First up as you arrive is the croquet club and the cricket club

first. The entrance to the football ground was hidden away round the back. The plaque on the wall of the stand commemorating the young life of Jonathan Smith really moved me. In fact, I found my whole visit to Stony Stratford to be an emotional experience I had not expected or been prepared for. It is one of those feelings you cannot quite put your finger on. The dugouts took my attention. Leaning on the pitch side barrier I allowed myself to imagine a good game going on under the floodlights. Off then to Deanshanger FC 4 miles from Stony Stratford. It looked a nice ground as you can see from the photos. I saw they were. Members of North Bucks and District League so a local derby would be Stony Stratford where I had just left. Maybe once Covid restrictions are lifted I will get a couple of the Creasey Park faithful to take in a couple of games just on our doorstep. I let Deanshanger be my last ground of the day & headed for home.
