Its Yate Riverside development is progressing and is set to give the town a further boost when it opens, with a cinema, high street shops and restaurants adding to the local economy. In Chipping Sodbury more businesses are opening in Horse Street, following a spate of activity last month. It’s the busiest period since Waitrose opened it’s doors in October 2013. More, page 4.

Spring clean for Abbotswood shopping precinct TWO police officers and a dozen police cadets joined a team of residents for a spring clean of Abbotswood shopping centre in Yate. Some 30 local people helped with the clear-up, which included litter picking, pulling up weeds and cleaning gulleys. Garage doors and benches were also painted during the event, grass was cut and flower baskets placed outside a number of shops. The day was organised by Caroline Jacques of the Jacob’s Well community group and also involved members of the Abbotswood Action Group (AAG), police sergeant Andy Hucker and PC Angharad Baynham, Yate’s neighbourhood beat manager. A number of young people turned out to help and children’s activities arranged. Mary Wright, chairwoman

of AAG, said: “The weather this time was on our side as it was a gloriously sunny day. “Everyone worked extremely hard to carry out everything we had intended to achieve, from the people providing much appreciated refreshments to those doing the heavier work. “AAG is very grateful to all those who helped in any way and for the equipment provided by South Gloucestershire Council. “We hope to take forward all this enhancement of the area together with Yate Town Council, which is in the process of purchasing the area.” The council recently reached an agreement to buy some space at Abbotswood, such as paved and grassed areas in front of the shops and some pieces of land behind them, which will make it easier to carry out improvements.

Celebrations for long standing success and new business arrivals

BUSINESS prospects are continuing to look promising in Yate and Chipping Sodbury with more newcomers and a landmark anniversary to celebrate. Only last month Yate and Sodbury Voice reported on four new businesses opening in Chipping Sodbury. Now there is more good news, with a further shop and restaurant moving in, while down the road Yate Shopping Centre is planning events to mark 50 years of trading. Chipping Sodbury’s economy is experiencing its busiest period since Waitrose opened in October 2013. Its latest arrivals are both in Horse Street - Sooo Chic II being a second outlet for Shabby Chic Interiors. It is in the former Farrago fashion shop, vacated when proprietor Alex Newman decided to give up on reaching 25 years of trading.

Meanwhile Mexican tapas restaurant Amigos has taken over the premises previously occupied by Italian restaurant Giardino. At Yate Shopping Centre, a programme of events is being finalised for two days of celebrations on August 22 and 23. The complex was one of the first US-style shopping malls in the UK and was opened in a blaze of publicity in 1965 by top radio comedian Ted Ray and Coronation Street favourite Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner in the TV soap. Over the years it has seen a number of changes but probably none as significant as those of recent times.

June, 2015

The new Tesco Extra and bus station are now well established, changes were made to East Walk and North Parade, while West Walk altered significantly with the incorporation of Westgate Health Centre. Now the town is about to get its long awaited cinema within the new Yate Riverside leisure development, with potential improvement to the retail element next on the list. Crestbridge, which owns the shopping centre, is also looking at further improvements to the residential accommodation within the complex. Andy Lowry, the centre manager, said: “Crestbridge always promised to invest in Yate for the future and with these recent improvements, has now invested approximately £40 million since buying the centre ten years ago.” Mr Lowry said the anniversary events were both a celebration of 50 years of trading and of the success of the centre, which in an average year attracts more than 12 million visitors. The programme for that weekend includes a Music Through the Decades event

on the Saturday, performed by tribute bands. The popular Wurzels will be the headline act for the Sunday, with support from local bands. Centre marketing manager, Tracy King, said: “This will be a real family occasion and traders are being encouraged to get into the swing of things. We will be announcing the full line-up of acts once they are finalised.”

A FOOTBRIDGE in Wapley is back in use after work was completed to prepare it for the electrification of the railway beneath it. Revellers get into the mood at last year’s Big Lunch

BIG plans for this year’s Big Lunch. Thousands of people are expected to pack a picnic for an annual community get together in Chipping Sodbury. The event takes place in Broad Street on Sunday, June 7, where visitors will be treated to an afternoon of free entertainment. The Big Lunch, part of a national initiative to get neighbours together on the first Sunday of every June, will take on the theme of a traditional British Victory Day street party. “We want the people of Chipping Sodbury to dig out their Union Jack bunting and join us for what has become a highlight in the town’s busy calendar of fantastic community events,” said Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch chairman Alexandra Womack. “Last year our 1940s vintage theme proved extremely popular and we are echoing that with a Victory in Europe Day-style street party for 2015, tying in with the 70th anniversary of VE Day”. “We hope to honour those

trains. Network Rail, which produced a time-lapse film to show the work involved in the project, said the electrification programme would allow a new fleet of longer, faster, quieter and greener electric trains to serve passengers travelling between the Bristol area, London and Cardiff.

Wildlife walk at Wapley Bushes A WALK around the Wapley Bushes reserve has been organised as part of an annual programme of wildlife and conservation events in Yate and Chipping Sodbury. The afternoon tour on Sunday, June 28, will give people the chance to see the wildlife-rich reserve in the company of Avon Wildlife Trust’s Cabot group. Anyone who wants to join in the event should wear suitable footwear and meet at the Shire Way entrance to the woodland in south Yate at 2pm. Details of further events will be announced later.

Bristol Samba Band will again return for a show-stopping display and locally-based groups Razzamataz, Yate Star Twirlers and Stapleton School of Dance are among those to perform on a haycart stage. Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club will hold a children’s ‘havea-go’ stall and Yate and Chipping Sodbury ATC will host a free simulated training experience. Youngsters will be invited to take part in a red, white and blue fancy dress competition and a Chipping Sodburythemed photography contest, for under 11s, will be judged on the day by local photographer Rich McDonough.

yate&sodburyvoice www.yateandsodburyvoice.co.uk June, 2015 Rotary clubs team up to buy vital Police on the surgery item for helicopter medics beat in Yate T: 01454 800 127

MEMBERS of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club have helped the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity buy a vital piece of kit worth nearly £10,000. They were among 14 Rotary clubs across Bristol and Gloucestershire to raise funds for a video laryngoscope for the helicopter crews. The equipment allows medics to clear a patient’s airway and assist their breathing by inserting a tube with a microscopic

camera. Blocked or damaged airways are common in trauma victims and the video laryngoscope provides a clear image of any blockages or damage suffered. John Christensen, chief executive of GWAAC, said: “We are so thankful for the generosity and kindness shown to us by the Rotary Clubs in District 1100. Their donation has enabled our charity to buy a vital piece of kit.”

THE next beat surgeries for Yate are about to be held, giving people the chance to meet local police and raise any problems with them. Officers can also give crime prevention advice to those calling into the sessions.

Corinne’s Café in Abbotswood will host a surgery on Wednesday, June 3, from 2pm-3pm, with the Ridgewood Centre in Station Road the venue on Saturday, June 6, from 10am11am.

Local families, friends of the school and residents from the wider South Gloucestershire area are invited to take part, with prizes to be awarded to the top three participants and medals presented to everyone who takes part, Anyone interested should register at the school office. Entry is £5 in advance per family of four or £7 on the day. Children under four are free but the route will not be suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

A MAJOR fund raising effort resulted in a new trim trail being installed in the playground at North Road Primary School, Yate. A total of £3,750 was collected since last September to pay for the equipment, with money coming in from a host of events and activities. Head teacher, Jo Williams, said: “After speaking to all the children, the vast majority wanted things to climb and swing on. It is very popular and

South Glos Show gets the hump The organisers of the South Glos Show are bringing something different to this year’s event with some camel racing. There will be 12 races over the weekend, with four camels taking part in each race. People have the chance to be a camel owner for the day or buy a race sponsor package. All the money raised will go to the Great Western Air Ambulance charity. Show organiser, Darren Hawkins, said “we’re really excited about the camel racing, it should be a lot of fun, and add to an already great line up for the show. We’re hoping to make a lot of money for the air ambulance too.” Those interested in getting involved in the camel racing can contact the show via their website; www.southglosshow. co.uk The South Glos Show takes place next to the Westerleigh Road in Enfield on 1&2 August.

National Recognition for Yate Heritage Centre Although we at Yate Heritage Centre are not averse to promoting ourselves far and wide, the vast majority of the work here rightly focusses on our wonderful local history and serving the surrounding community. However, every now and again we receive recognition on a wider stage. Recently, Cherry Hubbard our Education Officer submitted Thelma Barlow’s factory works pass for inclusion in the British Museum’s prestigious “Teaching History in 100 Objects”, a national educational project involving any museums with an outstanding object with a fascinating story.

What possible object of national importance could Yate Heritage Centre have you may ask? The item in question is a fragment of a Parnall Aircraft works pass, commonplace enough in wartime factories. However, this works pass was directly involved in probably the most traumatic event in Yate’s history, namely the raid on Parnall Aircraft in February 1941

Will Writing & Estate Planning

www.yateandsodburyvoice.co.uk

resulting in 51 casualties with a further 3 in another raid a week later. Thelma Barlow’s pass was retrieved from her handbag having been left behind in the factory in the main bombing raid on the Parnall Aircraft works. The pass tells a visual story. Clearly charred, the fragment has evidently been involved in a dramatic event and was obviously affected by the heat of bomb damage within the handbag. The British Museum was clearly impressed by the historic context of the fragment and how it might enable children to understand the Second World War. It told a clear story of bombing in industrial Britain and also illustrates how female staff were a key feature of most wartime factories. Thus, the fragment, while only small, has enough dramatic history to be included amongst objects such as the Sutton Hoo helmet, the first passenger locomotive and the Bletchley Park enigma machine. Most museums included in this project are either national or major regional institutions. Firstly, we are indebted to

June, 2015

Susan Tubey and the Town Council for passing on the object to us. Cherry Hubbard receives our greatest admiration for putting together the application for the artefact to be recognised as something of national importance. I must also thank Thelma Bennett herself who made the pass and its story accessible in the public domain and ultimately for future children to discover the dramatic events of World War II. The artefact is one of many fascinating items in our current Second World War display at Yate Heritage Centre.

‘I’ve found this lump…’

O

ne of the most frequent things that crops up during consultations is lumps and bumps. We often see animals because owners that have found a new lump whilst stroking or grooming their pet, or sometimes because they have noticed the pet licking or bothering at the area. The first important thing to know about lumps is that it can be very hard for us to definitively diagnosis what the mass is from look and feel alone. Sometimes we have suspicions about what it could be, but most of the time samples will need to be taken to investigate further. One of the tests we routinely perform is a fine needle aspirate (FNA). This involves inserting a needle into the lump to draw some cells off for us to smear onto a microscope slide. This slide often gets sent to an external lab for pathologists to examine. The result tells us what type of cells we have aspirated (drawn out) and gives us an indication as to whether there are any suspicious ones there or not. This can be useful when deciding whether we need to surgically remove the mass and may also help us plan our surgical approach, as some masses need larger margins of healthy tissue than others when they are removed.

Another test would be to biopsy the mass. This can involve taking small sections of the lump to send away or can involve removal of the entire mass, depending on factors such as the size, location and the results of the FNA. The tissue is sent to the lab for examination and the pathologists can then give us a much clearer idea of what type of mass we are dealing with, which enables us to give you a prognosis and further treatment options if required. Owners can help us to, as a history can be quite important. Things to mention include when you first noticed the mass and whether it has grown at all since you first saw it. Also does it cause your pet discomfort, are there any other masses we should know about or is your pet unwell at all? You can also help us to find smaller masses by clipping some hair off in the vicinity of the lump at home, as frequently we have owners that struggle to find the lump again when they are here in the consult room! Above all, don’t be frightened about finding a lump. The best thing to do is to get your pet checked over so that we can discuss the options with you and start treatment (if needed!) sooner rather than later. Ring us on 01173355999 if you would like to make an appointment.

Big pull to clear problem weed VOLUNTEERS are needed to help clear an invasive weed in Yate. Himalayan balsam grows and spreads along stream and river banks, smothering native plants and causing flooding. But an event called the Big Pull, organised by South Gloucestershire Council, will help get rid of at least some of the troublesome plant by pulling it up. A similar event last year resulted in more than 100 volunteers helping to clear a 675-metre stretch of the River Frome. Anyone who wants to get involved should turn up for one or more of three Saturday sessions on June 6, July 25 or August 8. Each event runs from 10am-1pm, with volunteers asked to meet at the far end of Celestine Road. Free snacks and refreshments will be provided and helpers should wear weatherproof clothing and strong footwear. Equipment and guidance will be supplied.

T: 01454 800 127 14 yate&sodburyvoice www.yateandsodburyvoice.co.uk June, 2015 Summer play scheme School introduces for lively youngsters yoga to combat exam stress

Students from Chipping Sodbury School have been offered the opportunity to try a more unconventional way of preparing for their exams. Year 12 and 13’s have had the opportunity to participate in a series of yoga lesson specifically designed to help them manage exam nerves and mentally prepare for successful exam results. With exam season in full swing, it is a particularly stressful

time for young people, parents and teachers, which adds extra pressure on the already demanding school day. Students have participated in flowing yoga postures, stressbusting breathing techniques and deep relaxation that are aimed to help release stress and tension in the body and mind, leaving the students feeling relaxed and motivated. Local yoga teacher, Nazama Tague, from Yoga-in volunteered her time to teach the students. Nazama said “The physical benefits of yoga are well-known, but yoga also has educational benefits like improving ability to concentrate, building selfconfidence and learning to switch off and relax”. Nazama also added “It was a pleasure being able to share my knowledge with the students & giving them a toolkit of techniques that will help them achieve their best during exams”

CHILDREN will be able to let off steam during a two-week summer play scheme in Chipping Sodbury. Funded by Sodbury Town Council, the sessions will be open to youngsters of primary school age, with priority given to those living in the town and neighbouring Old Sodbury. Activities have been planned

to run in the youth centre in Hounds Road during the weeks beginning August 3 and 10. Each session will run from 9.30am-1pm on weekdays only, with the closing date for booking places set for July 10. More information and online booking is available on the council’s website.

Candles of hope to shine in loving tribute at Yate Relay for Life A MARATHON walking relay in Yate is set to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK. Relay for Life will also give those affected by cancer the chance to light a candle in memory of friends and relatives who have died of the disease. Yate has been involved in the 24-hour fund raising event since 2006 and so far has collected more than £250,000. Last year’s event alone brought in more than £37,000 and organisers hope to do even better when the 2015 relay takes place at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5. Teams of walkers of all ages and level of fitness can get involved, with groups of up to 15 people able to sign up for the challenge. Participants are asked to raise as much money as possible ahead of the relay by organising events such as quiz nights and supermarket bag-packing sessions, as well as getting donations and sponsorship. At the relay, team members will take it in turns to walk around the athletics track while a programme of activities keeps others entertained when they are not resting, eating or sleeping in tents. The event is due to start at noon on the Saturday and as dusk falls that evening, a Candle of Hope ceremony will see candles placed around the track with messages remembering people who have died of cancer. Helene Craddock, chairwoman of the organising

committee, said: “Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer. Taking part in Yate Relay for Life is a positive way to be part of the local community and help make a real difference in the fight against the disease. “The Candle of Hope ceremony is incredibly moving and highlights the real reason everyone joins together for the event.” Helene is a cancer survivor and said she would light a candle to remember her grandmother, who died of the condition. Similar relays are held in 20 countries, with the original established in the USA to support

American cancer research. In Britain, work funded by Cancer Research UK has helped survival rates double in the past 40 years. More details about the Yate relay are available on the website yaterelayforlife.org.uk

Our inhouse groups will be on the bill as well as our younger contingent - Junior FR. Junior FR’s hard work under the direction of MD Wendy Howse and her dedicated team of helpers paid off in March when they competed in the U14 class at Thornbury Eisteddfod, singing a 3-part a cappella arrangement of ‘Who’s the Best’, followed by ‘Edelweiss’ accompanied by Jo Luddington on the piano. They won their class with an improved score of 87% and were awarded a Distinction. They are now working towards the show on 27th June, and also Iron Acton’s ‘Prom’s in the Meadow’, on 4th July. After last September’s successful one day workshop for girls, Fascinating Rhythm and Junior FR will be running another workshop this November thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire and The Thornbury Rotary Club.

Please contact WendyHowse@ hotmail.com for general info about JFR and bookings. Fascinating Rhythm have recently moved their rehearsals from Rangeworthy Village Hall to the Greenfield Centre in Winterbourne. We still rehearse on a Thursday night from 7.30 –

All moved for Michael - including the garden shed A LANDMARK was reached when Michael Brimble moved to Chipping Sodbury from Iron Acton as part of a major housing improvement scheme. Mr Brimble, 76, became the 50th resident of Merlin Housing Society to move house during the scheme that will eventually see the redevelopment of 450 homes by the Chipping Sodbury-based association. They are being replaced with up to 750 modern, energy efficient premises - but only once the people living in the old ones have a new roof over their heads. Mr Brimble had lived in one of four Merlin bungalows in Nibley Lane for nearly ten years, was settled in the village and took great pride in his garden. But as the bungalows were in a poor condition, they were highlighted for redevelopment. Mr Brimble admitted he was anxious when he was first told about the move but project housing officer Sarah Durbin found a bungalow in Chipping Sodbury for him. Mr Brimble said: “When I walked in the door it was like a mirror image of my old

bungalow, except 30 years younger. “I really liked it and Sarah told me not to worry about anything, saying they’d even move my shed - and sure enough they did. “I had been very happy in my old home so when Merlin wanted to re-house me, it was a shock. I’d dreaded having to live on the third floor of a block of flats.

“But I went back to my old property the day after I moved and I couldn’t believe it. As soon as I walked in the front door I was hit by this strong, damp, musty smell. “I had just accepted the damp as one of those things but after one day away, I realised how bad it had been. It’s been a really good move for me and I am very satisfied with my new home.”

Sarah said: “Moving a customer does require a lot of organisation and working together across different parts of the business to ensure all their needs are met.” Merlin recently won planning permission for the redevelopment of the Iron Acton properties. Meanwhile building work on its first site in Coalpit Heath is due to start in June.

My first days as the local MP

A

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate and Sodbury Voice

s a local man who born and raised in South Gloucestershire, it is a huge honour to be elected as the local MP. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor: Steve Webb, for his service to this constituency over the years - I have big shoes to fill, but I will be working as hard as I can for our community and hitting the ground running. It has been a very busy first few days. I have been setting up a drop-in constituency office in the local area which people can visit without having to make an appointment - I want to be as accessible locally as possible and I hope this will start to demonstrate that. I have held my first constituency surgery and met with the Yate and Sodbury Marie Curie Fundraising Group to support their local efforts. I have also starting work

on my next Jobs Fair – I will be inviting local employers to get together under one roof to meet residents in an informal setting, so people who are looking for work have the opportunity to speak to local businesses who are trying to fill vacancies. It can be hugely dispiriting if you receive email after email telling you that your job application has been unsuccessful, and I hope that these Jobs Fairs, where people can speak to employers face to face will help change that locally. I will put the date on my website as soon as it is confirmed. I have found my first days to be faced paced, busy and rewarding, but above anything else, I want to serve my community – South Gloucestershire is my home. If there is ever anything I can help with, please do not hesitate to get in touch: luke. hall.mp@parliament.uk.

Music society tuned up and ready to go into new season AS one successful season ends, another has already been planned by Chipping Sodbury Music Society. Seven concerts featuring mainly locally-based artists will make up the 2015-16 season, starting with the Roaring Fork Quintet. The musicians will be making a return visit to the town by popular demand to play music for woodwind instruments and the French horn. Their performance on October 13 will launch the 68th season of the society, which started life in the 1940s as the Downleaze Music Club. Each season runs from October to May, with concerts

held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. After the opening event, audiences can then look ahead to November 10 when the Antara Flute and Harp Duo, sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, has been booked. Vintage jazz group Sweet Rhythm will be on stage in December, to be followed into 2016 by the Bristol Chamber Choir, the Marylebone Woodwind Trio, local group Harbour Winds and Bristol guitarist Andreas Moutsioulis. Tickets are already available from the society’s website at www.csmusicsociety.co.uk or the box office on 01454 315741.

Local teenagers conquer Ten Tors

21

The Ten Tors challenge rightly holds a fearsome reputation for young people preparing to tackle the tough terrain of deepest Dartmoor. A weekend of walking in often wild weather with little sleep can be a tough call. But a group of teenagers from the area has triumphed in this year’s event, as helper (and proud mum) Helen Jackson tells us. The weekend of Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May 2015 was certainly a weekend to remember forever for six Explorer Scouts from the Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorer Scout Unit, based in Frampton Cotterell, as they completed the annual Ten Tors challenge in record time. The Army organises the challenge, designed to test the navigation skills, team work and stamina of 14 to 19 year olds, from Okehampton Camp on the edge of Dartmoor. Up to 2,400 teenagers in teams of six tackle distances of 35, 45 or 55 miles, depending on age, visiting 10 of Dartmoor’s Tors in a set order on one of 26 possible routes, before hopefully reaching the finish line before the gate closes at 5pm on Sunday. For the six team members of the Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorers - Patrick Goddard (Captain), Izzy Hawker, Louis Jackson, Gareth Jones, Tom Howell and Joshua Ovens the challenge began back in November last year, when training started with practice hikes in the snow, first aid courses and learning navigation skills to ensure the team would have the necessary skills to survive the harsh environment of Dartmoor, whilst carrying all their equipment and supplies required for up to 48 hours on the moor. The weekend itself started

early on Friday morning after taking the day away from the Ridings International Academy. The team arrived late morning at a breezy Okehampton camp ready for their stringent kit check, health and safety briefing, route planning and overnight stay under canvas, before the challenge started at 7am on Saturday. Saturday morning dawned and the teams were woken to the Army’s wake-up call of Gangnam Style by Psy being played over the PA system at 5am. The sun shone during the final preparations but the weather soon turned to get the team properly wet before they started! With bacon rolls in their bellies and carrying all their kit for up to 48 hours on the moor the team left the camp for the start line. By 7am over 2,000 teenagers in teams of six were gathered at the start point along with hundreds of spectators on the edge of Dartmoor. Two Sea King helicopters swooped in, bringing the cannon crews, who jumped out down a rope! A countdown from 10, the cannons were fired, and the teams were off on the 2015 challenge. The weather improved throughout the day, giving a glorious afternoon and evening. The Zeus Explorers reached Tor six by the end of day one, on target for their overnight camp and completion by the 5pm

Louis Jackson, Patrick Goddard (Captain), Gareth Jones, Josh Ovens, Izzy Hawker & Tom Howell.

deadline on Sunday. After another very early start on the Sunday morning, the team made good progress and used their training and determination to arrive at the finish line at 12.17pm, beating the previous Zeus record by over an hour. In Ten Tors tradition, the team finished in fancy dress – Bristol Rovers jester hats – proudly carrying the Zeus Explorers’ flag through a guard of honour formed by other scout groups at the event. After a well deserved pasty, the team members were presented with their individual medals and team certificate in front of a wall of cameras. Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorer Scouts were the 3rd team to finish out of 17 on the same route

– a fantastic achievement for a fantastic team! Explorer Scout Leader, Chris Harris, said this was an outstanding achievement, with the team finishing 3rd on their designated route, “highlighting the tremendous hard work and effort the team had put into their training and preparation for the event” Congratulations to all those involved. Zeus Explorer Scout Unit is open to everyone aged 14 to 18. They meet at Mafeking Hall in Coalpit Heath on Tuesdays 7.30 to 9pm, for activities including camps and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. For more information, please call the Leader Chris Harris on 07880 528810

Keys are always such important things

I

recently handed over the keys to number 10! A set of keys that have been the basis of unending discussion and debate over the centuries including recent times. The term Number Ten, of course, has a very clear and definite identity for most people in the U.K. In my case the keys to number ten were being handed back to the owner of a local hotel in Chipping Sodbury recently. Room number 10 has a very special view over the gardens at the back of the property. However, I did want to share with you all the significance of keys in a day and age when security, coded entrance to into many things and key steps in our life and lifestyle are so important. During a visit to South America a few years ago I spent some time in Guyana in order to

help the locals go forward with plans they had for enhancing life in general but especially in healthcare and a fair and sound legal system. My visits linked me to a Guyanese couple named Oslen and Sheila living in Georgetown their capital. A good many years ago a local person made it possible for them both to pursue their desired careers at a very high and almost unheard of level for Guyanese young adults. Oslen came to Lincolns Inns Fields in London and trained in Law. Sheila was allotted a place at Guy’s Hospital in London to become a nurse. They studied diligently, shared a lot of special experiences together in London and then returned home. Given time Sheila made an amazing difference in Georgetown

hospital and Oslen became the Chief Judge of Guyana. There is a key person or people in this great and true story. Namely, whoever made it happen! Oslen and Sheila were committed Christians. Everyone reading this can, I believe, hold the key to many situations in their daily lives. The influence, the practical support, the longer-term cares that people around us need. Looking back I can see that God holds the key to all unknown and I am glad. Because of this God is waiting to use me, and you to unlock new ways forward for our own loved ones, our neighbours and friends plus other people around us in His world. We do not have to be elected to engage in this, just remain open to His leading and guiding day by day.

CONSERVATIVES celebrated after winning the Thornbury and Yate parliamentary constituency and taking control of South Gloucestershire Council in the recent elections. Luke Hall secured a 1,495 majority over the Liberal Democrats’ Steve Webb to become the area’s MP, while at local level the Tories now hold 40 seats on the unitary authority. The general election result ended Mr Webb’s 18 years

representing the constituency at Westminster. For the past five years he had also been the highly regarded pensions minister in the coalition government. At South Gloucestershire Council, his Lib Dem colleagues have 16 seats, while voters returned 14 Labour councillors. Meanwhile Filton and Bradley Stoke Conservative MP Jack Lopresti retained his seat with an increased majority.

THE final stage in the upgrading of the Witches Hat play area in Yate has been completed with the opening of a skatepark and addition of play equipment. Most of the transformed playground on Westerleigh Road was officially re-opened in early May as part of a £148,000 improvement project. Now everything is in place for youngsters to enjoy, including a trampoline, fireman’s pole, new shelter, six-metre bridge and specialist climbing and rope structures. There is also a witch’s

hat climbing frame and a fort running through the park to nets in the trees. Ahead of the finishing touches being added, users of the play area took part in a workshop that taught them how to use traditional woodland tools. The youngsters were shown how to shave wood and create ladder rungs for one of the play features at the site. The workshop was organised by Yate Town Council and run by Touchwood, the suppliers of the play equipment.

follow us on Twitter @yateandsodburyvoice 25 yate&sodburyvoice June, the season of Pimms and strawberries. Long-lasting Syllabub

June heralds the beginning of summer, with all the lovely soft fruits and berries. Nothing beats the first British strawberries and this month I’m sharing with you my favourite recipe for strawberries strawberry syllabub. This is my kind of recipe, make it in advance and then enjoy a glass of Pimms with your guests before you serve this luscious summer dessert. For best flavour do make sure that you remember to do the first stage of dissolving the sugar into the wine the night before. Enjoy the Summer and your strawberries and don’t forget to come and meet me at the Big Lunch in Chipping Sodbury on 6 June.

I’ve called this recipe “Longlasting syllabub” because unlike some syllabubs it keeps very well without splitting. It will keep for up to 3 days in the fridge, but for maximum flavour eat by the next day. Of course it is a contradiction in terms because once you’ve made it, it WON’T last long because everyone will want to eat it! NB: making the first stage of dissolving the sugar into the wine etc is best done if possible the night before, but if you forget, a few hours will be OK Makes 6-8 small individual glasses. Ingredients: For the syllabub • 150ml/4fl oz Muscat dessert wine (You can use ordinary white wine, just add an extra tablespoon of sugar.) • 2 tbsp brandy or chosen liquer • 1 lemon, zest and juice • 50g/2oz caster sugar • Pinch freshly grated nutmeg • For 300ml/ ½ pint double cream • For the fruit compote Use your favourite fruits of the season eg • 175g/6oz young rhubarb in the Spring time, or fresh blood orange segments • 175g raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries,

peaches, blackcurrants in the Summer • 175g/6oz plums, damsons or pears in the Autumn/Winter • 50g/2oz caster sugar • 12-16 basil/mint leaves to decorate • White chocolate curls-optional Here’s what you do: Prep the syllabub base and the compote the night before. For the syllabub, place the dessert wine, brandy, lemon zest and juice and sugar in a small bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave overnight. Prepare the fruit compote by putting the fruit in a microwaveable bowl with the sugar. Cook on High for 3-4 mins

until the fruit is just cooked, but still has a bit of ‘bite ‘to it. Put to one side and allow to cool completely. Cover with cling film and refrigerate. Next day, finish the syllabub. Strain the liquid into a large bowl and add a large pinch of nutmeg. Pour in the cream in a steady stream and beat with a handheld electric whisk until it just holds its shape, being careful not to overbeat or it will curdle. Assembling the dessertusing a small glass, put a layer of chosen fruit at the bottom of the glass, then carefully put scoops of the syllabub on top. Decorate with a little extra fruit and a pair of basil/mint leaves or white chocolate if using.

Rotarians give cash boost to MS centre MUCH needed apparatus has been bought to help people with multiple sclerosis, thanks to Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club. The Cactus proves a sharp operator Richard Drew takes the Citreon C4 Cactus through its paces and finds a car that’s sharp on the inside and soft on the outside. Automatic for the people might be the title of a REM album, but Citroen could have had it in mind when they were thinking about the Cactus. It might be that they want to make life easy for the driver, or perhaps they’re leaving as little to chance as possible, but they’re doing everything they can to help us. The lights come on automatically, so do the windscreen wipers, and unless you really want to tinker you can leave the air-con to its own devices. The Cactus is a typical Citroen car, full of innovative thinking, some of it more useful than others. The French company also likes to coin a phrase for their thinking. Take the ‘Magic Wash’; in other words putting the windscreen washer nozzle on the wiper rather than the bonnet. The company claims it saves 50% of the water spayed onto the screen. Clever, and simple, and it’s the same kind of thinking that makes you warm to the interior. There are leather strap door handles, inspired the sales patter tells us, by high end luggage. It also claims that it’s part of a

harmonious interior design that let’s us connect with our ‘inner calm’. I’m not so sure about that, it is a car after all. Still, my 9 year old loved the handles, and the general design of the inside is clever. Take the passenger airbag, situated behind the sun visor in the roof. This allows the glove compartment to be less bulky, and a lot more stylish. It’s not all good news inside. The front arm rest is so long that it’s a struggle to use the handbrake, and awkward to change gear. Just as well it pulls up out of the way. But there is much more to get excited about. The 7 inch entertainment system continues the theme of extra help with a reversing camera as well as the sat nav, phone sync, MP3 connection, and digital radio (at last, the chance to listen to BBC 6 Music on the move!). The cruise control includes a pause button, which allows you to slow and then resume your speed, as well as a speed limiter which is helpful through motorway speed cameras. Given the automatic tendencies of the car, it would have been nice to drive an automatic version for

the Cactus, rather than the 5 speed manual I had. Those selling the Catcus are keen to burnish its eco credentials. I was given a petrol model to try, which might be a sensible option, given a possible future clampdown on diesel vehicles in cities. It also has a stop and start system for when you are at a standstill. The ride is smooth, the steering responsive, and although it may not nock your socks off like high end cars, it is certainly a contender for those of us without a huge budget. A lot of what I found in the top of the range Flair model is in higher end cars, but the cost of the Cactus, from just under £13,000 to just over £18,000 makes it very good value for money. There is one more thing

Town set to rock at two-day music festival YATE’S popular community music festival has been given a new name as it celebrates a landmark anniversary. The event, to be held in Kingsgate Park, is now called Yate Rocks! and organisers hope it will bring in crowds of people to match last year’s record of 6,500 visitors. It is ten years since the first festival was staged, becoming an instant hit in the town and surrounding area. This year it will run over the weekend of June 20 and 21, with tribute band the Mangledwurzels headlining the Saturday programme. A series of local bands will also feature during the day, including Limited Edition, Skeeter, Goodnight Lois, Uncle Buck, Hitshot, Tundra and

Progress is Made. They will be supported by dance groups such as Stagecoach, Glitterbugs, Pure Dance, Redds Dance Group and Street Cred. Other entertainment ranges from football games, sideshows and children’s fun rides to giant inflatables, gymnastics demonstrations and cheerleaders. Locally produced arts and crafts will be on display and a beer tent will be run by Wickwar Brewing Company. Families will also have the chance to get close to a fire engine from the local station. Events on Saturday will run from midday to 8pm, with Sunday’s schedule opening with a Praise in the Park event, when local churches will provide an outdoor service from 10.30am to

noon. It will be followed by an afternoon picnic from 2pm, with music provided by the Westerly Showband and the Got2Sing choirs. Yate councillor John Ford, chairman of the events committee, said: “We are delighted that the music festival has reached its tenth anniversary. “What started as a small community music event has evolved into a much loved and well supported annual gathering of the community. “We very much hope the weather will be kind to us again this year so that we can celebrate in style within the halcyon and beautiful surroundings of Kingsgate Park.”

to discuss about this car; the exterior. That is when we have a ‘marmite moment’. The strange bubble wrap effect on the side of the car, often highlighted in a different colour is known in Citroen speak as ‘Airbump’. It really is like a high tech bubble wrap, air pockets protecting your doors from bumps and scrapes. It really divides opinion, some loving it as a feature, some much less so. It all fits in with Citroen’s aim of making life easier (and cheaper) for you, but there are those for whom it is a deal breaker. I suspect they will turn their attention in the showroom to the funkier DS3. For the record, my 9 year old wasn’t a fan of the Airbump, but then she’s not the ones paying the body shop bill.

Ancient custom helps Yate residents remember common’s boundaries THE ancient custom of beating the bounds was held on Yate Common, with local families and town mayor Wully Perks joining in the ceremony. Members of the Friends of Yate Common group and Yate rector, the Rev Ian Wallace, also took part in the event, which involved walking the boundaries of the open space. The ceremony is traditionally held on Rogation Sunday to teach children and remind other locals about the boundaries of their locality.

T: 01454 800 127 34 yate&sodburyvoice www.yateandsodburyvoice.co.uk Chilli Morning’s warm glow of success at Badminton reflects on Chipping Sodbury rider THE most prestigious prize in eventing returned to British hands when William Fox-Pitt secured victory on Chilli Morning at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. A finish that went right to the wire had thousands of spectators gripped on the last of four days of close competition. Lying second after the dressage and cross-country phases, William clinched his second Badminton title – 11 years after his first - by going clear in the deciding showjumping stage when many others faulted. Later he was quick to praise Chipping Sodbury’s Nick Gauntlett for a six-year involvement in the success of the horse – the first stallion to win Badminton. Nick had originally found Chilli Morning, rode him in his early career and got him to the highest four-star level of the sport, including completing Burghley in 2011, before the owners moved the horse initially to Mary King and then to the Fox-Pitt yard. The new Badminton champion said: “Nick deserves all the credit. He’s done a brilliant job with Chilli and I’ve been very lucky to take on the horse, who’s obviously now got a good chance of being selected for the Rio Olympics.” Nick said: “I’m delighted for William and Chilli, who is such a lovely horse.” Nick’s own Badminton didn’t pan out as hoped. He withdrew Crown Talisman when the horse

developed a high temperature and although completing the dressage with the less experienced El Grado, decided against running him across country. However, he was presented with a coveted Armada Dish, given the year after a rider completes Badminton for the fifth time. As one of the UK’s biggest sporting events, Badminton attracted huge crowds – most turning out to watch the testing cross-country challenge. New Zealander Andrew Nicholson had led with Nereo after the dressage and

Sam Griffiths (AUS) riding Paulank Brockagh on the cross country at Badminton. Photo: Mitsubishi Motors/Kit Houghton

maintained his position after going across country, leaving him “still living the dream” of a much wanted victory. But last to go in the showjumping as the tension mounted, a costly three fences down meant he has now completed Badminton a record 35 times but still hasn’t won. The errors dropped Nereo to sixth place while his stablemate, Calico Joe, just missed a top 20 finish. Germany’s Ingrid Klimke was runner-up with Horseware Hale Bob after a “wonderful” cross-country ride and a clear showjumping round, while past

winner Jock Paget was third with Clifton Lush and his Kiwi teammate, Mark Todd, was fourth on Leonidas II. Bettina Hoy was fifth for Germany on Designer 10 and Nicola Wilson was the highest placed British woman - seventh with One Two Many. She also completed with Beltane Queen. Last year’s champion, Sam Griffiths, was tenth on Paulank Brockagh. A showjumping disaster for Oliver Townend, third after cross-country with Armada, dropped them to 11th place.

June, 2015

TRADERS reported brisk business at Badminton, with spectators making the most of five days of shopping. Many among the huge crowds at the international took some time away from the sporting action to browse and buy. Well known brands, rural crafts, national traders and local businesses combined to offer

plenty of choice in the tented village. They included Badminton regulars Paul and Wendy Baber, of Badminton Road, Coalpit Heath, whose Style products are favourites with many of the leading riders. Paul said: “It’s been brilliant, really busy for us.”

Badminton spectators EVENTER Oliver Townend earned a big cheer when he borrowed an Avon and Somerset police horse for the traditional parade of competitors in the closing stages of the trials. Some of the riders’ own horses aren’t suited to the noisy atmosphere when competitors are introduced to the grandstand crowd of 13,600 ahead of the deciding showjumping phase. So Oliver temporarily abandoned his well placed Armada for calm police horse Lewis – one of the force’s four-legged crime fighters at the showground during the event – as his conveyance for the procession.

Meanwhile, eventual winner William Fox-Pitt and past victor Paul Tapner commandeered a Beaufort hunt horse to ride in the parade, while Bettina Hoy hopped onto a borrowed pony for her turn around the arena. Elsewhere on the site, Avon Fire and Rescue Service showed how it rescues horses and other animals. In the year to March 2015, the service attended nearly 150 incidents involving animals, including being called out to free trapped horses. Fire crews undergo special training to deal with large animals and use a model horse when learning how best to deal with equine rescues.

T: 01454 800 127 36 yate&sodburyvoice A promising season draws to a close for Yate Town

www.yateandsodburyvoice.co.uk

A 3-1 victory over bottom club Bashley brought Yate Town’s season to a close, a result that confirmed that they ended in sixth position, just one place outside the play-offs. Merthyr Town, already confirmed as divisional champions will be joined in the Premier Division by play-off winners Stratford Town, who finished the season in third spot. Following promotions and relegations, three new teams will visit Lodge Road in the league next season. Slimbridge, promoted from the Western League, will be joined by Petersfield Town the Wessex League champions, and Banbury United, relegated from the Premier Division. West Bashley and Bishops Cleeve, the bottom two teams in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division 1 South have both been reprieved whilst Sholing have returned to the Wessex League due to ground grading issues.

The new season begins on 8th August, and Yate will shortly announce their full programme of pre-season friendly matches. At a very well attended Presentation Evening held in the Clubhouse, Jake Cox was presented with the Bill Weekes Memorial Shield after being voted as Supporter’s Player of the Season following a very close vote. First Team Player’s Player was won by goalkeeper Martin Horsell, whilst the other award winners were: Youth Team Players Player Tom Norley Reserve Team Players Player Callum Hackers Young Sportsman Callum Ball Fred Nicholls Memorial Cup Jason Rees Clubman of the Year “Herbie” Newman W.A. Promotion form continues in summer league for Puckle

Chipping Sodbury Town FC has been elected to the Toolstation Western League. Ground redevelopment and improvement in facilities as well as a strong performance on the pitch impressed the league’s assessment team and the club will now install floodlights and an additional stand, providing seating for 50, before the 2015-16 season begins. “We are absolutely delighted for everyone involved in the club and this news gives all of our younger players a real incentive to develop their footballing careers in their home town’ commented Club Chairman Mike Fox. When the new seasons kicks off in August the club will sit just six layers below the Football League.

Still on a high from the news of promotion to Division One next season, the Pucklechurch girls were buzzing for Summer league to start. Beaming sunshine greeted us at Wellsway School in Keynsham for our first fixture against Keynsham 1st’s. After having over a months rest or so, it was a bit of a start-stop beginning with a few passes going astray and players bunching around the ball. However, the Puckle girls soon got in the flow of things and started playing their game. With more accurate passing, lots of calling and great teamwork the goals would soon start coming. Last seasons top goal scorer Sophie Edwards continued her ways, hitting the backboard twice and one from Rhian ‘Leopard’ Phillips would see the final score line 3-0 to Pucklechurch. A great start to the Summer! Next up, the girls in royal blue and gold faced opponents Knowle 1st’s. Again, beautiful sunshine met us as we all

limbered up ready to take them on. Having not lost a game since January, the determination not to lose grows with every game! Pucklechurch got off to a storming start and within the first 10 minutes a long ball into the D from Laura Stone would see Sophie Edwards get a touch on it and deflect it past the goalie. This would be the first of many goals. Next up, a cracking strike from Phillips from a short corner. The 3rd goal would be provided from Amy Davidge after a rebound from the goalies pads. We started the 2nd half off a bit scrappily but soon sorted this out and took control of the game. With superb shadowing from Tina Scammell and Laura

Davidge, and tight marking from everyone, Knowle found it difficult to break through. With forwards connecting well with the halves and wing Emily Pollock making storming runs down the right wing more goals soon followed. A short corner, brilliantly executed from Laura Stone followed by another from Sophie Edwards saw us 5-0 up. Amy Dav got her 2nd of the game - somehow fumbling it over the line. Captain Lisa Whitehead was then denied a goal from a belting short corner strike. Final whistle 6-0 to Pucklechurch. Pucklechurch Ladies are based at the Winterbourne International Academy where they play their home matches on a Saturday morning and train on a Monday night. We welcome all players of all abilities, so why not pop along and check us out.

Michael Johnathan Boulton 3rd. October 1941 to 12th. March 2015 Mike was affectionately known as ‘Jumbo’ to all of his friends. He was born and raised in Chipping Sodbury and attended school in the town, as a matter of fact everything ‘Jumbo’ did was for Chipping Sodbury. He was a keen sportsman and played cricket, squash, golf, rugby and badminton but his greatest love was Chipping Sodbury Town Football Club. When his playing days were over he became heavily involved in the running of the club and held positions on the club committee including his latest and longest as Club Treasurer. Ill health made its unwelcome visit to Mike at the beginning

of the Millennium when he was diagnosed with Diabetes. He then had both hips replaced and operations on his upper and lower spine areas then interfered with his mobility. He suffered several cardiac arrests. and passed away after a heart attack in March. Chipping Sodbury Town will be a much poorer place now that the last of the Boulton’s has gone.

Golfing success for Sodbury students FOUR students from Chipping Sodbury School finished in third place in the Avon Schools Golf Championships. The team of Adam Blue, Tom Melling, Alfie Waller and Harry Waller beat schools such as Clifton College, Bristol Grammar School, QEH and Wellsway along

the way to their success. Their PE teacher Jonathan Bowden said: “I was amazed by the standard of golf being played by such young players and the mental strength they displayed throughout the whole competition.”

June, 2015

Old Sodbury wrapped up their debut season in the Avon Youth League with a fine run of form. Three wins and a draw in April helped them to fourth place and a very successful 10 wins from 16 league matches overall. Their final game of the season at unbeaten league champions Bromley Heath ended in a creditable score draw with Old Sodbury Boys leading 2-0 until the very end, a mark of how far they have come in one single season. At the clubs end of season awards ceremony, Dan Liddiatt

left with the Chairman’s Award, skipper Josh Pearce the Players’ Player of the Year, Dan Watson the Manager’s Player of the Year and Ross Womack secured the Golden Boot with a magnificent 27 goals. Training will begin for Old Sodbury next season’s under 15s campaign towards the end of July and new players are always welcome. For details, contact Damian Frodsham on 07947 763554 or via Twitter (@ OldSodYFC).

Competition hots up at Castle Combe A large crowd turned out at Castle Combe on Bank Holiday Monday at the start of May for the second race day of 2015. With the afternoon’s racing being screened live on Motors TV, competitors were keen to race in front of the cameras and give good exposure to their sponsors. The circuit’s Saloon Car Championship had 41 cars on the grid for the start of their race and even had reserves on standby. Stonehouse’s Bill Brockbank was the highest placed local

competitor, bringing his Seat Ibiza Cupra home in 5th place. Bristol’s Mark Wyatt took the Class B win in his Vauxhall Astra, finishing a credible 6th overall. Wyatt now leads the Championship after two rounds. Joining the Saloon Car Championship were the circuit’s other two home series, the Formula Ford 1600 and Sports & GT Championships. The visiting series included Classic FF1600, MG Owners Club, Historic and Classic Saloon cars.

CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club hope to start hitting their straps after getting the new season off to a slow start. A new-look first XI, competing in the Gloucester division of the West of England Premier League, battled hard without much luck in the opening rounds of games but a host of products from the club’s youth section are finding their feet and are keen to progress. Sodbury 2nd’s meanwhile have enjoyed a mixed start although skipper Jerry Swatton rolled back the years with a century in a fine victory over Winsley and 57 the following weekend in a derby setback against Rockhampton. Chipping Sodbury 3rd’s, up against mainly first XI’s in Division Three of the Bristol & District League, have responded strongly to this new challenge following promotion last season. Teenager Jack Thacker’s burst of 4-19 from 12 overs was crucial to a superb six-wicket win away to University Staff. Dan Morgan turned in arguably the leading individual display of the season so far, taking 5-37 from 12 and following up with an unbeaten 50, in a narrow reverse against Pucklechurch. Sodbury 4th’s immediately made their presence felt in Division Nine with Harry Phillips taking 5-22 in an excellent fivewicket win against Bristol Lions. He followed up with a burst of 4-19, helping lay the foundations for a two-wicket derby defeat of Hambrook. Chipping Sodbury 5th’s, promoted last year to Division Ten, are once again acting as the very important first step on the ladder to senior cricket. With a

side composed mainly of youth team players they are confident of making an impression as the summer progresses. Players of all ages and abilities welcome to attend the senior practice which takes place at the Ridings every Thursday from 6.15pm.
