Pharmacy signs up for Yate healthy living project PEOPLE in south Yate are getting an extra service from a local pharmacy that is aimed at improving their health.

Abbotswood Pharmacy has just become part of a pilot project that involves staff forging even better links with their customers and helping them lead healthier lifestyles.

Under the scheme, they are being pro-active with information and displays about various aspects of health and showing how it can be blighted by lifestyle decisions.

With the Abbotswood area having poorer health outcomes than many other parts of South Gloucestershire, it is hoped the Healthy Living Pharmacy scheme will play a role in changing that.

Pharmacist Ade Williams said the scheme had only started this summer in Abbotswood but it was a long term project that was already having an effect on customers.

His team were especially keen to drive home the message to children as they learned about healthy living early and in turn

could influence their parents to make changes.

Off to Rio - the Frampton Cotterell woman who is supporting the GB Paralympics team A woman from Frampton Cotterell is flying to Rio de Janeiro in a trip of a lifetime to support Britain’s Paralympians. Claire Bohr will be part of the medical support team, and here she tells The Voice about how she got to go to Rio.

I AM a paediatric specialist nurse working in Bristol Childrens hospital for 30 years. Caring for children with bowel defects and disorders.

I initially got involved with Paralympic sport through a work colleague who introduced me to the sport of wheel chair rugby in 2010. I volunteered as a career, helper, nurse with the Gb development squad, attended weekend training session several times a year. Following London 2012 games a position became available to join the elite squad which I have been with ever since. I work full time for the NHS so I use my holiday and unpaid leave to continue to support the wheelchair rugby team and British Paralympic association.

I have been inspired by the determination and dedication of Paralympic athletes they are 100% focused to their chosen sport and work extremely hard to overcome personal disabilities to achieve their goal. Whereas an able body athlete takes time to prepare before a training session or competition the disabled athletes takes up to twice as long to achieve the same outcomes.

This has sometimes meant

getting up at 4.30am to help an athlete prepare to be able to start playing at 9.00am.

During the Rio games I will be working with the GB team of sports medicine and sport science professional within the Olympic village. This is a team consisting of 3 nurses, 2 doctors, 2 physios, and a sports phycologist who will all be supporting the 258 GB athletes 24/7 Sport and health is very unpredictable so we have to be prepared to deal with any injury, any eventuality, any time of day. That’s what makes the job so interesting and at times challenging.

Like the athletes we have been preparing for many months to be able to deliver a top class service to the team I have mixed emotions now it’s getting closer, I am extremely proud to have been picked for the team and to be given the opportunity to experience the Paralympic games in Rio. I would like to be able to experience and embrace the countries culture as well as watching some of the events if I get any down time , but this can only be decided once we have arrived and settled in.

Please give a thought when watching the Paralympics how much preparation as well as training is required to enable that individual to perform.

They do not want pity, but respect as an elite athlete representing their country.

Pupils and schools celebrate success in GCSE exams BRIMSHAM Green School in Yate expects its GCSE results to put it above the national average for the second year running.

The school said of 195 pupils who sat GCSE and other vocational exams, 57 per cent attained at least five good GCSE or equivalent passes, including in the core subjects of English and maths.

This year’s top achiever was Madeline Prottey, who got A* grades in 11 exams.

Head teacher Kim Garland said: “For students to have attained another fantastic set of results, which at this stage we anticipate being above the national average again, fairly

reflects both the hard work of the students and the sustained improvement of the school.”

Chipping Sodbury School also saw 57 per cent of pupils get the benchmark five GCSEs at grade C or higher, including maths and English - a rise of six per cent.

Achieving five or more of the highest A and A* grades went to 15 per cent of the cohort.

Millington said he was delighted for the students who had worked so hard for their results.

Yate International Academy said it had “dramatically” increased its progress score, with pupils doing better than expected nationally.

It said advances in English resulted in three quarters of students gaining the expected level and there were good

results in many of the other core subjects that counted towards the English Baccalaureate.

Geography and history had a nearly 70 per cent A-C pass rate and French achieved 75 per cent.

What a tonic - family’s award winning gin to be served up at food and drink festival THE countdown has started for the annual food and drink festival in Chipping Sodbury, with an award winning gin made by four brothers and sisters among the specialities to be featured.

Sibling Gin was developed in Gloucestershire by the young Elliott-Berry team of Digby, Felix, Clarice and Cicely, who started their state-of-the-art distillery in 2014.

Their product is now stocked throughout Europe and on sale in top stores such as Fortnum and Mason as well as Harvey Nichols.

They will be in Henry’s Cocktail Lounge on Friday, September 9, at 6.30pm and 8pm, as well as on a stall in the town centre on Saturday, September 10 from 10am-4pm.

Lower speed limit planned for approach road to Yate primary school THE speed limit on a Yate road is set to be cut to 20mph to make it safer for children going to and from school.Wellesley Primary School is sited at the end of a culde-sac in Edgeworth, where there is currently a 30mph restriction for traffic.

But South Gloucestershire Council wants to reduce it, in line with its policy for all schools in the district, wherever possible, to be in a 20mph zone.

It said drivers travelling at a lower speed not only improved road safety for vulnerable users but also made walking and cycling to school a more attractive option.

A consultation exercise is running until September 15 for people to have their say about the proposal, which will involve all roads within the Edgeworth housing estate being covered by the speed limit.

Healthy Living scheme adopted by Yate pharmacy to improve people’s health A PILOT project at a Yate pharmacy is helping to improve the health of people living in the community it serves.

Abbotswood Pharmacy is one of a small group of chemists in South Gloucestershire to be included in the Healthy Living Pharmacy scheme.

The aim is for staff to promote healthier lifestyles among its customers, often setting up displays within the premises to get the message across.

Pharmacist Ade Williams said the scheme was a nationwide project but had only recently been started in Abbotswood.

He said: “Those pharmacies chosen to be part of the scheme do not get any additional funding but individually offer

to pro-actively work in their communities to bring about positive health outcomes and tackle lifestyle choices that blight the health of their patients.”

Mr Williams said the Abbotswood area had one of the worst health outcomes in Yate.

There were also high rates of diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure throughout the town, with some people’s problems made worse by smoking, consuming higher than recommended levels of alcohol and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Choices made by adults affected the health of children and young adults and while working with local GPs to promote healthier living, the

He said: “As the pressure on GP practices increase, pharmacies are educating local populations by showing how we can help with a range of conditions, while increasing awareness of the wide variety of available but badly publicised services available at no cost to them from their local pharmacies.”

Mr Williams said engaging displays were already catching the attention of customers, with children even pointing them out to their parents and learning at a young age how their health could

Some were not so appealing - such as showing what a cancerous lung looked like - but had a powerful message to put over.

By speaking with customers who might have a health problem worsened by factors such as poor heating at home, the pharmacy staff were also able to point them towards other help.

Mr Williams said Yate Town Council and the Abbotswood Action Group were involved in working to improve the physical environment of the Abbotswood shopping centre and his pharmacy was now working to create a healthier community.

Kennel cough Kennel Cough, also known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis, is a condition in dogs causing chronic coughing. It isn’t just spread in kennels, but is a highly infectious disease that can affect any dog.

Kennel Cough is caused by the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica, the viruses Canine Parainfluenza, and Canine Adenovirus 2 (CAV-2), as single agents or in combination.

Any situation where multiple dogs are coming into close contact, particularly if dogs keep coming and going, is ideal for spreading the disease. Such situations include: Rescue centres, Boarding kennels, Pet shops, Dog groomers and Dog shows.

However, any dog is potentially at risk, as all three major organisms can survive long enough in the environment to spread between dogs on footpaths, in parks or other public spaces.

The most obvious clinical sign is a persistent ‘hacking’ cough, due to irritation of the windpipe and larynx, this is often followed by retching or gagging or bringing up clear fluid. Other than this, dogs usually appear almost normal, except perhaps

for a reduced appetite, and being slightly off colour or lethargic.

Occasionally the primary infection allows a secondary pneumonia to develop, with high fever, difficulty breathing, collapse and dehydration. This is more serious and requires prompt treatment.

In many cases, the condition is self-limiting and will go away on its own. However, the cough may persist for up to three weeks. We use anti- inflammatory medication as a symptomatic treatment and occasionally anti biotics to suppress Bordetella infections, as well as preventing a more serious secondary infection.

There is a widely used vaccine that is given up the nose (Bordetella combined with Parainfluenza). It lasts a year and reduces both the risk of infection and the severity, but does not give complete protection to all dogs. The Canine adenovirus is covered in the core vaccines by injection.

If you think your dog may have kennel cough, ring us for advice. Remember it is a highly contagious condition, but the risk of transmission is massively reduced in vaccinated dogs.

Memory cafe to open in link-up between Baptist church and Rotary club A NEW service is about to be launched in Chipping Sodbury for people with memory problems or dementia.

The town’s Baptist church has developed the Oasis Memory Cafe in conjunction with Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

Volunteers from the organisations, who have the support of the Alzheimer’s Society, will run the cafe at the church once it opens on Tuesday, September 20.

It will then be a regular feature every first and third Tuesday from 10.30am-noon,

giving people affected by the condition, their friends, family and carers the chance to meet in informal surroundings.

The cafe will be free to attend.

Cash awards waiting to reward church community schemes ANGLICAN churches in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area just have time to enter a competition to recognise their community schemes and bid for a share of £20,000.

The contest is being run to find church-run ideas and projects that have helped local communities., from food co-operatives and lunch clubs to language classes for the vulnerable.

There is a top prize of £10,000 and five other prizes each of £2,000 - the money put up by insurance company Ecclesiastical.

Youth cafe launches new Skill sharing programme for the autumn volunteers needed in Yate for have-a-go library event A NEW autumn programme of events at the Armadillo youth cafe in Yate runs from September, with sport, music and movies in the schedule.

During the summer, the venue offered street dance workshops, cookery classes and a range of craft activities.

Yate Rotary Club also funded new garden furniture, games and other equipment.

Some of the autumn sessions are designed for those aged between ten and 12, including sports activities, music mixing and the screening of films in the cafe’s own cinema.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help share their skills with children at a junior have-a-go event in Yate library The session is aimed at introducing new hobbies and crafts to youngsters aged between seven and 11.

Tour of Britain to ride through Chipping Sodbury BRITAIN’S premier cycle race will include a stage that sweeps through Chipping Sodbury.

Stage 5, on Thursday 8 September, will start in Aberdare in Wales and end up in Bath.

The riders will come from Gloucester and through Wickwar before heading to Wapley and the Westerleigh Road, before passing the crematorium and heading to Pucklechurch and the finale in Bath.

The day will include a total of 194.5 kilometres of riding and 3,292m of climbing.

The riders are expected to arrive in Wickwar at around 14.43, before riding through Chipping Sodbury at 14.53.

They should arrive at the Westerleigh Road by 15.01.

DRIVERS have been warned of a series of rolling road closures when top cyclists sweep through Chipping Sodbury and surrounding areas in the Tour of Britain.

As reported in last month’s Yate and Sodbury Voice, the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, fresh from their Rio Olympics success, will race past crowds of spectators on Thursday, September 8.

Exact times have not been given but it is expected some 120 cyclists will go through nearby Wotton-under-Edge before heading through Kingswood, Wickwar and along the B4060

into Chipping Sodbury.

The route will take them up High Street, down Culverhill Road, past Chipping Sodbury School and out to Wapley, Westerleigh Crematorium and through Pucklechurch to Bath for an estimated 3.30pm finish.

It’s a jungle out there in Tim’s sub-tropical Yate garden YATE’S award winning jungle garden is about to be opened to visitors as part of a nationwide charity scheme.

Beechwell House in Goose Green is home to sub-tropical plants that have been tended for more than two decades by Tim Wilmot.

Despite the suburban setting, the unusual garden has thrived in the British weather and been admired by many people on previous open days.

Now regular supporters of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) and new visitors have the chance to see palms, tree ferns, bamboos and bananas on Sunday, September 11, when the garden is open from 1pm-5pm.

Beechwell House’s back garden consisted of just an old orchard, patio and beech hedge when Mr Wilmot and his family moved in during 1990.

Gradually, as a lawn for the children to play on was no longer needed, exotic plant species

started to arrive and the garden developed.

As well as the plants, there are also two ponds - one for Koi and the other for wildlife - and the 16th century well that helped give the house its name.

Mr Wilmot’s efforts have also resulted in the garden being featured in local and national newspapers, on TV and in a book on inspirational gardens.

Admission for the open afternoon is £3.50, with no fee for children. Home-made teas will be available.

Money raised through the NGS supports a number of nursing charities, including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK and the Carers Trust.

Sowing seeds of hopeful success to bring colour to nature reserve meadow WILDFLOWER seeds from one part of the Wapley Bushes nature reserve have been transplanted in an effort to improve a meadow within the site.

The seeds were collected from the herb-rich Lower Meadow and spread over Upper Meadow, where it is hoped they will germinate.

If the scheme is a success, the area should produce a stunning display of flowers.

The nature reserve on the edge of Yate is managed by the Wapley Bushes Conservation Group on behalf of Dodington Parish Council, which owns the land.

Group member Tim Fairhead said: “We’re working on a project to improve the biodiversity of Upper Meadow.

“Lower Meadow is spectacular when the flowers are in bloom. When the grass was cut

we collected some sacks of the cuttings, complete with seeds.

We raked our target area and then spread the cuttings on it so that the seeds can take root.”

The group’s chairwoman, Isabel Ryan, said: “I took some

of the grass home and spread it out to dry. It was surprising just how many seeds were produced and hopefully they will germinate next spring, when we’ll come back to see how much of a difference we’ve made.”

Parish councillor Paul Hulbert, who is also a regular volunteer at the reserve, said: “This is just one of the projects we are undertaking to improve the area for the local community.

“We always welcome visitors and new volunteers. Our next public event will be a family bat walk at 7.30pm on Friday, September 9. Bat walks are always popular with families as children love exploring in the dark.”

Eddie defies the odds to drive again and help stroke survivors get back on the road BUSINESSMAN Eddie Ruskin showed determination to walk and drive again after two strokes and a brain haemorrhage threatened to rob him of both skills.

Doctors also told him he would be unable to work again.

But within weeks, Eddie, of Chipping Sodbury, was walking with a stick and just five months after being taken ill, he was assessed as being safe to drive.

By the end of 2015, the fatherof-two was back at work, having passed a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) advanced driving test and then passing the Institute of Advanced Drivers test with a distinction.

Now Eddie, 47, is helping other stroke survivors get back on the road by sharing his experiences and offering advice.

Eddie, who runs a specialist fibreglass repair and construction business at Dynamic Mouldings in Mayshill, Frampton Cotterell, suffered his strokes at work when he was just 45.

He was unable to use his hands to make a call on his mobile phone but managed to get help and was taken to hospital, only to suffer the brain haemorrhage a fortnight later.

But his cognitive skills were

not harmed, resulting in him learning to first walk again and then return to driving.

Cars have played a big part in Eddie’s life, through his work and in his spare time. He was racing just the day before he was taken ill.

He said: “I was told that I would never walk, drive or work again. Life as I knew it was over.

“Only 30 per cent of stroke survivors ever drive again but two months later I was walking with a stick and five months on I was deemed safe to drive.

“Focusing on driving again

has really helped me battle back to health. As my car is modified for one-handed driving, I would be lost if it was stolen. It has become so much more than just a car.”

Eddie was advised to get a stolen vehicle recovery device fitted to help police trace and recover his car if it was ever taken and, in recognition of his work to help others, the company Tracker offered to fit one in his specialist vehicle.

Adrian Davenport, the business’s police liaison manager, said: “Eddie’s

determination means that he’s made a remarkable recovery, allowing him to get back on the road and now he is working with other stroke survivors to help them drive again.”

Eddie, whose wife Karen and daughters Diana, 18, and Lesley, 15, have given him support in his recovery and rehabilitation, said: “I’m now on a mission to show people that there is life after a stroke. It was devastating when it happened and it’s been hard since but life is totally worth it.”

Further effort by house builders to develop landlocked Yate site turned down by planners A THIRD attempt by developers to build homes on a site in Yate has failed after planners rejected their latest application.

Woodstock Homes first applied last year for consent to demolish a bungalow in Cambrian Drive in order to gain access to a landlocked piece of ground, where the company wanted to put 18 homes.

But South Gloucestershire Council turned down the proposal, leading to Woodstock appealing against the ruling.

An inspector appointed to hear the evidence dismissed the appeal but earlier this year,

Woodstock re-submitted the scheme, saying it had addressed the inspector’s concerns.

However, South Gloucestershire Council has again thrown it out, repeating its view that it would result in “significant and demonstrable harm” and failed to reach the highest possible standards of site planning and design.

Yate Town Council also claimed the application was “a mockery of the planning system” as the proposal had previously been rejected at the appeal.

It opposed the development “strongly” and said: “This is a

well-used piece of open space which has been used integrally with the adjoining open land for 35 years. It is essential to keep it open.”

One of the key issues behind the refusal was access to the site.

A South Gloucestershire Council report said the proposed route in and out would affect an existing car-free public right of way to the rear of the site.

It said that impact would also be felt over a wide area as the right of way had significant links to other housing developments nearby and routes to community facilities and services.

A planning statement prepared by the Pegasus Group, on behalf of Woodstock, had claimed there would be a “convenient, attractive access” for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities.

It also said there would be “very limited inconvenience” to the users of an existing cycleway/ footway that crossed the access route as a “living street” concept would give reduced priority to vehicles.

Fighting for better local Broadband

A

S a local man, I believe South Gloucestershire is one of the finest places to live in our country. We have excellent teachers in our local schools, dedicated nurses and doctors in our hospitals, beautiful rolling countryside and a strong local economy. We also face our own set of challenges, and ensuring that all areas of South Gloucestershire have access to a good broadband connection is one of them.

My view is that access to the internet should not be a luxury; it should be a right. I say this both as an MP and also as a local man who grew up in a rural area.

Last month I completed my summer tour, holding drop in surgeries in towns, villages and hamlets across the local area.

One of the messages that came back very clearly was; ‘broadband in some towns might be okay, but many other areas and parts of Yate are missing out.’

Some local families are struggling to access the internet send emails, and some children have been left unable to upload their homework.

There is a huge amount of money being invested to extend superfast broadband provision across the UK (£1.7 billion to be precise), and the government has assured me that by 2017, 95 per cent of the UK will be connected.

However I have not been taking these assurances blindly

at face value, I have been raising our local concerns in Parliament, directly with Ministers and meeting regularly with the Leader of South Gloucestershire Council and BT to ensure we are not forgotten.

I am therefore delighted that the rollout of local broadband will now be extended to even more communities across South Gloucestershire who will be able to take advantage of superfast fibre broadband. Rural villages like Tytherington, Hinton, Codrington and Little Sodbury are now set to be included in the second phase of broadband rollout, but also areas of Yate which had been left behind. South Gloucestershire Council and ‘Broadband Delivery UK’ are now set to upgrade Yate’s North Road cabinets and access to superfast broadband, and, by extension, local small, medium and large employers located in the nearby business parks boosting our local economy.

I am hugely grateful for all of the feedback on broadband in areas like Yate, Frampton Cotterell, Chipping Sodbury Coalpit Heath and the surrounding areas, it has helped me make the case to BT and the Council that we need invest in South Gloucestershire.

MANY students across the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area are preparing for university and apprenticeships after receiving their A-level results.

South Gloucestershire Council said the recently published exam results suggested it had been another successful year for schools in the district, with a number showing improved results on last year.

It highlighted comprehensives such as Chipping Sodbury School for having “significantly improved results” compared with 2015.

At Brimsham Green School, Yate, head teacher Kim Garland said: “Our students have made excellent progress and gained the

qualifications they deserve.

“Consequently, they are able to embark on the next exciting stage of their careers, beginning apprenticeships and taking up university places.”

Ms Garland said in matching last year’s achievement, 13 per cent of the students were awarded at least two A grades and one B grade in subjects especially valued by the leading UK universities.

She said a significant number of students had also secured sought-after apprenticeships with fully funded degrees with companies such as Renishaw and Giacomini, at Bristol Dental Hospital and with the Ministry of Defence.

How far is 10,000 steps?

Most of us have heard the advice that in order to stay fit and healthy we should aim to walk 10,000 steps each day, but just how far is 10,000 steps and how easy is it to achieve.

For the “average” person 10,000 steps works out to approximately five miles, however, this will depend on the individual’s stride length.

This will vary significantly dependant on a few factors, most obviously the length of their legs.

Now that our smartphones and watches are able to count how many steps we are taking each day many of us are aiming to reach this target, for some this is a significant change in activity levels which can be a real shock to the body.

Yate supermarket Volunteers needed for work allowed more time day at woodland for Sunday deliveries nature reserve FRIENDS of Ridge Wood are urging volunteers to help them carry out practical work at the nature reserve between Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

The conservation group will be at the tree-covered piece of land for two hours on Sunday, September 4, and hopes anyone with some spare time to get involved will turn up.

A range of activities suitable for all abilities will be undertaken, with gloves and tools provided, and people who want to be involved should meet at the Melrose Close entrance at 10am.

The tree-covered wedge of land that marks the boundary between the two towns is cared for by the Friends, who carry out conservation work and organise community activities, working with South Gloucestershire Council and site owners, Hanson Aggregates.

Forthcoming events include a free bat walk on Wednesday, September 21, at 7pm, which forms part of the annual Discover festival.

It will be led by a member of the Avon Bat Group, who will explain how to identify bat species that can be found in the reserve.

Places must be booked through the website www.ridge-wood.org. uk where details of other events can also be found.

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has been given permission to extend the time when deliveries can be made to its store in Yate on Sundays.

The change of conditions allowed by South Gloucestershire Council means up to four deliveries can now be made on Sundays from 9am-4pm - but only using the company’s own lorries.

Previously no goods could

be accepted on that day after 11.30am at the supermarket in Station Road.

Morrisons had originally asked if Sunday deliveries could be accepted from 9am-9pm but was told a 4pm cut-off would fit in with the time when stores in the area closed.

Yate Town Council had objected to the application, claiming it would result in disturbance for people living near the store.

E recently heard from a lady we know who has lived all her life in south africa.

Under previous regimes in that country she was considered to be in a minority group because of her ancestry. I often stayed with anne and her husband chris whilst on trips to the ciskei region, seeking to build relationships between the locals there

and groups in the u.K. Chris was a headmaster and ann an experienced primary school teacher. It was my privilege to go to their school and lots of others in those days and share genuine christian truths with them all.

Chris and ann never gave up the inbuilt hope that one day the peoples of their country would be united as ‘south africans together ‘ in all things. Amazingly, despite his background when the time came for a free vote, including all groups, chris was chosen to be a returning officer in the region in his words ‘the greatest honour’ he would ever gain on this earth.

So, despite all the headaches and heartaches he, his family and many others had suffered over the years, he was recog-

nised as an equal in his own land. We all know that equality can be the basis of a freely shared, honestly obtained and fulfilling lifestyle.

It would seem that aspects of life with deep significance do take time to come to fruition whatever our birthplace was or our home base is now. One thing is certain when they come we need to have remained open enough to accept them in full. I believe the one who made us all does have a timetable for each one of us.

Perhaps we all need to adopt more of a listening stance to find out what comes next?

It’s Festival time

T

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

HIS month it’s time for the Chipping Sodbury Food and Drink Festival with lots of treats to enjoy. Each year we like to bring you something new and local.

At this year’s event on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 September, it’s a cook-up from the Army chefs from RLC Regiment Reservists at Swindon. Sample the food that sustains them in the trickiest of situations.

The Chamber of Commerce organises the Festival and likes to promote new local businesses.

This year they are showcasing a 2 year old gin distillery making state of the art Sibling Gin in Cheltenham. Gin has become quite the ‘in’ drink, but not just with tonic. Distilled with cocktails in mind, their gin boasts flavours of blueberry, vanilla, orange and lemon. They’ll be demonstrating and giving samples of some of their own signature cocktails on the Friday night at the festival, first at 6.30pm and then again at 8pm in Henry’s Cocktail Lounge.

You’ll also be able to buy their special gin at the Festival the next day in the main street.

So talking of G&T, I’ve included a recipe for a G&T sorbet. This makes a great palate cleanser if you want to impress or it can be served with an oriental fruit salad of lychee, orange and papaya.

Top tip: always use premium tonic, not own brands. In the words of the advert “If ¾ of your drink is tonic, make sure it’s the best.” Poor tonic can ruin a good gin, so don’t stint on it.

Viaduct

Gin and Tonic Sorbet Makes about a litre

Ingredients: • 1 pint of water • 800grams of Caster Sugar • 200ml of Schweppes Indian Tonic Water or better still FeverTree Tonic •2 double “shaky hand” i.e. generous! measures of your favourite Gin •1 tablespoon Glucose Syrup – easily found in bakery section of Supermarket •1 lemon •1 lime Here’s what you do: . Place water and all sugar 1 in a pan and bring to a simmer then add the glucose syrup and bring to the boil – be extremely careful not to get burnt!

. Stir with a wooden spoon 2 ‘til the sugar has dissolved.

3. Then add the gin the juice (and rind of lemon if you like bits), half of lime juice and tonic water, stir in, then allow to cool, chill and freeze.

4. Because of the alcohol it will take a long time to freeze, so start the day before.

5. Then serve any way you wish either on a pretty plate or in a glass (put it in the freezer for an hour or so to chill) 6. Decorate with a thin slice of lime from leftover lime and enjoy.

Cook’s Tips As with all homemade ices or sorbets make near to the time you want to serve it for max flavour. Use within 2 months of making.

More work to be Dancing for toddlers launched at Ridgewood carried out on cycle path as calls made to maintain pressure for its completion PRE-school dance classes have started in Ridgewood Community Centre, Yate, for boys and girls.

Sessions are open to children from the age of 18 months every Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am-10.15am.

They are run by Diddi Dance from Bristol, which said lessons were in line with the early years foundation stage curriculum.

Spokeswoman Emily Norman said: “Our 45 minute sessions are action packed with songs, fun props and music to help little ones’ confidence, motor skills, socialisation, rhythm, co-ordination and much more.”

FUNDING has been allocated for further work to be carried out on the Yate spur cycle path during the current financial year.

Westerleigh councillor Claire Young said South Gloucestershire Council had secured £400,000 for the project, which comes after the recent completion of work on the section of path between Nibley Lane and the Shire Way railway viaduct.

Councillor Young said consultation was also set to start over a pedestrian refuge at the Nibley Lane junction, the path under the viaduct and the Shire

Way section.

The council was also working towards securing land for the Westerleigh Road to Broad Lane section.

But while welcoming progress, Mrs Young said more funding would be needed in future years for the construction of the path between Dodmoor Crossing and Nibley Lane.

She said: “This is arguably one of the parts of the route that will bring the biggest safety improvements. We need to keep up the pressure to make sure this important cycle route is completed.”

Changes to bus services opposed in petition to council leaders OPPONENTS claim changes to bus services will hit people from areas of South Gloucestershire who need to get to hospital, university or Parkway railway station.

The objectors launched a petition in response to the changes that bus operator First were due to introduce from Sunday, September 4, urging South Gloucestershire Council leaders to have talks with the company about the proposals.

Liberal Democrats said the changes would halve the frequency of buses from Yate to Southmead Hospital and Parkway, which go via Coalpit Heath and Frampton Cotterell.

They said those living in Chipping Sodbury and areas north of the town would also lose their direct link to the two destinations.

Westerleigh councillor Claire Young said people living in villages between Chipping Sodbury and Wotton-under-Edge would instead have to change buses in Yate, making journeys longer and more expensive.

She said: “People in our area fought long and hard to get decent buses to Southmead when Frenchay Hospital closed and now many of these services are being taken away.

“In addition, almost all the direct buses from Yate, Coalpit Heath and Frampton Cotterell to the University of the West of England will be cut, leaving just one school-time direct service per day in each direction - and that will only run on school days.”

The petition claimed that if people stopped using buses as a result of the changes and switched to cars to make their journeys, the result would be an increase in traffic and parking problems.

HAVE some good news about the Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge policing area. Usually in the summer we expect the number of crimes to increase, especially with anti-social behaviour and alcohol related violence. Fortunately we have not experienced that and crime figures appear down from the same time last year.

At night it has been very quiet and over the last few months we have received minimal calls. I

PC Dan Jones have worked hard with a number of premises that have been proactive in looking at ways to deal with potential conflict and incidents and this appears to have worked very positively. If there is information regarding any problems in this area please do let me know.

There was one concern that has been raised to me regarding vehicles driving erratically and anti-socially on St John’s Way and Wickwar Road. Since these issues have been reported I have asked the road safety vans to visit these locations later on in the evenings. All those that are driving in a fast and anti-social manner will be detected and dealt with.

I will continue to park up in these areas at problematic times and issue warnings and potentially seize cars of people who continue to disturb local residents.

OUR Granddaughter travels by train every day from Yate to Temple Meads station. The train has only two carriages and they are packed in like a lot of sardines, shoulder to shoulder.

Readers will recall the salvaged items we have acquired over the years, including the war memorial board that used to be in the old Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital and the sign from the now demolished Swan pub in Yate. Since the 1990s we have become the main repository of historic objects of all sizes.

As a result, a series of Newman Industries motors, Parnall tumble dryers, wartime artefacts, geological samples and a host of domestic items have made their way into our collections.

Pressure The pressure to collect and save important local artefacts remains acute. But their size and the space available for them presents a dilemma. Parnall washing machines, for example, are large and bulky and are stored away from the centre. The smallest of the Newman motors are heavy enough, while bigger ones require several workers to move around.

Visitors clearly like to see items on show and our policy has been to regularly change our displays to ensure as many artefacts are displayed as possible. People certainly remember the sizeable and striking, from a church pew and mining tub to Douglas motorcycles.

Festive decorators and First plan for sponsors needed for Yate’s increased storage first Christmas tree festival at Yate packaging factory approved

A SEARCH has started for sponsors for a new Christmas tree festival to be held in Yate.

St Mary’s Church will host the inaugural event in December but organisers only have a few weeks left to sign up sponsors who can decorate a tree.

It is planned to have 50 real trees in the church, with organisations such as schools and local community groups, as well as businesses, invited to get involved.

The festival is set to run over the weekends of December 9-11 and December 17-19, when the church will also be offered as a venue for seasonal music.

Mary Farrell, chairwoman of the group planning the event, said it was hoped musical groups and individuals would be able to offer evening performances on December 10, 16 and 17, while a selection of musical interludes

would be put together for lunchtimes and afternoons.

A PACKAGING company in Yate has been told it can put four more silos on its site in Station Road so it can stockpile a larger quantity of raw materials.

It is the first of two separate planning applications submitted

by Sharpak to be determined by South Gloucestershire Council.

The second, for six rather than four extra silos, will be considered later.

Sharpak already has six silos at its factory, where it produces plastic food trays and containers, and are used to store plastic pellets used in the manufacturing process.

But a supply problem has led

to the firm looking to store more of the pellets on site in order to avoid the risk of running out should deliveries be missed or held up.

It drew up one proposal to add four 50-tonne silos to the plant, which has been given consent despite objections from both Yate and Sodbury town councils.

The alternative scheme yet to be decided is for six bigger containers.

Parish leaders were concerned about the visual impact on surrounding homes of the new silos, which are proposed to go next to the existing structures.

Marks and Spencer in Yate support plans for biggest charity coffee morning M&S Yate Simply Food and Macmillan Cancer Support are teaming up for the charity’s flagship fundraising event, World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

The collaboration is now in its seventh year, and M&S Yate is calling on customers to join in and do their bit on 30 September. From the start of the month, the cafe will be donating 5p from every cup of coffee and slice of cake sold throughout September to Macmillan Cancer Support.

They said: “We are very concerned to see an increase in hate crimes across the country following the EU referendum.

“Hate crimes have no place in South Gloucestershire or anywhere else in our country and are an attack on our values as a local council and as a community.”

Thousands enjoy fun in the sun at the annual South Gloucestershire Show AN estimated 29,000 people visited the third South Gloucestershire Show, making it another hit with local families.

They enjoyed a packed programme of events that ranged from medieval jousting and motorcycle fire stunts to sheep shearing and a music festival, with organisers saying it was the biggest and best show so far.

Held at the Windmill Fisheries showground in Westerleigh, the annual show is a celebration of life in South Gloucestershire, with main arena attractions, arts and crafts, beer and food festivals and a fishing extravaganza included in this year’s two-day event.

Piglets, dogs, ducks and heavy horses were part of a country fair, together with birds of prey and parrots, while visitors could have a go at golf and shooting and see some 450 cars in a motor zone.

There were also activities for children and a display of model air balloons, while Avon and Somerset police officers, special constables, volunteer cadets, police dogs and horses were in attendance to meet the crowds and demonstrate some of the work they do.

Neighbourhood PC Finbar Simmons said officers provided crime prevention tips and joined South Gloucestershire Council’s road safety team to give out advice to road users.

Children even tried out their road safety skills by driving an electric toy car around a special course.

Meningitis Now was the nominated charity supported by the show, with information given out about its work and donations accepted throughout the weekend.

The date for the 2017 show has already been set and will take place on August 5 and 6.

Merlin secures low funding rates to help it achieve house building target SOUTH Gloucestershire housing association Merlin has secured record low rates of funding that will finance its expanding development programme.

The Chipping Sodbury-based society said the funding would support its goal of building 300 homes a year by 2019.

Its finance director, Sue O’Neill, said: “We have a strong business plan and are committed to using our financial strength to grow the business and develop new homes.”

Merlin recently posted its strongest financial results for the year to March 31, 2016, recording its highest net surplus of £10.5 million and increased its operating margin to 34 per cent.

It said it aimed to start work on site with 250 new homes this year and to complete 135 by the

end of the financial year next spring.

Merlin’s strong performance during the year also saw a reduction in tenant arrears to a record low of 0.9 per cent, best ever levels of customer satisfaction at 87 per cent and the building of 79 homes.

Merlin chairman Andrew Frayling said: “We will continue to develop homes for rent and will increase the numbers we develop for shared ownership.”

During the financial year, Merlin invested £12 million on new homes and a further £11.5 million improving its current housing stock.

It also saved £139,000 by cutting the time taken to re-let empty homes - from 30 to 22 days. It plans to bring this down to 18 days in 2016-17.

Retailer demand, good trading and new cinema gives boost to Yate Shopping Centre A RUSH of inquiries for empty units at Yate Shopping Centre means vacancy rates have fallen to a near all-time low.

In another boost for the centre, the recently opened and long-awaited Cineworld cinema, which is anchor for the new Riverside leisure complex is proving a big hit with moviegoers.

Centre manager Andy Lowrey said they were among signs of Yate’s popularity as a shopping and leisure destination.

Yate Riverside is an extension to the main shopping centre and tenants - many of them having already completed six months of trading - have reported good footfall and healthy trading.

“The response from the local community has been fantastic.

Work is currently taking place to amalgamate ground floor space with a restaurant unit and a first floor area to provide a single 20,000 sq ft unit for the retailer.

Yate man tastes success with GB blind sailing team A MAN from Yate has sailed to victory with the Great Britain Blind Sailing Team at an International regatta on Lake Garda in Italy.

Mark Austen from Yate was blinded in a road traffic accident 23 years ago but this hasn’t stopped him from competing in a sport he had already enjoyed before his accident.

Eight teams took part in the regatta with two teams representing Great Britain dominating the series of round robins over four days. Mark sailed in GB1 with Lucy Hodges MBE and took control of the Jib Sail largely operating on sound and feel.

The crews are made up of two totally Bind sailors using the acoustic sounds that mark out the triangular course and the opponents boat that makes a different noise depending on which tack they are on.

Sailing is done by feeling the

gusts and shifts in the wind and by making decisions using sound only. The B2 crews have slightly more sight but still have to sail using the sound made by the buoys.

The final saw GB1 and GB2 competing for Gold having already beaten the Italian Champions into 3rd place.

A best of 3 legs final was finally balanced at one all after two races. The race for Gold was a close run thing with less than a boat length between the two boats at the last windward mark.

GB 1 took 1st place by less than half a boat length.

Golden glow of Olympic Games shines on Chipping Sodbury THE Chipping Sodbury base of event rider Nick Gauntlett played its part in two performances at the Rio Olympics - one of them securing a gold medal.

Astier Nicolas and his horse Piaf De B’Neville put in the best performance of the victorious French eventing side that struck team gold at the Games, later adding the individual silver medal to his collection.

Nicolas had set himself up at the Gauntlett farm in early 2013 in order to prepare for his Badminton Horse Trials debut but ended up stayed on with Rio in his sights, only moving out last year.

He also achieved a degree in equine management at Hartpury College - the Gloucestershire campus of the University of the West of England.

Meanwhile, Gauntlett can take some credit for the best performing of the British eventing team horses, Chilli Morning, having found the horse as a youngster and producing the stallion to a top standard.

The horse’s owner later moved him to William Fox-Pitt, who rode him in Rio. The pair led after the opening dressage but incurred 20 penalties across country before going clear in the final showjumping.

Despite not getting a medal, it was remarkable that the rider was there at all after he suffered a serious head injury last autumn.

Earlier in 2015, Fox-Pitt won Badminton with Chilli Morning and afterwards paid tribute to the involvement of Gauntlett in the horse’s success.

Under-pressure Townend secures first victory in British Open championships

OLIVER Townend became the first home nation winner of the British Open horse trials title for five years after a high pressured ride at Gatcombe Park.

Townend went into the final cross-country phase of the championship in the lead after his dressage test and clear show jumping round on Cillnabradden Evo.

track and had to get round with no jumping penalties and few time faults to take the title for the first time.

He also had the added pressure of riding the horse that at last year’s event had fallen with Andrew Nicholson, leaving the UK-based New Zealander seriously hurt.

Although making a remarkable recovery from an injury that in 98 per cent of cases would have resulted in paralysis, Nicholson gave up riding Cillnabradden Evo. Townend took over the ride but at Gatcombe thought he had lost his lead in the closing stages due to the tiring uphill crosscountry finish.

But he completed 6.3 points ahead of France’s Thomas Carlile on Upsilon and third placed Elizabeth Power, from Ireland, on Souladoun.

Townend said: “Gatcombe is a very special place to me so this win means a lot.

“We know the horse hasn’t got great speed over distance and, although he’s very genuine, he can do the odd thick thing, so I was just trying to conserve his

Townend has an enviable record at Gatcombe in the annual Festival of British Eventing - supported by the British Equestrian Trade Association which hosts championships for novice and intermediate horses as well as the feature Open and a separate advanced class.

This year he not only won the advanced section with Dunbeau but was also second on Samuel Thomas II and fourth with Dromgurrihy Blue, ahead

of fifth placed Zara Tindall and her London 2012 silver medal winning High Kingdom.

He was also runner-up on Master Trump in the intermediate championships, where victory went to Bristol’s Alexander Whewall, recording the biggest win of his career on Chakiris Star.

The 28-year-old said: “I came here hoping for a placing, so to win in this company is just amazing.”

Yate struggle to pick up points as groundsman picks up awards AWARDS recognising the quality of the playing surface at Lodge Road have gone some way to lift team spirits at Yate Town FC following a disappointing start to the season.

Head groundsman Roger Hawkins, ably assisted by his team of volunteers, picked up two prestigious awards at the recent FA Groundsman of the Year Awards. He was named Southern League Groundsman of the Year and his hard work was further recognised when he picked up the National Groundsman of the Year title for Clubs at steps 3 and 4.

This highly prestigious award is competed for by all clubs in the Northern Premier League, Ryman (Isthmian) League and Southern League, both Premier and Regional Divisions.

Roger received both awards prior to the start of Yate’s FA Cup tie against Fleet Town, with Southern League Vice President presenting the Southern League award, and Yate manager presenting Roger with the National award.

On the much acclaimed playing surface Yate have made a very disappointing start to the season securing just one point from their opening four matches including defeat in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. A point gained at Barnstaple Town on the opening day of the season gave Yate hope, however injury and unavailability led to three defeats on the bounce all by the odd goal. Individual defensive errors and inability to take chances has been costly

and Yate will look to regroup in September and recover from this poor opening to the 2016-2017 campaign.

Athletics season in full swing for Yate and District IT’S been a busy month on the athletics track with leagues coming to a conclusion and local competitions hotting up.

In the upper age group of the Youth Development League at under-17 and under-20 level Yate & District AC is part of Team Avon. Their athletes are currently competing in the Premier Division of the League and as the Voice went to press, were top.

Excellent performances from local athletes at the Yeovil meeting fell just short as Cardiff proved too strong. Stand-out performance from a Yate athlete came from Yvette Westwood in the under-20 sprints. Her times of 12.27 in the 100m and 25.29 in the 200m were too good for the opposition.

In the men’s 400m Josh Snook and Ben Wells won both A and B races in fine style. Josh has been threatening to break the

fifty seconds barrier for a while now and he came home in 49.75 secs. Ben had to fight harder in his race but his time of 53.3 secs was good enough to win the points.

The top division of the Midland League has been on a knife edge all summer with just a few points separating Cannock, Rugby/Northampton, Stoke and Bristol/Yate.

Wins were hard to come by with Birchfield Harriers out in force and the other clubs determined to do their best.

Most impressive on the track was Yvette Westwood in the women’s sprints winning the 100m in 12.2 secs and second place in the 200m.

Adam Brooks in the high jump also triumphed for Yate with a winning height of 1.95m, close to his personal best. He came within a whisker of the magic 2m when he knocked off

the bar by the slightest touch.

In Exeter, a number of youngsters were strutting their stuff on the South West stage.

The numbers of outright winners was impressive in a fiercely competitive meet. Under 13 Luke Ball’s 4.83m leap in the long jump was enough to win the gold medal and his 1.43m in the high jump secured silver.

All rounder Jack Moore concentrated on high jump and was rewarded with a gold medal with a jump of 1.83m. He also went home with a silver medal in the 100m hurdles. There was a win for Liam Hillier in the triple jump with a new personal best.

Willa Gibb secured a national ranking for fifth when she showed her class over the 70m hurdles with a time of 11.6 secs.

The sprinters were not to be outdone and Jess Fraser gained two personal bests in the 200m (25.87 secs) and 300m (41.5 secs) gaining a silver and a gold medal. Nathaniel Mitchell won both 100m and 200m. His times of 11.67 secs and 23.4 secs demonstrated his potential.

James Viner took second in the discus and fourth in the shot.

Toby Conibear took silver in the hammer with a throw of 38.07m.

The local Avon Track and Field League is for eight local clubs and is generally hardfought over four meetings between Yate & District, Bristol & West and Team Bath. With just

one meeting to go Yate and Bath are nip and tuck ahead of the competition.

The main news of the day at the second meeting at Gloucester was of two Yate under-15 athletes. Nathaniel Mitchell joined the club less than a month ago but here he showed real class in winning both the 100m and 200m races. His times were exceptionally good for an under-15 boy, 11.4 secs in the 100m and 23.4 secs in the 200m, good enough to break the league record.

Another record was broken in the under-15 girls high jump.

Emily John broke the club record for the event with her winning jump of 1.60m, a full 12 centimetres ahead of her nearest rival.

Jack Moore in the 400m hurdles won in a time of 61.1 secs showing a good deal of promise to go with a long jump of 5.41m.

The Lodge family were much in evidence in the field events with dad Mark taking part in the hammer and the javelin He was out thrown on the javelin by son Luke, with a throw of 40.18m.

Youngest son Sam competed in the long jump.

The third meeting at Yate was disrupted by absentees however Yate athletes still had much to celebrate as there were winners on the track and field. The final match in September promises to be a tight affair.
