Bridge closure causes road rage

COUNTRY roads have been beset by "speeding, road rage and huge queues", after the closure of the main road between Yate and Bristol.

National Highways closed the Badminton Road bridge that usually carries thousands of vehicles a day over the M4, after finding "structural failures" during a safety inspection.

The bridge, next to the Wick Wick roundabout, where the A432 meets the Avon Ring Road, was

closed on July 12 after engineers found "accelerated deterioration and cracking" in the reinforced concrete structure.

National Highways, which owns and maintains the bridge, says it will remain closed until December “at the earliest”, while further investigations are carried out.

A MAN who was jailed for attacking a Yate dog walker has now been given a life sentence for raping two women.

The Voice reported last year that Nathan Giles, aged 34, had been given a six-month term for punching a 65-year-old dog owner who was trying to separate his pet from another dog that had attacked it in Brimsham Fields in October 2021.

Now it has emerged that Giles, from Wrington in North Somerset, also assaulted and raped two women in separate attacks.

He was given a life sentence, with a minimum term of 17 years and four months before he can be considered for parole, at Bristol Crown Court in July.

Giles was found guilty of nine offences, including four counts of rape, one of attempted rape and two of controlling or coercive behaviour.

He was also found guilty of one assault and sexual assault, and put on the sex offenders' register for life.

One victim said: "Nathan Giles has ruined my life…I feel that a part of me has been destroyed and I will never get that back.

"No sentence that Nathan Giles receives will ever justify what he has done to me. I am doing this for every woman out there, so that no one else has to endure the pain, the sleepless nights and constant fear."

Another said she felt "terrified, lost and ashamed" following the incident and would hide in shops to get away from people who looked like Giles.

Detective Sergeant Darren Weston said: "These two victims were subjected to horrific crimes at the hands of a dangerous man who has not accepted his actions."

'Speeding, road rage and huge queues' after bridge closes

From page 1 The official diversion is via Westerleigh Road to the A46 at Dodington, up to the Cross Hands at Old Sodbury and into Yate on the A432 from the east, adding an extra eight miles to the 4.6 mile journey between the Wick Wick roundabout and the centre of Yate.

But every day thousands of drivers are taking diversions through Westerleigh to the east, and Winterbourne to the west.

The Y1 First bus service to Bristol from Yate and Chipping Sodbury is diverting through Hambrook and Winterbourne.

First says passengers can expect delays – and other services in the area will be affected by increased traffic on minor roads.

South Gloucestershire Council says it is closely monitoring the impact of the closure, and may make changes to local traffic control, to ease the problems.

The authority says it has already received road safety concerns about the traffic emerging from Coalsack Lane and Henfield Road onto Westerleigh Road near the Kendleshire golf course and is "assessing what measures we can implement quickly if required".

But it says it will not reopen the right turn at the Hambrook traffic lights on the A4174 to give drivers an alternative route.

Westerleigh Parish Council chair Rob McCullough said there are concerns about the impact on the local area.

He said: “Speeding, road rage and huge queues are seriously impacting the Kendleshire Quiet Lanes area daily.

“We are working to feed back to South Glos officers with problems and suggestions, in particular the likes of vehicles still driving from Yate all the way up to the bridge closure before having to turn around and then find what inevitably seems to be the quickest sat nav diversion via narrow country lanes.

“Hopefully some simple, common sense solutions are forthcoming - like reopening the right turn at the Hambrook Lights, tweaking the timings of the Beefeater roundabout traffic lights to let more vehicles through from Westerleigh Road, adding temporary lights to a couple of tricky junctions and temporarily closing the likes of Coalsack Lane.

"It is very clear that just letting the local road network just cope is not the way forward.”

A council spokesperson said the authority was “closely monitoring” traffic flows, adding: “We are also considering options around some of the network junctions that have seen increased usage to help relieve any congestion and encourage traffic to move more freely.”

But in a statement on its website the council said: "The

Frampton Cotterell ward councillor John Lean said the closure had come as a surprise to everyone.

He said: “Since the closure we have been contacted by many local people concerned about traffic congestion and safety on the rural roads around the bridge. These roads are not suitable for HGVs. Neither are they suitable for the volume of traffic they are currently experiencing.

“Many of the concerns have been about the safety of turning onto Westerleigh Road from Henfield Road and there is a lot of local support for temporary traffic lights to be installed at

that junction."

National Highways told the Voice that investigations would take “some time” and “the earliest that a decision can be made regarding future restrictions is likely to be December 2023”.

A spokesperson said: “The structural investigations are detailed and specialist, and works are being undertaken by specialist contractors.

“The works involve identifying potential defects using digital scanning and then drilling into the structure to check the condition of the posttensioning system using a range of techniques.

“We are currently working on the underside of the structure at night under lane closures on the M4 and are looking to accelerate the topside works, before assessing the data and looking at all available options for the future of the structure.”

"The structure is safe and is not at risk of falling down - we have taken steps to limit traffic travelling on the bridge to avoid causing any further damage while we carry out complex, invasive investigations."

Bin strike 'chaos will worsen', warns union THE union representing South Gloucestershire bin crews says that "chaos will worsen" after a court ruled that agency workers cannot be used to break its strike.

Unite was among a group of unions that challenged a government decision to allow companies to bring in agency staff during strikes, and won their case at the High Court.

It means that from August 10, council waste contractor Suez will not be able to hire substitutes to do the jobs of the 150 workers who have been on strike since the end of June.

The union has also rejected an increased pay offer of 9% from Suez - but says the contractor is "refusing to enter into renewed negotiations" before July 31, something the company denies.

Suez has declined to say how many agency workers it has hired during the strike, but confirmed it was "reviewing" their use.

Days before the ruling, council service director Mark King had told the cabinet Suez was "trying to get more agency staff in to support the service".

Recycling, food waste, green bin and bulky waste collections have been suspended since June 26, with black bin rounds, Sort It centres and new 'deposit points' for food waste and recycling prioritised.

The six 'deposit points', open between 8am and 2pm every weekday, include one at Yate Park and Ride, in Badminton Road.

The council's Sort It centre in Yate, along with those in Mangotsfield and Thornbury, have extra facilities to take more recycling and black bin waste, but long queues have been reported.

A council spokesperson said: "Fortnightly black bin collections continue to be prioritised to ensure the disposal of waste such as personal hygiene items, medical waste, nappy sacks and pet waste.

"Please put your black bin out on your normal scheduled collection day. Please do not put any other containers out."

Suez believes its offer was "fair and competitive", and increased it to 9% during negotiations during the strike, but said on July 18 that Unite had rejected the new offer.

The contractor says the 15% Unite wants would mean an overall pay rise of 22% over two years.

Unite, which says the strike will last until September 3 if not resolved, says Suez made profits of £80.8 million in 2021.

The company’s South Gloucestershire bin loaders earn £11.53 per hour - equivalent to around £460 for a five-day week at eight hours per day, or just under £24,000 a year.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite has told Suez and the council repeatedly that it stands ready to enter negotiations at any time to bring this dispute to an end. Suez, however, seems keen to prolong disruption to residents for as long as possible because its leadership want to look strong."

A Suez spokesperson said: "The implication that we are not coming to the

Unite union senior rep Jim Little told the same meeting bin workers had been having to use food banks before the strike, because their wages are so low.

He said workers were paid less than other colleagues in the South West as he made an impassioned plea to council leaders to help resolve the pay dispute.

Mr Little said: “That is treating us with utter contempt.

“We do a very hard job, we go out in all winds and weathers, we get abused, we get underpaid, we get undervalued."

Council leader Claire Young and co-leader Ian Boulton have written an open letter to Unite and Suez calling on them to "sit down to resolve their dispute now".

Tour of Britain returns TOP bike race the Tour of Britain will pass through Chipping Sodbury and Yate - a year after being cancelled.

Stage 7 of the race on Saturday September 9 will start in Tewkesbury and finish at Gloucester Docks.

The stage was originally intended to be part of last year’s Tour of Britain, but was cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Details of timings will be revealed closer to the time, but organisers have confirmed that, like last year, the route will pass through Horton, Chipping Sodbury, Yate and Iron Acton before heading north through Rangeworthy, Bagstone, Cromhall and Charfield to Wotton-under-Edge and the finishing line in Gloucester.

Organisers say it will be "an undulating route to really test the riders on their penultimate day and will showcase the incredible scenery and landscape that Gloucestershire has to offer".

South Gloucestershire Council leader Claire Young said: "We are excited to welcome the Tour of Britain to South Gloucestershire this September.

"The event is a great way to bring communities together to spectate as the riders pass through our countryside, towns and villages and will also showcase our wonderful area to its global audience of millions.

"The excitement of the race has the potential to inspire more people to get out on their bikes in the local area and enjoy the benefits of cycling and travelling sustainably."

Race director Mick Bennett said: "We know how much people in Gloucestershire were looking forward to our planned stage in 2022, so, a little later than expected, we’re excited to be heading to this beautiful part of Britain!"

Last year the route had been due to make up Stage Six of the annual elite race but was cancelled after news of the Queen's death was announced the day before it had been due to take place.

Mash raises hospice cash THREE thousand music lovers attended the tenth annual Acton Aid charity music concerts in Iron Acton.

Ticket sales raised thousands of pounds for local good causes – and another £4,350 was raised in a bucket collection for charity St Peter's Hospice over the two nights.

Organisers said the Mash in the Meadows event on June 30, headlined by Queen tribute band Flash, was sold Russell Watson at Music in the out more than a week in Meadows advance.

Saturday's Music in the Meadows classical show was headlined by Britain's best-selling classical singer, Russell Watson, whose performance even included some Elvis numbers.

Acton Aid spokesman Rob Taylor said: “Securing the services of a huge internationally-known star such as Russell Watson was a real coup for Iron Acton."

In the audience at the weekend were the winners of three pairs of tickets donated by the organisers in a competition in June's Voice, with two winners choosing the Mash and the third choosing Russell Watson's concert.

Plans for next year's Mash, which will be held on the first weekend of July, are already underway.

Noise complaints fears for sports complex COUNCILLORS have raised concerns that 145 new homes could affect the future of Yate Outdoor Sports Complex.

South Gloucestershire planning committee members believe the new houses in Ladden Garden Village could “restrict the ability” of YOSC to continue running loud events, such as drone racing and Yate's 12-hour Relay for Life, because the new residents might complain about the noise.

The charity-run sports complex already has the right to have live music in marquees next to the site’s boundary until 11pm, the meeting was told.

The housing is part of the massive North Yate New Neighbourhood of 2,125 homes, schools, employment land and a local centre, granted outline permission in 2015.

Barratt Homes submitted detailed proposals for its final 145 properties for the estate, including 55 classed as affordable, on the southwestern edge just north of YOSC and next to homes in Long Croft.

But Yate Town Council and six residents objected, while ward councillors said a high fence was needed to act as an acoustic barrier between the development and the sports facility.

decision at its meeting in July, so officers could discuss the potential fence with Barratt Homes.

Planning and legal officers had recommended the plans be approved.

They said a condition requiring additional fencing to block noise was not reasonable because other measures would protect householders from noise, including 2m garden walls.

The closest properties would have side gables with no windows facing the site, and would form a noise barrier themselves, officers said.

But Cllr Adrian Rush (Lib Dem, Chipping Sodbury & Cotswold Edge) said: “The officers have got this slightly around the wrong way – they’re talking about protecting the houses.

“In reality what we’re talking about is

protecting YOSC from complaints from the houses.

“You cannot inhibit YOSC, it’s a regional facility.

“I’ve seen it happen where someone buys a house right next door to a church and then they moan about the bells, and no matter how much the developer puts warnings in on these houses there are going to be complaints."

Cllr Chris Willmore (Lib Dem, Yate North) asked for a condition requiring a "full acoustic barrier" along the boundary with YOSC, to minimise the chance of environmental health complaints.

She said: “We remain deeply concerned that the noise attenuation measures are not adequate."

Senior planning officer Eileen Medlin had advised councillors that a noise barrier was unnecessary.

She said: "There are many sports facilities that carry on in conjunction with residential development.

“There are tensions but the solution isn’t to put up an acoustic fence for which we don’t know the benefit or specification or the impact on landscape.”

Relay for Life shines through the storm MORE than 400 people defied the wind and rain to make the return of Yate's Relay for Life a day to remember.

Cancer survivors, relatives, friends and supporters took part in the 12 hour non-stop walking festival at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex despite stormy weather that had led to many other events in the region being called off.

Spurring them on was their mission to raise awareness and cash to help Cancer Research UK with its work.

The event in July was the first Relay for Life since 2019, and chair Keith Hatherell said it had been revitalised and would once again be an annual fixture.

Keith said: “It was a really good day. The fund raising is continuing to go on, and I am sure we will reach our target of £20,000.

“We are all very pleased to see the response from local community in Yate and Sodbury, showing what they can do.”

Then 19 teams of sponsored volunteers walked and ran the track from midday to midnight, as part of Cancer Research UK’s national campaign to raise awareness and funds to beat cancer.

Nationally Relay For Life raises over £2 million for lifesaving cancer research every year.

Keith, himself a cancer survivor, said they owed a huge debt to all the supporters and the performers who kept them going

on the day.

They included local bands, and three dance and performing arts groups: Yasmin's Dance and Street Cred from Chipping Sodbury, and Not Another Stage School, from Yate.

Keith, from Yate, said: "My reason for being involved is 10 years ago I was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer and had fantastic NHS treatment and I can live my life almost with no issues.

Kevin pops question EVENT volunteer Kevin Donovan took centre stage at the Yate Relay for Life to propose to his girlfriend.

With hundreds of people looking on, Kevin interrupted a performance of the Proclaimers’ Let’s Get Married by singer James Bower, and got down on one knee.

Kevin, who lost both his parents to cancer, chose the moment to spring the surprise on Mandy Warren.

He said: “She was blown away and said yes straight away. I had planned it months ago, asking James to learn the song especially, as it’s one of our favourites.

“When he announced he was performing the song for me, Mandy didn’t twig, until I proposed part way through the song. It was a lovely moment. Strangers came over and hugged us and congratulated us”.

Kevin and Mandy are tying the knot next June, just in time for the 2024 Relay for Life.

“I wanted to give back in a big way. The Relay went as smoothly as possible and that was thanks to a very small team organising, and the community supporting us.

“People were taking part for their own personal reasons, but also were focused on the bigger cause.”

Keith said the Candle of Hope ceremony towards the end of the night was very moving.

He said: “We lit candles and held a minute’s silence. It was highly emotional and tearful.

It was an important moment, about the people who did not make it, and to remind us we are raising money so we get more survivors.”

Planning for year’s event is already underway – and volunteers who would like to join the organising committee are welcome.

Awards for officers TWO police officers who worked together to resuscitate a man after a road crash have been given awards.

PC James Theobald and PC Thomas Blackmore were among more than 50 officers recognised at the Avon and Somerset Royal Humane Society Awards in July.

They were both presented PC James Theobald and PC Thomas with a Resuscitation Blackmore Certificate for their role in helping a man who had crashed his car as result of a medical episode in Yate in June last year.

Their citation said: "Both officers worked with other first responders to give CPR to the man, who was not breathing, before he was taken to hospital."

Another officer, PC Michael Collard, received a certificate of commendation for saving the life of a seriously injured man in Chipping Sodbury in January last year.

His citation said: "Officers were conducting patrols on Chipping Sodbury High Street when they came across a man who had been seriously injured on a piece of glass, severing an artery.

"PC Collard reacted quickly, applying a tourniquet to the victim’s arm and liaised with the ambulance service, tending to the male until they arrived on scene.

"His actions undoubtedly helped to slow down the extreme blood loss that the man was experiencing, and helped ensure a speedy response from other emergency services."

Avon & Somerset police have not released further details of either incident.

Children and staff at Cherry Tree Day Nursery celebrate their report

Nursery grows children's confidence

A NURSERY has been commended for its confident children, who are "motivated to learn".

Cherry Tree Day Nursery in Lodge Road has been rated 'good' in all areas - education, behaviour, leadership and personal development by Ofsted inspectors.

Inspector Tracey Cook, who visited the nursery in May, said it had a "friendly, nurturing staff team".

She said: "Children develop trusting relationships with staff, who care for them.

"Children are confident and motivated to learn and show they are curious and inquisitive in their play."

The inspector said all the children have daily opportunities to spend time outdoors.

She said: “Older children develop their physical skills as they ride trikes, climb tyres and wash the ride-on cars. Older babies enjoy running and playing in the water, mud and sand.”

The inspector said staff "work well together" and have a good understanding of how children learn, preparing them for the next stage in education.

Staff identify and take effective steps to help close gaps in children's learning.

The report said: “They introduce new words as children play, which helps to build on children's vocabulary and understanding. They give children time to think and respond to questions.

"The motivated management team designs a varied curriculum, putting children at its centre.

"Partnerships with parents are good. Parents know about what their children are learning at nursery through the online system and daily communication."

Ofsted's visit to the nursery in Lodge Road, which has 63 children aged four and under on its roll and employs 12 members of staff, was the regulator's first since 2017.

The report praised the nursery's work promoting healthy eating and support to help children "develop their independence".

The inspector said: “All children have good opportunities to make their own decisions about who, what and where they want to play. Staff teach children to make choices and encourage them to take risks and do things for themselves."

To further improve, the inspector said the nursery, which first registered in 1995, should provide effective supervision to support, coach and train staff, and adapt daily routines for babies, particularly when moving between activities.

Owner Jeanette Mullen said she wanted to thank all the children, parents and staff for making the nursery a happy place for everyone.

She said: ‘We are a proud and dedicated team who together provide a warm, fun and caring environment for learning today and for the future.

“We are pleased that Ofsted saw the support our children are given to meet their individual potential at Cherry Tree.

“After 28 years of private ownership we are now welcoming families who were once children at Cherry Tree themselves.”

'Harmonious' village school wins praise A VILLAGE school with fewer than 100 pupils has been praised for its "harmonious" playtimes, ambitious curriculum and caring ethos.

Education watchdog Ofsted inspected Iron Acton Church of England Primary School in May - its first visit for five years.

The inspectors said the school, which has 98 children aged four to 11 on its roll, has retained the 'good' rating it has had since 2009. Their report said pupils are "happy to attend" the school and "enjoy their learning", adding: "Playtimes are harmonious. All year groups play together well and pupils are considerate of one another.

"A culture in which there are ‘no outsiders’ means this is a highly inclusive environment, in which pupils thrive."

The inspectors said children behaved well and appreciated the frequent praise staff gave them for good behaviour, meaning that "most strive to meet the high expectations that staff have of them".

They said parents and pupils are "very positive" about the school, which they found "welcoming", with very approachable staff.

The inspectors said: "The ethos of the school is about having ‘the courage to care’.

Lib Dems pick Claire again SOUTH Gloucestershire Council leader Claire Young has been selected to fight the Thornbury & Yate constituency for the Liberal Democrats at the next general election.

It will be the third time the Frampton Cotterell ward councillor has stood for election as the area's MP, having stood for her party at the 2017 and 2019 elections won by Conservative Luke Hall.

The seat is a top target for the Lib Dems, who topped the poll in every council ward in the constituency in May's local elections.

Current MP Mr Hall has held the seat for the Tories since 2015, when he beat Lib Dem Steve Webb, who had been the pensions minister in the Coalition government and had held the seat and its predecessor, Northavon, since 1997.

He had a majority of more than 12,000 at the last two general elections.

Cllr Young, who lives with her family in Coalpit Heath, has been a South Gloucestershire councillor since 2007.

She is a Cambridge maths graduate who worked in the software industry, with tech giant IBM and local high-tech start-up businesses, and has also performed academic research into the environmental impact of information technology.

Cllr Young said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to stand at the next election and win this seat for the Liberal Democrats.

"Living locally and running the Council I know just what is needed in the area - it’s time for an MP who speaks up and delivers."

The next election is widely expected to take place next year, although the latest is can be held is January 2025.

'Lifeline' buses saved

A “LIFELINE” bus service that faced the axe has been saved with a £190,000 subsidy from two councils.

The 84/85 was due to stop running in the next few weeks but has now received a stay of execution until 2024.

The service from Yate to Wotton-under-Edge provides the only public transport link from villages including Cromhall and Hawkesbury Upton to essential services such as work, education, medical care and shops in the towns.

Funding was due to run out on August 27 but buses will now be run by current operator The Big Lemon to a limited timetable, two hours in each direction, until next Easter.

South Gloucestershire Council and Gloucestershire County Council are both providing funding to keep it going, with 90% of the £190,000 subsidy coming from South Gloucestershire.

Another £60,000 is being spent to support the reduced 622 service, which is no longer run as a public route between Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury and Cribbs Causeway but runs as a limited service for pupils attending the Castle School.

Chipping Sodbury & Cotswold Edge ward councillor Adrian Rush said: “I have been contacted by numerous residents concerned about the loss of the 84/85.

“I am truly glad that we have successfully secured an extension, but our work doesn’t stop here.

“I am dedicated to finding a long-term solution on behalf of residents.”

Council cabinet member for infrastructure Chris Willmore said: “We have been doing all we can to keep bus services running so people can continue to get to their doctor appointments, their jobs, schools, and communities remain connected.

“I am confident this news will be welcomed by people who rely on these bus routes as I know how important they are to enable them to go about their day-to-day lives."

Celebration of age YATE'S older generations sang and played music, got active and made new friends at this year's Ageing Better Festival.

The free annual celebration of ageing, hosted by the town council at Yate Shopping Centre in July with support from Yate Active Lifestyle Centre and the Pop Inn Café, included singing and music, open-air exercise classes and cream teas.

There were stalls from a host of organisations for visitors to make connections, have conversations and get information on subjects from social clubs to mobility and dementia.

Yate Mayor Cheryl Kirby said: "It was truly touching to see so many people come together in support of this special event.

"The festival is only in its third year, and it has quickly become an occasion that the council and its friends are proud to provide."

FAMILIES looking for a summer holiday challenge are being invited to take part in this year's Chipping Sodbury Summer Search.

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has voted unanimously to oppose the proposed mass closure of railway ticket offices, including the peakhours facility at Yate station.

An emergency motion tabled by the Liberal Democrat group on July 19 received full cross-party support.

Opposition Conservatives said it was “misleading” and an “obvious attempt to bash the Government” but backed it nonetheless.

The proposal instructs the authority’s co-leaders Claire Young and Ian Boulton to write to the Transport Secretary and the Railways Minister “expressing the council’s opposition” to the planned closures, which would leave the region with no ticket offices, even at Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway.

They will also write to Great Western Railway opposing “any plans to leave South Gloucestershire residents without access to the full set of services provided by staffed ticket offices” and calling on the operator to publish its equalities impact assessment, amid warnings the move will leave disabled and elderly passengers stranded.

Yate's ticket office is currently staffed from 7-11am, and the Lib Dems say the proposed changes take away the ticket office and position a member of staff, who won't be able to sell tickets, on the platform for the same period of time.

Metro Mayor Dan Norris has met Rail Minister Huw Merriman to raise his concerns about the proposals, which were initially announced with a consultation period of just three weeks.

Under pressure from politicians, unions and campaigners, the Rail Delivery Group, which is behind the proposals, has extended the deadline for public comments to September 1.

A Yate farm gives up its secrets

A COMMON theme of many of these articles is donations of significant local artefacts to Yate Heritage Centre.

A few years ago, I wrote about the donation of the Robert Hooper family photo albums, and the direct links with Stanshawes Court.

In more recent times, Yate Heritage Centre has acquired some significant objects from the Mulchinock family, erstwhile owners of Goose Green Farm in Yate.

The collection is inextricably linked to the farm and dates from the earlier years of its history.

According to deeds uncovered by local historian Mary Isaac, the farm was owned by Mr and Mrs John Neale in 1659, and the property possessed 128 acres.

It remains one of the finest-preserved farmhouses in and around Yate, and can also boast an outstanding 17th century wall painting and other early features.

It is one of a handful of local farms in Yate to be listed.

A joy of working in local heritage is meeting fascinating local people and forging a good working relationship with them.

The Mulchinocks, thankfully, have been very public-spirited and donated significant parts of their collections to us.

The artefacts have revealed not only much about the farm’s history but also that of Yate.

Pride of place in the collection must go to the cannonball and musket balls, dated to the Civil War period.

We know there was a siege of Yate Court, a mile to the north, in 1644 and an attack on St Mary’s Church.

These items were discovered to the north of the farm in the 1960s, and reflect the amount of military activity that clearly took place at the time of the siege.

The farm building itself must take a starring role in this story.

Following work to the structure of the building, the Mulchinocks discovered seeds and grains within the floorboards, as well as clay pipes which appear to be at least pre-19th century.

These items will assist in telling the full story of the farm.

Finally, as a farm building it has also yielded farming artefacts aplenty.

There are 17th century horseshoes and sickles, demonstrating the working life of this early Yate farm.

To complete the picture, Liz Mulchinock also donated an electric butter churn that was used on the farm until the 21st century.

Ms GB finals for Anna-Marie A PHOTOGRAPHER from Yate found herself on the other side of the camera – and won a place in the finals of a national beauty pageant.

Anna-Marie Coster will join 25 other women in the finals of Ms Great Britain in October.

She is taking part to raise money for Cancer Research, in memory of her grandmother, Joyce Smart.

Anna-Marie said she had been pleasantly surprised at Anna-Marie Coster her selection for the finals of the event, which is the over 30s version of the Miss Great Britain pageant.

She said: “I entered the contest after my mum suggested I apply.

I’ve never done anything like this before and I never thought I would get anywhere with it, so it was a really lovely surprise when I was told I had made the finals!

“I am currently busy coming up with fundraising ideas."

Anna-Marie is an award winning photographer, who specialises in pet photography and family portraits.

Miss Great Britain is Britain’s longest running beauty pageant, having started 73 years ago. The Ms Great Britain category was introduced in 2020.

The final will take place over two days in Leicester at the end of October.

Appeal to end June's wheelbarrow run VILLAGERS in Westerleigh are being urged to help free their 80-year-old church warden from a weekly wheelbarrow dash.

June Powell uses her pink wheelbarrow to take a heap of dirty cups from St James’s regular coffee mornings back home, because the 13th century church has nowhere to wash them up.

Fellow parishioners launched a tongue-in-cheek appeal to "free the Westerleigh One from the dreaded pink wheelbarrow”, as part of a campaign to raise £200,000 for new facilities including a kitchen and toilet, as it has neither.

Parishioner Carol Goddard said: “What we want is to make the church more of a community hub."

Carol said once the new kitchen is built, one of the first things they will install is a new dishwasher.

August, 2023 Ann Murray founded the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate & Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

Sweet and sharp summer delight THIS month’s recipe is a real treat and a little different.

Blondies are made with white chocolate, as the name implies, but don’t worry if you’re not a fan of white chocolate, because the addition of slightly sharp raspberries cuts down the sweetness of the chocolate.

Give it a try - you won’t be disappointed!

Here’s what you do:

Raspberry blondies You can make these delicious treats all year round with frozen raspberries, but I think they taste best with fresh, seasonal raspberries.

Ingredients: Butter, chopped into small pieces – 125g (4 ½oz) White chocolate – 200g (8oz) chopped into small, equal pieces Caster sugar - 150g (5oz) Eggs - 2, preferably, free range, lightly beaten

Plain flour – 110g (4oz) Self-raising flour – 75g (3oz) White chocolate – extra 75g (3oz) chopped coarsely (optional) Fresh or frozen raspberries* – 150g (5oz) * If using frozen raspberries, do not defrost them before using A little icing sugar for dusting at the end Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4

Grease an oblong 12 x 8in tin, line the base and two opposite sides with non-stick paper. Bring the paper a good 2in above the rim of the tin. This helps you to lift the blondies out more easily.

Melt the butter and 200g of the white chocolate in a microwaveable bowl, on medium for 1 minute.

Stir. Do bursts of 20 seconds until the chocolate has just become smooth. Stir until there are no lumpy bits of chocolate left.

Cool until just slightly warm.

Stir in the sugar, eggs, flour and extra chocolate, if using.

Stir in the raspberries so that they are evenly distributed.

Spread the mixture into the prepared pan.

Bake for 30-40 mins or until just firm to the touch. The edges should be pulling away from the tin, and dark golden brown. A cocktail stick

inserted into the middle should come out with only a little bit of stickiness to it. Remember, it will firm up as it cools.

Cool in the tin for 10 mins.

Lift the blondies out of the tin onto a board, using the paper to help you.

Divide into squares. I like to do small bites: you can get as many as 30 from this size of tin (6x5).

Transfer them to a wire cooling rack to finish cooling.

Serve, dusted with a little icing sugar.

Cook’s tip: These will keep in an airtight tin for up to a week, or you can freeze them for up to a month, but I think they are best eaten when still warm.

If you have kept them, warm them for 30 seconds on medium in your microwave.

Woodlands Primary School CHILDREN'S' University celebrates home and outside learning, and recognises the impact this has on learning in school.

This year we have totalled 19,418 hours of learning through Children's University, an outstanding achievement!

We held a Children's University graduation for 141 children from Woodlands who are graduating this year.

Year 3 Mulberry class pupil Elliot Hanson received a Gold Postgraduate Award from the mayor of Yate and Year 6 teacher Mrs Longworth.

IT is with deep regret that I must report the recent death of David Peacock, one of our longest serving members.

David was club President in 2003/4 and had been a great ambassador for the club, involving himself in many activities, most prominently in the youth sector, where he led the club’s participation in the annual Rotary Youth Learning Awards, an intensive leadership experience for students in our local secondary schools.

David will be much missed. Our condolences go to his wife Angela and their family.

At our club meeting in early July outgoing President, Bob Holt, handed over to Steve Young for the Rotary year 2023/24.

The club was delighted to host the Chipping Sodbury Rotary Young Innovator competition at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, where GCSE and A-level students from Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green schools exhibited their project work in several categories.

The club supported the Rotary-sponsored ‘Kids Out’ event at Cattle Country Adventure

Park, where around 40 children from Culverhill School in Yate had a very enjoyable day out.

A good number of club members helped to serve beer at the annual Sodfest event organised by Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club.

Club Rotarian, Nick Cragg, acted as the MC throughout.

Inner Wheel Club of Chipping Sodbury INNER Wheel members were out in force for the Classic Car event organised by the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury.

The coffee stop on the route was organised, run and largely stocked by Inner Wheel members. Others were back at the rugby club, ready to hand out lunches to returning drivers and their passengers. The sun shone on a busy and successful day.

Our AGM took place at the beginning of July, led by past President Binny Fraser, and all reflected on a happy and successful year.

We were delighted that we had been able to donate £2,635 to a range of charities, local, national and international.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to two long standing members (Sylvia and Jill) but were delighted to welcome three new members, including Deb, who was ‘badged up’ at the AGM. August will see us meeting informally with lunch at The Swan at Tytherington for lunch.

We shall be back at the Town Hall in September for our regular 2nd Monday meeting when prospective new members, or those interested in finding out more, are warmly welcomed.

WHEN I saw on our programme that our July talk was on Mary Queen of Scots my heart sank - this period seems to be the only thing I remember from school history lessons, and was why I hated them so much!

I am pleased to say I could not have been more wrong - the presentation by Dr Gillian White was delivered with such enthusiasm and knowledge that I was listening to every word.

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, and I would urge anyone who wants to know more about the WI to come along: our talks may surprise you, as this one did for me.

Our September meeting is on the 7th at 7.30pm at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

The talk will be on Victoria & Albert, by Susan Symonds.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Chipping Sodbury Lions OUR annual Youth Awards event was held in July at the Old Grammar School, with six teams competing for the £1,000 first prize.

The judges were James Ball, former Mayor of Chipping Sodbury, Brian Hardy, Chairman of Chipping Sodbury Towns Land Charity, and Richard Elford and Richard Cole, members of the Lions club.

After presentations from the six teams, the first prize was awarded to 1st Chipping Sodbury Scouts, with three second prizes of £500 for Cosmos Trampoline Club, Southwold Swimming Club and the Special Friends Club.

Two third prizes of £300 were awarded to The Pod Movement and Chipping Sodbury Preschool.

Lesser awards were made to Yate Utd FC Juniors, St John‘s Ambulance, Jazzy Jamboree, Little Sparks Toddlers, Storkies, 1st Wickwar Scouts, Winterbourne Utd Youth FC, Coalpit Heath FC and Wickwar Youth Centre.

The evening was enjoyed by everyone, and the groups had the opportunity to share experiences and ideas.

Chipping Sodbury Morning WI SUMMER may have taken a bit of a break, but we are still meeting as usual.

Our June speaker was Charlotte Curtis from Willmott Dixon who gave a wonderful talk about Bristol Beacon (formerly Colston Hall) still a controversial building, but such history.

Marina of Gogglebox fame visited us in July.

It was lovely to meet the kind and amusing lady many of us have enjoyed watching with her late friend Mary.

Their take on life and that weeks' TV viewing always raised a smile, and she did not fail to entertain us on her visit, in her lovely down-toearth way.

Despite the unpredictable weather we still managed a litter pick in Chipping Sodbury, and a walk around Ridge Woods.

A table has been booked for the Hawkesbury Horticultural Show in August, fingers crossed we come in the top three, and in September we are off the Gloucester Docks for our Grand Day Out. Please call 07809 534 107 if you would like to find out more.

Yate Library YATE Library is running two free children's events in support of this year's Summer Reading Challenge.

The sport-themed challenge is for primary school-age children: read six books by September 9 to earn a medal.

The first event is Ready, Set, Make, a drop-in sport-themed craft activity on August 8 from 10.30am-noon.

A Lego Club event, with stories, poems and model making, takes place on August 19 from 10.30-11.30am. It is most suitable for children aged four to 10, who must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is required.

n SPORT Swim club hits 50 A YATE swimming club is celebrating its 50th anniversary next month.

Southwold Swimming Club was set up in 1973 by five founding members.

It was named after the then Southwold swimming pool, now known as Yate Leisure Centre, where the club still trains.

The club is still going strong 50 years on, with 175 swimmers on the register, ranging from four-year-old beginners in our Learn to Swim section up to Masters squad members aged 50.

This year also marks the 10year anniversary of head coach Simon Wilkins.

To celebrate the club is inviting current and former swimmers, coaches and their families to a 50th anniversary celebration at Crossbow House in Frampton Cotterell on Saturday September 9 at 7.30pm.

Cup triumph for Under-11s CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club Under-11s produced a memorable team performance to lift the Bristol Youth League’s Dave McCarthy Cup, defeating Bristol by 18 runs in a low-scoring clash at Winterbourne.

It was a deserved reward for excellent performances throughout the summer, capped by a fine effort with bat and ball when it mattered most.

Sodbury won the toss and got off to a perfect start thanks to openers Gautham Manchikalapati (25 retired) and captain Ronnie Freeman (11). Harry Baker (15) also impressed.

Tight bowling brought Bristol back into contention, restricting Sodbury to 85-7 after 20 overs.

Needing a special effort to defend a low total, Sodbury were on the back foot as Bristol reached 37-1 after eight overs.

But that was the signal for Sodbury to change the momentum of the final with accurate bowling which was backed up by excellent catching and fielding.

Harrison Davis finished with 3-12 from three overs and was well supported by Gautham, who took two wickets without conceding a run from his one over, and Ronnie (2-11 from three).

Eddie Rendell claimed 1-2 from three overs and there was also a wicket for Theo Gilmore, while Ben Leonard sent down three overs for only one run, and Harry Baker’s three overs cost just five runs.

Chairman Jim Kendall said: “It was an absolutely fantastic effort from the team, they fully deserved to win after playing so well.

“I would also like to pay tribute to our coaches and parents for their hard work and dedication behind the scenes; it’s been a magnificent team effort in every way.”

Isaac wins bronze A YATE athlete has won a bronze medal running for Team GB at the European U23 Championships.

Isaac Cory, aged 21, was part of the Great Britain 4x400m relay team for the championships at Espoo, Finland, in July.

The former Chipping Sodbury School pupil is a member of Yate & District Athletics Club and, after gaining a European qualification time was selected by British Athletics for the GB team.

Isaac ran the second leg of the first heat, where the GB team finisehd second to earn a place in the final.

He was a reserve for the final, where GB came third behind Italy and Turkey.

Georgina strikes gold on England boccia debut THE founder of an accessible sports club is celebrating her first England cap - and gold medal.

Georgina Moore, who lives in Chipping Sodbury, made her international debut in the Boccia UK teams and pairs open competition in Swansea in July She was competing in the BC3 (ramping) pairs category with Lee Maddison, from Stocktonon-Tees.

Despite only having one opportunity to meet up beforehand to train, they beat top teams from Northern Ireland, Wales and two other England pairs, including highlyranked players, to take the gold.

Georgina, who grew up in Frampton Cotterell, said: "The final was very close, against another England team, but we won it 3-1.

"It was such an honour to represent England but to win gold has just been the most incredible experience!

"I am so grateful for all the support I’ve received, especially

Georgina Moore with the winning GEM team - Steve Owens, Max Dewfall, Tom Ainsworth and Chloe Cockram. the crucial funding I get from SportsAid." Georgina now has her sights set on representing Great Britain in the Paralympic Games, winning more medals along the way.

But she needs more funding to keep going, as each competition costs at least £300 in travel, accommodation and

entry costs for Georgina, who has a severe physical disability, to attend with carers.

She said: "There is no way I can afford that living on benefits during this cost-of-living crisis.

"Unfortunately boccia is very expensive but it’s the only fully accessible sport out there that I can compete in."

or individuals who would be willing to sponsor her to supplement the funding she has from SportsAid to get in touch.

Georgina's GEM Boccia Club, based at Yate Leisure Centre, has also made a winning start to competitive sport.

The GEMs won the sport's National League, contested by teams throughout the country, in its launch season.

Winning the West regional contest put them through to the national finals in Nottingham, where they won all four of their matches to take the trophy and qualify for the sport's Super League next season.

Georgina said: "They have done amazingly well, as this was their first year competing as a team together.

"Myself and coach Tom are super proud of them and they’ve worked so hard this season."

Verna wins championship 'riding blind' A BLIND horse rider from Old Sodbury has won a national dressage championship.

Verna Clifford won her class at the Riding for the Disabled Association's National Championships at Hartpury University and College.

Verna is a keen rider and trains at the Avon Riding Centre for the disabled in Henbury, Bristol.

She joined more than 300 other competitors from across the UK with her horse Harry at the event in July.

Verna is a member of Chipping Sodbury WI and regularly gives talks to other WIs and

groups about her riding experience, calling her talk "Riding Blind".

She said: "I know many people are amazed that I horse ride, being blind, but I am proof that so much is achievable with a little help.

"I owe so much to the volunteers at the Avon Riding Centre for my success!"

RDA’s National Championships is the biggest event of its kind.

Held at Hartpury every year, it includes a wide range of classes covering events from dressage to carriage driving and vaulting.
