Retirement homes approved on land wanted by community OVER 60 new retirement apartments are to be built in Yate on land east of Normandy Drive in a blow to local people who wanted the area for community use. The land is adjacent to the former Sea Stores site which was redeveloped into Elswick park, a housing estate where many families now live. They say the area is an open space where their children go and play. When Churchill Retirement Living first published its proposals, Claire Young, the Liberal Democrat group leader on South Gloucestershire Council, said: "People in the area have told me there is nowhere else for their children to play games locally without crossing busy roads, and parking on the narrow streets is also a massive issue.� The controversy over the site east of Normandy Drive dates back to 2014, when Taylor Wimpey applied to build nine houses there.
