Dog mess crackdown DOG owners in Yate and Chipping Sodbury who don’t clear up their pet’s mess on commons, woodland and heaths could soon be fined up to £1,000 as authorities get tough on dog fouling. A new initiative could mean they will also have to prove they are carrying bags for clearing up.

South Gloucestershire Council is currently consulting on whether to introduce a public spaces protection order in relation to dog fouling. It would also aim to bring in new powers for authorised officers to make sure they have the means to clean up.

The move has been given the backing of Sodbury’s mayor, James Ball. He told Yate and Sodbury Voice that there have been problems on the Ridings open space in Chipping Sodbury: “This is an area where owners let their dogs run free and they don't pick up their mess. This is not only very irresponsible, it is extremely dangerous as it is where adults and children play sport.”

A council spokesperson said: "It is proposed to extend the land

types on which people have to clear up after their dogs so it applies to all land open to the air

which the public have access to.”

Extra rules over dog fouling welcomed DOG owners could be literally stopped in their tracks in future and asked to prove they are able to clean up after their dog as part of a new council crackdown.

South Gloucestershire Council is consulting on whether to adopt a public spaces protection order, or PSPO, which would also see fines of up to £1,000 for dog owners that let their pets foul on commons, woodland, farmland and heaths. Currently enforcement measures don’t apply to these areas. Council officers would carry out the role under new enforcement powers which are being considered in South Gloucestershire.

The PSPO would apply to all land in the area ‘open to the air’, which the public has access to, except for land owned by the Forestry Commission.

Landowners will be able to exclude their land if they wish.

Sodbury Mayor, James Ball told Yate and Sodbury Voice: “There seems to be a habit of people putting their dog waste into poo bags and then hanging the bags on trees, we think they fully intend to pick them up on the way back from their walk but must simply forget” “There have also been issues with dogs fouling on the football and rugby pitches on the Ridings in Chipping Sodbury. This is an area where owners let their dogs run free and they don't pick up their mess. This is not only very irresponsible, it is extremely dangerous as it is where adults and children play sport.”

“The Town Trust offer free poo bags on the Ridings and we must urge all dog owners who use these amenities to collect all of their dog waste before leaving.

With South Glos Council looking to fine owners £1000 if they aren't carrying poo bags, this is definitely a good way forward” A council spokesperson said: “Dog walkers will be expected to show they have bags or other

means of clearing up, even if the dog hasn’t defecated at that time.”

“If they cannot do this, and they are not exempt from the PSPO, they will have committed an offence.”

“Breach of the PSPO is an offence, which can result in fine of up to £1,000 if convicted.”

The council may issue a fine instead of pursuing prosecution.

This would be set at the maximum, £100, or reduced to £75 for prompt payment.

South Gloucestershire Council is also putting up glow in the dark posters to remind dog owners that on dark winter nights “we’re watching you”. This initiative is part of Keep Britain Tidy’s campaign. In areas where it’s already in place, there’s been a reduction in dog fouling of up to 77 per cent.

The PSPO will not apply to people with assistance dogs where the disability affects the person’s ability to clean up after their dog.

The council’s consultation runs until January 11.

n NEWS A FORMER care home in Yate could be demolished and net the council £900,000 – but using it to house vulnerable young people is seen as the best option.

The Woodleaze facility in Station Road shut its doors and owner South Gloucestershire Council has been working out what the best use for it is.

The authority is expected to get the most out of any land it does not need, but that is judged on the social and environmental benefits, not just the economic gains.

The idea being promoted is to convert the home and use the 20 rooms to support 16 to 25-year-olds – half who are leaving care with higher support needs, and half for young people from other backgrounds, some of them homeless.

The council is currently reliant on independent providers who often offer oneto-one support.

It can save more than £1million by 2021/22 by either cutting or substantially reducing the number of care leavers it places with them.

As well as being more cost effective, cabinet agenda papers says the proposal will meet the vulnerable young people’s needs better and they can stay local rather than going further afield.

The other options being considered are

Council to decide future of former Yate care home demolishing the care home, which could cost £150,000, and selling it on the open market for around £900,000.

This could deliver either 35 per cent, or 100 per cent affordable housing if a housing association took it on.

If it is converted for young people, it could be managed by South Gloucestershire Council but this would have upfront and ongoing costs.

The option being recommended to cabinet members is working with a housing association, namely Solon, which unlike the council would be able to tap into Homes England funding.

It would be required to convert, manage and maintain the building.

The papers say: “This provides the most cost-effective option for the council and one which improves the offer to young people and

delivers significant savings at the same time.”

Speaking previously at April’s cabinet meeting, Councillor Jon Hunt, the executive member for children and young people, said: “There is the possibility that, instead of a capital receipt, we can look at it differently and provide something on that site that will be of great benefit to our residents.”

n NEWS A CHIPPING Sodbury man has been ordered to pay £810.59 in fines and costs, and been given 160 hours of community service, after pleading guilty in court to fly tipping. Magistrates said that his community service should be spent picking up rubbish.

Jake Thomas, 22, of Woodmans Close, Chipping Sodbury, was prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council’s environmental protection team after two separate loads of fly tipped waste were discovered between March and May – one in Hoovers Lane, near Iron Acton, and the other in a lane in Dodington, near Old Sodbury.

Evidence was found at the fly tips referring to addresses in Cromhall and Yate. Subsequent enquiries by council officers revealed the waste had been removed by Thomas as a business transaction.

Thomas was interviewed by council officers and admitted to carrying out the two fly tips. He also admitted he did not hold a waste carriers licence.

The case was heard at Bristol Magistrates’ Court, where Thomas pleaded guilty to the fly tipping and having no registered waste carriers licence.

He was given a 160-hour community order by the court,

The waste dumped at Hoovers Lane, Iron Acton to be completed within a period of 12 months. The Magistrate specifically indicated that if possible this should involve clearing up other people’s rubbish. He was also ordered to pay £85 Victim Surcharge and costs of £725.59.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism Cllr Paul Hughes said: “Fly tipping is an issue that negatively affects our communities and local environment and this activity will not be tolerated

in South Gloucestershire.

This particular case saw the offender disregarding the law to deliberately dump waste in two rural locations.

“There is no excuse for this type of behaviour. Waste crime puts the environment at risk and anyone found to be fly tipping in South Gloucestershire will be prosecuted. Residents also have a duty of care to ensure that they only give their waste to registered waste carriers.”

South Gloucestershire Council’s envirocrime team co-ordinates education and enforcement action, gathering evidence to pursue offenders through the courts.

The council says anyone flytipping in South Gloucestershire is five times more likely to be successfully prosecuted than anywhere else in the country.

Its Envirocrime Team have a 100 per cent record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence.

Residents and businesses are advised to only give their rubbish to an Environment Agency registered waste carrier.

Yate rugby club supports foodbank LOCAL rugby club Yate RFC has been supporting the Trussell Trust Foodbank, based in Station Road.

Yate football coach jailed for sexual offences against children A QUALIFIED football coach has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually abusing two teenage girls.

Neal Harris, 25, of Yate, admitted four counts of sexual activity with a child. All the offences happened between 2015

and 2017 and were against two underage teenage girls in the South Gloucestershire area.

Following a police investigation he was arrested on 28 March 2017.

Investigating officer DS Geoff Smith said: “Neal Harris abused his position of trust in the worst way possible and took advantage of two teenage girls who he was in contact with through his football coaching.”

“He groomed the victims who believed they were in a relationship with them and he used social media as one method of communicating with them. He told them they had to keep the 'relationship' a secret.”

“He met them in parks, woods, car-parks and in public places including behind a supermarket, which is where the sexual abuse would take place.”

“The victims now understand

they were groomed and the offending committed against them will have an impact on them for the rest of their lives.”

n NEWS A CHIPPING Sodbury man who is recovering from a stroke is among those who are benefitting from a new unit.

Chris Alcock, 78, was one of 15 patients who left the Henderson Ward at Thornbury hospital to move to a new unit in the town. Chris said: “The nurses have tried really hard to make things easier for people on the ward, but it has been cramped; I was looking forward to moving.”

The new unit is called the Henderson Rehabilitation Unit, and it’s sited within The Orders of St John Care Trust Grace Care Centre. It’s staffed and managed by Sirona who provide community adult and children services across South Gloucestershire for the NHS. Ward manager Rebecca Thomas said: ““Chris couldn’t walk when he first came to Thornbury; now he can thanks to the skills and experience of the staff. All the staff are moving with us to the new unit so this, with the much improved

Tea dances prove popular for dementia group CHIPPING Sodbury Dementia Support Group says its regular dance sessions are proving a big hit.

The recently formed organisation, co-ordinated by Jacki Hebblethwaite, grew out of an original idea to form a Memory Café in the town.

“A grant from South Gloucestershire County Council started the whole thing off”, said Jackie. “Since then Chipping Sodbury Rotary together with the Inner Wheel Club, has been totally supportive and their involvement has been fantastic”.

The tea dances are held at the Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

They have grown in popularity and regularly entertain over 80 local people. Focused on local residents with dementia, they provide an afternoon of musical entertainment with friends and family and an opportunity to dance in a friendly and welcoming environment.

“As well as Rotarians we also receive help from lots of different people,’ added Jackie, “So it’s very much a community event."

Donations from Rotary, Inner Wheel, the Townlands Charity and Waitrose allow all expenses to be met and ensure that this event remains free.

The next dance will be held on Wednesday 30th January 2019.

n NEWS MEMORIAL trees that were vandalised have been replaced thanks to the company that planted them originally.

Having read in the Voice that vandals had destroyed two of the trees planted near to Chipping Sodbury Town FC’s ground at the Ridings, Landcare Tree Nursery based in Old Sodbury stepped in to help.

Ian Batterton of Landcare said: “One of my team told me that they had read about the vandalism and when the club approached us about planting new trees, we were delighted to donate replacements.”

“We have worked with the club and the various organisations in the town for 30 years, planting trees on the Ridings, working on the Millennium Gardens and with some of the schools. When this kind of thing happens the community pulls together, and

Vandalised trees replaced it demonstrates that vandalism achieves absolutely nothing.”

The two trees were planted to commemorate long standing football club members Patrick O’Connell and Fred Hague. Their families were devastated when they heard that the trees had been damaged.

President of Chipping Sodbury Town FC Jeff Harper said: “That anyone could stoop so low as to vandalise the memory of two men that had given so much back to the club is beyond our comprehension.

Thanks to Landcare’s generosity we have been able to replace the trees which have now been planted.”

POLICE are warning people to be on their guard after a bogus salesman tried to dupe a householder in Frampton Cotterell.

The potential victim challenged the man who walked off.

The incident happened at about 8.40am on 13 November when a man called to a property in Meadow Mead.

The man claimed to be from a security company and said there had been burglaries in the areas and he needed to check any cash or valuables the householder had to ensure it was secure.

However the householder challenged the caller and asked to see identification.

The man said it was in his car and walked off but didn’t return.

The suspect is described as a white man, about 5ft 9ins tall and large. He was wearing a blue suit with no buttons on the jacket and some form of headgear.

A police spokesman said "We are keen to hear from anyone else in the Frampton Cotterell area, who may have been approached by the same man.”

"We recommend you use a door chain, especially if you have unexpected callers.

"Always act to see photo identification, especially during darker evenings. Genuine callers will always come back at a more suitable time during the day when a relative or trusted friend or neighbour can also be with you.”

"If there are any concerns at all, don’t let them into the property and call us."

Cashpoint crisis addressed by chamber A MAP of shops that offer cash back or have cash machines inside has been published by Chipping Sodbury’s Chamber of Commerce.

Cash points have all but disappeared after the closure of bank branches on the High

Street. There is a cash point inside the Spar store with another planned at the Post Office in Cotswold Vintners.

Councillor Rob Creer and Sodbury Town Council have worked with the Chamber on the map, which is posted on

the notice board by the Tourist Information Centre, as well as in many shops.

Joint Chair of the Chamber, Andrew Webb said: “We hope this map will help ease the problems visitors are having

getting cash when they visit the town since the banks withdrew all of their machines. However we will continue to work to get a 24 hour access machine installed back into the town."

Rotary raise funds at Victorian Day A TEAM of Rotarians have raised more than £1000 at Chipping Sodbury’s Victorian Day by selling Mince Pies, Mulled Wine and Hot Chocolate The Rotary stall was one of dozens that lined the High Street offering a wide variety of food,

gifts and goodies for sale to the hundreds of visitors.

Rotary President Rich Little said: “With the help of superb pies from Hobbs House Bakery, we’ve offered this traditional fare for several years. Judging by the number of people who come to

us every year, I think that we’ve now become part of the tradition that Victorian Day brings to the town”.

Money earned from sales at the stall goes back into the community helping to fund local charities and individuals in need, plus some national charities.

Yate Academy head singled out as ‘inspirational’ THE headteacher of Yate Academy has been praised at a South Gloucestershire cabinet meeting where school improvements were being discussed.

Education chiefs were unveiling 17 steps they may take to tackle the “toxic cocktail” of reasons why schools are struggling in the area.

South Gloucestershire councillor Gareth Manson, who has led a cross-party taskforce to tackle the problem, said education is being hit by a “toxic cocktail” of poor performance, low funding and a relative lack of good or outstanding schools.

But Council Leader Toby Savage singled out the work of Yate Academy’s headteacher, Isabel Ambrose as ‘inspirational’ and ‘extremely impressive’. He said: “How do we bottle what she is doing and other excellent practice and ensure that those who need help are given it?”

At the meeting, Yate North councillor Mike Drew blamed some of the problems on the academisation programme, which he said had caused schools to deteriorate since he

became a governor in 1985.

But Cllr Manson said the taskforce had attempted to avoid making political points and instead focused on the pragmatic steps to take.

The group has drawn up a list of recommendations it feels that the council should adopt to boost results. It includes the council investigating why other authorities with similar levels of funding perform better and copying those initiatives.

If feels head teachers, chief executives of multi-academy trusts (MATs) trustees or directors, chairs of boards and members of MATs should report back to the council, while the council should remaining proactive in scrutinising the performance of academies even though they are outside its direct control.

South Gloucestershire schools are among the worst funded in England, and the council has tried various initiatives in recent years to improve educational attainment but with limited success.

n STROUD AUCTION ROOMS YET again jewellery put the sparkle into the December sale at Stroud Auction Rooms, with rings and bracelets taking up a number of spots in the list of highest selling lots.

Star of the show was a 1930s Cartier platinum ring set with alternating Asscher and emerald cut diamonds, which sold for £6,000.

Not too far behind was an 18ct gold ring set with an emerald cut emerald surrounded by diamonds (£3,400); an 18ct gold ring set with three round cut diamonds (£2,200) and an Art Deco platinum ring set with a round cut diamond and diamond-encrusted shoulders (£2,050).

Watches made their usual good showing with a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 18ct gentleman's automatic wristwatch going under the hammer for £5,200, a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 18ct gold ladies wristwatch making £2,700 and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control gentleman's triple calendar automatic wristwatch selling for £1,500.

School again!

Now I may have said this before, but I do believe that every day’s a school day. Well at least in my sphere of operation anyhow. I guess it’s a mind set, perhaps you could say even a way of life. I just love meeting people you see, chatting and learning. Every day.

Without fail.

We’ve recently had four optometry students with us, two in Henleaze and two in Fishponds, to experience life in an optometry practice. They’re studying at the new UWE Optometry School. It’s a super course, with a key element of the learning being the practical aspects of actually caring for patients. As it’s a Bristol based course I’m biased of course, but I know a few of the clinical and academic team and they really are very good at what they do.

It reflects in the quality of their

students - you’ll see for yourselves in the years to come!

Perhaps it’s not only what we learn but also what we do with it that really counts. For example I attended a dry and watery eye training course to gain my dry eye certificate in 2013. My own experience of sore then watery eyes when using a VDU prompted me to undergo the additional training (and even an exam!). I followed this with additional learning from research papers on the finer details of how to diagnose and then effectively treat the symptoms our patients came to see us with.

The process of learning to diagnose and then treat eye and vision conditions is a continuous one. We were one of the first in the area to offer in-depth eye imaging scans which has taught us (and our patients!) a great deal about their eye health and vision. It’s really a shared learning process. Come see us and we’ll show you more detail than you’ve probably ever seen before!

Markets and fairs of Yate & Sodbury For many people today, the farmer’s market is a shopping experience which complements our more regular retail trips to our local high street or supermarket.

We are more likely to purchase Greek tapenade or Artisan bread than trade farm livestock or sell our garden produce. In past decades however, the market was an important part of the local economy on which farming communities depended.

The exhibition "Markets and Fairs of Yate and Sodbury" will open at the end of January 2019 and aims to cover a period of 800 years. It will include their importance in Medieval times

to their metamorphosis into the farmers' markets and fun fairs of today.

In the mid-19th century livestock markets proliferated when the relatively prosperous Victorians could afford to eat meat regularly. The success of the markets continued into the 20th century. Many older local residents remember with fondness the livestock and produce markets, which met regularly in both Yate and Sodbury.

For many people in the area, the local markets were an important part of the local economy. Sodbury, in particular, was transformed on market day as animals, pens and cars lined much of the High Street. Local farmers came to Sodbury and Yate markets in great numbers in the earlier 20th century and it was an important social occasion where the farming fraternity could meet together; pubs like the Oak in Sodbury and the Railway Inn in Yate were

popular drinking holes.

The farming economy had changed so much by the 1950s and Yate market endured a slow decline, limping on until the closure in the late 1970s. Sodbury by contrast, closed in 1954 as regulations surrounding High Street markets ended over 700 years of market activity on the High Street. Chippenham and Gloucester became the nearest markets.

Appeal for dog Yate pupil wins Christmas walkers to help elderly card competition A CHARITY which helps elderly and terminally ill people to look after their pets is seeking volunteer dog walkers in Chipping Sodbury.

A volunteer is urgently needed to help walk two ten year old Staffy/Jack Russell crosses called Leela and Molly.

The Cinnamon Trust is a national charity which aims to keep owners and pets together for as long as it can with the help of volunteers. The volunteers can walk dogs, take pets to the vet, clean litter trays, pop into an owners’ home to feed or play with their pets, and foster them if the owner goes into hospital.

Many elderly people become very worried about how their pets will be cared for if they become ill or infirm and feel that their only option is to re-home them.

SEVEN year old Nylah Milton-Oxley, who goes to Broadway Infant School in Yate, has won a competition to design a Christmas card. Her main prize was tickets to ‘We the Curious’ in Bristol, but she also had her design printed onto cards. They were sent out to clients of the firm who came up with the idea, The HR Dept Bristol, North Somerset and Bath.

Headteacher Juliet Lambert said: “It’s a wonderful thing for Nyla to have her design printed into so many Christmas cards and it’s been lovely for the children to focus on a creative, festive competition.

We’re excited to see the printed versions of the cards.”

Rugby club boosted by council grants CHIPPING Sodbury Rugby Club have upgraded their floodlights after receiving a grant from South Gloucestershire Council.

Chipping Sodbury RFC were awarded just over £169,000 to upgrade and extend their existing floodlights.

The money came as part of an agreement with developers to invest in improving facilities to benefit the community within the area.

Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism Cllr Paul Hughes said: “This funding will hopefully get more people active and lead to further sporting success on the field.”

Sodbury spokesperson Graham Stait said: “This Section 106 funding, and having the newly-installed floodlighting, has given us

World premiere of new pantomime takes to the stage A NEW production written by a member of the Thornbury Musical Theatre Group is coming to town in February. ‘King Arthur the Pantomime’ includes all the necessary elements of a family favourite; audience participation, comedy, catchy songs and romance.

by Mark Collins, it features lead character Arthur, a lowly squire who longs for Lady Guinevere to return his love. This takes him on a journey full of dangerous adventures, and a quest to find the Holy Grail. But being a pantomime, things are not going to go his way.

The show is at the Armstrong Hall from 20 to 23 February at 7.30pm and with matinees at 2.30pm on the Friday and Saturday. Tickets are bookable online at www.tmtg.org.uk with no booking fee.

n NEWS FIREFIGHTERS in Yate have teamed up with South Gloucestershire Council to offer a free health and wellbeing programme.

The programme, aimed at overweight children aged four to 16, will aim to promote physical activity, boosting mental health and wellbeing and improving nutritional intake.

Ten of the sessions will be run from Yate fire station, where children will get to try fire drills and hose running, keeping fit with firefighters and get handson with firefighting equipment.

The Reach campaign is providing fun and interactive activities to boost confidence and wellbeing and a weekly physical activity session with lots of games, movement and fun.

It also aims to educate children and families on preparing healthy snacks, how to use nutrition labels when shopping and ideas on how to improve sleep.

n AROUND THE W.I Chipping Sodbury Morning WI THE end of 2018 gives us a wonderful opportunity to think about the things we have done over the year, explain a little bit about our WI and reflect on the fun we have had, the new things we have learned and the new friends we have made as a result of belonging to Chipping Sodbury (morning) WI .

We have enjoyed our 25th Birthday, which we celebrated firstly with a lovely lunch then a little bit later in the year with a wonderful birthday tea in a posh hotel in Bath. We have had some absolutely fantastic speakers, we have been out on trips, we have hosted really great coffee mornings, run a handicraft group, knitted poppies for the Chipping Sodbury Remembrance Display, supported and raised funds for a local charity, laughed a lot and had a really good time. We also won a prize at the Hawkesbury Show, established a book club and formed a skittles team.

Our Institute meets in the morning, which is unusual for WI Groups, but we feel it allows women

who for a variety of reason find it difficult to attend evening meetings to come along and be that very special person, ‘a WI lady’.

We are an absolutely lovely bunch and we like to think that we ‘Inspire Women’ to do a variety of activities and meet the challenges that we face every day. We like to help people where we can and support our members when life becomes a little bit difficult for them.

We are proud that Chipping Sodbury (morning) WI has managed to obtain a very good balance between enjoying ourselves, learning new things and supporting our community, so do come along and join us, we will make you very welcome and you may find you cannot resist becoming one of us.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand style SAABs, 1994 - 2012 Many years ago, Alexi Sayle correctly observed that if a SAAB was being used in a TV or film car chase, it would inevitably be crashed. And this is because used SAABs have always been cheap to buy, if not to run. Pre-1994 SAABs are regarded quite rightly as classics, whereas ‘modern’ GeneralMotors era SAABs are recycled Vauxhalls with quirky dashboards.

Not quite: If it were as simple as that, I’d advise you to buy cheap used Vauxhalls but I’m really not going to doing that. So pay attention at the back: SAABs are, even seven years after they went bust, a used car bargain. That SAAB quirkiness is unfortunately diluted by their association with GM though, and the pool of well looked-after mint examples is shrinking every day. So which SAABs can you still buy and run as a daily driver?

Starting with the first of the GM era, the 1994 900, I’d only ever give a second look to the Viggen performance model. 225hp from a 2.3 litre heavily turbocharged engine sourced originally from Triumph in the 1970s, underpinned with a Cavalier chassis. Sounds awful, and what’s more the front wheel drive setup can’t handle all that the power. But it came in a lovely electric blue with matching leather seats, so you’ll look really great as you slide sideways into the ditch. £5k will get you a well maintained example, but watch out for sludge deposits collecting in the sump and then blocking the filters. A brave choice.

The much better 9-3 is still available in numbers, and this month’s test model is the very pretty convertible. If any modern SAAB is going to end up as a classic, this is it. Personally I’d avoid the diesel engines, and instead for

very little premium you can have an Aero 2.0 litre with 210hp. £3k starting price for a good one. If you can stomach the fuel and tax bills, the 2.8 V6 sourced from Australia is superb and was eventually turbocharged up to 280hp and given four-wheel drive. That is the one to have, with a manual gearbox. Buy facelift examples from late 2007 onwards.

SAAB also made the sensible 9-5 in saloon or vast estate form, which whilst similar underneath to the 9-3 was different enough to sell well up until 2009, when it was replaced. The Aero model uses the same 2.3 litre from the Viggen, and by the time it got a facelift in 2006 SAAB had solved the aforementioned sludge problem.

260hp, 30mpg and the comfiest heated and ventilated seats I’ve ever sat on. An expensive car new that tried to compete with the BMW 5 series, the 9-5 suffered from

obvious GM corner-cutting. My 9-5 Aero had interior fittings lifted straight from a Vauxhall Corsa, a cynical and short-sighted decision that takes some beating. 9-5s go for back-of-the-sofa money today.

SAAB spare part production and sales are managed by the Swedish government, which is reassuring until you see their prices. Vauxhall used to order the bits for you, and would even fit them if you asked nicely but I don’t expect that will carry on for long now that Vauxhall is owned by Peugeot. Factor this into any buying decision. Sadly in my experience it was the SAABspecific parts that tended to go wrong. The ignition barrel (located by the handbrake) failed, which meant I couldn’t start the car reliably. SAAB also have a unique engine management system that sits on top of the spark plugs (called ‘Trionic’); it fails after about 80k miles and the part costs £200.

Take heart though – because of chronic underinvestment SAAB struggled to launch new models and instead used what cash they did have on finessing the existing range. So when you buy a late model SAAB (and Bristol has several specialist dealers to call on) you are actually getting a pretty well sorted car. Ignore the slightly iffy interior details and enjoy instead a slice of safe and swift Swedish automotive history. If you have enough patience and pockets deep enough it’ll end up a classic for sure. They also happen to go like hell.

This year, we particularly want to make sure that anyone who is aged 65 years and over (including those becoming age 65 years by 31st March 2019 has the flu jab.

They will receive the new enhanced vaccine that contains extra ingredients designed to help develop a stronger defence against flu.

Each year, in the UK, up to 10,000 deaths are attributable to flu, particularly amongst the elderly population and those with existing medical conditions.

Early vaccination is encouraged because it takes about two weeks after the jab to gain optimal protection. The flu strains can

change from year to year, so you need to have a flu vaccination every year.

Even if you only get a mild reaction to a flu virus, you can still pass it on to others. To attain what is termed ‘‘herd immunity’’

we need to vaccinate enough of the population to protect us all.

Your jab counts; it protects you and contributes to protecting everyone else, including the vulnerable in our community.

SOMEONE has calculated that the third Monday in January each year is the most depressing day of the year. The date is calculated through combining various factors including the weather, the level of our debt and our ability to take positive action.

I’m not convinced that one day is more depressing than any other, but there is no doubt that many of us feel low in spirits in January.

How can we find the strength to cope with such times whenever they come?

It makes all the difference when we trust in God and his care for us. Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Our Father in heaven, give us each day our daily bread.” They lived in a subsistence society in

which people were dependent on the crops that they grew on their land or what they caught each day. As the family ate their food, they would give thanks to God for supplying their needs for another day.

It is good to bring all our worries and anxieties to God. Jesus told the people they could learn valuable lessons from the birds and the flowers. He said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not much more valuable than they? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour and spin. Yet I tell you not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. So, do

not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

So when we feel low in spirits, especially at this time of the year, it is good to pray to God and to ask him to help us by providing all our needs. We can ask him to help us not to worry about tomorrow, but to do what we have to do today. As each day comes to an end we can thank him for bringing us safely through the day.

I still pray a prayer I learned in infant school, “Lord keep us safe this night, secure from all our fears, may angels guard us while we sleep till morning light appears.”

Severn Tolls

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

Nobody – not one single resident in our community, will have to pay to use the Severn Bridge in 2019.

After many years of campaigning, the tolls were finally scrapped on 17 December.

The Severn crossings are local iconic landmarks which have served commuters, businesses and communities in England and Wales for over 50 years. The tolls to cross them had been in place since the first Severn Bridge was opened in 1966, when the fee was two shillings and sixpence. (Which equates to about 12p in today’s money.)

Having lived in South Gloucestershire all my life, the tolls have been a point of contention, or just plain annoyance, for as long as I can remember. Around 25 million journeys are made across the two bridges annually, and the charge of between £5.60 and £20 has been a source of contention with local

businesses, commuters and visitors to Wales for years. They represented a drag to economic growth in the South West of England and Wales, and both a physical, and therefore psychological barrier between our two regions.

I have been fighting inside of Government for these charges to be scrapped since I was elected, and I am delighted this has now been delivered. There can be no clearer signal that our local community is now more open for business than ever before.

This move is designed to help the community with the cost of living, and make commuting, family trips and travel between our two communities much more affordable.

Now that the tolls have been removed, the councils across the west of England and Wales will be working with Governments to make sure that any potential

increase in traffic as a result of more people using the crossings is mitigated. This historic change also gives me the opportunity as the local MP to push for even more improvements to our road network, such as finally delivering junction 18A onto the M4 and pushing for improvements to Junction 14 on the M5.

Scrapping the tolls is both an historic moment and a great opportunity. It means motorists keep more of their own money, and allows more visitors to drive across the M48 Severn Bridge and encounter some of the most striking and welcoming towns and villages in the world. I would challenge anyone to drive across the now toll-free Severn Bridge, make the crossing into South Gloucestershire, and not be bowled over by its beauty.

Brexit and pets Words to either frighten you or even bore you, but our outcome will affect the ability that we have taken for granted to travel back and forth to the continent with our pets.

DEFRA has issued new advice that anyone thinking of travelling with their pets should discuss this with their vets at least 4 months before travelling.

The most likely outcome is that we will have to return to rabies blood testing which must be carried out at least 30 days after vaccination. Unfortunately, recently quite a few have not had a vaccination update and are failing the tests.

So please talk with your vets about your travel plans and prepare for our unknown future as best as possible.

Ade Williams got the award at the 10th annual GP Awards at a glitzy ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster hotel in London. Ade is the lead pharmacist for Abbotswood Pharmacy in Yate.

Organisers said, “Mr. Williams wowed the judges with his commitment to delivering innovative services to his patients and achieving remarkable results – including delivering 80% of interventions in a pilot pregnancy advisory service targeting at-risk patients. He particularly impressed with his pharmacy’s ‘pulse in the pub’ initiative, which saw his team monitor the blood pressure of people drinking in local pubs.”

n RECIPE OF THE MONTH

New beginnings, new attitudes processed meats like sausages and ham. So, one of my intentions is so eat more vegetarian food.

My recipe of this month ticks this box and just as an extra bonus, it’s super healthy and cheap. It makes a filling lunch, especially if served with good bread. Or, if you’re serving it as a starter you may want to leave out the beans.

Either way, it’s a simple, delicious soup that’s a welcome change after all the rich fare of Christmas.

Red Pepper and Bean Soup

Serves 2 Ingredients: • Red peppers - 3 • Fresh plum tomatoes – 6 • Garlic cloves – 2 • Mixed beans – tinned-210g (I like to use red kidney beans, but the choice is yours.

• Orange – ½ juice and zest of one half.

• Tomato puree – 1 tbsps • Fresh basil –small bunch, chopped.

A LOT of people hate January for all sorts of reasons. We’ve put on weight over the festive season, our bank balances are depleted and usually we get the worst of winter weather. But January is also the perfect time to start all over again with a clean slate.

I personally don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but I do have what I call “intentions”. It’s my intention to do at least 4 exercise classes a week.

Because food is such a passion for me, these good intentions follow through into my eating habits. We are all being urged to eat less meat of all sorts, especially

squeezing and add this and the puree to the blender.

7. Blend until quite smooth, but still with a bit of texture.

We don’t want baby food! If you don’t have a blender or processor use a potato masher.

8. Pour into a saucepan. Add the drained and rinsed tin of beans.

9. Gently heat the soup through, stirring to incorporate the beans. Make sure it is hot before pouring into soup bowls.

10. Serve garnished with torn basil leaves and the orange zest.

Cook’s tip: If you don’t like beans you can add 2oz (50g) dried macaroni or small pasta shapes instead. The local Tesco sell these. Cook them for 5 mins in boiling water. Rinse with cold water to stop them sticking together. Then add to the soup at point 8.

Care home contracts changed Big increase in EU residents despite Brexit after warnings from watchdog

THE number of EU citizens living in South Gloucestershire has increased by 60 per cent since the Brexit referendum, officials believe.

The latest estimates published by the Office for National Statistics show that, in the two years since June 2016, the number of EU migrants living in the area rose by 5,000, from 8,000 in 2016 to 13,000 in June.

The percentage increase is much greater than for the UK as a whole, where the number of Europeans rose by 9 per cent to 3.7 million. And it is in contrast to Bristol, where the number of EU citizens has remained steady at around 27,000.

The greatest rise in South Gloucestershire was among EU migrants from Western European countries and from Romania and Bulgaria, with an estimated 100% increase in two years.

But the 4.7% of South Gloucestershire's total population made up of European citizens is below the UK average of 5.7% and Bristol’s figure of 5.9%.

The number of migrants from non-EU countries living in South Gloucestershire also rose, from 5,000 in 2016 to 7,000 in June. In Bristol, migrants from non-EU countries numbered 21,000, up from 18,000 in 2016.

The estimates are based on the ONS’s Annual Population Survey.

They count EU citizens living at private addresses and students in halls of residence whose parents live in the UK. Students with parents living abroad or migrants living at communal establishments, like hotels or hostels, are excluded.

All the numbers were rounded by the ONS to nearest thousand.

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has transferred its care contracts to a new provider after warnings from the health watchdog.

Allied Healthcare has been rescued by new owners but the authority has pressed ahead with a contingency plan to ensure the 84 affected residents were properly cared for.

Before the buyout, the Care Quality Commission had written to councils saying the firm had “failed to provide adequate assurance regarding future funding”.

Councillor Ben Stokes, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for adult care, said the market was vulnerable but the situation was unlikely to be

repeated. He said: “We have a statutory duty, as well as some very vulnerable people we want to ensure are properly provided for. We have negotiated with potential alternative providers.

We’ve been able to appoint Nobilis. They are taking forward the responsibilities referring to Allied.”

Cllr Mike Drew said Cllr Stokes’ response was “complacent”. He said he hoped South Gloucestershire Council was involved in lobbying at a national level to get more funding.

Council leader Toby Savage said the authority lobbies through the Local Government Association.

Yate primary school makes dramatic leap up league tables ABBOTSWOOD Primary school has leapt 78 places in a league table of pupil’s progress to sit in third place out of all primary schools in South Gloucestershire.

Last year’s result of 81st was near the bottom, but this year saw dramatically improved scores for progress, particularly in reading, where it was the best school in the authority, and in maths, where it was equal best.

There was also good news for St Mary’s Catholic Primary School which was in 14th place, up from 38 last year and Yate Academy, which rose from 43rd to 16th.

It was less good news for Raysfield Junior School in Chipping Sodbury which is is at the bottom of the rankings for pupil progress.

Tyndale Primary School is also in the bottom five in South Gloucestershire.

A SPECIALIST centre that cares for people with Multiple Sclerosis in South Gloucestershire is looking for volunteers.

The Brightwell, formally The West of England MS Therapy Centre, has been caring for people with, their families and carers in Bradley Stoke since 1985.

The centre has a variety of roles available including the physio department where volunteers can train to operate the oxygen chamber, as well as roles that support the team with community development and events or with the reception team.

The Centre offers physiotherapy, exercise classes and oxygen treatment. They have a dedicated team of professional therapists providing acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy, foot health and a Counselling Service.

It costs £380,000 to keep the Centre running every year and currently less than 1% is received from statutory funding.

New buses for community transport group GREEN Community Travel is to have its oldest vehicles replaced thanks to a share of £800,000 in government funding. The charity provides essential travel and social trips to help people retain their independence if they are unable to use public transport.

The new vehicles will reduce emissions and ongoing maintenance costs and use less fuel. They’ll also offer a more comfortable journey for passengers.

The grant was the result of a successful bid by South Gloucestershire Council to the Local Growth Fund. It was awarded by the West of England Joint Committee (WECA).

Chair of Green Community Travel, Cllr Marian Gilpin said: “There are many different groups of disadvantaged people

in our communities, and many who can’t get to a bus stop, or use a regular service.

Organisations like ours attempt to assist them all – having a tremendous effect in

combatting loneliness and isolation.”

“We are truly grateful to receive this funding as it is otherwise difficult to assemble enough money to be able to replace our vehicles and continue to perform these valuable services.”

Council Leader Cllr Toby Savage, who represents the Authority within the West of England, said: “I am proud to see this funding go towards new vehicles across South Gloucestershire. This is the largest single ever investment in our community transport fleet and is a testament to the value the administration attaches to community transport and the role it provides across the district.”

Four Towns and Vale Link Transport and Kingswood Community Transport will also benefit from new vehicles.

n SPORT YATE Hockey Club have received a £2,000 grant after support from Tesco shoppers in the ‘bags of help’ scheme.

The money went to buy protective kit to support the development of goalkeepers, and to provide additional training materials such as new hockey balls. This has benefitted both the junior and adults sections of Yate Hockey Club both of which train and play matches at the Yate Outdoor Sports Centre (YOSC).

St Nick’s hold on to book quarter final spot ST NICHOLAS U13s took on Warmley Rangers in a GFA Cup Tie, with the chance to progress to the final stages of the competition at stake.

A goalkeeping error gave St Nicks a break through, with Warmley scoring an own goal and the home side began to dominate, creating a host of chances that went begging.

A second goal did eventually come, Haydn beating the keeper following an impressive run to score for St Nicholas.

The second half saw an immediate improvement from Warmley, but despite having to defend for long periods, St Nicholas managed to snuff out any threat.

Warmley were not to be denied though and they scored a fantastic goal to reduce the deficit and make the closing stages of the game very tense.

St Nicholas, scored again, only for it to be chalked off for offside, but they held on for the win and booked a Quarter Final tie against AEK Boco.

Yate Town continue to set the pace YATE Town entered the run up to the Christmas period riding high in the league as they continued their impressive start to the season.

A visit to mid-table Winchester resulted in a battling 1-0 win. The home team created several good opportunities throughout, but were thwarted by some excellent defending, good goalkeeping by Lewis Thomas and wayward finishing.

Yate took advantage of these lapses in the 83rd minute when Joe Guest won the ball in midfield, passed to Sam Kamara who interchanged passes with Olly Mehew before sliding the ball to the tireless Guest who finished from close range to score the decisive goal.

One of the favourites for promotion Cirencester couldn’t knock Yate off their stride as they produced one of their best performances of the season to register a 2-1 win in a match that was a great advert for non-league football.

After an opening period in which both teams came close, The Bluebells took the lead midway through the first half when Jack Twyman’s volley gave Yate the lead. Ben Brooks came close to increasing this lead with a fierce shot which the Cirencester ‘keeper pushed onto a post. Cirencester equalised when Alan Griffin scored from close range after Lewis Thomas had parried Bennett’s original effort.

Yate’s visit to local rivals Paulton Rovers ended their unbeaten away record. Yate started very slowly and conceded an early penalty, which Jack Ball slotted home. Although the ten men exerted considerable pressure in the closing stages, Rovers, who included six former Yate players, held on.

Yate played their third successive match against local opposition when Larkhall Athletic visited Lodge Road. The match was played in extremely difficult conditions as the very

strong blustery wind nullified most attempts at passing the ball and it was no real surprise when the match ended goal less.

Yate have a busy January programme, including home matches against promotion rivals Street and Evesham United.

Town’s good first half of the season has seen a significant increase in attendances at Lodge Road, and Yate are hopeful that this encouraging trend will continue in the New Year.

An 18-12 defeat at Old Bristolians - their second in December after a narrow reverse to Gordano earlier - has left Sodbury in danger of being cast adrift from the leaders in the Tribute Western Counties North League.
