Minor injuries plan revealed

Yate school top of the class in GCSE improvement league THE best GCSE exam results in the history of Brimsham Green School in Yate made it the most improved school in South Gloucestershire.

When the results were revealed, they showed that 61 per cent of pupils achieved at least five top grade passes at GCSE or equivalent level, including in the important subjects of English and maths.

The school also celebrated its students recording a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level.

Meanwhile, Chipping Sodbury School announced that 75 per cent of its older students gained three good A-levels.

The school also said the number of teenagers getting a large number of the highest A* and A-grades in GCSE exams had “grown impressively”.

Yate International Academy was also pleased that 47 per cent of pupils got at least five top grade GCSEs, including English and maths. Main story Page 15.

Minor injuries pilot scheme planned for GP practices A PILOT scheme aimed at improving minor injuries services in South Gloucestershire is set to be launched.

Health bosses propose to make a decision on the two-year pilot when they meet at the end of September.

If it goes ahead, an increasing range of health care will become available at GP surgeries, making it easier for people to get help closer to home.

But with concerns raised recently about the future of Yate Minor Injuries Unit (MIU), the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) stressed the pilot scheme would complement existing services at the MIU, as well as those at Southmead Hospital.

The CCG plan will involve practice-based nurses, supported by GPs, running minor injuries services.

Extra staff and resources have been pledged to provide the necessary extra capacity to deal with injuries such as minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries. Sprains, strains, cuts, grazes and bites will also be treated.

However, more serious injuries, including anything requiring immediate plastering or crutches, as well as major problems such as severe breathlessness, severe abdominal pain, severe chest pain or strokes, will still be dealt with by A&E services.

The proposal is all part of efforts to reduce unnecessary visits to hospitals. GP practices have supported the pilot in principle and the CCG has asked the public for comments before it decides whether to go ahead with the scheme.

Dr Ann Sephton, deputy clinical chairwoman at the CCG, said: “We believe our proposal is the best and most cost-effective option for improving local access to minor injury services.”

Although the scheme will offer weekday-only appointments from 8.30am-6.30pm, options for an out-of-hours service are being considered. The CCG also hopes to have a new X-ray service that would give quicker results.

During the pilot, feedback from patients and local people will assess how it’s working, its cost and clinical effectiveness.

Yate MIU opened in 2010 but its provision has not led to a cut in demand on local A&E services and its X-ray facility is only open on weekdays.

Some people also turn up with conditions that can be treated by a GP or should involve a hospital visit.

POLICEMAN Chris Rogers, whose patrol area includes Chipping Sodbury, has been named a community hero in an award scheme.

PC Rogers received a Pride Award from Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens – one of a number of people recognised for their outstanding work.

Nominations came from members of the public, with PC Rogers put forward for his “brilliant, honest and non-biased” approach to policing.

A local family who nominated him said they wanted him to be recognised for his high standard of professionalism and the empathy and compassion he showed when dealing with them.

They said: “We have never met such a genuinely nice person who is as sincere as Chris. Our family hold him in very high esteem.”

PC Rogers, who is a response officer, said: “I am surprised and delighted to have been nominated. I was simply doing my job listening and helping members of the public. It means a lot to me that it has touched the local community.”

MP goes on tour of constituency RECENTLY elected Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall went on a tour of 35 towns and villages around the constituency to meet as many people as possible.

He also held pop-up surgeries at venues such as Tesco in Yate, at Chipping Sodbury Festival and the South Gloucestershire Show.

Among the villages visited were Little Sodbury, Old Sodbury, Iron Acton and Latteridge.

Mr Hall said he was concerned that some constituents did not feel sufficiently engaged with politics and did not want to attend official appointments in his office.

New career for former MP and pensions minister Steve Webb FORMER Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb, who lost his seat at the General Election earlier this year, has a new job.

The longest serving pensions minister has been appointed director of policy and external communications at Royal London - a mutual life, pensions and investment company.

He is due to take up the newly created role in early November after the job was approved by the advisory committee on business appointments.

But parliamentary rules prevent him from any direct lobbying activity for the first two years of his appointment.

Mr Webb first became a Liberal Democrat MP in 1997, having previously been a professor of social policy at Bath University, and became a minister in the coalition government.

Having been involved in designing policy in pensions areas such as automatic enrolment, he said: “I am looking forward to seeing how it is implemented on the front line.”

Phil Loney, Royal London’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted to welcome Steve to Royal London. His strong background in public policy and experience in government will be invaluable.”

The appointment comes despite a policy regarding lower charges on workplace pensions attracting criticism from Royal London, which described it as “headline grabbing”.

Homes development site in Yate scrutinised by council planners PLANNERS were visiting a controversial site for new housing as Yate and Sodbury Voice went to press.

South Gloucestershire councillors were asked to tour the plot off Cambrian Drive in Yate, where Woodstock Homes want to build 16 houses and two flats, before the proposal is determined at a later date.

Under the scheme, a bungalow in Cambrian Drive will have to be knocked down in order to gain access to what is currently a landlocked piece of ground enjoyed as open space and used as a play area.

Yate Town Council has opposed the plan and more than 90 comments have been received by South Gloucestershire from residents who are also fighting the application.

There are concerns about the loss of open space, an increase in traffic to the area and the number of homes planned for the site.

The town council said it was a “well used piece of open space” and it was essential to keep it open.

It also said the development would affect the amenities of the properties either side of the proposed access and lead to the loss of existing on-street parking space.

Residents said there was enough new building going on in Yate – pointing to the North Yate new neighbourhood plan – and claimed they had been told no more open space in the locality would be built on after the Cambrian Green Court extra care development for the elderly was built more than four years ago.

ANY owners aren’t really sure about what goes on ‘out the back’ at their local vet practice as most pets are dropped off in the morning and then collected later in the day. The majority of animals we admit are in for neutering, but we also see many for dental treatment or lump removals. The rest of our case load is made up of further diagnostics such as blood tests, x-rays or ultrasound scans, as well as an array of emergency cases. We also have more complicated orthopaedic operations in on some days.

On admission a nurse or vet will go through the consent form, highlighting any specific recommendations. These might include pre-anaesthetic blood tests, which can help us to screen for underlying organ impairment. This blood sample will be collected from your pet’s neck or foreleg, so we will need to shave some fur in this area to find the vein. Samples are analysed on our in-house machine, meaning we get the results promptly. If there are any problems we can always phone you to discuss before we proceed any further. We will often place a small catheter in a forelimb to deliver drugs (and intravenous fluids if required), again shaving a small area.

relaxed, we can then induce them, usually with a drug given intravenously. Once asleep we place a tube down their airway to allow anaesthetic gases to be delivered, which keep them under anaesthetic during the procedure. Your pet is monitored throughout their surgery, with regular checks being made and recorded by the nurse.

Once the surgery has finished we gradually wake them up again, monitoring them closely, removing the anaesthetic tube from their airway. We try and keep them as warm as possible during this period with the use of heat pads and blankets.

Many patients will receive additional pain relief and possibly other drugs such as antibiotics, depending on the procedure. The nurse or vet will talk to you when your pet is discharged in the evening to discuss post-operative instructions. We usually see your pet back for follow up appointments too to so we can check on their progress.

APPLES galore will be at the heart of the next community event in Abbotswood, Yate, with local people invited to help with the planning.

The third Abbotswood Autumn Apple Day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 3.

It will be free to attend and among the many events proposed to take place will be a number centred around the favourite fruit.

But plans are still being drawn up and anyone who wants to have a say on how the day will run can go along to a meeting in Corrine’s Café on Wednesday, September 9.

Known as Abbotswood’s Community Conversation, it will start at 2pm to give people the chance to share ideas, make plans and agree tasks.

Rob Elliott, the community development worker recently appointed

Mr Elliott will be in post for three years as a result of a Yate priority neighbourhood grant being secured by the action group.

He will work alongside the Abbotswood team, including volunteers who came forward as the result of a community plan being published for the area, to help make improvements.

Calling time on one of Sodbury’s longest running businesses LONG established Penny Farthings Gift Shop in Chipping Sodbury is about to close with the retirement of owners Penni and Dave Tanner. The couple have traded in the High Street for more than 30 years and here Penni reflects on her time in the retail business, offering some advice to newcomers.

“FIRST of all I would like to thank our lovely, loyal customers who have supported Penny Farthings Gift Shop over the past 33 years. It has been an amazing experience, sharing in their celebrations of life - the weddings, engagements, births and so many other occasions.

“Our trusty saleswoman, the late Pamela Buckeridge - who taught me everything there was to know about retailing - gave wise advice at the start of my career to never discuss politics, religion or finance. When she retired in 1992 she had completed a total of 56 years in retailing in Chipping Sodbury.

“There were many other characters that formed an important part of our daily routine, with their stories, their advice and their endless generosity of spirit.

“It has been a privilege to have been a part of the local business community that was instrumental in launching Victorian Day, the Flower Festival (now Sodbury in Bloom) and Chipping Sodbury Festival, as well as the revival of Sodbury Chamber of Commerce, an essential part of local business.

“We are very fortunate to have such a wide selection of retail outlets in Chipping Sodbury, many of which

contribute towards the local community with donations, raffle prizes and sponsorship, giving their time and expertise and often participating after a busy day when time is at a premium.

“They play an essential part in the town, making it what it is today. The proof of the pudding is all around us. It is up to everyone to provide the essential main ingredient - our continued support, business and custom.

“The Christmas lights also evolved from enthusiastic retailers, businesses and residents alike. Comments such as ‘You will never get anything moving in Chipping Sodbury’ and ‘Chipping Sodbury has nothing to offer’ proved to be totally wrong.

“As a keepsake, we are compiling a book of memories of Penny Farthings Gift Shop

Families enjoy fun in the sun at free Yate park event

HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a free day out at a community event in Brinsham Park, Yate.

Organised by the town council, the event included a treasure hunt, fun dog show, live music and a tug-of-war contest.

Students at Brimsham Green School ran a fund raising stall for the Hosanna 2016 project – the school supports Hosanna School in Uganda – and an activity craft tent was also open to the 500 visitors who turned up.

South Gloucestershire dog warden Celia Bourne judged the pets and local saxophonist Mark Austin entertained the crowd.

Councillor John Ford, Yate’s deputy mayor, said: “Residents of all ages had a fun, sunny Sunday afternoon in an old village fete tradition.

“Mark Austin’s opening number, Summer Time, was perfect for the day and location by the lake.

“Our thanks to Mark and to the Friends of Brinsham Park for the ideas put forward for the day.”

Shopping centre anniversary inspires new mural for Yate

THE Sodbury Players are building up steam for their latest production – a stage version of the Ealing comedy classic The Titfield Thunderbolt.

Members of the cast even paid a visit to the Warmley signal box to promote the production, which opens on September 16 and runs for four nights in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

A MURAL recording the history of Yate was unveiled during celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the town’s shopping centre.

Sue Bruten designed the mural based on ideas from local schoolchildren at The Ridge Junior School and St Mary’s Primary School and other members of the community. The youngest contributor was just five-years-old and the oldest was 95. The mural depicts Yate’s history from the Domesday Book to today. Meanwhile, a copy of an earlier mural marking the shopping centre’s opening in 1965 is still displayed in East Walk.

The new mural represents the development of both the town and the community, with the pupils asked to design tiles giving their impression of the current shops and what they liked about Yate.

Bike challenge raises thousands of pounds for hospice in memory of Jelf colleague A TWO-day cycling challenge helped a team from insurance company Jelf raise more than £20,000 in memory of a friend and colleague.

The 150-mile ride was organised by the Chipping Sodbury-based firm and took the cyclists from Cardiff to Hampshire.

Together with a fun day at its head office, it was the latest fund raising event run by Jelf in aid of St Peter’s Hospice.

It brought to £30,000 the total so far collected by the group to remember Emma Wygladala, who died of a rare sarcoma of the womb at the age of 38.

Emma, of Fishponds, had worked for Jelf as a business support manager and was cared for by hospice staff in her final weeks.

All that jazz at the New Inn to celebrate fifth anniversary SOME of the UK’s best known jazz musicians will help celebrate five years of jazz evenings at the New Inn at Westerleigh.

Yate Riverside attracts more interest from top chains as Nando’s negotiates for space RESTAURANT chain Nando’s is involved in talks to occupy a unit at the new Yate Riverside complex.

The company has submitted planning applications for a customised restaurant frontage but a lease is yet to be finalised.

Yate Riverside is an extension to the town’s shopping centre, with a cinema, shops and restaurants to open at the site off Link Road.

Andy Lowrey, Yate Shopping Centre manager, said: “We are currently in legal negotiations with Nando’s, which is in the process of taking one of the units.

“Obviously, as soon as we are able to confirm whether it has signed up, we will do so.

“Nando’s was by far the most requested restaurant when we undertook the public consultation for the scheme so we are delighted it wants to join the other great names in the town centre.”

Exam successes celebrated at Yate and Sodbury schools BRIMSHAM Green School in Yate had two big successes when A-level and GCSE results were announced.

Students recorded a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level, with A*, A and B grades making up 41 per cent of all passes.

The school was also the most improved in South Gloucestershire with its GCSE results, with 61 per cent of pupils attaining at least five good passes at GCSE or equivalent level, including in the core subjects of English and maths – an increase of nearly ten per cent from last year.

Head teacher Kim Garland said the A-level results were an indication of the school’s sustained improvement and as well as students now taking up university places, others had secured sought-after apprenticeships.

Of the GCSE results, she said: “These are the best results in the school’s history and reflect our students’ potential, as well as their hard work.”

At Chipping Sodbury School, 75 per cent of students gained three good A-levels.

Head teacher Gareth Millington said although the overall average for GCSE results fell to 51 per cent of pupils getting at least five of the highest grades in their subjects, including English and maths, the number with a large haul of A* and A grades had “grown impressively”.

He said: “On the whole, these are sound results. Our overall average went down for the first time in some years but the school has become very popular of late with many students joining us late into their school careers.”

He said late arrivals did

not do so well as others but they showed “fantastic rates of progress” since starting at the school.

Yate International Academy saw 47 per cent of pupils get at least five top grade GCSEs, including English and maths.

Principal Paul Skipp said, “We are delighted to see the dedication and hard work of our young people has culminated in a very positive set of results.”

He also welcomed results in the sixth form, where vocational results more than doubled compared to last year. In total, 87 per cent of students achieved the expected standard.

Mr Skipp said there was more success in the average point score, which measures a student’s overall achievement.

This year’s rating of 597 was the highest it had ever been in the academy’s history.

Playgroup keeps good Ofsted Sodbury stones installed rating after latest inspection at Smarts Green A CHIPPING Sodbury playgroup has maintained its rating of good after a visit by an Ofsted inspector.

Raysfield Pre-School Playgroup operates four days a week in Dodington Parish Hall, Finch Road, with 43 children on roll at the time of the inspection.

Ofsted’s Angela Cogan said in her report that teaching was of a good standard and children made good progress.

Staff were well led and there were rigorous procedures in place that kept youngsters safe.

She found staff and management had built good relationships with parents and other professionals, which had a particularly positive impact for children with additional needs.

In her recommendations, Ms Cogan said the children should get outside more in order to have more fresh air, exercise and outdoor learning experiences. She also said there should be more challenge in the children’s play.

Parent classes to be hosted at Baptist Church A SERIES of free sessions for parents of primary age children are about to start in Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church.

The six sessions will be run by four experienced childcare professionals, starting on Monday, September 14, at 7pm.

National charity Care for the Family is behind the event and each session will give those attending an opportunity to share experiences.

A PROJECT to put a ring of stones on Smarts Green roundabout in Chipping Sodbury has finally been completed.

Stones donated by aggregates firm Hanson were moved onto the roundabout a few months ago.

Now local businessman Jim Fannon and his son, James, (pictured) have put the stones into position and the next step will be to plant bulbs to provide some spring colour.

Quarrying has played a major role in the area for many years and the Sodbury in Bloom team felt it appropriate to have a ring of stones in a prominent location to remind people of the connection.

Group member Julia Bernau said: “It has taken some time to move the stones into their final positions but we hope the circle will become a landmark feature to be enjoyed by everyone for many years to come, perhaps as long as Stonehenge.”

Contact the Elderly has appealed for more drivers to give up a few hours a month to take one or two older people to local tea parties.

The free get-togethers are held on Sunday afternoons for small groups of over-75s who live alone, providing them with regular and vital companionship.

Each guest is collected from home by a volunteer driver and taken to the house of the party host.

But the group running in Yate is at risk of closure due to a lack of drivers.

Volunteer support officer Amanda Hall said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people but this lifeline is currently under threat in Yate, due to a real shortage of volunteer drivers in the area.

Record year for Sodbury Sportive A RECORD 960 cyclists took part in the annual Saddleback Sodbury Sportive - ten per cent up on last year’s event.

Participants had the choice of three routes to follow, either covering 30, 60 or 100 miles.

With £18,800 raised in 2014, organisers at Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club are confident of surpassing that sum this year, with the money going to various charities.

New features for 2015 included cyclists being timed using GPS over certain segments of the course, a steel band playing at the finish and riders offered massage and yoga on completion.

Chair’s chosen charities TWO charities will benefit from Cllr Erica Williams’ year in office as Chair of South Gloucestershire Council.

The recently appointed Chair will raise funds for Avon Valley Railway in Bitton and Wild Place Project, a Bristol Zoo-run attraction based near junction 17 of the M5.

Cllr Williams said: “I will be supporting two South Gloucestershire-based charities during my term in office; the Avon Valley Railway and the Wild Place Project.

Diabetics to get new service for their condition from South Gloucestershire team A NEW community diabetes service will be introduced in South Gloucestershire in the autumn.

Under the system, support will be offered to diabetics for their condition in their own home or at a clinic.

People will initially be referred by their own GP but it is hoped they will eventually be able to refer themselves.

The diabetes community service will be run by Sirona, which already provides a number of publicly funded health and social care services in the district, and it has launched a questionnaire to find out what diabetics want from the service.

Sirona said the aim of the service was to improve the quality of life for individuals and enable them to live better for longer in their own homes, avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and give them as much control and choice over managing their condition as possible.

Sunshine brings bumper crowds to the South Glos Show THE second South Gloucestershire Show has been declared a huge success after visitors flocked to the showground in Henfield.

Organisers say visitor numbers were “up significantly” on the inaugural show last year. The show itself was 30 per cent bigger than 2014, and benefited from good weather over the weekend. The man behind the show, Darren Hawkins told Yate & Sodbury Voice; “We feel the show has evolved from last year and has definitely formed an identity of its own; it was very well received”.

A MUCH needed service that helps people with mobility problems in Yate is facing a funding crisis.

Shopmobility has been running since 2006 in Yate Shopping Centre, allowing people to maintain their independence while using the shops and other facilities in the complex.

They can hire a battery-powered scooter or a wheelchair to get around the centre, with wheelchairs also available for longer term loan.

Over the years the scheme has been helped with grants from a number of organisations, such as local councils, as well as donations.

But National Lottery funding has ended and those who run the service say it is now facing an uncertain future.

Although South Gloucestershire Council has given help, it is not enough to ensure the scheme can continue at current levels of service.

Shopmobility said it was making great efforts to secure funding and its future by applying for grants from other sources, seeking donations from supporters and working with those running community transport to attract more users from other parts of the district.

It said its users had spoken of the “excellent” and “marvellous” service, with some saying they would be housebound without it.

Others said they would be unable to get around the shops if they couldn’t use a scooter.

Shopmobility project worker Sheridan Crew said: “There continues to be a real need for people to have access to a scooter or wheelchair given the difficulties they experience with mobility.

“The impact of long term physical problems or sudden illness, such as a stroke or accident, can leave people feeling very socially and emotionally isolated.”

The Shopmobility office is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9.30am-4pm and on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am-2pm.

WHEN my family and I are eating, there are often two other companions sitting on the floor by the table.

Our two Staffies, Lucy and Lottie, stare up at us with doleful eyes hoping to receive titbits of our meal and, because I have absolutely no will power when it comes to them, they often do well out of me. Anything handed down to them from my plate, they devour without a paws for thought (sorry, couldn’t help myself).

However, the same food placed in their bowls is usually treated with utter contempt.

I’ve often wondered why this is? I mean it can’t taste any

Thought for the month with Paul Harding different, can it? Perhaps it’s simply because they like feeling included in the meal we are having rather than having to eat by themselves.

Human beings too want to be included. We want to feel part of what’s going on, not pushed off to the sidelines or treated as somehow less important than others.

Humans are social beings, made to connect with others, not be alone. In recent years our society has, sadly, often promoted the needs of the individual over the wellbeing of whole communities and this has, in my humble opinion, eroded our sense of inclusion. The result of this emphasis is seen in our current epidemic of loneliness.

The Bible has a lot to say about inclusion, the importance of community, of being family, of looking out for one another and treating each other with mutual

respect.

God has gone out of his way to help us connect with him in a deep and meaningful way and those that do, he calls his “family”. Jesus himself said that, as a rule of thumb, we should “treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves”.

So as we go about our daily lives, let’s seek to widen our thoughts to include those around us.

Among the acquaintances

and colleagues of most of us, there are people who will tend to get sidelined who, if we ever think about it, must often feel unimportant.

Perhaps today is a day for noticing people to whom this might be happening and trying to find a way of including them.

English language business reaches landmark first anniversary A BUSINESS teaching English to speakers of other languages is celebrating its first birthday with the launch of three new courses in Yate’s library.

Zoe Drew, of Frampton Cotterell, started English Language for Everyone with the help of the Prince’s Trust.

She now offers more than 40 courses, including sessions for babies and toddlers, as well as people who need to be familiar with English used in business and parents looking to help their children with schoolwork.

The latest courses will run for eight weeks, with start dates on September 7 and 8.

Zoe will also be running three drop-in sessions in September and October as part of South Gloucestershire’s annual Discover Festival.

She said: “Many of the students who studied with the company in its first year have already gone on to enjoy wide-ranging success, from finding their first job in the UK to getting into the film-making industry. Two of the company’s students have set up their own businesses.”

Dementia and isolation in South Gloucestershire

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

AS a local man who has worked alongside the Alzheimer’s Society in South Gloucestershire, I am very aware that Dementia, and the social isolation it can cause is one of the biggest challenges facing parts of our community.

Dementia sufferers are having to cope with the effects of physical damage to the brain as well as the emotional isolation and this can be extremely difficult for family, friends and neighbors, who need as much help and understanding as we can give.

People can be particularly vulnerable to isolation in some of our more rural communities, where the access to public transport and other local facilities are not as strong. Some people can be left alone for days at a time without coming into contact with anybody. This isolation is a real concern.

Over the coming months, I will be hosting a series of Dementia Friends events across South Gloucestershire in conjunction with Bluebird Care and the Alzheimer’s Society.

These events will aim to give an understanding of what it is like to live with dementia and to spot signs in other people both at home and in the community. They are very active and informal and no previous knowledge of dealing with dementia is needed.

I will hold one Dementia Friend event a month and try to get around as many of our rural communities as possible. I will also be writing to local Post Office workers, Bus Drivers and other customer facing roles in our community, inviting them to come along to ensure we do everything possible to make people aware how to spot signs of Dementia, and how to act

positively when they are noticed.

The Alzheimer’s society hit its target of one million Dementia Friends around the UK earlier this year and has now set an ambitious target of creating four million Dementia Friends by 2020. I hope our area can lead the charge on reaching that target.

The more people who understand and are aware of dementia, the less fear and isolation there will be by sufferers, and those living with the illness are more likely to feel included and supported within their communities and can continue to live independently for longer.

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

HE kids are back to school, the holiday season is over and I know a lot of people feel a little bit sad when September comes. But for me, September, and the approach of autumn, means new fruits and vegetables to savour.

I’ve also been terribly busy helping organise the Chipping Sodbury Food and Drink Festival on September 11 and 12. We are celebrating the wonderful produce we have in our area, including drinks for the first time.

Pear trees have been grown in Gloucestershire for centuries.

So this lovely hearty casserole of pork and pear cider is a particularly appropriate dish for people in the Cotswolds to enjoy.

You can prepare it ahead and, like all casseroles, it tastes even better the day after being made. If you like, add small pieces of carrot or parsnips to cook alongside the meat. Ring the changes by using apples and ordinary cider or even 500mls of ginger ale for a completely different flavour.

Perry Pork Casserole

Serves 4 Ingredients: • Pork chops – 4, large • 1 bottle of Pear Cider – about 500 ml • Pork or vegetable stock - 1 cube • Fresh Rosemary - 3-4 large sprigs • Brandy or Calvados (optional) - 4 tbsps • Pears - 4 small ones or 2 larger ones • Cornflour or arrowroot - 4 tsps • A little olive or rapeseed oil for browning chops • Unsalted butter- 25g(1oz) cut into small knobs • Salt and pepper to season Here’s what you do: 1. Get a frying pan or griddle pan hot.

2. Spritz the pan with a little oil and brown the chops.

3. Add about ½ bottle of the pear cider and the Calvados if using. (The pan will sizzle so stand back!)

4. Add the stock cube and enough hot water so that the meat is just covered.

5. Bring to the boil and then turn down to a simmer. Add the rosemary and season with salt and pepper.

6. Cook for at least 45 mins so that the meat is tender.

(Longer if your guests are delayed won’t hurt). Check the meat from time to time and top up with the remaining cider as necessary.

7. About 15 mins before you are intend to serve, prepare the pears. Peel, core and sliced into pretty slices.

8. Move the chops to one side to create a space on the pan and then dot the pan with the knobs of butter. Place a piece of pear on top of each knob of butter and allow to caramelise.

9. Cook for a further 10 mins or until the pears are tender.

10. Mix the cornflour or arrowroot in a cup with a little cider (or cold water if you’ve used all the cider) to form a smooth paste.

11. Add a tablespoon of the hot sauce from the pan to the cornflour paste. Combine well and then add to the pan.

12. Stir and allow to cook for a further 10 mins.

13. Serve with a timbale or mound of rice and seasonal vegetables.

Celebrating our historic past – Chipping Sodbury Heritage Trail WE open the door this month on the Quakers Meeting House in Brook Street, one of six properties in Chipping Sodbury that feature a commemorative plaque and form part of the town’s heritage trail.

The trail can be followed with the help of a map that is available at the entrance to Hatherell’s Yard, while a trail guide is available at the Tourist Information Centre.

Each plaque gives just a brief glimpse of the life of its property and its previous owners. This month we feature a property that dates back to 1692 and is the site of an ancient burial ground.

The Quakers Meeting House in Brook Street In 1772 the bailiff and burgesses of the town agreed to contribute £10 towards building a bridge over Broad Brook and mill stream in a move to bring the road from Wickwar into Chipping Sodbury via Church Lane instead of Brook Street. It is believed that pilgrims used the route and the pilgrims’ symbol of a scallop shell can be found close by.

The scallop shell is thought of as a metaphor for the pilgrim.

However, it also served practical purposes for those on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. The shell was the right size for gathering water to drink or for eating out of as a makeshift bowl.

The meeting house was built as a Quaker chapel in 1692 following a visit by Geroge Fox, founder of the Religious Society of Friends. From as far back as the seventeenth century the house has been used for meetings of various groups, including the Salvation Army, the Society of Friends and the Women’s Institute.

The Salvation Army came to Chipping Sodbury in 1882, initially as an outpost of the Bristol Citadel. The outpost eventually became a corps in its own right and had, itself, outposts in Yate, then a tiny village, and in Acton Lane.

Records show that in 1884 the Chipping Sodbury corps collected the grand total of £9 4s 4d during the Christmas period, as reported in the War Cry of July 4, 1885.

The organisation, however, failed to take a great hold on the town and the corps closed in late 1885 or early 1886.

Up until 1932, the house was used as a Quaker chapel and records show that in the 1940s soldiers were billeted in part of the building. It has been a private residence since the 1980s.

Volunteers invited to celebrate tourist information centre anniversary A CELEBRATION tea is being planned to mark the 20th anniversary of Chipping Sodbury’s Tourist Information Centre.

Founded in August 1995 by the councils of Sodbury, Yate and Dodington, the centre has been a valuable asset to the area, helping both visitors and locals through its work.

As well as providing information to tourists, it publicises local events and sells tickets to annual favourites such as the Sodbury Beer Festival.

It is based in the clock tower and staffed entirely by volunteers and a part-time co-ordinator, who have invited anyone who has ever been involved with the service to afternoon tea in the town hall on Friday, September 11, from 3pm-5pm.

IN this year of high profile anniversaries and events, it is sometimes useful to remember there is so much more to local history that we can access.

Oral History Archive What I like to think of as a selling point for Yate Heritage Centre is free access to local history information. As well as historic images on our website, we can now offer more than 2,500 local history photographs in our gallery computer covering nigh on every aspect of our history over the last 150 years.

Perhaps less well known is our outstanding oral history archive, which is now available to play and read.

There are upwards of 200 oral history interviews accessible for the visitor. Inevitably perhaps with 20th century social history, there are gaps in our knowledge, which oral history can try and address. Oral history can also provide colour, opinion and vivid description lacking in other historic records. As a result we have tackled a myriad of different subjects, from the bombing of Parnall Aircraft to modern day immigration.

Some of our best oral history was derived from the working conditions of Newman’s foundry.

This material is evocative and far removed from our modern day working experiences. David Woodsford worked in Newman’s foundry between 1959 and 1963 and said: “The floor was covered in ball bearings. The floors were filthy a mixture of earth and concrete had been broken up over the years by having hot metal poured on it and people scuffing around

Blast from the past: You can hear about the Yate industrial history at the Heritage Centre on it. The metal overflowed and formed droplets and of course that was everywhere - you could slide and fall around.

“Harry Andrews had a smaller bucket. Probably, I don’t know, a quarter of a ton of molten iron I suppose that was on a monorail system. You would just push it around and just shout for people to get out of the way.”

This is a tiny fraction of the many good interviews available.

The Yate District Oral History Project has also been recording in this area since the late 1980s and its material will be made available to the public via

the heritage centre and other locations in the future. Watch this space.

Delight for Nick at British Open but event ends in injury for top Kiwi and spectator CHIPPING Sodbury eventer Nick Gauntlett earned a top 12 place in the British Open at Gatcombe Park with El Grado, a horse he bought in Australia at the end of last year.

The pair had one showjump down in the feature class of the prestigious Festival of British Eventing to add to their dressage score but then jumped clear around the cross-country track.

Although incurring time penalities across country, their unblemished jumping over the solid fences resulted in a rise up the leaderboard.

Nick said: “El Grado completed a fantastic crosscountry round – very exciting for the future.”

The final phase of the Open, with Gatcombe’s undulating ground adding to the challenge, always produces drama.

But this year’s event nearly resulted in a tragic outcome for leading rider Andrew Nicholson, who had been well placed to

retain his Open title from 2014.

Having jumped the last of the 26 obstacles with Cillnabradden Evo, the pair had a crashing fall, resulting in Andrew receiving a severe neck injury.

The Wiltshire-based New Zealander underwent an eighthour operation at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to repair the damage, later revealing he could have been paralysed.

He said: “I have been incredibly lucky. My surgeon, Mr Jeremy Reynolds, told me that the injury I sustained to my neck would have caused paralysis at the time of injury, in 98% of cases. I was extremely fortunate this did not happen.

I underwent an eight hour operation where they repaired the fractures and stabilised my cervical spine. This procedure in itself was not without risk, and I cannot thank enough, the team of spinal surgeons at the John Radcliffe hospital, for what they

Mixed start to the new season for Yate Town FC

THE start to the new season for Yate Town FC resulted in a 1-0 win against pre-season favourites Evesham Utd and three points for a committed team display.

In a match that produced few chances for either side, it was a 77th minute winner by Yate substitute George Box that decided the game.

Fielding a new look team, Yate have since experienced mixed fortunes, going on to lose by a single goal to old rivals Cinderford Town.

Under the Lodge Road floodlights, Cinderford won the match with a powerful Josh Nelmes header after just half an hour.

Despite a much-improved second half performance from the home side, Yate were unable to find an equaliser in what turned out to be the usual close encounter between the teams.

The next visitors to Lodge Road were free scoring Winchester City. Having scored 13 goals in their opening two matches - with Warren Bentley attracting national interest with nine of this total - Yate managed to contain the visitors and secure a point with a credible goalless draw.

A sub-standard display at Bishops Cleeve resulted in the most disappointing performance of the opening fortnight.

A goalless first half on a difficult playing surface produced few chances and the away side failed to capitalise on their opponents being reduced to ten men in the opening 15 minutes.

At 46 minutes Yate took the lead when Darren Edwards slotted home a penalty. However, the advantage was short lived when Cleeve equalised almost

The ten men went on to win the game with a headed goal and a final minute penalty that left Yate despondent.

But Yate bounced back from their disappointment when they secured a convincing 4-0 victory away to local rivals, and league newcomers, Slimbridge FC. Darren Edwards gave Yate the lead once again from the penalty spot after Alec Fiddes had been tripped. Just before the half hour, Edwards netted his second, reacting quickly after Fiddes’ shot had been saved.

Yate completely dominated the game but had to wait to extend their lead until early in the second half, when Jake Jackson was allowed too much space and fired home.

Two minutes from time Yate deservedly made it four thanks to substitute Jack Camm, who put the gloss on an excellent afternoon’s display.

New coaches take up role with Yate Hockey Club's ladies A NEW set-up for Yate Hockey Club ladies' teams sees the arrival of two coaches in time for the new season.

Carolyn Rolleston and Jo Thomas bring regional and international experience to the club, as well as a strong understanding of the technical and tactical aspects of the game.

An important season lies ahead for the women players, with the 1st XI looking to make a genuine push for promotion from premier one of the West region division, the 2nd XI looking for promotion into North division and the 3rds aiming for another season of consolidation in Brunel 2 division.

The club said it was excited about the prospects of all its teams for the forthcoming season and was looking to attract new members to the women's section.

Players train every Tuesday from 7pm-9pm at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex.

Hockey festival set to get new season under way at Yate YATE Hockey Club is preparing for its annual season opener, with the HockeyFest event to be held at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex (YOSC) on Saturday, September 5.

The club runs adult and youth teams, with more than 200 playing members at a variety of levels of the game.

The men’s teams train on Wednesday evenings at YOSC, with the first team playing in the Conference North Division.

Yate Ladies train on Tuesdays at the complex, with the first team in West Premier League 1.

Sunday mornings at YOSC are given over to junior training of under-10s, under-12s, under-14s and under-16s.

The HockeyFest event allows the club to invite existing members and potential new players to enjoy a day of fun and competition. The day starts with breakfast in the clubhouse from 9.30am and an opportunity to cheer on the Ladies 1st X1 in a match against Gwent.

A junior camp open to those aged from five to 15 gives members the chance to sign up for the forthcoming season and to be involved with new members in an open training session given by adult players.

Yate men’s hockey team A sixes tournament in the afternoon is open to players aged 14 and over, with the £5 entry fee donated to the club president’s chosen charity.

Food will be available all day, a bar opens at noon and there will be inflatables for everyone to enjoy. A social event from 6pm-8pm will bring the event to

a close.

Summer hockey success for Pucklechurch PUCKLECHURCH are celebrating a top of the table performance this summer, finishing the league programme in style as Lisa Whitehead reports.

The top of the league table has remained extremely close with everyone wanting to take the title of Summer League winners and with only 4 games remaining the Pucklechurch girls were as keen as ever to take it.

After a very impressive performance against Yate, winning 5-1, we knew our next game would be a tough one. A top of the table clash against City of Bath. It would prove to be a very fast, close game with both sides going at it hard. Everyone gave it their all but the final whistle blew with neither team able to get one past the goalie and it finished 0-0. With this result it became even closer, so we had to make sure we won our next game - against Jaspers.

Forward Rhian Phillips either had had a bad day at work or was determined to make up from not scoring last week as she had a stormer. With some cracking individual play and of course some help from her fellow teammates setting her up, she bagged herself a hatrick. Jaspers continued to battle on however and take a few shots themselves but Puckles defence proved too strong and the game would finish at 3-0 to the girls in yellow.

With this win behind us and with our big goal difference, we knew we couldn’t be caught and would be crowned winners of the Summer League with one game remaining. With a strong 13, our last game seen us face Bristol Ladies. Not wanting to sit back and take it easy, everyone played their socks off.

With superb passing, control and teamwork, forward Emily Pollock put us in the lead early on. A second goal would

then be scored by captain Lisa Whitehead - a cracking strike from a short corner. Emily would bag herself a second to make it 3-0 at half time. With all the girls on such a high we continued the pressure in the second half and with a great ball into the D from Whitehead, it was met by

With 12 matches played we scored a very impressive 41 goals and only conceded 10, making this our best summer league to date and take the title ‘Champions’ for the first time.

First rugby sevens tournament for Chipping Sodbury proves a winner PLANS are being drawn up to make a rugby sevens tournament in Chipping Sodbury an annual fixture after the success of the inaugural event, Naomi Iles reports.

The town’s rugby club organised and hosted the competition, which involved 12 senior men’s teams from as far away as Plymouth and Cardiff.

They competed in three pools to reach four semi-finals - Cup, Plate, Bowl and Spoon - ahead of the deciding matches.

Home team Sodbury Otters narrowly lost out to the Smiths 12-17 in the Cup semi-final, with the winners going on to a clinch the tournament 19-17 against Shredded Ducks.

Avon 7’s beat Frampton, only to lose out to Cardiff 7-33 in the Plate final, while Sodbury-based SG23 defeated Old Cryptians 31-0 in the Bowl semi-final before being on the losing side against Avonmouth in a 37-0 drubbing.

Bath team Wallcott went through to win the Spoon final against the travelling UPRFC. Organiser James Bennett said: “Despite a stressful buildup, the day ran smoothly and proved to be a fantastic starting point for what we hope will be a bigger and better event in years to come.”

He said the teams included mixed competitive sides, local players looking for a run-out and

There was a relaxed, fun atmosphere and the weather was mostly kind, giving people the chance to enjoy picnics, a barbecue and an outdoor bar.

Presentations were made in the clubhouse before a party with live music from Angel Heart and

a DJ. Mr Bennett said: “Chipping Sodbury RFC would like to thank all of the volunteers that made the day possible, the teams that attended and the spectators for showing their support.

“For the first event of its kind we were incredibly pleased with the result. We are looking

to expand next year with the possibility of incorporating a cider festival into the day and introducing a ladies’ side to the tournament. We are already excited about the future.”

Mixed fortunes for Sodbury as tennis club continues to compete THE Summer Leagues may be over, but the action continues at Sodbury Tennis Club into the autumn with new competitions running. Steph Gold brings us the latest from the courts.

Sodbury Tennis Club had five men’s and three ladies teams playing in the Avon LTA Summer Leagues this season.

This ended on 17th July after an series of ten Friday night matches for each team against other local clubs.

The men’s first team was

unlucky to be in a tough Division 2 along with some of Bristol’s strongest clubs, leading to relegation. However, the ladies first team, also playing in Division 2, kept its place and will continue to play at the same standard next year.

The men’s second team fielded a strong team each week, winning its Division 4 league outright and gaining a well deserved promotion. The ladies second team wasn’t so lucky. Due to illness and unavailability it

was unable to sustain its Division 4 position and will be relegated for next season. The men’s third, fourth and fifth teams competed hard in Divisions 4, 7 and 8 respectively, finishing mid-table in each case, and will all play at the same levels next season.

The ladies third team narrowly missed out on promotion, having played competitively all season, only to miss out due to scores on the last night’s play.

Controversy, records and huge crowds at Castle Combe race day AN invasion of MGs, Seats and VWs made for a thrilling August summer race day at Castle Combe in the four home series rounds of competition.

Good weather drew big crowds, who witnessed some enthralling motorsport.

The sports GT series had Simon Tilling, in his Ligier, chase the Riley Mk XX11 piloted by Craig Dolby in the fastest race of the day.

Helped by hot track temperatures and a new surface, both drivers came within a whisker of breaking the outright lap record.

Of the 31 starters in the popular saloon championship, outright honours went to Gary Prebble in his Seat, with Charles Hyde-Andrews-Bird in a well fought second in his Renault Megane. Mark Wyatt in his Astra was third.

Yate driver Chris Hignell finished his fourth race of the season in his Fiat Punto, having achieved his fastest laps of the season in qualifying and in the race itself.
