Churchman speaks of his pride in response to refugee crisis The day the music RECTOR Ian Wallace has spoken of Yate’s “heart of compassion” as the town rallies to help Syrian refugees.

The Rev Wallace, who is team rector for the area, said he was proud to be working with Yate Town Council on ways to help those caught up in the crisis.

The council said it wanted to support refugees and is involved in planning a public meeting

to give individuals and groups the chance to work out how the community can best do that.

Meanwhile, South Gloucestershire Council said it would take in vulnerable people identified by the Government. It is currently investigating how it can house and support refugee families who are brought to Britain from refugee camps.

Organiser James Ball said: “We have been inundated with very kind offers of help and have received hundreds of bags of clothes, bedding and camping equipment.”

All change at recycling centres with cuts in opening hours OPENING times at the Sort It! centre in Yate are being cut as changes are introduced to all of South Gloucestershire’s recycling sites.

From October 1, people can only take waste to the four centres – the others are in Thornbury, Little Stoke and Mangotsfield - between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Until now, they opened 30 minutes earlier all year round and for six months of the year from April didn’t close until 6.30pm.

South Gloucestershire Council said the changes would help improve efficiency of the sites and deter non-residents and commercial users from using the facilities.

It is also planning to introduce a resident vehicle registration scheme in 2016 and an electronic van permit system. Giving permits for vans means people whose work van doubles as a family vehicle will be able to use it to carry domestic waste to the centres.

Under the new rules, South Gloucestershire householders will have to register their vehicles online, over the phone or at One Stop Shops to gain access to the tips, where an automatic number plate recognition system will be updated to implement the registration schemes.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the council’s communities committee, said: “Changing opening times at the Sort It! centres is the first step to making improvements to the sites and reducing the number of non-residents and traders using the facilities.

“After reviewing the number of visitors to the centres, we found there were very few people making use of the extended opening hours in the summer.

“The new opening times reflect the times that most people use the centres and also allows the Little Stoke centre to be open seven days a week instead of closing on a Wednesday.”

The committee agreed to the changes after a public consultation exercise carried out between November 2014 and February 2015.

It said the new times would now apply all year round except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Popular Yate summer playscheme told to improve after Ofsted inspection

AN annual summer playscheme funded by Yate Town Council has been told by an Ofsted inspector to improve.

The well-used scheme for primary age children runs for four weeks during the school holidays at the parish hall in Station Road.

Yate-based Children’s Playlink operates it for up to 40 children, who can enjoy activities such as arts and crafts, story sessions, sports and outdoor play.

But after an inspection by the education watchdog during the most recent holiday, it has been given a rating that requires it to improve. Inspector Dominique Allotey also said it did not meet legal requirements for early years settings.

Among her key findings, she raised concerns about meals, accident records and monitoring, although she also said children attending the scheme were happy and well behaved.

Ms Allotey said: “Staff do not ensure children have healthy, well balanced and nutritious meals. As a result, they do not effectively promote children’s health and physical development.

“The provider does not keep suitable records of all accidents, incidents and first aid treatment involving children because they give the records to parents.”

She said not enough information was obtained about children when they first started in order to fully meet their care needs and suitable places for

them to play quietly or sit and relax were not consistently provided. Staff also did not make use of meal times to develop children’s social skills.

Ms Allotey said the provider had a poor regard to self evaluation. It did not keep monitoring up to date and, as a result, had failed to identify weaknesses in practice.

She also said staff could not always follow policy and procedures for administering medication to children due to a lack of paperwork. That meant if children needed medication, they might not always be able to attend.

However, she said staff were positive role models and warm towards the youngsters. She said: “They reinforce rules consistently so children’s behaviour is good and children are happy.”

Information from children about their latest interests was regularly collected in order to meet their needs and youngsters enjoyed a suitable range of activities and play.

A statement from the town council said: “We will be expecting the provider to address all the issues within the report in preparation for next year’s scheme.

“These reports are really helpful in bringing new eyes to projects. We know lots of local young people greatly enjoy the scheme and are sure Children’s Playlink will be keen to use the report to make the scheme even better.”

Civic leaders and churches respond as refugee crisis grows A PUBLIC meeting is being organised in Yate to establish how best the town can help Syrian refugees.

Yate Town Council has publicly announced a wish to support the refugees.

It has since had a meeting with Yate’s team rector, the Rev Ian Wallace, and resolved to invite the community to work together so it can identify the best ways of responding to the crisis.

The public meeting – the date and venue yet to be announced - is being planned so people and organisations can consider ways of raising funds, making donations and organising collections and other events with the Red Cross to provide aid for those in need.

Yate mayor, Councillor Tony Davis, said: “Yate Town Council welcomes and supports initiatives being taken by churches and others locally to take an active role in supporting efforts to help the refugees from Syria.”

The Rev Wallace said: “I am so pleased that Yate Town Council has declared its willingness to respond to the suffering of those fleeing the war in Syria and am proud to be working with them.

“Since arriving in Yate, I have heard how this town responded to the needs of the Vietnamese boat people and am pleased that the town’s heart of compassion is again evident in wanting to help the Syrian people.”

Meanwhile, South Gloucestershire Council has said it will play its part in responding to the crisis by taking in vulnerable people identified by the government and helping to provide humanitarian support.

The council is currently assessing its capacity to house and support the refugees who will come to Britain and said it

would continue to work with the Government to ensure it was able to provide the services they will need.

It was also committed to working with local community and voluntary groups to develop and deliver an overall response.

Council leader Matthew Riddle said: “We have all seen and been disturbed by the images of suffering caused by the terrible conflict in Syria and wanted to know how we can help to ease that suffering. The community response from residents has been so heart-warming.

“We are recording the details

of individuals and organisations contacting us with offers of help through our contact centre and One Stop Shops.

“The council response will be to help accommodate and support our share of the refugees that the Government has said it will be bringing to safety in the UK from camps in the Middle East.

“While we await the details about who will come to South Gloucestershire and the support needs that they will have from the Government, we are ready to mobilise as soon as we are called upon.”

Babysitting lessons on offer for teenagers YOUNGSTERS who want to become responsible babysitters can join a course to be hosted by Chipping Sodbury Youth Club.

The course will be run across two evenings on October 6 and 13 from 6.30pm-8.30pm at the club in Hounds Road.

My pet is drinking excessively, should I be worried?

S

OME owners will bring their pet into us because of a change in their thirst or appetite. Increased thirst (polydipsia) is often picked up on because owners find they are topping up the water bowl more often or noticing that their pet is urinating more frequently. In some cases it might be because they have started having urinary accidents in the house.

A number of conditions can lead to polydipsia and we often need to do further tests to try and work out what the underlying cause is. In many cases increased thirst can be due to something straightforward such as a change in diet or hot weather, but in other cases we may need to dig a little deeper. As an owner you can help us with this investigation by measuring your pet’s water intake over a few days to get an average of how much water they are consuming. This allows us to calculate whether it is truly excessive for their weight/size or not. Also try and note their appetite and general demeanour and whether there are any other symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhoea. You could even try to bring a urine sample from your pet to the initial consultation. We can look at several things from a basic urine sample, such as measuring the concentration and checking for traces of blood or glucose (sugar).

Depending on the animal’s history and physical examination we may suggest a blood test as the next step. We sometimes send the urine to an external lab for additional tests, especially if we are suspicious of urinary tract infections or underlying kidney problems.

A general blood screen gives us an idea as to how well your pet’s organs are functioning. It can help highlight issues such as liver impairment, infections, kidneys problems and diabetes.

This allows us to recommend a specific treatment or may lead us on to further diagnostic tests.

We sometimes see underlying hormonal conditions that can cause polydipsia and these often require very specific blood and urine tests, which may be suggested based on the initial screen results.

The most important thing to remember is that it is best to get these things looked at early on, as many of the conditions that cause polydipsia can be successfully treated or managed.

As previously mentioned, the causes of polydipsia are very varied, so the best thing to do is bring your pet in so we can start the process of investigating further, discussing the reasons and the options at each step.

A CHANCE to try woodland crafts at a local nature reserve has been given the thumbs up by local children. Ridge Wood local nature reserve also gave local youngsters a chance to test their knowledge of woodland life.

Over 100 people attended the free event, organised by the Friends of Ridge Wood, and supported by Hanson Aggregates. There was a quiz trail through the woodland, which culminated in a forest glade where the children were helped to make willow crowns, twig pencils and air dry clay creatures as souvenirs of their day.

This was one of a programme of free events organised by the Friends of Ridge Wood for the local community and follows on from the successful Evening Chorus Walk, A Moth Discovery Evening led by local expert Ray Barnett, is taking place on Friday 2nd October as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s Discover festival.

Vets surgery celebrates refurbishment with charity coffee morning A LOCAL veterinary practice has held an open day and Macmillan coffee morning to celebrate the surgery’s new look.

Animal House Vets held the event at their Chipping Sodbury surgery. The surgery has recently completed a renovation which has seen a range of new equipment installed as well as fresh new decor throughout.

Visitors had the chance to look behind the scenes at the practice and see first-hand the new state-of-the-art facilities, as well as being able to get to know the staff.

“We’re keen to give our clients a ‘behind the scenes’ view of our new-look surgery in Chipping Sodbury”, says Mark Binns, Veterinary Director at Animal House Vets.

“It helps to show that the makeover is more than just a new coat of paint”.

Mark decided to combine the event with a Macmillan Coffee Morning.

Known as ‘The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, the event is run across the country to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity offers help and support to those suffering from cancer, their families and carers, throughout the UK.

LOCAL people can attend the annual general meeting of the organisation responsible for planning, buying and monitoring most healthcare services in South Gloucestershire.

The South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will present its annual report and accounts and there will also be presentations on local health topics, together with a question and answer session.

The CCG will also discuss its vision for the future of health services in the area and the challenges it faces.

Starting at 2.30pm on Wednesday, September 30, the meeting will be held at Cleve Rugby Club, Cossham Street, Mangotsfield.

A DAY nursery in Chipping Sodbury marked a special anniversary with a birthday celebration.

First Steps opened in 2005 with just seven staff. Ten years on and many families have passed through its doors, with more than 120 children currently being cared for by a staff of 25.

The nursery is based in Hounds Road and when assessed by education watchdog Ofsted

two years ago was rated as good.

Founder Hollie Dennis, who set up the facility with Clare Saphier, said: “The success of the nursery is due to the wonderful team who work well together and are committed to the children’s care and development.

It has been a privilege to see the children grow and develop.”

But it will include a mix of music, drama, lunchtime talks and events for children at a number of venues in the town.

It will be followed by the popular Severn Vale Arts Trail April 29 to May 8 - which comes under the festival umbrella and involves dozens of artists displaying their work in their studios or at shared exhibition

sites.

The festival’s artistic director, Shirley Sharp, said: “Having had another successful festival this year, we are now getting on with planning the 2016 event and are really looking forward to Tim Brooke-Taylor and Chris Serle coming to Thornbury.”

Meanwhile the annual children’s eisteddfod, which attracts entries from a number of schools in South Gloucestershire and is also run by a festival team, will be held in March.

King’s standard bearer at Agincourt to be remembered at battle anniversary event THE standard bearer of King Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt will be remembered in Wapley, near Yate, when it celebrates its links with Sir John Codrington.

A procession to Sir John’s tomb in the village’s St Peter’s Church will launch the event on Sunday, October 25, which is taking place during the 600th anniversary year of the decisive battle.

Wapley Agincourt 600 has been planned for months, with the church at the heart of a programme of activities to remember when English forces defeated a larger French army in 1415.

Knights and men-at-arms in full costume will be at a medieval-style encampment, there will be demonstrations of falconry and archery and visitors will see how mead was produced and stained glass made.

The procession to the church starts at 10am, with a specially

made embroidered cloth being used to dress the tomb of Sir John.

Costumed knights, longbowmen and ladies from the Richard III Society, the Plantagenet Society, the Company of Chivalry and others will then stand as an honour guard at the tomb throughout the day.

One-and-a-half million stitches were needed to complete the cloth, which was designed and made by seamstress Margaret Dutton of Staffordshire, with Bob Pritchard of the Richard III Society researching and embroidering the heraldic shields.

Dodington parish councillor Paul Hulbert said the event had been organised by a committee of local residents and four parish councillors.

He said: “We’ve been researching and planning this for a few months now but the arrival of the magnificent tomb

Ukulele orchestra to strike a chord with music fans AN evening of music and comedy has been promised when the Ukulele Funhouse Orchestra performs in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

A total of 14 ukuleles will be played at the concert, along with drums and bass, together with a hand-made bass banjulele.

The instrument was popularised by George Formby and the one to feature in the concert will be played by Jake Arnott.

He made the instrument himself from a drum and a bass guitar neck and said it sounded “a little like a double bass”.

Great War centenary exhibition opens in Chipping Sodbury AN exhibition looking at the impact of the First World War on South Gloucestershire will run until the end of October in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

The display commemorates the centenary of the Great War, which claimed the lives of more than 16 million people worldwide.

Featuring copies of material from local organisations belonging to the South Gloucestershire Museums Group, the area’s heritage forum and its twinning associations, it will also show how communities in countries twinned with the district were changed.

The event runs from Monday, September 28, to Saturday, October 31, and will be open each day, except Sunday, from 9am to midday.

It will also be open from 10am-8.30pm on Friday, October 23, for the South Gloucestershire Discover Festival.

Crossing and speed limits welcomed for Sodbury streets ROAD safety campaigners have welcomed a scheme to bring 20mph zones into Chipping Sodbury, together with a new pedestrian crossing at a busy High Street junction.

The crossing will be installed where Wickwar Road meets High Street, while the lower speed limit will cover a number of roads around the central part of the town.

Money for the measures has come from planning agreements linked to the Waitrose store development and new housing on the Barnhill Quarry site.

The funding will also pay for other traffic calming and road safety schemes such as speed tables and waiting restrictions.

But a planned pedestrian refuge at the top end of High Street was removed from the

project as a result of an objection from Sodbury Town Council.

Chipping Sodbury councillor Linda Boon said she was sorry to see it left out.

She said: “This is a wide piece of the High Street, with cars parked on both sides, and elderly people can find it hard to cross the entire road without cars appearing, even if the road is clear when they start.”

But welcoming the other measures, she said: “We’ve been working hard for years to get this through. The lower speeds should make the area much safer for residents and a nicer place to live, work, and shop.”

It is hoped to have some of the work completed before the end of this year and all of it done by the end of the current financial year.

VULNERABLE householders in South Gloucestershire whose heating is inefficient and costly will have new gas central heating installed after a successful bid for Government funding.

Council leaders in the district led a consortium of five local authorities that received more than £3.2 million for work to a total of about 1,000 properties currently heated by on-peak electric systems.

The least energy efficient homes will be improved first, getting the latest condensing combination boilers fitted.

Heather Goddard, chairwoman of South Gloucestershire’s communities committee, said: “We are delighted that our bid has been successful.

“The most vulnerable residents will be targeted first to ensure they are provided with heating systems which are fuel efficient. Not only will they keep their properties warm during the colder months but their energy bills will also be lower.”

Unexpected announcement ends Jazz Festival THE Sodbury Jazz and Blues Festival will not return in 2016 after the organisers announced they weren’t continuing the popular event.

The festival began in 2011 as a purely jazz event, but expanded last year to include blues artists. The likes of Kenny Ball, Jacqui Dankworth, Digby Fairweather, Chris Farlowe, Acker Bilk and His Paramount Jazz Band, Paul Jones & Dave Kelly have all appeared at the event.

It’s thought the decision to pull the plug came after the local Rotary Club withdrew its involvement. The festival’s website broke the

news under a headline that said ‘Thank you and goodbye’. One of the organisers, Stuart Hobday, wrote; “In answer to the people who keep stopping me and saying ‘I’ve heard a rumour….’, yes, it’s true. The Sodbury Jazz & Blues Festival has come to and end”.

“I know that a lot of people gained a great deal of pleasure from the Festival and other concerts and I, for one, will miss bringing live music to the town. Unfortunately, that will not now happen. Enormous thanks go out to all those who supported the events over the past five years”.

Relay for Life raises second highest sum in Yate event’s history

NEARLY £42,000 was raised through this year’s Yate Relay for Life – the second highest amount collected in the history of the ten-year event.

More than 320 people took part in the relay, held at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex to support Cancer Research UK.

It involved 23 teams of fund raisers spending 24 hours going around the track, with music playing to encourage them to keep going.

Survivors of cancer were also invited along to launch the event and complete a first lap of honour, while everyone gathered

at dusk to remember those who have died of the disease.

The £41,891 raised brings the total collected in the past decade to more than £314,000.

Helene Craddock, the retiring chairwoman of Yate Relay for Life, said: “Everyone who took part should be incredibly proud

Waitrose worries wiped out two years after Sodbury store opens CIVIC leaders in Chipping Sodbury claim the town has benefited from the arrival of the Waitrose supermarket, despite worries that it could hit existing traders.

The store opened two years ago at the Barnhill Quarry site, with a link through Hatherell’s Yard providing a pedestrian route between the premises, the car park and the High Street.

Sodbury Town Council said: “Despite initial concerns, the town has flourished since the arrival of Waitrose.”

There had also been worries about the number of spaces being provided for shoppers in the car park once the store was built.

But it appears a system of long term, four-hour and two-hour parking has operated satisfactorily.

Members of the town’s business community said before Waitrose opened, it had been thought inevitable that a supermarket would arrive.

Joanne Cox, of Hobbs House bakery, said: “‘We think Waitrose

has had a fantastic effect on putting Chipping Sodbury on the map and that it is a great addition to our already foodie town.”

Waitrose is part of the John Lewis Partnership, which said it was pleased with how the Chipping Sodbury store had been received by the town and how successful it had been.

Spokesman Craig Beaumont

said: “We’ve really enjoyed the past two years and believe that we have had a really positive impact on the local community.

“We are extremely proud that we’ve been able to gain such regular, loyal customers and we

are working hard to improve our customer service.”

Since opening, the company has also supported several community events, including the recent Food and Drink Festival, the Big Lunch, the Jazz and Blues Festival, and Sodbury in Bloom.

A token scheme introduced to the store has also already helped more than 70 local causes.

Report on new motorway junction launched by MP A REPORT looking at the potential for a new M4 junction was launched by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall at the House of Commons.

The Gateway2Growth report from Bath University highlights six key economic benefits of a new link, which would give easier access to the motorway for local residents and accommodate the area’s planned growth.

It said an 18a junction would address increasing residential and commercial

demands being placed on Yate, Coalpit Heath, Emersons Green, Westerleigh, Pucklechurch and the surrounding areas.

During the next ten years, it is anticipated that 7,000 new jobs will be created in the Emersons Green Enterprise Area alone.

Mr Hall said: “Lots of people I speak to recognise the need for improvements to the M4 junction to meet the current need for better infrastructure.”

Minor injuries pilot scheme welcomed by councillors HEALTH chiefs at South Gloucestershire Council have welcomed plans to test a new minor injuries service in GP practices.

As previously reported, a two-year pilot scheme proposed as a way of improving the service in the district is set to be launched.

If it goes ahead, an increasing range of health care will become available at GP surgeries, making it easier for people to get help closer to home and reducing the need to go to hospital A&E departments.

The South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) outlined its plans at a recent meeting of the council’s health scrutiny committee.

Under the proposals, minor injuries will be dealt with by practicebased nurses, supported by GPs. Minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries, sprains, cuts and bites will be among the injuries that will be treated. But more serious injuries will still be dealt with by A&E services.

Councillor Toby Savage, chairman of the committee, said: “Now that we have been able to examine more of the detail, it’s clear that this new service should benefit the whole of South Gloucestershire.

“Under these proposals, residents will have the convenience of being able to access minor injuries services through their local GP practice during working hours.

“Importantly, there is then a central role for Cossham Hospital to provide an out-of-hours minor injuries service.

“I think being able to go to your local GP practice for a greater range of health issues is a great step forward. This is a pilot and we will continue to scrutinise the CCG, particularly around appointment availability and X-ray.”

There have been concerns about the impact of the change on Yate Minor Injuries Unit but the CCG has said the pilot scheme would complement existing services at the unit.

Chloe faces the clippers to raise money for children’s charity A TEENAGER will have her long hair cut off to help children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or illness.

After seeing her mum, Sarah Hitchings, fund raising for charity for the past five years, 14-year-old Chloe decided she should also get involved.

So she will be joining in an event called The Big Shaun, which Sarah has organised for Sunday, October 4, in The George Hotel, Chipping Sodbury, from 3pm.

Sarah, of Yate, said: “I am very proud of her for doing this.

It was a very hard choice to make but her hair will grow back eventually.

“Ever since she was small, Chloe has had long hair. She has thought long and hard about it and has decided to have it cut of for the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair.”

Local hairdresser Shaun Burgham-Wilson will be brandishing the clippers and scissors at the haircut event, which will raise money overall for the Bristol children’s cancer unit.

People have been invited to be sponsored to lose their locks, although under-18s will need permission from a parent or carer.

Open air classroom boosts students’ learning at Brimsham Green School AN outdoor learning project at Brimsham Green School in Yate has been hailed a success after a pilot scheme was run during the spring and summer.

A team from the school’s English department, led by teacher Dan Fox, devised the project to give pupils a different and potentially more effective area in which to learn.

Students from year seven 7 took part in the pilot to explore the effects of moving English lessons out of the classroom and into the school grounds.

Leaders were especially keen to see how the change made a difference to the youngsters’ descriptive writing.

Funding of £2,000 came from local Rotary clubs to build the classroom, which can now be used by all Brimsham pupils, as well as children from nearby primary schools.

At the end of the pilot, the school said there were positive results, with written assessments improving markedly among year seven pupils and GCSE students also producing better creative writing.

Mr Fox said: “Feedback from the students showed that everyone enjoyed the project.”

Reading challenge proves a hit

Community transport scheme urges people to climb on board

PEOPLE who cannot use public transport are being encouraged to register with a community scheme ahead of winter so they can get out and about more easily.

Green Community Travel runs a ring-and-ride service from its base just outside Yate for anyone who needs to go shopping or to their GP, as well as taking people to and from hospitals and offering day trips.

It has a total of 14 vehicles available to use, with three minibuses going out every day on the ring-and-ride trips.

But manager Jenny Bright said there were still a number of people unaware of the service provided and who struggled to go shopping, meet appointments or have a day out because they could not use conventional transport.

She said: “We help people who are unable to access public

transport in the South Gloucestershire area.

At this time of year especially, those who don’t know about us might be worried about the forthcoming winter and how they are going to get out.

“But all they have to do is contact us and we can help them.”

The minibuses are suitable for people who have difficulty with mobility but the vehicles can also be used to overcome a lack of public transport in certain areas, such as rural villages, and to help anyone who feels isolated through not being able to get out easily.

The organisation gets some funding from South Gloucestershire Council and parish councils but it is not enough to keep up with demand

for its services.

Jenny said it also relied on a team of volunteers to run the office, drive the cars and buses used to transport people and to be part of the management committee.

The service operates through people registering for £20 and then paying a small sum each time they use a bus or car.

MORE than 6,700 children in South Gloucestershire took part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The Reading Agency charity’s programme encouraged four to 11-year-olds and their families to read six books of their choice during the school holidays.

Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Councillor Erica Williams, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic programme which makes reading fun and improves children’s reading range, motivation and confidence and opportunities.

This year, the Record Breakers themed challenge was all about achieving your personal best and taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge gives children a great start in achieving this goal.”

More than 70 volunteers have supported children taking part in the challenge by listening to them talk about their books and helping with the activities in the library.

Voice publisher runs for cancer charities THE publisher of Yate and Sodbury Voice is running a half marathon to raise funds for two cancer charities.

Richard Drew, 49, is set to run the Great Birmingham race in October, along with his brother Mark, in aid of Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Care. The two organisations gave care to their father Alan and his family when he was terminally ill with cancer.

The brothers decided to run in October, which marks the 20th anniversary of their father’s death. View from Yate Heritage Centre Salvaging our Heritage

ALTHOUGH much traditional museum and heritage work revolves around research, cataloguing and behind-thescenes activities, there is also a great emphasis on the proactive.

This is well illustrated by a less well known aspect of heritage work - salvaging our local history.

Protecting our local heritage may be regarded to some degree as the preserve of the conservation departments of local councils.

But with the best will in the world, it is just not feasible for council officers to be able to salvage every element of our vulnerable local heritage.

What does this involve?

Sometimes we are approached with items about to be destroyed or thrown away.

Occasionally this may involve merely providing temporary care for fragile artefacts before taking

them to a specified record office or archaeological store. Often we are informed of historic items which are worth saving and can be used for display, research and educational purposes.

In recent years we have acquired a boundary stone from Horton, the sign of the old Swan pub in Yate and the hand painted war memorial board rescued from the former Chipping Sodbury cottage hospital, which occupies pride of place in the upstairs gallery of the centre.

The Gazette Archive Although many of the artefacts present a few storage headaches, they are usually easily surmounted. However, more recently we were faced with a greater challenge.

The Gazette newspaper recently moved from Dursley to Stroud but had no means to store its accumulated photographs from the last 50 years.

We recognised these were an invaluable part of our heritage and could be lost. As a result

we identified images not only from the Yate and Sodbury area but also from the rest of South Gloucestershire, which we will pass on to relevant museums and archives.

We sifted through more than 10,000 images to identify their historic value, with several of our volunteers painstakingly poring over photographic negatives, involving countless hours of work. Nevertheless, we have saved this collection for posterity.

Although the images only date back to the mid-1960s, there are some real pearls, including key local events such as the

opening of both Poole Court in 1990 as council offices and Brimsham Green School in1979, as well as the closure of local institutions such as Yate market.

The photos also contain almost forgotten social history of the area, including presentations and social events at industrial giants TI Jacksons and Newman Industries.

As a result, we hope to be able to make copies of these negatives and make accessible the information for generations to come. The originals are too copious to keep, so will go to Gloucester or Bristol records offices.

Celebrating our historic past – Chipping Sodbury Heritage Trail WE open the door this month on Rounceval House in Rounceval Street, one of six properties in Chipping Sodbury that feature a commemorative plaque and form part of the town’s heritage trail.

The trail can be followed with the help of a map that is available at the entrance to Hatherell’s Yard, while a trail guide is available at the Tourist Information Centre.

Each plaque gives just a brief glimpse of the life of its property and its previous owners. This month we feature a property that dates to around 1670 and was a private residence up until 2003.

Rounceval House in Rounceval Street Rounceval House dates to 1670 and records show that Dr Paul Downton Leman owned the property from 1830, after moving from Horse Street. Dr Leman was a surgeon and his son became a general practitioner.

His family lived at the property up until 1953, with the house being transformed in 2003 into a hotel.

Rounceval Street was named after the town of Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees, northern Spain.

A valley at Roncesvalles was the site of a major battle in 778AD, which is recalled in the epic poem Song of Roland.

Local resident Joanne Land’s recent research confirmed that it was lord of the manor William Crassus III who named Rounceval Street but that it was the future Edward 1, known as Longshanks because of his height, who “suggested” the name to him after an incident involving his entourage in Chipping Sodbury.

It had reminded the then Prince Edward of a similar accident that befell his party in Roncesvalles some years earlier.

It was in October 1254 that the prince was returning to England from Spain after marrying Princess Eleanor of Castile. His party faced a difficult and tedious journey and on treacherous ground at Roncesvalles, one of the

Rounceval House in Rounceval Street packhorses slipped and fell, resulting in the horse and attendant horseman being killed by the crush.

The royal party stayed at Roncesvalles for a couple of weeks to recover but the event made a profound impression on the group. Prince Edward eventually returned to Bristol, where he had land, and Eleanor went to Windsor Castle. The following year, Edward moved his entire household and office chantry, seals and exchequer to Bristol, where he arranged to mint his own coins.

Some time between 1257 and 1259, the royal couple and Richard de Clare, earl of Gloucester, left Bristol for London but were badly delayed.

Eventually they set off towards Chippenham, travelling through Chipping Sodbury in a party of 25-30 people, together with pack horses. On the approach to Chipping Sodbury, one of the packhorses slipped and fell, dislodging its load. Both rider and horse were badly injured. Up ahead, the temperamental Prince

Edward was told of the incident and, furious with yet another delay, told Richard de Clare to sort it out. The prince also swore at William Crassus, who had joined the royal party to welcome them through his territory.

Remembering the incident at Roncesvalles during his marriage journey, Edward insisted that Crassus named the as yet unnamed road Rounceval to make sure he remembered to take better care of the roads leading to the entrance of the area.

Dancing to transform hall A BARN dance has been organised to help raise funds for building work to Iron Acton Parish Hall.

Plans to refurbish the lobby entrance to the Hall have been approved by South Glos council. Work will improve facilities for parents dropping off and picking up children from dance classes.

The refurbishment will also provide an additional room which could be hired by smaller groups meetings.

The hall committee are organising a Barn Dance on 24th October with a live group “Jiggerty” to lead the dancing together with a bar and supper.

IFE is hectic and everything seems to be going at 100 miles an hour. Besides it being hectic, it is noisy. We see walkers and runners and cyclists with their earphones clamped into position locking them into their own particular world of sound. In amongst all of this noise and business it is very difficult to find a time or a place to listen for the Lord.

Most of us are not fortunate enough to have the experience that St. Paul encountered on the road to Damascus, when the Lord stopped him in his tracks and forced him to listen to him, but there are places where peace and tranquillity can be found and one such place is the

Thought for the month with Deacon Vincent Calder little church of St. Lawrence, right in the middle of Chipping Sodbury, next door to the Squire Inn. You enter via an archway and come into a stone paved courtyard, it was once the entrance for a coaching inn, to the right you will find a double doorway, it is usually open; entrance takes you into a little church, it smells of polish and incense, the light streams in through the large windows on your left, the wooden benches allow you to sit or kneel and ahead is a beautiful altar. Along the walls are pictures of the Lord’s journey to his death on Calvary. It was once a stable for the coaching horses. There is a stillness, which allows you to sit and ponder on the mystery of life. There is a presence in this place; hundreds of people have brought their joys and sorrows here to the Lord and he has always made himself available, both in the past and the present.

You can explore your deeper

parts that we quite often shut up in the noise and speed of life, but here you look at the Lord and he looks at you, and you find yourself opening closed compartments of yourself to him, as indeed he opens himself to you.

Then you can go back into the turbulent world refreshed and ready to face anything the world can throw at you. You have encountered the Lord in your life and you can repeat the experience in the quietness of your own home, by closing the door on the world and just opening yourself to him.

I find the opening words “It is lovely to be with you Lord, if only for a few moments.” creates the scene.

Lay before him your concerns about your life, and the world and share your joys with him, or just be still. It is the beginning of a conversation with the Lord that will take you on a journey to

Any church if it is open will afford you an encounter with the Lord and if the Church is closed sit quietly in the Church yard; Churches are where people gather to praise the Lord and that prayer soaks into the fabric of the building, and we in turn become living stones.

Assisted Dying Bill

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

WHY I voted against the Assisted Dying Bill this month The Assisted Dying Bill aimed to deal with an extremely delicate issue, and one on which I know many people hold very strong feelings.

Following my call asking local people to get in touch with their opinions, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who wrote to me, emailed me, came to see me and on more than one occasion, stopped me on the street about this most important issue. I genuinely took the time to review everyone’s thoughts individually.

I was overwhelmed by the response to the last column.

The number of local people who get in touch was invaluable in gauging the strength of local opinion to help me reach a decision and vote accordingly.

The Bill had the potential to affect the lives of a great number of people whose circumstances make them vulnerable in different ways. It is for this reason that I decided to vote against the Bill. I believe that if it passed, it would directly affect not only terminally ill patients

who wish to end their lives, it would also have a significant impact on the lives of their friends, families and the medical professionals who care for them.

One of the arguments I continually heard was that the ‘right to die’ would become an ‘obligation to die’. Vulnerable individuals may believe they are burden to their families and carers and may feel pressured, of their own accord, or by others, into seeking a medically-assisted death. I do not believe this was a risk worth taking.

I am also very grateful to the number of medical professionals who wrote to me expressing their concerns over the possibility of having to betray the very oath they take to protect their patients.

While I understand and greatly sympathise with the concerns that some people suffer much pain and distress with a terminal illness, I believe the advances in palliative care means this is much less common than it once was. For many people with a terminal illness, good quality palliative care allows them and their

families to experience some precious final moments of care, love and even reconciliation. I believe adding the consideration to end their lives prematurely is a burden that these people should not be asked to consider.

Instinctively I have great sympathy for terminally ill patients and, and I can honestly say I do not know how I would feel in their situation. Of the few terminal patients I have met, I have been both shocked and heartened by their emotional strength, and their determination to enjoy their final days. This is, I think, the ideal outlook in an otherwise terrible situation.

As the issue was classed a matter of conscience, Members were free to vote as they wish. As an MP, I see it as my responsibility to vote according to the will of constituents, and I feel it would have been doing everyone an injustice if I didn’t listen to the majority of people asking me to vote against. I believe voting this way was the right thing to do and I would like to thank people for their support.

Autumn; Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

E are now well and truly into Autumn.

More importantly, when I go to the greengrocers I’m excited by all the new Autumn produce.

But for me, Autumn is a time of getting ready for all sorts of other exiting events, notably Christmas. I like to spend time making chutneys and preserves with the Autumnal fruit and veg which will be perfect as gifts for Christmas if you make them now.

Bear in mind, most chutneys need at least 3 months to develop their flavour and lose the vinegary taste so now is the time to do them!

My recipe is one that I devised when I lived in Shropshire in a beautiful home by the name of Corunna House. I made it with all the things that grew in my massive veg garden and orchard. It is my favourite chutney and goes wonderfully with all the cold meats that you have at Christmas. I hope that it will give you as much enjoyment eating it as I enjoy making it.

Corunna House Chutney Makes about 8 lb, 3.65 kg Ingredients Plums, 700g – preferably Victoria Plums Cooking Apples, 900g – weighing approx. 700g after peeling Tomatoes, 225g – you can use up any green tomatoes you have or just used ordinary red, doesn’t matter if they’re a little overripe Stoned raisins, or mixed fruits eg. dates, sultanas-450g Onions, 225g Demerara sugar, 700g Preserved ginger, 110g – the sort

that’s preserved in syrup and comes in a jar Garlic, 5g – finely chopped Whole chillies, 5g Cooking salt, 1½ tbsp Malt vinegar, 570ml You will need a preserving pan or a very large saucepan, a small square of muslin or you can use an old piece of a tea towel, some string and 8 x 450g (1lb) jars.

1. Stone and quarter the plums 2. Chop the tomatoes into chunky pieces and place both the plums and the tomatoes into a preserving pan.

3. Chop the onions and apples into chunky pieces roughly the size of the other ingredients in the pan.

4. Chop the preserved ginger finely.

5. Add these to the pan together with the raisons, chopped garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt.

6. Tie the chillies in the muslin with string and suspend them from the handle of the pan.

7. Now cook the chutney very slowly for about 1 – 1½ hours, or until most of the liquid has evaporated and you’ve given it the ‘channel’ test, and give a few good stirs during cooking to prevent the mixture sticking to the base of the pan.

8. When there’s only a little liquid left do the “channel test” to see if it’s ready to be potted. See Cook’s Tips below.

9. Pot the chutney when it is still hot into sterilised jars. (See below how to sterilize jars) 10. Seal with waxed discs and tight lids.

11. Label the jars when the chutney is cold.

12. Store in a cool, dark place

(cupboard, garage or even under the bed) for at least 3 months.

Refrigerate once opened and eat within 2 weeks after opening.

Cook’s Tips “Channel Test” A chutney is ready when the vinegar has reduced sufficiently.

The way to tell this is to pull a wooden spoon right across the surface of the chutney. If the spoon leaves a channel imprinted for a few seconds – without it being filled with vinegar – then the chutney is ready.

Sterilising Jars The easiest way to sterilise jars is to put an inch of water in each jar, place them in a microwave on HIGH for 2 mins. Then tip away the water without touching the insides of the jar, or drying the jars. Fill with warm chutney.

THE Court Players have selected the original non-musical version of the hugely successful Blood Brothers for their next production The Willy Russell play will be performed at The Memorial Hall in Rangeworthy on October 15, 16 and 17 at 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on the last day.

Premature babies to be be helped by fund raising young mums in Yate

YOUNG mums in Yate have been raising money for premature baby care in South Gloucestershire and Bristol.

The group came together to organise a community event - with bouncy castle, face painting and table top sale - as part of a project aimed at young people.

Social Action Youth’s purpose is to encourage those aged between 16 and 25 to run a community activity and learn essential financial skills at the same time.

It is being run for a year in South Gloucestershire between housing association Merlin, Southern Brooks Community Partnerships and 1625 Independent People and aims to support 100 young people in that time.

Lori Ramsay, programme co-ordinator at Southern Brooks Community Partnerships, said: “Premature baby care was a cause that sat close to the hearts of two of the group, who needed support from the neonatal intensive care unit at Southmead when their babies were born.”

MP holds jobs fair LOCAL MP Luke Hall has made a start on an election pledge to hold at least two job fairs a year, with an event in Yate.

Entrance at Shire Way Community Centre was free and people were able to go along to discuss and apply for jobs that were on offer. CV and interview workshops were also available to help with the practical side of job-hunting.

Those involved in the day included Andrews, Avon Cosmetics, SGS College,Virgin Media, Milestones Trust, BlueBird Care, Allianz Insurance, Avon and Somerset Police, Marshfield Bakery, Kleeneze, Coffee #1, B&Q Yate and DAS legal services.

Speaking about the event, Luke said: “As somebody who has lived and worked locally for many years, including managing the local Lidl Store in Yate, I have always been committed to helping local people find work.

These jobs fairs are a great way for local people to see what jobs are out there, and to put them in touch with local employers.

Everybody should be able to find a job that suits their skills and interests and I want to ensure that the avenues to this are open and available.”

Mr Hall says he will be holding two Jobs Fairs a year for the next five years, with the next one expected to be held in central Yate in February.

Pupils join the debate in MP’s politics forum STUDENTS from Brimsham Green and Chipping Sodbury schools took part in a politics forum for young people that was organised by their MP Luke Hall.

It was the first event of its kind run by Mr Hall, the Conservative MP for Thornbury and Yate, who wants to engage the next generation in politics.

Held at Brimsham Green, the pupils joined in discussions on the controversial topic of assisted dying and the legalisation of drugs.

Mr Hall said: “I believe the next generation have a wealth of knowledge and understanding

that can be extremely helpful to the decision makers in Government.

“It is crucial to engage the next generation of speakers, activists and professionals in order to make their voices heard.

“If young people do not get involved or have a voice, then politicians often ignore them, only listening to those who shout loudest. This only makes the young even more disenfranchised.”

Stellar start for Sodbury

Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club are top of the Gloucester Premier League after a perfect start to the season. The ‘Sods’ won all their games in September, beating Frampton Cotterell, Longlevens and Hucclecote. They have a three point cushion over second placed North Bristol, and face St Mary’s Old Boys next at home on Oct 10.

Chipping Sodbury stay top of the pile Chipping Sodbury RFC 1st XV 62 Longlevens 1st XV 24 Chipping Sodbury’s first fifteen continued their winning start to the season with a fine win over old adversaries Longlevens. The opening ten minutes gave little clue to the final result as the visitors raced to a 0-14 lead.

Given that Longlevens had twice beaten Sodbury last season in tight encounters the turnaround was even sweeter as Sodbury ran out convincing winners despite a late rally by the away side.

Sodbury opened their account after a long 22 drop-out by Longlevens was fielded by Joe Horton who sprinted 40m up field, brushing aside attempted tackles before feeding Pete Butcher who in turn set Dave Guest off in pursuit of a try.

Butcher was halted just short of the line but wing Kurt Moreton was on hand to complete the score and register the first try of a glittering hat-trick.

Sodbury drew level from the

ensuing kick off when some hard running and ferocious rucking led to some fancy footwork

by Jake Lewis who left the Longlevens defence in tatters as he cruised home from 50m.

Sodbury took the lead after just 20 minutes when deep in the visitors territory, the combination of Horton and Phil Player supported by Ben Sharp and skipper Steve Hopes breeched the home defence with some fine rucking and set Moreton free to record his second try of the game.

Having worked hard in training to cut down on the number of needless penalties conceded in previous games, the home side left little room for their visitors to work in and Longlevens were forced to play for long periods in their own 22.

Sodbury registered again when10m from their own try line, Longlevens failed to clear despite winning their own scrum and Sodbury turned the ball over, allowing scrum half Tom Cawston to dive in for the try.

The last try of the half was scored with a trademark Sodbury lineout drive. Matt Cooke soared high to claim the ball, which was expertly worked to the back of the maul where the arms of Butcher snatched it before the rest of the pack propelled him over the line.

Just two minutes in to the second half Moreton secured his hat trick with a 40m run.

Pressure from the Sodbury No. 8 at a scrum on half way allowed the impressive Phil Player room to pounce on the loose ball and shake off two defenders to feed Moreton.

Longlevens registered their final points of the match with some 30 minutes left to play with a lineout drive that secured a bonus point fourth try, bringing the match score to 36-24. A short time later following some great build up play, Sodbury ran in another try when Cooke used his strength to score following some good work at the ruck by wing Max Gallagher.

defence, taking their rucks into double figures but the home side’s discipline and sheer weight of tackling drove them 30m backwards. A Sodbury scum just inside the Longlevens half produced a first phase try for Horton who dropped his shoulder and left the away defence in his wake to dive between the posts.

Fly-half Dan Bradley sealed the emphatic Sodbury win with the final two tries. The first began at a lineout when Cooke supplied crisp possession and the ball was driven hard up the centre of the pitch. Bradley unlocked the defence with a dummy to stride over the gain line unopposed.

Five minutes later, with the away side looking to run rather than kick out of their own half, Sodbury’s solid defensive work bore more fruit when Bradley pounced on a forced knock on to cut through a flailing defence to record his brace. Bradley enjoyed a successful day having also kicked 6 out of 10 conversions.

Chipping Sodbury open account in impressive style Frampton Cotterell 1st XV – 8 Chipping Sodbury 1st XV – 39 Sodbury firsts travelled to near neighbours Frampton for their opening fixture of the Gloucester Premier League determined to compete at the highest level.

The large home crowd were left stunned into silence as the away side stormed into a 0-17 lead after just 20 minutes. Man of the match Joe Horton opened Sodbury’s account when he used his considerable height to stretch over for a try with only fives minutes on the clock. Dan Bradley converted.

The try and the ensuing play with some fine ball handling and a 30m charge by Dave Guest gave Sodbury the confidence to build their next try scoring play. Phil Player picked up from a 40m scrum and his pounding

20m advance led to three rapid rucks that resulted in the ball finding its way out left to Chris Hamilton who crossed the line after a clever pass by Bradley.

Tom Farthing left the fray with a deep cut to his head following a head on ankle tackle only to be replaced by Irish whirlwind Dave Telford who tormented Frampton for the rest of the game.

A speculative grubber kick directed tight down the right wing by Horton from a lineout 40m out was picked up by American Football convert Max Gallagher whose pace won the race to the touchdown for Sodbury’s next try.

The away side found themselves under a penalty advantage during one of Frampton’s rare visits to their

half, until after 2 rucks they dropped a goal to open their account. Just 5 minutes later Frampton infringed and Bradley was on hand to capitalise on the pack’s great work with a penalty from the edge of the 22.

Coach Sean Hodges made sure his team was suitably charged up at half time and sent them out fired up to win the game. His words clearly made an impact as Gallagher scored his second try of the match just two minutes in.

As the half progressed the Sods found themselves pegged into their own half for long periods with Frampton forcing some scrambling defence from their opponents. Relief from the pressure came following a lineout on halfway when the ball found its way to Horton who

carved a straight path through the home defence only to be halted after a brutal 30m dash.

The ball was whipped right from the resulting ruck on the 22 and after great skill from Bradley and Player Sevens expert Dave Guest scored the try.

With the Sods confidence at an all time high the pack set off down the centre of the pitch from 70m out. The backs joined in pulling the Frampton defence left and right until they reached the 22 when Bradley, ignoring an obvious overlap on the right, barged and swerved his way to a try under the posts, which he then converted.

A late consolation try by the home side with just five minutes to play didn’t take the shine of a superb and thoroughly deserved Sodbury victory.

Chipping Sodbury Ladies looking forward to start of new season

Having met their opponents in the last game of the 2014/15 season in a hard fought win, the team knew that they would have to be at their best to secure the points.

Dominant from the start, Sodbury scored within a couple of minutes when wing Katie Lane recorded the first of a hat trick of tries. In only her third game for Sodbury, she stormed over the line following a scrum awarded for a handling error forced after Sodbury had chased down the kick off. The try was converted by prop Michelle Deverill.

Sodbury managed to maintain

the majority of possession and were soon to score again when Captain Becky Petchey flew down the pitch supported by Jodie Leonard, who took a blow to the face but still managed to score in the corner. Leonard was replaced by club legend Abi Bedford who has returned to the team this season.

The home side widened their lead when wing Katie Lane charged down the field, only to be stopped short by some last ditch defending. Full back Rebecca Parkhill was on hand to receive the ball and dive over the line.

Penalised continuously at the breakdown, with Devizes being awarded a number of penalties, Sodbury fought hard in defence thwarting any threat posed by their opponents.

In a bid to end the first half with some points Devizes spotted an overlap out wide and headed towards exposed winger Katie

Lane, but her defensive work stopped them in their tracks .

The half ended with Sodbury Ladies 17-0..

Devizes recorded their first points with a penalty from in front of the posts following further indiscipline by Sodbury who made amends with a try shortly after when a kick to touch only made its way into the hands of Katie Lane who sprinted half the pitch to score in the right hand corner.

The forwards and backs combined well to set up yet another home try from Martine Richardson who touched down almost straight under the posts to score her first try for the team.

Deverill converted easily.

With Tina Best at number ten playing out of position, and Abi Bedford at number 12, some superb handling in the backs working well together set up Katie Lane for another try.

by a yellow card shown to replacement second row Vicki Britton for a high tackle made only minutes after she had entered the fray.

The away side took advantage of their unsettled opponents and pushed over for their first and only try of the match.

Sodbury responded quickly and found themselves back in the Devizes twenty-two where they had spent most of the game, but with Britton still in the sin bin Sodbury struggled to breakdown the away defence despite some powerful forwards play led by second row Katie Brain.

Finally showing some self belief as the final whistle approached it was Becky Petchey that scored the eighth and final try of the day after an amazing team effort allowed her to sprint through to touch down, giving Sodbury an impressive 44-10 victory.

Chipping Sodbury in league shake up

CLUB cricket in the region has been restructured following a call to make matches more player friendly and to cut travel time for teams.

The West of England Premier League has been reduced from an 80 team first XI competition, with a separate 70 side second XI league to just one competition of 70 teams.

Sodbury’s first XI have secured a place in the new WEPL Gloucestershire Division which includes Frocester 2nds, Tewkebsury, Dumbleton, Lydney, Stroud and Bourton Vale.

The second XI, led by the popular Jerry Swatton, now find themselves in Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League. Fixtures for next summer will include clashes with the first XIs of Newent, Great Rissington and Shurdington as well as games against the 2nd XIs of Rockhampton, Dumbleton, Hatherley & Reddings, Gloucester City Winget, Lydney and Lechlade.

New club president unveiled The club has announced that stalwart Jeff Long is the new president of Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club, taking over the reins from Derek Febry who stood down after 20 highly successful years in the post.

As the first XI prepare for life in the new-look WEPL in 2016, the club have also announced that Jamie Rendell will be returning for a second term as first team captain.

pavilion.”

The experienced Steve Febry has been unveiled as the new captain of Sodbury 3rds, who will continue to play in the Bristol & District League alongside the club’s 4th and 5th Saturday XIs. Damian Frodsham continues as captain of the 4ths with Richard Deane, Rosie Tregear and Steve Hill combining to look after the 5th XI.

Tom Febry and Ben Waldron are to remain in charge of Sunday cricket following a successful summer, and Ben will also take the lead on indoor cricket over the close season.

Dave Harvey continues to be responsible for the youth section and the large number of volunteers who provide players of all abilities to senior cricket.

Mid-table Yate make solid start to the season AFTER the thrilling 3-3 draw against local rivals Mangotsfield United on August Bank Holiday Monday, Yate Town travelled to play AFC Totton for their first match in September. Despite outplaying their opponents for much of the game Yate returned without a point from the south coast following a 2-1 defeat.

The home team took the lead immediately after half time when Craig Feeney scored and Nathaniel Sherborne, prolific at Southern League level, increased Totton’s lead after 71 minutes.

The away side reduced the deficit when Jake Jackson netted but despite exerting some late pressure Yate were unable to rescue a point.

Evesham United visited Lodge Road for Yate’s next fixture in a re-arranged game, which followed the pattern of recent matches between the teams that have seldom produced many goals. A very

tight affair with the respective defences dominating throughout meant that chances were at a premium.

Both keepers produced fine saves with the visitors Kevin Sawyer denying an effort from Town Warren and Town goalkeeper shepherding George Washbourne’s strike from a narrow angle wide of his post. Sawyer saved again from a second half effort by Liam Monelle but the match ended goalless and a share of the points.

Wantage Town next visited Lodge Road and a 2-1 home victory moved Yate above their opponents in the league. The match was notable for three superb goals with Yate taking a 2-0 first half advantage before Wantage fought back after the interval.

Yate increased their lead when Darren Edwards supplied Alec Fiddes who crossed to Camen Harvey who volleyed in from a tight angle for a superbly taken goal to make it 2-0.

Wantage were a different team after the break and forced several corners in quick succession and from the last of these the loose ball fell to Aaron Ferris who sent a thirty yard shot into the bottom corner to cut Yate’s lead. Further Wantage attacks were repelled and Yate gradually regained control running out deserved winners.

Old Sodbury boys off to a flier

A DOMINANT display at Clifton United kicked off Old Sodbury under 15s season in style. Last season’s top scorer Ross Womack netted a hat trick before half time as the visitors dominated play from the outset.

Womack’s strike partner Miles Theobald was also in lively form and it was his pace that drew a penalty, thumped home by Dan Watson to give Old Sodbury a commanding advantage at the interval.

The pace fell away in the second period as tired legs took over and Clifton managed to pull a couple of goals back before Womack found extra strength from somewhere to net twice more and complete an impressive haul. Old Sodbury returned home 6-2 winners.

The first home match for Old Sodbury against Ashton Boys Wanderers was a repeat of the Clifton score line for the home side.

The result had seemed unlikely at half time with Ashton, who had competed at a higher level last season, leading 2-1 at the break. Old Sodbury took the lead against the run of play with Womack slotting home from a tight angle but found themselves outplayed and behind at half time.

The hosts regrouped at the interval altering their shape and as the second half progressed they began to pass the ball more effectively, stretching the visitors defence. Womack’s persistence brought an equaliser and a precise through ball from Wade Campling, that split the defence wide open, allowed man of the match Ethan Lloyd to stroke the ball home to give Old Sodbury the lead.

The visitors were now wilting under the relentless pressure and Robbie Foxwell’s excellent brace; with one more from Womack secured a fine 6-2 home victory.

Ruth scoops four medals and a world title at world transplant games

ORGAN transplant athlete Ruth Medcroft is the new world champion in the 3km race walk – and returned home to Yate with a further three medals.

Ruth, 37, was already the British women’s champion in the discipline before setting off to the world transplant games in Argentina.

In South America she not only struck gold in the race walk but also secured silver medals in the 1,500 metre and 5km road races, along with a team gold medal.

She also recorded personal best times in all the events in which she won medals.

Diagnosed with a serious kidney condition as a child, Ruth received a transplant in 2008 and competed in her first games in Coventry a year later.

She said: “It was a marvellous experience to compete in Argentina and truly inspiring to meet so many other transplanted athletes from around the world.

“It was so exciting to compete for my country and I’m really grateful to all the other people who supported me and helped me to raise the funds to compete.”

The games are run to raise awareness of organ donation. Everyone taking part has received life saving transplants and they use the event to recognise what donors have done for them.
