The six screen cinema, which has almost a thousand seats, opened to the public at midnight

after the gala. 35 local people have been recruited to work in the cinema, which is part of the Riverside development in Yate.

It’s hoped the cinema, and nearby restaurants, will be a key part in transforming Yate into a night time destination.

Precision Dippings Manufacturing, of Yate, has been recognised in the category for innovation after developing waterproof covers for plaster casts.

Peter Howarth, the company’s technical director, said: “To receive such a prestigious award is a real testament to the hard work that the whole team has put in over the last decade.”

Beacon lit in Yate to mark Queen’s 90th birthday PEOPLE in Yate celebrated the Queen’s birthday by lighting a local beacon.

Dodington Parish Council and Shire Way Community Centre joined forces for the event at Shire Way. The event was attended by local artist Val Robinson who originally crafted the “shire horse” emblem on the beacon.

Thousands expected to help Yate rock at popular community music festival YATE’S popular community music festival is set to bring in crowds of visitors when the event runs over two days in Kingsgate Park.

The festival, given a new name of Yate Rocks! last summer, is in its eleventh year and remains as popular as ever with all ages.

Thousands of people are expected to go along to hear local bands, visit sideshows, support community and craft stalls and enjoy a variety of food and drink, with a beer tent hosted by the Wickwar Brewing Company.

Entertainment includes fun rides for children, trampolines, giant inflatables, football games and pony rides.

Crews from Yate’s fire station will also have an engine on site for people to see.

The festival will open on Saturday, June 25, with music performed by bands including Atlantic, Seduction, Dockside, Midnight Tides, Limited Edition, Avalanche and Van Burgundy.

The young, recently formed Tail Lights will perform alongside local dance groups such as Yasmins, Stagecoach, the Kathryn Hurley Academy, Yate Star Twirlers and Redds Dance Group, with adults performing in Redd-i-licious.

A Praise in the Park event will launch events on Sunday, June 26, with local churches providing an outdoor service from 10.30am to noon.

A couple of hours of afternoon entertainment from 1.30pm will feature the Westerly Showband, whose members will play while families enjoy a picnic.

One in five given free blood pressure test through Rotary Club referred to GP MORE than 100 people had their blood pressure measured in Chipping Sodbury when the town’s Rotary Club held an annual health check.

Know Your Blood Pressure Day gives people the chance to be screened for free, with this year some 20 people being referred to their GPs as a result of their readings.

Organisers of the event were keen to meet anyone who had not previously had a test or those who had not seen their GP for a check in the last five years.

Rotarian and retired doctor Iain

Dunnett said: “The numbers of people having their blood pressure checked has fallen over the years but the percentage of those whose blood pressure was sufficiently raised to warrant referral to their GP has gone up.

“I believe this is a reflection of our policy to target people who have never or not recently had their blood pressure checked.

“The fact that we identified 20 people who needed to be referred was an excellent result and potentially life changing for these people.”

Local young people overwhelmingly back staying in EU YOUNG people have expressed their backing for staying in the EU during the third Young Person Politics Forum organised by local MP Luke Hall.

The event saw its biggest turn out yet at the end of April as pupils and young people across the Thornbury and Yate constituency met At Castle School in Thornbury to debate a range of issues.

The event was introduced

by Mr Hall alongside South Gloucestershire’s youngest Councillor, Sam Bromiley.

Other topics, chosen by attendees, ranged from “Should the UK renew its commitment to the Trident Submarine System?” to “Should Prisoners in the United Kingdom be granted a vote in national elections?”

The Bristol Rovers Chaplain, Rev David Geal was also involved in the event, offering

his viewpoint on the subject as a now reformed ex-prisoner.

The group, by almost 2 to 1, said the UK should remain a member of the European Union but were almost deadlocked on the renewal of the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent. The answer to the question on whether the UK should grant Prisoners the right to vote was clear with a majority in favour of the status quo.

championing the voices of young people in politics with the forum said; “Once again I was delighted to see the level of debate and discussion was at such a high standard. The group was articulate, passionate and skilled at getting their points of view across. I would strongly encourage any young person who wishes to attend the next one to get in touch.”

Further efforts being made to build 18 homes on landlocked site in Yate

DEVELOPERS are making another attempt to build homes on a site in Yate, despite being turned down by South Gloucestershire Council and a planning inspector.

Last year, Woodstock Homes applied for permission to put 18 homes on a landlocked piece of ground in the town, with the demolition of a bungalow in Cambrian Drive included in the scheme in order to gain access.

When council planners rejected the controversial proposal, Woodstock appealed against the decision. But the inspector appointed to hear the evidence recently ruled against the company.

Now the firm has resubmitted the application, saying it had addressed the inspector’s concerns.

A planning statement prepared by the Pegasus Group, on behalf of Woodstock, said homes ranging from one to fourbed properties were planned, together with vehicle access,

parking and amenity space.

There would be detached, semi-detached and terraced houses and some flats, with the existing bungalow still earmarked for demolition.

When last year’s plan was drawn up, it was met with opposition from Yate Town Council and more than 100 local residents.

The town council said the area was well-used open space and it was “essential” to keep it as such.

It said the housing would affect people living either side of the proposed access, extra traffic would be generated and existing on-street parking would be lost.

There were also questions about the number of homes planned and whether any more housing was needed with so much building already taking place in and around the town.

South Gloucestershire planners had said the proposal “would result in significant and demonstrable harm” and had failed to reach the highest

possible standards of site planning and design.

The Pegasus report on the latest application said: “The design that has been developed addresses all the key concerns of the planning inspector included in the appeal decision.”

My pet had been stung – now what?

D

URING the spring and summer there are lots of insects around which can sting your pet. The noise and movement of bees and wasps often attract your pet’s attention and bring out their hunting instincts! Chasing and playing with insects is very likely to get your pet stung, although insects can also sting when unprovoked! A single sting, although uncomfortable for your pet, is unlikely to put them in too much danger. Multiple stings, or stings in vulnerable places, however, can be more serious.

1. First assess where and how many times your pet has been stung. The most common locations are the face, the inside of the mouth, and the paws. If you notice sudden limping on one leg, it’s worth the checking the footpad to see if there are any signs of a stinger in there.

2. Then assess if your pet is well in itself. Any signs of breathing trouble or major swelling around the affected area could indicate an allergic reaction. This is a medical emergency as there is a risk your pet is going into anaphylactic shock.

If you are worried you should contact us immediately so that

we can give advice over the phone and book an appointment if they need to be seen.

If, however, your pet seems fine in itself, you just need to monitor it closely in case any reaction develops.

It is common for a swelling to develop around the area of the sting but if this is getting bigger or won’t go down, then book an appointment for us to check your pet over and provide medication if needed.

3. You can try to remove the stinger if it is still in place. The best way to do this is by scraping if off, for example with a credit card, as using tweezers to grasp the stinger could cause more venom to be released.

4. You can then bathe the affected area with cold water and apply an ice pack to reduce the swelling and decrease the animal’s discomfort.

Bee and wasp stings are more a nuisance for yourself and your pet than anything, but it is important to know what to look for in the unlucky event your pet has a bad reaction. Sodbury churches to welcome new rector in the summer A NEW rector has been appointed for the Sodbury Vale benefice, with the Rev Canon David Bowers set to be licensed in July.

Canon Bowers will take responsibility for St John’s Church in Chipping Sodbury, as well as the churches in Horton, Little Sodbury and Old Sodbury.

He said: “I am very pleased to have been offered, subject to due process, and to have accepted the post of rector.

“We are looking forward to being part of your communities and to getting to know all of you as we settle into our new home in Chipping Sodbury.”

Canon Bowers and his wife, Judith, a nurse, are both from Salford and have two grown-up children.

Canon Bowers was a civil servant before ordination, going on to work in parishes in Manchester, Bolton and Rochdale before moving in 1998 to the Gloucester diocese.

He said he and his wife had a special interest in Indian culture and food as they had visited the country several times.

Canon Bowers also enjoys watching sport, especially rugby and football, and is a lifelong Manchester United supporter, as well as more recent follower of Gloucester rugby.

He is due to be licensed by the Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Rev Rachel Treweek, on July 13.

First support group meeting about to be held for people with eye condition A NEW support group for people affected by a common eye condition is about to hold its inaugural meeting.

Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club has set up the group for anyone with macular degeneration, a problem that affects a person’s central vision.

It is working in conjunction with the Macular Society, with the first meeting to be held in the Old Grammar School in Chipping Sodbury’s High Street on Monday, May 16.

Macular degeneration results in sufferers having difficulty seeing when looking straight ahead. Reading also becomes a problem, as does driving and even recognising people’s faces.

About ten per cent of the over-65 population is believed to have the condition to varying degrees and it is thought to be the commonest cause of vision loss in the UK. The support group will give people the opportunity to share experiences and to pass on hints and tips.

Meetings will sometimes feature guest speakers talking on a variety of subjects concerned with macular conditions.

Rotarian and retired GP, Dr Tony Sarafian, said: “Until now, the nearest support group was either in Bristol or Bath, which prohibited many local people from attending meetings. We felt there was a real need for something more local.”

The group will meet on the third Monday of every month from 1.30pm-3.30pm, with meetings open to anyone affected by central vision loss, as well as any carers they may have.

LIFE’S a beach for youngsters as summer sands come to Yate Shopping Centre Summer is coming to Yate Shopping Centre, with the popular Central Square beach about to return.

The beach is a favourite with families, attracting children of all ages throughout the time it is in-situ.

This year it will be open from Monday, May 9, until the summer bank holiday on Monday, August 29.

Shopping Centre marketing manager, Tracy King, said: “The beach is without doubt our most popular summer event, attracting children of all ages and putting a real summer feel into the centre.

“There will be other school holiday time entertainment attractions running alongside it but whatever the weather, parents can always rely on bringing their children to play in the centre’s sand.” With Cineworld having just opened and many new restaurants recently launched at Yate Riverside, the shopping centre is fast becoming a popular leisure destination for families.

Dean’s Diner, scheduled to open in the first half of May, will be the latest restaurant to welcome customers.

Centre manager, Andrew Lowrey, said: “It has always been our intention to make the shopping centre as much a leisure as a retail destination so that local residents have facilities on their doorstep.

“Whereas the cinema and restaurants are there all year round, the addition of popular attractions such as the beach adds that extra dimension for parents and children.”

Another popular attraction making a return after a recent short appearance will be Homecrafters, with craft workers selling their wares in units 6-8 North Walk from May to July.

THE hugely popular Music in the Meadows is set to return to Iron Acton. The two nights of music at the start of July.

Acton Aid, who put on events to raise money for local good causes and charity are behind the events in the Parish Meadows.

On Friday 1st July, the 4th Mash in the Meadows has four outstanding local bands. Several have played at Glastonbury and toured throughout Europe and one has played at Buckingham Palace.

Abbotswood gets Spring Clean

ABBOTSWOOD Action Group has spearheaded a day spent cleaning up the district. More than twenty people drawn from the Group, Scouts, St Nicholas Church as well as local residents tackled a range of activities.

They included creating hanging baskets, litter picking and painting garage doors and the seats on the green.

“It’s a real pleasure to see local people taking pride in their neighbourhood and their local centre” Paul Hulbert, Vice-Chairman of Abbotswood Action Group told The Voice, “The change in the area is visible already”.

Abbotswood Action Group is planning a range of activities such as a summer family picnic and a litter project with local schoolchildren.

A CHARITY that helps those who struggle to cope after life in the military is urging people in South Gloucestershire to volunteer at one of its forthcoming community fundraising events.

Homes for Veterans was set up by Alabaré, an organisation that has cared for vulnerable people in the South West and Wales for 25 years by providing shelter, financial support and emotional care.

A home in Filton, which was officially opened by the Princess Royal in 2011, is one of 24 it operates.

It provides a safe and supportive environment for homeless veterans and helps them develop new skills.

Some of the veterans suffer with post traumatic stress disorder, while others may have problems with drink or drugs, but through the homes they

are helped to adjust to life as a civilian.

This year Bristol Homes for Veterans will run an inaugural May Day appeal, with a range of fundraising activities throughout May that include street and store collections in locations such as Yate.

Community fundraiser Nancy Filmore said: “We are a relatively new charity in Bristol but have been humbled by people’s generosity and passion for our cause.

“We are really hoping that the people of South Gloucestershire will help make our May Day Appeal a huge success.”

Help on offer for stammerers

IT is a little ironic that I am contacting a publication called The Voice, when for the majority of my 63 years, I have had a severe stammer.

In January 2000, I joined The McGuire Programme, a programme run by stammers to help other people that stammer.

Since joining the programme and after having worked very hard on controlling my speech, it has enabled me to participate in many things that a stammerer would think impossible. I have

coached numerous people within the programme in helping them with their speech. I have instructed some of our courses throughout England as well as in Antwerp and Mexico City.

I became President of a local Speakers Club as well as having given several radio, newspaper and magazine interviews.

We have a 4 day course starting in Bristol on 1st June and I’d like to publicise an Open Day on Sunday 8th May so that people can get information on The McGuire Programme.

Dumped rubbish leads to fine for Yate householder

A YATE woman was ordered to pay a total of £574 in fines and costs after fly tipping waste in a country lane.

Emma Curness, 29, of Lansdown, admitted dumping rubbish in Gibbs Lane, Dodington, when she appeared at North Avon Magistrates Court.

The court heard she had cleared rubbish from her house into a van and emptied the contents in the lane.

Curness was fined £240, ordered to pay costs of £310 and told to pay a £24 victim surcharge.

South Gloucestershire Council said unwanted goods, household or garden waste could all be disposed of at no cost at its Sort It! centres, including the site in Yate.

Meanwhile, anyone who sees illegal fly tipping is urged to report it to the council’s StreetCare helpdesk by emailing streetcare@southglos.gov.uk or phoning 01454 868000.

Merlin aims to fly high with ambitious home building programme HOUSING association Merlin said it had ambitious plans to increase its home building programme by 250 per cent during the next 12 months.

The Chipping Sodbury-based society is already on site building nearly 100 homes with developers such as Lovell and Barratt Homes.

Now it plans to start work on another 350 properties during the next year - a big change from only three years ago when it started its development programme and completed just 24 homes.

Merlin’s head of development, Amanda Swann, said: “Last year we started work on 100 new homes and completed 79. This year, we’re aiming much higher and will be starting work to build 350 much-needed affordable homes and to complete more than 130.

“It’s a huge increase but shows the scale of our ambitions.

Our plans for the future are even bigger. By 2019 we want to be completing 300 new homes every year.

“There is a housing crisis in our area, with house prices around nine times average earnings. It means people are finding it increasingly difficult to own their own home.

“Thousands of people have registered for affordable rented housing locally. We’re committed to helping meet this demand and to providing even more local people with the homes they need.

“We’re particularly keen to increase the number of shared ownership properties we’re developing. In the past year, we had huge demand for the homes we’ve already sold and we expect this will be a real growth area for us.”

Planning blueprint could leave out housing requirements A KEY change is being proposed to a major planning blueprint being drawn up by South Gloucestershire Council to omit provision for extra housing allocations.

Overall housing numbers for the West of England - the former Avon area which includes South Gloucestershire - are currently being reviewed as part of a separate draft document called the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP).

Planning experts said it would be premature to include housing allocations in South Gloucestershire’s own Policy, Sites and Places document as the council was already working with its neighbouring West of England authorities on that particular subject for the JSP. The aim of the JSP is to find sustainable locations for housing and employment across the region up to 2036.

South Gloucestershire councillors will debate whether to leave housing out of its Policy, Sites and Places document when they meet in June.

EGAL highs’ contain one or more chemical substances that produce similar effects to illegal drugs like cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy.

These new substances are not yet controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and there is often not enough research about them to know about their potency, adverse effects from human consumption, or when used with other substances or alcohol.

More and more ‘legal highs’ are being researched to see what their dangers are and to see whether they should be made illegal. In fact, many substances that have been found in substances sold as ‘legal highs’ have already been made illegal. The chemicals contained in legal highs have not been tested for safety, so users cannot be sure what the outcome will be.

Over the last few years highs legal highs have become more and more prevalent in society and Yate and Chipping Sodbury is not any different.

While legal highs may not cause you to be criminally responsible for possessing or distributing them, the dangers to your health are far worse and due to them being relatively new in society, the dangers are not always known.

‘Legal highs’ cannot be sold for human consumption so they are often sold as incense, salts or plant food to get round the law. The packaging may describe a list of ingredients but you cannot be sure that this is what the product will contain.

You can’t really be sure of what’s in a ‘legal high’ that you’ve bought or been given, or what effect it’s likely to have on you or your friends.

We know that many ‘legal highs’ are sold under brand names like ‘Clockwork Orange’, ‘Bliss’, ‘Mary Jane’ and have been directly linked to poisoning, emergency hospital admissions including in mental

health services and, in some cases, deaths.

I have seen firsthand the detrimental effects even one intake of legal highs can have. While some may only have mild effects on you, others can cause you to act in ways that are out of character and lead you onto criminal effects.

So THINK , even though you may think it is just an innocent intake of a legal high, it could have a massive impact on your life through criminal convictions or serious effect to your health.

Did you know that of you drive under the influence of a legal high you will likely be commiting a criminal offence and would be banned from driving?

Neighbourhood Manager Inspector Nigel Colston commented, “It’s not currently an offence to possess or sell nitrous oxide, or other so-called ‘legal highs’, though their production, sale and supply (but not possession) will become illegal when the new Psychoactive Substances Act comes into effect, which is planned for May. “The biggest mistake people make is to consider such substances safe, purely because they’re not yet illegal. The blanket ban is designed to get around the issue of suppliers continually offering new ‘legal highs’ to replace banned ones, which is what has been happening over recent years.”

The Government are introducing legislation which will seek to make it an offence to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply, import or export psychoactive substances; that is, any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect. The maximum sentence will be 7 years’ imprisonment.

Actonians head to Cranford

LOCAL amateur dramatic group The Actonians are preparing to perform the classic play Cranford. Written by Elizabeth Gaskell and adapted for the stage by Laura Turner, it’s set in the mid-1800s and contains the most poignant and funniest observations of life in a rural village in Victorian England. However desirable these and other aspects of life might be. We all know that life itself can be positive, rewarding and full of promise at times and that decision-making individually or collectively brings with it a challenge.

In my own life I have come to experience, know and seek to share what I have called ‘the laying down’ process. This has, given time, proved to be a major and reliable asset in all my decision-making. So, if a decision of real consequence needs to be made by you I recommend a place that is restful, quiet and allows you to think clearly. Mine is often outdoors somewhere.

In your quiet place lay down any issues that are currently uncertain even harmful or marring your life at that time and leave them there. Picking them back up tomorrow is not allowed!

You will know that I have a Christian faith that started for me about 70 years ago. Of course there have been many decisions to be made during such a span as that. Whenever during those years I have sincerely asked my maker to relieve me of a burden or uncertainty or make clear my way forward, it has been forthcoming.

This may not have happened there and then but it has transpired within His immaculate timing whenever that has been. I think the waiting time is very much part of the learning process!

Remain or Leave? An opportunity for your questions be answered ON 23rd June we will be asked to decide whether to remain in, or leave the European Union.

It will be a once in a generation referendum, and I know some people are still struggling to decide; do we ‘remain’ or do we ‘leave’?

I am hugely grateful to everybody who responded to my article asking whether it would be useful to hold a local debate on our membership of the European Union. I have been inundated with people sharing their thoughts on the referendum as well asking to hear my own. The main concern that is being raised with me is around the lack of information, with both campaigns seemingly contradicting each other.

As your Local MP I want to ensure that everyone in our area is able to make that decision on the 23rd June, based upon as much information as possible, presented fairly by both sides.

I have already published an impartial briefing on this issue on my website, with links to both campaigns which I hope will be of some help.

Special night as cinema comes to Yate IT was the night people had been waiting decades for, and for a lucky few there was a sneak preview of what Cineworld Yate is offering before the doors opened to the general public.

A special gala night heralded the start of screenings at the Riverside development, with those invited able to enjoy canapés and a drink in the foyer before being ushered into screen 6.

Instead of adverts and trailers, there were a few brief speeches before Yate’s mayor, councillor Tony Davis cut a reel of film to declare the cinema open. For those not at the screening of Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, the doors opened just a few hours later at midnight for Captain America.

Matt Eyre, Cineworld Senior Vice President of Operations, was at the event and told the Voice: “I think it’s a fantastic location, I think it’s a great little cinema for a lovely little town. I think it will do very well for us”.

Steve Plank, the cinema’s General Manager admitted to a few big night nerves, but was looking forward to getting the cinema operational: “It’s a brand new build, she’s a premium design, it’s a real honour and privilege to be part of this and be the first general manager and head up this cinema, especially within a community that’s so supportive”.

The sun has got its hat on at last

W

E’VE just had a few really warm days and it makes me start to think of new lighter, brighter recipes for Spring. So let’s hope when you read this that you’ll be tempted to cook it for your loved ones and maybe you’ll be able to eat it alfresco. It’s great for a family party, or halve the ingredients for a romantic meal for two.

If you serve tagliatelle with the chicken, then make the starter light; a delicate soup maybe of peas which should be just coming into the shops would work well. If you’ve just served it with vegetables, then a mushroom or asparagus risotto or pasta dressed with a sophisticated sauce made with tomatoes, fresh herbs and a splash of vodka makes a great first course.

Italian Style Chicken Stuffed with Hazelnuts, Ham and Cheese

Hazelnuts and white meat make a great taste combination. Use a dry, yet fruity white wine like Pinot Grigio or Pinot Bianco for the best results.

Serves 4 Ingredients: Chicken fillets- 4 Hazelnuts-50g (2oz) Comté cheese- 80g (3 oz)

Quark no fat soft cheese-60g (2 ½ oz) Ham – thickly cut, 75g (3 oz), about 1 large thick slice.

Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Unsalted butter- 25g (1oz) Vegetable oil, preferably groundnut- 1 tbsp Dry white wine- 2 tbsps Tabasco sauce- 4 drops For the sauce Dry white wine (See note above) – 120 ml (9 tbsps) Chicken or vegetable stock – 150ml (6 fl oz) Small handful of fresh basil Here’s what you do: 1. Chop the hazelnuts, Comté cheese and ham finely. If you have a food processor this is easily done, but chop the ingredients roughly to start. Add the Quark cheese and mix well.

2. Scoop the mixture into a bowl and add the nutmeg and a little salt and pepper.

3. Lay each fillet on a board and beat out with a mallet or rolling pin until the meat is about ¼ inch (½ cm) thick.

4. Melt the butter in a large frying pan in which you are going to cook the chicken.

5. Once melted, turn off the heat.

Using a pastry brush, brush the insides of the beaten chicken fillets with butter. Season with a sprinkling of salt and pepper.

6. Divide the stuffing into 4 equal portions and then mould each

into a sausage shape and lay 1 sausage in the middle of each of the beaten pieces of chicken.

7. Tuck in the ends and roll up tightly, starting with the longest end. Secure with a couple of cocktail sticks or string.

8. Add the oil to the pan with the melted butter and heat until foaming.

9. Add the chicken and brown on all sides.

10. Add the wine and cook over a high heat until the wine has nearly all evaporated.

11. Add the stock and bring back to the boil.

12. Turn the heat down to simmer, cover the pan with a lid and cook for a further 15-20 mins until the chicken is cooked through. (Check by cutting into the middle of one of the parcels.

There should be no pinkness.)

13. Tear the basil into small pieces and add to the sauce at the end of cooking time so it is just warmed through.

14. When they are cooked, transfer the chicken parcels to individual heated plates with a little of the sauce spooned over the top.

15. Serve either with tagliatelle and steamed courgettes or spinach with a sprinkle of nutmeg, or just veg if you prefer.

Feast of music promised as festival introduces day of jazz to schedule A JAZZ Saturday has been added to the programme for this year’s Chipping Sodbury Festival.

Music will be played at a variety of venues in the town centre throughout the day on June 11 to entertain local people and visitors, starting with a jazz breakfast at The Hampton’s delicatessen and cafe.

Four pubs will then host sessions, with accordion-led jazz at a lunchtime gig at The Horseshoe, followed by an afternoon of jazz standards at the Beaufort Hunt.

There will be early evening swing at The Squire Inn and more swing and Latin at the Royal Oak to end the day.

Four days later, the town hall will host the nine-piece mini-big band Jazzmaster playing classic jazz standards. Billed as an evening of music from Sid Phillips to Charlie Parker, the concert will also feature local singer Sinead McCabe.

Tickets for the concert cost £8 and can be obtained from Swagger in High Street or from the town’s post office.

View from Yate Heritage Centre

O

NE of the most remarkable stories in our regional industrial history is the Filton aircraft enterprise. The fledgling industry of the 1910s was stimulated by the Great War and the demands of the air ministry in the late 1930s. But the aircraft and engine works north of Bristol became the largest aircraft works in the world, employing more than 50,000 people at its height in the 1940s. Even today, vast acres of Filton and Patchway bear testimony to the physical impact of the various aircraft.

Yate Heritage Centre, in collaboration with South Gloucestershire Museums and funded by Airbus, seeks to tell the story of this mighty industry from the early years of aircraft to the modern day electronic business of today.

The information is vast and, realistically, we can but scratch the surface of its history. Aside from the aircraft and accessories, the Bristol Aeroplane Company

(BAC) in its many guises built houses and cars when required, while many individuals had their own pet projects producing anything from clocks to mini aircraft, officially or otherwise.

A Yate and Sodbury history The history of Filton is also the history of the Yate area.

Such was the impact of Filton in drawing in workers from surrounding areas, it would be difficult to assert otherwise. The post-war expansion of Filton and Patchway, as well as the Concorde project, also coincided with the growth of Yate. Between 1961 and 1971, the creation of the Stanshawes estate, briefly the biggest private housing estate in western Europe, enabled the town to grow from 3,800 to 10,100 people, with further expansion in the next two decades. Chipping Sodbury, likewise, experienced rapid growth at this time.

Although this growth has always been deemed to be Bristol overspill, it is clear that great numbers of Yate and Sodbury people shared cars to get to Filton in this era. Rolls-Royce additionally put on two buses for

their workers during the 1970s.

Most Newman and Parnall workers travelled into Yate each morning from the Bristol area, while workers here went to Filton in large numbers. Although this is not possible to quantify, it is clear from our own extensive research that numerous people occupied the new houses and estates in Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Frampton Cotterell and elsewhere and were aware of their fellow Filton workers round and about. Therefore, we hope to be supplying lesser known information in this display among more general background to the industry. Such is the renown of Filton, we will aim to reflect this with a selection of objects in the display and hope it will do justice to the army of workers who travelled to and from this area to Filton in the post-war period. Filton Aircraft will run from May 16 until July 5.

PLANS are being drawn up by the National Trust to repair Horton Court and allow people to once again visit part of the historically important premises.

The grade one-listed manor house, near Chipping Sodbury, was built from the remains of a 12th century Norman hall.

Hilda Wills, a daughter of the Bristol tobacco family, donated it to the National Trust in the 1940s.

The trust leased it out as a home, with an element of public access, but the last tenants left in 2008 and visits had to stop four years later due to the condition of the premises.

However, it has been a popular location for filming, featuring in the likes of TV series Poldark and Wolf Hall.

Lately it was used to film scenes for a supernatural drama to be screened by BBC1 called The Living and The Dead.

It stars Colin Morgan - from The Fall and Merlin - in the lead role of Nathan Appleby and Charlotte Spencer (Glue, Stonemouth and Line of Duty) as Charlotte Appleby, with theseries expected to be shown later this

The proposals to repair and rejuvenate Horton Court mean it will again be used as a private rented house, with selected parts open to visitors.

Recently an open evening was held on site for local people to hear about the early-stage plans

and have a guided tour.

National Trust representatives also asked for comments to help them progress proposals and during a presentation, were told it was vital for at least some of the building and grounds to be open to visitors.

Among the work planned will be the removal of late 19th and early 20th century extensions within an internal, dank courtyard to improve drainage and resolve damp problems.

More natural light will also be allowed into the building.

In a report, South Gloucestershire Council conservation officer Ian Gething said: “The option to retain the house as a private dwelling, as proposed, appears to be the most sympathetic and sensitive solution that will hopefully meet the trust’s stated aims, whilst protecting the very special character and interest of Horton Court.

But he also said: “The trust should be mindful of removing extensive amounts of the 20th century work, which could be seen by some as adding another layer to the social history and development of the building.”

New boss for chamber of commerce JOANNE Cox has become the new chairman of Sodbury Chamber of Commerce. Cox has been involved with the Chamber for the last three years and is a marketing assistant at Hobbs House Bakery.

She takes over from acting chairman, Rich McDonough, who remains as vice chairman.

Joanne is Chipping Sodbury born and bred, educated at Raysfield Primary School and Chipping Sodbury School.

Through her job at Hobbs House Bakery she has helped support local events such as the Festival, Big Lunch, Crib Festival, Victorian Day and Chamber organised events, the Summer Searches and Food and Drink Festivals.

Joanne is qualified in baby massage and baby yoga and she ran her own business teaching at the Ridgewood centre for 6 years whilst her own children were small.

Joanne said “The Chamber has expanded over the last year and we hope to continue welcoming any new Members who would like to be involved.”

A FULL programme of events and initiatives is planned for the coming year in Chipping Sodbury and newly enrolled chair of Sodbury Chamber of Commerce Jo Cox is excited by the challenge that lies ahead.

Jo has spent her entire working life in the town starting when she was just 14 at Penny Farthings Gift Shop. “We are already in the throws of organising some of our most successful annual events and hope to add to these as the year progresses’, commented Jo. The Chamber has grown to 55 members giving the group momentum and allowing them to support some of the other key events that take place in the town. This includes the Sodbury Festival, The Big Lunch and Victorian Day. As Marketing Assistant at Hobbs House Bakery Jo is already busy planning the towns annual Food Festival, which takes place on the 9th and 10th September, and she has persuaded Tom Herbert to take an active role in this years event. The Festival will feature a food trail on the Friday evening between 6pm and 9pm with local eateries and watering holes offering treats and tastings.

The evening will come to a close with a foodie themed Pub Quiz.

‘I am delighted to announce that the Chamber will also run its very popular Summer Search for the third year in succession.’ said Jo. “This year our theme is Woodland Animals and many of the businesses in the town have already agreed to take part”.

The Search is scheduled for the school summer holidays and involves around 25 of the local shops and businesses in Sodbury.

Competition entry forms will be available from participating retailers and the Tourist Information Centre. Soft toy animals will be displayed in Shop Windows and competitors will be entered into a free prize draw.

“The Search is designed to encourage residents and visitors to come into the town and the increased footfall is of benefit to everyone.” continued Jo. It is understood that work will begin soon on the Towns 2017 calendar and following the overwhelming success of the 2016 ‘Now and Then’ calendar a similar theme with a slight variation is in the offing.

Rio games in sight for Olympic hopefuls at Badminton Horse Trials OLYMPIC hopefuls will be in action at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials as the prestigious competition opens with less than 100 days to go until the Rio games.

Big names in the world of eventing are among the 85-strong field set to do battle in the dressage, cross-country and showjumping phases from May 5-8.

But last year’s champion, William Fox-Pitt, has withdrawn Parklane Hawk after a disappointing outing at a recent competition.

Had he been able to try and defend his title - won in 2015 on Chilli Morning - it would have been a remarkable achievement for Fox-Pitt after he sustained a head injury in a fall last autumn and spent weeks in hospital.

However, another rider who has defied the odds is set to ride. New Zealander Andrew Nicholson, who has completed Badminton a record 35 times but

not yet won, received a serious neck injury in a fall last summer, resulting in hours of delicate surgery.

In 98 per cent of cases involving that type of injury, the person would have been paralysed. But the Kiwi returned to competing this season and will rely on Nereo at Badminton, having recently retired the popular grey Avebury.

Reigning Olympic champion, Germany’s Michael Jung, is likely to start as favourite with his London 2012 ride La Biosthetique Sam. But his compatriot Ingrid Klimke is on top form, while past winners returning include New Zealand’s Mark Todd and Jock Paget, along with Australia’s Sam Griffiths. Husband and wife team Tim and Jonelle Price are also expected to put in solid performances.

The Queen will be following the progress of her granddaughter, Zara Tindall,

who rides her London Games horse High Kingdom, while other leading British riders include Nicola Wilson, Tina Cooke, Pippa Funnell, Oliver Townend and Izzy Taylor.

Crowd favourite and past winner Mary King is without a top horse but her daughter Emily makes her Badminton debut on Brookleigh. Dani Evans, who lives near Pensford, will also be looking for good performances

from her two entries, Raphael and Smart Time.

Badminton will also host the Mitsubishi Motors Cup for amateur riders on May 3 and 4.

More medals for twirlers

YATE Star Twirlers have brought home gold from the National Association of Majorettes England second competition of the year.

The Twirlers took first place in the juvenile category of the Traditional Majorette Corp section having claimed silver when they represented their country at last years European Championships.

The girls are currently training hard on several new routines that they hope to perform at the next competition in May. The troupe, founded in 2010 is made up of girls aged 8-30 years.

Brimsham Green after-school club members bowled over by cricketer Khan CRICKETER Masoor Khan called into Brimsham Green School, Yate, to run a coaching session at an after-school club.

The event was organised through the Gloucestershire Cricket Board and watched by members of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, which recently stepped in to help the school facility.

Some 20 students with special needs had used the club regularly every week during term time until the current academic year, when local authority funding cuts took their toll.

But the involvement of the Rotarians meant it can now continue to provide a range of activities for the pupils.

Masoor Khan is a community coach who is involved with the Chance to Shine project - a scheme set up to reverse the decline in state school cricket while teaching life skills,

helping the disadvantaged and promoting the game’s educational benefits.

He is also vice-captain for Dorset in the minor counties

league and plays for Clevedon Cricket Club.

Rotarian Iain Dunnett said: “We could see from how the students responded that their

self-confidence grew. It’s great that they can participate fully in trying out new interests, which really helps them develop important life skills.”

Spring clean for Sodbury as season starts MEMBERS have turned our in force to get Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club ready for the new season. Both the wickets and the pavilion were subject to scrutiny to get the club ready for the new season that starts this month.

Chairman Andy Shield said, “It was good to see so many members from across the club turning up and doing their bit to help. There’s great enthusiasm for the start of the new season and we’re looking forward to a good summer for all our sides.”

The first XI, under the captaincy of Jamie Rendell, open up with a home WEPL Gloucester division clash with Woodmancote on May 7 and will then entertain Stroud on May 21.

by Jerry Swatton, are this season playing in Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League.

They host Lechlade on May 14 and Shurdington on May 28.

Pucklechurch celebrate league safety PUCKELCHURCH Ladies Hockey club have secured their future in Berkeley Division 1. In the end it went down to the last day of the season, and a little help from other teams, as captain Lisa Whitehead reports.

With 5 games left Puckle started with a home game against Old Bristolians. We started off well and a cracking short corner strike from Louise Northam got us on the scoreboard, followed by 2 further goals from Emily Pollock and Sophie Edwards.

However, poor marking and play against a strong team saw the final score 9-3 to Old B’s.

With only 10 players and no goalie, we would next travel to play 3rd in the league, Yate.

Being a player down, we all had to work very hard especially against such a good team.

Yate got the upper hand and won 5-0. Although exhausted, the Puckle girls were pleased with their performance.

One of the most entertaining games of the season - against top

Pucklechurch celebrate a vital victory in their fight against relegation of the league Stroud was next at the WIA. Fielding just 11 players we knew it would be another tough one. It would prove to be a fast and furious game with goals coming from both sides. The final score was a 3-2 defeat.

Clinging onto 7th place, we had to win our last 2 games to guarantee our spot in Div 1.

After trying field a team with many players unavailable, Caz Britton was called upon to come

out of retirement to help us out.

Half time against Lydney saw Pucklechurch 2-0 up, with both goals coming from forward Em Pollock. However, Lydney came back fighting and scored one of their own, but in the end Pucklechurch held on for a 2-1 victory.

The final day saw a must win match at home against Avonmouth who were just 1 point behind us and who had a

game in hand. It was nail-biting stuff with Avonmouth taking the lead.

Pucklechurch hit back, Rhian Phillips hit the back board, sending the crowd and team wild. Time ran out and the game finished in a draw.

The team’s fate would now lie in Avonmouth’s hands as they played their final match against Yate. Yate won, meaning Pucklechurch were safe.

Its a great way to have fun, meet new friends and along and join us on Sunday Mornings.

Womack’s half century of goals secures Old Sodbury’s promotion

OLD Sodbury Under 15’s hosted a well-organised Clifton United on a tired pitch and were made to work hard for their win.

Playing down the slope in the first half and with the wind behind them, Old Sodbury dominated proceedings and it was only a matter of time before Ethan Lloyd put his team in front with a neat finish for his 16th goal of the season.

Ross Womack bagged a landmark 50th goal of an excellent campaign shortly before half time to give the score line a more comfortable feel for the home side.

Clifton reduced the deficit immediately after the break with an unfortunate Sodbury own goal following a failed clearance from a free kick and for a while an unlikely comeback seemed possible.

Sodbury settled their nerves with a decisive winning goal forged by the tenacity of man of the match Callum Heaphy who caused mayhem in Clifton’s defence. Womack drilled in his second of the match to seal the victory and win promotion in the team’s second season together.

A PUPIL from Chipping Sodbury School is celebrating after winning abronze medal at the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships. Marcus Flint won his medal at the event in China.

Representing Great Britain, year 12 student Marcus saved his best performance for last after qualifying for the final in sixth place. “The scores go back to zero for the final so my partner Harry

Marcus Flies to success and I felt we had nothing to lose and we gave it everything.”

Marcus said.

The trip to China gave Marcus a taste of life for a top-ranking competitor, “As soon as we left the airport, we were being asked for autographs and photos. This happened everywhere we went; it

was so surreal” he said.

With only a couple of days to get over jet lag Marcus’s first routine, performed with his partner Harry, was a dynamic throw and catch with somersaults thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately their routine was a bit shaky and they were placed 6th out of 7.

The second day of competition again didn’t go to plan and the pairs balance routine was once again a little unpolished but they managed to qualify for the final, finishing in sixth place.

The pair pulled it together for the final, and their combined routine, a mix of the two previous performances resulted in a bronze medal.

Marcus continued, “It was the worst thing ever having to watch the others compete and wait for the scores. When I realised we had done enough for a bronze I couldn’t believe it. I hugged my

coach who I’ve known since I was five; we were both ecstatic and I had finally achieved my dream. It was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget.”

May, 2016 FLOODING may have forced the cancellation of Castle Coombe’s Easter meeting as a result of Storm Katie, but the racing season finally got underway with the Historic Sports Car Club celebrating its 50th birthday.

One of the most impressive sights was the recreation of the original grid for the ‘Griffiths Formula’ race, which instigated the formation of the club. The 1966 grid included the rare and extremely valuable £3m Ferrari 166 owned by Bernard Worth, which he drove in that race some 50 years ago. Worth was joined by many other guests from that meeting, all keen to share their memories of what turned out to be an historic day.

Racing back on track after Castle Coombe floods lots of local racers taking part in various championships.

Yate’s Chris Hignell competed in Castle Combe’s own Saloon Car Championship in his Team Blast Motorsport Fiat Punto sporting a new colour scheme.

Chris was pleased with his day saying; “Another good day at Castle Combe, car home safely and in one piece and consistent 1 minute 29 second laps”.

Bristol’s Mark Wyatt won class B in the Saloon Car race finishing second overall with

Hadyn King, who finished 5th overall and first in his class.

Hadyn’s result was even more impressive as he was making his racing debut in his Peugeot 106 GTi. The 40-minute Guards Trophy race took pride of place in the programme with Chevron B8s the car of choice. Dominant Simon Hadfield and Michael Schryver won in their B8, whilst the Bristol team of Dan Cox and Mike Gardiner in their 1965 TVR Griffith took a fine class win and

8th overall.

Sodbury make history after stellar season Chipping Sodbury 24 - 3 North Bristol CHIPPING Sodbury have sealed their highest ever league position after finishing in fifth place in their first season back in the Gloucester Premier. Sodbury amassed 13 bonus points during a campaign where they played with swagger and free expression.

In securing a try-scoring bonus point in the last match of the season, the home side didn’t have it all their own way as North Bristol were competitive and determined in their bid to secure a double over Sodbury.

The opening ten minutes found Sodbury on the back foot and entrenched in their own half with North controlling the game through their full back’s boot and dangerous running.

To their credit Sodbury didn’t panic and remained composed as they stuck to their game plan.

Eventually the Sodbury machine crept downfield into North’s half.

Luke Balentine-Smith’s reintroduction at tight-head allowed the Sodbury scrum to inflict a torrid time on their counterparts. Sodbury’s strike runners Phil Player, Pete Butcher and Joe Horton played an essential role in penetrating North Bristol’s defence.

After a quarter of and hour, Sodbury formed a lineout on North’s 22-metre line and sent up Player at the back to avoid getting bogged down. The quick ball was fed to Horton who found Ryan Halford to barge over for the opening try, converted by Dan Bradley.

Just five minutes later the long arms of Bradley reached into a ruck and secured one of Sodbury’s eight turnovers

in the match. Matt Cook was eventually found and the try was a formality.

From the restart, Jake Lewis received the ball just inside the 22 and he romped unmolested to touch down. Once more Bradley converted.

North Bristol then enjoyed a period of control and scored a penalty from 20 metres in front of the posts. It was left to the Sodbury forwards to provide the bonus point that came from a 5-metre lineout. Player was thrown skyward and the ball meant for Ralph was instead taken by an alert Cook who burst over for a second try.

Onlookers witnessed an extraordinary second period in which neither side managed to score and Sodbury uncharacteristically dropped three scoring passes. The joy of the victory and the best-placed league finish was tempered with a little sadness as several members of the team move on.

Respected coach Sean ‘Reg’ Hodges has called time on his stewardship, leaving Sodbury in rude health. Jake Lewis is going to Florida on a surfing scholarship, while the Jason Petchey is off to Australia. Roger Pierce-Jones, who, even at his advanced age, has pulled on a 1st XV shirt this season, is also departing for America.

Club President Ian Aldous said after the game: “This has been a stellar year for CSRFC both on and off the pitch. I look forward to next season and wish each of our departing young men every success”.

Thousands head to Chipping Sodbury for end of season tournament FOOTBALL clubs from all over the west country are heading to Chipping Sodbury for an end of season tournament.

St Nicholas FC are hosting the event at The Ridings.

Held over two days of the

weekend of the 14th and 15th May, the annual Festival brings Bristol Clubs together to compete against teams from further afield including Wales, Wiltshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire The tournament provides the

expected 2000 visitors with kids entertainment and after the final whistle on day two there will be live entertainment in the bar.

Youngsters coached by England star THE next generation of Chipping Sodbury players were recently given an insight into what the future could hold by Bristol and England rugby star Amber Reed.

The international took the towns under 13s Little Ladies for a coaching session at the teams home ground on the Ridings in Sodbury. The session included games and covered attacking play and drills.

The opportunity to learn from one of the best in the game gave the young hopefuls the opportunity to discover what it takes to play at the highest level and to apply what they learned in

the final matches of their season.

The U13 girl’s team are looking to recruit new players and are seeking current year 6 and 7 girls to join their squad.
