Clubs celebrate sporting success Western League football is on the cards for Chipping Sodbury FC, as rugby club and Yate FC also find reason to celebrate.

The sweet smell of success in in the spring air as the long winter season draws to a close.

Clubs in both Yate and Chipping Sodbury are celebrating achievements both on the pitch and off it.

Western League football is within the grasp of Chipping Sodbury Town FC after a programme of works at their Ridings ground. A stand, hard standing and fencing have been installed, and on the pitch a top five finish has put them in the frame for the higher division.

At Lodge Road, despite the changes in the senior side, Yate’s Under 18’s have done the double, winning their league and lifting the cup too.

Followers of the oval ball are also celebrating after Chipping Sodbury secured promotion to the Gloucester Premier League.

A LANDMARK stage in the building of the Yate Riverside project is on track to be reached by the summer.

Good weather has allowed work to progress according to plan on the scheme on Link Road, which will be anchored by a new cinema.

Yate Shopping Centre manager, Andy Lowrey, said: “We are very fortunate that the weather has been in our favour.

“Over the next few months the skeleton of the built development will start to take shape with ‘topping out’ expected to take place in mid-July.”

The scheme involves creating new shops and restaurants, along with the long hoped-for cinema, as an extension to the shopping centre.

Mr Lowrey said: “It is anticipated the retail and restaurant units will be handed over to the end users for fitting out by mid-September, with opening scheduled for December and the cinema by next Easter.”

The most recent work involved laying the foundations, comprising some 2,500 cubic metres of concrete, ahead of erecting the steelwork.

By the time the scheme is ready for topping out – the stage when a building reaches its highest point – more than 500 tonnes of steel will have been put in place.

The Cineworld six-screen cinema will be supported by two restaurant chains – Prezzo and US-themed Dean’s Diner – while fashion chain Next will take one of three retail units.

Mr Lowrey said it was hoped to make further announcements about other operators soon.

He said: “It is fair to say that there is overwhelming demand for space in Yate.

“We will also shortly be starting work on plans to accommodate new tenants in the main shopping centre.”

An update on works has been circulated to neighbouring households recently through a newsletter produced by contractors ISG. Copies are also on noticeboards in the shopping centre.

Beating the bounds – don’t forget CHILDREN will turn upside down on Yate Common during the ancient ceremony of beating the bounds.

The custom is carried out on Rogation Sunday, when youngsters discover where the common’s boundaries are in order to help protect the land.

Tradition says that during the event they have to be turned upside down at the corners in order to remember the boundaries.

Town mayor, Wully Perks, local families and members of the Friends of Yate Common group will be among those taking part in the ceremony on Sunday, May 10.

It starts at 3pm at the St Briavels Drive entrance to the common and will last for between an hour and 90 minutes.

Residents are invited to join in, with the event suitable for pushchairs.

Youth café’s future secured for hundreds of users YATE’S youth café has been transferred to the town council after cuts threatened the future of the distinctive purple building.

Hundreds of youngsters use the Armadillo centre in Station Road, which opened nearly four years ago with support from both civic leaders and South Gloucestershire Council.

But South Gloucestershire could no longer afford to fund it due to the level of cuts it had to make, leading to a long period of negotiation between the two authorities.

Now Yate Town Council has taken over the building and staff, with South Gloucestershire making a large financial settlement that will help run the venue for the next few years.

Chris Willmore, who chairs the centre’s management committee, said: “I am delighted to announce that the Armadillo has transferred to Yate Town Council. This secures its future and is great news for the huge numbers of young people who use it regularly.

“I really want to thank the officers and councillors of Yate Town Council for all their work in making sure a deal was done that will mean the Armadillo continues.

“It is open six days a week, after school, in evenings and on Saturdays for young people to come and either chill or join in with whatever is going on.

“Hundreds of young people use it every week - not to mention the groups and businesses who hire it during the day and the people who choose it for their children’s birthday parties.”

Ms Willmore said the Armadillo had the support of businesses, charities and the police, had “significantly reduced issues of youth vandalism” and cut complaints about young people.

She said: “It’s really good news. The transfer has occurred and Yate Town Council now owns the entire building, South Gloucestershire has transferred its ownership and given us a

dowry of £297,000 towards future costs, which is brilliant.”

It had taken 15 years of talking, planning, designing and construction, with input from many young people, to get the £1.5 million café operating in the summer of 2011, with Prince Edward officially opening it during a visit later that year.

apprenticeship scheme to help local teenagers get work, earn a salary and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Sophie Webber is among those to have benefited, joining the café as a business administration apprentice straight from sixth form.

The scheme has operated for more than three years and anyone interested can get information from the national apprenticeship scheme website.

on the 11th April – a total of 1003 miles.

Linda rode as a thank you to St Peter’s Hospice who provided a tremendous amount of care and support to her mum and Linda’s family. At first Linda was planning the challenge by herself

Helicopters over Yate and Sodbury in big NATO exercise MILITARY helicopters seen flying over Yate and Chipping Sodbury were taking part in a major NATO exercise.

The bi-annual exercise ran for 13 days and involved the Royal Navy, the RAF and the Army across various UK locations. It was designed to improve joint operations between the armed forces of participating countries.

Exercise Joint Warrior featured 55 warships and submarines, 70 aircraft and around 13,000 personnel from 14 nations. Aircraft operated from locations such as RAF Brize Norton and the St Athan base in South Wales.

A number of people in Yate and Sodbury saw distinctive twinrotor Chinooks used in the exercise, some of which carried vehicles suspended beneath them.

National Lottery funds improvements to Tourist Information Centre

Tiddler hooks £50 for Paul It might not be much to look at, but this tiny fish was worth catching for Paul Elms. Taking part in the annual South Gloucestershire Show fishing contest in Henfield, he caught the first fish of the competition and bagged £50 for his troubles. He’s going to need some slightly heftier specimens to progress to the finals of the competition, held at the South Glos Show in The Windmill Fisheries Showground on August 1 and 2.

A refurbishment to the Tourist Information Centre in Sodbury and the launch of its upgraded web site have been funded by the National Lottery.

Initiated and prepared by former Centre Manager Laura Lee Phillips, the application for an Awards for All Grant took several weeks to compile.

Visitors to the town and local residents can now find out what is happening locally online at www.chippingsodburytic.com . The site is constantly updated and includes details of forthcoming events as well as information on where to stay and things to do.

The Centre also acts as a booking agent for shows, theatre productions, festivals and concerts. Tickets are now on sale for the South Cotswold Beer Festival on the 10/11th July and the Bath and West Show, which runs from the 27th to the 30th May.

Sodbury insurance group on acquisition trail Jelf Insurance has expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of the Hamilton Bond Group.

Sodbury churches hope for early welcome to new bishop after landmark appointment ANGLICAN churchgoers in Chipping Sodbury are hoping to welcome the new bishop of Gloucester to the town once Rachel Treweek is enthroned later this year.

The current archdeacon of Hackney will become the Church of England’s most senior woman bishop, with her area of responsibility including Chipping Sodbury, Old Sodbury and Little Sodbury.

Although two other women have become bishops since legislation was passed last year enabling them to take up the role, Archdeacon Rachel, 52, will make history by being the first to run a diocese and the first to take up a seat in the House of Lords.

It is anticipated that she will spend some time getting to know the diocese once she is formally installed as bishop, visiting parishes and meeting clergy and churchgoers.

Outdoor literacy lessons at Brimsham Green Brimsham Green School have created an outdoor classroom for a series of trial English lessons.

The initial focus will be on using the space to provide physical and tactile experiences which will improve students written descriptive skills and to foster a better connection with the local natural environment.

The classroom will be based around a fire-pit with bench seats and a rough table set in a woodland clearing on the school site.

The students will be encouraged to try fire-lighting methods, small-scale mapmaking and natural sound recording such as birdsong.

Following the trial, the outdoor classroom will be available to all departments.

There has already been interest from other school departments as well as from local primary schools who are keen to make use of the project.

Daniel Fox, Outdoor Literacy Project leader at Brimsham Green said; “The pilot project begins this week and we hope that giving students these nature-related experiences will enrich their descriptive and narrative writing skills by enlivening their imaginations.

We hope to offer our students a more varied experience at school and particularly in English”’.

The play, by Michael Cooney, is being performed at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy on 11, 12 and 13 June at 7.30pm.

Cooney extracts every ounce of confusion from his tale, in a comedy that slowly turns increasingly more ridiculous and bizarre.

The Court Players, who have been presenting Drama, Plays, Pantomimes, Musicals, Farces and at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy for 56 years.

They won the National Operatic

and Dramatic Association (NODA) District 14 Award for Outstanding Achievement with their last production of “The Last Resort”.

The award was presented at the NODA South West Awards Dinner at the Bristol City Centre Marriott Hotel which was attended by over 350 drama addicts from all over the South West. The production was also nominated for the Best Comedy Award.

In the recent Bristol and Avon One Act Drama Festivals The Court Players received nominations in the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Play categories.

Will Writing & Estate Planning

Players will be holding an open Rehearsal on Tuesday 19th May at Rangeworthy Hall at 7.30pm where they hope to entice the local community to come along and watch their rehearsal and possibly “read-in” a part or two.

They will also give the public a chance to look backstage and learn all about the hard

work involved in putting on a show. There will also be some displays where examples of previous productions will be on show. It’s part of Voluntary Arts Week, which shines a light on thousands of amateur societies that contribute creativity and commitment to their communities.

Town council offers community grants Grants are being made available to local organisations from Yate Town Council. It is offering the cash boost to groups that provide a service to the local community.

A council spokesperson said: “Each year, Yate Town Council award grants recognising the contribution made by the voluntary sector. If your group works for the benefit of Yate parishioners with the intention of improving the range of activities in the town, then you may well be eligible”.

Applications must be made by no later than the 26th June 2015. Groups that have previously been successful with the scheme include the South Glos Disability Equality Network, Golden Oldies, Children’s Playlink, Friends of Kingsgate Park and Friends of Yate Common.

abbit awareness week takes place annually in May to help promote the welfare of this increasingly popular pet, which is also the aim of this month’s article!

Rabbits are social animals and are best kept in pairs or small groups to enable them to express natural behaviour such as mutual grooming. They should not be kept with other species such as guinea pigs, as they have differing husbandry/dietary needs and ways of communicating. Also bullying can occur.

Rabbits are crepuscular which means they are most active at dawn and dusk, similar to their wild counterparts. They should be kept in the biggest hutch/run you can provide. The minimum dimensions should allow the rabbit to fully lie down and stretch out in all directions, be tall enough to allow them to sit up (and ideally stand) in without their ears touching the roof and long enough to make three continuous hops. The hutch should be ideally attached to an outside run or exercise area so that they have the opportunity to stretch their legs when they want to. It is important to check and groom your rabbit regularly in order to keep an eye out for flystrike which is especially common in the warm summer months (flies can be attracted to rabbits bottoms and lay eggs in this area, which hatch into maggots), as well as any other abnormalities.

system to cope with this. They produce two types of faeces, hard round droppings and softer shiny caecotrophs. In a healthy rabbit you shouldn’t see the latter, as caecotrophs are eaten by rabbits directly from their bottoms to allow them to digestive their food for a second time and extract as much nutrition as possible. An ideal rabbits diet should consist of large quantities of good quality hay and grass, with small amounts of complete rabbit pellet food and vegetables such as broccoli, kale and dandelions, with fresh water always available.

Vaccination is important to keep your pet healthy and we recommend vaccinating annually against the fatal diseases, myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. This is advised for indoor rabbits as well as those living outdoors. Fun in the sun at Kingsgate Park for Yate families FAMILIES turned out in force for the annual Easter Egg Extravaganza in Kingsgate Park, Yate, with people queuing in the sunshine to join in the fun.

Some 1,500 people attended, with more than 700 children taking part and receiving a chocolate egg.

There were also 40 entries in an Easter bonnet contest, all earning a prize for parading their colourful hats.

The event was organised by Yate Town Council in conjunction with the Friends of Kingsgate Park, with support also given by local businesses.

Many families stayed in the park afterwards for a picnic and to let youngsters enjoy the play areas.

The town council and the Friends will next be joining forces to stage the annual community music festival in the park on June 20 and 21.

Antiques Roadshow star heads for Chipping Sodbury CERAMICS expert Lars Tharp will be in Chipping Sodbury to give an insight into his time with the BBC Antiques Roadshow team.

Danish-born Lars will be guest of the Severn Valley Decorative and Fine Arts Society, which meets monthly in the town hall.

His visit has been arranged under the umbrella of Chipping Sodbury Festival and coincides with a two-day exhibition in the Baptist Church that has been organised by the society.

The exhibition will be open on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, with the talk by Lars – A Life on the Antiques Roadshow and Beyond – starting at 7.30pm on the Friday, also in the church.

New leisure centre members donate special treats to families CHOCOLATE treats were given to Yate and Chipping Sodbury foodbank as part of an Easter campaign by the organisation that runs South Gloucestershire’s leisure centres.

The Circadian Trust operates eight Active Centres across the district, including in Yate, and the campaign involved those people enrolling as members being asked for an Easter egg in return for a reduced joining fee.

More than 200 eggs were received as a result, all of them given to foodbanks and charities to be handed out to families in need as a special treat.

Erica Cross, the trust’s marketing manager, said: “We were delighted with the results of our campaign. We not only saw more than 200 people start a healthier, active lifestyle, but we also helped local families that were struggling to get by.”

World’s best head for Badminton to take up top equestrian challenge ONE of the biggest events in the sporting calendar is about to get under way with the launch of the 2015 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

Leading riders from around the world will make their bid to add their name to the famous trophy, with some 80 horse and rider combinations in the line-up.

They include Olympic, world and European championship partnerships, with Kristina Cook, William Fox-Pitt and Nicola Wilson among the home side hoping to claim the title for Britain for the first time since 2009.

Oliver Townend, who won the event that year, rides Armada in an attempt to regain the title but last year’s champion, Australia’s Sam Griffiths, has two chances of keeping the silverware with his 2014 winner Paulank Brockagh and London 2012 ride Happy Times.

Other recent winners – New Zealand’s Mark Todd and Jock Paget, together with Aussie Paul Tapner – also made the cut.

But one of the most determined riders is Andrew Nicholson, who holds the record for 33 Badminton completions but has never yet won.

The Kiwi has had to withdraw his stable star, Avebury, from this year’s event but still has a strong duo in Nereo and Calico Joe. Pippa Funnell has also qualified two horses, Redesigned and Second Supreme, while

After two days of dressage, riders will tackle the second cross-country course designed

Going in the opposite direction to last year, he said he had produced what was meant to be a flowing route over the 31 obstacles that cover four miles.

The first real test comes at Huntsman’s Close, with the

first of four water obstacles two fences further on at the southern end of the lake.

The feature lake fences are set to attract the usual crowds, while riders will be happy to only have to cross the Vicarage Ditch once, at the Mirage Pond.

Another pond, used for the first time last year, will be approached from a different direction to 2014 and once cleared, leads horses and riders onto the final third of the course.

A GRANT of £34,900 has been given to St John the Baptist Church in Old Sodbury to help pay for vital repairs.

The money is part of a £30 million package announced by the Government to help churches that are raising money to fix roofs, gutters and drains.

Nearly £500,000 from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund was divided between nine Anglican churches in the diocese of Gloucester, in which St John’s falls.

The fund is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund on behalf of the Government and a second round of grants totalling £25 million will be awarded next year.

The grant for St John’s will go towards the estimated £54,000 cost of fixing its leaking roof.

A BUILDING company working on a proposed housing site in Yate has been fined £10,000 for breaching planning rules.

Prosecutions were brought against GMT Developments (UK) Ltd and its site manager, Russell Davies, by South Gloucestershire Council for failing to comply with a temporary stop notice that had been served on the land in North Road.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges when they were heard at North Avon Magistrates Court in Yate.

As well as the fine, the company was ordered to pay the council’s costs of £1,395 and a £120 victim surcharge. Davies was fined £500 and ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge.

The court hearing followed the issuing of the temporary stop notice and a subsequent court injunction against GMT Developments, which did not have planning permission to carry out work on the site. An application for the homes was in outline form only.

But the council received complaints in March about work taking place there and on investigation found building materials and a portable building on site.

Work had started on foundations, material to protect tree roots had been removed and a number of trees covered by preservation orders had not been protected.

An immediate temporary stop notice was issued and the case pursued to secure an injunction from Bristol County Court - the strongest available planning enforcement.

The council was granted an interim injunction by the court at the first hearing and a full injunction at a further hearing, which required work to stop. GMT was also ordered to pay the council £3,500 to cover legal costs.

The prosecutions came after enforcement officers discovered that work had continued in breach of the temporary stop notice for several days after being issued.

A council spokesman said the fine was one of the highest issued for non-compliance with a South Gloucestershire notice in the past ten years. He said it was also only the second time a penalty of that scale had been used nationally in the past six months.

Rescue bid for Yate sports complex A PLAN is being drawn up to ensure Yate Outdoor Sports Complex remains open to local clubs after being threatened by spending cuts.

The complex (YOSC) next to Brimsham Green School is made available to clubs and other users when not needed by the school under a dual-use arrangement.

Circadian Trust, which also runs South Gloucestershire Council’s leisure centres, currently manages the facilities outside school hours on behalf of the council but its contract will run out at the end of October.

The council has to make further cuts and said it would save money by not renewing the contract. However, it said it would be making new arrangements to allow continued community use.

That involves Yate Town Council putting together a deal with Yate and District Athletics Club and other users.

Summer search for sheepdogs in Sodbury People are being given the chance to round up some sheepdogs in Chipping Sodbury over the summer holidays.

The event follows the success of the Sodbury Sheep Search last year which attracted over a thousand visitors. They had to find 25 lost sheep in shop windows with the lucky winners becoming the new owners of the toy sheep.

This summer, the Sodbury Chamber of Commerce have organised a sheepdog trial. A sheepdog will be looked after in the town’s Tourist Information Centre and people will be asked to look out for her fluffy toy puppies around local shops.

Vintage and Handmade Fair comes to Sodbury A popular vintage event visits Chipping Sodbury later this month. The Vintage and Handmade Fair has established itself as a firm favourite with locals and visitors to the town and offers something for the collector, maker and lover of the vintage lifestyle.

From its small beginnings in 2008 when it was held at the village hall in Rangeworthy, the event has enjoyed a successful five years at its new home, Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

Rocking the Royal Oak An annual music concert is set to return in May. The Royal Oak Charity Kollective, or R.O.C.K. has raised £6000 for the Childrens Hospice South West since the event started seven years ago.

Chairman of ROCK and event organizer Ted Hughes said; “We have around 8 or 9 bands taking part this year and all give their time for free, allowing all money collected to be donated to the charity. Mother’s Union prepares for centenary celebrations The Mother’s Union in Yate is celebrating its 100 birthday this summer.

Although set up in 1876 by Mary Sumner in Hampshire, Mothers’ Union reached Yate in 1915.

The Mother’s Union have been celebrating its centenary all this year but they culminate in a parish-wide festival over the weekend of 11th-14th June.

Events include a barn dance and performances from the West Gallery Choir and Folk On. The family fun day at the Heritage Centre Green is on June 13.

Toppled park tree to become artwork

AN ash tree in Kingsgate Park, Yate, that was brought down by strong winds will be turned into a practical artwork.

The main trunk will be carved into a feature that children can play on, now that its branches have been either turned into chippings, kept for woodland path edging or put aside for informal seating.

Meanwhile, the trunk has been made stable and sharp edges rounded off while a decision is taken on how best to give it another use.

Shoppers in Yate were treated to a high-octane experience as local local racing drivers and their cars from Team Blast Motorsports made a visit.

Past historians such as Percy Couzens and Pat Alcock created fantastic histories of our area during the 20th century. However, history constantly evolves and with both professional researchers and local volunteers involved in these new projects, our local historical knowledge will advance further than ever before.

The Victoria County History in South Gloucestershire Rose Wallis, Contributing editor for Yate and the Sodburys This summer, the Victoria County History of Gloucestershire will publish its first history on the South of the historic county. The forthcoming history of Yate sees the continuation of a national project started more than a century ago, to write a history of England, county-by-county, parish-byparish.

Yate has a rich and varied past; its development as Gloucestershire’s first new town in the post-war era masks its long rural and industrial history.

Indeed, studying Yate provides a lens through which to view many of the significant events in our national heritage, and how they shaped a single community.

The new book endeavours to encapsulate this story, charting the parish’s development from the pre-Roman to the present day.

Factory with aircraft on airfield was made possible by the generous support of South Gloucestershire County Council, the Yate and District Heritage Centre, and a group of hardworking local volunteers. Thanks to the continued support of the Heritage Centre, and the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, work in the area is moving forward.

Research is underway on the ancient manors of Old and Little Sodbury, and the town of Chipping Sodbury, whose urban history dates back to the end of the 12th century. Although providing quite a contrast to Yate, the history of the Sodburys and its neighbour have been intertwined for centuries – from competing claims to Medieval markets, to their development as part of the expanding Bristol

region in the modern period.

Together, these new works draw out the diverse and intriguing history of this area.

‘Religion and politics go together like a horse and carriage’

Y

ou have heard it said; ‘Never mix religion and politics’. In actual fact it is impossible to separate the two because true religion must influence every dimension of a person’s life. One could not be one thing in one’s faith and another thing in one’s politics without being a hypocrite.

Jesus Christ constantly clashed with the religious leaders of His day because they said one thing but had their own interests in mind rather than the genuine love and care of others.

On the 7th of May millions will cast their vote and our next Prime Minister will be appointed.

The nation will decide which political party will be in power and gain the greatest influence to shape the future of our nation.

There will never be a perfect political party, a perfect system

or perfect Prime Minister. We are all so aware of the failure of our governments to operate with integrity and justice. Corruption and compromise have been the hallmarks of years of bad leadership that have brought us to the place we are in our nation.

People do want change, but they long for more than just a change of political party. Men and women long for something beyond what they can bring about for themselves. The bible says that one day ‘the government will be upon the shoulders of The Lord Jesus and that His government will bring peace that will never end.’

(Isaiah 9 v 7) His government will not be through a political system but through heart relationship with us. He will not offer religion but a living relationship with Himself.

This is true religion and the first of the Lord’s commandments for us; ‘to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

We have seen what wrong religion can do around our world in every generation. Is it not time for us to return to The Lord in heart relationship and love? Not to a stone cold set of religious rules and regulations that create separation and injustice, but to God Himself.

Jesus said; ‘I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.’ In every decision let God be your influence. In our future let us return to The Lord. Let His peace, His truth and love influence our government until He establishes His reign of love.

Big names headline at Sodbury Jazz and Blues Festival

The full line up of the Sodbury Jazz and Blues Festival has been unvelied.

Originally launched as a Jazz event in 2011, the Sodbury Jazz & Blues Festival has played host to some of the jazz worlds top names including Kenny Ball, Jacqui Dankworth, Digby Fairweather, Chris Farlowe, Acker Bilk, Pete Allen, and Clare Teal.

Appearing at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Friday 5th June, the highly acclaimed 12 piece show band the Pasadena Roof Orchestra will entertain with their stylish versions of ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s early swing and hot jazz.

American saxophonist, composer and arranger, Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis and his Assembly visit the town the following day bringing with them the soul, funk and blues songstress Lizzie Deane.

Ellis, commonly known as the King of Funk, played with the James Brown Revue between 1965 and 1969 and appeared on many of Brown’s most notable recordings.

Blood Pressure Day helps save lives The importance of a regular blood pressure check was underlined after the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury tested 111 people during their annual Know Your Blood Pressure Day. 17% of those seen were referred to their own GPs after it was discovered that their BP was elevated.

“Over the years we know that we have saved lives by alerting the public to how important it is to have your blood pressure checked”, retired GP Tony Sarafian said. “We have met several people that have thanked us for identifying their life threatening hypertension who have gone on to receive life saving treatment”.

Although less people were tested this year than last, the club targeted people that had not had their BP taken for more than a year, or in some cases had never had a test. The message was clear; having a test could prevent an early stroke or heart attack.

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

his month I have prepared a detailed recipe celebrating wonderful Spring ingredients, British asparagus and crab. Nothing beats the flavour of British asparagus and we are particularly lucky to have Wye valley asparagus on our doorstep, sourced from Iain the greengrocer on Sodbury High Street. The season only lasts a couple of weeks, so enjoy it whilst you can.

I’ve also used brown shrimps available from quality supermarkets, but if you can’t find any, just increase the crab by 100g instead.

The recipe may look complicated, but it’s all in the prep. Just pop this luxury risotto in the oven and enjoy your guests’ company. The Parmesan crisps are very easy and give it a Masterchef touch. Make this as a change for either of the May bank holidays and bask in the compliments.

Oven Baked Crab, Brown Shrimp and Asparagus Risotto with Handmade Parmesan Crisps Serves 4 Ingredients: • Asparagus – 400g • Red Onion - 1, finely chopped • Carnaroli or Arborio Risotto Rice – 100g • Quality Vegetable Stock – hot, 1 ½ litres • Dry White Wine – 200ml • Crabmeat - I like to use both brown and white - 200g • Brown shrimps - 100g • Crème fraiche – 4 tbsps • Fresh basil – small handful, torn into small pieces.

• Zest of 1 lemon For the Parmesan crisps • Freshly grated Parmesan -100g

Here’s what you do:

Preheat oven to 190° C, 375° F, gas Mark 5 1. First prep the asparagus.

Rinse and cut off any woody ends.

2. Slice the spears at an angle into 3cm lengths.

3. Pour the wine and stock into a wide pan and bring to the boil.

4. Add the asparagus and cook for 2 mins or until just tender.

5. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon, place in a colander and run cold water over the spears. Leave to one side.

6. Put the hot stock and wine mixture into a deep ovenproof dish.

7. Stir in the rice.

8. Bake (uncovered) in the pre-heated oven for about 20 mins, then stir and check there is enough liquid for the remaining

cooking time. Add more warm stock or water if the dish looks dry and the rice isn’t cooked.

Most of the liquid will have been absorbed when the rice is cooked through, but it should still has a bite to it.

9. Whilst the risotto is cooking, make the crisps.

10. Line a baking tray with nonstick paper. Put 4 small handfuls of the cheese at intervals with a plenty of space in between as they will spread.

11. Flatten them with your hand and bake for 6-7 mins (on the lowest shelf) until golden brown.

12. Lift the paper onto a cooling rack and leave the crisps to set.

13. Once the risotto is cooked, switch off the oven. Stir in the fresh lemon zest, crab, shrimps, asparagus and basil and finally the crème fraiche. Season with salt and paper.

14. Cover with foil and return to the oven for 4-5 mins until the additions are warmed through.

15. Serve onto warmed plates, topped with a Parmesan crisp.

New management at Yate Town FC Yate Town have confirmed the appointment of Craig Laird as their First Team Manager and Rob Boyd as his assistant. Craig has previously undertaken management roles at Weston Super Mare, Bridgewater Town, and more recently as Assistant Manager at Weymouth. Rob has worked with Craig at Weston.

With extensive wellestablished contacts with local teams and academies across the region the new management team say they were attracted

by Yate’s potential, and were particularly drawn to the club because of the success of the Youth Development section.

Nigel Hawkins, who is continuing in his role as Director of Football and was instrumental in bringing the pair to Yate Town, said; “I am delighted that all connected with the Club are excited by the possibilities of more success in the future and can look forward to next season with great anticipation”.

The new structure, in place ahead of the Easter programme, started positively with wins against Bishops Cleeve and fifth placed Larkhall Athletic over the holiday period.

This impressive start continued with a goalless draw against Champions Merthyr Town, watched by almost 400 fans at Lodge Road.

A 1-1 draw at Taunton Town followed but Yate missed out on a play off spot to Larkhall and Taunton.

The Under 18’s team proved to be the most successful for Yate, winning their division in the Somerset Floodlight Youth League, losing only one match in

A win in the Gloucestershire FA Under 18 Shield followed when they beat Gloucester City 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time, a first for the club in this prestigious competition.

The Youth Team just missed out in the Final of the Somerset FYL League Cup, in what would have been an unprecedented treble, losing 2-1 to their Premier division opponents Weston in another excellent, pulsating Final.

A hectic summer ahead for Chipping Sodbury’s cricketers CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club are preparing for another season with plenty at stake for all five Saturday senior sides.

The local league structure will undergo a dramatic overhaul at the end of the season placing

the onus firmly on each team to finish as high as they possibly can in their division when the new league set-up comes into force.

Sodbury’s first XI, captained once again by opening batsman Bryan Jater, open their campaign in the Gloucester division of the West of England Premier League (WEPL) with a trip to Woodmancote.

Their first home game against newly promoted Cheltenham Civil Service is on May 9.

The second XI continue to be led by experienced batsman Jerry Swatton.

Sodbury 3rd’s, who play in Division Three of the Bristol & District League, will be once again be skippered by Chris Young and kick off with a derby trip to Pucklechurch.

Richard Bennett is the new captain of Sodbury 4th’s who this year compete in Division Nine.

Their first game is at home to Bristol Lions on May 2.

And finally Sodbury 5th’s find themselves in Division Ten under the watchful eye of veteran Richard Deane. Their first opponents on May 2 are Coalpit Heath, at Tormarton CC. Sodbury, a communitybased club sponsored by Power Systems, have a busy Sunday schedule. Under new captain Tom Febry they have re-entered the Village League.

Their Division Three campaign is launched with home friendlies against Westbury (May 3) and Portishead Pirates (May 10) before a league date against Winterbourne (May 17).

The Sods set for Western League Chipping Sodbury Town FC are within touching distance of promotion to the Toolstation Western League, after weeks of ground redevelopment Automatic promotion is not available to The Sods, because any team playing in the Gloucester County League can only qualify if they are in a position to offer superior facilities and meet demanding FA criteria.

“We already have what is widely recognised as the best playing surface in the league but we also had to deliver a number of ground improvements by the 31 March deadline to support our application’ said club Chairman Mike Fox. “We now have a hard-standing on two sides of the ground, perimeter fencing and a stand for 50 supporters and I would like to thank everyone involved for their support during this busy time for the club’.

If elected to the Western League, the club will also have to install floodlights, for which they now have planning permission and an additional stand providing seating for 50.

On the pitch, with two games of the season remaining,

the team lies in second place behind Cheltenham Civil Service. Finishing in the top five is another condition of promotion and with a final home match against league leaders Cheltenham on the 25th April, the team should secure at least 4th place.

Having drawn 3-3 away to Cheltenham at the beginning of April, after surrendering a 3-1 lead, the Sods are determined to secure all three points in their last home game of the season.

The club have come a long way since it was first formed in 1885, 130 years ago. They began life as a semi-pro club playing in the Western League but disbanded in 1954. They restarted four years later as a junior side in the Dursley and Wotton league.

If elected to the Western League, the club will sit just 6 layers below the Football League and will be eligible to play in the FA Vase with the prospect of meeting Conference League sides.

“We very much believe in developing players from a young age and have strong ties with the local youth teams including

St Nicks”, Chairman and club sponsor Mike Fox added. “We launched our Under 18s team this year and they have fared well in the Gloucestershire North Combination League”.

The club runs three teams with the reserves playing in the first division of the District League and the second team in division two. The first team has played in the Gloucestershire County League for 8 years. The club ethos is very much based on developing young players and offering them the opportunity to play at a high standard by rising through the ranks.

With up to 70% funding for ground development available from the Football Foundation, the club relies on match day and programme sponsorship and is always on the look out for new sponsorship.

The decision on their application to join the Western League is expected shortly and if successful will herald a new era for Chipping Sodbury Town.

SCHOOLGIRL Millie Dawson, 12, has won a national competition to design a fence for the Badminton Horse Trials cross-country course.

The year seven Redland High School pupil will now see her fence being jumped by leading riders at the international.

The children’s design contest was organised by Sense, the charity chosen to be supported this year at Badminton. During the event, the organisation will be able to promote its work and raise much needed funds.

Sodbury Ladies do the Double over Gordano

Another clean sheet ends the season in style Unable to fulfil their fixture earlier in the season despite multiple attempts to rearrange, Gordano agreed to play a ‘double header’ at Sodbury’s home ground, with the result standing for both games.

Arriving with only 13 players and refusing the offer of subs, Sodbury agreed to drop their numbers to match and were just pleased to finally be able to play the game.

Winning by just one point in the dying seconds of the last gruelling match following their impressive victory in their previous game - and having conceded no points in three of their last four fixtures - Chipping Sodbury were determined to win and win well.

Sodbury opened the scoring with two early tries in quick succession, one by Tina Best and the other by Katie Summerville.

A few moments later a clean break by second row Vicki Britton whipped the sideline into a frenzy. She tore away from the trailing defenders and sprinted almost the entire length of the pitch down the wing unopposed – certain to score. Supporters celebrated the superb spectacle but whispers began to circulate and word travelled down the field that Britton had dropped the ball over the line. With an entire gallery of photo evidence it is unlikely that she will live it down for quite some time.

All action Flanker Becky Petchey grabbed two tries in the first half but was denied a certain hat trick when it was decided to utilise the strong bench and give

everyone a run out.

Jane Dixon added to the mounting score line when she dropped a winger, slipped into full back and using her impressive pace outran defenders with ease to go over the line and widen the gap at the half time whistle.

The home side with a newly found fire in their bellies went into the second half as ferocious as the first and continued to rack up the score. Gordano were not without their passion and did well with a depleted team to spoil some of Sodbury’s attacks.

Tina Best at Centre added to the score going over in the corner after outpacing the opposition and Kelly Anne Garland also broke through to score her third in two games. Having a blinder of a game both defensively and in attack Gayle Dodson snatched a fantastically opportunistic try when the ball spilled loose and she quickly reacted to dive onto the floor to ground it over the line.

Sub Chessie Kelly, back from injury, scored within minutes of her introduction when the ball found its way quickly through the

hands to the wing. She nimbly stepped round the opposition from just inside the half way line and found herself in space. A quick reassuring glance behind gave Kelly the confidence to make it all the way, effortlessly tearing towards the posts to touch down.

Prop Michelle Deverill converted four out of the nine tries as Chipping Sodbury kept another clean sheet to win 53-0.

Yate’s Chris Morris in his a 62-0 against Suzuki Igniswin competing Westbury. at Castle Combe on 6th April in his Class AS of the Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship.

Chris managed fastest in his class during qualifying, despite only having 3rd and 5th gears. Fixing the gear linkage before the first race he went onto finish 1st in class in race one. Race two was stopped early due to accidents but he again finished 1st in class and achieved the fastest lap in class.
