Road to remain affected by temporary railway bridge closure into July DRIVERS have been reminded to find an alternative route to travel between Chipping Sodbury and the Codrington area while the Dodington Road bridge remains closed.

The bridge was shut on May 23 to allow Network Rail to carry out work linked to its electrification programme and won’t re-open until Sunday, June 5.

It is all part of preparation for the arrival of a new fleet of electric trains and involves raising the sides of the bridge and installing coping stones to stop people climbing onto the structure.

Network Rail said when complete, there would be a barrier between those using the bridge and the overhead high voltage electric lines needed to power the electric trains.

The temporary closure was necessary because the bridge is too narrow to safely accommodate traffic, pedestrians and the team carrying out the work.

But the period of time chosen included half term in order to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Further work will be completed during a series of four Saturday night closures starting on June 11 and running into early July, with the bridge shut between 10pm and 8am.

However, although the closures affect drivers, access remains for pedestrians and cyclists.

Andy Haynes, Network Rail’s project director for the West of England, said: “The work at Dodington Road bridge is an essential part of our railway upgrade plan and will pave the way for electrification and the benefits this will bring for residents.

“These benefits include faster trains with more seats and more legroom for passengers and less noise and cleaner air for those who live close to the railway.”

TRADERS in Chipping Sodbury are set to compete for the crown of best dressed window as part of the town’s annual festival.

Judges, including a representative from the John Lewis Partnership, will decide which business has best incorporated the festival’s royal theme of kings and queens.

The competition will run from June 10-18, with the winning business receiving £100 from Sodbury Chamber of Commerce to donate to the charity of its choice.

Trophies will also be presented to those judged as the top three entries.

Yate International Academy on the up From Page 1 requiring improvement - one of a number of problems faced by the federation that runs the academy during 2015.

But Adam Williams, who was appointed as chief executive principal of the Ridings’ Federation of Academies earlier this year to get it out of its “troubled times”, said the “really important” monitoring visit showed improvements were being made.

The visiting team spoke with teachers, students and senior managers to assess progress made since the Ofsted inspection.

Mr Williams said: “We were given really great feedback, told we were working on everything we should be and that improvements were evident.

“We are really pleased with how it is going. We are on the road to really getting this academy up towards good - and beyond to outstanding.”

He said he was now waiting to receive a report from the team

outlining their findings.

The regional schools commissioner in the South West is responsible for making decisions about academies and works with the national schools commissioner and school leaders to take action in underperforming schools.

As well as the Yate academy receiving a poor Ofsted assessment, its sister Winterbourne International Academy was also rated at the same level.

Other problems for the Ridings’ Federation last year included teachers at the Winterbourne campus taking strike action and criticism being aimed at the former chief executive principal, Beverley Martin, over her leadership style.

She left in October after only about seven months in the job.

Mr Williams was appointed as her replacement, having led the John Cabot Academy in Kingswood to the highest Ofsted ranking and then getting a school in Bath out of special measures.

Building up buttercups on special site near Sodbury A RARE buttercup found in only two places in the UK - including a site near Chipping Sodbury - is to be nurtured by conservationists.

They have launched a project to protect the adder’s tongue spearwort, which grows on Inglestone Common.

The scheme, led by the South Gloucestershire Biodiversity Action Group, has received funding from Wessex Water to help protect and care for the plant and its environment.

It is planned to use the £2,500 grant to develop a method for reintroducing the plant, which could help also conservationists support the rare species on other sites.

Robert Moreton, of the action group, said: “The money will help fund the planting of the adder’s tongue spearwort and then monitor and document seed which has set.”

As a mud plant, the species of buttercup relies on areas of bare, wet ground to set seed and thrive.

For many years, cattle turned out onto the common kept the wildflower grasslands open and ponds grazed, allowing the plant to thrive in the wet, muddy edges.

In recent years, land management practices have changed and scrub has encroached around ponds, while cattle numbers have dropped. This has been mirrored by a reduction in plant numbers to a critical point.

Regulatory scientist Dave Jones, said: “The project will really help turn around the fortunes of the buttercup by researching and understanding the plant’s requirements and by removing scrub so new areas can be recreated where the plant can flourish.”

HOBBS House in Chipping Sodbury has re-opened after a refurbishment led to the High Street bakery being closed for a short time.

A cafe in the premises has been removed, leaving the shop to concentrate on handmade produce.

Spokeswoman Jo Cox said: “We have served the town for more than 30 years and constantly strive to offer our customers our best.”

The Bristol Sevens Bike Club is organising the day on 2 July in memory of Jordan Thorn.

SIX girls from Chipping Sodbury School won an award for innovation after taking part in a scheme aimed at getting more youngsters into engineering careers.

The pupils from year eight enrolled on the 12-week Industrial Cadets programme, which works with UK engineering companies such as Airbus at Filton.

Charlotte Mitchell, Ellie Gendall, Chloe Tomkins, Mischa Marrret, Ella Slinn and Alisha Stokes had to design an ecofriendly building that could be linked to their school.

It involved designing the structure, building a model, writing a report and creating a presentation board. Adrian Mitchell and Andrew Dibble, two mentors from Airbus, also visited the school every week to give guidance to the students.

On completion of the project,

The Year 8 team receiving their prize the girls attended a celebration event at the Airbus site with pupils from 12 other schools to present their work.

Judges assessed the entries in four categories, with Chipping Sodbury taking the honours in

the section for innovation.

Team member Charlotte said: “We put in a lot of effort and hard work over the 12 weeks and were thrilled to be awarded the trophy.”

Yate ATM blast store re-opens A YATE store which had its cash machine blown up by thieves has re-opened.

But there is currently no working ATM machine at the Tesco Express convenience store in Station Road as a result of the blast.

Police are still investigating the attack, which caused significant damage to the store in the incident on May 11.

The explosion happened just before 3.30am, waking nearby householders. It led to the road being closed for a number of hours as crime scene investigators examined the scene and structural engineers made the building safe.

The attack happened just days after two cash machines were attacked in Winterbourne.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Iddon of Avon and Somerset Police said: “This was an extremely dangerous and reckless act which put lives at risk and we are treating it with the utmost seriousness.

“The success rate for these attacks is actually very low, with little or no money stolen.

“We are committed to apprehending those involved in ATM attacks and have a significant arrest record relating to this type of offence. In recent months we have also seen a number of people jailed for attacks of this kind.”

Grants on offer from Yate council

TWO types of grant are being offered to people and organisations in Yate by the town council.

The Wills Davis Atwell Charity awards grants to those aged 16-21 who live within the town and need help with the cost of attending college or university or starting an apprenticeship.

Grants awarded can be put towards course fees or used to buy materials, books or equipment, with applications to be received by September 30.

Meanwhile, anyone running a not-for-profit organisation that needs financial help should also apply for a grant by June 24 if they work for the benefit of Yate parishioners and offer a range of services and activities.

Groups that have benefited previously include Friends of Kingsgate Park, Ridgewood PreSchool and Abbotswood Action.

Band’s concert provides entertainment for Rotary Club’s guests

Skin problems and allergies

S

KIN problems are one of the most common reasons pets are taken to the vets, they make up about 30% of initial consultations. Common symptoms are itching, hair loss, reddening of the skin, and scabs.

Parasites such as fleas or mites, or bacterial infections can be responsible for these signs but more often than not there is an underlying allergic cause.

Skin problems are the most common presentation of allergy in cats and dogs- Where humans will react to hay fever with itchy eyes and a streaming nose, a dog will often react to grass allergies with irritated skin.

Allergies in animals are grouped into three main categories: allergies to parasites, environmental allergies and food allergies.

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what the pet is allergic to because outwardly they look very similar. We can get some clues from the history; when the signs started and how they progress, did they seem to be related to any change the owner can think of?

For instance do the signs

follow a seasonal pattern?

Allergies to grasses or pollens are usually worse in spring and summer, whereas allergies to dust or storage mites are usually worse in the winter.

Food allergies can develop at any age and often (though not always) present after a change in diet. Pets can be allergic to the protein or carbohydrate source in their food and often don’t show any gastrointestinal signs, only skin irritation.

Once we have ruled out parasites as a cause of skin disease and treated any bacterial or yeast infection we can investigate whether there is an underlying allergy. Investigation can include bloods testing or diet trials.

Treatment options depend on the type of allergy and include diet management, desensitisation vaccines and symptomatic treatment.

A TEAM of students from Chipping Sodbury School has completed the tough Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor.

All but one of the six-strong group reached the finishing line after covering 35 miles during the two-day expedition.

The event tests self sufficiency and determination, with the year ten pupils among 400 teams taking part.

The exercise involved a total of 2,400 young people, with the Chipping Sodbury contingent consisting of Harry Braithwaite, Rob Bennett, Emma Doody, Lewis Roberts, Arno Turner and Ashley Whitlock . Lisa Jarvis, their team manager, said: “All the students are to be congratulated on the effort and hard work they showed during the event.

“It is an enormous achievement to finish the Ten Tors and they will look back on it with great pride, once all the aches and pains have disappeared.”

Stamp of approval approaches for post office re-opening in North Road PUBLICANS Jenna Hale and Paul Jefferies will switch between pulling pints and selling stamps when a post office reopens in North Road, Yate.

A consultation exercise is currently running over plans to operate the service within a new convenience store behind the Codrington Arms.

As long as there are no delays, it is hoped to have the enterprise up and running this summer.

Meanwhile, Chipping Sodbury’s post office is also planned to move from Horse Street to High Street, with a promise of significantly longer hours.

North Road used to have a post office until it closed a year ago when the postmaster resigned and the premises could

no longer be used for postal services.

Jenna, who took over the running of the Codrington Arms with Paul in 2014, said they were approached by Post Office Ltd about accommodating the post office on the pub site, leading to the start of a long process to allow that to happen.

Consultation with local users runs until June 8 but it is anticipated there will be support for the move.

Jenna said: “We were asked if we would like to apply and that application process took about six months. We’re now nearing the end of the whole process and hope to have the post office open at the end of July in a building behind the pub.”

She said the new venture

would fit in well with the pub due to the opening times proposed for the shop, which is set to operate every day, including Sunday mornings.

Simon Drinkwater, area manager for Post Office Ltd, said: “A new operator has been appointed, providing us with the opportunity to incorporate post office services very close to the previously closed branch.”

Consultation on relocating Chipping Sodbury post office into Cotswold Vintners will run until July 8, when a final decision will be taken on the scheme.

Men due in court after family attacked

TWO men from Chipping Sodbury are about to appear in court in connection with an incident in which a family were assaulted on their way home from a New Year’s party in Yate.

Adam Pisarski, 22, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, two counts of causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and one count of assault.

Daniel Pisarski, 21, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of causing actual bodily harm.

Both men are jointly charged with the GBH with intent offence and one of the ABH offences.

The charges relate to an incident in Scott Way in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The men are due to appear at North Avon Magistrates Court in the town on June 7.

Man ordered to repay thousands of pounds after admitting counterfeiting crimes A MAN living near Chipping Sodbury was ordered to pay back nearly £25,000 after selling hundreds of fake goods online.

Andrew Minter, 55, of High Street, Wickwar, sold more than 1,600 counterfeit T-shirts featuring bands such as Motorhead, the Ramones and Blur.

He admitted two counterfeiting charges and was ordered by a judge at Bristol Crown Court to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

He also received a three-month curfew order, was ordered to pay full prosecution costs of more than £6,299 and told to repay the benefit made from the crime of more than £24,729.

Minter was told the amount had to be paid within three months or he would face a nine-month term of imprisonment.

Minter’s activities came to light after a brand investigator discovered him trading on an online auction site.

The investigation was taken over by South Gloucestershire Council’s trading standards officers after several test purchases were made.

A warrant was executed at his home and his business premises on Gloucester Road, Bristol, which resulted in a quantity of business documentation and counterfeit clothing being seized.

It was discovered that Minter had been selling counterfeit clothing online for about four years in the UK and worldwide, selling 1,608 copied T-shirts and earning £17,000.

When interviewed, Minter claimed he had bought the T-shirts from an unidentified man and always paid him in cash.

Neil Derrick, of the trading standards department, welcomed the sentence.

Yate council’s work recognised by national organisation

Yate town councillors and clerk Hayley Townsend GOOD practice by Yate Town Council has led to it being recognised with a national accolade.

It was named council of the week by the National Association of Local Councils (NALC), which highlights the achievements of town and parish councils in England which belong to the organisation.

The council’s geographical area of responsibility includes more than 22,000 residents, who are represented by 17 elected councillors.

Its entry for the award focused on its progressive outlook and the way it led the development of local projects and organised numerous community events.

Its recent takeover of the Yate Outdoor Sports Complex site and the purchase of land at Abbotswood Shopping Centre were given as examples of investment in improving the local environment.

Final call to get registered and have a say in EU vote ELECTORAL officers in South Gloucestershire are urging people to make sure they have a vote in the European Union referendum.

Anyone currently not on the electoral register has only until Tuesday, June 7, to ensure they can have a say on Britain’s future.

of the EU takes place on Thursday, June 23, and an information booklet from the Electoral Commission is currently being put through letterboxes to give further details on the referendum, the voting registration process and the voting method.

encourage everyone in South Gloucestershire to act now if they’re not already registered to vote. It’s easy to register and only takes a few minutes online.”

Thousands of comments made on council’s proposed library cuts MORE than 3,000 comments on planned library cuts, which could see Chipping Sodbury’s service axed, were made during a first round of consultation.

South Gloucestershire Council is looking to save £650,000 from its library budget but users are fighting to protect those libraries which could be hit.

Chipping Sodbury’s library is under threat and a campaign is running to keep it open and prevent users having to go to Yate instead. The mobile library is also at risk of being taken off the road.

Ahead of future debates on the service, a consultation exercise was carried out on potential changes.

The council said it resulted in more than 3,000 feedback forms being returned, with drop-in

sessions for the public also held and meetings conducted with town and parish councils and other interested groups.

It said the volume of feedback would take time to analyse but the findings would be presented to councillors before they made a decision on the next stage of the review in September.

The council had indicated it was interested in possible community involvement in running libraries and said it would now explore new ideas put forward during the consultation.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the communities committee, said: although money had to be saved, the main objective was to provide “the best possible service that is sustainable for the future”.

Yate school’s deputy to leave for new head teacher role

of feeling and the range of individuals who use our libraries, as well as revealing a number of new ideas and innovative models of providing services in the future.

“Council officers will now take time to talk to the various groups, including the town and parish councils and community organisations who expressed an interest in working together, to explore new options for each of our libraries.”

Further consultation will be carried out later on updated plans for each library.

Councillors will also be briefed in September on potential community hubs to incorporate multiple services, which could include libraries.

Yate is one of the areas prioritised for such a system.

BRIMSHAM Green School in Yate will lose its deputy head when Jon Bell takes up the top job at an academy in Gloucestershire.

Mr Bell, 41, has been appointed head teacher at Sir William Romney’s School in Tetbury, where he is due to pick up the reins in September.

Married with two young sons, Mr Bell started his career in the West Midlands, teaching history at schools in Solihull before moving to Brimsham Green as deputy head in 2011.

He has a special interest in developing positive attitudes to learning in order to maximise students’ achievement.

He said: “I believe that, with a positive mindset, every child can achieve more than even they believe is possible.”

New president for Rotary Club CHIPPING Sodbury Rotary Club is about to elect its next president, with Ian Lowe taking on the yearlong role at a landmark time for the organisation.

The club will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2017, an event that coincides with the centenary of the formation of the Rotary Foundation.

Here, Mr Lowe explains how Rotary operates and outlines the work it does to support local and international projects.

Beer and music festival ‘ale and hearty’ after 21 years THE South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival will come of age when it opens in Chipping Sodbury, 21 years after being launched.

Hundreds of real ale enthusiasts are expected to visit the two-day event when it takes place at the town’s rugby club on July 8 and 9.

Organised by Yate and District Rotary Club, the festival continues to be one of its most popular fund raisers, with a large variety of beers on offer, as well as cider, perry and wine. Soft drinks and food will also be available.

This year, festival-goers will also enjoy live music from a total of seven bands - two performing on the Friday evening and five playing throughout the Saturday, with acoustic, rock, ska and sea shanties in the mix.

Billed as one of the biggest beer festivals in the area, profits from the weekend will go to a range of local, national and international charities supported by the Rotarians.

Club spokesman David Picton said more than £220,000 had been raised by the festival during the past two decades and tickets now being sold for the 2016 event are set to boost that amount considerably.

They can be bought online at www. yaterotaryclub.co.uk or in person from Chipping Sodbury’s tourist information centre or Meredith’s

ironmongery store in Yate Shopping Centre.

They cost £8 for the Friday session and £14 for the Saturday, with each ticket holder receiving either a beer mug or wine glass to take home as a memento.

Mr Picton said the festival would open at 6pm on July 8, with music starting 30 minutes later courtesy of Bristol-based band Tijuana Bible.

The four-piece band The Tubby Bluesters will make a return visit to the festival later in the evening.

Saturday’s music will be provided by Leon Daye, the Ray Jones Band, the Frampton Shantymen, GPS and, to bring the festival to a close, the Great eSKApe.

New council role for former Yate mayor

YATE councillor Ian Blair has been elected as vice-chairman of South Gloucestershire Council.

Mr Blair, a Liberal Democrat who is also a member of Yate Town Council and a former town mayor, was sworn into his role during an official ceremony at Kingswood Civic Centre.

Erica Williams, who represents Bitton for the Conservatives on the unitary authority, was chosen to continue in her role as chairwoman after completing her first term of office.

She said during the coming year, she would carry on fundraising for her chosen charities, which include Avon Valley Railway in Bitton and the Wild Place Project - part of Bristol Zoo - at Cribbs Causeway.

OOR step scammers and criminals are being talked about more and more so this month I feel that I should talk about what you need to be aware of.

It certainly is not something which you need to be nervous about as in Chipping Sodbury and surrounding villages there have limited incidents. However it is something everyone needs to be aware of and ensure that if anybody does try their luck, we as a community stop or prevent any criminal offences from happening.

Police call these door to door persons ‘rogue Traders’, and they can have varying goals with knocking on your door. Our two main concerns are: • Persons trying to sell you goods or services who are not licensed to do so or if they are they are trying to sell them at extortionate prices. Do not feel pressured into buying anything and always allow yourself time to contact a family member or friend before committing to any service. A genuine tradesman will always accept this.

• Persons who are impersonating a tradesman’s with the sole intention of distracting you for them or another to steal items from within your house. This is what we call a distraction burglary.

I have three bits of advice: 1.If in doubt keep them out It sounds simple, but if you

don’t let someone in - they will go away. Don’t let them pressure you into opening the door. Also be aware if you have your back door open, ensure you can see it or just lock it.

2. Be prepared: Be in control Think about what to say to cold callers in advance.

And keep a list of key contact numbers near your phone so you can check out legitimate callers.

Ask all other unwanted callers to go away.

3. Call a neighbour or the police Contact a local relative or nominated neighbour who can help verify a cold caller. If you think someone is a rogue trader call us on 101. To report a distraction burglar or rogue trader who has taken your money and is still in the area call 999.

need to come into your house and if they do then arrange an appointment so they come back at a time when you can have a friend or relative at home with you.

Be alert but not alarmed. Do not let it affect your everyday life or worry about it but just take that extra bit of care when somebody is at your door. And if you have a vulnerable neighbour then please keep an eye out for them.

BMX rider brings show to Yate infant school THEY may ride to school, but it’s probably fair to say the children of Broadway Infants School don’t try the tricks that Matti Hemmings can pull off.

Matti, one of the world’s best BMX flatland riders gave an exhibition to the children in their playground, not only showing off tricks, but giving a talk on bike safety.

BROADWAY Infant School in Yate is celebrating after raising over £7,000 to install an outdoor classroom for the children to enjoy.

The Friends of Broadway raised the money from fundraising events including their Christmas fare, film night, a Mad Hatters tea party, Bingo, and race nights.

The majority of the money raised went to buy the outdoor classroom. However, class teachers were also able to buy specific resources for their own classroom.

Head Teacher Juliet Lambert said: “The new outdoor classroom will mean that Year 1 and 2 children can be taught outside all year around enabling us to offer exciting alternative learning experiences”.

UNE has a lot of special memories for me. One June, a good number of years ago, I received a message from the Queen, at least I assumed it was from her because it had ‘On Her Majesty’s Service’ boldly printed on the envelope. In actual fact it was an invitation for me to join Her Majesty’s Army for two years starting at Catterick Camp, Yorkshire for my National Service.

This was to be an experience ‘extraordinaire’ but one which was genuinely character building.

few weeks in Antwerp, Belgium followed by 15 months in the Hook if Holland.

Those well known words ‘I will never leave you or forsake you’ resonate regularly in my heart and mind and the attitude of the One who gives them to us, namely God.

One of its big plusses was learning to live alongside other people in a wide variety of situations and recognise their aspirations, dreams and uncertainties. Drawing back sometimes so that they could hold centre-stage, encouraging others when they needed it most and seeking to be a reliable, trustworthy and on going friend and colleague.

There seems to be an inbuilt side to all of us which seeks to put ourselves first, second or even third as well. Of course it is right to seek our way forward and reach our potential. However, I have found that a way forward that can take in the hopes and needs of others as well, is an outlook well worth pursuing.

Leaving what we know as home is never easy, my journey to Catterick Yorkshire in June 1955 meant travelling on a steam pulled train from Temple Meads via the lovely Yate station as it was then. I well remember the tears rolling down my face as I passed dozens of familiar buildings and pleasure spots.

Why? Because in and around those roads and fields were people who I would miss more than anything else.

Give thanks for June 2016 and be sure to remember you need never be alone. Try to make sure to that others you know are not alone either.

It is time to invest in our infrastructure and open the ‘Road to Nowhere’

T

HE ‘Road to Nowhere’ in Yate is often said to have become a symbol of a lack of investment in Yate.

The stretch of dual carriageway sits unfinished and is not currently open to vehicles after being abandoned in the 1970s. The land where the partially completed road sits was originally bought with an intention to link South Yate with Station Road using a dual carriageway which would have seen a direct route connecting the Rodford Way roundabout with the existing Badminton Road junction, opposite the Council Offices.

Since the road was abandoned in the 1970’s, the population of Yate has trebled, thousands of houses have been built in Yate and traffic growth locally is much higher than the national average, but we have seen no major progress on our infrastructure. The ‘Road no Nowhere’ remains closed, a permanent reminder of how much we have lost out in investment to other areas in the South West. We have missed out on investment to cities like Bristol for too long, so I am pushing hard to ensure we

receive our fair share so we are able to realise every last bit of potential in our area.

The abandoned ‘Road to Nowhere’, has been said to epitomise the feeling that we are often overlooked. We should turn that feeling into one of hope for the future of our local area, finally opening the road would help to unlock the flow of traffic in Yate, helping to tackle growing congestion, and provide the chance to complete a missing arterial link in Yate’s infrastructure.

I have been raising this issue directly with the Council, Network Rail and Government Ministers, and I am delighted that the Leader of South Gloucestershire Council has now joined me in calling for the road to be completed. After receiving £500,000 to complete the full feasibility study into building junction 18A onto the M4, we have reasons to be hopeful.

As a growing place to live, work and raise a family, we need our infrastructure to match our ambition, and as the local MP, I will be doing everything possible to deliver that.

If you are generally quite stiff and inflexible, a warm up may help avoid injuries caused by overzealous digging.

A warm-up and cool-down period can be as helpful in gardening as it is for any other physical activity. Go for a power walk before you begin as this will help you warm up and minimise potential muscle aches and pains.

It is important to be aware of your body technique, body form and correct posture when gardening. It sounds like a cliché, but “bend the knees” really is the best method.

Kneel, don’t bend from the waist, and alternate your stance

and movements as often as possible to keep the muscles and body balanced. Don’t set yourself an unachievable task. It might be satisfying to do everything in one

day, but your back may not thank you for it!

Most importantly listen to your body. If you feel you need a break, take a short rest and go

back to the task later in the day. It’s probably time for a brew anyway!

If you already feel muscle aches and pains, there are ways to alleviate the discomfort. A warm bath will relieve tired muscles, but if problems persist, apply a cold pack and hot pack alternately to the area of pain, each for 10 minutes or so.

The best way to fight the pain, stress and missed work that accompany a back problem is to prevent it happening in the first place.

South Glos Show brewing up a storm VISITORS to the South Gloucestershire Show this summer will have the chance to decide which is the area’s best beer.

The annual event, which runs on 6 and 7 August at a site in Henfield, is holding its first beer competition. Five breweries that are based in South Gloucestershire are going head to head to see which brew comes out on top.

Great Western Brewery, Cotswolds Spring Brewery, Bath Ales, Severn Vale and Wickwar Brewery have all entered a pale ale and a bitter into the competition, which was launched by the Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall. The beers will be available at the show as well as at local pubs.

Ballot forms will be available to pick up at pubs and the ballot box will be in the Beer Festival area at the Show.

South Glos Show supports new charity THIS year’s South Glos Show is to help raise funds for the Meningitis Now charity.

The Gloucestershire based charity replaces the Great Western Air Ambulance as the nominated charity for the event, which last year attracted over 24,000 visitors. The Show returns to the Westerleigh Showground over the weekend of 6 and 7 August.

Meningitis Now, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, will have an awareness stand at the show and interactive attractions for the public to donate to the charity.

Liz Brown, the Chief Executive of Meningitis Now, said: “Events like this, as well as being wonderful fundraising opportunities, are also valuable ways to spread awareness about the disease and make sure people know the signs and symptoms and how to look out for themselves and their loved ones.”

The show’s headline this year, The Knights of the Damned, will be staging a Joust in the main arena, and 2016 sees the return of motorbike stunt man, Flyin’ Ryan. Other attractions include a music festival, motor show, country fair and a BMX stunt arena.

Smoked Salmon Timbales

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

EOPLE often ask me for my favourite starter recipe which is easy to make, yet looks impressive. Well, these little salmon parcels tick all those boxes. They can be made on the day you need them, 24 hours in advance or even frozen for hassle-free entertaining. And smoked salmon is an oily fish so contains Omega 3 which is so good for us. So this recipe answers my mantra of fast, fresh and healthy.

I hear the Queen is fond of smoked salmon, so at this time of celebration for her 90th why not give this recipe a whirl and dine like royalty.

These succulent salmon parcels make an impressive dinner party starter, but are easier to make than they look and can be made 24 hours in advance or frozen for hassle-free entertaining.

Serves 6 Ingredients: Smoked Salmon – 300g Raw peeled tiger prawns - 250g Juice and finely grated zest – 1 lemon Dill- either a good sprinkling of dried or a heaped tsp of finely chopped fresh dill- optional Generous pinch of cayenne pepper Quark or low-fat cream cheese – 85g Crème fraiche(low fat one is fine, but it’s your choice) – 100g For salad garnish: Baby tomatoes- different colours if poss, 18, halved juice of ½ a lemon, Olive or rapeseed oil- 2 tbsps Freshly snipped chives or dill – 1 tbsp Small bunch of watercress or assorted salad leaves You will need 6 small ramekins Here’s what you do: 1.First cook the raw prawns - tip the prawns into a saucepan (large enough to take the prawns in a single layer so they cook evenly.)

2.Add the lemon juice and dill and heat gently for a few mins shaking the pan until the prawns turn from pale grey to pink. (Try not to overcook them as they will become rubbery.)

3.Take them off the heat as soon as they are all pink. Leave to cool.

4.Now prep the ramekins. Line each one with cling film, leaving an extra 2 inches hanging over

the edges of the ramekins.

5.Then line the ramekins with the salmon, allowing it to overlap the top of the dishes.

6.Now prep the prawn filling.

Carefully remove the prawns from the saucepan with a slotted spoon and put to one side.

7.Making sure you keep your eye on the saucepan, otherwise you could end up with a burnt offering! boil the liquid that is left in the pan until it has reduced by half. (You should be left with about 2 tablespoons of liquid.)

Leave it to cool.

8.Roughly chop some of the cooked prawns (about a third of them.) Set aside.

9.Tip the remainder of the prawns with the reduced liquid into a food processor with half the lemon zest, cayenne pepper and Quark.

Then blend the mixture to a puree.

(Don’t overblend, we still want some texture.)

10.Fold in the crème fraiche, chopped prawns then spoon into the smoked salmon- lined ramekins.

11.Fold the overlapping edges of smoked salmon over the prawn mixture so as to encase it.

12.Then fold the overhanging cling film over the smoked salmon.

Press flat with the palm of your hand.

13.Chill the timbales until firm. (At least 3 hours, better still make in the morning for that night. Can be made up to 24 hours ahead.)

14.When ready to serve, fold back the cling film back and use it to lift the timbale from the ramekin.

15.Prep the individual plates with a small pile of the salad garnish.

16.For the garnish: halve the tomatoes. Mix with the lemon

juice, olive/rapeseed oil and chives or dill. Season and toss with watercress or salad leaves.

17.Turn each timbale onto a serving plate (on top of the salad) and peel off all of the cling film.

18.Decorate the top of the timbale with crossed chives and a little of the lemon zest.

Cook’s Tips To Freeze: Wrap each ramekin in foil and place in the freezer.

Once they have frozen you can remove them from the ramekin, still in the cling film and overwrap with foil.

Store for up to a month in the freezer.

To Serve: Thaw overnight in the fridge.

You can of course use jumbo cooked prawns, but they will not have the same flavour or texture.

250g of crabmeat could be used instead of prawns for a change.

Just add with the crème fraiche in point 10.

Patients welcome pilot minor injuries scheme at GP surgeries A YATE GP practice said a minor injuries pilot scheme recently launched in South Gloucestershire had been well received by patients.

The two-year project involves surgeries dealing with minor injuries, with practice-based nurses being supported by family doctors.

Minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries, sprains, cuts and bites are among the injuries that can be treated.

The service complements the Yate Minor Injuries Unit, which local councillors are concerned to protect, and eases pressure on hospital accident and emergency departments.

It allows patients to see a nurse in the GP surgery where they are registered on the same day instead of waiting for treatment at a minor injury unit (MIU) or hospital

A&E department. South Gloucestershire is thought to be the only area in the country in which every patient with a minor injury can be dealt with straight away by GP practice staff during surgeries’ normal opening hours.

All 25 GP practices in the district are taking part in the pilot, which only started in April and will be monitored and evaluated during the time it runs.

Dr Nick Mansfield, of the Wellington Road Family Practice in Yate, said: “We’ve had ten people use the new service so far and the feedback we have had is that it is an efficient and excellent service.”

South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has funded the scheme, with the first return of statistics due after three months.

But Dr Ann Sephton, deputy clinical chairwoman at the CCG,

said initial feedback had been positive.

She said: “We’re so pleased that this has been a successful start to our minor injury service, which we believe is unique in England and may be copied in many other areas.

“The practices, their nurses and our CCG have combined to launch a scheme which has been really appreciated by the patients who have used it so far.

“We still have a long way to go before the end of this pilot so we will be interested to see what demand there is during the school holidays and other peak times, as well as the impact this additional service has on our MIUs and emergency departments.”

If an injury requires other treatment, patients can be referred to a GP, emergency department, MIU or X-ray unit.





Action day cleans up in Yate and Sodbury

AN ‘Action on Litter’ day held at Peg Hill, Yate and Chipping Sodbury Common has seen the area cleaned up after twenty volunteers from the community, alongside local McDonald’s employees, joined the event organised by local MP Luke Hall.

The litter pick saw the team collect over 15 sacks of rubbish from the area which was then handed over South Glos Council for disposal.

The day was organised after Luke Hall MP received information from residents who had highlighted a build-up of rubbish around the Peg Hill and the local skate park area.

Mr Hall also enlisted the help of volunteers and over 15 McDonald’s employees.

He said; “I would to extend a big thank you to Yate McDonalds, their employees and volunteers for turning out to tackle the litter problem at the two areas.

A great effort was put in and lots of rubbish collected. After seeing Thornbury Litterbusters

make such a difference, I was pleased to see this work in Yate too”.

Mike Guerin, McDonald’s franchisee and owner of the Yate restaurant said: “It was great to see such a big group of

volunteers come together to help tackle litter in The Skate Park area and on The Common in Chipping Sodbury.

I’d like to thank local MP Luke Hall and his team for all their hard work and for giving up

their time to come along.”

Local stars to sparkle at Music in the Meadows HOME grown talent is set to star at this year’s Iron Acton Music in the Meadow On Friday 1 July, Mash in the Meadows has four outstanding local bands including Mad Apple Circus. Several members went to Iron Acton Primary School.

They have since spread their wings and last year completed a successful European Tour as well as playing at Glastonbury.

Mad Apple Circus is an original blend of horn-fuelled styles, built on Ska/Hip-Hop/ Jazz and Latin grooves. They have fast become festival favourites and a popular choice among promoters in the UK and Europe and have shared stages with bands including UB40. Coalpit Heath firm making a mark at Euro 2016 A COMPANY that’s based in Coalpit Heath is playing a crucial role in the Euro 2016 football championships.

Pitchmark, who specialise in providing white line marking paint and equipment, have been chosen to supply their products for the event in France.

Pitchmark was set up in 2010 by Mark Rodman from Mangotsfield, Bristol, a groundsman and horticultural engineer for 30 years including a stint as head groundsman at Cleve RFC for 16 years.

Pitchmark has previously supplied the Confederations Cup 2013 and Brazil World Cup 2014, and currently distribute in over 20 countries worldwide.

Pitchmark were approached in April regarding EURO 2016, and Mark flew out to help train staff at the Stade Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux, as well as the Stade Velodrome in Marseille.

Work starts on final shops at Yate Riverside THE final stages of the Yate Riverside development are nearing completion, with work starting on preparing the TK Maxx store and the latest restaurant opening to customers.

Two ground floor units and one at first floor level are being merged into one for TK Maxx, with the work expected to be finished by late July.

Fitting out will follow, with the store - the last of the retail lineup at the site - due to open in October.

Meanwhile, the 60s American-themed Dean’s Diner was due to open as Yate and Sodbury Voice went to press.

Yate Riverside is an extension to the main Yate Shopping Centre and features a range of restaurants and shops, including Next and Pets at Home, all anchored by the recently opened Cineworld six-screen cinema.

Centre manager Andy Lowrey said: “This development has been a long time in the making but now Yate has its own evening leisure venue.

“There are still a couple of holes to fill, such as the coffee pod and occupancy of an upper floor unit, but these are progressing.

“Similarly, there is activity on some of the vacant units in the main centre. But these things all take time and hopefully we will be able to release news about more occupiers in the very near future.”

Chipping Sodbury rocks for children’s hospice A CHIPPING Sodbury pub is planning a day of music to raise money for the Childrens Hospice South West.

The George Hotel in Broad Street is holding the charity day on 12 June, starting at 2.30pm.

Music will be from local bands including, Crossfire, Liquor and Poker, One To Many, Jimmy Lees Ragged Company, Steve Fred and Tony, Angel Heart and Alan Davies.

View from Yate Heritage Centre WE are pleased to be supporting the forthcoming Victoria County History (VCH) of the three Sodburys. This will be a detailed and thorough history of Chipping Sodbury, Old Sodbury and Little Sodbury and comes after a similar project in Yate last year, bringing great benefit to historians.

The new Sodbury project is already generating much newly uncovered history on the three Sodbury areas and we can now reveal some of the quirks of history uncovered so far.

Old Sodbury Clergy St John’s in Old Sodbury is the oldest church in the Sodburys, dating to 1215-1225. It also attracted vicars of some social standing in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The living was briefly held in 1768-69 by William Harley, a son of the Earl of Oxford and Mortimer and a descendant of Robert Harley - chief minister under Queen Anne in 1710-14 and sometimes

referred to as “prime minister”.

The family is also credited with the development of Harley Street in London. How much Old Sodbury saw of William Harley is debatable as he held four other livings, one as far north as York, and he died within a year of his appointment.

In 1833 the living went to Thomas Blofeld, a surname synonymous with cricket and James Bond. Cricket commentator Henry Blofeld is from the same family and it is thought Bond creator Ian Fleming chose the name for his villain because he was at Eton with Henry Blofeld’s father. In 1837 Thomas Blofeld left Old Sodbury and returned to the family seat in Hoveton, Norfolk, as its vicar.

From Old to Little Sodbury Anyone walking from St John’s to St Adeline’s in Little Sodbury will follow what is known as the Coffin Trail. Before the present St Adeline’s was built in 1859, an

original chapel was on land too rocky for burials so bodies would have been carried for burial in Old Sodbury.

St Adeline’s is the only parish church bearing the name in the country but the source of the name remains a mystery.

Sunny outlook for pupils in weather pic competition

Jacqui to mark the Bard’s anniversary by re-visiting her dad’s album JAZZ singer Jacqui Dankworth will make a return visit to Chipping Sodbury nearly four years to the day since her last highly acclaimed concert in the town.

The vocalist is marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare with a tour that takes in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Friday, September 30.

It will feature material composed by her father, the late Sir John Dankworth, for his 1964 album Shakespeare and all That Jazz written for Jacqui’s mother Dame Cleo Laine.

Jacqui said: “On this very important anniversary, I thought it would be complete madness not to bring back to life the much loved music made during my parents’ long recording careers.”

She will be joined in the concert by singer-songwriter and keyboard player Charlie Wood and friends.

FIVE year-old Maximus McMurray, a Year 1 pupil at Old Sodbury Church of England Primary School, and Jai Huntly, a Reception pupil from Iron Acton Church of England Primary School, have stormed through the South West regional heat of a national art competition to win top prizes for their schools.

The children and their classmates were invited to enter the ‘Whatever the Weather’ competition, run by Yate based company JDP, as part of its schools engagement programme. Every year over 1,000 pupils take part.

They were tasked with creating a weather scene for any season.

JDP is featuring the twelve most eye-catching designs from across the country in its customer calendar being produced later this year.

Jenny Wass, JDP’s Customer Experience Manager, said: “We really wanted the children to use what they see out of the window, as well as their imagination, to get as creative as possible, and the range of entries we’ve had certainly shows that. The judges thought though that Maximus and Jai’s designs stood out and their high quality will look great in this year’s calendar.”

Maximus’ autumnal weather collage was selected as the winner of the South West heat of the competition and he receives £500 towards an environmental project within school. Jai’s glittery design was third and he was rewarded with a £100 prize for his school.

All three children were also presented with a £20 high street gift voucher.

Maximus’ teacher at Old Sodbury Primary School, Sarah Hancock, said: “JDP’s competition has been a great, fun way of reinforcing the curriculum’s ‘World around us’ topic, which weather plays a big part of. We use literacy, music, science and ICT to do this but art is a big focus to bring the topic to life and helps the children add in their own daily experiences.”

Michael and Sam make history at memorable Badminton Horse Trials HISTORY was made at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials when Michael Jung became 2016 champion - a victory that also secured the elusive £240,000 Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing.

Jung led from start to finish with La Biosthetique Sam to complete on the lowest ever score at Badminton of just 34.4 penalties.

He was also the first German to take the Badminton title in its 67-year history on only his second visit to the prestigious event.

The Jung factor had helped produce even bigger than ever crowds of spectators keen to see the sport’s world number one - the only eventer to have held Olympic (London 2012), world and European championship titles all at the same time.

They were treated to a display of horsemanship that earned Jung, 33, and 16-year-old Sam a standing ovation when the event reached its climax in the showjumping arena, having already made their mark in the dressage phase and across a tough cross-country track that had taken its toll.

Having achieved the best dressage score on day one, they kept a clean sheet during the rest of the challenge, jumping clear and within the time across country and over the showjumping fences.

After receiving the Badminton trophy from the Duchess of Cornwall and the Rolex award, Jung said: “This is a very special moment for me. My horse is amazing and very special to me. I am very proud of him.”

The Grand Slam recognises riders who win the big three international horse trials Badminton and Burghley in the UK and the USA’s Kentucky - consecutively but has only ever been won once before, by Britain’s Pippa Funnell in 2003.

Jung said after winning Burghley last autumn, despite a broken ankle, and Kentucky in the spring, the Grand Slam was in his mind but he had tried to make Badminton as “normal” a

competition as possible to avoid increased pressure.

Taking the Badminton runner-up slot was Jung’s compatriot Andreas Osholt on So Is Et, with Britain’s Gemma Tattersall third on Arctic Soul.

New Zealanders filled the next three places - Mark Todd on Leonidas II, Clarke Johnstone on Balmoral Sensation and Jock Paget on Clifton Lush - with GB’s Kristina Cook seventh on Star Witness and Izzy Taylor eighth

on Allercombe Ellie. Zara Tindall earned a qualification for the Rio Olympics by completing with High Kingdom.

But there were a number of cross-country falls, including one for Bristol’s Dani Evans from Raphael II and Emily King (daughter of Team GB veteran Mary) with Brookleigh. Evans did finish on her second horse, Smart Time.

Eric takes over Badminton course building reins as Giuseppe bids farewell NEXT year’s Badminton will have another new cross-country course designer after the surprise announcement that Giuseppe Della Chiesa is standing down after just three years.

The job of creating the best known track in eventing has gone to Eric Winter, who lived in Yatton, near Bristol, before taking on Severnvale Equestrian Centre, Chepstow, with his wife, Lizzel.

Winter, 53, has designed the

Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials course for the last ten years, as well as designing for the Asian Games and a string of European pony, junior and young rider championships.

He was technical delegate at Badminton from 2011-14 and as a rider, completed the event in 1991.

Winter said: “It is a great honour to be asked to design the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton course. “I first visited Badminton

in 1974 – that was my first ever taste of eventing. In recent years I have been involved in several different roles and have got to know the team behind the scenes very well.

“To be asked to design here is truly a dream come true and I am extremely thankful to all those involved for giving me this opportunity. I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

June, 2016 AN event that has raised tens of thousands of pounds for good causes over its three-year history is looking for entrants to help it break previous records.

Organisers of the Saddleback Sodbury Sportive are hoping to increase participation and improve on its success story.

Event organiser Bill Bennett said; “We want to make the Sodbury Sportive even better than before and to do so we need as many riders as possible to take part. If we can attract the same or more riders this year we should be on target to better the £20,658 raised in 2015’.

The Sportive offers a choice of a 30 mile, 60 and 100 mile route, catering for all levels of cycling ability.

All of the profits are donated to good causes and entrants are promised a fully supported event with technical assistance and mechanical help available and plenty of refreshment stations.

Wet weather a leveller at Castle Combe

RAIN added to the excitement at Castle Combe racetrack as it hosted the Motors TV live race day.

A dry mornings qualifying gave way to some heavy rain after lunch, leaving the drivers of some of the championships debating whether to play it safe with wet tyres or gamble on drys.

The wet conditions favoured some of the less powerful cars with Bristol’s James Keepin coming through from 11th on the grid in the Saloon Car Championship to take his first win in his Class C MG ZR. Horton’s Henry Williams finished in 5th place overall in his Morgan 4/4 in the second of the Morgan Challenge races.

He now leads Class D in the championship.

CASTLE Combe’s first showcasing of Japanese cars has been hailed a great success. The ‘Jap Day’ attracted a big turnout of Japanese car fans.

The circuit was taken over by Japanese cars from across the UK and with over 1500 club cars attending, the day featured a wide range of makes and models, from rally-inspired cars such as Evos and Imprezas, to high-revving heroes in the form of Civic Type Rs and Integra DC5s, plus Skylines, 200SXs, RX-8s, MX-5s and 350Zs. As well as the track action, there was a a hotly contested Show and Shine competition, a Top 30 Parade, and some bumper-to-bumper drift car demos.

The Best Club Award went to Club Evolution, who brought a display of Evos, from early cars right up to the latest big-power models.

Event Manager, Tom Davis said; “We were confident Jap Day would be busy but we were blown away by the support from Jap car fans. Everyone I saw had smiles on their faces and the place was packed with fantastic cars. For a first event it really couldn’t have gone better.”

Southwold Swimmers shine at South West Counties Youth Championships A SMALL group of Southwold swimmers, who are based in Yate, have held their own against performance centres such as Plymouth Leander, Millfield school, Mt Kelly, Aqua Sulis, and Bournemouth Colligates at this year’s ASA SW youth championships.

Georgie Locke (15), Emily Locke (16) Jessica Shaw (17), Maria Jones (16), Arno Turner (14), Henry Bennett (15), Ben Rawlins (15), Peter Lewis (20) all swam good PB’s in their selected events with the Clubs most improved Junior, Georgie Locke, making it through to six finals with a fabulous fourth in the 50 Breast. Other finalists were Henry Bennett, with two and Maria Jones with one.

The pick of the racing had to be the head-to-head’s between Southwold’s County champion Jessica Shaw (17) and the current National Champion Bethany Newton (17) from the Street & District Club. Both girls qualified the fastest in the 50 and 100 Backstrokes so were in pole lanes 4 & 5 for the finals.

over the first 15m, but with real grit and determination dug in to be ahead leading into the final 20m and this time held good pace and power to never look like losing either race. Afterwards Jessica said “I could see and feel

Home advantage as Sodbury get down to business CHIPPING Sodbury’s first team, captained by Jamie Rendell, have two home games in June as the league season gets into full swing. The team are competing in the Gloucestershire division of the West of England Premier League.

They have home games at the Ridings against Bourton Vale on June 4 and Tewkesbury on June 18.

Jerry Swatton is once again in charge of Sodbury second side who will play in Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League. They entertain Dumbleton on June 11 and Hatherley & Reddings on June 25. Sodbury Thirds, captained

by Steve Febry, are in Division Seven of the Bristol & District League and Sodbury 4’s, skippered by Damian Frodsham, are in Division Eleven. The fifth team are in Division 16.

Sodbury snatch title in last gasp drama CHIPPING Sodbury Town FC are celebrating after securing a second promotion in two seasons. The Toolstation Western League Div 1 title came to Sodbury after a tense last day when the team, who were in third place, put in a stellar performance and other results went their way.

After a steady start to the season, by late November Sodbury had hit top spot, and were to stay there foruntil April when injuries finally caught up with them and they dropped to 3rd.

The team were 3rd going into the last game, 3 points and 6 goals behind the leaders Wells City. By half time Wells were 1-0 down and Sodbury were 1-0 up away at Calne Town; leaving them 4 goals behind on goal difference and needing 5 to win it. With 3 formation changes Sodbury turned up the heat and were soon 5-0 up with Wells still 1-0 down with 10 mins to go.

Sodbury then scored their 6th to put them 1 goal ahead on goal difference and the away support erupted, especially as news soon filtered through the Oldland had gone 2-0 up! Sodbury had won the league on goal difference.

Unfortunately the League officials hadn’t expected the turn of events and had brought the runners up trophy and medals to the Sodbury game.

Sodbury manager Karl Reese will now lead the team into the Toolststion Premier Division,

were no longer in control of our destiny, but the other teams in contention could not capitalise.

We won the next two games which meant Wick away would be the championship game. The players looked nervous, but once we scored the first goal, we settled down and yet again played great football. We scored again mid-way through the second half to confirm winning the Senior League. This led to great celebrations after the final whistle, something that continued back at our clubhouse.

Double celebration - Managers of the first team and reserves celebrate winning their leagues mixing with teams with very big budgets. They will also be in FA competitions for the 1st time.

Karl was quick to divert praise on to his players and what they had achieved, saying “They have worked their socks off from day one. There’s a real togetherness in this group and the table doesn’t lie. They deserve all the credit in the world, I’m so proud of them all and Gary Powell my assistant coach has been a massive part of our success too”.

Karl is also in the running to be voted Toolstation manager of the year at the awards ceremony in Torquay. He has been quick to arrange pre season games for next season which includes the likes of Bath City & Yate Town visiting.

School team triumph in cup final THE Year 7 boys football team at Chipping Sodbury School is celebrating after winning the South Glos Cup Final.

They took the title after outplaying The Castle School of Thornbury to win.

Over 35 teams started in the competition back in January with the top two meeting head to head in the final at the Fry’s Sporting facility.

The 13 boy squad, captained by Harvey Greenslade and coached by sixth form students Jack Hawkins and Tom Melling were too hot to handle, running out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Chipping Sodbury dominated from the kick off probing and pushing their opponents back to create the first goal on 8 minutes.

Guy McEwan calmly slotted home a penalty to give his team a 1-0 advantage.

As the game progressed a long ball from a free kick separated the Castle back three and Harvey Greenslade scored Sodbury’s second.

Joe Stott in the Sodbury goal made a crucial save to tip the ball over the bar in what was Castle’s only real shot in anger.

Jamal Bwanamkuu struck twice in the second half to cap a classy performance by the whole team.

Sodbury Reserves go up as champions IT wasn’t just the Sodbury’s first team who were celebrating being promoted as champions. The reserve team mirrored the first’s by bagging a second promotion in a row, as Les Theobold writes.

This season was always going to be a tough one after gaining promotion to the Bristol and District League Senior Division.

As the team settled into the season we started to play with great enthusiasm and a style of football that was a credit to the club. During the season the team went on a 13 game unbeaten run which elevated us to the top of the league. The season was shaping up to be very close between the top five sides, who we still had to play. If we won five games of the last eight of the season we would be Champions.

It got off to a good start when we beat Bradley Stoke, De Veys and Patchway Town.

Then a local derby against Rangeworthy; who were bottom of the table. Two local teams trying to get the better of each other. It ended in a 1-1 draw; not a disaster as other teams around us failed to win.

Our next game was against Pucklechurch, another local team who were in mid-table with nothing to really play for, and we lost 4-2. This now meant we

Mid-table for thirds as weather takes its toll RICHARD Bisp takes us through a tricky season for Chipping Sodbury’s third team.

For the third team it’s been a hard season, having had to play half our season within a hectic last few weeks after bad weather.

Only playing two games in twelve weeks which does not help.

The players have been fantastic, playing three times a week is not easy and to finish mid table is a great result. I used in excess of forty players over the season which makes it difficult to find any kind of consistency.

Being a third team you have to bring on the youngsters and supply the teams above as well as win games.

We are getting better each season and hope to be pushing for honours soon . We have had a good core to the side with Ben Player, Mark Endicott, Luke England, Jamie Bradford, James Bisp, and captain Luke Derham being the pick of the bunch.

We have some good youngsters in Cameron Winter , Eddie Gray and Casey Brown who are all progressing well and hopefully with the under 18’s coming through, the future for the thirds looks bright for the club overall.

Under 18s THE U18’s started the season well in the Bristol Central division only losing three out of the first 9 league games.

There were no games due to the weather for two months which affected the team’s performance but they finished the season with a strong performance and finished the league a credible fourth.

Top of the table Old Sodbury boys finish in style A WIN in their final fixture of an excellent season has secured top spot for Old Sodbury under 15’s.

They made light work of AEK Boco Colts, a team that had held title rivals Timsbury Athletic to a 1-1 draw the previous week.

A cagey closely contended opening 20 minutes was soon forgotten once leading scorer Ross Womack found his shooting boots. An excellent save from stand in keeper Josh Pearce and a couple of missed scoring opportunities failed to dampen Old Sodbury’s determination to make this a winning end to a championship season.

Womack netted a personal best six goals bringing his season’s haul to an incredible 60 from open play. He was ably assisted by his fellow forwards Callum Heaphy, Robbie Foxwell and Ethan Lloyd, with the latter scoring twice.

Old Sodbury ran out 10-0 winners to round off their season in the best possible fashion, a season in which the club scored 134 times and conceded just 35.

The club is now looking for new players to complement their squad as they look to compete a division higher next season.
