Accepting the chain of office

Housing scheme for Yate open space opposed CIVIC leaders and local residents are opposing plans for new housing on open space in Yate.

Woodstock Homes want to build 16 houses and two flats on land off Cambrian Drive.

If the scheme gets permission, a bungalow in Cambrian Drive will have to be knocked down in order to gain access to what is currently a landlocked piece of ground enjoyed as open space and used as a play area.

Yate Town Council has opposed the plan and more than 40 local residents have sent letters of objection to South Gloucestershire Council, which will eventually determine the application.

They are all concerned about the loss of the open space and the increase in traffic that will result from more homes.

There are also concerns that the plot is too small for the number of properties, which include some affordable homes, that are planned.

Councillors said it was “essential” to keep the land as open space. Full story, page 4.

Fine after Westerleigh Road fly tipping caught on camera A MAN who dumped rubbish on Westerleigh Road, Emersons Green, has been fined £500 after admitting fly tipping.

James Meade, 36, of Portland Street, Soundwell, Bristol, was also ordered to pay £500 costs and a £50 victim surcharge by North Avon magistrates in Yate.

The court was told the rubbish, including polystyrene sheeting, bricks, wood, nails, screws and concrete dust had been dumped on the forecourt of the Black Horse Service Station.

Examination of CCTV footage showed a Vauxhall Vivero being driven onto the forecourt and after visiting the garage shop, two men opened the rear doors of the van.

They tipped material from the vehicle using a wheelbarrow, plastic sheeting and by pushing waste from the van onto the ground.

Police and South Gloucestershire Council officers went to the address of the van’s registered keeper in Soundwell and spoke to Meade, who later pleaded guilty to knowingly causing waste to be dumped. He also admitted failing to name the driver of the van at the time of the incident.

The council said there had been a number of successful prosecutions this year related to fly tipping and more cases were being prepared.

It reminded residents to only let registered waste carriers take away their rubbish otherwise they could be held liable if material was dumped illegally.

Man injured in Old Sodbury crash A DRIVER was taken to hospital with suspected back injuries after a road accident in Old Sodbury.

He was cut free from his car by firefighters who used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of the vehicle.

The crews were called out just after midnight on June 22 and worked alongside paramedics to release the man, thought to be in his 20s.

Lib Dems pledge to fight for Yate minor injuries unit

J LunchTIME TREAT I

A PLEDGE has been made by Liberal Democrats on South Gloucestershire Council to try and protect Yate’s minor injuries unit.

They have responded to a decision by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt that a minor injuries unit (MIU) should not be established at Cossham Hospital, despite a local campaign to get such a service.

In his letter to the council outlining the decision, Mr Hunt also mentioned the MIU at Yate, saying its provision had not led to a cut in demand on local accident and emergency services.

Recently there have been suggestions that minor injuries could be treated at enhanced GP surgeries rather than in dedicated units, raising concerns about the future of Yate MIU. When it opened in 2010, it was to deal with injuries such as scalds, bites, cuts and grazes, as well as sprains and minor head injuries. Staff can also treat arm, lower leg and foot injuries, including broken bones.

But there is some confusion among patients over what can be dealt with and some people turn up with conditions that could be treated by a GP or should involve a hospital visit. There have also been complaints that its X-ray facility is only open on weekdays Councillor Sue Hope (Lib Dem, Cotswold Edge) said people were worried that the Cossham decision could lead to Yate’s unit being taken away.

She said: “We’ve been clear all along that we want to see an expansion of medical services at Yate, not a cutdown.

“We will fight to protect the Yate MIU, which saves people from making a journey into the city for urgent medical treatments. It’s well used, and popular.

“Can you imagine having to fight your way through rush hour traffic to get to Southmead hospital, or taking an hour-long bus for an A&E visit, just because the local MIU had been closed?”

Warning to businesses over fake bailiffs BUSINESSES are being targeted by an increasing number of fake bailiffs threatening to recover debts they claim are owed.

A range of small and medium sized businesses - from nurseries to hotels - have been targeted by cold callers purporting to be bailiffs working on behalf of the courts and attempting to recover funds for allegedly outstanding debts.

When payment by bank transfer is refused, the caller often threatens to visit the business to recover the debt that is supposedly owed.

People running businesses have been advised of steps to take if they receive such contact, including asking for details of the debt in writing and checking with the court or originating company to confirm legitimacy.

They should establish what the debt is for and not make a rushed decision based on just one phone call.

Bailiffs are only used to collect or recover debts in certain circumstances.

Anyone receiving a suspect call should speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau or report the matter to Action Fraud via http:// www.actionfraud.police.uk or by phoning 0300 123 2040.

Householders and councillors fight homes plan for Yate open space PLANS to build 18 homes on a piece of open space in Yate have been met with more than 40 objections.

Developers at Woodstock Homes want to put the houses and flats on what they call scrub grassland off Cambrian Drive.

In order to gain access to the site, a bungalow would have to be demolished to allow a road into the currently landlocked area.

But people living in the vicinity are fighting to stop the scheme and have been joined in their opposition by Yate Town Council.

The council said the land was a “well used piece of open space” that had been used along with an adjoining open play area for 35 years - since before existing houses were built - and it was “essential” to keep it.

It fears that if built, the new housing will lead to more traffic

in Cambrian Drive, increase problems at a junction with Wellington Road and lead to householders already living in the area having to look out onto houses, drives and parking lots.

Councillors are also concerned about the impact on those living next to the bungalow that is earmarked for demolition as they will have traffic going between their homes.

They further raised the question of access to the land that will remain open, claiming the development would effectively cut off Cambrian Drive, Cheshire Close, Chichester Way and Mountbatten Close.

In its objection to South Gloucestershire Council, the town council said it was unacceptable not to have public access from the south to the open space.

It also pointed out that occupiers of the new homes would be very close to the play area and would find its use, especially by teenagers enjoying a kickabout, intrusive.

The council said: “We oppose the development strongly but if it is to happen, it needs to be designed to minimise this risk so we avoid occupiers of these houses complaining about legitimate use of the open space.”

Woodstock has described the site it wants to develop as an “unmanaged” plot on the edge of the designated play area.

It wants to build 16 two, three and four-bedroom houses and two one-bed flats on the land, along with 38 parking spaces, with six of the homes designated as affordable.

Local residents who have opposed the scheme have criticised the loss of a well used piece of open space, an increase in traffic and safety risks and the scale of the development proposed.

They also said that when the Cambrian Green Court extra care development for the elderly was built more than four years ago, they were assured that no more open space in the locality would be built on.

Multi-cat households

W

E see plenty of owners who have more than one cat and in many instances these cats live harmoniously together. However this is not always the case. Cats in the wild (with the exception of lions) are usually solitary predators. Being solitary, cats are therefore territorial animals with scent marking being important, as it helps them communicate to others and avoid conflict over hunting areas. If however another cat strays onto a territory then fighting is not uncommon.

Companion cats are all capable of living alone, but some have been selected by the owner to live together. Some cats can adapt to this and will choose to get on with each other, whereas others will actively try to avoid each other which can be tricky in a normal house environment.

This can lead to problem behaviours, such as urine spraying, but also chronic stress issues such as overgrooming and stress induced cystitis. Some may sleep more, hide away or show changes in appetite. If they have access to outside some cats may even choose to leave the home altogether to establish their own territory elsewhere.

There are several things to consider when making a multi cat household work. These include the compatibility of the individual cats, the number of resources and the local population density, as large numbers of cats

externally in the neighbourhood can add yet further pressure to a cat that lives in a multi-cat household.

The best combination of cats is usually siblings that have grown up showing sociable traits with each other. Not all siblings may be compatible however, such as the quietest of the litter with a confident sibling. Cats that get on usually demonstrate things such as nose to nose greetings, touching, head rubbing or mutual grooming behaviours.

Conversely tension may be seen such as staring at each other, one individual entering a room and another immediately leaving, as well as fighting.

Stress can be reduced by providing ample resources such as food and water bowls, scratch posts, toys and litter trays. The aim is to have one per cat plus an extra. So if you had 3 cats you should be providing 4 litter trays in varying locations. Allow cats to plenty of hiding areas and entry/exit points to avoid conflict too. High perches such as book shelves and scratch towers are appreciated by stressed cats too so that they can observe situations from a safe distance.

Quality award served up to Yate chippy A YATE chippy has scooped a quality award from the trade body of the fish and chip industry.

Pisces, in Station Road, received the accolade from the 102-yearold National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which represents the nation’s chip shops.

It runs the scheme to help raise standards and to reward and promote shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene.

The award for Pisces, run by Julia Holbrook, will be valid for two years, when it will be re-assessed.

To qualify for the award, each shop is inspected and assessed on presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and the quality of the food provided.

Richard Wardell, of the NFFF, said: “Pisces clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes. Achieving the quality award provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”

Youngsters in a twirl at Big Lunch street party JUNIOR baton twirlers helped entertain huge crowds at the fourth Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch.

The Pee Wee Group from the Yate Star Twirlers consists of youngsters aged from five to 10.

They were among a host of performers at the free street party, which saw thousands of people tuck into picnics in the town centre.

This year’s event also allowed those enjoying the day to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day, with the town awash with red, white and blue.

It was the Eden Project in Cornwall that came up with the Big Lunch idea and it has since been taken up by communities around the country.

Challenge offers window to the world of blooming businesses SHOP windows in Chipping Sodbury will be the centre of attention when businesses compete for a coveted prize.

The Business in Bloom window contest has been organised by Sodbury Chamber of Commerce and will run from July 6-22.

Those taking part have been asked to incorporate a theme of Greening Grey Spaces into their design in support of the town’s entry in the annual Britain in Bloom competition.

Judges will also be looking for floral content linked to the Sodbury in Bloom colour theme of purple, mauve, white and magenta.

The creator of the best dressed window will receive a prize of £150, to be donated to the winner’s chosen charity.

Rich McDonough, vicechairman of the chamber, said: “This is a fantastic way for businesses in the town to show support for the great work done

Meanwhile, pairs of flowerfilled boots have also been appearing outside homes and

Yate Rotarians celebrate successful fund raising year OUTGOING Yate Rotary Club president Mike Gauntlett headed another successful year for the organisation, with thousands of pounds donated to help others.

Local and international causes benefited from a total give-away of £15,590.

Mike said: “My year started with the South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival in July - our biggest fund raising event of the year and one that enables us to Mike Gauntlett make so many donations to good causes.”

Handing over to new president Ron Nelson, Mike thanked members for their help and support throughout the year.

He said the rewards were there for all to see in the donations they had been able to make as a result of everyone’s hard work.

Civic leaders start work in Yate and Sodbury

NEWLY appointed mayors have started their terms of office in Yate and Sodbury at the beginning of a new civic year.

Paddy Smith has taken up the reins at Sodbury Town Council, while Tony Davis was voted into the role in Yate.

Councillor Smith said: “I am proud to have lived in historic Chipping Sodbury all my life.

I am passionate about Old Sodbury and Chipping Sodbury and will do my best to fulfill my duties as mayor with the eight newly elected and existing councillors.

“We will work together with the community to enhance Chipping Sodbury and Old Sodbury further.”

Mr Smith is a long-standing member of Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club and also belongs to the never-sail-anywhere Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club.

He has served on Chipping Sodbury Town Trust for 12 years

and been a councillor for 13 years. He takes over the mayoral role from Wendy Whittle, who held the post for nearly three years and is now deputy mayor and the council’s vice-chairman for the coming year.

Councillor Davis said he was “deeply honoured” to be elected as mayor of Yate and gave a vote of thanks to outgoing mayor Wully Perks for his support of the town during his two-year term of office.

He also praised members of the community and local organisations for working “tirelessly” to safeguard what needed protecting and to improve services.

Mr Davis said: “I truly believe that Yate is a wonderful place to live. I am looking forward to the new cinema opening next year, something many residents have wanted for years.”

The Sodbury Players Youth Section summer show runs from 18-19th July.

Kayleigh Rose, Spokeswoman for Sodbury Players, says "After the success of last years 'Bugsy Malone', and their recent win at this year's youth festival, it promises to be their biggest show to date.”

Sodbury Players Youth Section (SPYS) made Sodbury Players history back in April by winning the final of the Five Counties Youth Drama Festival with their production 'Still Thinking'.

The SPYS had already won the first round of the festival back in March, something which the group regularly achieve, however this is the first time SPYS have returned from the festival final with the trophy.

Pop-up shop for Jessie May takes off in Yate Shopping Centre

MORE than £1,800 was taken in the opening week of a charity’s first pop-up shop in Yate Shopping Centre, giving a major boost to the Jessie May Trust.

A unit at 33 North Walk has been given free of charge for two months to the Kingswood-based trust, which provides nursing care at home for children and young people with life limiting conditions.

Andrew Lowrey, the shopping centre manager, said: “As a local children’s charity, we wanted to provide support for this very valuable service.”

He said the temporary shop would help raise the trust’s profile and bring in much needed cash.

The charity was founded by Chris and Philippa Purrington as a result of the death of their daughter, Jessica May, who had the genetic condition spinal muscular atrophy. She was just four-and-a-half-months-old.

Since 1996, the trust has provided its care for free in the South Gloucestershire, Bristol and north Somerset area but

Julian Withers, its head of fund raising and communications, said the shop’s first week was “fabulous”, with no-one expecting to raise so much money.

Thousands enjoy music in the sun at festival’s anniversary weekend MORE than 5,000 people enjoyed Yate’s re-named community music festival, creating the second biggest attendance in its ten-year history.

Given the new name of Yate Rocks! to mark the anniversary, the event was held in Kingsgate Park over two days.

Tribute band the Mangledwurzels headlined the programme on the Saturday, which also featured a number of performances by mostly local bands.

They were supported by dance groups such as Glitter Bugs Dance Crew, Redds Dance Group and Pure Dance Crew, with other entertainment ranging from gymnastic demonstrations, majorettes and arts and crafts to football games, sideshows and children’s fun rides.

Yate town councillor John Ford, chairman of the events committee, said it was one of the most successful weekends since the event was started.

He said: “The festival was up there with the best of them and the second biggest attendance, combined with glorious weather, ensured that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“Our thanks go to the dancers, musicians, some old friends, some new and the crowd

The second day started with a Praise in the Park event, with local churches providing an outdoor service. An afternoon picnic followed, with music supplied by the Westerly

Showband. Mr Ford said: “We are now looking forward to the next festival in the park in June 2016.”

24 Hour Party promised for charity fundraiser

THE Yate Relay for Life charity has released its 24 hour programme as it celebrates their 10th Birthday.

The event is on the 4th July at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre.

Over the the last decade over £280,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK. This year’s event will see over 250 people of all ages relay in teams for 24 hours to raise more money.

There is a full programme of activities during the relay. From bake offs, to stall holders and a bouncy castle, organisers promise something for the whole family.

This year there will be a live music takeover from 5-8pm on the

Saturday evening. Regulars and relay favourites, Cherry Red, will be performing along with local band 5am and Bristol based band The Fizzies.

Chipping Sodbury families enjoy their French connection NEARLY 40 visitors from the French town of Cesson travelled by air and sea to enjoy a weekend with Chipping Sodbury families.

The event was the latest celebration of the long-standing relationship between the two towns, which have been formally twinned for 36 years.

Among the party from Cesson – which lies south-east of Paris – were some visitors who had never previously been to Chipping Sodbury. Meanwhile some new host families signed up to help accommodate the guests.

In response to feedback from previous exchange trips, the weekend schedule included more free time to allow everyone to get to know each other better.

But there were still a number of organised events, including a hog roast at the Lamb Inn, Iron Acton, with musical entertainment and a quiz.

Young visitors checked out the Armadillo youth café in Yate, a guided walk around Chipping Sodbury was laid on and the group also enjoyed a visit to Cardiff.

Library service given top marks by thousands of users NEARLY every library user involved in a survey about the service in South Gloucestershire said they would recommend it to others.

The survey of more than 3,800 users showed 99 per cent of them would suggest to other people that they should try it out.

There was also a high rating for the standard of service provided, with 97 per cent judging it to be either very good or good – one of the best results from similar councils that run libraries.

Among aspects of the service highlighted by users were the quality of staff and the range of services provided by libraries.

For many people, libraries were important for digital services, with more than 70 per cent using library computers or accessing free wi-fi for study, work, jobseeking or using online library services.

Library staff use such surveys to make improvements. The last survey in November 2011 led to the introduction of free wi-fi and the replacement of computers. Charges to teenagers for reserving books were also removed.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the South Gloucestershire communities committee, said: “This is a really great endorsement of the library service and the fantastic work of all the staff who make a visit to the library so valuable.

“We also want to thank the public for engaging in this survey because it helps us understand what we are doing well and where we can make improvements.”

More tenants sign up for new Yate Riverside scheme

TWO more tenants have signed up for units at Yate Riverside, bringing occupancy of the new development to 70 per cent.

Frankie & Benny’s restaurant and Pets at Home are the latest companies to take space at the cinema-led scheme in Link Road.

The Italian-American restaurant will be one of six eating establishments located next to the Cineworld six-screen cinema complex, with announcements already made that Prezzo and Dean’s Diner have committed to the scheme.

Pets at Home will be the second of three new retailers on the site and follows fashion chain Next in deciding to move to Yate.

Yate Riverside is an extension to the main Yate Shopping Centre and the first of the new businesses are due to open in December.

Shopping centre manager, Andy Lowrey, said: “These are two more high quality names to add to the ever-growing list of retailers and restaurants represented and interested in coming to Yate.

“The interest shown in the new Riverside development is very encouraging and we are still talking to new tenants interested in taking space in the town.

“Construction is on schedule to hand over the restaurant units to tenants in September

and the cinema in December for fitting out, with openings in December and next Easter respectively.”

Mark Hull, group property controller, of Ivypark Ltd - asset managers for the owners

of the shopping centre and Yate Riverside - said: “We always knew this development would be of great interest to retailers but as owners we have got to ensure there is a good mix that will appeal to the general public.”

New community worker welcomed by Abbotswood Action Group A CAMPAIGN group has appointed a new community development worker to help improve the Abbotswood area of Yate.

Rob Elliott will be in post for the next three years as a result of a Yate priority neighbourhood grant being secured by the Abbotswood Action Group.

A former children’s worker and youth worker, Rob has previously been involved with community groups in London and Oxfordshire.

He will now work alongside the Abbotswood team, including volunteers who came forward as the result of a community plan being published for the area.

Mary Wright, chairwoman of the action group, said: “Rob brings with him great enthusiasm for the outdoors, growing and gardening.

“The action group is delighted to make this announcement and is looking forward to working with Rob.” She said Rob wanted people

to realise their fullest potential and ambitions, especially when it came to being involved in activities through a love of their locality.

Mary said: “Rob is looking forward to meeting everyone over time. He is keen to hear ideas and suggestions and especially to chat with anyone who would like to help turn ideas and priorities from residents into real solutions for the Abbotswood area.”

The purchase of some open space at the Abbotswood shopping centre by Yate Town Council will also give the action group greater freedom to make improvements.

Housing association looking for non-exec directors to help meet its targets MERLIN Housing Society is looking to appoint up to three nonexecutive directors to its board.

The Chipping Sodbury-based housing association, which has more than 16,000 people living in its homes, said it currently had plans to invest in some 1,000 new properties by 2019.

Those joining the board would help the society meet its targets.

Merlin said anyone with senior level experience of leadership, finance or house development, especially in the commercial or private sector, would be able to increase their experience through being a board member.

Calendar pictures for Chipping Sodbury - then and now A CALENDAR is being produced to show how buildings and streets in Chipping Sodbury today compare with their appearance a century ago.

The then-and-now calendar will feature images taken in the early 1900s as well as up-to-date photographs.

Each month will show an old picture of the town alongside the latest view of the same premises or road.

The old photos have been taken from the Murray Dowding collection, while the new images are the work of local photographer and Sodbury Chamber of Commerce vicechairman, Richard McDonough, who has matched and carefully re-shot the scenes.

The calendar is being produced to help promote the town and includes key dates in the town’s diary for 2016.

Chamber members hope copies will be bought not only by local people but also visitors as a

souvenir of their stay and to remind them to return.

The calendars will be available shortly from Sodbury's shops, post office and the tourist information centre.

Local historian Jim Elsworth, who has provided a commentary for each page of the calendar, said he was delighted to be asked to support the project.

He said: "The result is a calendar which local people will appreciate and I’m sure it will find its way around the world to many people with a Sodbury connection."

Profits from sales will be used to further the chamber's work in helping Chipping Sodbury develop as a tourist destination and business location.

I will miss this special town with its great community feel

W

ORD is getting round that I’m not going to be here for much longer!

We’ll be moving to Solihull from Chipping Sodbury in mid-August, having had a final Sunday in St John’s Church on July 19.

So what do I say in this final article?

First, I’d like to say how much we have enjoyed living in Chipping Sodbury and getting to know many people across the town and the local villages. Chipping Sodbury is a great place to live – it’s got so many facilities and yet has the beautiful Cotswold hills very close by. One of the things that makes this town special is that we have so many different shops in the street – from delicious bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, local butchers, health food shop, charity shops and cafes, clothes shops, gift shops and a post

office. The shop staff are always most helpful and shopping here is a pleasure.

Secondly, it’s a place where there is real community spirit.

The Big Lunch in June, the June Festival, Victorian Day (and dare I say it, the Nativity Crib Festival) are testimony to community groups (and this includes the schools) working together for the good of the town. The churches here have been delighted to be a part of that community spirit.

One thing I will take away with me is the memory of being able to work so positively with the various community groups to contribute to making this town a better place in which to live.

But I’d like to add a comment about participation. Many people have worked hard on these various projects for many years.

If younger people don’t step up and give their time, these things will stop happening and

Chipping Sodbury will lose something very special.

Thirdly, I would like to pay tribute to my ecumenical colleagues. The churches of the different denominations have truly worked well together – serving the community through Street Pastors, the Food Bank and the shop chaplaincy that’s about to be launched.

I am often quoting some words that I think are very special: “For all that has been thanks; for all that will be - Yes.” (Dag Hammarskjöld). These are words that I wish to use as I leave here. I want to thank God for all that has happened here in recent years. It’s been good.

But I also have to say “Yes” to God as I leave this place and start working in the churches of Solihull. God holds all of our lives and God will never leave us. May God continue to bless you all.

Big revenues rise for Chipping Sodbury insurance company

CHIPPING Sodbury-based insurance group Jelf posted an 11 per cent rise in revenues during the first half of its financial year after completing a hat-trick of acquisitions.

The company announced interim results for the six months to March 31, 2015, which revealed revenues growth to £43.7 million from £39.3 million in the same period last year.

During the period, Jelf bought Birmingham-based Cronin & Co, Yorkshire-based Beaumonts Insurance Group and the Hamilton Bond Group in Worcester.

The company, which employs 1,200 staff across all its offices, said the new acquisitions had provided a “substantial share” of

the growth.

It also said the board has approved the company’s first interim dividend of 0.8p per share, adding that it expected to pay both annual and interim dividends in the future.

Alex Alway, group chief executive, said: “I am pleased that all our businesses are trading strongly and outperforming last year. We expect to continue this trend in the second half of the year. Our acquisitions are integrating well into the Jelf business and delivering positive benefits.”

The company advises clients on insurance, employee benefits, health insurance and financial planning.

MEMBERS of the Actonians drama group brushed up their directing skills during a workshop with actor Mark McGann.

One of the four McGann actor brothers, he shared his knowledge and expertise with the team during the full-day event.

The Iron Acton amateur dramatic group said the workshop left them “exhausted but enthused” by the end of the day, having been given an insight into how to improve as directors.

The workshop was the second to have been arranged by the Actonians, following on from one on acting skills that was led by local actor Mark Danbury.

Mr Danbury is due to run a second workshop in September.

Raise your glasses for landmark beer festival THE countdown has started for the annual South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival, which has reached its landmark 20th anniversary.

Organised by Yate Rotary Club, the charity fundraising event takes place at the Ridings in Chipping Sodbury on July 10 and 11.

More than 100 real ales, together with cider, perry and wine, will be available, while a line-up of local bands playing a variety of music will entertain the festival-goers.

Organisers have promised the event, usually a sell-out, will be “the most memorable yet”.

Full details, including how to get tickets, are available on the festival website but the music line-up includes: Friday 6.30pm-8.30pm: Billy in the Lowground, named after a famous old bluegrass fiddle tune.

9pm-11pm: Dogs and Demons, a rock and indie covers band that formed in 2010.

Saturday Noon-2pm: We Are The Lost Boys, a rock and pop covers band.

2.30pm-4.30pm: Acoustica, a four piece acoustic covers band from Bristol.

5pm-6pm: The Axxeman, 60s through to the 80s mixing classic rock with timeless pop and a pinch of the modern day.

6.30pm-8.30pm: Otis Mack & The Tubby Bluesters, specialising in high octane classic covers and original R&B, rock’n’roll and soul numbers with a touch of blues.

To barbecue or not to barbecue?

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

KNOW this may be controversial, but I’m going to say it anyway – I’m not a big fan of barbecues.As soon as we have a ray of sunshine, all the magazines start banging on about perfect recipes. Come on guys, we’re not in Australia, where you can pretty much guarantee the weather is going to be great every day. What happens? You rush round getting all the stuff and then it rains. This month I’m featuring a simple recipe that can go on the barbecue or is equally good cooked in the oven. So you’re sorted, come rain or shine.

Malaysian Fish Parcels This dish can be put together in minutes and tastes luscious.

Rain or shine it’s a winner.

Serves 4 (4 Parcels) Ingredients: Chunky white fish e.g. loin of cod or monkfish tails for a treat - 500g.

Good quality mango chutney (see Cook’s Tips)– 8 generous tablespoons White wine or rice wine if you have some - 4 tablespoons (1 per parcel).

Thai 7 spice seasoning - just less than ½ teaspoon.

If you want to make the dish really special, add about ½ a chopped fresh mango PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 190C, 375F, OR GAS MARK 5 Here’s what you do: 1. Chop the fish into chunky cubes.

2. Cut 4 pieces of tinfoil 10 x 10inches and put a quarter of the fish in the middle of each piece of foil.

3. Put a generous couple of tablespoons of the mango chutney and a quarter of the chopped mango (if using), on top of each portion of fish.

4. Make the foil into a purse shape by drawing the edges up around the fish mixture.

5. 1 tablespoon of wine and the Thai seasoning over each portion of fish.

6. Twist the tinfoil to form a tight parcel.

7. Place the parcels on a baking tray and bake for 10- 15 mins, (To check if ready- untwist 1 parcel carefully. Take a fork and gently half one cube of fish. If it’s done it will come away easily.)

8. Serve with Thai rice or Chinese noodles and Chinese vegetables like pak choi or Chinese leaves.

Cook’s Tips:

Use the best quality mango chutney you can find. If you go to Romey’s Indian Restaurant in Thornbury, she sells her homemade chutneys which are amazing. Better still come and do a Preserve Making class with me and learn how to make it yourself!

If you use the more expensive ‘Release’ foil the fish will be much easier to remove.

You can use the other half of the mango to make a mango salsa to go with Malaysian fish parcels or add the mango to an exotic fruit salad of mango, pineapple, kiwi fruit grapes and lychees.

Celebrating our historic past – Chipping Sodbury Heritage Trail

IN the 15th century the early travel writer Leland described Chipping Sodbury as a pretty little market town, while Daniel Defoe remarked that it had one of the largest cheese markets in England.

Many are aware that a market continues to this day and is held every second and fourth Saturday throughout the year.

Other events that have survived through the centuries include the annual Chipping Sodbury Festival, held every June, and the mop fairs which take place in March and September.

We are currently featuring properties in Chipping Sodbury that have a commemorative plaque but people can follow the heritage trail themselves with the help of a dedicated map found in the entrance to Hatherell’s Yard, while a trail guide is available at the tourist information centre.

Each plaque gives a brief glimpse of the life of a property and its previous owners and this month we feature a building that has been at the heart of the Town for more than 730 years, playing a leading role in its religious and cultural heritage.

Looking back to the late 1800s, the church played a central role in Sodbury society. The Church of England Temperance Society organised many entertainments to brighten people’s lives. In February 1892 it arranged a series of free concerts, which continued on a monthly basis. Lectures, sales, working classes, shows, fetes and

afternoon teas ran throughout the year and involved young and old. The school featured heavily in this entertainment.

The church has been added to over the centuries, with the tower and south aisle built during the 15th century. A major restoration in 1868 included a modified porch by architect George Edmund Street, a leading practitioner of the Victorian Gothic revival whose work included the nave of Bristol

Cathedral and the restoration of Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin.

Today the church continues to play a vital role in the life of the town, its residents and school children. Its annual crib festival is a major highlight, with thousands of visitors descending on the town each December to visit the exhibition of more than 200 nativity cribs gathered from around the world.

St John’s Church – Wickwar Road The church was first built as a chapel of ease as the church established in Old Sodbury in the early 1100s was up to two miles away. The church was very much the centre of activity and the journey to Old Sodbury during winter months would have been difficult.

FOR many people the Middle Ages are far removed from their usual contact with history. Yet, from a local perspective the origins of our local towns and villages nearly all stem from the Saxon or later medieval periods. Naturally, in this year of innumerable anniversaries, it makes sense to cover our medieval past with the Magna Carta (June 16) and Battle of Agincourt (October 25) in the news.

In local heritage circles at least, medieval research is flavour of the month. The Victoria County History project has employed a specific researcher with knowledge of Latin and medieval French to analyse Sodbury’s early documents to help produce a new history of the Sodburys.

Medieval Display While at Yate Heritage Centre, Sarah Hands and Sandra Hetterley have been busy exposing the area’s rich medieval past. One highlight of this research has been the role of local medieval knights. Many might presume knights were solely a feature of mighty castles such as Berkeley. However, lords

based at local manors fought in national international conflicts throughout the Middle Ages.

Both John de la Warre of Wickwar Manor and Ralph De Willington of Yate Court fought in the third crusades (1189-92) with Richard the Lionheart.

Several local medieval families continued to supply knights for major battles during the following centuries. However, the most significant knight regarding 2015 anniversaries was Sir John Codrington of Dodington Manor, who was the standard bearer for Henry V at Agincourt in 1415.

Bearing the standard for the king demonstrated to the enemy that the monarch remained undefeated so Codrington was a vital part of the battle.

An exhibition at Yate Heritage Centre is also a celebration of our medieval heritage. It is worth considering that our market towns at Chipping Sodbury, Wickwar and Hawkesbury were all laid out in medieval times.

Indeed, much of Sodbury’s medieval fabric remains behind later Georgian facades.

Churches too retain many medieval features, despite later Victorian rebuilding. Nearly all

parishes’ churches in our area have medieval foundations.

Lesser known features include the Stanshawes 15th century bell at Yate and the splendid 12th century Norman font at St James, Westerleigh.

Medieval Yate & Sodbury runs from July 23 until September 26.

The display will feature medieval archaeology from the area and contain specially designed shields representing many of the leading medieval families of the area.

Events at the Centre 10.30am-4.30pm, Saturday, July 4: Medieval archaeology day on St Mary’s Green featuring 13th century sword fighting, medieval archery, food demonstrations, Vikings, numerous “hands on” activities, including an excavation taking place on the green. Medieval and Tudor storytelling and performances also taking place during the day.

My principles wont allow me to accept pay increase

S a local man who has lived in the area my whole life, It is a source of immense pride to me that the people of South Gloucestershire, placed their trust in me to represent them in parliament.

I did not stand for parliament for financial gain, and at a time when trust in politics is so low, when public sector workers have had a pay freeze or 1 per cent rises in recent years, and when many of my constituents are only now starting to feel the benefits of a recovering economy, I do not think it is right to take the proposed 10% MPs pay rise.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) looks set to give

MPs a 10.3 per cent rise in the coming months, in defiance of the Prime Minister’s advice and that of many MPs themselves.

After the expenses scandals which shook public trust in politics so badly IPSA was created to be totally independent of parliament. As a consequence, it is impossible to refuse the pay rise outright.

What each MP decides to do with the rise is a matter for their own conscience, but I have taken the decision not to take the money for myself, but to use it to do some good in our community and help small local projects which will benefit the residents of our local area.

Too often small community charities and groups are

overlooked or overshadowed by the ‘giants’ of the charity world, but I know from having spoken to thousands of people in the election campaign how much of a difference a small helping hand can make to someone’s life.

I’ve taken the decision to set up an independent panel to award small charities and local groups, either new or longestablished, with a small pot of money to help them serve the community.

Each month I’ll be giving away the amount of the pay rise to one of these groups, and I would like to encourage anyone who knows of a worthy local group to contact me by emailing luke.hall.mp@parliament.uk.

Academy sixth-formers tell it like it is . . .

SIXTH Form students from Winterbourne International Academy have produced their own alternative prospectus giving the lowdown on post-16 life at the academy.

Their publication includes revision tips, advice on budgeting, and how to prepare for your first day in sixth form as well as all-important information about the common room, cafe, trips, parties, proms and other events.

Five students from Years 12 and 13 worked on the propsectus with support from Rob Phillips, head of communications at The Ridings Federation of Academies, and Allan Finnie, studio manager at Pace Print in Clevedon.

The students, Rachel Hickey, Chloe Yuen, Holly Sawyer, Tily Brogan and Elliana Saladino, who have recently been busy with AS and A-level examinations, are considering further education or employment opportunities in journalism, PR, media and marketing.

Mr Finnie said: “I thought the students were brilliant. It was great to hear them coming up

with so many ideas and bringing such enthusiasm to the project.”

Mr Phillips added: “The students have impressed me throughout the process with their

ideas and the understanding of the project. The last Ofsted report highlighted our Sixth Form’s commitment to helping students shape the next stages of

their education and employment and this experience will prove invaluable to them. All five students have a bright future ahead of them.”

Shoppers help provide windfall for music groups TWO music groups in Sodbury were given a cash boost from a project run by supermarket firm Waitrose.

Chipping Sodbury Music Society and the Sodbury Jazz and Blues Festival received the windfall from the company’s Community Matters scheme.

The monthly pay-out involves customers of individual stores choosing a favourite local project by dropping a green token into a box once they have done their shopping.

Every month, each store then shares out £1,000 between three local schemes, with individual sums based on the number of tokens in the box.

Since its launch in 2008, the scheme has donated £14 million to a variety of charities nationwide.

The music society, which has received £413, said it was grateful for the support from Waitrose and its customers.

Chairman Fred Willington said: “This money will help us continue to provide high quality

Council leaders back campaign to limit release of sky lanterns A CAMPAIGN by Avon fire fighters to cut the use of Chinese-style sky lanterns has won the backing of South Gloucestershire Council.

The paper lanterns which are released into the sky are powered by a flame suspended on a wire frame and are causing increasing concern because of the risk they pose.

In 2013 CCTV footage showed a lantern caused a fire at a recycling plant in the West

Midlands, which took more than 200 fire fighters to extinguish.

Kevin Pearson, Avon’s chief fire officer, asked South Gloucestershire and other councils in the area to increase controls over the use of the lanterns on council land and through the event licensing process.

He said: “The floating lanterns contain a naked flame which represents a significant fire risk to life and property

Cyclists offered help to recover from Sodbury bike ride

HEALTH-related businesses will help cyclists taking part in this summer’s Saddleback Sodbury Sportive.

Organised by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, the event on Sunday, August 16, offers three routes of 30, 60 and 100 miles, each one starting and finishing at the town’s rugby club.

The Tollhouse Clinic in Horse Street will provide a 20-minute massage to participants for a minimum donation of £10, which will go to each cyclist’s chosen charity.

Meanwhile, Yoga-in, which runs classes in Chipping Sodbury and Old Sodbury, will offer 20-minute cool-down sessions for those who complete the event.

Yate school to host orienteering challenge with a difference AS part of a fund raising drive to improve school facilities, Yate’s North Road Community Primary is hosting a prize-filled family orienteering day The event, on Sunday, July 5, is open to local residents of all ages and is designed to test the navigational skills of participants in a fun and friendly challenge which starts and ends at the school, from 2pm onwards.

Prizes for the top five finishers include a family day out at Old Down Country Park, a family meal for four at The Codrington Arms, four admission tickets to Cattle Country, meal vouchers for The Fox and two children’s tickets for Slimbridge WWT – plus a memento for everyone who takes part. Sponsor Edison Ford is donating 10% of all sales and lettings commission linked to North Road School and the orienteering event to the school.

Last year’s inaugural event saw 100 people plot their way around a specially-designed circular route and raise money for the school. Head teacher Mrs Williams said: “Last year’s event was so much fun that we are planning a bigger and better event this year.

Mrs Tricky has already plotted the route, which is currently under lock and key.”

Entry is £7 per family of four on the day, or £5 in advance if you register via North Road Primary School website http://www. northroadprimaryschool.co.uk/. Under 4’s go free (not included in family of four), but the route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Fun Dog show in August HAVE you got an adorable hound? If so, a Fun Dog Show next month could be just the thing for you.

It is being organised by the Friends of South Glos Strays and includes both pedigree and novelty classes, with lots of prizes and rosettes. There’s even a free class for any dog not winning a rosette.

But it’s not just for the canines – the organisers promise fun for all the family too, including face painting and children’s activities, craft stalls, a barbecue and refreshments.

The event takes place on Sunday August 16 under cover at Avon Riding Centre, Kings Weston Road, Henbury, Bristol BS10 7QT opposite Blaise Castle car park. Warm-up for Yate Town ahead of new season YATE Town have arranged a series of friendly matches in preparation for the new league season due to kick off on August 8.

Manager Craig Laird has also secured the services of some new players as Yate try to improve on last season’s final sixth position.

Defenders Matt Villis and Callum Laird have committed themselves to Yate, joining from Bideford and Weymouth respectively.

The club’s midfield options have also been boosted by the arrivals of Alec Fiddes from Weymouth, Jack Camm, formerly at Cinderford Town, and Brett Trowbridge from Taunton Town.

It is anticipated that the great majority of last season’s squad will remain, although Josh Ford has returned to his former club Frome Town and Joe Chandler has moved to Mangotsfield United.

The pre-season friendlies include home games against Hungerford Town and Bath City, as well as several away matches.

Re-organisation within the Southern League, caused by Clevedon Town’s relegation due to floodlighting problems, has resulted in both Marlow and Burnham being moved from the Central Division to the South & West Division, while Fleet Town and Petersfield Town have moved in the opposite direction.

The Southern League fixtures are due to be published on July 16 but the friendly matches arranged so far are: Sat, July 18, Shepton Mallet. Away kick-off 3pm.

The reserves will again be in the Gloucestershire County League next season and will also be engaged in the pre-season Fry Club tournament.

Following their promotion last season, when they also won the GFA Under-18 Shield for the first time, Yate’s youth team will now play in the premier division of the Somerset Floodlight League.

At the league’s AGM, it was also announced that Yate Town Youth had won the shield for the most sporting team in their division for the second successive time.

Classic day out at race circuit

HUNDREDS of classic, kit and sports cars were on display at the Castle Combe circuit when spectators were treated to plenty of action on and off the track.

The Classic and Retro Action Day combined with the National Kit and Performance Car Show to offer a day out with drifting demos, a lunchtime cruise, free vintage bus rides around the circuit and a hot air balloons display.

Keepin races ahead in championship after Castle Combe success TWO Bristol drivers notched up successes when racing returned to Castle Combe for the Whitsun Race Day. James Keepin claimed first place in class C in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship, while Paul Arber won class B in the Castle Combe Sports & GT Championship.

The 1.85 mile circuit hosted racing from the three home championships, as well as action from the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championships and the 45-minute Dave Allan Trophy endurance race held in memory of the late Swindon based Honda test driver.

Keepin now lies fourth in the championship overall and has a 13-point lead in class C after three rounds.

NatWest T20 heads to Chipping Sodbury THE new NatWest U19 Club T20 will be coming to Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club this month.

The Ridings-based club is one of 20 teams across Gloucestershire to sign up to the event, run in association with Plumbase.

It features coloured clothing and the use of pink balls in Aussie-style Big Bash matches, with the focus on keeping teenagers involved with the sport.

As well as trying to win matches, clubs are also competing for so-called Blast Points, awarded by the away side for the best match-day experience.

The points are scored on a scale of zero to five, with the highest representing a true T20 Blast atmosphere judged to be fantastic and the lowest for a game deemed to be the same as a normal cricket match.

The Chipping Sodbury Slayers have been drawn in the South B group, with their first game away to the Bristol Buccaneers on July 16. They then meet the BWIP Warriors at the Ridings on Friday, July 31, with a 6.15pm start.

Trio of judo medals for Chipping Sodbury students CHIPPING Sodbury School students struck gold and silver at a judo competition in Devon.

They came away with two gold medals and a silver award won in the under-16 category of the western area closed championships held in Kingsbridge.

Brown belt and England cadet Chloe Gowen, a year 10 pupil, achieved gold for the fifth successive year.

Year eight student Beatrix Moggeridge stepped up a weight category on her way to a silver medal, which involved a bout against team-mate Chloe.

Meanwhile, year eight green belt Ozzy Gowen beat five other players, all England pre-cadets or cadets, on her way to a gold medal.

Beatrix’s sister Amy, from year 13, also acted as a referee throughout the day.

Motocross success for Yate’s Taylor at three-day fixture

YATE rider Chris Taylor finished a respectable second overall in the under-45s Twin Shock race held over three days at the MX Vintage Bonanza 2015 series event at Marshfield Motocross track.

Spectators enjoyed watching challenging racing in the sunshine at a track that provides plenty of entertainment with it’s numerous jumps.

Round four of the series takes place at the Ford Moto Park track on Sunday, July 19.
